The 'sting' on the Five Doctors closing theme wasn't a separate sound, it was a series of echoes of the melody, likely done by reversing a short section of the tape and running it through a delay unit.

Ah now that's a good question! Being a fan of Mark and Dominic's music Season 26 does well, and Season 13 too for Geoffrey Burgon and some of Dudley's better scores. I think for diversity and interest Season 20 clinches it, having Mawdryn, Enlightenment and King's Demons scores in it (and maybe The Five Doctors too if you classify it as 20.7 :) ). I'd be hard pressed to pick a Murray series, though the themes of the early stories are still very memorable!

Yeah, definitely going to revisit them. I'd probably go as far as to say that I'm never exactly done with any episode or season. For example, a WIP I've been working on for a while is the series 1 version of 'I'm Coming to Get You' from the climax of the parting of the ways, I'm just not quite done yet. For sure, I'll add some more from episodes I haven't done many for. :)

First time listening, and I love it! I can hear the Audition healing going on for the sfx!
If you have a 5.1 mix that is either PAL or in NTSC but slowed down (American re-release), you can invert the two surround channels and drop it by 2-5db, and play it with the two front tracks. The voices/background effects will mostly be gone!
Thank you so much for these.

My faithful rendition (
https://soundcloud.com/norrie67/dr-who-piano-without-dynamics) of the original 1964 sheet music version of the theme, albeit played on a pretend piano rather than oscillators. It ends slightly differently from the version(s) we're all familiar with, with a beautiful melancholic final chord followed by a glissando - no wind bubbles here.
Also, this (

Now with added this (

Anyone know when the official Season 9 OST is due out?
No one knows. It probably won't be announced until a month or so before release as with Series 8. At this stage, we won't see it until October at the earliest (with an announcement in September). December is looking the most likely however. Since there isn't a new series this year, Silva are probably hanging on until Christmas to release the soundtrack then since that's when the next episode airs. They might even hang on until Early 2017 and include music from this year's Christmas Special on it, however I doubt this. We've rarely waited more than a full year since the episode's whose music is featured on the soundtrack aired (the 2009 Specials is the only instance of this happening I think) so I don't think we'll be waiting for too much longer. I'd say we're looking at a late September-Late December release window for the Series 9 soundtrack. The 19th of September, the date The Magician's Apprentice aired on last year, falls on a Monday this year. That would be a full year since Series 9 began. That is a prime release date I think which would mean we'd get an announcement very soon if Silva choose that date. If we don't get an announcement within the next two weeks, it won't be released until October at the earliest.

If At All. We Should Face Facts That Maybe Series 8 Was The Last OST.
That is highly doubtful. Doctor Who OSTs are reliable sellers and Silva wouldn't dare risk angering the entire Doctor Who fanbase (and then some including BBC) by not releasing any more. It really wouldn't look good on the company to cancel one of their most famous soundtrack releases for a very popular show and would be a very poor business decision. Even if Silva didn't want to release it, BBC and Murray would just take it to someone who did. BBC are very proud of Murray's music and care about it a lot. If BBC didn't care about it, we wouldn't get events like the Doctor Who Proms, Doctor Who Live or the Symphonic Spectaculars; events dedicated to celebrating Murray's music for the show and events that always sell a lot of tickets. According to rumours, BBC even forced Silva to release Series 8 earlier so people who watched the Symphonic Spectacular could then purchase the soundtrack if they liked the music performed (since last year's Symphonic Spectacular was focused on Series 8). Murray's music is one of the most consistently praised aspects of the show. Series 9 will get a soundtrack one way or another, even if Murray and BBC have to put it together and release it themselves. There's no way BBC are letting the Doctor Who soundtracks stop. Especially since this is the BBC we're talking about. If there's one thing BBC likes doing, it's making money off Doctor Who in any way they can. Soundtracks included.
Series 8 was not the last OST. Series 9 is just taking a long time to release, similar to the soundtracks for the 2009 Specials, The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe/The Snowmen and The Day of the Doctor/The Time of the Doctor.

