Friend gifted me 20 euros, so I got the only thing I could get.. New Super Mario Bros. U+Luigi. 20 euros, nice price. The Revenant DVD? serious, the only reason of this movie is a pure demo of UHD / HDR, so in DVD it's ridiculous, even in full HD, even upscaled to UHD it's not the true quality of this movie. ( I have compared , I have both version)

The movie should be see in its original format 4k/HDR ( native), no offence, just reality.

Not everyone overobsesses about Picture Quality...

If they're not botching movies, they're just repackaging just for a fancy cover.
Mad Max was entirely just a repackage with one new special feature and a fancy cover. The video transfer is the same as any other Warner Bros release out there, except for the very first release where the movies got individual crummy releases.
I couldn't believe how people got so hyped over their Mad Max release when it had nothing new. I could go to DeviantArt and commission someone to do a better cover. Done.

Here's the thing: some people don't really care. Visuals can be one thing, but if the whole isn't functional, then it's pointless. It's like complaining about graphics in a video game. The way some fanboys can talk about it makes me wonder why they even play the old anymore. It may be fact, but that just depends on the person. As long one can see anything period, things are good. So True. Some Of My Collections I Have (Composer Web Rips For Albums Like Once Upon A Time, Gotham Ect) Are Only MP3 128, All There Will Ever Be If There Is Never A OST Release. They Mean More To Me Than Some Official OSTs In FLAC.

Audio quality is less of an issue for me too, as my ears can't tell the difference between 128k and FLAC. Picture quality, on the other hand, has become somewhat of an obsession for me. :p That's why I traded in my entire DVD collection (250+). I now only buy films if I really like them, and then on BR.

I can't get a job, because I'm busy focusing in studies, without the studies I cannot get a job. I'm not making that up. :laugh: I'll shut up, I get the picture. Never mentioning it again.

It's just not for me. I can't figure out what's so great about the "big screen" experience because there's often so little to be gleaned from it that you can't from your TV at home.

Because I didn't say nothing wrong saying that, really, it's just how it is. I have a reason to back up what I say; in my cinema, tickets aren't that expensive, I don't mind the trailers, which I get to see in the big screen which I like, I also like the surrounds, but MOST IMPORTANTLY. I am GLAD that in my cinema I don't get screenigs full of people, no one disturbs me and sometimes if I'm lucky, I'm alone.

The materials is about big samsung uhd screen, last pana ub900 / rotel flagship + b&w 800 D2 serie etc., the cost is more than 30'000 euro

I have to say, I agree with Ponyo here (*gasps of horror abound*) ;)

I love the big screen experience. I very rarely go to the cinema, as it is pretty expensive, but I'll go if it's a film I've been really looking forward to. I'll have purposefully saved a little for the ticket beforehand. The two things I keep in mind are 1) Venue: If I don't have a choice of venue, I'll go to the nearest cinema. The last thing I want to be doing is paying for a lot of travel on top of my cinema ticket. It just so happens that where I live during term time at university there's a very decent, cozy little independent cinema. I've seen The Martian, Bridge of Spies, and The Jungle Book there since starting my studies in Winchester and not one of those screenings was in any way disturbed or frustrating. 2) Time: I tend to choose afternoon screenings during the week, often a couple weeks after the film has premiered. That means it's very quiet and I might even get the theatre to myself. You just have to be a little savvy.

For me, it's really worth it. The large screen immerses me in the picture and the surround sound is incredible and like nothing I could replicate in my bedroom or living room. The screen size in the independent cinema is actually a lot smaller than most big chain cinemas, which I quite like, as sometimes if the screen is too large I feel lost in everything that's going on. But to be honest it really depends what genre film you're watching.

My two pennies. Take 'em or leave 'em. Just don't kill me for 'em, seeing as everyone seems somewhat ratty today.

I only said it really depends with the people. Honestly, of course, if I didn't have the luck that my cinema was good, if I had the same luck as you, Skelly, and had lots of people annoying around, then I would not enjoy the cinema either and would agree with you, but since it's not my case I clearly enjoy cinema. I really really really do. And no matter how much you can spend and be lucky to have a huge ass home theater system in your house.. for me honestly it'll never be the same. Even if I was lucky to have just a surround system and a nice TV; it'd still be nothing (for me) compared to the quality my cinema gives. I believe I have some pictures of the screen I will show later.

If i'd go and see X-Men Apokolypse tonight at 7:30 Pm that'd be 15 € for the Ticket, plus a Coke and Nachos ~ 7 €

That's like 10 € per Hour of Entertainment, not a good Value to me personally, i'd rather buy an Album or a Game that
i can listen to/play more than once...

Last Film i saw in the Cinema was Avengers.... and i don't mean Age of Ultron :laugh:

For me, a ticket here is 6,90 euros, and in wednesdays you can go for 3,90.

And the food isn't as costly, and if it is, it's nothing but less than 3 euros for all.

