Many of the links on page 1 seem to be corrupt and there are 230 pages of subsequent posts. Is there any summary of links that might still be active? Thanks!

A nice starting place is a recent post where Dr. Matt collected all his isolated soundtrack scores and other goodies. Here's a link to the post: http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/doctor-who-collection-all-soundtracks-72196/193.html#post2532699

Then just browse or ask people for specific things...

CGCJ, thanks for your work but why are your episode rips not mastered in any way? Not even fade-outs! It's no fun at all to listen to these raw versions because the volume keeps changing all the time. :(

Yeah, thanks for editing that really childish comment - who would have guessed that after about 12,000 posts a user could still be this patronizing.
The raw material is there so I'll just take one of the already posted episode rips, edit it and post it here so you know what I mean, ok? I wouldn't have asked if I couldn't do it. Search inside FFShrine and you'll find some complete soundtracks I have made. Will get back here as soon.

alpha, I'm sorry. I regretted as soon as I posted. Not feeling well, Just had a moment. So, I edited...Yeah, I know these moments. :-\
Anyway, here's an example for an edited track ("#1 Previously" from "The Satan Pit"), the wave stream for comparison. The problem with many audio tracks from a video stream is that the volume of the music is automatically lowered when there's speech.
What I did successively: Add fade, normalize, lower high volume parts, raise low volume parts, normalize again, and so on. Last step was to raise the volume of the complete first section until the speech at the end.
And here's the track for listening: https://www.mediafire.com/?e9jc4c4a8533kjo

And that would be? (Sorry about not editing any of my episode rips, I lack the knowledge on how to...)

My rips are simply the music ripped from the 5.1 DVDs as they're presented in the music layer of the 5.1 sound... (Cleans tracks used where possible)

Hm, which channels do you use to make your rips? I guess only the frontL and frontR, am I right? There is no "music layer". ;)
Here's what I do, given that I have the .mkv file of the episode:
1. extract the audio track with MKVExtractGUI
2. convert the dts file to multichannel wav with eac3to
3. split the 6ch wave to mono streams with wavewizard
4. add L,R and LFE to an audio montage in WaveLab and render
Result is left and right front with the LFE mixed in.

Hi Amanda,

Sorry to hear you're a little under the weather.

I'll let CGCJ answer the first question.

The second : The Adventure Games were a set of Games starring Matt Smith and Karen Gillan that were downloadable for free from the BBC website. more here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_Who:_The_Adventure_Games).

I use the first two audio layers, the ones that contain the music, if there's another layer that contains music, I'm sorry for not using it in my rips. Once I've got the two layers, I then listen through it and mute any parts that don't feature any music, and once that's done, I go and save all of each section of music as tracks and then use the full isolated music track for reference to the time the music starts to then watch the episode to get track titles. (I edit the music in Audacity...)

As someone who has been busting my butt to work on these 11 "album" collections and putting so much work into WHO soundtracks I just wanted to say that if you have all this knowledge and detailed way of doing things perhaps you could just make clean rips from the 5.1 tracks yourself and then do all this work you suggest and then share them here online for all of us instead of complaining that someone else ripped them but didn't do the work. Personally, it sounds like it would be the best option.

That way you get the rips the way you want them and you will be happy.

Sometimes the saying is true, if you want something done right (or the way you'd like it to be) you should do it yourself.

Actually, after my initial, hasty post, I looked at Alpha's profile, saw his posts and saw he has done a lot of custom score stuff in the game section. So based on an extremely brief glimpse I figured I was way too hasty to spout my mouth off and that he also seems to post a lot of stuff and probably has at least some idea what he is doing. WAY more than I do. So I have no moral or technical ground to critique him from....

Mine is an observation. I have more than once redone entire soundtracks or music mixes (I edit music and videos all the time and sometimes even get paid for it!) just to suit my needs. I was suggesting that if he wants things done that way, then do it himself. Its what I do. I don't post EVERYTHING I work on online because a lot of times its just for me.

I am in no way criticizing Alpha... I am merely saying that perhaps he could just do what I do if something isnt up to his liking... do it himself.

I am currently ripping music from a Troughton story myself instead of using the edits that have been previously provided because I want the editing to be smoother and the cleaner audio track. Am I on here asking the original editor of the music post why they didn't do something a certain way? NO. Sometimes you just gotta do it yourself to make yourself happy.

