The Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age Blu-ray is CD-quality up-sampled to 96 kHz. What a waste of space.

The sound quality is pretty bad, too. Track 18 "Parting Ways" is a nice piano melody ruined by pops and clipping in whatever piano instrument samples they used. Also, while Hitoshi Sakimoto might be a good composer, he has a terrible taste for mixing and arranging. Keep him away from that console. Both the original PS2 CD soundtrack and the PS4 soundtrack have different flavors of bad mixes. Sakimoto also likes to smear the music to hell with echo-y reverb, although the PS4 soundtrack is less extreme.

The PS2 sequenced tracks are the best version of Final Fanatasy XII. Does anyone have a PS2 digital gamerip (optical output)?

Well it's a little above CD quality, it's 48 kHz if you look at the spectrals.

No, half of the sample rate (48 kHz) is just the Nyquist frequency: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyquist_frequency

There's no frequency content above 22.05 kHz, which is CD-quality maximum frequency.

Well that's if you're only looking at one audio channel, I was just making this easier by adding both audio channels to give you the total sampling frequency. If you want to look at this from the perspective of one audio channel in a stereo audio file, then you'd be right saying that the standard CD quality is 22.05 kHz. However, take a look at the spectrals of the files of Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age blu ray soundtrack and you'll see that the cutoff is at 24 kHz for each channel. Meaning that the total sampling rate is 48 kHz, which when considering that the linear bit depth is 24-bit audio, is considered "HD audio" and of higher quality than 16-bit 44.1 kHz audio. But you're right in saying that it's upsampled (mainly because the HFPA standard used in blu ray audio discs is standardized to be 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz, similar to how CD audio standard is 16-bit/44.1 kHz). That's why I ended up just resampling the blu-ray rip of the soundtrack to 24-bit/48 kHz to save space.

TLDR: It is upsampled to 96 kHz but you can resample it down to 24-bit/48 kHz with negligible to no audio-quality loss since there's a cutoff at 24 kHz for each channel. As for what you believe in terms of "sound quality" and mixing/arrangement, I guess that's just a matter of opinion but I really happen to like this soundtrack's sounds :D

Channel count has nothing to do with frequency, so this is a false premise for the following:

Meaning that the total sampling rate is 48 kHz, which when considering that the linear bit depth is 24-bit audio, is considered "HD audio" and of higher quality than 16-bit 44.1 kHz audio.
But you are correct that there appears to be up to 24 kHz of actual frequency content, not just 22.05 kHz. I made a mistake as I squinted at the Spek output. Not that 22.05 - 24 kHz makes any audible difference (actually, the extra frequency might degrade the audio produced from a system, depending on the [non-]linearity of your reproduction system).

But you're right in saying that it's upsampled (mainly because the HFPA standard used in blu ray audio discs is standardized to be 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz...
High Fidelity Pure Audio is a marketing term that's slapped onto 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz discs: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Fidelity_Pure_Audio There's no reason that they couldn't have released Final Fantasy XII on a 48 kHz Blu-ray, except that they would lose their precious marketing label. The problem is they've lied. The content isn't natively 96 kHz. It has been resampled, and resampling is a lossy (there's no objectively perfect way to do it) conversion, by the way.

You can find a gamerip here: https://www.zophar.net/music/playstation2-psf2/final-fantasy-xii
But you will need a PSF2 player, foobar2k has a plugin for it and you can convert them to flac as well
No PSF2 player exists which emulates the PS2 reverb correctly, which is why we need a gamerip from the actual console running a hack that plays the music. From the optical output for the best quality, please.

Channel count has nothing to do with frequency, so this is a false premise for the following:

Well the two distinct parts that a stereo track is split into, where each frequency is cutoff at half the file's sampling rate/frequency (ex. stereo 16bit/44.1kHz has two 20.5kHz parts and stereo 24bit/48 kHz has two 24 kHz parts), is identified by all the audio software I use as a "channel". Atleast, that's what Adobe Audition calls them. Look at the spectrals here for a song from the soundtrack using Adobe Audition:

http://imgur.com/a/ftM0Z

Using one of the songs in the album as an example, the cutoff for this channel is at 24 kHz. There are 2 of them. Hence, the total sampling rate, or frequency, is 48 kHz. If I'm wrong in my understanding here, please feel free to correct me on what to refer to this as, if it's not "channel", especially since that's what Adobe Audition and all other software I use like Audacity seems to call it.

There's no reason that they couldn't have released Final Fantasy XII on a 48 kHz Blu-ray, except that they would lose their precious marketing label. The problem is they've lied. The content isn't natively 96 kHz. It has been resampled, and resampling is a lossy (there's no objectively perfect way to do it) conversion, by the way.