What is the Symphonic Spectacular? is it like a live orchestra?
pottyaboutpotter1
08-14-2016, 03:00 AM
What is the Symphonic Spectacular? is it like a live orchestra?
It's a live performance of selected pieces of music from Doctor Who performed either by a local orchestra (outside the UK) or the actual orchestra who perform the music for the TV show; the BBC National Orchestra of Wales (in the UK). The performance is conducted by Ben Foster (the conductor for the actual TV show) and hosted by Doctor Who Cast Members (usually Peter Davison or Alex Kingston) and accompanied by scenes from the show playing on a big screen (usually scenes relevant to the music performed, so Dalek themes will have Dalek clips, music from a certain episode will have clips from that episode) and monsters from the show emerging and making their way across the stage or through the audience.
The Spectacular is relatively new and is expected to tour again in a few years (so the show will be "fresh" with new music). The pieces of music that generally always get performed on every version of the show are the Doctor Who theme (obviously), This Is Galifrey, Vale Decem, Song of Freedom, the themes of all the companions (Rose's Theme, Martha's Theme, Donna's Theme, Amy's Theme and Clara's Theme), a suite of Dalek music and the theme of the current Doctor (on the latest version of the show in 2015, A Good Man replaced I Am The Doctor). The Spectacular started in Australia, but after popular demand a UK tour started in 2015 before an Australia and New Zealand tour in the same year. There's been three Spectaculars so far; 2012, 2014 and 2015 and each one has been wildly different in terms of the music performed. The next Spectacular will likely be in 2018 and focus on Series 10/11.
Fun fact: A running joke in the Symphonic Spectacular is the Daleks trying to conquer the world by making everyone listen to "Dalek Music" (this is the lead in to the Dalek theme suite) while Ben Foster attempts to take them on. Last year, Peter Davison got involved leading to this exchange:
DALEK: Records indicate you are known to the Daleks!
PETER DAVISON: I suppose that's rather possible. Do you watch a lot of television?
The host also usually makes a joke about the town/city they're performing in. For example, I saw the show performed in Leeds and Peter Davison joked "I'm only going to be here for one day, but I hear that's long enough to put in a good stint as manager of Leeds United Football Club!" which garnered both laughs and a few "ooo"s.
A not so fun fact: BBC tried to use the Symphonic Spectacular as an excuse not to release the "Dark Water/ Death in Heaven" 3D double bill in the UK using the argument; "The UK already had something special with the Symphonic Spectacular!". It did not go down well. At all.

Yeah, that's the one that's still a work in progress. The crowd sound effects are awful in that one.
When it gets to the point where I can't remove anything else without slaughtering the audio quality, I'll upload it.
Hopefully some time soon. :) I just want it to be as clean as possible.
Looking forward to hear the result. Thank you so much for all your work!

So has Silva Screen lost the rights to Murrays Music & the Theme Tune?
If I recall, someone posted a link to a music catalogue containing listings of Murrays music from Series 1 - 8 including Series 9. I think that music catalogue was owned by BMG. This was quite a few months ago.

Did it include a track listing for series 9, by any chance?
Chris666eden
08-21-2016, 09:01 PM
No it was just listed as 'DOCTOR WHO: SEASON 9: MURRAY GOLD' but there was a separate listing with a track titled 'BEETHOVEN'S FIFTH: MURRAY GOLD" which I assume is the piano music from the opening scene to Before The Flood. why it was listed separately I'm not sure.

are BMG the type to hoard music and never release soundtracks?

It's hard to say, really. Didn't really know anything about this company before this came along. It looks like they do mostly pop stuff, though, so I'm not sure how they'll handle soundtracks like these.
All we can do is hope for the best, I suppose.

The Doctor Who soundtracks have always been good sellers, so I can't see BMG turning down good money especially since BBC wants the music to be released. Most likely, BBC will pressure BMG to release a Series 9 Soundtrack. In fact, Silva Screen taking a long time to release the soundtracks for most of BBC's shows might even have contributed to BBC selling the rights to BMG. While Silva output quality work, their release schedule has been... less than reliable. Also Silva's attitude towards the fans has been indifferent at best, which doesn't reflect well on BBC. Of course there's also the chance nothing has changed. BMG may simply own the rights to the music while the soundtracks themselves are still released through Silva. Or BMG will release the soundtracks. Perhaps, BMG has promised more regular soundtrack releases? It might be worth someone emailing BMG to get clarification on the situation.
Reading BMG's website, it seems they're offering a more beneficial deal to BBC for the music. We're not going to see an end to the Doctor Who soundtracks, the line has been far too profitable for that. In fact, BMG could be a huge improvement over Silva. The deal is likely why we haven't seen a Series 9 release yet; it'll probably be the first release from BMG and will likely hit in the next few months. BBC have already proven they want Murray's music released (and recognise what a big cash cow it is) so the question isn't will BMG release soundtracks, it's when.