(I edit the music in Audacity...)Perfectly fine, yes. The LFE only holds the low frequencies. I've compared and found it sounded a bit better with the LFE included.
I edit with Steinberg WaveLab - really easy to use btw. The only things I do with Adobe Audition are fades because you can do an exponential fade there (which you can't do in WaveLab, i.e. only iterated).
At this point I'm not sure as to what to do next. Of course I'm willing to share my edits here but maybe it's better if I continue where you left off? Or I could start with Series 3. My time is pretty limited, so I don't know how long it will take to split, edit and compare everything to official soundtracks. Luckily we have lists like Doctor Who: Original Television Soundtrack: Series 3 - Tardis Data Core, the Doctor Who Wiki (http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Doctor_Who:_Original_Television_Soundtrack:_Series _3) that definitely help with such tasks. As I'm not deeply emerged into the soundtracks of DW, can anybody point me to any unreleased clean tracks/soundtracks?

Amanda
03-18-2014, 01:08 AM
What I really need is some very, very basic tips/guidelines on editing the unreleased samples I get from composer sites. I can trim and fade in/out, and I attempt some volume leveling but I am flying blind. I know nothing. So in very lay layman's terms I could use advice.

Alpha the only real clean unreleased tracks are the Series 1 & 2 matertapes, and The girl In The Fireplace, posted around these parts somewhere. Also, music from the Adventures games seems clean albeit **extremely*8 low quality bit wise.

RIP Steve Moore, author of some of the early DW comic strips in Doctor Who Weekly and Monthly, whose contribution undoubtedly helped to make the magazine an ongoing success. He also created or co-created Abslom Daak and the Kroton comic strips, and much excellent non-DW related material for 2000 AD and other comics. He was also a founder of the Fortean Times (one of the original 'Gang of Fort', as they called themselves).

So how much on the boxset is previously unreleased material? With all the various soundtracks and sound effects released over the years I can't keep track.

The poor showing of Ninth Doctor music plus the novelty packaging [I detest novelty packaging!] have probably turned me off this set TBH but maybe I could sway back in favour.

To me, that 11 disk box set doesn't actually sound that great... It's just a load of tracks that have already been released, apart from a few new tracks, but the prospect of having the complete TV Movie score is nice! (Hopefully it will actually be the tracks as just the music and NOT how some of the tracks were presented on the isolated music, with sound effects...)

Dissapointing as hell :( Although - if someone will upload it here, it would be nice.
Anyway - waiting for Imposibleego set.

Who is buying it?

I personally think that 11 disc set is not even a step up from the 4 disc set. I wasn't really planning on buying it and now I'm absolutely sure I'm not going to buy it. Plus, it's sixteen weeks for delivery! The music I actually want on that set would probably amount to less than 10 minutes

Am I right in thinking that the following Dudley Simpson tracks have never been released?

27. Music from “Carnival of Monsters” Episode 1 (3:35)
29. Music from “Frontier in Space” Episodes 1 and 2 (5:37)
34. Music from “Planet of the Spiders” Part 2 (2:44)
18. Music from “The Sun Makers” (11:22)

This entire set really should be made available to purchase as an affordable download, rather than limited to an over-priced & over-sized box-set.

18. Music from “The Sun Makers” (11:22)

This entire set really should be made available to purchase as an affordable download, rather than limited to an over-priced & over-sized box-set.

Yeah, it looks like that's the 'exclusive' Dudley material. However, there is a 1:46 Frontier in Space track on the 4 disc edition.

Scanning down the tracklist of classic series discs there do appear to be several titles I don't instantly recognise, but it is suspicious that the only disc they have given the "previously unreleased" information for is the TV Movie disc. The new series discs in this set can effectively be ignored, they are just padding. Nothing there at all that owners of the regular soundtrack CDs don't have.

I believe the classic series discs aren't big sellers so rather than put out a single disc of previously unreleased tracks from that era and achieve modest sales at a low profit margin, they have needlessly bloated the set to huge size and put it in a fancy box so they can whack the price right up.

Silva appear to have gone the drug dealer route of selling a little for a lot by mixing a tiny bit of the good stuff with a huge amount of worthless filler material!

Definitely a shame that all that previously unreleased Dudley Simpson material doesn't have a release of its own, even if only via download. he does have his fans, and yet he's woefully underrepresented on official soundtrack releases. We all know the reasons for that, but it seems very strange that up until now this is the only way these surviving examples of material have seen the light of day. My pockets just aren't that deep, sadly.