I wouldn't necessarily say Square Enix ever lied with this release. Look at the blu ray link: https://store.na.square-enix.com/product/442973/final-fantasy-xii-the-zodiac-age-original-soundtrack-limited-edition-blu-ray-music-disc . They never said the source audio was 96 kHz or tried to market it as "HD audio". They simply just said that this was a release in the blu ray audio format.

But you’re right, Square Enix could have easily used another standard other than 96kHz to encode in. One guess is that whatever process their publishing wing has standardized for mass producing blu-ray audio discs had 96kHz encoding as the default. Whatever small team was in charge of starting the manufacturing process probably didn’t bother to see that the master files they were given were in 48kHz. Either that, or their automated encoding process mandated the encoding to adhere to the HFPA standard. I’d assume the latter, given that all their blu-ray releases tend to be 96kHz regardless of what the source files encoded in the blu ray actually are (this definitely isn’t the first time Square Enix has pulled this resampling lossy master shit). This reason would also make sense too, as it would make the blu-ray publishing process as easy as a click of a button and would require no thinking. Whatever the case, it was lazy on Square Enix’s part.

Also, you're right that resampling is lossy, but for situations like this (going from 24/96khz encoding, where the spectrals show a cutoff at 24khz, to 24/48khz encoding), the audio quality loss is negligible. Even the resampling up (from 24/48kHz ->24/96kHz) that Square Enix is doing for the release on their end, while dumb and a waste of space, is negligible in terms of audio loss. This loss should be negligible for these situations regardless of whatever resampling algorithm you choose to use (SSRC / SoX being the most common ones). But yeah, a loss is a loss (which goes against the whole idea of "lossless") so it's unfortunate that Square Enix never even bothered releasing the 48 kHz master files they used in their blu-ray / mora.jp 96khz upsampled releases. So for picky people like us, I guess we have all the reason to be a little irritated with lazy upsamples like this.

Regardless of all this though, I always have to give props to Square Enix. They (and to some degree, Capcom via Suleputer too I guess, minus a few major games) seem to be the only major AAA Japanese video game publisher that actively releases all their OST’s in the highest possible quality they can and in a very organized and dedicated manner, unlike some companies that never usually release their soundtracks. And even when they do, it's not even close to the complete thing and they force me to resort to rips (I’m looking at you Nintendo….lol)

Spectral analysis is just a fancy way of saying "view a graph of the frequency" of the audio file. It's easy to do if you just pop the audio file in Audacity or Adobe Audition. Viewing this frequency graph is the easiest way of objectively determining audio quality since you can see where the frequency cuts off at.

Using one of the songs in the album as an example, the cutoff for this channel is at 24 kHz. There are 2 of them. Hence, the total sampling rate, or frequency, is 48 kHz.
That's incorrect. Sample rate (96 kHz) applies to each channel separately.

Correction to my previous post, I mixed up sampling rate and Nyquist frequency; Nyquist frequency: is sample rate / 2:

Half of the sample rate (48 kHz in this case) is just the Nyquist frequency: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyquist_frequency
The Nyquist frequency is the maximum frequency that can be represented without aliasing using the theoretical perfect filter (requires infinite time). Practically we can think of it as the maximum content able to be present.

I wouldn't necessarily say Square Enix ever lied with this release.
Taking absolute truth (the digital master) and transforming it for no valid reason (Blu-ray supports 48 kHz) is a misrepresentation of the truth. Can I have his job?

One guess is that whatever process their publishing wing has... it was lazy on Square Enix’s part.
Please. They sold a product that contains an obvious (to a person who is presumably paid to produce audio) mistake. No speculative defense necessary. I'll speculate, though: It was probably driven by the human obsession with bigger numbers converting into bigger sales. (Of past, present, and future releases.)

...highest possible quality...
Maybe someday. I'm an optimist.

This is Audacity's spectrogram view of the whole entire album joined together. It looks like the peaks are just a little over the 26.0k line when I zoom in. Interpretation? :)

Update: I was trying to learn a little more from the Audacity manual and forums. Apparently Audacity just won't graph out higher frequencies as colors without gain, because higher frequencies tend to have low amplitude. To make the spectrogram show higher frequencies you have to adjust frequency gain:

"Frequency Gain (dB/dec): A positive value here gives some extra gain to higher frequencies (above 1000 Hz), as they tend to be smaller and so cannot be seen as well. You get less gain at lower frequencies as well. The default is 0 dB."