For that track, I'd say there's no way to isolate that on it's own. You could maybe try isolating the center, but most of the percussion is stereo.

That percussion track was part of an actual action based piece. there were stems for it for individual sections, orchestra, percussion, synth, bass etc. But no stems for the individual parts of the percussion track.
There could be a proper version of that as the one Murray uses sounds quite different and he does seem to have other little percussive elements that fit seamlessly into the track I posted. I dunno where to find those.
I still can't find the drum sample he uses in tracks like Pressing Need To Save The World.

Do you know of the name of the virtual instrument he used to make that percussion?

I'm sure this is used in A Pressing Need To Save The World. Also in Torchwood Exit Wounds, when Jack stands infront of the Hub door and it slides open, theres another sample used in A Pressing Need that is isolated with no echo, no sfx at all. Maybe someone can isolate it from the 5.1 mix?
FACT: Ben Foster first used the Stems heard in A Pressing Need in the Torchwood Finale and Murray heard these and liked them so much that Ben gave them to him and Murray then composed the variations for Partners In Crime & Stolen Earth.

In that video itself it says the percussion was made with Native-Instruments Kontakt 3.5, Spectrasonics Stylus RMX and East West Stormdrum 1. So it has to be in one of those. Not sure which one though.
UPDATE: Spectrasonics Stylus RMX contains the percussive elements Ben Foster uses in Torchwood. Namely the opening monologue music:

Haha, yes it was. Well, Epic Energy is the directory, and the percussion is 160 Find The Exit. Find The Exit plays at 160BPM normally- I had to change it to 90BPM for the first 3/4 of the track, and then bumped the hi hats (and I should've done the toms as well) up to 180BPM for the last quarter.

I've gone and compiled the stems to 160 - Find The Exit for everyone to use. I have BPM's of 90, 130, 160, and 180 included in the .zip. The default sample rate is 44100Hz and I've exported them as 16 bit wav's, so they've had no loss in quality from the first export. The final size of the .zip is 193.89Mb.

So I got the Spectrasonics Omnisphere and WOW! More stuff used by Murray Gold especially samples used in Series 5 & 6 to do with Amy and other stuff from The Beast Below such as Choral samples.
Will post a collection here saying where its been used.
I've found the sample used for the eerie music when Amy begins to remember Rory & when she see's the ring.
Discovered the synth sample Murray used in 'This Planet is Ours' from A Christmas Carol.

Wow, how long until you have all the samples Murray's used? :P With all that you now have, are you able to authentically recreate music from series 1 as that was mostly sample based?

You'd have to identify what orchestral library he used for that. I don't think it was Omnisphere (at least not in Series 1-3) as Omnisphere wasn't released until 2008, and is not a primarily Orchestral library anyway.

Interesting. It certainly does sound like a sample, and I figured it'd be in the Omnisphere somewhere. If it's not there, it's probably sampled from somewhere. I'll check the other usual suspects and post my findings here. :)

I'm still trying to figure out if it is actually sampled or not. There's that version in Turn Left that's in a completely different pitch than the original. If it is in fact sampled, it's probably in the omnisphere somewhere.

For the 2005 theme, I think all we've got is the synth, strings, brass, and percussion.
I'm not sure about the series 5 theme and onwards, though. I do know that for the series 8/9 sting, that's a partially sampled riser from a scifi sound collection. That's also where a lot of the risers (like the intro to Hello Hello from series 8) is from.
That's the best I've got, there.

