To get back to the Murray Gold debate: I have no idea who Murray Gold is, or Blake Neely. I've never actually googled them to find out, tho' someday I suppose I will. Not the way I've become fascinated with a Dimitri Tiomkin, say, not ever having paid any attention to him until a couple months ago, finally coming to recognize that he was probably the pre-Goldsmith Goldsmith who could do just about anything and do it really, really well. But I sure do enjoy the Who and Arrow music. Both series have terrific soundtracks that really, truly do stand out from just about anything else on the tube. Are Gold or Neeley Tiomkin or Goldsmith? I don't think so. They're both solid, workman-like composers who get the job done and get it done well. Based on Who alone, I'd put Gold at precisely the same level as Howard Shore, who I greatly admire and whose work I have actively sought out for years. Shore gets the job done and usually gets the job done well. Is Shore a Tiomkin or a Goldsmith? Not even close. LOTR seems a brilliant inspired aberration. I don't know the story of the filming of The Hobbit but it seems fraught with ill-feeling and tension and I have to admit, having listened to 6 disks of Hobbit music, for me there's just nothing there worth listening to. Gold's I Am the Doctor is a much more rousing theme than anything Shore came up with for The Hobbit (including the mountains/forest/something nature theme that everyone seems to love) and I think Gold could have written a much better soundtrack for The Hobbit than what Shore produced. Both Gold and Shore have to be given credit for what they are: excellent workmanlike composers who (usually) get the job done.
I've watched Dr Who since the first episode and the show has evolved. The William Hartnell "music" is still my favorite. You can hear in the music over the years the change in the show's direction. The Hartnell music was eerie and mysterious and even frightening to reflect the tone of much of the show in those early days. The reboot music through Matt Smith reflects mostly a fun carnival ride through excitement and adventure. Those are the real high points of Who musically. In between, the music continues to reflect the changing Drs and the changing tones of the stories, with mixed success. Remember that before the reboot, DW had no budget at all and they did what they could with what they had. Which was usually excellent writing and a trust in the viewer's imaginations and willingness to suspend disbelief and ignore the creakiness of what they were seeing. Of course, post-Lucas audiences can't manage that anymore, so production values have to be really, really high to keep kids watching. And that's been reflected in the kinds of stories and the visuals and in the music. Gold has raised the bar considerably. There are a couple Christmas special soundtracks that I really hate but other than those, I think his work has been great - varied, often moving and often tremendously exciting. The producers have been really lucky to have found him and we're really lucky that Who is being merchandised so mercenarily that we're getting multiple disks for every new Dr. But just imagine how it could have been if they had gone with one of the post-Shirley Walker school of soundtrack writers? Eight or ten cds of Zimmerish or DeSplatish white noise? (Obviously not my favorite form of aural filler.)
So Neely does The Flash, too? Is there a soundtrack? Oh, boy!
Desplat is white noise?
Murray Gold on the same level as Howard Shore?
Howard Shore less than Jerry Goldsmith.
I think I might faint.

My favorites from series 8 are as follows:
Tiny TARDIS
Smaller on the Outside TARDIS
Love is a Promise (I am eagerly waiting for a completely clean version of this)
NASA is that Way
Forest of London
Fear Makes Companions of Us All
12's general action theme though... Idk why but it's just not on par with the rest for me

That one is good. But I think Murray decided to make the woodwind instruments louder than the beat, which I don't like for some reason. Or it felt overused

the 12th doctor's main theme has been used in every episode other than Robot Of Sherwood, Listen & In The Forest Of The Night. Its been quite reused.
Both I Am The Doctor & 12th Doctor's theme have been overused in their first episodes. Except perhaps Murray took word from fans saying that IATD was overused and annoying and created a theme thats just as good but more subtle in terms of instruments used.

