i read really detrimented reviews so far. not a potter fan but i dont hate it so i take the reviews seriously. its not like im not gonna see it, a friend of mine wants me to go with her because she IS a potter fan.

Hmm.....it seems my second new CD suffers from a form of copy protection. Whenever I play it on computer, it sounds compressed and distorted as fuck. However, on my CD player, it plays perfectly fine. Any help here? I know dbpoweramp has a thing for it, but I can't download it due to internet failing me once again. Does EAC have a thing for it?

Edit: Nevermind. It seems the computer's sound chip was glitching out, so I reset it. It all works fine now.

Organizing my PS2 games into disc holders that allow for the inlay and booklet.

They come with 15 sheets on each loop, but due to the size of the disc(s) plus inlay and booklet I was only able to get 8 per loop.

So either I'm going to need to buy more, I have around 500 PS2 games, or see if I can't find something else to but the sleeves in.

WHO HERE IS GOOD WITH COMPUTERS?

This morning the hard drive of my desktop began clicking like crazy. Very rapid, like drumming your fingers on a table. It wasn't very loud, but it was audible enough that I could hear it over some music.
The drive passes a SMART test, a Short drive self-test, and a Short Generic test (I'm using SeaTools). Even so I'm still a little worried.

Is this actually a problem with the drive, or is there, like, crap getting stuck in the fan which might be making the noise?

If you haven't already opened it up and used a can of air for dusting, I'd suggest that.
Power down and dust it out.
For thick areas on the (plastic) fans that accumulated grime over time, I'd use cotton swabs dipped in isopropyl alcohol.
I have a 2 oz. shooter that I use to dip the swab in then run it around the top of the shot glass (metal really, it's from the 007 exhibit with a faded 007 on the side) to remove any excess alcohol before using on the fans.
Let it dry and then start it up.

I'd also suggest trying out Raxco PerfectDisk and use their "SMARTPlacement" patterns to defrag your HDD.
1) Free space defrag
2) SMARTPlacement (change drive settings to use "Conservative")

1) The free space defrag will help free space at the end of the drive so when you go to use the SMART defrag, there'll be plenty of free space for the largest files to sit at the end while everything's being placed.

Remember that for mechanical HDD's, the computer prefers to read in a linear fashion of the disk from start to end, like a CD.
It can read if the file is fragmented all over the drive.
They're designed to.
But Solid State Drives can read much faster since they're not mechanical like Hard Disk Drives.

2) The Conservative plan supposedly helps prolong the drive's lifespan. It's what I use on all my external drives.
The only files that remain defragged after that plan are usually remuxes.
So I take them and try to crunch the size down by remuxing again but with less subtitles. They're usually old remuxes that have a dozen different languages in subtitles.
I'll even convert the AC3 commentaries to AAC.
After that, it fits perfectly into the space that would be fragmented.

For drives with the OS on it, you can use "Classic Alternative" which is "faster" access to the entire drive than Conservative's placement of files but still keeps the drive healthy.
They have "Aggressive" plans, too. They're supposed to be good for active drives like ones you use to install games. But that will supposedly reduce lifespan of drives.
They did tests on their placement plans and that's what they came up with.

I've found that even using Conservative on a drive with an OS, you still achieve the same level of performance as you would with the "Classic" or "Classic Alternative" plans.
Only a few things would really show the difference, but that's just an extra second or so for some things.
And, I mean some really rare conditions you have to actively look for a difference in operational timings.

For safe measure, I'd invest in another drive to back up whatever's on there.
If there's nothing important to back up and you're gonig to replace the drive soon, anyway, I'd suggest upgrading to a 250GB SSD.

My desktop and laptop have nothing but Solid State Drives in them.
The performance is greatly improved.
I want to get a 500GB SSD for the desktop to have more ample room to do work like remuxing, etc.
MORE GAMES.

It's a breeze to play any game with a SSD.
Loading times are significantly faster since the random access is better over a mechanical drive.

I have 2 externals that occasionaly click sometimes.

