The line "You sift through the detritus..." was removed, and the funnier line "Ferocious, aren't I?"

Neither lines are on the remaster. Nor the Japanese bluray transfer.

I think they just used the same master for the DTS-HD MA as they did previously for the TrueHD.
Why they make a fuss over advertising "DTS-HD Master Audio"? Who knows. Maybe they're just catering to the people who want to see the "DTS" logo on their receivers.

Audio sounds the same, overall.
Quiet dialogue, loud sfx.

Although, that McCauley/Nate scene didn't sound so quiet to us.
The "just gotta know how to grab it" scene right?

Usually with remasters, they only do the video.
If they're going to do audio, they usually provide a separate mix.
But mostly with older movies that were available only in stereo or mono.
Reviews where audio is provided in original stereo or mono over surround sound, the original (lesser channels) gets all the praise.

Another thing about the remaster is that it's partially zoomed in for a lot of scenes.
And for dark screens, there's banding on flat surfaces like walls.
The Japanese transfer has better grain retention and doesn't show banding on the walls for dark screens.

Just finished Arrival.

Not everyone's cup of tea.
The pace is excrutiating slow.
The details that matter most are easily gone in a second and you lost context of the rest of the film.

If you pay attention to the film, the last half becomes predictable.
The movie presented in a non-linear fashion.
There you go. Repetitive theme all around.
No major plot twist. Just the witnessing of the unravelling of events since you know the start and end.

Although, to their writing, the audience isn't meant to know exactly that the start is the end. Or later events.
They do well to mask all events and make you think something's of the past when it's actually the future.
But, by the time you do, all is said and done so just sit back and watch the rest of the movie.

Excellent sound design. The animal cliks of the aliens is great on the surround sound system.
The music has some excellent moments in the first few minutes of the introduction to the ships.

The rest just plays out to give focus to the story.

Overuse of that one song from Shutter Island. "This wicked life" but instrumental.
The OST to Shutter Island contained both versions.
Arrival used the instrumental version.

The exposition seqeuences about their process is fun.

But I understand how many feel it's boring.
It takes too long to get those parts that mean something.

And the total ending:

It's nothing spectacular that most general audiences would care about.

The concept of seeing the future and watching your own offspring die and choosing not to change that is not a common Western theme.
It's dark with no happy ending.

No one cares about the concept of fate.

You can see the future? Then play the lottery.
Standard Western response.

I don't know anyone in person that would enjoy the movie as much as I did.

The score goes well with the film, but largley underplayed. 1/4 utilized.
The rest of the audio goes to the sound design and the Shutter Island soundtrack.

It's not a movie worth checking out in 3D if you have a software player or TV that converts to 3D.
(or Pulfrich/Chromadepth glasses like me)
Only a few scense worth checking out in pseudo 3D.
Maybe even the trailer will do best.

Surround sound? Definitely try to watch it in surround sound.
Stereo? Only a few scenes are best in surround sound, so it defnitely won't make a difference if you watch in stereo with desktop speakers or a TV.

Atmos/DTS:X? A total waste.

I'd give the movie a solid 6/10.

If I'm going to watch it again, I'm going to use SVP to interpolate to 59.94fps, since there are quite a few scenes that are smoothly shot.

If you pay attention to the film, the last half becomes predictable.

I half-figured it out when Amy Adams told her daughter that her father was "the scientist of the family". For a film with so few defined characters, it seemed too coincidental that the father be a scientist... and that the only (white) male in the movie also be a scientist.

The score is abominable. Another sound designer whose skill is grossly exaggerated, based off of listening to this and Sicario. Maybe his The Theory of Everything is worth a try though. In any case I doubt he has much business writing "music". I will say, though, nice pizzicatos for when the team first enters the probe.

I personally don't think it's as deep as people like to say it is. Just because the concept of the film throws you for a loop doesn't mean it's 'deeeeep'. That novelty wears off on the second viewing. If you feel obligated to instruct the audience what to look for so blatantly... that's not clever filmmaking.

Ya, Arrival is way overrated.

I'm bored to tears with movies like these which present extraterrestrials as either being problematic children or idiot savants. A civilization as technically advanced as the one presented in Arrival would not have been stumped by us monkeys for a minute. They would have at least done their homework first.

It was odd that they can separate the environments to maintain dual atmospheres but then that's it.

'Classical and film.'

When I say 'Classical' I get a: "But why!?"

When I say 'Film' people assume I'm talking about licensed music. Then I have to give a lecture on original scoring. The people you know must be a lot more enlightened, I guess.

Tubular Bells [QUAD mix] - Mike Oldfield

I'm amazed I can even play multi-channel mixes on my FiiO X1 in the first place, especially when it isn't an advertised detail or a thing that has been mentioned anywhere by users of the device. However, I had to do quite a bit, since it was pretty picky. First, it only really works with WAV files, as using FLAC or a lossy format will either only play 2 channels or not at all. Second, it'll only work properly if the file has 6 channels period, meaning I had to insert an extra empty one in the mix I'm currently hearing. Lastly, because of it only accepting .wav files, they're guarunteed to be erased after a while, which is frustrating.