Alas! There's no central page in this thread where all the active links are kept.
I'm looking for complete scores for Cybermen, The Tenth Planet through Silver Nemesis.
The Tenth Planet
The Moonbase
The Tomb of the Cybermen
The Wheel in Space
The Invasion
Revenge of the Cybermen
Earthshock
The Five Doctors
Attack of the Cybermen
Silver Nemesis
I've seen "The Moonbase" here recently and downloaded it. I have The Tenth Planet CD, and isolated scores from "Nemesis", "Attack", "Doctors" and "Earthshock." I have a "Tomb" version but not sure if it's complete. I know "Revenge" is not. Not sure if "Invasion" that I saw here recently is. I know "Wheel in Space" is on one of the Dr. Who at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop CDs, but not sure if it's complete.
Have I got it all correct?

There is no specifically composed music for Tenth Planet through to Wheel.
Tenth Planet - the CD is not wholly accurate, neither are the PasBs. I don't think Blast Off! appears in the story.
Moonbase - I believe that the version posted recently is complete.
Tomb - This one's quite complicated but, essentially, the one posted recently contains a mix of sourced library music (some of which has been adapted to fit the durations and tempos of those used in the story) and episode rips where the source of the original is unclear/ has added effects or both. I think it's 'complete' and a great piece of work!
Wheel - an album is yet to appear on here. I posted the library track by Monica Liter a while back, and there has been a single track episode rip of music and effects. There was at least one effects track on the 30 Years of the Radiophonic CD. Haven't spotted anything else.
Invasion - several tracks from several sources have appeared on here - don't miss Gwylock1's excellent The Invasion Goes Stereo! I don't know how complete things are. Some tracks were re-recorded for Cold Worlds so they're not an exact episode match.
Revenge - A single track episode rip has appeared and I posted 6 tracks that were re-recorded by Blyton. Strangely, the iso score did not appear on the DVD so we don't have the rest or the Howell tracks for this. We can only hope for an official release.
Earthshock - Attack: See the much missed DrMatt's excellent releases!
Silver Nemesis - DrMatt released the iso score to this. In addition, there were some (poorer quality) alternate tracks that I had sourced (including that year's season trailer music which was recorded in the same session). I can't remember if DM included these. I still have the original WAV I supplied DM with if anyone wants to have a go at remastering and make the extra tracks sound better, but it's beyond my ken. Here's the anniversary season trailer in MP3 so you can hear what it's like:

EDITED TO ADD: I think you fare a little better if you go for Dalek stories... :-)

It's _BBC at the Radiophonic Workshop Volume 2_. Like _The Krotons_ it has no music as such, just electronic sound disguised as music. I wouldn't call it SF/X exactly, e.g. "Zoe Floating through space" since there's no sound in space. But that's what passed for music.
Invasion - several tracks from several sources have appeared on here - don't miss Gwylock1's excellent The Invasion Goes Stereo! I don't know how complete things are. Some tracks were re-recorded for Cold Worlds so they're not an exact episode match.

Momaru - as recons says, it's a bit complicated. I did Tomb as two separate downloads - the first one is just the tracks that we have complete, clean versions of:
Tomb of the Cybermen (
http://www.mediafire.com/download/rhayjnlmcib37d3/Tomb_of_the_Cybermen.7z)
The second one was mostly episode rips of cues that were unidentified or had radiophonic overdubs, along with a couple of remade clean stings, etc:
TOMB - Missng Tracks (
http://www.mediafire.com/download/vwo8708hvitg4hn/TOMB_-_Missng_Tracks.zip)
And this older post details how all the bits fit together:
http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/doctor-who-collection-all-soundtracks-72196/253.html#post2674293
- You can replace Eric Siday's "Galaxy" from the second download with the complete version from the "Ultra Sonic Perception" CD.

Do you know, Id read the track description of that Drumdramatics 6 cue and wondered if it might be The One. Don't know how I missed your previous upload but belated thanks now!
Yup, LPC 781-785 contains the 78s that were originally issued as C 781, C 782, C 783, C 784 and C785.
I love typing out lists.