Some download options would be great for us consumers but they won't do that because making tracks available outside of the set would dilute the appeal of the very expensive box. Rather than selling thousands of downloads and making a profit, they are going to try selling hundreds of overpriced boxsets in the hope of making double that profit.

It is a risky approach to take, Silva Screen themselves don't seem too confident in it either. Usually this kind of release would be a numbered limited edition, such as "Limited to 500" or "Limited to 1000". They aren't sure enough to put any decent size number on the edition in case only 120 of them sell! That's also why it won't be available through other retailers; with potentially low sales, Silva need to be sure every scrap of profit available goes to them alone!

Maybe the voracious merchandise collectors will be attracted to it due to the packaging, will that help make enough sales? But honestly, it isn't even a good Tardis model, the proportions are all wrong. If that box was on ebay as a standalone Tardis model, would it even sell for 10?

Would a limited edition without a preset quantity lose some appeal for the collector though? Isn't the exclusivity an important factor, the chance that later on people will want one and be prepared to pay inflated prices? The problem with this is that the edition is only limited by the number of orders; if only 100 sell, then sure it is an exclusive item, but the reason for the exclusivity is that nobody wanted one! On the other hand, it might be a smash hit best seller, in which case there will loads of them about and prices will tumble on the secondhand market.

But hey, it does have a flashing light on top. :-D

There would also appear to be music from The Chase, an excerpt from The Macra Terror, title music from The Ice Warriors and "War Chief Music" from The War Games.

Although I am unsure about the below though in whether they are music or not. I guess we'll find out in time:

"Outer Space" from The Ambassadors of Death
"Mysterious Robots" from Robot
"Movellan Runs Down" from Destiny of the Daleks
"Pretty Planet" from Nightmare of Eden

I am surprised about The Seeds of Death music though. There is more music featured on the DVD photo gallery than there is on the CD.

Music is on the photo gallery of each of these stories. But this looks like the full version of the music.

Planet of the Spiders music only exist because Dick Mills is credited on the original paperwork. Also The Sun Makers probably only exists because Paddy Kingsland did the special sound.

Mysterious Robots is a track by Dudley Simpson.

Which Doctor?

I personally think that 11 disc set is not even a step up from the 4 disc set. I wasn't really planning on buying it and now I'm absolutely sure I'm not going to buy it. Plus, it's sixteen weeks for delivery! The music I actually want on that set would probably amount to less than 10 minutes

Damn, I was definitely going to buy it, but with the cost of shipping, it would be over $300+ dollars...yeah, I'm gonna have to do some serious thinking.

Is it weird that I break my own "its not canon!" rule with McGann's Shada? lol Oh I wish I had music from that one I could have used. But sadly, I do not.

Sorry for quoting a post thirty pages back, I only visit here every few months to catch up and saw this.

BF Shada's up there as my holy grail of unreleased Who music, and sadly I've accepted by now that it'll likely never see the light of day (much like pretty much all of my non-Who grails, but that's another story).

However, were you aware of the short suite that was included as menu music on the DVD? It's literally an MP3 on the disc you can just copy off. Apologies if you've already noticed that, just checking.

Also, I believe some people were looking for new series FX? I have the ambience for the 2010-2013 TARDIS Interior if anyone's interested.

No no, it's the menu for the animated version on the disc. It's very clearly the BF score, it includes several very short cues from later episodes. I couldn't place most of them, the only one I could was the march of the Krargs.

Is this a new version then? How is it different to the Pilot Theme that's included on the 'Doctor Who at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop: Volume 1' album?

Quite disappointed by the track list, no Warrior's Gate suite, a rather amateurish looking TARDIS box that stands over 40cm tall... So much so that I'm reconsidering buying it. I can see myself designing a batch of jewel case covers for Discs 1-8 for ease of access if I do buy it - or to house my pirate copies if I don't lol! Paying 145 and waiting 5 months for something I only want 2/3 of is a little disheartening. Why Silva didn't take the opportunity to release previously unavailable Murray Gold tracks I really don't know. I'm not a huge fan of his post 2006 Doctor Who music, there's only about 6 tracks of his that ever make it on to my MP3 player, but I know I'm in a minority. New Murray Gold material would likely have doubled or tripled the number of pre-orders. Given that as it is, this set is more appealing to Classic Who music fans, why they didn't release less ostentatious 8 and 3 disc sets as well, I really can't fathom.

