Thank you!!
Cowon looks awesome. About the other Music Players that you mentioned, are they able to play any of the lossless formats?[COLOR="Silver"]

All of them play FLAC quite easily. Again, you need very decent headphones for this kind of devices, otherwise the improvement you are going to see is going to be close to null. Each one of the devices has is own strengths, Cowon offers very nice sound, with its own signature but has very nice expandability, walkmans are excellent in the sound department too and offer very neutral sound (which is considered very good), both of them however will not drive what the iBasso dx50 can drive, which is very big audio "cans". The last two are considered audiophile daps, perhaps with cowon you can relax the requirement of very good earphones but I need to research more about it.

Why did I create the FAQ on the first post if nobody bothers to check it first? It clearly says that some stuff is forbidden and gives you links as to what exactly isn't allowed here.

Mario, Donkey Kong, Kid Icarus. Yes, those are good games.
My suggestion: Zelda A Link Between Worlds.
I'm interested in Between Worlds, but the problem is that I have never played any Zelda games. Which is sad considering I'm almost 25 years old. I don't really want the newest game to be the first entry into the series for me. I would rather something more vintage, like Ocarina of Time, to be the first. Plus that really looks like a great game on the 3DS. Thank god it isn't just a straight port. I'll definitely get it at some point, but I don't think it's the best choice as one of the first games.

Does anybody think the new Mario Party game looks good, or would it be a waste of $40? Haven't played a Mario Party game in 10+ years, so that is intriguing. Even though I know there's no online support. Really wish Nintendo didn't drop the ball on such a great opportunity. Then again I understand. Some games can take hours, and that isn't very possible for random people to either stick around and play it in full or not drop out at some point. So it makes sense I guess.

I'd dare to say it's a viable solution, for those interested. As things currently stand, in regards to this and every other "banned" material, no links must be posted openly on the forum. That being said, the Staff can't (nor would) monitor stuff like private messages, or any other tool external to the board. It's not like stuff doesn't get around, even now.

That is the file I downloaded, and the wav files are in fact mp3 files in disguise. Someone took 128 kbps mp3 files and pressed/burned as an audio CD, which is why those wav files are identical to the mp3s I also have. Some files cut off at as low as 5 kHz, I hardly think they were recorded in that quality.

If you want to use wireless, go after Cowon or other Sony DAPs that are not audiophile. Wireless needs to sample a signal, then transmit it by wireless and then recover it back. There is loss on information on that but there are very good wireless headphones that minimize that. With audiophile DAPs using a wireless headphone is a no go, which is the case of both iBasso or the high end models with Sony.

Because I have downloaded quite a few different uploads from this lossless video game soundtrack thread and other threads which claim to be the FLAC version of onkey Kong Returns Original Sound Track. But when tested with audiochecker & analyzer of aucdtect program, the result is that almost all of the sound tracks of Kong Returns Original Sound Track are OF MPEG format, which is MP3, not FLAC, the lossless format.

Are they downloaded from bittorrent or ripped from original CD?

Sony's can't play lossless files, unless you were thinking of using .wav files and most of them don't have memory expansion. Based on that, I don't recommend them.

iBasso DX50 is still new and they are working out the firmware on it, but it offers the best sound sound quality overall and is pretty cheap (around $250, plus you need to buy Micro SD cards for the memory). It's a newer player. Prepare for a few minor headaches until they get a perfect firmware going, but the sound quality is worth it. It really is a near-audiophile grade player (you have the choice of a headphone jack driven by an amp, lineout which uses the DAC but not the amp -perfect for Aux jacks in the car- or coaxial out, so you can feed the signal into a high end DAC) I like the interface as well.

Cowons have served me well and they have the best interface overall (well, the D2 does...the C2 one is butt-ugly). They're nice to use and the EQ is good and you can probably find a D2 for less than a DX50, but the jump in sound quality of DX50 makes it hard to recommend a Cowon right now. Again, especially if you like lots of low end in your music, Cowons have a reputation for bass rolloff.