Someone please tell me what that French guy is singing in Tenth Planet episode one.
Not that you'd guess from his accent, but I think he's supposed to be Italian. He's probably singing La donna mobile, but I might be getting confused with Pertwee in Inferno.
Anyway, as Tenth Planet Week rumbles on here at the Shrine, here are my earlier uploads now transplanted to Mega:
https://mega.co.nz/#!IQ0TEABD!VcJlnTkjcOFeVGe0pKZI1ZLc8uTj7v1pYWzDKqf B9LA

The first one is nearly everything, including a load of tracks fron the PasBs that don't actually appear - Drumdramatics 10 / Blast Off, etc. Then there's a smattering of related tracks - the other part of Music For technology, the rest of Drama in Miniature and a few other cues by Douglas Gamley that sound like they were part of the same session as the TP tracks ('cos I like that sort of thing).
The second one contains Space Adventures 2 speeded up by nearly 20% - which is how it appears in all the Cyber-film sequences (it appears at its usual speed only twice in the story - once when the Cybermen enter the base in part 2 and then when the Cybermen die and crumple into a telesnap in Part 4). There's also a now-redundant rip of the sound of Michael Craze breaking his collarbone, which you can replace with gnawingagony's copy of the xylophone thing from Drumdramtics 6.
Then round it off with Momaru's closing theme + computer chatter (good thinking, Momaru!) and you should have everything.
I can't even open these files on this laptop, so if anyone wants to consolidate everything into a single package then be my guest!

Do you even know if the studio sound track even exists? Five Doctors lucked out that the studio sessions were saved in broadcast quality, and most of the other 5.1 mixes come from McCoy's era, where most stories have surviving '71 edits. I don't see how Androzani would even have session tracks extant at all.

Well in that case, no, probably not. When they went back to Remembrance for the Davros boxset, they opted to splash on doing a 5.1 mix (even two versions of it with and without the Beatles source music for copyright reasons). They didn't do a 5.1 mix on Androzani when they had the chance to with the first Revisitations set, and you can bet they would have done it if they could given how revered the story is. Then again, there is unedited studio footage for the regeneration at least, and wasn't there an extra where they put Christopher Gable interview audio over shots of him in the studio? Was that broadcast quality or was it timecoded VHS like the footage of the Castrovalva regeneration?
Who knows.

Thanks for this, Funky1&2. I'm still trying to compile the definitive version for us, but I've run into some queries, all caused by the production staff, no doubt!
First question then. I have two tracks, one called 'Drama in Miniature Pt.1 (1) - Circle of Danger - Wind & Percussion Ensemble; conducted by Robert Farnon (John Denis)' and the other 'Drama in Miniature Pt.2 (1) - Time For The Reaper - Wind & Percussion Ensemble; conducted by Robert Farnon (John Denis)'. Which of these is actually in the programme?
Second question. Is 'Drumdramatics No 6 - Xylophone gathering speed' mentioned further up the thread (previously labelled UNKNOWN CUE) the same as 'Drumdramatics 6(d') in Funky1&2's list? Is there another track that was a 'ker-plunk' and, if so, which track is it?
Third question. IIRC Momaru lists both 'Music For Technology part 1' and 'Music For Technology part 2' as appearing. The PasB seems to suggest it's part 2. Funky1&2's list suggests it's part 1. Can anyone confirm whether both or either actually appear in the episode?
Finally, what is the source for the track labelled 'computer chatter', the sound effect played over the opening and closing themes in the story?
---------- Post added at 11:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:27 AM ----------

Hello!
Time for the Reaper’s the right one. It’s the only one of the four “Drama in Miniatures” that was used in the show.
Yup – “Xylophone gathering speed” is the right one (although that’s a truncated version of the track description rather than an official title). It’s definitely part of Drumdramatics 6 and I think it’s the fourth one. (I’m at work once again and can’t check the album sleeve – but you could just have a peek at gnawingagony’s download to be sure.)
I think the full description is something like “Xylophone gathering speed into crash”, or something like that. I’ll check the sleeve when I get home.
Drumdramatics 7(a) is the “ker plunk” from Part 4, and IIRC the full track description is definitely “Vibes and Tymps: Crash”
It’s definitely Part 1 that’s used – the one from the old Space Adventure tape/CD and, indeed, the crackly Tenth Planet CD. I’ve never spotted Part 2 in the episode, not sure why it’s on Momaru’s list.
Finally, what is the source for the track labelled 'computer chatter', the sound effect played over the opening and closing themes in the story?
There’s a snippet at the end of 10th Planet 4 on the DVD (can’t remember which version of the ep – possibly both), but the longer extract in my download came from the VHS release.