One of them I just defragged recently and it no longer clicks. :noonecares:

I'm going to start indexing them in case I lose anything, it should be easier to get it all back again.

The other one, it clicked when I first got it from my brother.
It was wiped clean. No partition.
I had to format it and assign NTSF to it.
Even after I've added files to it and defragged it, it would still click.

Then one day, it just stopped clicking. :noonecares:

Also, try this...

1) use CCleaner to "wipe free space" (1 pass)
2) Free space defrag
3) CCleaner "wipe free space" (1 pass)
4) SMARTPlacement (cons. / classic alt)
5) CCleaner "wipe free space" (1 pass)

Depending on the size of the drive and your CPU capabilities, this could take a couple days or a couple centuries. :noonecares:

For HDD's, wiping free space helps with fragmentation.

Because when you delete a file, it's just been (more or less) hidden from you.
Software can still recover the file if you haven't written anything over it's last known location (including defragging).
The more writing that happens, the less chances of you recovering the files.
Wiping free space will write 0's and 1's (or anything random) over the free space.
Burrying the deleted files even deeper from the surface that you'd need a lab to recover the files rather than software.

With regards to the fragmentation, you definitely want the free space wiped.
Depending on how bad the fragmenation is, there's a chance that the next time you write a file to the drive, it will pick up fragments of a deleted file.
Thus making the file you just copied completely useless.

A personal case scenario:
I deleted files the normal way. I usually do free space wiping once a month or every 3 months.
Then I copied a movie to the external HDD.
I played it later only to find that every so often it picked up the deleted file.
Thankfully, I was alone and not hosting family.
THERE INSERTS OF PORN IN THE MOVIE.
Bloody hell! It was just like Fight Club.
I had already deleted the file from the computer so the only copy was on the external that was laced with pornography.
I had to download it again.

It not need only apply to porn.
In cases where there was no porn, video frames were just corrupted.

That drive died shortly after.

Since then, every external gets processed and routinely checked.
And the only time I lost an external is when I dropped it. :noonecares:

It does grab MP4, by default.
It grabs the source in chucks and reassembles, probably using FFMPEG protocol.

The process (the grabbing and combining) is lossless.
The audio it grabs is whatever is on the server.

MP4 container: AVC/h264 video, AAC audio (ogg, etc)

You can run the full options and see what else it does.
I don't play much outside the main command.

I think you can do a full scan on the link and it will show you options of what's on the server.
And then you pick whatever you want.

If you don't see much video, the server doesn't have much to begin with.
You can grab from social sites and news sites (the fake news sites like comicbook.com, etc that host their own video encodes for online streaming of video content; trailers, behind the scenes, interviews, etc).

It's an all-in-one PC, so I ripped the back off the machine (what a struggle! Those clips are hard to deal with) and the fan itself looked pretty okay. Each of the blades had a fine layer of dust but it wasn't a horror show in there.
I gently swabbed them each with a q-tip and used compressed air for the harder-to-reach parts. The fan itself seemed to be working fine; it spun, at least.
I also blasted the vents with the compressed air to clean those out too.

I plugged it all back in, powered it on and to my horror the fan coughed and wheezed worse than it had before. I probably fucked up by blowing dust further into the machine. :ashine: Turned it off in fear.

I came back a few hours later and powered it back on and the fan seemed to have calmed down. But get this: if I give the top of the machine a good enough tap, the fan starts going full blast. :confused:
Ran CoreTemp to see if this was in any way negatively affecting the temperatures of anything (I was wondering if the fan was on full blast to deliberately compensate for some hideous temperature rise). Apparently temps are normal, but I'm a worry-wart and am still assuming something terrible will happen if I ignore it. :ashine:

Whatever you do, don't use the air can on the fans while it's operating.
That'll do wear and tear a lot faster and the fan will eventually come right off the hinges.

Should point the compressed air can into the vents for the power supply, too. Make sure it all blows out the back.

CPU, GPU, extra fan (for outward distribution, etc).

