You've probably got 2 sticks of the same size running in one channel and 2 sticks of another size running in a different channel. You can mix ram sizes in the one mother board, but you can't do the same in the one channel. I think! RAM kind of confuses me in situations like this so I could be wrong.

RAMChYLD
08-12-2010, 05:13 AM
Chewey: Both channels need to be the same size. So you need to mix them in a fashion that balances up both channels. i.e. assuming slot 1 and 2 are Channel A and slot 3 and 4 are Channel B, and you have two bars of 1GB and two bars of 2GB, you need to align it so that you have the 2GB bars in slot 1 and 3, and 1GB bars in slot 2 and 4. Nothing bad happens to the hardware if you don't do that, the worst that can happen to you is that the hardware takes a performance hit as many motherboards will drop to single channel mode if the channels isn't balanced. I believe you can also do things like have two 1GB bars in Channel A and a single 2GB bar in Channel B and it will still use dual channel mode: I've just successfully pulled off something similar on an ancient NForce2 motherboard, with two bars of 512MB on the two channel A slots and a single 1GB bar on the single Channel B slot since said mobo supports dual channel but only has 3 RAM slots. The important thing is that both channels has the exact same amount of memory. Having all the bars have the same speed and latency also helps a lot, since the motherboard will always take the speed and latency of the slowest RAM bar in the system.

What's important tho, is that all the RAM bars has the same voltage rating. If you mix 1.7v RAM bars with 1.6v ones, you're asking for trouble.

Latest purchase: Going to buy lunch now.

I think chewey is essentially right. Different sizes in different channels. A 32 bit PC with XP with SP2 only recognises up to around 3gig, so two sticks of 2gig will actually slow it down. If you google it you will find out why. I have one of 2gig and one of 1gig and it recognises them both. Maybe it's dependent on the capabilities of the motherboard and how it deals with SP2's use of the PAE mode, I don't know.

All I know is it works for me. :)

RAMChYLD
08-12-2010, 02:15 PM
I think it's basically down to how the chipset handles things. What I've experienced with NVidia chipets (which makes up about half of the PC count in my hacker cave) requires that both channels be balanced or the motherboard will boot in single channel mode.

Anyways, if you're going to use over 3GB of RAM, chances are you're going to want to use a x64 OS as well instead of a 32-bit one. I've been running x64 Windows since 2006, and I've seen 64-bit Windows development improve to the point where I'd now recommend it to folks who has a 64-bit CPU box. The extra 1% performance boost (and the fact that it doesn't slow down when there's more than 2GB of RAM present) counts to me.

X-Men: Legacy #238

I initially wasn't going to buy it, but then I found out Greg Land wasn't doing the art I decided for it.

The worst thing about Greg Land is that he's capable of doing good art. When he was on Nightwing back in the day his pages looked great. Obviously he just does this now because it's not a lot of effort and Marvel lets him get away with it.

He's actually not even the worst tracer in the business I've seen, just the most successful. There was something I saw pages from, maybe Warhammer comics? And the pages honestly looked like photos with lots of effects used to blur them. If I can figure out the source I'll link pages. In the mean time, join us in the comic thread, buster!

New version of the forum randomly double posts your posts sometimes.

My latest theory is it tends to do it when you are quoting.

Well, using the onscreen keyboard to make reply posts is difficult :P

Anyways, a remedy: Double posts apparently happens when the forum tells you that you've posted too quick and brings you to the post reply page, and you hit submit reply again from the page. If the forum takes you to the post reply page, hit back and refresh. Don't hit submit reply again.

The problem I have is it seems too sensitive and counts a click as a clickaty click.

I bought BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger for the PS3- mainly because it was on clearance for cheap and came with a free arcade stick (for Scott Pilgrim!).

Surprisingly, i'm loving the game - given that i've pretty much hated every other 2D fighter i've played, this is a huge accomplishment.

That said, I also got Tekken 6 for my 360 and a proper Hori Arcade Stick, and I like that much, much better.

There is a very good film based on it. I won't say what it is because if you've seen the film it may spoil your enjoyment of the book. After the reading do a quick google and you'll find out. :)

And I will look into the movie after I finish! I never like checking out films until after reading the books for them. Haha, I also never tend to take that easy route in my classes either. Nothing like a good book...

The second time you read Watchmen look at what is going on in the background of some of the panels. Particularily around the newsstand. :)

Related news: Alan Moore has given up comics. :(

Well, superhero comics. He says he may still use the medium but not for any of the other guys.

That's one of the things I love is when the background stuff is all fleshed out. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen also had a bunch of goings on that didn't pertain to any of the main narrative.

This will be my second time reading it! So, I will definitely be paying attention to detail a lot more this time around. That is why I'm so excited about it. I think it was a pretty cool choice for a British Fiction class - considering all the dryer readings he could have chosen from to make the class more serious, you know?

Sucks to hear Moore won't be doing anymore. Did he stop because they destroyed Watchmen by making an awful movie? I would be disheartened to see my work crumble to pieces also.

And TTT - Yeah, I am an English major, my focus is on British literature, haha. Also - loved the strip LOL

They have destroyed most of his works with awful movies. V for Vendetta - Watchmen - From Hell - The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

He said in the article that he was disillusioned with the whole business, the passion was gone from the head honchos and it was just about money now so he won't be giving them anything to facilitate that. He'll never again give us a Superman tale.

I remember looking forward to his work in 2000AD years ago, and he also said there may never be a conclusion to Halo Jones. :(
