Not everyone has the same ear and not everyone has the same equipments or space to waste on oversized music which barely has a difference.

I downloaded a bit of the first track, 96 kHz. Not enough to listen. The frequency content extends up pretty close to 48 kHz. I'm guessing that file is an orchestral recording, so it does actually contain the specks of dust up there. Good for them. However, there is a prominent line pattern a few kHz lower than the max. Noisy equipment, probably.

Track five appears to have nothing up there. Probably electronically generated (from instrument samples) music. Or simply downsampled at some point and then upsampled before release. In either case, fake.

So what would you guys recommend for making scans of your own, coming from someone who never has used a scanner before? I want to edit my Momodora upload one day so I can include scans of the CD contents, as well as the game manual that came with the physical print of the game.

My 5 tips for the lazy scanner who still wants to be helpful:
1. Always save in .png. Please, please do not save in .jpg. Even if file size is a concern, a mildly lower resolution true .png is worth more than a mildly higher resolution .jpg in the vast majority of cases (especially because it seems like people always save .jpgs in awful quality).
2. It's better to overcrop than undercrop (i.e. leave white space if you have to to get the full image because of poor rotation or warping). Way too many scanners will just chop the edges of a scan off in order to kill all white space - if you don't want to take the time to correct it properly, just leave it there so that somebody else has the ability to fix it.
3. Initially scan the front cover in as high of a DPI as possible - but you don't need to bother doing that for other surfaces. That should ideally be at least 300 DPI for the front cover, while you needn't really bother to go higher for anything else.
4. Don't do much editing on the front cover unless you know what you're doing and prepared to put the time in to do it right. Some images come out almost perfectly via a scanner and only need a small brightness and/or contrast correction, while some will always be a complete and utter disaster. If you're not capable or don't have the time, just don't edit it beyond a simple (over)crop - providing what's essentially the raw image allows other people to properly fix it much more cleanly than trying to deal with sloppy seconds.
5. Resample (i.e. change the resolution, whether up or down, or rotate in non-90 degree angles) the image as few times as possible.

Personally, assuming that decent scans aren't already available: I scan the front cover at the highest DPI possible (1200 in my case), the others at "standard" (300 - if you can't do at least a 300 DPI scan, your scans probably aren't going to be very good, but of course, anything is better than nothing - even 150 DPI will be around 700x700 once cropped for square scans, which is at least passable for non-front covers). I use Photoshop to rotate (its standard 90-degree rotating options + its ruler straightening tool to get as much of the image for a crop as possible), crop (using a square ratio for perfect square resolutions as appropriate, no ratio if it's not a square scan), and resize as necessary (bicubic sharper most of the time, bicubic standard if for some reason bicubic sharper is not appropriate...nearest neighbor in very rare and special cases). If there's not already a high quality front cover scan available, I often do additional editing on it (brightness, contrast, true blacks and whites leveling + the corrections/reversions necessary to prevent corruption of the other colors, various artifacts corrections, slight saturation correction, etc.), but pretty much never do it for anything else. How perfect you want things really depends on how much work you want to put in - some front covers take only a few minutes of editing to have a great result, some take literal bloody hours - I speak from experience.

(e): Oh...and a lot of scanners will chop off the edge of a scan if you place it directly on the edge of the flatbed. You should probably see if this happens to you - for regular white paper, obviously, this doesn't really matter, but for album art, it kind of does. If it does happen to you, unfortunately, it means you cannot use the edge of your scanner's flatbed as a straightedge if you want to get the full image, which painfully means rotation correction.

But you can always recheck FLAC files with cuetools (http://cue.tools/wiki/CUETools_Download) to recreate .accurip logs (and even .cue and .log for an album found in CTDB maybe, but i'm not sure).

Yeah, using cuetools to check against the checksums (which only requires the FLACs themselves) can be about as functionally good as a perfect log, assuming enough users have ripped it and it checks out. Lineage is nice, too, but if cuetools confirms that it's a consensus perfect rip, that's that AFAIK. Obviously, this can't always be done for very rare items, though.

(Although, I don't THINK cuetools can re-create correct .cues or .logs even when it can confirm the rip is right, but I might be wrong.)

Kinda late but I just see Type A version and Disc 6 most of them seem to be upscale same as Type B so i dont think we losing much with Digital + Download Type B Dsic 6. Check with Lossless Checker

Kinda late but I just see Type A version and Disc 6 most of them seem to be upscale same as Type B so i dont think we losing much with Digital + Download Type B Dsic 6. Check with Lossless Checker




I tried "Lossless Audio Checker" but many times fails, and I know how it works. It simply check if a track hit the 21-22khz frequency, if not it will say it is upsampled but this is not true. Many music that are quiet or only use low frequency instruments without cymbals for example will not hit that 21-22 frequency.

I tried with my own music I made that I know for sure are lossless, and the program target some of my music as upsampled.

So I think is better to check with "Spectro" and you analyze by yourself

This is more of a request if anyone is interested in Dark Souls, with the recent release of Dark Souls Remastered for PS4, Xbox One and PC, there was also a trilogy box released for PS4 only in Japan with 6 soundtrack discs, 2 for each game. It caught my curiosity because Dark Souls 1 never had a 2 disc OST release afaik, so I thought maybe this time they plan to include all tracks fully with proper endings for each track. I'd be very grateful if someone managed to get it uploaded.

PLEASE, If you happen to have the Japanese Trilogy Box or know someone who does, sharing the files would be really helpful.

Of course it's about courtesy. It's all about courtesy when it comes to everything about sharing stuff you buy, spend your time searching for a rip that someone requested, anything everyone does around here. Huge private forums are based on this value and even buy stuff just for the sake of sharing. Like bonesatyr says, with this kind of attitude, he could simply be desmotivated to share his stuff and stop, and I personally would not like that. He has his reasons about not liking something he ripped being shared here, and I'm in no position to judge. The point is, he shares A LOT of rare stuff bought with his own money and he spends DAYS providing VGMdb the absolute best scans you can find on the internet, which is very valuable for me, personally.

Of course someone will do it again, I'm not acting like I could control it, neither does he, that's not my point. I'm just trying to keep him doing what he does, because I like (and need) that. Since I know he looks this thread often, I knew it would affect him anyway, so I just spoke my mind. Along the SNES game soundtrack and some arranged pieces, it got extracts from various other Contra games, including the mighty GB ending track!

@SonicRings4 I've never seen those albums shared anywhere before, but the first two may be on somewhere like astost where I do not have access. The Steam soundtrack I believe is only digital, though.

On that note, I'll buy the Galaga Legions albums from itunes soon, as well as the Infinity Gene album. I don't know about Groove Coaster, but it may get a Steam album as well when it launches.