I say avoid wireless headphones, the signal degrades over a wireless connection. I don't know of any wireless ones I'd recommend.

Nice upload, a lot of games lately only have these samplers released in Japan, I hope it won't be the case here. Practice makes perfect, the problem you'll face the most will be at translating. No your not. Those cat suits are terribly lame even by Mario standards. MEOW!

I hate Mario not because of him (SMB3 was a classic, 64 was great, PM2 was the last fully creative game, & Galaxy 1 had amazing presentation) but because of the obvious money train Nintendo has been riding on for the past decade. It's obvious that they rehash and do as little changing around as possible like most of their franchises (ALBW is just LTTP 2 with references from cell shaded Link's games) nowadays but since Mario and co. is pretty much a god tier "brand", the train will continue huffing and puffing along. :(

I'm sure SM3DW's music will be great for the most part though.

Not really....the uh....gsf's or whatever format it is will have the same quality and smaller size. Also people can then change how the decoder plays them for their personal tastes, as opposed to mp3 or flac which would be fixed in that regard. The only reason I could think of to do this is if the music doesn't playback properly from that format. Ex. In the case of Ecco the Dolphin for the Sega Genesis, some tracks don't sound quite right when played from the VGM's since the sound core used in the VGM decoder apparently doesn't do something correctly. I have no idea, that's just what is stated in the notes for the VGM rip of the game.

Hmm okay, one last question.
How can I see how much kbps an SPC file has? foobar shows me a "?"

VGM formats like SPC don't have a bitrate in the way that mp3s or Flacs do. I can't accurately describe off the top of my head how the VGM formats work but if you're familiar with how MIDI music works, the VGM formats work similarly to MIDIs in principle. Think about it like this, how can Chrono Trigger be only 4 MB (4 MB or 8 MB, I can't remember) on the SNES when the Original Sound Version encompasses 3 CD-Roms, 700 MB times 3 = 2.1 Gigs of audio.

Hopefully someone on the thread can expand on the specifics of how VGM music actually works so that everyone can be more knowledgable on the matter, myself included.

You were so damn lucky, I had my first taste of those wonders until 1999 thanks to emulators. Still, it's quite odd that someone who enjoy these jewels of the silver-age doesn't like platformers. But it's not like it's an awful crime, I don't like text adventures, flight simulators, life simulators and tower defense games. I guess for me the platformers, shooters, RPG and fighting games killed those for me.

Does it make sense to extract the soundtrack from a SNES (or GB etc.) rom and to convert to FLAC or MP3 or whatever?

It makes no sense at all. Roms for chiptunes are at most 100MB, the resulting lossless or MP3 might be up to 1000 times larger than the original files. If its emulated, it not worthy at all. You can convert them yourself with the little ROMs and emulators and the quality of the conversion simply doesn't matter as an emulation will NEVER be the same quality as the real hardware. It's like making lossless out of lossy. No, it's like making lossy out of lossy.

VGM file formats are simply ripped code out of ROMs which contain computer code usable for the machine it was written for or through emulators. The code only contains the music portion and not the game, they can also contain plain text headers for identification and track tagging.
When one of these files is played through an emulator, the result will depend on the capabilities of the emulator and the functions emulated. Think of it as if you want to listen to a Beatles tune but the closer you can get is to listen to the music track with a bunch of singers impersonating the real Paul, John, George and Ringo.

Chiptunes output through a system is the same not so different from being emulated through a system emulator or plugin. All it is doing is generating 4-bit ADPCM waveforms when prompted to although with much older hardware which can cause faulty waveforms often. If anything chiptunes being emulated are better then the originals because you will get a much more accurate Square Wave, Triangle Wave, etc along with being able to eliminate interpolation, increase the sample rate, etc since it runs on better hardware. Maybe for nostalgia reasons it doesn't sound as "accurate" but it is doing it's intended purpose but now without the limitations of older hardware. And being output through newer tech the 4-bit ADPCM waveforms can be truncated into a 16-bit (or whatever bit you convert it to) waveform and due to its extremely simplistic nature, it might as well seen as lossless or all FLAC releases of anything involving chiptunes are crimes.

