A contender for one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It's competition: Requiem for A Dream

The music was nice though. In both cases.

Although I don't hate Requiem, it was derivative. For me, it was like I was on a weirdly calm roller-coaster that made me puke for no apparent reason whilst also wondering whether the whole point of the ride was to either vomit all over the place or to ponder about the calm waves of life below. The film did usher in some new ideas (regarding filmmaking) though. The drug scenes were iconic and everybody and their grandmas know Lux Aeterna. I have a love/hate relationship with Darren Aronofsky anyway, Noah sucked bad, but Black Swan and The Wrestler were better than okay. The Fountain was brilliant, derivative but the good kind.

I'm impressed they really were just 5 pounds and look quite good for being used.. Overall, a good purchase, Sulley, congratulations!

Let's just hope the american DVD isn't region blocked!

Indeed. A very good bargain. How did we live before Amazon? (Although I'm kinda disappointed that MoS didn't come with the cardboard slipcase that I imagine it came with originally. Maybe there's somewhere that sells second hand slipcases?!)

And there's no worry about it being blocked, as we have an all-region DVD player, and all laptops can be configured to whichever region is needed these days anyway. I have several US-only 2-Disc DVD sets in my collection (National Treasure 1+2, Pacific Rim, etc) and they've all played fine.

But I've seen Odissey and it's a unbeatable masterpiece.

Interestellar could as well be a stupid copy.

If you've seen Odyssey, why the heck haven't you seen Interstellar yet? You have no idea what it's like, so don't judge it till you've seen it. Interstellar is a modern masterpiece of epic proportions.

2001 is tightly woven with so many layers it takes a lot more than a single viewing to digest it's clever artistry.

Just what I said and you didn't go so defensive, lol.

I haven't seen Interstellar because; my father has seen it already and given his opinion about it, and what he told me I didn't like much. For starters it's a movie to think a lot. Sorry, I can't sit to enjoy that right now. I like to watch movies to understand and see a story, not to be given a 2 hour scientifical discurse. Also, not only I am NOT interested but also I don't have money to buy it, nor space to download it and I'm too lazy and it's too much work to download it when I'm not interested that much. No mind fucks for me

10 years ago back when Frank Miller's Sin City opened a friend of mine saw it in theaters. I never got the chance to. I bought it on DVD and he warned me not to cause it was "awful". And I ended up loving it. It's one of my favorite Robert Rodriguez films.

Point is, you can't go by other people's words and decide that's what the film is going to be. You need to see a film and decide for yourself what it is. Interstellar was the most mind-blowing film I saw in 2014. I wish I saw it more than once in theaters.

Alex_Chaplin

Alex Chaplin feels like this is pretty accurate.

However Alex Chaplin also feels one can't argue another's enjoyment of a piece of art but one can certainly argue the actual quality of the art.

Alex Chaplin has plenty of films that Alex Chaplin considers favorites but can't deny some of them are pretty crappy.

...

Alex Chaplin also enjoys opening cans of worms and dumping it other folk's laps for shits and giggles. :D

Funny how for whatever reason INTERSTELLAR is STILL on my cinema, but I don't wanna watch it because most likely I'll be watching it alone lol, even though I know anyone would say (even if I saw the movie) that the cinema is the best experience to watch the movie.

What my father didn't like about it it's a different thing to the idea I have of it. The main reason I don't watch it it's not because of what he said. I'm not saying I'll never watch it. I'm just not hurrying for it. I don't want a mindfuck movie. I like cinematic movies with a story. I'll watch it someday. Not now. But saying INTERSTELLAR is a true epic fucking masterpiece? I doubt it, though I'd rather keep my mouth quiet in that aspect until I legit see it. Comparing to Odissey is bad.

Interstellar is still in your local cinema?! By golly, if you don't go and see it right now, I'll... I'll... I don't know what I'd do, but I'd be very frustrated. If Interstellar was still in my local cinema, I'd be going to see it tonight. I deeply regret not having seen it on the big screen, and if it ever comes back for whatever reason I will go and see it and I will not let anyone or anything stop me.