You could always skip the Coke and nachos and save your money and buy real food. (I never understood the appeal of eating theater food. It's overpriced and has zero food value.)

Personally, I love going to the movies. It's like what Stephen King said once and I'm paraphrasing here: a '57 Cadillac and a Gremlin both get the job done of getting you to your destination, but a Cadillac is just more boss.

Other than candy and snack, there's also popcorn which are pretty nice. Kinder Bueno. etc.

I wouldn't get an Iphone except when you use a lot of Apple Products already,
it's restrictive and too expensive...

I'd go with an Android Phone like a Samsung Galaxy, they brought back the SD Card Slot
for the S7 which an Iphone does not have, being my biggest complaint about it...

I really really really really REALLY love Apple's iOS design, I find it SO pretty, in my own opinion, but I'm not rich, and I don't trust big companies anymore, and I really am tired of being so closed, in terms of what you can do to a mobile so I'm planning my next mobile will be an Android, no matter how much I will miss the prettyness of iOS (Which I have as an iPod, no iPhone)

Huh? Funny, I'd thought the terrible situation of Spain was bought by the horrible politics and government, not the EU. What I know is part of Spain's horrible things is due to politics stealing and stealing and stealing and massively stealing and going to fiscal paradises with the money. I'd guess the EU contributed to it forcing horrible cuts and stuff.

I told, from my country...they are certainty many others reasons why your country is dying (as Portugal, Italy , France), but the entrance into EU had no helped regarding the money conversion, in France it's was "funny".

Exemple : bread 5 FRF (normally 0.76€) finally 1€, but the salaries stay the same than before, so with the € french have lost a lot of buying power and it's the same case everywhere and during this time unemployment explode everywhere too!

So from my side, the EU is toxic and all country should leave. UK had choose the keep the pounds ( great idea) so now next step is clear. Switzerland and Swiss hate EU and we have bilateral arrangment but local people have a lot of problem because all the EU want to work in Switzerland and entreprises totally abuse about low salary etc, so many local are unemployed now and the revolution is coming.

I don't get it when people say this. Instead of debating why they like or dislike a certain thing, people on the Internet get all pissy and say "my opinion counts too!" Well, it doesn't count for shit unless you have a reason to back up what you're saying.

I don't like theaters because after paying for an expensive ticket I'm treated to twenty minutes of trailers for films I don't care about, surrounded by awful people who play on their cell phones or scream during the movie, a screen that's too big, and sound that's too loud. It's just not for me. I can't figure out what's so great about the "big screen" experience because there's often so little to be gleaned from it that you can't from your TV at home.

It's always a risk for me to go to theaters.

The ones nearest me are known to have their speakers blown. The highschool kids have no idea how to operate anything.
There's new management there now. But, I don't know. I'm never too hyped to watch a movie in theaters anymore.

There's two theaters I will go out to for movies because they are consistent with stability. Not one speaker blown. The screens are never dark or cheap light bulbs. They actually project so you can see.
One of them is too far to go alone. I'd rather go there with a friend, if he's not busy. The other one, they don't have a royal customer rewards system, so no free movie when you get enough points. So there's that. And that's a big that.

Another reason why I love the cinema is because, in both sound and picture quality, they are really great, no kidding. I thought they did 4K but they don't. Their screenings are so good in quality though! They also got Dolby Atmos, English movies, 3D.

Though the Atmos and 3D part may be lacking, specially 3D. My 3D is RealD3D and I never notice much 3D into the movies.. while some others with Blu-ray 3D do. So I dunno, maybe they don't do well 3D..

Yeah, but I like it, and some other do. I just dunno why I haven't been lucky enough to watch 3D movies in my cinema with good 3D that keep reminding me I'm watching something in 3D. Nobody does 3D movies anymore to immerse you, now it's just a cheap trick to get more money, gotta agree with you there.

Life of Pi, Avatar.. just a few examples of good 3D that use story with 3D. Jungle Book I was told had a good 3D but I didn't notice anything..

In Geneva too much expensive city :-(, a place for a 4DX cost almost the price of one day @europapark (42€) it's totally awful , when we go in family I have about 100€ for 3 persons! for kid it's the same price!

A normal place cost about 25€ so I prefer wait and buy the bluray and now the uhd bluray ( better than cinema because higher resolution / HDR / BT2020).

I saw Zooptopia / Minion / Star Wars7 in 4DX it's fun like a ride, but the cinemas is big and new with the latest technologie but I never buy food ( 10€ the middle bucket of pop corn serious Oo and more than 4€ the drink!) so I do my popcorn @home and bring my drink.

More than a DVD? Good grief!

The 3D conversion is horrible but native as Avatar just as all 3D should be but now regarding the UHD who has no 3D support the 3D @ home is dead.

All Marvel converted is awful and should be see in 2D native, only pacific rim has a true conversion.

Several anime are pretty good in 3D, Gravity native too, should be see in 3D but the rest....

Now the new aim is realism and HDR + BT2020 seems to bring that perfectly.