So is there a way to resample it down to 48kHz losslessy?
It cannot be a lossless operation because downsampling basically means discarding forever information which frequency is "above" (target sample rate / 2).
Today software and tools do a very good job at resampling, so you should hardly be able to discern a 92KHz file against a 48Khz "end user" downsampled one (or even 92KHz->44KHz) in ABX tests. Or tell the downsampled file from the 92KHz source, for that matter.

If I limit the view to only 24k-48k it looks like this, so I guess it does go all the way up to 48k?:

The reason your second graph looks the way it does is because, like you stated, you adjusted the Frequency Gain (dB/dec). Increasing that option just artificially increases frequencies on the graph to make it easier to view, as the quote you provided suggests. You can try it yourself, convert a 16-bit/44.1kHz file to like a sampling rate of 96kHz. Then crank up that option again from 0 to 33, or whatever value you seemed to have used. You'll get similar results.

Also you're right about it not graphing out low amplitudes, but that's not a bad thing. The lower the amplitude, the silenter it is. Amplitude is just another way of measuring "intensity" or loudness (btw that's what the colors on the graph are showing you). If the default spectrogram shows you nothing at higher frequencies, that's because there really is nothing there. So your first screenshot with the default settings was accurate.

On a more positive note. Anyone see the recent Contra vinyl announcement? SERIOUSLY tempted on that. One of my favorite NES games/soundtracks. I know I'll probably never play it but man do I love that game, and the vinyl looks incredible.

You would prolly love if companies released it in 120khz even if you wouldn't hear the difference..

Thanks for the explanation. I think I get it now. I tried what you suggested with a simple tone generated by Audacity, and it did exactly what you said when boosting the gain.

Then (for science!) I did a spectrogram for the official MP3 version exactly the same way I did the FLAC one, and it looked a lot different. The maximum frequency is 22050 for the 44100Hz files, and the spectrogram actually goes right up to the top. So does that mean the MP3 copy is using the full 44100Hz available to it, but the Blu-ray version is only using (whatever frequency it peaks at) times 2?

The Blu-ray spectro looked like it peaked out around 26.5 or 27 without any gain adjustment. Does that mean the Blu-ray could have been mastered at ~54000Hz instead of 96000 to save space?

I’m definitely not complaining, I’m more than happy with this blu ray release :D

I haven't looked at the MP3 that’s linked here's spectrograph, but I wouldn't think that it would be using the full 44100Hz the same way similarly encoded 16bit/44.1kHz FLAC file would be. This is especially true if you're looking at the MP3 320 CBR version or the MP3 V0 version because LAME (most popular mp3 encoder) tends to encode both with a lowpass filter by default, which does a good job of effectively cutting off anything above 20kHz (or whatever the setting is put to).
But I guess disabling the lowpass or using another MP3 encoder that doesn’t enforce it would give you a spectrograph that looks very similar to the 16bit/44.1kHz or higher FLAC file it was effectively “carved from”, but the MP3 encoder would have definitely eliminated enough from it that it would be distinct from its “lossless” counterpart.
Also, I lost you at what you meant at the end of your sentence there about the Blu-ray version.

The Blu-ray spectro looked like it peaked out around 26.5 or 27 without any gain adjustment. Does that mean the Blu-ray could have been mastered at ~54000Hz instead of 96000 to save space?

Zoom in more, it cuts off at 24kHz. Technically you'll see it like 0.1 above that mark every now and then, but the reason it goes a little above every now and then is because the resampling algorithm that was used to encode it in 96kHz sorta stretches the frequency a little bit like that when it upsampled it. But it's effectively cut off at 24. As for saving space, I'm not sure I follow because Square Enix went ahead and upsampled it to 96kHz anyway for the blu ray (which btw I think has ~50gb to use so no way that would be filled with one soundtrack's album).

Yeah don't worry, I'm not exactly a stickler when it comes to this stuff either. I'll take good music in the best form I can get it in, whether it's considered a flawed form or not. I'm just spitting my very limited audio engineering info whenever I can to educate whatever little I can.

I just don't understand, sure, it's a waste for the disc to be formatted to 96khz when it's 48hz, but it's still HD music. Complaining for it not being 1290hz is dumb. You still get literal physical lossless music.

I didn't buy this so I have no horse in this race, but it is, at best, extremely misleading to advertise a release as 24/96 if it's really just upsampled from a lower sampling rate, especially if there was a financial motive in doing so. Just say what it really is, nobody who is legitimately interested in that release is going to turn it down because it's "only" available in 24/48 and not 24/96 or something. But be truthful about it.