And being alone in a theatre watching Interstellar would be a real treat. No noisy idiots to distract.

Interstellar may well be a mindfuck movie, but by no means does it not have a story. The whole point of the movie, the whole heart of the movie is the relationship between a parent and his child. That's why Chris Nolan gave Hans a piece of paper describing the simple heart of the story and nothing else. So that Hans' score would be solely based on the relationship in the story. Only when Hans had come up with the hauntingly beautiful main theme did Nolan then reveal that he was composing for an epic sci-fi space movie. By ALL accounts, from everything I've heard, Interstellar has about 200x the story 2001: A Space Odyssey does.

James P.Sullivan
05-29-2015, 10:33 PM
Yeah, but Interstellar is a bit creepy to watch in the cinema alone.

How would you know?! :p

---------- Post added at 03:33 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:29 PM ----------

It's not the first time I've watched a movie alone (I watched Shaun alone) but I wouldn't want to disturb the cinema to put a screening ONLY for me when it's not worth it, because the coast of the sala is too much and not worth it for a person.

I hope you don't need me to tell you that Shaun the Sheep: The Movie and Interstellar are two very different movies. If Shaun was creepy, well, that's one thing. Doesn't mean Interstellar is.

Anyway, cinemas show movies to whoever's there, even if that means it's playing to an empty theatre. So you buying a ticket to go see it wouldn't have been a problem...

DAKoftheOTA
05-30-2015, 02:14 AM
What do you have against going alone? I go to the movies alone all the time. Hell, the last 3 movies I saw I went by myself. But I go to afternoon matinees, not at night. That's a little too awkward.

Interstellar is very cinematic. And saying it doesn't have a story is like saying Robert DeNiro cannot act. It most certainly does have a story. I'm going to repeat myself from before: decide for yourself what the film is. Don't let your Dad's word keep you from seeing it any time soon. You're truly missing out.

The lack of a future Daft Punk soundtrack is the only downside to the shuttering of Tron 3. The first two were more style than substance.

Apparently, Tomorrowland's the failure to launch at the box-office drove Disney's decision to kill Tron 3. Tomorrowland cost about $180 million and probably won't even break even so it's a loss for the House of Mouse. Tron:Legacy cost $170 million - that doesn't include the cost of marketing so add another $20 - $30 million to its tab - and only made $400 million worldwide. The movie, in order to be a success, would have had to make $300 million in the States alone.

Since Tron had little chance of becoming a successful franchise, and that's the name of the game in Hollywood these days, it got de-rezzed.

End of line.

DAKoftheOTA
05-31-2015, 05:14 PM
It makes no sense that they're using the failure of Tomorrowland as an excuse to axe TRON 3. Tomorrowland is just a bad film that has no story and bad acting, even with Clooney in it. I was not invested in it at all, I almost fell asleep. The only reason I saw it is cause I wanted to see one of the Memorial Day films this year and it was more original than Poltergeist, the other Memorial Day opener.

I believe there's money to be made with a third TRON film. Maybe it will eventually happen in the future, just not 29 years from now like the last time.

Killgrave
05-31-2015, 06:24 PM
Oh, there's money to be made, just not in the mass quantities Disney wants. A third Tron would probably cost at least $200 million and as evident by the second film the fanbase is neither deep nor wide and that's a sequel killer. Why take a chance when a Frozen sequel or the next Marvel long underwear epic will make drug cartel dollars.

Tron: Legacy wasn't a critical darling either. It's not a film Disney can point to and say, "see, we make films of quality. Box office success isn't everything to us."

BTW, anyone who believes that, please stand on your head.

