Was just compiling a list of scores I want to keep an 'ear' out for this year. But, I think that Desplat's Valerian is going to be similar to Jupiter Ascending in the sense that it's going to be one of the worst films of the year, yet it will have the greatest gem of a score. I hope I'm right. But, right now, I believe that that will be my favorite score of 2017.

This movie just screams Besson, but if we get Eric Serra again, I'm afraid there'll be too much back lash of being another Fifth Element clone.

I hope my favourite score of the year will be SW 8. I'd love to see what Williams will do with the themes from TFA and with new themes he'll craft. Also, I hope some of Cliff Martinez's music for "Logan" will leak (he's been replaced by Beltrami just the other day), I love Martinez's work for Drive. For Logan? I think he even completed some cues if not the entire score. He got plenty of time. Martinez was announced as the composer on July 1. I think the 40-minutes preview that was made to some critics (or whoever they were) contained Martinez's music.

If his scoring process is in any way similar to Desplat's for Rogue One then he probably didn't even start.

Just finished cataloging all 12 external HDD's.

I'm trying out the software: "Where Is It?"
And so far it's nifty.

Scan an entire disk drive and copy the list contents as if you were actually browsing the drive in your own Windows Explorer.

The search functions require some testing to figure out.
There's even an advanced search function with variables and expressions.

It can also scan the files and develop a hash checksum.
Handy if you want to test the files later if integerity is compromised.
And other things.

It can scan for dupes from the whole catalogue.
This is where I should have spent the overnight scans adding checksums to help this process.

I'll see how it turns out finding dupes.

But I can finally look up a movie or tv show or an album and quickly find out which external it's on and then plug that in.

Well, I like having lossless material as it can act as base source files to work with for editing, or conversion, or for whichever other reason, but otherwise... I mean, I can't hear any frequency over 19 kHz, so lossless is useless to me from that standpoint.

Unless I have the proper equipment to accurately discern the difference, if I've convinced myself that a lossless version of something sounds better than its 320kbps counterpart, then yes, I as well think it's just a sort of placebo effect.

Also, seems like lossy-mastered material is almost 100% more likely nowadays than like 10 or 15-20 years ago.

Er...just because it doesn't reach or go past 20.5 kHz doesn't actually mean it's lossy. There are many tracks out there that are lower in frequency than that track, yet are still considered lossless. The only definitive way to confirm it's lossy nature is if there are clean cut offs or much stranger looking frequencies (though ears are the best judges). Plus, would Nintendo really put an inferior source of music on CD? I know we make fun of them a lot, but they're not that incompetent. I know there's still the chance that it could be the case, but it's highly unlikely at this point.

It doesn't help that Spek is actually not the best program for spectrograms. Sure, it can give good quick results sometimes, but it's often inconsistent. Audacity is the better program to use, seeing as the results are more consistent and truthful to their sources.



Feel free to judge though. I know it can be a matter of opinion, despite the technical information.

Music can be as high or low in frequency as it needs to be fit for the composition. It's just that there are some standards set that some people do cling to (i.e. a particular threshold needed to be reached), which will not always be the case. This proved especially true with Trent Reznor's and Atticus Ross's work, which often do go lower freqency than higher.

A piano on one release can be as low-frequency as that similarly to Minecraft's sound, or can be as loud as almost reaching all the way up on anything else. How it's produced and mastered matters just as much, I would think. But the base sound from which it is manipulated in whichever fashion still probably counts for most.

The email notifications I could give a fuck about, the 'liked' system I liked, as it was like a sort of subtle way of 'liking' something without making a post every time you do, but it wasn't really that important, but the PM system is important and surely I don't want to see the end of it.

That's what I liked about the like system. Instead of having to quote someone or even type something out, all you had to do was simply click "like". Never cared about getting any. It was just convenient for everyone. But it's not a huge loss. We know what it's like to not have it as it was only around for a little while.

I was about to say... people take classes for this stuff and often don't end learning any further than the basics... stuff you could learn on your own, completely free of charge, with just a little patience.

I know there does exist other more 'advanced' you can take, but, I mean...

The fourth year was the most fun, because that year I had a teacher who was willing to let me be flexible with how I approached projects.
I.e. eschewing Photoshop, and using Sony Vegas instead.

The vast majority of these classes, secondary or college level, exist for no other purpose than to pimp Adobe products. Actually learning anything useful or productive is beside the point.

I figured that out pretty quickly.
They just seemed like crash courses in getting you interested in buying the software.
But even so they were enjoyable for what they were. Noodling around in Flash was especially fun.

I started into Flash when it was called Macromedia Flash. Playing with its animation tools was fun at the time. Thank goodness it's going the way of the Dodo.