Reminds me of the few occasions I've purchased "lossless" music from reputable providers like Qobuz, 7digital, tidal, Pono, etc. and received blatant MP3 transcodes to FLAC

I was sitting here enjoying the music, when I read that this was upsampled. Then I was sitting here enjoying the music while analyzing the spectros. Now I'm done playing around with it, and I'm still sitting here enjoying the music! ;)

I'm simply interested in the engineering behind these releases, and wanted to discuss it with people who sound like they know a thing or two, like Shadow Paladin.

Sorry, maybe I misread that further upthread - I was under the impression that others were under the impression that it was at a higher sampling rate at the time of purchase.

It's a general gripe not just with this release, luckily upsampled hi-res doesn't happen too much anymore be it on physical releases or downloads. But there was a time when buying this stuff was a gamble and you had to really know how to look at what you were actually getting.

Here's a question for everyone - back in the old Night Trap kickstarter that did not get successfully funded, one of the rewards was a CD single of the theme song. Because funding was not reached I don't think anyone ever actually got these.

Recently Ship To Shore phono Co. released the song as a 45, with some of the game's incidental music on the b-side.

Does anyone know of any other releases of Night Trap music, either as a physical release or download? I couldn't find anything on VGMdb. I'd love to have a lossless version of the original theme song

Technically speaking, nope.

Yeah, definitely worth the saved space. I actually ended up doing something similar with the FFX HD Remaster Blu Ray soundtrack since it had the same issue.

I was going to request your thinner version of FFX and then I remembered that there were corrupted track in that release....

Also I heard that Heroes of might and magic IV only has lossy OST?

Still want one though, can anyone upload or point me to a download link?

Years ago, I believe someone said he was ripping MSR (racing game), but I didn't find any release in this post, is it canceled?

I Also have Castlevania 4 Vinyl, Contra 3 Vinyl, Death Stranding Vinyl, Shinobi 3 Vinyl, will try and rip them sometime this weekend.

Thanks for the shares.
My only feedback would be when you do vinyl rips to record at 24 bit 96khz. Otherwise 16 bit is just CD quality and what one can get from the CD versions anyway.

I agree, vinyl should be ripped at 24/96 to capture all the frequencies because it's analogical and has more details than a CD.

The aim is to have a perfect archive of the vinyl with all the material.

In the end the importance is how the mastering is done and that should be it.

The vinyl is a a really mediocre medium to store music, it has half the dynamic range than redbook, rolled frequencies, noise floor, it degrades over time and is a hassle (or a joy!) to handle. These physical limitations are also his strength because music engineers are forced to preserve sane Dynamic Ranges when mastering forv vinyl to be listenable.

So today you can find better sounding Vinyls than CDs but that's not a problem with the CD, the problem is with the industry and mastering choices because a well mastered CD should be technically a better choice than a vinyl.

24/96 tends to be a baseline to capture an analog source and to do mastering/mixing leaving the final result on sane bitrates, mind even 16/44 is overkill for us humans!

The points of vinyl in the end are:
Having the closest source to the master of an album as it was intended to be listened when it was recorded, that's true for basically all the post 90's stuff.
Having a better, most listenable version of an album due to poor mastering choices and avoid Loudness War.

And well to be honest they are cool to handle and love those gatefolds, i have like 500+ of vinyl myself and it sure has his charm but hey, let's have the feet on the earth.

A "Complete" edition of the Ys 8 soundtrack including all the PS4 exclusive songs AND some unused/new tracks that weren't in any of the previously released CDs. Bought myself off of ototoy.

Yes, yes, I know. Falcom's mastering is a mess. Cold Steel 1 had 4 different masters: PC, OST , Master and PS3

This is 24bit/96khz, so this is not a CD rip, but straight from the Ototoy online store. Came out today.

Best songs from Ys 8, one of the greatest Ys titles in history (some longtime Ys fan friends of mine are showering it with praise, and how it has a better story than both Cold Steels put together but also has tons of content, fun bosses and jumping/layered dungeon design is back) and that's even with the sub-30fps Vita version.

Playing it on PS4 is going to be badass at 60fps.

Sunshine Coastline
Deadly Temptation
Woods of Elevated Coral Reef
Lost in Green
Crimson Fighter
Overcome the Rocky Path
Gens D'Armes
Next Step Towards the Unknown
Iclucian Dance
All-Out Attack (PS4)

That wouldn't be too tough now would it ?? ( ⌐■ ロ ■ )

I'll be listening to it all, need some Ys summer listening musickes. (ง • ‿ •` )ง

I did some quick spectrum analysis and it looks legit I guess. Not entirely sure about my credentials though. Several of the tracks have superflat audio profiles though.