I remember when I went to the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff that they had a sound and visual area exploring the visual effects and sound design & music and they had 3 headphones which played the various stems of the Doctor Who XI theme (Series 5 - 7A)
One played just the bassline
One played just the orchestra & electronic elements
One played just the bassline & electronic elements.
and the bassline only one sounds totally different to the one heard in the actual XI theme. it had more of a powerful punch to it. it's a shame there isn't a way to record it or post it. doing that would land anyone in huge trouble. But they sounded quite interesting and having just the bassline or orchestra only would open up sooooo many opportunities for Doctor Who Theme Remixes.

I remember receiving an e-mail a while back from someone who worked with the Doctor Who sound/music design and they said a piece of music had leaked out from Series 2, but cannot be found anymore. I am still hell-bent on finding that track.

Wouldn't be the master tapes for Series 2 would it. a complete score for Girl In The Fireplace exists. And various tracks from The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit also exist. Thats about it. Some of us were hoping more complete scores for Series 2 episodes would pop up but sadly that seems to be out of the question these days.

No MrBlorx said he was told a Series 2 track had leaked online. So I assumed it was the master tapes since they contain series 2 tracks and the only ones that exist to this day. I wasn't asking for the tapes to be re posted.

I'd like to compile the "best of" for the Cyberman stories. Because The Tenth Planet has so little music (only 16 minutes!) I'll be using all of it, but I think the rest of the stories have more music. Which are the best tracks for the rest? From "The Moonbase" to "Silver Nemesis" I mean.

I've dipped into The Enemy of the World. This is a good piece of work. I've got it on in the background as I type and i'm enjoying it. (I had to track number it as it didn't seem to have any ID3 track numbers, but it wasn't that difficult as you had titled the tracks well).
Just out of interest, can I ask whether your edits are from the same three albums of Bartok tracks as the original eps.
Yeah same recordings apparently, I did not source them I was given them.
I'm afraid I don't think these are the right versions, they sound very similar but there are some subtle differences. I'm working on editing all the cues from the versions I've got, I could upload a sample if you'd like to compare?

Not saying you missed anything. The music in "The Moonbase" is much different from that in "The Tenth Planet." There's much more, for one thing. There's a lot of atmosphere -- music that's played low under dialogue.

I see that there was actually some stock music used in Marco Polo! Since the recorded Tristram Cary music is lost, we can have at least some music for the serial, if we can find “At The Palace Gates”: BBC Lib No 14511 (Unknown) Played by Louis P.T. Chen and “A Merry Old Gentleman’s Song”: BBC Lib No 14510 (Unknown) Played by Louis P.T. Chen
You know, Tristram Cary was actually going to mail me his sheet music for Marco Polo, but at the last minute reneged. The sheet music is now in an Australian university library (Sydney?) just waiting for someone to make it available to patrons!

Is there an echo in here? :-)
Seriously, I totally grasp your enthusiasm for this early music, whether it's Cary or Simpson's specially composed stuff, or early library music. It's very atmospheric stuff.
Occasionally, original BBC Library records turn up on Ebay, but I've not spotted anything to do with DW since I've been watching out - some years, now - and I guess that any that have been used in the programme are in the hands of private collectors. [If I were more cynical, I might even hazard a guess at a particular collector... but enough of that].
This thread has been a total revelation in terms of this pursuit and has brought forth a lot of enjoyable material that we might once have thought impossible to hear. But, I'm resigned to the fact that the chances are there is a limit. Are things like the original score to An Unearthly Child or any of the lost 2nd/3rd/4th Doctor Simpsons ever going to mysteriously turn up one day? It seems unlikely.
Things do turn up from time to time- like those two tracks from Reign (last year?) - but for the rest, we can only hope that talented individuals, both official like Mark Ayres or the unofficial like Gwylock and Impossible Ego and others, are sufficiently motivated to authentically recreate stuff.