If it's a small fan that's not part of the CPU or GPU, you can replace it easily with something else of the same size.

GPU and CPU fans generally need a whole replacement.
Some CPU's, you can buy fan replacements and just switch it out.
GPU fans are generally package deal with the card itself.

If he took a lot of care with his filming, you won't see anything extra in the new data.

A lot of modern movies with open matte counterparts tend to have a mixture of actual open matte content and cropped scenes.
Mostly, it's easier (and cheaper) to crop the scenes with CG.
That's the argument, at least: They render a lot less cropping it instead paying to render data you'll never see (until you do).

I watched an open matte capture of Prometheus from a Russian HDTV broadcast.
The entire movie was rendered in open matte.
From a digital perspective, they probably had to render it all, anyway to a giant frame and then just crop it later in post.
It's not like pure CG movie where every frame has a set aspect ratio (as apposed to live action where multiple cameras can be used).

Silent Hill: Revelation (deplorable but has its minor perks) has a 3D bluray which happens to be rendered in open matte for the monsters.
The spider/doll scene is fully rendered for open matte.

I strongly encourage to watch movies in open matte if available.
Regardless of not being the director's intention, it happens anyway and it's a new experience.

In some instances, scenes with no CG at all have merely been cropped.
Probably because for such static scenes of humans talking at a table (like Equilibrium), only one camera was used and it was framed for 2.40:1 at the time of filming.

I adore fighting games, I grew up on Mortal Kombat, and I can tell you that the reboot of MK is fantastic. Even if you are not a master of fighting games, you will do fine in MK9 and MK10, because the games do a wonderful job of being both forgiving and very helping when you are learning how to play with a character. I say, go for it if you like!

Trust Ridley Scott to do something different.

I don't really trust Scott. Thanksfully, he's barely involved with the movie. I trust far more director Denis Villeneuve, composer Johann Johannsson and cinematographer Roger Deakins, not to talk about the cast. I'm truly excited to see Gosling, being an amazing actor (look to "Drive" and "La La Land").

It's a fun diversion but I'm sure it loses its charm a few levels in. Once again Nintendo shows that they're kind of ass-backwards in their understanding of how this sort of stuff works and have charged ten dollars for the app. I think they've severely underestimated how cheap mobile gaming (and mobile gamers) generally are.

Nintendo is like a guy who despite being pretty successful over the years just makes poor choices again and again.

The app itself is free to download though, not sure how you can pirate an in app purchase, but I'm sure there are ways, especially if your phone is jailbroken, which I've actually never jailbroken my iPhone, only my Touch. Anyways, overall, the cons definitely outweigh the bad in this scenario. At least in my opinion.

Subspace Emissary was literally the campaign mode...is there no campaign mode or something? I've avoided potential spoilers, because I want to pickup the game for my 3DS.

No campaign mode, or story mode of any type in the newest Smash.

I guess that makes Brawl more unique in the long run, but that's only a silver lining of a poor decision.

Sm4sh not having story mode does not make the game any less awesome, though. Everything else it has, it's amazing. I'd still recommend you the buy but it's much more better for the Wii U than 3DS. I'd wait for a Switch port.

And the Switch to me looks like a goofy idea, but I've always been very disappointed in general with the call to homogenize console and handheld. I feel like the two should have their own quirks and benefits, and having the same exact game on handheld and Wii U... it doesn't feel like a right way for things to go. To me at least.

Here we have a console that seems to replace both Wii U and 3DS. :-\

Off the top of my head the only golden goose of a game Nintendo has coming up is Zelda U, but I'm honestly petrified that even that won't be as remarkable as we've been told. Dammnnn I hope I'm wrong though.

My favorite Nintendo console has been the GameCube. Great design, great controller, even greater games. No gimmicks attached: no motion-plus, no 3D, no stylus, you just pop in a disc and boom: you're in Hyrule or Mushroom Kingdom. And there was no additional stuff like online or DLC or chat, it was just a gaming console through and through. It felt really wholesome in that sense.