I mean...I did buy it myself off ototoy. I spek checked it, too.

Falcom has had a weird mastering system for a while now. CS1, CS2 and Ys 8 have all had random songs where there was a 22-28khz cutoff or some shit and then the rest of the songs were proper full 48khz.

I miss the days of Redbook audio that isn't super compressed and you could hear everything cleanly. but I guess lightning doesn't strike twice (3 times in the case of Ys IV Super Arrange Version).

Does anyone know how to split a .wav or .flac image through its .cue with EAC?

I believe you play the cue using EAC, use ctrl+a to highlight the tracks, right click on the tracks, go to convert in the menu, then click on the ... option under that.

Select what settings you want there, then click the convert button.

That's what I do anyway.

I honestly tried with two rips, one with a .flac rip and another .cue, and none of them worked.. maybe because they were japanese rips.

"Milo has chosen not to receive private messages or may not be allowed to receive private messages. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her."

So I can't pm Milo.. Can you recommend another way of contact?

You could try splitting it with CUETools instead. It's an unbeatable program!

So, for anyone wondering, here is the tracklist for the Sonic Mania Vinyl. Pretty good selection, however, I REALLY can't wait for a full soundtrack release.

01 Discovery (Title Screen Theme)
02 Lights, Camera, Action! (Studiopolis Act 1)
03 Wildstyle Pistolero (Mirage Saloon Act 1 K Mix)
04 Tabloid Jargon (Press Garden Act 1)
05 Danger on the Dance Floor (Mini Boss Theme)
06 Built to Rule (Titanic Monarch Act 1)
07 Dimension Heist (Special Stage)
08 Ruby Delusions (Eggman Boss Theme 1)
09 Comfort Zone (Main Menu)
10 Prime Time (Studiopolis Act 2)
11 Blossom Haze (Press Garden Act 2)
12 Rogues Gallery (Mirage Saloon Act 2)
13 Hi-Spec Robo Go! (Hard Boiled Heavies Theme)
14 Skyway Octane (Mirage Saloon Act 1 ST Mix)
15 Steel Cortex (Titanic Monarch Act 2)
16 Ruby Illusions (Final Boss Theme)

I'm a little disappointed about the official Metroid Samus Returns album.
I thought it was a nice selection (or full, what would be much better) with tracks just from this game but it isn't.
Well, again a game rip is the better option.

While I'm glad it's giving a chance for the new zones / themes a spotlight, not having any of the other zones in it make it seem.. I dunno, incomplete somehow? That's not to say none of the new zones music is terrible or anything. Press Garden is the standout for me.

Did someone bought the streaming for the "Kirby 25th Anniversary Orchestral Concert"? This (http://comicbook.com/gaming/2017/07/24/you-can-watch-the-amazing-kirby-25th-anniversary-orchestra-conce/) says it was only available for purchase until August 13th on NicoNico (http://live.nicovideo.jp/gate/lv297872783).

I've shared so many things in here, and I'd probably buy this one, but my credit card is gone, and I can't buy it right now. If someone could share, it would be really great.

Apparently getting the old music will be unlikely, due to licensing reasons.

Only because SEGA are lazy about licencing music. SEGA of America, in particular, apparently. We can only hope Wavemaster shows an interest in releasing it on CD, so they can cut a deal with Nakamura... but I doubt it. Because of the whole weird passive aggressive xenophobia thing that the arms of SEGA have going on. Ah well.

It is a genuine shame, as Mania is the best Sonic soundtrack since Generations. Which WAS released in full on CD. So, it is possible, no matter what Webber insinuates.

Can someone please post a FLAC version of the Destiny 2 OST. The one by Misspurple has it behind a pay wall website.

Looking for the OST of the Gunslinger Girls games on PS2. Looks like there's only one official CD released.

The link is down, can someone reupload it? With many thanks in advance if it does happen.

Also, would it be too much to ask for this? (http://vgmdb.net/album/4679)

I second this, those two are the hardest albums to find in FLAC, specially the Overture one

I "might" have the Sound Alive one in FLAC in some backup drive, but it surely is a really old rip and probably not the most accurate one...

(The quote doesn't show the quote the post contains, which is for the Guilty Gear XX Sound Alive album, the link is dead, the link is for Guilty Gear 2 Overture Vol.2 album)

Does the official digital version of D2's OST from Bungie come in FLAC? I don't see a physical release anywhere. If it doesn't come in FLAC, you might be out of luck.

Oh, it was updated just today. I only saw Sep 5th and thought it'd already been around longer.