Disappointed rant over!

Cannot justify that price for so little new material (ironically, had the 4CD version not come out I'd have been quite tempted). It's saying something that I'll be able to grab someone's FLAC upload of the set (god willing!), take out all the 'new' tracks I want/need, and get them on a single CDR. To be honest, my rule is that if they've been on a DVD iso score, they're 'previously released'. Meaning I already own copies in some form or other of about 90% of more of this.

The way they've filled the Ninth Doctor disc is cheap and nasty (the More Than 30 stuff is welcome, but that would have also fit on the top of the Eighth Doctor disc, and been more chronological). They shouldn't have even bothered past 8 and lopped three discs off - I'd wager there's not ONE person ordering this box who doesn't already own all those Gold CDs anyway (or if they don't, they don't want them!). OR used it to premiere the Day/Time release a few months early.

With the suicidal, anniversary-missing delay, the no-longer-quantity-limited element and the 'we'll make however many people want' resignation, I get the impression even Silva wish they'd never bothered. Soundtrack collecting is a niche - huge expensive box set soundtrack collecting a niche within a niche. And yet every single time the soundtrack labels think that they can break the curse. Never works, something always goes wrong, or worse - no-one really thinks it's worth buying (hello Ron Jones Project). Sometimes less is more.

Silva's 'let's go back to the classic soundtrack releases' project has been an absolute disaster so far. Androzani - fair enough, some wanted it (I could never stand that one, mind). Krotons - who the hell wants that? And Ghost Light - already been out on CD and DVD, no-one needs it a third time, just Mark Ayres trying to make more out of his contribution to Doctor Who than he actually did yet again. Plus a load of horrible vanity vinyl. I'd have done a staggered, numbered series of themed single-CD, full-price compilations - nice suites and cherry-picked cues, non-chronological, just great listenable albums of about four or five boiled-down classic soundtracks a disc (some short selections, some longer, and using the rare stuff as fairy dust stretched over the range), one announced every few months or so, maybe limited disc quantities too (keeping d/ls in print), until interest died down. A solid, collectable 'gotta catch em all' range but also a really bulletproof series of brilliant albums. But then I'm sensible like that!

I've waited a decade for classic Doctor Who CDs to start coming out again and they've messed it up, like the other time I waited a decade for it and they messed it up, possibly for the last time now. How do you miss an open goal by so much? TWICE?!

The photo gallery on The Invasion DVD is wonderfully comprehensive, I've been listening to it for years. I doubt there is anything on the 11 disc set that isn't on here and elsewhere. (ok it might not be CD quality but it's perfectly acceptable in my view)

As for no new Gold's music, I think that it's not Silva's decision, but BBC.
If I remember correctly, Silva said that this was BBC who didn't allow them to include new arrangement of Doctor's Theme for Series 7... Maybe BBC blocked idea of releasing unreleased music from "new series" in both 11 & 4 CD sets?

pernclub
03-22-2014, 03:21 PM
Oh, I'm certain it's BBC - they seem to have got a little odd about these things. I suspect it's an increased cost though rather than them outright saying 'no'. But Silva should just have gone 'okay then, nothing past 1996 in the box set'. They don't have to keep re-releasing the same tracks again and again to an audience of no-one.

I was playing devil's advocate slightly with the Krotons comment - but even then it should have been part of a larger special sound compilation and not a CD on its own. Such a thing not selling is a very good excuse for them not to bother with anything else.

A thought - maybe they should have done this box set by composer instead? Some composers sharing a disc, obviously. With a 'Stock Music' disc and an 'Odds And Ends'.

The best soundtrack release of 2013 was the John Smith And The Common Men 7". And even then they only made about five.

I was under the impression that all CDs had been compiled by Mark Ayres. He chose his favourite tracks (from those that still exist) to create the 11 disc compilation.

The Dr Who theme is published by Erle Music/Warner Chappell, so presumably the BBC have little say themselves over its use.

Not this particular set, but a comprehensive classic set by composer perhaps not including so much already released material, no stupid, shelf-busting packaging, and a price much more respecting of the fan base. Other than music to which this community has had no access, we have produced - and will continue to produce - far better here.

