I'm downloading it currently! Flatline was AMAZING though. a brilliant story, clever writing, impressive CGI for the 3D Creatures (highlight for Spoiler). Music was outstanding. Series 8 has been a breath of fresh air. It feels new and on top form once again.

Another spanking episode....:D
I'm loving all of the new variations of the Doctor's theme in Flatline (A lot more than I ever liked the actual episode itself, I just don't like Clara)
Amanda

Clara wants things from this Doctor she is just not going to get. She ran all over Matt's Doc (as did Amy & River), but new Doc is not interested in that. And his feelings towards her adventure at the end are very telling I think. 3 episodes left to go for the season......

The thing about Capaldi's doctor is that he doesn't care when people die. He just moves on without a second glance and seeing as the finale is about death and where you go when you die, I feel we will see the doctor's arrogance towards people dying come to a shocking climax.
I feel like Clara's attempts to be like the Doctor are ultimately going to kill her and send her to the promised land. This series has got darker and darker and its brilliant. It's a tone of the show they have been avoiding since Series 5 when it was all fairytales and light hearted adventures. We need a series where its gone dark and scary because then you see the reality of travelling with the doctor and the danger that follows, and Series 8 has definitely been that.

chris....remember spoilers though.
I do not think the doc does not care.
In this episode when Clara was stressing on how to save therm all, the Doctor told her welcome to his world. He cares. About every one of then, but usually has not been able to afford the time to give even a passing last word. He saves as many as he can and hopes that's good enough. And he opined at the end of this one that perhaps some of the wrong people survived. All Doctors have had to make these choices. How many Unit soldiers alone offed it? It happens around the Doc. TARDIS travel is the least safe thing around, yet next week it appears there shall be Danny, Clara and a buncha young 'uns on a field trip. I wanna know how the hell that happens. And also note that as Clara claimed to be a good Doctor, he admits it but says that does not come from good. This Doctor very much believes he is not a "good" man for some reason....

Has anyone else been noticing some interesting parallels appearing? For one thing the appearance of "Heaven" could somehow tie in to the Doctor looking like John Frobisher (not to be confused with the penguin) and the mysterious appearance of the "Curator" being a verison of the Doctor that resembles someone else *cough*
Also did anyone else notice the Doctor Who promo poster on the bus in the Next Time trailer? Remembrance of the Daleks much? Could it tie in with the parallel drawn between Robin Hood and the Doctor? (ie that they were real people who spawned great legends)

It's not that he doesn't care; he just recognises that sometimes it happens and you can't do anything about it. Cold-hearted though it may seem, you can glean useful information from those who died in order to save the rest - the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. While you're moping around worrying about the person who just died, a hundred more people could join them. He said as much in Mummy On The Orient Express. Clara implies that he's heartless, and he almost agrees with her - but then he reveals that he's not heartless, he's merely logical: "Sometimes the only choices you have are bad ones, but you still have to choose." - it's an acknowledgement that in rough situations not everybody wins and not everybody survives. He seems positively incredulous at Fenton's lack of respect for human life. Clara is beginning to understand that - she knows that to be the Doctor, you have to lie, and you have to lead. I do think that Clara is taking rather too easily to this way of life... and the Doctor is clearly not liking it and is beginning to regret what's happening to her.
He didn't refuse to acknowledge Clara's successful stint as the Doctor out of malice or jealousy... it was because he witnessed Clara doing it "his way" and he didn't like what he saw. When Clara pesters him for recognition, he tells her to call Danny Pink - he's afraid that she's becoming too much like him, and he tries to encourage her out of "Doctor mode" by getting her to re-engage with her life. Clara persists, and eventually she hits a nerve - "I was the Doctor, and I was good!" - forcing the Doctor to face the truth that whilst his methods achieve good, he doesn't feel that he is inherently good himself. In his previous companions, he's had "hyper-human" humans who persistently act as his conscience... but in Clara he's found somebody for whom it all seems a bit too easy. This side of Clara's personality has really only appeared during her travels with Capaldi's Doctor. They are a toxic combination.
This is why I am really, REALLY loving this series and particularly Capaldi's Doctor. There is genuine character development and genuine character interaction - we see Clara's interactions with Capaldi's Doctor making her cocky.
Aaaaaaanyway, enough of that.