For VGM it's the same thing as above just more complicated waveforms. An actual comparison would be if someone made a song with a synthesized keyboard versus using the exact same thing except 20 years later using an emulated VST of the keyboard's functions. At the end it's all "lossy" (aka Bullshit) or not depending on your perception.

Now the real crime is releasing FLACs of audio with massive frequency cutoffs like MP3s or worse.

It's when you convert them to MP3 or, God forbid, FLAC, and pass them around to nubs who have no idea what they're getting, who have no idea about plugins and sound code rips, who then start to rely on others for these stupid ass transcodes, when they should be using the sound code rips and plugins themselves to begin with, and making their own FLAC/MP3 when need be. It's like a trillion times more efficient. I like to make FLAC tracks out of the NSF to play them on the same music player as the other types of music I have on my android phone.

Will you stop saying that? The moderation around here has been a bit rigid in the past but usually only when people started yelling at each other and that hasn't happened so far. Honestly, I don't see why discussion of lossless music technology within "The Lossless Video Game Soundtrack Thread" is something that needs moderating. It's well within the remit.

Just because you can say something doesn't mean you should.Personally I would move tech posts to a separate thread. It does say Lossless Video Game Soundtrack Thread, not Lossless Video Game Soundtrack And Technology Thread.

Well I finally got Ys Celceta Silver Anniversary Edition, and was trying to to rip the soundtrack to upload, but EAC keeps giving me file creation errors.

I made sure the directory name was short, and the track titles aren't too long either.

Everything is set up according to Vegeta's guide.

I get that error when I select test and copy compressed or uncompressed.

It looks like it starts extracting, but when it gets to the point where it tests the file, I get the error and no song file is created.

I instantly get the error however when I try to copy without testing.

Try double checking the settings, you may have missed something.
If they are correct, you may have missed the Check for gaps option.
Otherwise It could be a error with the CD itself? I don't know.

Does it contain all the songs from Celceta? I mean, I posted the OST earlier in this thread, but that's only songs from that game, and the 3-disc soundtrack has more than just Celceta on it IIRC.

That said, I have a super big surprise for this thread coming tonight.

This thread is for official CD/digital releases (or at least it SHOULD be), and I don't think Crash had a full official soundtrack released, judging from the quick research I just did.

That game uses sequenced music I think, so you'd need to look for a .psf file of the game and and a .psf player, which is emulation, which is an inaccurate sounding damn dirty lie, so making bloated "lossless" transcodes from it is self-defeating stupidity, imo.

Anyway, look for the game's .psf and a .psf player (use Google), you may be satisfied with that. But if you make FLAC transcodes from it and upload it somewhere, I will hunt you down and kill you. ;)

Yeah. If you want scans, they're included in the release - since it includes logs, the spectrum analysis is fine, and 600dpi scans of the materials are included, there is basically no way it's not the real deal. It happens sometimes.

Well if you're going to go through the trouble, you might as well go all out with 24 bit and 96 khz recording.

I'd try to record it in the highest quality and with the least amount of fuckery possible. Best bet would be directly into sound card or whatever...atleast I think that's how you're supposed to do it. 24 Bit just cause, but 96KHz is overkill, 48KHz should be fine....

Depending on what you want to record though, cause the PSF style music didn't even hit 44.1KHz. I'm thinking of the start-up sounds though, no idea if those would be the same or not.

Why don't we have a topic for this kind of questions in the "general discussions" subforum ?

Anyway :
- here is a very quick sum-up (http://hothardware.com/News/Research-Data-Suggests-Higher-Music-Fidelity-Little-More-Than-Snake-Oil/): anything higher than 16/44KHz is a waste of data and time (the "192kHz is 6x higher than the maximum frequency anyone can hear" part on that page is wrong because 24-bit / 192kHz allows to store sound up to 192/2=96KHz not 192KHz, other than that it makes a lot of sense)
- of course there are quality differences between FLAC and MP3, MP3 is called lossy because some quality is lost in the compression process. If you stick with a good MP3 encoder (Lame) and keep the bitrate high enough, though, most people could not hear a difference in an ABX test.