So I really am in two minds - I was convinced i was going to do it despite the price and lack of any new gold music and as far as I can tell - if you have the following:
30 years at the radiophonic workshop
The 50th 4 disc set
Doctor who Volume 1: the early years
Doctor who Volume 2: New beginnings
Doctor who - The music
Murray Golds new series albums
Doctor Who sound effects vol 19
And not forgetting DrMatts massive contribution of soundtracks

These should be the only tracks you do not have and therefore the only reason to purchase the box set. ( I hope this is useful)

1 02. Doctor Who (Pilot Theme) (2:05)
2 04. Entry into the TARDIS (Full length version) (11:56)
3 26. The Chase (Music and Effects from the Soundtrack) (1:37)
4 28. Dalek Tracking Device (0:36)
5 54. Transfer of Human Energy into Reserve (1:56)
6 09. The Macra Terror (Incidental music excerpt) (0:31)
7 13. Yeti Control Sphere Move, Call and Answer (0:22)

Music from “Delta and the Bannermen” - this is probably a suite of tracks from 25th anniversary album ;)

And "Battle Theme" is a library track from "The Tommerow People Soundtrack" by Hodgson, Derbyshire & Vorhaus - it was posted here in the past :)

And If I may ask - why everyone wants that 8th Doc ost? This is composer cd remastered or what?

Thanks for the updates I did think that about delta but not being sure exactly what it will include I kept it there. Interesting about battle theme. Thanks.

I can put that marvelous library release here if anyone wants it (four tracks from Inferno, including one used again in CiS + Dudley main theme & superb 60's electronic music) ;)

And that with Delta can be just a guess ;)

Well, I want the Eighth Doctor TV Movie music because of it being the full thing and because some of the tracks have only been released on the DVD isolated music, with various sound effects still present, meaning not completely clean... (And I hope that these tracks will finally be getting a completely clean release)

I for one would consider it worth it just for the Dudley Simpson material, and the extended suite from Revenge of the Cybermen (over a minute longer than the one we got in the 4 disc set)

Further to my tangential daydreaming suggestions before, and with some of the truly excellent work being done here, maybe we *should* do our own rival versions? With a few notable exceptions, there are clean versions of some form or other of everything that exists. Whether the 'by composer' box sets, or the themed compilations. With DrMatt doing all the full things unbeatably well, and the lovely suites people have been doing, there's a gap in the fan labour market for 'releases' of a different hue!

Here's a list of classic stories that have full existing scores that are only in the ether as excerpts or not at all. Obviously the Glynn Trial stuff is still largely only in cassette quality. And I'm not an expert on the stock ones like some here are.

The Invasion (only partially unreleased)
Revenge Of The Cybermen
Shada (video)
Four To Doomsday
Black Orchid
Time-Flight
The Twin Dilemma
Timelash
Terror Of The Vervoids
Delta And The Bannermen

That's surprisingly few gaps now, considering. And at least what I assume is the complete remainder of the Dudley Simpson tapes will be free soon.

The situation with The Invasion is a very interesting one. Does anyone actually know just how much music was composed for this story? The PASB documents are confusing to say the least. All episodes have 4 minutes of Don Harper music recorded according to the PASB's and several episodes have as much as 4 minutes of Brian Hodgson 'music' (I'm assuming that some of those minutes are special sound). Now it's clearly not 4 minutes of new Don Harper music every episode so how much is it? there was talk in the '90's of 20 minutes of music recorded for the story but I just don't know. Does anyone know?

The only way to tell with The Invasion is to get an episode rip and compare it to what exists clean. It also strikes me that some of the DVD gallery suite is in fact dubbed from the episodes themselves, so it's possible that only some of it exists and equally possible that we do indeed have every existing clean cue on release.

D'oh I had the information all the time. According to Mark Ayres - This adventure was scored from a library of cues by composer Don Harper (a master tape containing 31 cues, a total of around - contrary to reports elsewhere - 20 minutes of music, was prepared). Brian Hodgson provided some additional "cybernetic" sounds to glue the story together and two are featured here, both in truncated form (the "Cyber Invasion" builds and holds for 8 minutes on the master tape!).
This statement is from Mark's annotated notes to Doctor Who at the Radiophonic Workshop Vol. 1 so I think it's fairly safe to assume we haven't got all the cues. Why not release this in it's entirety?

Doctor Who: Warriors' Gate
Soundtrack by Peter Howell
Special 2xCD Revisited Edition

Well, after the disappointing 11 CD track list not revealing a suite from this story that could have helped me isolate the final cue, here is the final edition of this soundtrack.