Superb post and great explanation! I agree that the depth to this series could make it the best yet. I'm not convinced it's the most entertaining overall, but I keep an open mind until the Blu-ray box set comes out and I will watch them again.

yes the Doctor sees a much bigger picture than his human companions and that may come off as uncaring but you have to understand the Doctor and now I think Clara does , if you or others have to die for the bigger good then you die that seems harsh but that's the Doctor and Capaldi has done it brilliantly Ive been loving this season :)
and how many times did River say the Doctor lies during Matts seasons :)

TARDIS Pan from the TARDIS Adventure Game is from silence in the library and I have that in higher quality ripped from the episode.

Thanks Chris. I'm just (slowly) trying to sort out the Adventure Games music to what is unreleased music and which episodes they're from. (I know, that's a big task, especially when for most of the episodes I don't have full rips so have to rely on my DVDs with stereo copies of the episodes so the music on there is harder to identify...)

Yeah its the same music. It feels like full circle seeing as the ending of the Shakespeare Code is the outcome of the Elizabeth 1st sub plot in Day. There was also that email recently on here from Silva saying that the Day/Time CD is in the pipeline. So it does feel like thats next.

I wonder what I.M Foreman could be. There was only a little bit of music that played as the Policeman worked past Coal Hill. Then Clara's theme played

Thing is the derbyshire theme played briefly at the beginning of the episode then it went into some short music. It would be cool if it was the DOTD Theme. Why are they soo against releasing any of the new themes from Series 5 onwards

I guess because we can get a clean version from the end of the 50th on the DVD and its everywhere on youtube, they arn't releasing it.

the score might not be entirely complete, even if you count the music that was already reused from earlier soundtracks
but I will have to see track times before I can judge that properly

I think we can safely say we have all the new music composed for the 2 episodes. Even if some of the tracks are titled as being in scenes that used previously released music.

I am still not sure. The track titles make it sound like a lot from the middle of 'TOTD' will be absent (even if thats where most of the reused music went)

Giants of Steam - Ron Grainer
Here's a little curio that might just be of interest to some people here - the Giants of Steam EP issued by Decca, 1963. It's music from a BBC documentary about steam trains, written by Ron Grainer performed over backing tracks by the Radiophonic Workshop. It was, by all accounts, instrumental in Grainer getting the Dr Who gig. File under "inessential but jolly":

The music in that clip is fantastic. A rock guitar variation of Twelve's theme with a bit of the Cybermen theme thrown in. I'm pumped for what Murray Gold has instore for this episode.

I think some of the male singing in 'God of Akhaten' was drowned out by the little girl when in the episode, it's somewhat the other way.

Yeah especially with track 22. This Time There’s Three Of Us (The Majestic Tale) being just over 7 minutes long. Must be the complete score from the "I change my mind" Barn scene to when the War Doctor says "Gallifrey Stands". That i'm VERY happy about.
Next up: SAMPLES!!!!!! :D
Shouldn't we be getting the track samples REALLY soon. The last Christmas Special Soundtrack was released on 21st October & the samples for that came out on 27th September. That's good! Even though I only really want to hear 'Man and Wife', 'This Time There’s Three Of Us', 'You Saved It' (I hope that's "That's not Gallifrey"), whichever one has the part where the message of "Doctor Who!?" is broadcast to everyone and 'Never Tell Me The Rules'.

Yes those are the highlights. Handles picking up the General's Message of "Doctor Who?" might be in track 10. The Crack because its 5 minutes and 24 seconds long and that is the scene when the doctor see's the crack and then gets the message.

okay checking those tracktimes with the episodes it seems it does include some reused music in some tracks or it has music that not in the episode but was either muted or replaced with tracked music
(for instance 'He was There' is longer than the scene unless you include the 'Endless Dalek Night'-bit, and 'The Fez and the Portal' is entirely old music unless its out of order)
Its also still missing some minor music from the look of things (like whatever plays when Tennant leaves for his own timeline)
and I have no idea what Back to Christmas/Snow Over Trenzalore/Beginning of the End will be

When Tennant leaves in the tardis from the gallery that's The Leaf from disc 2 of the Series 7 Soundtrack. It doesn't really need to be on this CD. But I can see some music being re-issued on this CD because perhaps it fits with the new music.
'He was there' might not have the 'Endless Dalek Night' bit if it starts from when they first enter the gallery and you hear that series 1 doctor's theme variation, then you have the painting reveal of gallifrey and then the he was there bit.

ah I might also just not recognize some music true
The Volume of the music was dubbed really low for the he was there bit and the music before that so you could hardly tell if there was music. I think thats why most people say "I thought they just re-used lots of previous music" or "I never heard any new music" because all the new stuff was so quiet.
There might be extra music in some tracks we have never heard because it probably didn't fit with the scene in the edit and so was cut. Vale from Disc 2 of The Series 4 Specials comes to mind. The big choral section was never used in the end of time according to Murray so he included it in the CD. I imagine thats the case on this new soundtrack.