Back when the Wii was their main console, they were pretty dead set on removing any method that allowed homebrew to be installed. However, once the homebrew crew came up with a method that allowed them to bypass any update, they pretty much gave up. Why are you talking about Scott? He's just the executive producer :laugh: There's Villeneuve directing the movie. And I read that J�hann J�hannsson worked early on on the score for both "Sicario" and "Arrival", I think even before filming had even started. I wouldn't be surprized if he did even on this one.
Anyway, the use of Vangelis's music in the trailer is great. I hope J�hannsson will use Vangelis's themes (and synths) as well.

Slowly waking up.

I had so much fun with Mad Max after I got out of the kiddie zone.

Now that I've played enough, a lot of it is based on the same mechanics as the Arkham games.

I've died a few times. Mostly fighting that one boss early on in the game.
My timing is sloppy do dodge attacks.
I'm more of a tanking player. I keep forgetting there's dodge and other things.

But a different boss was easier because there was more environment to use. A lot more flamethrowers.
And the perks to upgrade how many shotgun shells you can carry really helps.

I think when you start off, you can only carry 2 shotgun rounds: 1 in the chamber, 1 in your pocket.
Later, you get double barrel shotgun, and then upgrade to carry 4, so 6: 2 in the chambers, 4 in your pockets.

There is something immensely grattifying about using a harpoon on a driver and then pulling them out top speed. :rofldata:

The convoys are really fun.
I really want to hit a convoy when there's a storm. Just like the movie.

I want to get to a part in the map where the convoys have tankers. Not just little wee cars.

Finished putting together a playlist; was also 'composing' some earlier.

It'd make sense for that to be my next purchase, considering how much I really use my phone these days. Still, considering how much you've used the money for the CDs you want, I'd follow suit.

I had Mad Max on PC/Steam for a long time and ended up getting it on Xbox One.

I got Suicide Squad on bluray, the extended cut.
But I knew I was getting that because my mom asked me if I had it already.

Every year, we pretty much know what we're getting because no ones wants to buy dupes and waste time sitting in stores for exchange.

At least, this Xbox version comes with a fully loaded car and will free up space on the PC.
I've played enough to know exactly how to play and win every fight.

I've been playing a good deal of the Medal of Honor: Allied Assault games lately. It's basically become a tradition that I do so around this time of the year; ever since about 2011.

It's also caused me to take even further notice of a some number of cues from Giacchino's scores! My, my, I love the music so very much. Not only are the games incredibly fun, and timeless classics to myself as well, but it's also an even greater pleasure hearing the background music during gameplay. :)

In other belated news, I hope everybody had a very merry Christmas and a great holiday.

It ended up being $90. If my aunt doesn't get me anything, I'll probably receive more cash from her.

My cousins and siblings and I all got a check from grandma on Christmas Eve. She died Black Friday. Extremely frugal woman, her biggest concern was always leaving us an inheritance. So my aunt gave us our checks (she's the executive of grandma's estate) and told us they were ours to do what we wanted with, but grandma wanted it to be something special. I think I'm gonna take a trip, finally leave the country for the first time in my life.

It's a common staple to me to keep getting those sweaters. Got one last year for Christmas as well. Funnily enough, I haven't visited a store of theirs for a while, thanks to it being replaced in the usual place we go.

It would be very nice to go on a trip when I'm older. Perhaps when I'm in college or much later than that.

Whew! Me too. And here I was thinking 2016 might have claimed another celebrity.

Finished installing my brand-new 2 TB hard drive.

It was a little confusing at first when it didn't show up in Windows, but the BIOS detected it just fine. Turns out I had to partition the drive, which I didn't know because I've never actually installed a 'new drive' before in my computer...except for when I purchased the 1 TB back in January. But that was a different story, as that was the base drive I re-installed and now run Windows 7 on.

Nevertheless, I have now some real space to be 'properly' utilized. Now to decisively set where I'll have everything go.