CD1 has been my most work-heavy score to date, eliminating all spurious bursts of 'Banqueting Music' that were mixed into other cues - except for 'Time Slip' where it is incorporated into the main soundtrack with added reverse reverb effects. (For those of you who like random bursts of Banqueting Music, you have the music cues disc, where I have put track changes in wherever it occurs.) Two main soundtrack bleeds (both during 'The Secret of the Gateway') and an original recording fault (2'50 into 'Gundan Attack') have been fixed. 'Mass Attraction' has been given a more distinct natural end (instead of the strings fading out forever) as well as a few other tweaks here and there. [N.B. I only did the final few fixes today, so this replaces all pre-release and proof-check copies, most of which also had 2 sound effects missing.]

Thanks to all of you who have helped out on this one with your proof-listening and suggestions (mainly "Get rid of those annoying snatches of Banqueting Music in tracks X, Y & Z!") notably Richard Baker who is proving invaluable with his very keen ears, eyes, and a knowledge of DW music even keener than mine!

CASTROVALVA FIX

I've also put together a small fix for the first (regeneration recap) track of Castrovalva CD1, extending the end of the last chord to bring it more in line with what was heard on TV, minus the opening theme intro scream (previously, I cut it short and wasn't happy with it at all). This FIX (https://mega.co.nz/#!vIYiHYZS!OJnXGjxYccbxNOPTI0vnZFBxSTEYiYwooOmTGHD cizI) fits all - with MP3, FLAC, CUE and JPG replacement files.

Yes - but some other albums will be getting minor updates: Meglos & Full Circle will be expanded to include material on the official release and not on the iso-score (don't get excited - we are talking mere seconds here!); any albums that include a music suite from the pre/proceeding story that don't have an introductory except will get one; Remembrance of the Daleks and The Sea Devils may well get 2xCD releases - as they stand, they are both unmixed.

The original is 4:01 long. So perhaps one section is removed so the ending is reinstated. I Hope so then we can just cut the 2 together for a complete track from beginning to end.

I have been tempted to do those myself but all the editing of the tracks to be as they appear in the actual episodes has been pretty time consuming for my "Era" collections so I'm shying away from that kind of project until I am done with the "Era" collections.

Speaking of those... Hartnell & Troughton are advancing nicely. Tom Baker seems to be shaping up as well. I haven't really worked on Pertwee much yet.

Davison - Tennant are DONE. Finalized.

I need to figure out a way to get Day Of The Doctor and Time Of The Doctor suites pulled together still or I would've gone ahead and completed Smith. ;)

Radiophonic Workshop: In Conversation and in Concert - 11th April 2014 (http://radiophonicworkshop2014.co.uk/)

In Concert and in Conversation - the Radiophonic Workshop

Celebrating the Electronic Sound Wizards behind Doctor Who

On Friday 11th April Chichester University’s Department of Media celebrates the Radiophonic Workshop with a day of interviews, lectures, talks and panels, culminating in a rare opportunity to see the Workshop perform live.

Renowned media experts and seminal electronic musicians will be joining original BBC Radiophonic Workshop members Peter Howell, Roger Limb, Dr Dick Mills and Paddy Kingsland, as well as archivist Mark Ayres, to honour and assess the Workshop’s half century odyssey into electronica, including their seminal work on Doctor Who. In the evening there will be a concert in the University’s 230 capacity Showroom Theatre, a unique opportunity to get up close to one of the most influential outfits in the history of electronica, and a chance to hear the eternally popular Doctor Who theme played by those who made it, alongside multiple other Who-related treats.

With their impressive back catalogue being comprehensively reissued on vinyl and CD, an album of new compositions, Electricity, on the way, and a spectacular live show featuring archive footage from film and TV spanning their extraordinary 55 year career, the rebirth of this pioneering group is something not to miss.