IMO, Damon Lindelof, one of Tomorrowland's screenwriters, has scorched earth all of the goodwill from his days on Lost. The screenplay is a mess and worse, it's boring. How did Disney, inventors and purveyors of the Princess trope, create such an annoying lead character in the person of Casey? Perhaps that's why she's not featured more prominently in the movie's marketing campaign. She's not even in the movie's poster.

Clooney is and yet he really doesn't show until much later and he's not really what you would call an endearing character. Clooney does charming well, but cranky, not so much. (If I want to watch a guy yell at the kids to get off his lawn, I'll watch John McCain on C-Span.) I agree with one reviewer who suggested Hugh Laurie should have played Clooney's inventor and Clooney taken on the part of the evil mayor. Clooney can do evil well, as show in Dusk to Dawn. But try selling that to Disney: "the guy who played perpetual misanthrope and drug user House is one of the film's heroes! And George doesn't show until the second hour!"

Cue the sound of crickets' chirping.

Bird and Lindelof wanted to counter the cynicism they see in current Hollywood films, but delivering a lecture on the virtues of optimism in the form of a two hour death-by-powerpoint screed is not the way to combat that cynicism. Most people don't like lectures, certainly don't want to pay for the displeasure of sitting through one and if you're going to dive into didacticism at least entertain your victims.

Hopefully the failure of Tomorrowland won't negatively effect Incredibles 2.

For starters, latest purchase: one Northskull bracelet to add to the collection and a 7" strip of 35mm film from a movie my father *erm* worked... on and I'm sentimentally attached to, in order to eventually work into my own four-wrap bracelet. Both fuckers cost me quite a bit, the film was tough to find and I'm diseased for bracelets. Whenever I can I make my own but Northskull has some of the best designs out there. Can't say I'm not annoyed that Mad Max is introducing everyone to the paracord bracelet, though I absolutely adore Hardy so I'm more enthused that we share a common trait - coincidentally, one of three celebrity actors I would consider activating my latent homosexuality for hahaha).

Now as for the rest...

Interstellar is a modern masterpiece of epic proportions.No.

Interstellar was the most mind-blowing film I saw in 2014.No. You want mindblowing, try Carruth's "Primer" if you haven't already. Not a space movie (time-travel) and while definitely a favourite of mine, an objective masterpiece even if one doesn't consider the meager budget on which it was realized.

Interstellar is quite fine and I thoroughly enjoy it but it's pretty much what you see is what you get.Yes.

Considering Kip Thorne contributed to the script, Interstellar wasn't a mindfuck at all; though, then again, his contributions were only to keep the movie scientifically sound. As far as experiences can go, sound mixing aside, Interstellar was very enjoyable and thought-provoking (at the expense of character depth - as is now near-idiosyncratic for Nolan & Co.) and it pays homage to both Solaris and 2001 as every space movie aspiring to enter that pantheon must, but unless one broadens the definition of "mindfuck" to include "not readily known scientific terminology" then it was one of the most straightforward and dare I say predictable movies I have ever seen. To be honest, I don't even recall any particular trouble following the physics of the movie - excluding those scant "blackboard" moments. The fact that Michael Caine's character, a scientist, spends more time repeating from memory Thomas' "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night" (which is also horrifically misinterpreted) than he does giving expository scientific dialogue is quite indicative of how Nolan decided to forego some of the higher-minded aspirations for a more raw form of emotion than he's used to trying to capture.
The scenes of: the climax to "Detach", a stranded Brand looking over Edmunds' wreckage, the void in her eyes as she realizes nothing can be saved from it and she is truly alone and, a "suddenly" decades-aged Romilly were, in my opinion, the high points of the movie in terms of storytelling and impactful filmmaking; so devastatingly beautiful.
Generally, the result wasn't bad though not particularly exceptional - to pluck one example from the myriad, the dialogue becomes really trite as the movie draws to a close due to evident fatigue. Is it a masterpiece? Nowhere near it. Does it belong in the above mentioned pantheon of exceptional space movies? Hardly. That said, I really enjoyed it and wished they hadn't been silly and nominated Anne Hathaway for Best Supporting Actress which would've given her a far better shot at making the short list; a truly stand-out performance for her which could've easily displaced either one of Laura Dern or Keira Knightley.

