It was a nice surprise to hear 'The War Room', 'We Are The Doctors' and 'Rescue The Doctor' from Day Of The Doctor actually be used in an episode. The new music was actually quite good too. Well I Read That Series 9 Is Being Released In 2 Parts, Becuase Of The Christmas Special...

S9 Part 1 is out now for Christmas. The series concludes too close to Christmas to have a decent boxset release ready so we're only getting Part 1 for now (Doctor Who DVDs and Blu-Rays sell very well towards Christmas which is why boxsets are always released November/December time). BBC have confirmed S9 Part 2 will be out in January along with the complete Series 9 Boxset. I'm guessing this year's Christmas special will either be on both releases or on the boxset and receive a standalone release since we have no idea when Series 10 will air making it pretty difficult to delay it's inclusion on a boxset. Christmas Specials are usually on the boxset of the following series but since we have no idea if Series 10 will even air in 2016 and the complete boxset is out in January (when Christmas specials usually receive standalone releases) so I imagine it's going to be on the Series 9 boxset.

But either way, I'm skipping the Series 9 Part 1 release and I'm going to get the complete boxset. I'd rather wait two months and get the boxset with all the special features than buy the quick standalone release. I've been downloading the episodes in HD anyway so they can be used to fill the urge to rewatch before the boxset releases.

There was actually ''''''music'''''''''' in it, there were a lot of atonal ampient pads and atmospheric semi-tonal stock sound effects, a heartbeat loop, and at least one point where there was some sort of ARP synth playing a rhythmic modulated bassline pattern that was clearly meant to be subtle but I thought was actually rather jarring. I wonder if it was all stock sound or if they got Murray to fuck around with a modular synth of some kind for a bit.

If Murray did indeed write music for this episode, I can see Sleep No More having one track devoted to it. I can't see it having more than one. Plus it then allows room for Disc 2 of the soundtrack (assuming it's three discs like Series 8) to have lots more music from Heaven Sent/Hell Bent which I imagine will have the biggest scores of the series ESPECIALLY thanks to the synopsis for Hell Bent.

I suppose the soundtrack will come out around May again, but I wish it would come out sooner like Game of Thrones (it comes out BEFORE the finale) and obviously film soundtracks come out before or shortly after the film releases. Here's hoping for a February release. Also will be interesting to see if the Christmas episode is included again.

Anybody noticed that Ben Foster hasn't orchestrated or conducted for any episodes of Series 9?

There are lots of fan-created covers going round that claim he did, but in fact that task has been done by Alastair King.

I think it really, really shows. Series 9 has the blandest score yet. :(

Series 9 has the blandest score yet. :(

I dunno, personally it's been my favourite year of Murray Gold content pretty much ever. Synths are back, the orchestra's not blaring every fucking second, there are very dramatically effective bits, and there are bits that greatly benefit from not being heavily over-scored (Capaldi's speech in the second ep of the Zygon two-parter comes to mind)
I will agree that Clara's death was really poorly scored though, bland strings doing their thing, nothing new there, took me right out of the scene tbh, felt like a bad Hollywood imitation

What "original" music there was in Heaven Sent bored me to tears.

It's very telling that my favourite episode this year so far is Sleep No More, which is 99% unscored.

...the orchestra's not blaring every fucking second

They never had enough money for the orchestra to be blaring every second. Previously, I suspect the thinking went along the lines that they had an orchestra for a limited amount of time so they may as well use it - which is precisely what they haven't been doing this series. The scores of New Who have thus far been defined by their forthrightness, their refusal to hide in the background - and now you suddenly have an 80 piece orchestra playing bland underscore instead of the dramatic showpieces of yesterday.

There's nothing outright offensive in the new stuff - except Clara's exit; possibly the most outrageous, unnecessary, and immature piece of scoring of the 21st century... If ever a scene in Doctor Who had so much plot buildup, atmospheric maturity and character-driven emotion that it should've played with NO MUSIC - and would've been a thousand times better off for it - it was this one.

Aside from that, it's professional and slick, but nothing more than fairly big budget television underscore. Where is series 9's Lithuania, Vale Decem, Papal Mainframe, The Blush Of LoveMissy and Her Boys, Hologram, Rose Defeats The Daleks, The Carrionites Swarm, Battle In The Sky, The Life And Death Of Amy Pond, My Tardis, etc? The theatrically orchestrated, richly thematic, larger than life cues that didn't hide behind ostinato.

Sooner or later, everything croaks. Maybe Murray needs a break for a little while... He seemed kind of stressed last I recall during an interview. Shitton of tracks to work on, rewatching scenes over and over, deciding which scene needs what, realizing the track is completely wrong after, rewriting everything, etc. Maybe a fresh someone could give it a go for a while, or work with Murray to bring a new life into the scores.