About the Workshop

Founded in 1958 by Desmond Briscoe and Daphne Oram, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop was home to a maverick group of experimental composers, sound engineers and musical innovators. In a series of small studios within the labyrinthine corridors of the BBC Maida Vale complex, the Workshop explored new ways of using - and abusing - sound.
Drawing on the principles of Musique Concrte, found sounds, early electronics, oscillators, handmade synths and tape loops the Workshop created the otherworldly soundtrack to some of BBC television and radio’s most iconic programs. Delia Derbyshire’s iconic Doctor Who theme, based on a composition by Ron Grainer and created with Dick Mills, is still a high water mark for British electronic music five decades after it was recorded. Peter Howell was behind the ‘regeneration’ of the theme in 1980, where he updated the original with modern synthesizer technology.
The Workshop created a plethora of sound and music for Doctor Who for its entire original run, indeed Dick Mills has more credits on the programme – over 350 - than any other person. High water marks include not only instantly recognizable sounds such as the TARDIS materialising and the voice of the Daleks, but also music from particular episodes, such as ‘The Caves of Androzani’ and ‘The Sea Devils’.

Some of this material has gone on to be released in album form, to great acclaim among both Who fans and connoisseurs of electronica. Indeed, the influence of the Radiophonic Workshop on popular music has been profound. From The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd through to many of today's most successful electronic artists and DJs (who have ensured the Radiophonic Workshop’s albums are among the world’s most sampled recorded works), their legacy continues to grow as new generations of musicians discover their rich back catalogue. Even the resurrected Doctor Who regularly doffs its cap to the Workshop and Mark Gatiss made sure we glimpsed them at work during his lovingly realised 50th anniversary drama, An Adventure in Time and Space, based on Doctor Who’s launch and early years.

Now, more than 15 years after the Workshop was decommissioned, original members Peter Howell, Roger Limb, Dr Dick Mills, Paddy Kingsland and archivist Mark Ayres are back working together. Variously described by the music press as the ‘electronic Buena Vista Social Club’ (The Observer) and ‘The British Kraftwerk’ (NME) the Radiophonic
Workshop are currently enjoying a well-deserved renaissance.

Members of the Workshop will be interviewed extensively, speaking about their relationship to Doctor Who throughout the day, and there will be a special in-conversation between Workshop archivist Mark Ayres and Dick Fiddy of the BFI entitled ‘The Sound Behind The Sofa’, discussing the Workshop’s contribution to Doctor Who. Alongside the Workshop themselves, guests at the event include author and broadcaster Dr Matthew Sweet, who also wrote Doctor Who audio plays ‘The Year of the Pig’ and ‘The Magic Mousetrap’; the electronic duo Walls, who will be talking about their new album based on Workshop founder Daphne Oram’s sonic archive; Gary Numan collaborator and biographer Steve Malins, and members of seminal electronic bands Cabaret Voltaire and Tunng. There will also be an after-party featuring underground electro-pop fetishists Vile Electrodes.

Hi everyone -- first off can I say what a fantastic forum this is: fans of not only Doctor Who but soundtracks too! This may be my favourite place on the internet right now.

I'm here to ask if anyone knows where I might find the music used in the eighth Doctor's audios; I know that Storm Warning to Minuet in Hell has been posted, and some of his later stuff (maybe Lucie Miller?) but I haven't come across anything else.

I know it's a rather esoteric request, but hey, this seems to be the place for esotericism! I'm especially interested in the rest of his first season, if by any chance anyone can help.

(also, esotericism, what a flipping word)

As I see, recons upload "Space Invaded: BBC Space Themes", so I ask.
There is another compilation with BBC sf music called "BBC Space Themes", released in 1978.

I have a poor vinyl rip from a long time and I'm wondering if anyone here has better copy and can share it with us :)

I'm afraid that I don't own the series 3 boxset, so am unable to rip the music for The Runaway Bride, sorry... If I do ever get it, that's the first thing I'll do.

Do you mean this...Fifty Years of Doctor Who at the BBC (Dr Who): Amazon.co.uk: Anthony Head, Elisabeth Sladen: Books (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fifty-Years-Doctor-Who-BBC/dp/1471305082)

If you do, sorry I don't have it?

This is simply a box containing the Doctor Who at the BBC individul CD releases. I believe they have all been posted over at the Doctor Who Audio Drama thread (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/doctor-who-audio-drama-thread-85235) at some point or other. I'm sure some kind soul will help you there.

I didn't miss The Runaway Bride. I made an add on to my Series 3 Selection featuring music from Runaway Bride, Human Nature, Family Of Blood & Blink. I couldn't find the disc with the 3 missing episodes from the list.

If anyone knows where the track called 'Zero' from the 11th Hour
goes, please let me know as I'm terrible at recognising music and placing it. For all I know it could be on there as a rip already!

Also unplaced is the track 'Impossible Choice' on this compilation, someone must be good at putting music in order, can you help??