Perhaps that's why she's not featured more prominently in the movie's marketing campaign. She's not even in the movie's poster.
That has less to do with the inertia of Casey's character, more with Disney's box-office concerns or Clooney and his agent's megalomania. Similar campaigns have been run purely out of concern of marketability, which can make or break a movie (see Dredd). For ex. 12 Years a Slave's marketing in Italy had posters mislead viewers to think Fassbender or Pitt were leads by having their faces prominently stand out, them being the more internationally recognized and hailed celebrities (compared to Ejiofor).

Alex Chaplin feels like this is one of Alex Chaplin's favorite movies of last year. Alex Chaplin's 2nd favorite in fact.
I would argue it's, after "Birdman", the best dark comedy to have been released since 2008's "In Bruges" and "Burn After Reading" (ranked in that order).

Honest question: do you guys actually buy DVDs or BluRays any longer? With the advent of torrents, that is. I understand the practice with CDs to "support the artists" (though I believe that's only true for indie musicians; outside of those artistic souls, the music industry is the most rotten thing I have ever come to know hence the numerous high-storage drives containing several lifetimes' worth of downloaded AV content and would-be jail time).

In Bruges was amazing. Martin McDonagh was the only reason I saw Seven Psychopaths. Fun fact, his brother John Michael McDonagh made The Guard and also did Calvary both of which were also very good.

I love the Coen Brothers and most (that is, all except two or three) of their work but like The Ladykillers remake they did, I failed to 'get' Burn After Reading. It fell flat.

I don't buy DVDs anymore, the loss in quality over web-streaming services or HD On Demand stuff is simply not worth it. I do cherish Blu-ray Steelbooks. They usually have excellent packaging. Downloading over the 'net takes some time, only full rips or 'remux' versions are worth it but I've had more than a couple backup HDDs suddenly fail on me causing data loss in the terabytes so discs are, at least for some movies, the safer option for me. Plus, there's all kinds of disc extras that are on the disc but hard to find on the 'net.

Oh and I agree, Interstellar was great, a shining example really, but not a masterpiece.

I can see that happening. I thought it was good but didn't love it the first time around, and it took a second viewing to cherish its wit as much as I do now.

Yup, my numerous backups (talking double digits here and none of that SSD bullcrap) all contain the. exact. same. content. Backing up is such a nuisance really. It was only after losing my life's work several times that I decided to unleash the paranoia and see where it took me.

I have a dream today!
I have a dream that one day, this world will rise up against SSD manufacturers and demand a reliable cost-effective solution that won't abandon their client with 50% chance from moment to the next and live out the true meaning of their creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men deserve good SSDs."
I have a dream that one day on the techno-coloured hills of Silicon Valley, the sons of former CEOs and the sons of former CEO owners (??) will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherho- I tried. I tried and failed.

Alex Chaplin feels like saying "this guy. This guy knows".

Alex Chaplin feels Shane Carruth's follow-up, Upstream Color, while not as good as Primer, is still an engaging watch.

Honest question: do you guys actually buy DVDs or BluRays any longer?

Alex Chaplin buys blu-rays (and DVDs when there isn't a blu-ray release) on a weekly basis.

Alex Chaplin likes the way his collection looks on a shelf.
When Alex Chaplin is alone, Alex Chaplin likes staring at his collection in the dark, through the light coming through his front room window and giggling himself to sleep.

Although Alex Chaplin feels some of their more recent script-only films are pretty lacklustre (Unbroken & Gambit).