It's sad that 3D Blu-ray is dead, I like it, LOVE it, but have no 3D TV and doesn't seem like I'll be able to get any for a while.

The problem is that regarding the non support of 3D by the new format, builders like Samsung, Panasonic etc will no more add this option in their 2016 TV, even flagship, their are totally wrong because we have a lot of bluray 3D and they will be not see anymore on 2016 TV :-/

So I have the Samsung 85" flagship TV 2015 who is ( it's what not a certitude ) totally compatible with the new format ( 10 bit panel is necessary to see BT2020 space color and HDR otherwise you have just a better resolution but you loose the essential with the new format, realism , beautiful color and high dynamic range) and it s 3D so I will keep it longggggggggggggggg time!

If you buy a 2016 model, check well if the 3D is present , but Samsung has no more 3D TV.

Most of everything is finished in 2K.

Some movies like Captain American Civil War will have *some* scenes filmed in >4K with certain cameras.
But it won't apply to the whole film. So anything over 2K gets downscaled to match the rest of the film in 2K. Cropped, resized. The same way they treat IMAX movies in non-IMAX theaters.
Only certain cinemas with certain projects can play certain films in certain resolutions. Kind of a gimmick with so many restrictions and absolute conditions to be met. Those theaters are too few and way too far away to be worth considering.

Where I live, all the IMAX theaters have been dumbed down. No longer have 70mm projection screens. One closed down entirely. The other 2 IMAX cinemas are just regular theaters with larger screens. It's all 1.78:1 instead of the original aspect ratio of 1.43:1 for IMAX scenes.
We only have one place that can do 70mm film, but not IMAX, so it doesn't do any inhouse "digital remastering" (IMAX's DMR technology). It's just compatible enough for movies like The Hateful Eight and other films using the ultra widescreen aspect ratios.

Native 4K for film is extremely rare.
Cameras like Red Epic are about the best thing to use these days to get those ultra HD resolutions. But a lot of movies go through dozens of cameras.
Dozens of unit directors. Reshoots.

It's the same way with 3D movies.
Not all scenes are actually filmed in 3D. For a lot of movies, it's impossible to film the entire project in 3D. Most of it is 2D with 3D conversion.
The Hobbit was filmed in 3D as was Avatar. But The Hobbit is newer.
It's expensive as hell.
IMAX 3D? It's hard to enough to keep IMAX cameras on set when documentaries want them as well as other directors for other movies.

Christopher Nolan doesn't do 3D because he doesn't like the post-production conversion of 3D and he finds working with 3D cameras difficult and time-consuming when they're already on a schedule. That's why Inception was fought to be only in 2D.
The hallway scene wouldn't have worked out so greatly with the oversized 3D cameras.

Older movies only had select scenes in 3D as that was the most efficient way to do 3D. There was no need to convert the whole movie to 3D for a scene so simple as someone sitting at a table and eating Corn Flakes.
:laugh: Although, I can imagine someone like Wes Anderson making that happen if he ever went 3D.

The cameras need to get smaller with the same quality as Red Epics and need to be cheaper as well as available.

Why buy food at the cinema?? I've never understood why people do that. Just eat before you go in or after you come out. Afterwards is fun - you can discuss the movie over a meal. Eating is such a distraction from the movie anyway, and if your mind is focusing on what you're watching, your stomach isn't in the right place to be digesting food. It's actually not good for you (the fact it's all junk food doesn't help either). And it costs to buy food at the cinema! Why add more to the already-high cost of your overall movie-going experience? It's a no-brainer to me.

As a university student, I get a discount which makes my average cinema ticket between �7/8. Sometimes more, depends what movie/showing/etc.

@Ponyo - I want to see this cinema of yours you keep talking about. I don't remember you ever posting photos before. Did I miss them?

@Killgrave - I'd get an iPhone if you use a Mac of any kind, particularly with iTunes etc. It all works so well together. And, as Ponyo made a point of, Apple are so aesthetically pleasing. For an artistically-minded person like myself I love how iOS looks and works. I find Androids so frustratingly ugly and institutional. Apple makes everything a work of art.

I've never had an iPhone myself, but the new iPod Touches that have been released over the last few years are gorgeous and I've used other people's iPhones. I got my phone new last year. Go ahead, laugh:

Agreed. Picture quality isn't incredible, but the sound is and that's one reason I'll never stop going to the cinema for a movie I'm really hyped about. No matter how hard you try, it's virtually impossible to replicate a cinema sound system at home, especially for those who can't even afford an HDTV.

About 3D - I only choose to view a movie in 3D if it's a genre that 3D will improve, such as a space movie. I saw The Martian in 3D, but so little actually takes place in space it was a slight disappointment. However the floating-around-the-ship scenes were pretty effective. I'm still waiting for somewhere to re-screen Interstellar & Gravity in 3D, as I missed both of those. The day I get to finally go through the wormhole in IMAX 3D will be a very good day.