It's all about dif strokes I guess - orchestra blaring is my favourite part. Songs with vocals (that then don't end up on the albums...) are my fave too. This year's overall score has been "good" but not one I wanna re-hear many times due to the lack of orchestra... and the songs I do like the most are remakes of songs like "forgetting" (played in Woman Who Lived when Ashildr and the Doctor are talking at the end) and "this time there are three of us" from Heaven Sent.

Worst episode of the series. VERY much a let down. Definitely the worst of the Twelfth Doctor's run. (The point of which Clara was retrieved REALLY ruined the whole episode and after the ending I have just lost all respect for Moffat. I had thought he was getting better with series 8&9 but I guess it's just Capaldi having been so great in the role instead.) It was also just far too long. Christmas special doesn't look any better.

James (The Disney Guy)
12-05-2015, 10:19 PM
it was set up to be a really good episode. Returning to gallifrey. The stand off. Then bam. Return of clara. She is/was the most annoy companion ever. The whole plot of the doctor losing his memory... why? Just so they can let her off free with a tardis.. pointless.

The christmas special looks to be a bit of a laugh, but do we really need river back again?

I have little faith for the future of the series if it goes on like this. :(

gwylock1
12-05-2015, 10:28 PM
I wouldn't go so far as to call it the 'worst' ever. It was okay. There were good bits. Like that retro TARDIS. Most beautiful thing I've ever laid eyes on. It's main flaw was that there was a lot of missed potential. All that nonsense with the barn? Unnecessary, could have popped right up to the capitol and not had some nonsense about soup and drawing lines in the sand. The Sisterhood of Karn? Why were they there? How did Gallifrey get un-frozen? Lots of flashy stuff and not enough answers. Also Rassilon ...?????? Suddenly not a threat????? I honestly think all that would have been so much better as a separate story, leading into the sentimental stuff with Clara as the Christmas special or something.

I finally got my tape of Corridor of Eternity and discovered two unpleasant things:

1) The music represented comes from the master tapes and doesn't represent the broadcast version used in the isolated scores.
2) There are more tracks for Castrovalva than stated in the liner notes (12 listed).

I wanted to simply use the isolated score tracks in place of the cassette tracks, because they would be of better quality; but it seems that I would have to edit the tracks to match the cassette. Not sure I'm up for that!

It seems I was wrong. "Corridor of Eternity" has a track that sounds like the mixed isolate score track "Castrovalva" but is different. Turns out there is another track on the unmixed version of the isolated score that matches it.

There is another track from Corridor, 4M1, that has the same music as "Recursive Occlusion" on the isolated score, but is shorter than it. And the track 3M7 is "Tapestry" but is used in different places at different lengths.

And I discovered that I do have a CD of it which is of better quality than the tape (though it must've been made from a tape originally.) I will upload that soon.

Hello everyone. I have a question about audio compression and loudness.

I managed to get an official sample of an unreleased track used in Doctor Who, although it was mastered for broadcast and not for release.
Here's a screengrab of the sample:

As you might notice, it's DR is heavily limited, as the peaks only pop up when it loops over itself. There's really no advantage of mastering it this way, is there? This track is prepared for broadcast, but other tracks aren't like this when played in the show. The stereo width is extremely slim and most of the instruments lie in the center. Is this intentional, or just lazy mastering? There's also no surround track included with the sample, as this is a stem.
I understand that this would be optimal for maximizing loudness, but the DR really does suffer. Nothing is above -10 LUFS.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

An unreleased Murray Gold track (if so, how and where!? If you'd rather not say, I understand) or some kind of library/stock track? Either way, could you post it without any editing, to see if anyone here could help with getting a better result or some enjoyment out of it? I don't post direct links anymore but this sample can be found on my website. Anyways, a version of this sample is included in a soundtrack release of Doctor Who. It's not really anything too special. I'm working on getting a sample list for this specific track to make it easier to follow which samples are built off which.

I agree. It's my favorite finale since the relaunch. The big spectacle endings were starting to feel tedious and anti-climatic. Nice to have something character based, and in which music played such a key role. And it was great how they turned what happened to Donna on its head and the Doctor got a taste of his own medicine from the companion who had become most like him.

WELL... I really, REALLY liked that. REALLY REALLY liked that. As far as the music goes, though I have been somewhat less than thrilled by the scores from this series of Doctor Who, and though I remain cool on some (not all) of The Husbands Of River Song... some parts of it edge in to become some of my favourite Murray Gold moments of all time.