Just a reminder that any serious audio 'ripping' with the PS1 hardware should be done with a SPDIF mod anyway. And then your bitstream parameters (depth, sample rate, etc.) are fixed.

24-bit /192 KHz music is nonsense. I do only use it during Music Production so I can be sure not to loose any music date, the end Product is usually in 16-bit 96 KHz FLAC (I could go down to 48, but I don't see how 96 KHz is as harming to the ear as 192 KHz is).

The reason I want to get the highest Fidelity, why I use FLAC and Lossless Stuff is because I like to preserve music and avoid generational loss.

But most CDs usually come in 16-bit/44.1 KHz by standard so I usually don't worry about CD-Rips. (Or even DVD-Rips which go to 48 KHz usually for Movies).

Minute at best. You're better off just doing flac and the people who want mp3 can convert it themselves. Because otherwise you'll be uploading in the quality settings they want. You posted a 320CBR rip? Then you get cries for VBR V0. Why manage 3 uploads when you only need to manage 1?

Also, before you get crap for it, I'd refrain from using so many, or such large, images. They just tend to annoy people who are only looking for soundtracks, and they take up space. A good solution would be to wrap them in spoiler tags, and then those who do not wish to see them (and would be the ones to complain about them), wouldn't.

Precisely why it's useless: even people who know it exists don't use it.
Unfortunately, i wish that topic got more love. I'd like it if some of the more educated users here made guides to teach us about this stuff, since it's so easy to pick up wrong information, that doesn't usually get remedied until someone here calls you out on it.

Just a reminder that any serious audio 'ripping' with the PS1 hardware should be done with a SPDIF mod anyway. And then your bitstream parameters (depth, sample rate, etc.) are fixed.

This. No idea how to go about it myself, but SPDIF is your best bet. At the very least with a PS2 anyway...

That's not the thing ... people just don't want to share it because Chris H. asked them to not share it. And People here Respect his plead.

Most of the people here who upload Stuff respect the creators of the Music. You mainly only see music here that's ether not available anywhere (Stuff you can only get via Import), or old Stuff where the Artists stopped getting money from long ago (during the initial sales via the stores). And often Music for AAA Games, where the Artists technically already got a biog amount of money just for working for the Studio.

Indie or Charity Music will be on here less often because that would actually cause a bigger harm on their Income (which again, many people here respect).
The only reason Jesse uploaded it in the first place was because he thought that there was no other way to get it now for others, but since Chris said that there will be an option to buy later, he removed it.

All you need is 48kHz @ 24-bit.

Yes, 48kHz, not 44.1kHz.

The only reason we have 44.1kHz today was because of CD to be over 60min (mandatory for Philips) and to be able to hold the 9th Beethoven's Symphony (mandatory for Sony).

It's not about law, money or forum rules, it's just about respect.
Chris H. have been a gentleman by register here and asked us politely to not share it.

I can understand than most of us are not able to buy all these OST, and I'm ok with that.
If we don't want to respect some big record label or AAA Editor, it's OK ! (well it depends of many other things too....), but at least, we can respect a wish from a composer who try to live of his passion.

Has a lossless rip of Blood (1997 PC game) CD-DA tracks ever been done ?
It is a nice gothic / ambient soundtrack, 34 minutes long, with a few tracks worth listening.

I'm a bit late to the party on this one - A+ post, but... I think there are a few tracks missing on disc 1 of this album. I've re-downloaded just to make sure it wasn't a fluke issue.
The missing tracks are 1.05, 1.15, 1.17, 1.20. If anyone has a complete rip, it'd be much appreciated.
Everything else in the post is complete, I think, thanks again!

