I just wanted to let you all know that as of now, up until mid-August, I have decided to limit my time on the Shrine. I have more work to do now than I ever have done before and I literally cannot afford to miss my deadlines. So I will hardly be on here until my deadlines have been met. I have found myself on here much more than I ought to be recently and it's really eating up my time. It's too much fun being around you guys!

So, don't worry - I will be back. Just give me a couple weeks to finish up my work. And wish me luck for my deadlines.

From now until mid-August, I won't even need to post here, as you'll all know what I'll be doing anyway - lots and lots of academic work! :p

I originally posted this moving tale of lost loves, rekindled friendships and unadulterated joy on the first open thread I found
(latest purchases) though it more appropriately belongs here.

I just got back from a surreal surprise dinner a friend orchestrated, as far as I can tell, flawlessly. Some context is required.
A few years ago we dated for a while and lived together for just over a year until she broke it off unexpectedly. She was the
cause for some heartache but eventually she explained why she had to and, for lack of any reason to actually blame her, we
have been as close as two friends could be ever since. Anyway, some time ago, disrupting the well-established dynamic that
we had, she called me up telling me to make no plans for this particular evening. To the greatest of my surprises she had
booked a table for dinner at Gauthier in Soho - coincidentally, that is where I took her for our anniversary dinner and at the
time my booking required a full month in advance. We obviously had a wonderful dinner, a little something she meant to
thank me with for all the support I lent her in the years and most importantly for the friendship I kept alive and cherished.
At the end she had one of the waiters bring over a rectangular and relatively slim package. I started grinning, shaking my head,
because I had immediately guessed that it must've been a vinyl record and, given the context of the bequeathal, I knew it wasn't
going to be a trivial pressing. When I opened it, I found two records, face down:

First, at the bottom, "Whiplash" - one of the 1000 lim. edt.s re-pressed on red wax.
I missed on the RSD15 edition and she knew the movie was important to me so she laboured to get me a copy.
But that's literally nothing.

Underneath it, and so at the top (nb. I seriously wish I could upload a picture of this but I'm just too emotionally overhwelmed)
was a pressing of Coltrane's Blue Train. As soon as I saw it I was moved because it is my favorite record, jazz or no jazz
and the copy I had bought from an everyman records store in San Diego had long been lost. However she kept looking at me,
for a reaction, and then it dawned on me that the record felt... old. I looked at it again. When I read "blue note 1577" and
"Please Write to Blue Note Records Inc. 43 West 61st St., New York 23.", I almost dropped it.
Without delving into very boring detail, of which I am mostly ignorant myself not being a habitual collector of truly valuable
recordings, but - and she confirmed this - I was (and currently am) holding one of the earliest pressings of "Blue Train".
This thing is of immense value, by which I mean it could comfortably clear the �1000 bin if it ever went up for sale
(though this one won't because I can't imagine a scenario in which I would ever do something so absolutely insane). I actually
broke down in tears at the restaurant when I realized it and again when we said goodbye. I have done nothing but stare at it for
the walk home and I'm fairly certain I'm either still in shock or this has so deeply affected me I'll forever be an emotional wreck...

Hahahaha I just recently upgraded my Ortofon to Grado Gold but, to be honest, I'm in no way playing that record without a mono cartridge. I avoided the stereophile world on purpose, though I guess this is my life now :'( On the plus side, when (if) I get my hands on a Miyajima Zero, you guys will get an exclusive listen to the best recording of Blue Train evaaaaah. Heck I'll probably organize a party for it and will invite any interested Shriners living in London.

Just like I knew it, I made the thing way worse by just waiting instead of going to the dentist when it was just a little scratch, and now it's all gotten worse, and here I am not going to the dentist because I'm afraid I'm sure I'm gonna need surgery, braces, and a tooth extraction for sure. That's what I THINK I might need or will get.. haven't went to a dentist to say if it's true or not.

I'm kinda scared.. I didn't go to the dentist before when it was just a scratch because I was scared/didn't want the needle and shot of the anesthesia, but that was nothing compared to what I might get..

Syncing my phone, because the music library on it got screwed up again. This is probably the 5th time this has happened.

I have had this since April-May.. so I'm sure I might need to get that tooth pulled out and that's what worries me the most.. not to mention I might need braces, because.. some of my teeth have just.. moved reverse, if I explain myself right.. Go to the Dentist ASAP. I made that mistake of waiting when one tooth was a bit damaged, and had to have the tooth pulled out. the good thing is that I have one hell of a dentist. because with a simple anesthesia, and a ton of finesse, he pulled it out.

without me feeling any pain. the only trouble was me spitting blood for the next 20 hours and the hole in the gum. but his work was absolutely flawless. so if you know your dentist is good, have no fear. it'll work fine. if your dentist hurt like hell everytime...find a new one, pronto.

On lunch sitting in a garden in the local village. Never been here, I'm about an hour away from home. Checked out a book store and then down the road from there I went into a comic shop. It was pretty sweet - Transformers, Game of Thrones, Star Wars and Marvel/DC figures for sale everywhere. And comic books, of course. And in the back room was a display of Ttansformers on top of the glass cabinet - all for individual sale. Branching off of that was a room filled with Lego figures, also each for individual sale. You guys would've loved it.

I refuse to let iTunes tell me I don't have enough space on my iPod. I have my music in high quality and it's gonna stay that way, Apple! Which leads to me having to manipulate a lot of playlists so that it can all fit. :p

Today my mother gave me the usual monthly 20 euros, and I checked my wallet and I have 115 euros saved. Considering I only get 20 a month, I've been saving a lot and damn does it feel nice having money. I can't get shit but at least at the end the wait will be worth it. If I manage to wait til October and maybe even January 2016, I'll have like 200 or 300+. And that'll feel nice. And with a credit card in October I'll be able to spend the money in more goodies, but without spending it all.

You're not that badly off, Ponyo. Consider yourself lucky. My parents have never been able to afford to give me pocket money ever. On a single salary, we are currently 1,700 GPB overdrawn, and it's not even the end of the month yet. Money is the stuff of dreams for us. If I get money, it's from generous family and friends at birthdays or Christmas. Or I earn it by various means.

And sure enough, I listened to "Brothers In Arms" (AGAIN) and I couldn't tell the difference. So I'm happy. I found myself recently caring more and more about quality, but it's all in me'head... and yours too, no doubt. ;)

You're right, 95% of the time there's no audible difference between lossy and lossless, but there are some tracks where I really can tell the difference. "Brothers in Arms" is actually one of them.

And part of the reason I don't convert to 128 AAC is because I refuse to let the machines win. :p

I ended up buying it from Intrada's site because I didn't think I'd ever get it for a cheaper price. I think this score is amazing on its own, because that's how I was introduced to the score. (I haven't seen the film yet.)

I go to open a new tab, it opens two.
I want to close a tab, it closes two.
I want to shoot a gun in a game, it shoots two.
I want to right-click a folder, I click it once and it opens it.

I've tried troubleshooting and the Double-click rate is on the lowest it can possibly be. I've had the mouse just under a month and I'm already having a bad experience with it. I'm not sure if it's a broken mouse or a program has changed its settings... God dammit. It's an awesome mouse too, can't afford to get a new one.