Still, it's a pretty neat thing to do, and the simulated effect is pretty good (though obviously not perfect). I'd be keen to play Kraftwerk's Autobahn next, but the DTS CD copy that made the discovery doesn't sound too great. Still, since it sounds fine on PC, I wonder if it's just the copy placed on here.

Saturday Matinee: Dracula '79 (last viewed? maybe 15 years ago)

A handsome gothic production (ahhh, the days of Albert Whitlock matte paintings) with a top notch cast which, sadly, eschews the visceral charms of all those Hammer productions of yore in favour of a chaste, laser light show for Barbara Cartland readers. It's weakest element would probably be the listless editing job.

Ultimately: yawn.

Williams score makes for a rewarding stand-alone listen, but in-film it doesn't come close to landing the sort of punches/stakes James Bernard used to throw.

GitS? Eh, it's boring.

Pretty much that.
It's okay for slow days.

but it's not something i'd jump on right away if I want to venture back to anime/machines.

Appleseed is nice. Breathtaking graphics over GitS. They mixed CG with hand drawn I think? Or it's all very good CG for its time.

Go full machine and get into Patlabor or any of the Robotech/Gundam or even the eversopopular Evengelion.

Or if you want something longer with mahcine/human, get into Full Metal Alchemist. That one's popular.

I didn't get beyond the first movie for GitS.
The story wasn't all that compelling and some elements seemed forced to drive a story forward.
Some of the robot bits were nice, but not enough.

The most compelling thing about the American movie is the updated graphics.
It'll be visually stunning.

And I don't even care that they bastardized the lead role to be white.
There's no convincing Japanese actress that can lead this movie.
If there were, they'd have to cut her lines down significantly due to language barrier.
Most Japanese actresses over here working for North American productions that get casted for roles, have to struggle a lot with their English lines.
Devon Aoki is old and living the married life now with children. That's why she wasn't back to do the Sin City sequel.
And that pretty much leaves the rest of the Japanese actresses to very, VERY minor roles with the least dialogue and the most time spent with speech coaches.
There simply isn't enough time or any actresses dedicated enough to live in both places.

UNLESS, they decided to cast a Chinese actress.
If Lucy Liu was younger (and taller), they could cast her.
Like they did for Kill Bill. But for Kill Bill, they got away with by saying she was Chinese/Japanese/American born so that's okay.

Point being, Chinese actresses tend to be more successful at being bi-lingual (American English / native Chinese (be it Cantonese/Mandarin/etc)).
Which is probably why a lot of American movies cast Chinese actresses to portray different Asian cultures.
And then those actresses get banned from so many of the Asian countries for playing those roles.

Besides, Japan has had years to ruin their own franchise.

Japan is no better than USA for wrecking franchises.
Their live action GANTZ and ATTACK ON TITAN were all poorly received. They still have their dedicated fans.

I think the only real validation for Gantz was that the story actually cleared up some of the anime series and one of the main actresses is like this huge porn actress over there (or something; BIG tits).

For ATOT, the only redeeming qualities I've heard comes from the youtube series that follows the live action movies.
It focuses on just the human characters, so they save their budget by not including the giants or anything.

Other live action adaptations were just mediocre and only loved my cult followings.

I haven't even begun to watch the live action adaptation of PARASITE EVE.
The movie is based on the novel I hear, more than the video game.
So it has that.

Japanese live-action movies based on anime/manga/games are about as thrilling as American reboots/remakes.

My current stance on the MCU: Had I gone to see Iron Man instead of Speed Racer that fateful summer of 2008, then I would've been far more inclined to give a shit now. Instead, they're just throwaway movies that I go to see in a theater to then forget about them.

Also, because things tend to get hectic when regarding strong opinions on popular topics here, I just merely resort to talking about things that pretty much never get brought up that I care more for. Thus, you'll see me talk more about Mike Oldfield or Jean-Michel Jarre than reason #250 on why Skelly thinks that Spider-Man Homecoming won't be THE perfect adaptation and probably will suck.

Lol, IM3 was so bad that they made a DVD short just to retcon all the crap away. Very poor treatment of both the Mandarin's and Tony's characters in that film.

As for AoU, Ultron was a lot cooler in the trailers than in the final film. I get what they were going for in the film with him, I really do, but Whedon only rarely was able to convince me that Ultron was little more than comic relief, or destruction fodder. Also, wtf, Quicksilver killed by a bullet? C'mon, there had to have been a smarter way to off him.

I'll never be able to forgive Shane Black for IM3.

Man still has quite the resume though (despite obvious duds). I'm still keen to watch Lethal Weapon (despite Spark caring more for the sequels) and The Nice Guys.
It'll be more interesting that is.

(That, and I'm kinder to IM3 than many).