The apple is only there for a size reference. They didn't throw it in the order as a freebie. Ahhh....IKEA. My floors are real. Was not cheap :/

Framing is the BEST possible way to protect them. Everything I have hanging up right now is in frames. Especially my $80 Mondo Pulp Fiction poster. Most expensive poster I've ever bought. Because if you don't frame them, over time gravity will cause them to become saggy and then the pinholes expand and eventually destroy the poster. All my frames are cheap cheap cheap. I don't know about where you are, but I buy mine at AC Moore. Cheapy plastic frames. I'm not about the look of the framing, I'm about the look of the poster when it's protected and nothing can happen to it behind that plexiglass that's keeping it safe. And if AC Moore doesn't have anything, Wal*Mart does. Cheap. Not as cheap as AC Moore, but still cheap. Don't buy a glass frame. I use plastic. Glass is heavier and more expensive. I swear by the frames I've bought. None of them have failed me yet. Hell, my Daft Punk TRON: Legacy poster has been in the frame for over 4 years now. Still looks brand new. I didn't even remove it when I moved last summer. Just took that sucker off the wall, put it in the back seat of my car and hung it at the new place :)

Here's all my posters in their frames:

Ok, so with the exception of the 2 FYC Legacy ads next to Daft Punk, everything else is plastic. Oh, and The Dark Knight and KIϟϟ framed posters came like that. Got them from AC Moore, actually. Framed and ready to be hung. Aside from those 4 - all the big, more important ones are in plastic. And they're doing just fine ;)

Yeah. Cheap flooring. Can't afford anything else. :/

I totally agree with you that framing is the best option, and that it doesn't matter what frames you get, as long as they're frames, no matter how cheap. My problem however, is that all three cinema quad posters I've bought are the same size - 40" x 27". That is just a couple cm too large to fit the standard largest frame here in Monstropolis. I've looked everywhere, but the largest standard size frame is just that little bit too small. And I'm not about to go trimming the posters to make them fit. I've looked into made-to-order frames, but the cheapest I've come across is 50. So that makes each poster I purchase roughly 65 instead of 6.50.

What's the standard size movie quad poster in NY?

Hmm....that's the exact size of my Legacy poster, which is the full theatre-sized poster. Interesting that over there they don't accomodate the frames for the posters. And those are UK posters, since I see the word "cinema". It's not like they're American-sized and that's why the frames are too large. Have you actually been to the store and measured them? The posters may just make it inside there. Never know until you try.

Yep, they're full-size cinema quad posters. And believe me, I've measured them countless times and the largest standard frame is 10cm too small.

Damn, that really suck. I'm sorry about that. Is it 10cm total, 5 on the top and 5 on the bottom? And have you looked EVERYWHERE? Even online? I don't mean order online, I mean check the websotes of your local stores and see if there's a site-to-store option. Other than that, I don't know what to tell you :(

Wow, nice Spirit poster. Is that 27x40 as well? Black is the only way to go there. It would be nice contrast. Not that the frames aren't Black to begin with :p

No, I've just measured it - it's 30x40", probably because it's landscape. The width (40") is 10cm too large for the standard frame. So I'm guessing the height is too big too.

I've looked on Amazon, IKEA, and specialist poster sites with no luck. I've also phoned a couple local shops but they were charging 50+. I've gone into a store to ask, and also a personal business set up in a market stall, but again, the cheapest custom-made frame was 50.

---------- Post added at 05:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:29 PM ----------

I've just had a look again online. I've found a couple of snap frames going for ~40. But that's still a huge amount of money. Surely there's SOMETHING out there for less?

The three footed James P.Sullivan. You needed just one more and that CD player could stay on its shelf undisturbed.

Regarding posters, I have a couple and I've done something different. Instead of conventional frames, I had them box mounted. This way it would protrude a little from the wall but it'd have none of the bordering frame lines and all of the protection. I don't know about longevity but they look great, even after a couple of years. I've had crazy amounts of dust, debris and humidity around on multiple occasions and usually just one cloth wipe and it's good as new.