02-16-2015, 05:13 PM
As far as I can tell, the only way we're going to hear any Norman Kay or Richard Rodney Bennett is if Healthcliff Blair or some other bloke re-records it. That was my plan with Marco Polo, since I have a friend who can run a keyboard pretty well.

I do have them, but I can't remember if the person that sent them to me gave me permission to share them or not. (Some people share privately but not publicly - it's a more common position than you might think).
In order to respect them and their wishes, could I ask that they contact me if they have any objection to me sharing these, or share the tracks themselves. I'm afraid I don't have a record of who you are to credit you, either! The unfortunate fact is that people come and go on this forum, and they may well have gone never to return. I'll give this seven days beyond which I'll upload unless otherwise instructed. Or, interested parties could search this thread to see if these have been shared and there is still a viable link.

You might as well as I've no idea when my version will be ready.
Apart from the obvious stuff, I've made a "repaired" version of Anaesthesia - combining the frequencies from the vinyl copy with the German download version, as with Hypnosis; I'd also found a good clean version of Conflict 2 from OOTU. I've made a looped version of Space Agitato to match the TX version; then there's the unidentified scanner / planet music and an equally mysterious echoey piano glissando in part 2. And that's all rounded off with the gong from the final scene (has anyone checked if this is a library gong or Tristram Cary's gong wheeled out a week early?)
But as I say, I don't know when I'll be able to upload it.
Btw - the version of Asyndeton in War Machines is different to the one we have - after the main screech, the quieter drummy bit loops, which it doesn't on the Space Adventure version.
Sometimes I even bore myself...

As far as I can tell, the only way we're going to hear any Norman Kay or Richard Rodney Bennett is if Healthcliff Blair or some other bloke re-records it. That was my plan with Marco Polo, since I have a friend who can run a keyboard pretty well.
Actually, since the set was already posted without it, I can tell you- I originally meant to do a recreation of most of the Marco Polo score for impossibleego's Anniversary compilation, but my contact who was transcribing it vanished without a trace, and the whole thing had to be called off :(

So until the Beeb releases the soundtrack for "The Mind of Evil", the only music from that is the source music "The Devil's Triangle." It's in episode 3. Has anyone any idea where in that episode? It's apparently only 17 seconds of a long song, so I'd like to trim it down.

See above! It is very unlikely that the Beeb would countenance such an endeavour given the similar problems when other 'crowdfunded' projects have been offered to them. However, if anyone fancies having a go, I'll support it. In my view, though, these things are better 'off book'.

I'll have to check, but I'm not sure this is the only track from this story. I think at least one other appears on 21 Years of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. There's possibly another somewhere.

Where did you get the information for Fury From The Deep/Seeds of Death from?
I put up an album for Blyton's stuff for Revenge of the Cybermen - it is a re-recording, though, I think. None of Powell's stuff for this story is on there. I think there are just 6 tracks.
The Invasion has been up recently, and we've discussed what there is of Mind of Evil - I think you were trying to edit the source track to size? I'm not surprised as it's 11 mins long, but it's an enjoyable listen.
Although there's no score for Black Orchid available, the library music used is available (20's dance music).
Paradise Towers hasn't appeared on here, but a composer promo of the complete score was released in the 80s/90s. I've tracked down copies of other composer promos such as Time and the Rani and Silver Nemesis, but never this one, so it's a bit of a holy grail. I did suggest in my limited knowledge of such matters that there might be a way of extracting the score from the DVD, but nobody seemed very interested... probably because it wouldn't work :-)
Edited to reflect the happy truth :-)

