Between "BEYOND" and "MUSIC CHRONOLOGY" you have identical soundtracks with two different masterings.
And at the end of it, I'm forced to keep both just because I prefer the sound of some discs on the first and others on the latter XD !

Trypedite, I have preferences for FLAC and 100% log rips, but that doesn't mean I reject rips that are not perfect or a MP3 version if I really want an album. That's the differnece between this guy and I. I am thankful for the music I get, so long as the quality is good enough. Meaning 320, 192 is fine so long as I can't hear the audible difference.

The sound quality on the new set is actually worse than on the Sound Selection CD packed in with the Master Edition of the game. That one already had some mastering issues that you’d hope would be improved in a set obviously aimed at collectors and enthusiasts, but it seems they went in the opposite direction instead. Things are somewhat more compressed and clipped, when comparing what are otherwise identical tracks between the two. On the plus side there seems to be less dithering noise, but on the downside the new set doesn’t even make use of the full frequency response of 16/44.1 audio, indicating either heavy filtering or perhaps even lossy encoded source material? Which is much more audibly grating and intrusive on the experience. How do you manage to not have these problems on the free CD and then introduce them on the big deluxe set?



What I do like is that these discs are very full. The “hurr durr is there 1 piano note per disc botw had no music” crowd will note that there is barely a couple of minutes of free space on any of the 5 discs, assuming a maximum 80min runtime. I’m glad it’s availble in any form especiallly in this very complete set, but I have a serious personal issue with the quality of the presentation of the full soundtracks to what were two franchise redefining games. This one wasn’t nearly as gross as what they did to Odyssey, but there’s no reason that these audio issues should be the trend in producing these sets. This isn’t a house record, nobody is going to be bumping “Breath of The Wild Main Theme” in the club. Leave some dynamics in your discs and show some fucking respect for your own work, Nintendo.

You're probably right. But this is a consumer level product and not really aimed at audio enthusiasts. Maybe fitting the tracks on the discs given the source audio size was a challenge.

Pretty sure Nintendo uses proprietary audio types for their games and work hard to fit the massive game on the rather limited in size memory cards.

The result is the original 'recorded' audio from the producer and the 'source' audio in the game are not the same, and a consumer disc release is yet another version on top of that. I would guess that the true source audio from the original .wavs would be several GBs.

This isn't really stealth N-bashing post but hey, what can you do. Industry standard means little to them.

I have to offer an update to my intitial criticism of the BoTW set. In further comparison of tracks duplicated between the full OST set and the Sound Selection CD from last year, I noticed some that are actually improved to some extent, such as the field themes, perhaps also the Hinox battle theme (I do need to conduct further evaluation)


Still, I can’t stress enough how disappointing and frustrating it is as a fan to see Nintendo take an unpredictably inconsistent and often low quality approach to how their music is presented. If you think I’m ungrateful, you may want to guess again. I’m thrilled we get it at all (and again, many thanks to those who do invest their money and effort into producing perfect rips of the material and are willing to share) It seems we’ll never know just what we’re actually gonna get on these soundtrack releases until we listen.


I maintain that the clipping-induced distortion apparent on some tracks is absolutely inappropriate, and extremely grating on the ears. The Mario Odyssey set is nearly what I would consider unlistenable and is certainly the worst offender, but it’s plaguing a good part of this Zelda set too. The “Main Theme” is the first track, a key part of the entire set yet it sounds much better on the Sound Selection CD. Go figure.



Edit: also not a super fan of how the day/night village themes are presented as a single track. The Sound Selection CD got that right by separating it imo.

You're forgetting, it's low quality for you and the other few music etilists 'round there - most people are just GLAD they got a FULL CD release of BOTW, because Nintendo doesn't tend to do that, at all. Most people don't detect those issues and think it sounds fine.

So overall I trust Chronology to be the "definite" version better than Premium Box.

However a few RayStorm arrange tracks in its own OST and Premium Box aren't included in Chronology though.

Because every album he's on under VGMdb doesn't have him credited as a composer.. just featured on the album (aka blue text). Unless you count his own music on GTA VC. I know perfectly what are included in both compilations.
There are identical soundtracks logistically wise, with different mastering. Be it re-recording or else.
Different choices were made, different outputs were produced, different "my" liking to them will be. =]

It has the same tracks as the USB version right?
Also do you think the hi-res digital release is just an upscale of the USB version?