Ah, the ever-observant Helix. You should know I have two feet. Even though they're not in my avatar, you can see on my new poster. And in my two movies. I have many friends and co-workers with odd numbers of limbs, but not me. The reason I used that CD player was because the pair of black shoes are still tied together. I only got them recently and haven't bothered taking the label off or separating them yet.

I'm out of town for work ATM so can't do pics but basically this is how they are. Quite similar to an art canvas actually.

Imagine matt/gloss laminate over the print for protection. It's very light so falling risks are almost negligent provided its hooked up right.
I've been thinking about doing something involving back-lit posters but I've been putting it off until the paint job for the walls gets done.

I've also been meaning to try this (http://ex-scapes.com/2012/08/08/framing-large-obscure-posters/) but instead of matboard I was thinking foamcore (easier to cut) with some fabric over it as a border.

Another alternative I haven't tried (but prolly will) is block (or a thinner version called 'plaque') mounting, which is basically the print attached to a solid slab of MDF (I prefer PVC and it's long-lasting properties and water resistance) or wood.

I should prolly mention I have the DIY bug.

I love The Gunslinger books. I'm a Stephen King fan and have been since I picked up his first collection of short stories. Think the Man With No Name meets Lord of the Rings and you'll get an idea of the span and breadth of these books. I got several of my friends, who hate horror and would never read King, hooked on these books.

PS. My latest purchase: a beautiful foil poster of Iron Man courtesy of Grey Matters Art. Why does the best movie poster art come from third party vendors? Most of the studio approved ones are either photo-shopped collages that I could put together - and believe me I have zero artistic ability - or suffer from "giant-floating-actor-head" syndrome.

I wish I could buy Grant Gustin The Flash on Blu-ray right now as well as Arrow Season 3...why do they wait till September to release them? Makes no sense, I feel like people would lose interest by then..

Since the new seasons of The Flash & Arrow resume in October, releasing them in September on disc serves to promote the upcoming seasons. It's a balancing act, release them right after the season finales and people might not be missing the shows yet. Release them in October and the previous seasons compete with the new seasons.

I also think that Hollywood still hasn't fully embraced just how much the viewing habits of people have changed. Netflix got ahead of that curve by releasing a show's entire season in one chunk. If it didn't create "binge watching," it certainly enabled the habit. There's also Hulu, VOD, and DVRs so people can watch whenever their schedule allows. But Hollywood still seems to regard summer as a time when people stop watching TV and are all on vacation. Slowly you're seeing networks offering a summer season of new shows but its taken a long time and the big three have only dipped a few toes in the water.

Perhaps the networks will one day regard summer in the same way as fall and spring.

Is that Bourne Identity a Complete Score, too, or a FYC?
I don't know what it is, they included it in my package. It's the same as the retail soundtrack, though.

I have that disc in M4A, I think someone here uploaded it (might be hack3rman)

I do have a M4a rip but I don't remember if I uploaded it here or not...

My next purchase will be The Legacy Collection: Cinderella. Won't be getting it when it comes out tomorrow, but I should get it soon.

Mine does, too :)

He must've bought the 13" one with no external drive. Idk why anyone would want a laotop with no drive. It limits you - severely. My brother almost got one of those but I'm glad I was there with him to tell him no.

Yep, I did. A mid-2010 Pro for less than half the RRP. Great condition, has served me well thus far (the last 16 months or so).

I also don't understand why anyone would go for one without a drive either. My sister has a fairly new Air, which IS nice, but no drive...

Well sorry, it's 15" and has 512 GB of flash storage; and is an extremely fast computer. Early 2014 edition. I don't see the problem, anyways, I got an external so I can also rip Blu-Rays :)

I'll probably ask Sparktank, he seems to know a whole lot. No offense, thank you though :)

Err... Didn't Sparky 'take a break' from the Shrine? He hasn't been around in ages. And Skelly knows a whole lot about ripping too. Seriously, I know he does.

That's good. Maybe one day you can persuade him to return...?!