Rats. I'd heard that the track between parts 2 and 3 ("Out of the Darkness") occurs twice, the second time in the recap in episode 3, and that at the end of part 2 it segues into the ending title. Since I'm dividing the serials into episodes, I'd like those two tracks, and I heard that they were like that on the isolated score, but apparently not. :-(

Several tracks were miss-identified and have been retitled; 'Clyde Figures It Out' was previously titled 'Warriors of Kudlak Track' and 'Mr Smith's Origin' was previously titled 'Mr Smith's Gone Bad'. 'Off to University' has been retitled to 'Luke Leaves' from the Sarah Jane Adventures trailer maker, which is most likely the original source for the track. It also now includes rips of what I've guessed 'Clyde and Ashley's Mum' and 'Mr Smith's Gone Bad' to be.)

I know chris666eden has posted this before (sorry Chris), but here's a much higher quality recording with the entire track, in FLAC.

I didn't realise that gnawingagony and myself nattering was quite so impenetrable!
It's a lovely cue and it pops up throughout Moonbase - including part 1 - and Tomb. No one knows what it is. The radiophonic masters for those stories are both missing which scarcely helps matters. It's possibly a library track that's not been recorded on the PasBs (of which there are many in The Moonbase in particular). And bearing in mind the double-helping of tracks from Keys of Marinus, it's also possible that it's a recycled radiophonic track from some earlier show.
And I want a copy of it.

Didn't know Shada was on DVD. I have the VHS myself. I recently came across a version with animation for the missing scenes, which is why I bring it up.

That would be I A N L E V E N E 's version. Not worth the hype if you ask me, unsuitable voice actors and uninspiring animation.

I think Tom Baker's stand-in is pretty good. So is Lalla Ward's, and, since it isn't an impression of David Brierly, then it must actually be John Leeson.
But since that's the only animated one of which I know, it's worth watching!
*Or was that supposed to be John Leeson? and when it was first released on VHS they got the wrong voice.

It's a personal observation, but Tom Baker's stand-in needs a slightly lower register. Maybe it could have been subtly altered with software to achieve a more believable result.
That is Lalla Ward's voice.
All things considered, I prefer this version to the narrated version.
(Some of the other projects in the trailer on YouTube, though, look far worse, and I didn't care for the Mission animation at all. I see Downtime is going to be released. I wonder if it'll have the Medic 7 bits added on or as deleted scenes).

Please release "Doctor Who: The Underwater Menace" on DVD!
The Underwater Menace is the final scheduled DVD in the classic Doctor Who range that has yet to see release, and recent enquiries have show that it has now been removed from release schedules.
The serial is the earliest surviving story featuring Patrick Troughton's version of the Doctor, and its earliest surviving episode (Episode 2) has not yet been officially released on any format following its rediscovery in 2011. Both surviving episodes have been fully restored visually by the Restoration Team, and require only two weeks' further work to complete the audio restoration. DVD extras have already been produced by the Restoration Team, including a "making of" documentary called "Fishy Tales". How the missing Episodes 1 and 4 would be presented (if at all) is undetermined.
Please help to show BBC Worldwide that there is still support for The Underwater Menace on DVD!

Quoted for truth, brother.
I have been following up a few leads. I really can't help thinking it is something similar to all those Freezing machine sounds from The Space Museum, some of which I am sure I heard on the sixth episode of A For Andromeda. Unless that turns out to be the musique concrete sadistic thing from Desmond Leslie.
I can't remember, but I'm sure I looked for possibilities through that Desmond Briscoe LP which you kindly pointed me to on You Tube, perhaps at a different speed. I found something close but it wasn't so. Then I gave up and cancelled several subscriptions to charity.
I can't think of anything from The Keys of Marinus which matches it.
What we need are the full LPs used for each track used in both Tomb and Moonbase, and see if it is on there. That's how I found Mexican Beat and the whoop whoop wheeep from The Space Museum, which you slowed down. It might even be a Tristram Cary, but I doubt that.
I remain yours,
The Mean GnawingAgony