The finale cue is IRRESISTIBLE. I'm not going to spoil, but it was a deliciously old fashioned theatrical scene - the closest Doctor Who has ever got to pure Fairy Tale... Perhaps some of the finest character moments in New Who so far, and a proper closure - a real, big, fat, definitive THE END just like they don't make any more... and the score finishes off with a proper flourish - rolling timpani, and major key brass that doesn't hide or compromise the scene in the way that the score completely ruined a certain pivotal moment of "Face The Raven"... it elevates it.

So, so happy with this episode. :)

And was it just me who laughed at the deliberately awkward transition from the "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" to growling brassy threat when we see The Doctor's less-than-friendly sign on the front of the TARDIS?

Greetings again!

I'm happy to announce my next studio tracklist release myself. This one is very special, as it's taken weeks to get the phase in tune with the sound effects...
Series 3, Episode 7: 42! You're going to want to listen to this one. Trust me. Like, really trust me. Should be up within the week.

Would you be able to create a cover featuring Corwin with his visor down (the episode's "monster")? I feel that would be a much better image to represent the episode.

Just hasn't been released yet, as CGCJ said it's on the 50th anniversary collection, good 11 minutes of it, the DVD photo gallery of this story contains music too, unused in the suite, although some are overlayed by special sound. You can find the photo gallery on the massive index page that's been set up on this forum.

Searching through the BBC Archives I found the exact 'bird' sound effect used in a lot of Doctor Who episodes, mainly 'Amy's Choice'. This was taken from 'BBC Sound Effects Library - Disc 47, Track 24'. Link. (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B19n4KSR2W7UaU54VkctWjlSaEE/view?usp=sharing)

Edit:
Upon further examination, the track used in Amy's Choice is slowed down or sped up accordingly to fit with the timing of the episode. It'll be hard to remove the bird sound effect from any music, as the exact pitch differences would be hell to figure out.

Edit 2:
After even further examination, it seems like a 94-94.5% slowdown (from 100%). Here's the proper, aligned track taken directly from 'Amy's Choice'. (https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B19n4KSR2W7UaU5Yd3ZzblZhLVU/view?usp=sharing)

Does anyone own the Series 1-7 Bluray PAL (29.9 FPS) 5.1 boxset?

If it helps... the US Blurays of s5-9 are all slowed down. All the Blurays worldwide of s1-4 are slowed down. There is no 50i Bluray version of The Specials, they're all tampered with in various ways.

Commercial releases of new series Doctor Who with correct speed/frame rates:
s1-4 - Region 2/4 DVDs only
Specials - Region 2/4 DVDs only
s5-9 - Region 2/4 DVDs and UK/European/Australian Blurays only

The exception here is The Day Of The Doctor, where the only correct speed Bluray is the mail-order-only replacement disc 2 from the limited edition 50th Anniversary box set. All others run slow. UK and PAL region DVDs are fine.

P.S. Also to say that pitch correction is applied on the slowed-down NTSC-ised releases as well so it's impossible to reverse with a 96% resample correction.

Yeah, there's the Earth HQ background sound effect (which I nicked for my Ambassadors upload) and a chunk of Mira background too. But still no Kembel jungle, which I badly need.

EDIT

Ohh! There is a burst of what appears to be the Kembel jungle in the Give a Show Projector sequence though! Happy now.

Apollo, The Astronauts, Blake's 7 and Dr Who are from CD; the rest are vinyl-sourced. Side two is from a better condition copy than side one, due to reasons. The Sky at Night I've pulled from the source Decca album as it was again in slightly better nick.

I've also included the original version of Journey to the Sorcerer - also from CD - as it's sort of contemporary and fits nicely on the end.

If you want the proper versions of the Quatermass theme, get yourself over to my Quatermass threads (Thread 191161').

This version of "The Sadist" is from the vinyl - the one in my Quatermass and the Pit download (Thread 193510) was from the A For Andromeda photo gallery so will probably sound cleaner. "Patrick Michael & his Orchestra" I strongly suspect to be a pseudonym.

And is that a massive, obvious edit at 1'06 into Journey Into Space? Never noticed that before.

Nano Munchies (From 'Prisoner of the Judoon')
St Jude's Hospital (From 'The Vault of Secrets')
Opening the Vault (From 'The Vault of Secrets')
The Groske (From 'Death of the Doctor')
Rani Runs around and Says Hello a Lot (From 'The Empty Planet')
Back to HQ (From 'The Empty Planet')
Nazi Polka (From 'Lost in Time')
It's my Duty for King and Country (From 'Lost in Time')

Once I've figured out what these are, I'll update the (Un)official Soundtrack with rips of these.

I've heard about this rescore and its got me really interested to see the result. I've seen people rescore a scene or a sequence but to rescore an entire episode must be quite a challenge based on what music is available. You can use my tracks sure. Will be interesting to see how well they fit in scenes.