The Usb version contains higher quality of the tracks (48 Hz) while the limited edition is lower than the usb one (44 Hz) but does have the extra tracks.


Unfortunately the limited cd and the usb version have been sold out...

BUT they announced that the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 OST will be available on digital music distribution globally from 23 May 2018!

That thing included by GOG.com is a game-rip, actually. I have the old MP3 files by the user who ripped the score.

EDIT:
Just to clarify, you may only find the licensed tracks in lossless, not the game score. Apart from a Drama CD, Indigo Prophecy had no other official release.

Sonic & Knuckles Collection was released for Windows 95 in 1997. The music playback system is MIDI, and the game includes two sets of MIDIs from which to choose. Those sets are entitled "FM Synthesizer" and "General MIDI," despite neither of them having anything to do with real Frequency Modulation synthesis; they are simply different MIDI arrangements. The game relies on the sound card or Windows' built-in DownLoadable Sounds ("gm.dls") for a sound font.

The "General MIDI" set generally (lol) sounds more "primitive" or "retro," which could be considered counterintuitive. Given any song, a version from one set tends to have a richer instrumentation and/or more accurate rhythm and/or unique embellishments than the other set (for embellishment example: the end of "Final Boss"). It's possible that two MIDI arrangers interleaved work on both sets, given the clear difference in sequence quality. For some reason, multiple tracks were replaced with new compositions. In many cases, the new compositions are preferable to the originals. Theories explaining the reason for the song replacements:

1. Michael Jackson's grunts/compositions were just too darn copyrighted
2. Drum and voice samples were too hard to fake using MIDI

Songs that went unused because extra Credits music is great. Apology for the above omission:

In the spirit of GNU Make's wonderful, bottom-up (read: scatterbrained) documentation, I now give you the high-level summary of what this is: This is all of the songs from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, interleaved with the "best" MIDI versions for each song in Sonic & Knuckles Collection. Even though Window's official Roland sound font could be considered the accurate baseline for the true Sonic & Knuckles Collection experience, the instrument samples' rates are only 22.05 kHz. That's basically half of CD quality. More is good, yesh? I used "WeedsGM3.sf2" instead because of its high quality. Pretend it's from a sound card that didn't exist in 1997: http://www.simpilot.net/~richnagel/#soundfonts

Rendered MIDIs with the foobar2000 plugin "foo_midi" with reverb and chorus processing turned OFF. Cheese reverb is cheese. I chose the "better" of each MIDI pair, so you don't have to! I fixed Sonic & Knuckles - Knuckles' Theme (A) by replacing the "Gunshot" instrument with "Chinese Cymbal." Low-note cannonfire isn't quite the same as Asian.

Rendered Sega Genesis with SMPSPlay 2.11. Problem: Playback clips, and there's no way to adjust the volume. I ended up using Cheat Engine to hack the output scale factor down by a bit shift. Searched for the YM2612 sample rate 53267 and modified surrounding bytes based on the structure in the source code. Similar procedure for the PSG. No more clipping! By the way, SMPSPlay 2.11 is the best way to render SMPS music driver games, because it doesn't clobber the DAC samples like on the Sega Genesis. Enjoy that percussion and Michael's sexy voice.

All ReplayGain-ed (with prevent clipping according to peak) for your optimal listening pleasure. Right Brad?

I don't know if what I'm going to say will be helpful in any way, but if you "google" Heavy Rain Original Soundtrack FLAC, you may come across torrents like this one (https://www.tcorea.com/bbs/board.php?bo_table=torrent_music_flac&wr_id=1407&page=549) (filesize: around 219 MB). Maybe the one offered on the store is indeed encoded in lossless?

I've only seen lossy encodes (+transcodes) of the Heavy Rain OST, going from 100 to 137 MB. Shit, if I had known it was on the store, I would have bought it years ago.

I don't know if what I'm going to say will be helpful in any way, but if you "google" Heavy Rain Original Soundtrack FLAC, you may come across torrents like this one (https://www.tcorea.com/bbs/board.php?bo_table=torrent_music_flac&wr_id=1407&page=549) (filesize: around 219 MB). Maybe the one offered on the store is indeed encoded in lossless?

I've only seen lossy encodes (+transcodes) of the Heavy Rain OST, going from 100 to 137 MB. Shit, if I had known it was on the store, I would have bought it years ago.