The thing with “Swirly Atmospherics” (I’m still calling it that) that persuades me it’s library and not radiophonic is, and it pains me to say it, that it’s a bit too good. Absolutely nothing like yer bog standard “Rill at rest” or “Padbury Interior (Stationary)”. Sorry Brian. I would have guessed it was more in the style of Eric Siday, but then there’s only a handful of his tracks that we haven't heard now so the chances are slim. Similarly, it’s rather pleasant to listen to which rather rules Desmond Leslie out too.
Thinking along similar lines to yourself, I had high hopes for this:
http://www.discogs.com/Roberto-Gerhard-Electronic-usic/release/2159907
I’ve not got a copy, but some Googling (
http://www.robertogerhard.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/11-Duque.pdf) revealed that all eight of those tracks – including the DW ones – were actually culled from a couple of longer pieces from the following (which I do have):
Electronic Explorations From His Studio by Roberto Gerhard: Amazon.co.uk: Music (
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Electronic-Explorations-Studio-Roberto-Gerhard/dp/B00NBE64IE/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1424797676&sr=1-1)
No luck there, but I’m pleased to report it’s been successfully alarming my neighbours for the last few days. I shall be inflicting an 8-minute version of Asyndeton on you all in the near future.
I tried PM-ing the owner of the Desmond Leslie grail-disc on Discogs begging for a copy but they never replied. (Too busy dancing like a dervish to Sting Tintabuloid while touching himself, I expect. ‘Cos that’s what I’d do.)
What else? There are some more Listen, Move and Dance discs with Daphne Oram – she might possibly be worth a look:
http://www.discogs.com/artist/119005-Daphne-Oram
I think at least some of her stuff is available as downloads from Trunk Records. Not sure if you can listen to samples. (I bloody can’t BECAUSE COMPUTERS HATE ME.)
And I’ve just reminded myself: I’ve got a couple of CDs of stuff by Daphne Oram and Tristram Cary that someone did for me years ago. Will dig ‘em out and report back…

Before we get to the tracklists I want to point out that not ALL of these tracks are free of FX or "special sounds" but the bulk of them are (You might also hear some muffled dialogue here or there but THAT isn't that prevelant). For the earlier Doctors I chose stories with music available or stories whose FX were easily reduced or removed, this became very problematic during the UNIT era, lots of guns, slamming of doors and poor old Bessie running about. The sources used for these collections vary. If they are episode rips I have used the best possible versions available (for instance "Spearhead From Space"'s source was from my BluRay). Some of the files I used were posted here in this thread by various people (CGCJ, Amanda, Chris666eden, Recons, hybrid01, gwlock1, DrMatt1974 (although I had already ripped most of the Isolated Scores myself along the way), WhichDoctor?, gnawingagony, dragonOllie15 and many, many others along the way) so I want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has helped this project finally reach its completion many years after I had originally envisioned it (I actually started planning these in 2003!)
Obviously, not EVERY story is going to be represented but I feel these collections are a good sampling of the first 50 years.
As many of you know, I not only compiled this collection I mixed, arranged, mastered and conceived the entire thing. The artwork was created by me. This has been a true "labor of love". ;)
Now... what's that you say? You want to know what's on this collection? Oh, alright... If I MUST....

(Now to post this as a separate thread so others can see it too!)
EDIT: I just caught, thanks to hybrid01, that "The Colin Baker Era" is 4 minutes too long to burn to a compact disc. If you are inclined to burn these to a disc you can still burn "The Colin Baker Era" to a traditional disc if you simply remove the long versions of the theme arranged by Peter Howell and Dominic Glynn.
Thanks for the superb era collections. Is there larger versions of the covers available as when you enlarge the small versions the picture quality drops. Cheers.

A lot of my enjoyment of early Doctor Who came from the work of Barry Newbery (
http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2015/02/barry-newbery-1927-2015.html), the designer, who has just passed away. RIP.