the christmas specials of last year also showed music that was edited out slightly in 'Baubles' so that could simply be the case

Even if that's missing, we'll still have Chris's amazing clean edit of that cue. (I would have thought that ALL new music would be included, to make it more unique to the episodes the soundtrack is for)

I wouldn't mind if I.M Foreman had an opening theme version of the Day Of The Doctor theme and the bit when the policeman walks past coal hill. Cause after he walks past and the bell rings theres no new music. and the new music in the policeman scene runs for like 20 seconds. The track is 1:10 long so stuff was obviously cut from the episode.

Hi Guys, been a member here for ages but this is my first post. Love all the work on here, I visit this thread very often!
Just thought i'd comment about the missing track of hello twelve as I think it is possibly part of the "Trenzalore / The Long Song / I am information (reprise)" track. Which I think explains the I am Information track being mentioned. I think the piece of music when Capaldi first appeared is a variation of I am Informaiton, more specifically, the last part, the rhythm and notes just sound familiar. Could be barking up the wrong tree entirely though! :D It would explain it's absence and that they just forgot to put it inside that track when they gave Amazon the track listing. Let me know what you think.

Although the length of that track, leaves me something to be concerned about, it could be a majestic tale situation i supposed, where little bits are slightly edited which gives it the shorter length. We will know soon enough :)

Well if Capaldi's music is in that track then they can happily cut anything from Trenzalore & The Long song portions of the track as long as capaldi's music is there.

2. Selections of unknown source.
3. Chris666eden rips in a little mess: one collection sorted and tagged, the other - not really. Something to sort out in future.
Can someone reupload this? Thanks!

Apparently it is licencing issues keeping unreleased post-series-5 themes off the CDs. It's not Silva Screen, it's not the BBC and it's not Murray Gold.
My best guess is that Warner Chappell want an unreasonably large piece of the royalties pie for each release. It's not a secret that using it for the series is quite expensive, that it was nearly absent from the TV movie and that at one point it was nearly out of bounds for the new series as well. I'd also guess it was one of the main instigators in the 50th box set delay. All because of a terrible publishing decision back in 1964 that they've been unable to reverse, akin to Disney and the Snow White/Pinocchio songs. Maybe it's time for a new tune in the same idiom. [/heretic]
Oh, and it was budget/time constraints, not clearance ones, that left unreleased Gold cues off the box set. These tracks are remixed, auditioned and mastered before the Silva releases and Murray Gold didn't want new stuff going on the CDs that hadn't been through the same rigorous reproduction process as everything else. Silva didn't have the budget for master access or remixing and Gold didn't have the time to oversee it.
Can't wait, thanks! However, I was looking on your main soundtracks post, and you appear to have missed 'Asylum of the Daleks'?

My post referred to the music ONLY. I was mentioning a piece of music from Utopia that Murray Gold has brought back in a new way. Not that It was The Master's return.
The music that returned happened to be the music when the master opened the Fob watch in Utopia. It was a piece of music Murray simply brought back in a new way. Like All The Strange Strange Creatures continued past Series 4.
Many sites including the main Doctor Who site said to avoid spoilers after the UK Broadcast in order for people to stay spoiler free. Of course people are going to comment on here about the episode and it's music. Sorry If I ruined it for anyone. I never intended too. I was blown away by the ending but the music in the scene was amazing and thats what I commented about because it is Murray Gold's best piece of music. Fresh, exciting and new.

Fuck that, the music for the whole episode was fantastic. Murray's been keeping that spontaneous and whimsical side back and going back to his good old days of leitmotifs with greater structural and thematic integrity.

Yep, and she also had a percussive theme early on that was essentially a scrambled anagram of the End Of Time drums!
I've said from Deep Breath who she was, and when the swirly strings theme kicked in, my wife went "you were right!" So Murray's little in-jokes were picked up on...!

Sorry to drag this thread back to the early 1990s, but does anyone have a copy of the two versions of the theme Mark Ayres used to top and tail his Silva Screen releases of The Greatest Show In The Galaxy and The Curse of Fenric?
To reiterate, not the ones from The World of Doctor Who which was sometime mid 90s nor the CD which featured theme variants by the McCoy composers.