I was talking about SS. But I'll avert my eyes. Thanks for the warning!

Somehow the film made bank at the box office, probably because the movie looked like it starred Margot Robbie's ass.
Harley Quinn's character has degenerated so much since her B:TAS days. :-\

"Character has degenerated" implies she still has a character. She doesn't. Margot Robbie is a decent actress but she brought nothing to the character other than her chest and her ass. Not that she was written to go beyond that. I yearn for the days when Harley Quinn was a cautionary tale regarding abusive relationships.

Honestly the fans of this film have no critical thinking skills, far as I've observed. It's mindless trash. And I LOVE DC comics.

Mindless trash can be fun as long as it doesn't take itself too seriously. Like Jurassic World. Silly, dumb popcorn movie, but I really enjoy it. But I guess SS didn't have that sort of self-awareness?

I'm more on the positive side of Jurassic World, but yeah you're on the right track. JW knew that even JP was silly and had a decent level of cheese that our kid minds were so easy to accept in the '90s. SS doesn't have any identity whatsoever. I don't even know what they were going for, and I'm guessing that's because David Ayer had 6 weeks to write the script and had to change it multiple times whenever it tickled Warner Bros' fancy, and had to keep filming all the while.

Yeah, I remember now.
I only glanced at the screen to see GW.
At this point, I always forget about Rupert.

The Nice Guys was funny. I had a good laugh. It's pretty standard, however.
Nothing outstanding and the shenanigans weren't all shenani.
The real positives I had for the movie was the comedy and chemistry between Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling.

At the time, Lethal Weapon was great when it came out. Top of the line buddy cop.
It's good to get into the franchise.

But compared to other franchises, nothing beats the first Die Hard movie for the Christmas holidays.
I mean, he's got a machine gun for christ's sake!

50% of the movie could be how badly they constrict the 'talent' (directors, etc.)
The other 50% could pull back the curtain on all the creepy pedo shit that probably goes on.

I'm very on and off regarding how to treat other's opinions. There will be times when I'll be a bit aggressive in the way I wouldn't accept any other view point. Other times I'll just give them the thumbs up and move on. Like, I very much accepted that Steven Universe has been considered by some having deteriorated heavily over the years, despite enjoying it still. Yet, I still get overly passionate about Spider-Man. It's just odd.

Most likely because the film's script literally changed depending on how well the latest trailer did. They wanted a DC version of Guardians of the Galaxy because it was popular. Not because, you know, they had actually made a good film.

Ooh! That was certainly lovely. It contains what I most tend to appreciate with what I generally listen to (which of course includes JMJ), as it contains a great blend of melody, atmosphere, and mood. Certainly will give it another listen soon.

I genuinely do wonder if Jean-Michel did influence him to have taken this route. Though considering what I've read of their relationship, that chance is pretty low. Still, it makes you wonder.

David is all kinds of awesome. (The fight between him and Piper in They Live is a classic.) Rumor has it Carpenter had a sequel in mind for The Thing and it would have picked up from the end of the first movie revealing Childs (David) was an imitation.

But Carpenter's vision of first contact was not appreciated. People wanted E.T. not The Thing and the film died at the box office.

For my own amusement I scribbled down a rough outline of a sequel. I never cracked the third act, though. Played too much like the conclusion to the first film.

There's this great cinema in Barcelona, called "the Phenomena Experience" it's a hefty, cozy beautiful cinema, designed to look like the old cinemas, and it's obviously a place for all cinema lovers. It's great.. I had a great experience there, finally when I got to be there, last summer. There, they screen all kinds of movies. Some premieres, but also old movies, like Casablanca, Alien, Superman, all kinds of movies we love. Hell, even the weirdest movies, too! Some old zombie, or gore, etc. It's really fantastic. I definitely would love to go there almost everyday. You can check it out here (https://www.google.es/search?q=phenomena+experience&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjx7JDK0JLSAhVD5xoKHT8LD9UQ_AUICSgC&biw=1366&bih=589) and here's the programation of this month, check it out! It's wonderful, there's such a extreme flexibility of all kind of genres. I got to see Lady and the Tramp in 35mm, too, which was one of my life wishes! And Lawrence of Arabia was the movie me and my bro picked as the second visit, because we knew it was going to be an awesome, one-in a lifetime experience, and it was! I really wanna go back. I've been so hurt ever since, that I haven't bothered to check what they screen ever since, because I'll be jealous to see what they got that I can't watch

The HD-DVD for "The Thing" was previously the best transfer with less DNR and better colors.

But now the 4K remaster is currently the best.
It's not artificially sharpened, and details are restored in so many scenes.
You can actually see the finite grains of snow forming lines and paths, scuffs and scrapes.

Really one of the best 4K remasters I've ever seen. The all to end all.

I think he's easily the most well-known name in Looney Tunes musical canon.
Then again he wrote a new score for each episode (I think) so what you're thinking of could easily be some sort of library music.