Another person from my favourite era of Doctor Who gone... Soon there wont be any of the wonderful people who worked on Doctor Who at its beginning left alive... :'(

It is the way of things, my friend. What's important is that we honour and celebrate their work.

Question: how do you effectively isolate tracks? I'm thinking of messing with it a bit. All I know is that Audacity isn't THAT good at it.
Well, Audacity was good at it for a while until I bough Adobe Audition and Goldwave. If you're thinking about removing the center channel, Goldwave is the way to go, it's much better than the crap Audacity plugin. If you're messing with 5.1 mixes, Audacity is the way to go to split the tracks into 2 stereo ones, and then export those and then import them into Goldwave or Audition. Audition is great for the really advanced stuff, like eliminating precise frequencies and viewing the ever-so-great spectrogram log function.
If none of that made any sense, Audacity is the way to go.

Great thread. Each era of doctor who seems to have a unique sound so it's great to see them all. I always liked planet of fire for some reason, the music just seemed to fit with the alien race/planet.

No problem. Audition is amazing at creating 5.1 mixes too, you should check that out.
Whoever posted the "BBC Space Themes" record, I must thank you for getting me addicted to the Blake's 7 theme by Dudley Simpson...

That might have been me. I've got a few other versions somewhere, including an official disco version, if you like!

I've been lurking in this thread since... God, at least back when this thread had about 10-20 pages, and I've just realised something: has anyone ever discussed the score to Dimensions in Time? The Cybertech theme's been released on the band's self-titled album, but what about Keff's incidental music?
I mean obviously it's no great loss or anything (if you're lucky enough to have never seen DiT, the music's pretty standard McCulloch fare), but if you're here, then you're doing so to identify and track down ultra-obscure 50+ year old library tracks, trade unreleased incidental music from decades-old television productions and attempt to remove sound effects from 5.1 mixes. Suffice to say, we're all varying degrees of weird, so it seems strange to me that it hasn't been at least brought up before (at least to my recollection).
Obviously an official release is out of the question due to the whole "work for free for one broadcast only" thing, but given how Keff was willing to toss out promos like mad to any fan who asked, do we know if it ever got bootlegged?

I've often wondered what happened to the pop songs Keff recorded for the series - under the name of "The Lorells" for Delta and the Bannermen (Rock around the Clock, Singing the Blues, Why Do Fools Fall In Love, Mr Sandman, Goodnight Sweetheart. That'll Be the Day, Only You (and You Alone), Lollipop, Who's Sorry Now, Happy Days Are Here Again), as well as a few covers he did for Remembrance of the Daleks, and whether they recorded the songs in full.
Same with the music Courtney Pine provided for Silver Nemesis.

Take with a pinch of salt, but The Millenium Effect mentioned (I think in passing during its big long recap of what was previously unreleased/released and where/released in a different form in the 50th Anniversary set) that not only were the covers performed in full, but they wanted to release a complete album of all the songs to tie-in with the broadcast. For whatever reason the higher ups at the BBC said no and they did the 25th Anniversary album instead.
EDIT: found it. From here (
http://www.millenniumeffect.co.uk/audio/doctor-who-50th-anniversary-collection-silva-screen-11cd-disc-seven.php):
"Producer John Nathan-Turner and composer Keff McCulloch had hoped to release a special soundtrack album to accompany this serial, for which numerous 1950s tracks had been re-recorded by McCulloch (along with three session musicians and the Wilson Singers, all of whom appeared on-screen in the story). BBC Records rejected this, commissioning The 25th Anniversary Album instead."

Dimensions in Time? Pervert! :-)
Now, has anyone got an mp3 of Anal Retentive 3(a): The Man Without a Life by Trevor Duncan?

Wondering what pic will they use for the official cover. This is a nice alternate cover though.

DiT is a pile of poo, but the music does have merit - in fact, I like it better than some other Keff scores!
There was a recreation posted here of an incidental track a while a go, but sadly only the one, though. Ripe for a suite recreation, I'd say.:-)