Wondering how, ripping the episode into audio channels and doing what it's possible to remove the old music and place the new, without loosing sound effects and voice and palce it all back, which is quite hard because apparently, the sound in the blu-ray episode it's a bit weird, it doesn't play well sometimes, sounds sort of hollow in certain players, etcetera.
If I had more mixing experience, I'd probably do it when the disk is released.

But, why they didn't use it in the episode? I don't understand it.

Assuming it's possible to do, I might have a go at doing it once my current workload has eased a bit :)

It should be possible, as long as you're willing to sacrifice quite a lot of the sound effects that are housed with the music in the 5.1 audio.

I can always redub new ones :P got quite a large library of sound effects, including part of the same library the BBC sound people use a lot on Doctor Who!

Question about the samples, namely 'Never tell me the rules' (though I would assume that this would be the same for all the samples, just haven't listened to them yet) - Is it my imagination or is this track (Noticed it from the This is Gallifrey part) playing slower sound wise than from the broadcast version of the song?
I can't work out if it is slow for some reason or it's down to hearing the music without the SFX which is throwing me as some parts sound ok, yet others sound slow :\

'Never Tell me the Rules' seems to be longer than the TV version
most liekly the TV version just muted the first part before the crack appears again

This is actually kinda upsetting to me as a big score / Murray fan. Not only that he spent time composing music that went unused due to some stupid higher-up decisions, but that having it now on the soundtrack, as lucky as we are, kinda makes the episodes themselves less exciting for me.
I now find myself more disappointed about what could have been in place of all the lame decisions they made to reuse old stuff in DotD and TotD. I hope they find a way to make use of his music in future episodes because some of this sounds too great to let go. I'm thinking like how Song for Four was used for the Eleven/Clara phone call in Deep Breath.
Poor Murray, he tried so hard to make epic scores and they only used like half.

to be fair, it doesnt seem like TotD has as much inserted music
or at the very least all of its tracks on the CD dont correspond with parts of the episode where old music played

We should not judge the situation just yet. We have no idea what decisions were made by whom, or for what reasons. Murray himself may have had a hand in the final decisions. We just don't know yet. Perhaps the liner notes will be enlightening.

That would be nice. It's odd either way because we don't usually get the amount of unreleased stuff we will be with this album. Something happened. I just hope the pieces we love are all there. Maybe when the itunes samples are up I can judge better - I can't view the itunes uk previews.
EDIT: Nevermind, found out how to change the store. I was thinking the itunes abbreviation was UK but it's GB.

I read earlier about people wanting to match up the unused audio with the 50th Anniversary episodes. I've been editing Doctor Who stuff for a while, now and you would be surprised how easy it is to get the episodes music free. The BBC Surround Sound Audio is split really cleanly. I have all the episodes backed up and unscored on my hardrive. Completely music free. I've had them for years. It's how I make my trailers on youtube (Matthew Harkin), it makes editing so much easier, especially for rescores and such.
So... matching up unused music is entirely possible. I was messing about with the unused Gallifrey theme in 'No More' last night. A simple youtube search will be sufficient. Download links for all the episode audio, completely music free are available. They're pretty easy to track down.
EDIT: Actually, hang on.

There we go.
Hope this helped. If you have editing software, just match up the audio with the episode and the whole thing is yours to play about with. =]

I downloaded and heard bits of the 50th. Although it is indeen music free, there are stuff around from sound effects that aren't heard: For example, when they save Gallifrey, the big boom and the sound of the Dalek ship passing by the screen isn't heard.
Still, it's a start. Once the score comes out, I'll play around, see what I can do, but no promises if it's a good mix lol

Yeah, there are a few SFX that go unheard, but too hear no music at all is promising. Brilliant in fact. After all, SFX could always be added. It would be slightly alternate but lifting SFX from a previous episode would help. There's always loud bangs on Doctor Who! :D

Take note of the added choir on This Time There's Three of us. Also, The Doctors Theme is everywhere. Especially at the start of the soundtrack. More so than in the final episode.
Regarding download samples. I just ripped them from Youtube. I can wait for the full soundtrack, I just couldn't resist downloading them to see what I could do!

The whole scene with the Dalek ship and the Doctor before the crack appears would be less dramatic with the song, I guess. Notice how much wieght is put on the Doctor's sentiment of that being an ending to his life, and a defeat, without being able to do absolutely anything. And then BAM! Gallifrey comes to save the day.
Just started ripping the music from Death in Heaven and am REALLY loving the mad piece of music used for Missy throughout the episode.
Edit: Actually, having ripped the music, I just love the whole score!