Yeah that is quite strange, that's why I tend to think first that the PSN version was lossless given the same exact torrent we both found, but never seeded ...

It is a possibility I do not know if it is the case. My release came from iTunes is 102 MB (digital booklet included) qui est sorti le 23 f�vr. 2010 on the PSN

Anyway, the file size is really suspicious : 244.91 MB so it could be lossless and this was released on March 1st, 2016 so at the exact time of the release of HEAVY RAIN on PS4 it says "surround" so maybe it is lossless... "This soundtrack supports playback of both stereo and surround sound formats and allows users to export all music tracks as stereo mp3s (via a compatible USB device)".

I have Death by Degrees, but is a VERY rare release that I have found only in a lossy format. For the other one I am not familiar with so I can't help you.

Last time I personally saw this was when I got my hands on the few tracks offered for "Wipeout HD", some years ago.

I can't express how amazed I am with the Super Famicom Magazine albums you managed to share. To my knowladge, this is the FIRST TIME EVER these albums (only Vol. 7 was shared before in lossless quality) were shared in lossless quality. I wish they would had pick him for KOF XIV and not SHA-V, the soundtrack would have been 100 time better. TATE_NORIO is a better composer, SHA-V is just loud, his best years have passed.

I don't know if what I'm going to say will be helpful in any way, but if you "google" Heavy Rain Original Soundtrack FLAC, you may come across torrents like this one (https://www.tcorea.com/bbs/board.php?bo_table=torrent_music_flac&wr_id=1407&page=549) (filesize: around 219 MB). Maybe the one offered on the store is indeed encoded in lossless?

I've only seen lossy encodes (+transcodes) of the Heavy Rain OST, going from 100 to 137 MB. Shit, if I had known it was on the store, I would have bought it years ago.

As for your soundtrack, something popped in my mind: isn't it just that these MP3s by having a "surround sound" are a little bigger than expected?
Last time I personally saw this was when I got my hands on the few tracks offered for "Wipeout HD", some years ago.

Although not being much of a vocal tracks lover (in the VGM domain), I even like the three tracks by PSY-FORCE in this one really much.
Tho it feels like the singer had just started his singing activity and also that he only had the mic packaged with the SBLive! sound card to perform (joke on the vocals recording quality), i like his quite epic performances, giving all he got. And the music composition is really cool, typical 90's synth-pop.
(it doesn't reach the epic-ness of Okkusenman, but still ;) )

But as i haven't played all Parodius games in history, i may not have the accurate complete perception of all their music.

It was the only one I did and had on psone.
I love the crazy and hilarious version of the great symphonic classics (Beethov/Mozart etc) It's completelly hare-brained and nutty like for example the ambiant in the manga High School Kimengumi/ Le coll�ge fou fou fou. I'm also a complete fan of it and his ost too. (Shunsuke Kikuchi work)

Yes it's true that in the funny context of the game, the music takes a lot of more sense in the first place. No kidding, i'm completely in stitches when I listen them.

Which is 37.8KHz with lossy packing (and lossier than latest MP3 packing algorithms).

Yeah I found this link with the EX collection and the few tracks of the Psone version a few years ago. In fact there is a gamerip mp320 on a topic, but I think that a complete gamerip in Flac would really do justice to the ost console quality.

Apart from these cases and the CD-DA ones, the majority of PSX games were just using the MIDI-type soundfont embedded in the disc's data.

But indeed, even though it's "less" than basic MP3, it can still be quite enjoyable (like with ZANAC X ZANAC (Thread 216164))

Very interesting article, and actually if the original format was in lossy (XA compressed), this is also why I express the frustration that this awesome console version is never released on CD, certainly because the arcade and arrange albums were already on the market.
In any case, the MP3 320 version is really cool to listen. (my ears just want more pure sound and details lol.)

This is a must listen when you like those three composers melodic work,
with many exclusive pieces (along some SFEX compositions),
all presented in blasting progressive-fusion arrangements (with some live instruments).

Waaah, I had forgot about "Dolphin" track, shivering all over again on this cheerful upbeat synth/flute work.

Project EGG re-released Sorcerian Complete as a limited edition packaged with a CD called Sorcerian Complete -Rare Selection- which is a recording of quite a few different Sorcerian expansions and titles on it. I was hoping I could find it somewhere.