Its on its way as i speak. :p Should get it tomorrow on the release day. Mainly got a 3DS for this and Pokemon Y, first Nintendo handheld. (already have a PSP and PS Vita)

Hmm, probably going to get a bunch of normal DS games also as its backwards compatible, got the actual Cosmo Black 3DS on a black friday sale on Amazon.co.uk, 99. :p

Edit: On a side note, people still buy Creative sound cards? Thought the Asus Xonars would of converted people by now. (I have a Xonar D2X btw)
Ah, you lucky bugger. Let me know how it is. It's getting some killer reviews. I wonder if this version will have different music? Does anybody know?
Pokemon X/Y and Bravely Default are certainly strong reasons to get the 3DS. 2013 has been a very good year for games for the handheld.

Unfortunately, it seems that the "regular" original soundtrack has the same issue with tracks missing.

Not bad. I just hope the NA collector's edition doesn't cost $100. I'll be fine with a $60 price, but anything more... ehhhhhh, Iunno. We'll see.

Bummer. Post is so damn unreliable. I'm waiting for some 3DS games to come in the mail next week as well.

I checked it out. I compared the songs and they're different, but the actual songs might be the same. I haven't listened to the original soundtrack in a couple of months, so someone else will have the shed some light. It's entirely possible it's new songs though, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're recycled songs with new names.

Desides, what do you think about the HD558? I own them and, to tell the truth, they sound pretty good. What's more, they're 60$ cheaper than HD598 and, as far as I know, by modding them one can get sound very reminiscent of the HD598. The mod is quite simple. It involves the removal of the internal foams.

All in all, Sennheiser makes phenomenal headphones.

I just hope that whatever you do, you account for the electromagnetic emissions coming from the motherboard (which are a lot), that doesn't exactly look very hi-fi.

The 598 is an upgraded 558. I don't believe the transition is worth it if you already own a 558, but if you don't own either, then in my opinion the 598 is the better choice.

Amazon currently has the AKG Q701 on sale for half off, and I'm wondering if I should buy it to upgrade my current gaming headphones (ATH-A900X)…

I have been happy for a few years with my Asus Xonar HDAV Deluxe 1.3 and you can definitely hear the difference.
You new card looks great so glad you are happy with it.

Well, for anyone serious about listening to their lossless collection with headphones... I recommend you demo this (https://www.lehmannaudio.com/home-audio/headphone-amplifiers/linear-usb.html) It doesn't come cheap, and so it shouldn't. It's hand made in Germany. Superior workmanship/components. No sound cards, just run your signal straight to the onboard DAC. The warmest digital music ever. Period. Needless to say, vinyl + cd's are incredible with quality players.

I'd recommend the Van Den Hul USB Ultimate cable as well. (the same guys who make top-class interconnects) - get Sennheiser HD700.

In my humble opinion... if you are going for headphones why not a dedicated DAP? I know that my F886 can't drive some very exotic headphones... but then again, if you are going for an external DAC, connected to the PC... to listen music in the headphones why not then a proper soundcard and proper speakers? You don't really need very expensive speakers to get the best of sound... I use JBL two way speakers combined with a dash-in sony stereo, then a logitech subwoofer. The quality that I got from them is amazing, although there is hissing, little minimal, but my room is so quiet sometimes that I can hear it. My XBA-30 get closer to said quality, with no hissing coming from the DAP but no subwoofer....

Tales Weaver Exceed by Vanilla Mood [FLAC/CUE/LOG]

Album Information (http://vgmdb.net/album/18705)

Part I (http://www.mediafire.com/?aan4j9vaccar3vl)
Part II (http://www.mediafire.com/?gn3bkmlwkukvrxa)

So, what is this? This is a Talesweaver (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talesweaver) BGM arrangement album by Vanilla Mood, a group of four girls who possess formidable skills with their respective instruments (violin, flute, piano, cello). Every piece here is arranged to a degree where it stands alone magnificently while retaining some elements of "RPG music". Although some people may dismiss this as "cheesy," I think this is a melodic, heartfelt album where you can see these kawaii girls () put a lot of effort into the arrangement. The album also features a piece that is based on Borodin's Polovtsian dance from Prince Igor. :D

My rip in FLAC. Enjoy!

The links are dead at this moment, and I can't find this album nowhere...
Would someone please please re-upload this album?