I certainly hope that Murray doesn't go, unless Chris wants to bring in Olafur Arnalds from Broadchurch, because his music is just amazing and he is probably my favourite composer.

I've heard about this rescore and its got me really interested to see the result. I've seen people rescore a scene or a sequence but to rescore an entire episode must be quite a challenge based on what music is available. You can use my tracks sure. Will be interesting to see how well they fit in scenes.

Thank you! Yes, getting the music and sound effects to fit right is a pain... Also the fact that I have to edit/remaster the center track of clicks and pops in the first case is a bewilderment.

Edit: Your album is up on the site! (gav-odonnell.com/posts/00007.html)

Having a nice day, coffee in hand, just got done uploading the rest of gav-odonnell.com.
*sips coffee*
Looks at the bottom of a page at gav.com.
Realizes that I have to change the 'Copyright 2015' to '2016' on all of the HTML files.
*finishes coffee in one big gulp*

Honestly though, I think it'll be good to have a new showrunner. It has been getting quite stale recently.

Yeah it really is a pain. I wanted to ask, whats the Eleventh Doctors Theme Sample list about? Have you managed to isolate the individual instruments to an extent? That would be really interesting to hear.

Also any of my new edits on unreleased music from episodes I do are welcome to go on your site if you like.

Yes, I have been able to isolate some instruments and assemble them to their in-mastered state. It's a gamble though, it seems to work better with some tracks than others. I've only gone through and analyzed 'I Am The Doctor' so far. I've managed to get the percussion, chorus, some strings and brass but not all is salvageable.

However it is very hard to compile and list so that is the main reason I haven't released it. It's all sorted differently by when I process it, not when it's used in the show. It's just about 100 folders with 4C19B or some combination of letters and numbers. Then, from there, you have you main cues, alternate cues, and your stems. Some cues I have in 5.1 which really is a pain to organize.

It's all wumbly-jumbly for now. I'll see what I can do.

Edit:
I'm currently working on sorting things out. I've managed to manipulate the opening/closing themes to exclude/isolate the various instruments or synths. Very interesting to hear, indeed. It's destructive and messy but still fun to do. Hearing the 2010 theme with no lead synth is amazing. With a couple more weeks, I could completely disassemble the theme, leaving each instrument isolated.

Can't wait to hear different versions of the 2010 theme. Reminds me of the sound area of the Doctor Who Experience. Theu had 3 headphones and each one played a different isolated element of the 2010 theme.

If I remember correctly

Left headphone played bassline only (it had more of a punch to it than the actual XI version)
Middle headphone played bassline & synth only.
Right headphone played orchestra and synth only.

Shame they never leaked or were released anywhere. They sounded amazing and if anything made me appreciate the 2010 theme as I know many fans didnt like it.

I'm actually very close to obtaining these results. I've managed to completely do the synth and most of the baseline. However the baseline would be done good justice if it were recreated instead of isolating some of the low frequencies. The orchestral section is the hardest to do, as they are present from 100Hz to 9kHz, and are followed up by lots of reverb and 'wibbly' bits in. I'm not sure if the orchestral part would ever sound good just by simple isolation.

When you do complete this, please do post your results! I had some success ages back trying to do much the same thing, but I'm afraid I gave up after a day or two due to simply getting tired of poking at it :P

Will do! I can absolutely understand getting tired of poking at frequency charts all day, especially if doing it by hand. It's a necessary evil.

The Sarah Jane Adventures (Un)official soundtrack (https://mega.nz/#!eVdSQKxQ!Ix21wDKtmc-JlYV44Qw5Ou9yw7Nv58QNaijoUxKvFVw). This update includes rips of the newly discovered missing tracks, 'Alien Ingredient' was discovered to loop so has been edited to as heard in the episode, the unidentified series 2 track has been discovered to be an unused cue from Secrets of the Stars and has been placed after the other tracks from the story. Also includes custom covers by Mr Gold. This is likely the final version unless I find some of the missing tracks or more are released, which is unlikely as both Sam and Dan Watts have said that they don't have the rights to release more and there are no plans for an official soundtrack release.

Wow, that's awesome! Thank you so much!
How long did it take you to recreate it?

Could you also do Cassandra's Death (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81mJnrNP-Ms) please?
There are also these tracks which I would to hear clean versions of... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-y1IZQ4Q0E, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD5ss8tWayo
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TD5ss8tWayo) and https://youtu.be/tWiGCJybzw4?t=3m1s
(If I could just make one criticism: I think there's just a little bit too much echo in your recreations... But they're still great!)

Sorry if that's too much to ask for x)