Can anyone re-up this for me? I somehow deleted my copy. :-/

There is another compilation with BBC sf music called "BBC Space Themes", released in 1978.
http://www.discogs.com/Various-BBC-Space-Themes/release/946510
I have a poor vinyl rip from a long time and I'm wondering if anyone here has better copy and can share it with us :)

This (https://mega.co.nz/#!SNYmkQCC!IJ3XfXyn3YeOhXgUwNdjmoK_i4BKfMyUUNr5lnT u1YQ) is, for the most part, a decent vinyl rip (although the first 20 seconds or so of the first track are fairly crackly and Peter Howell's The Astronauts sounds quite ropy in parts). Alongside the usual suspects (Doctor Who, Quatermass, the full-length Blake's 7 theme with its odd calypso break), the album includes one of Dudley's lesser-remembered SF themes (Moonbase 3), the utterly gorgeous Journey Into Space (a 1950s BBC radio serial) and a shamelessly liberty-taking rendition of the Star Trek theme which has to be heard to be believed.

This is exactly the same copy I have in my collection. But there is a better version of cover iamge, so thank you anyway :)

Yeah, tried that already. Couldn't even find anyone even mentioning them, which was weird. Unless the release date info on the net is completely wrong. I've got 2/28/12 for Series 6 and 11/5/13 for Series 7.

I've discovered and fixed a fault on the 'Enlightenment' score - one of the bonus tracks ('Breakfast Time') was missing the first 2 seconds. The fix (and more comprehensive pre-gaps) has affected the some track times, so the fix includes all tracks from after the closing theme, replacement CD art where necessary/improved, and LOG/CUE/M3U files for the FLAC.

Enlightenment Fix: FLAC (https://mega.co.nz/#!ad50HKQL!GSfwMBtQhhjeHuBvUYQNxTd_H7ZTweHHuH88DAn doF0) / MP3 (https://mega.co.nz/#!eMwyFCTD!URKw_iZBrnfX91oK0hG42CizuIIuciEcpu7Cs5v wpdY)

I've buckled to the fan collector within and will also be getting the 11 CD set - with the intention of designing some nice jewel case CD art from scans - for the many people here with more sense than me who will be making do with a FLAC copy!

The scene at the end where the Doctor tells Reinette to pick a star, right before 'Madame de Pompadour' plays. However I came across something interesting. I heard a piece in that download that was definitely not in the episode, and was near the end of the playlist - I guess it was an alternative piece originally used for that scene, it sounded beautiful!

I usually hedge and say nearly, or almost, or expanded. Unless I am damn sure. That way there is wiggle room, ya know? The set gives us a good idea of what a complete episode's score from Gold actually sounds like. Too bad some "special" episodes never got this type of treatment.

Could I please ask that when you do scan the artwork and create the jewel case CD art, that you at least include a reasonable dpi copy of the original artwork for each CD. The glimpses I've seen of each of the silhouette portrait art of each of the eleven Doctors is amazing, so it'd be a shame not to have a clean copy as well! :)

Is there any one out there who can provide the order in which cues were used in "The Web Planet" and "Galaxy 4"? I have all the individual pieces but its hard work to sit and listen to each episode and then bounce between each file of music to see which one each cue is and where exactly it is trimmed. If anybody knows of a list with the tracks in order ro is willing to provide me with one... I would be ETERNALLY grateful. @ Gwylock1 and Eagleshooter6,

I don't appear to have Drumdramatics No. 11, sorry. Can someone else help us with that? My pleasure to share the other requests:

Off Center (http://www.sendspace.com/file/hircxj) and Tranquil Scene by Moneta Eagles (http://www.sendspace.com/file/bx7khw)

R

Thank You!

Download DWSM023 Robert Farnon Drumdramatics no 2.mp3 from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way (http://www.sendspace.com/file/de454g)

I've got it down as Drumdramatics No. 2. 11 is sometimes used as two rather than eleven hence confusion etc blah blah blah. Stumbled across this on a legitimate site somewhere which likes Farnon's music.

Thank You for clarifying and uploading!

Regarding "Off Center"

Isn't there more in that album? Those are just the tracks from Tomb of the Cybermen. I probably should have specified! xD

These are the tracks I had to hand. I do own this album (I may even have two copies!), so I will have a look and get back to you. I think the other tracks aren't DW related, so will move our deliberations to a PM once I've checked.