You're too kind *blushes modestly*. The Astronauts is currently a work in progress - I made the cardinal mistake of doing the most satisfying bit first - but if you liked that you may enjoy this (

Richard Baker
09-10-2016, 09:08 PM
I thought I had finished Greenwich Chorus! - it was the first 'this' in post #11719. The stems for the electronic version, if you really want them, I could load up on MEGA or something, but probably not till next week - the pretend-acoustic version too if desired. I had to create my own written score for the latter version (for the pretend musicians and pretend choristers to read from) so you could have the sheet music too if that's any use. I've also made my own sheet music for Dover Castle, Banqueting Music, The Fish People, A Landing in Scotland and A Whisper from Space so far.
If sheet music's your bag, there's a very good (click-to-play) transcription of the Peter Howell theme here (
https://musescore.com/user/1377266/scores/1462116) but you have to register. The same user has done astonishingly good transcriptions of all versions of the theme from 1963 to 1989 but I think his/her Howell's the most impressive. And, if you explore, there are also countless playable sheet music versions of more modern DW music. If you can read music it's hog heaven!

There was a compilation of music from 'Tenth Planet' and 'Tomb of the Cybermen' posted here a while back...
Here's a few for you to be going on with (all HQ MP3 - uploading FLACs is a bit of a nightmare with 200MB limit on MediaFire, so unless specifically requested, I'll only be uploading MP3 versions):
The Sea Devils (Uncut TV Soundtrack) (
http://www.mediafire.com/?p1u916f4fdzc5bp) (Mono MP3 160kbps)
The Tripods (Original TV Soundtrack) (
http://www.mediafire.com/?s05o2jpyk0udciz) (Stereo MP3 256kbps)
The Tripods: Pool of Fire (Music Suite) (
http://www.mediafire.com/?wfwi5vkhi7p10mv) (Stereo MP3 320kbps)
Does anyone have the CD of 'The Tripods' soundtrack - the rip here is an old one from Demonoid. A FLAC rip would be most welcome! 'Pool of Fire' music suite is from the DVD release, and both titles have full CD art by Pearlcorderman.
I'm currently updating the TV movie score and 'The Mutants' for uploading, along with 'Classic Music from the Tom Baker Era' & '30 Years at the Radiophonic Workshop'. Stay tuned!
I know this is an old post but is it possible to post The Tripods (Original TV Soundtrack) in flac? I'd be grateful if this is possible. I also learned recently that there were a couple other Tripods CD releases (not the Pool of Fire CD) - both remix albums with newer remixed version of the themes. I haven't been able to find those anywhere and they are no longer available for purchase. Does anybody have any links for those by any chance? I heard samples online of the remixed themes and they sound pretty cool.

If no-one else has stumped up with this I'll sort you something out next week. Preferred format?
I prefer MP3 as my formate
Which version - or no preference?

didnt even remember that the endscene of 42 used the Masters theme so obviously
Thanks, Zak! But where do the Bad Wolf tracks fit in with the other tracks you've done from the story?
Edit: figured it out and updated the post on page 457 (
Thread 72196).

Yeah, cute little way to end it off. I did notice while editing though that right before it cuts to the theme song, there's a hint of strings that aren't present in The Master Vainglorious. Left it in because I though it was interesting. I'll have to find where that leads when I do the Sound of Drums...

Again, thank you very much for keeping that post updated! I don't suppose you'd mind if I added it to my signature for the sake of accessibility? ;)

No, I don't mind; it's all your (amazing) work!

Does anyone have any choir samples Murray may have used?
He's used Symphonic Choirs (
http://www.soundsonline.com/Symphonic-Choirs) for a lot of series 1-4. Most of the time, that's what you're hearing. The staccato choirs featured in variations of All The Strange Strange Creatures in series 3 episode 7 (42) were from there as well.
I just recently found this out.

If you finish the Astronauts and Greenwhich chorus, could i have a copy of the stems for my collection? :)

I like that, particularly the opening theme, although the phrase 'sow's ear' springs to mind ;)

I did this with the film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Phantom of the Opera' and it worked a treat on removing the remaining vocal echos after I'd knocked the centre channel out!

It works really well on series 1-4 of Doctor Who, but series 5-7 just doesn't for some reason. It's like the surround channels had slight reverb added to the whole mix. It even works on series 8 though. I'm not sure what's up with using this method.
