It seems kinda weird that some people will refuse to download from itunes or amazon but they will gladly take it from someone else here that downloaded it from the same source.

My only problem with buying these tracks from iTunes is that you can't buy them individually. I always purchase the physical discs, and occasionally I purchase the digital download off Silva's website if it goes up early (the series 4 soundtrack was up as MP3s on Silva's website 17 days before the disc released... so fingers crossed they repeat the cycle, as that means the album will be available in a couple of days) but I really don't want to have to purchase the whole thing a third time just to get the two bonus tracks.

moontrekker
09-02-2010, 01:01 PM
Yea itunes likes to do that, it annoys me too, you buy the cd then 2 or 3 bonus tracks appear and they say that you have to purchase the whole cd to get them, my comment was not directed at anyone specifically. Im not sure how itunes will do this , Im hoping we in the US will get it at the same time on itunes as the UK then Ill probably download it and buy the cd later on amazon when its cheeper.

OK, so I found that the music that plays after the main title on "Galaxy Four" is the end passage from "Sonatine", from Les Structures Sonores. The thing is, it doesn't just come after it, it starts playing before the main title fades out. So I had to find out exactly when that happens, then fade the main title out -- Sonatine doesn't fade in. Then I had to mix the two together by recording while playing (It won't let me save four tracks, and the stereo mix that resulted when I did was terribly overblown.) Voila! Track 1: Sea of Sand.

My favorite piece will be "A Rill at the Window."

Dalekdude...I finally had a chance to listen to your rip of "The End of Time" score and it was fantastic as usual. Your hard work has been much appreciated this season as we have waited for the scores to come out. It only has made me more excited for the release of the specials soundtrack in a couple of weeks. I also listened to your "The Pandorica Opens" and "The Big Bang" rips and they were great as well, any chance of getting the Doctor's speech he makes to the alien armada as an mp3? It's one of my favorite quotes from this series.

Sorry folks - I tend to assume that everybody around here watches anime and therefore will already have the necessary software to play MKVs. That's not necessarily so! For playback in Windows Media Player, you need to install either FFDshow (better but harder) or the CCCP codec pack (easier) from CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack (http://www.cccp-project.net/)

I'd recommend against any re-encodes as they will bloat the file size and extensively damage the picture and sound quality.

Watch this space for some better quality uploads... ;)

Picture Quality is definitely improved, on par with the file i have from the 2008 Proms.
Babydoll, the MU link worked fine and the file, as i said, works fine. Is it possible that borrowed laptop is missing a few codecs?
VirtualDub tell me this is encoded in XviD MPEG-4 Codec (FourCC Code), decompressor DivX 6.9.2
Don't know if that helps, hope it does.

That scene release from macdawson should play on pretty much anything. (Picture quality marginally better than mine, audio is terrible though.)

Babydoll: You could download the Portable VLC Player from here VLC Media Player Portable | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB drives (http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable)

It doesn't physically install anything so when you're done you can just delete it and whoever owns the laptop will never know. With that you could play either of these... :)

09-08-2010, 07:33 AM
It is - the broadcast the other night was great but the version being shown on Friday night has some of the non-Dr Who music included too, as well as a bit more of Murray Gold's stuff....or so brother of mine (who works in the bbc) says...

tangotreats
09-08-2010, 09:18 AM
This is correct. There was a few items missing even of the Doctor Who music on Monday's broadcast. Even though all the music would've fit nicely into an hour they had to pad it out with endless soundbites, gushing sycophantic praise, and corporate posturing - all of which should have gone in the behind the scenes film if anywhere at all... *rant over*

It does indeed appear that the extended version will have all the Doctor Who stuff intact as well as the classical pieces conducted by Grant Llewellyn.

What would be lovely is if they didn't feel it necessary to play dialogue in the middle of some of the music cues. If I want to hear dialogue, I'll watch Doctor Who. If I want to hear music, I'll watch The Proms. It would also have been nice if pieces like Vale Decem had been permitted to play without constant fevered applause from the audience every time a Doctor appears on the big screens. I remember a time when people listened to music, and respected the performers by remaining deathly silent during the performance. Rapturous applause is something to be done when the music has finished. Was it really necessary to completely drown out possibly the best piece of Who music of all time with childish screams and wolf-whistles every thirty seconds? I was going to go to the concert but I'm glad I didn't as I would've been so mad. *second rant over*

Sorry folks :)

As for sound, sorry, Tangotreats, but i don't notice that much difference. But still, this has to be a compromise. For sound quality i have the audio files, this is about the show that acompanies the music. Don't know if i'm making much sense. :)

Yeah, the first broadcast was heavily edited, i don't mind the music outside DW to be cut but they cut a couple of cues of DW music too. They did the same with the first DW Prom, they broadcasted a 1 hour edit and later an extended version, wich is the one i have. There's also a file with backstage footage going around for those interested.

I wasn't complaining at you, my friend... I was just wryly observing that the scene release typically have poor sound and mine was specifically optimised for sound quality.

BBC3 broadcast their audio at a higher bitrate than the original radio broadcast would've been sourced from, so theoretically the best audio of the concert will come from the TV broadcast. BBC HD sound is even better. :)

I totally get what you're saying and your audio sounds different from the audio that's been around. What i'm saying is, if a file comes up with both perfect video and audio, great. But if i have to choose between the two, i'll choose one with better video quality because this is a visual medium (TV). But believe me, i totally apreciate your effort and your audio has replaced the previous files, where necessary.

It would have been nice if each piece of music in "Galaxy Four" were just a section taken out of the larger tracks from Le Structures Sonores, but noooooo -- the music editor for that serial sometimes strung passages together from different tracks altogether, and since a lot of the music doesn't sound a whole lot different from the rest, it's a struggle.

I would be more pissed off if they had pushed it back further than two or three weeks...October 4th is fine enough. I pre-ordered both soundtracks so it really doesn't matter that much. Murray gave a recently quote about the Specials soundtracks, just basic stuff like saying the two disc format is different. Stuff being pushed back and forth happens all the time so I'm not really concerned. The Series Five soundtrack is still listed for release on November 8th, still no track listing though.

I really just hate that it was pushed back by two weeks. It wouldn't be so bad if we hadn't been waiting for so long. Murray's original twitter posts indicated a January/February release, and then nothing happened for nearly seven months.

It doesn't help that Murray Gold's music for this show is my favorite music. I mean that in the "if you could only take one album on a desert island, which one would it be?" sort of way. I would take one of Murray's WHO albums, and all indications point toward The Specials collection being the album I'd choose to take.

This disc will literally make my year. Sad, but true.

Then we email Silva Screen and tell them to release Vale. Yeah, the first track. Like what some people have done so far with their albums, they've given a free download of one or two of the songs. I guess Vale would be a good song to help the hype and make the wait softer.

On the bright side, during an exchange with someone who has a review copy of the album, Murray insinuated he's considering releasing the series 5 soundtrack in a similar fashion to this one. Considering the nature of the exchange, I took that to mean we may be able to expect a 2 disc album featuring the score for the series arranged in chronological order, like a properly arranged film score.

It would be brilliant if this became the new standard for his soundtrack releases. It would ensure maximum coverage of all the newest material without risking leaving off any really exciting tracks (I'm still bummed about missing out on the Judoon landing theme from Smith & Jones, and the Paradigm theme from School Reunion).

I always thought it was criminal that each series had only one CD. If Doctor Who were Japanase, each episode would have a soundtrack CD and twelve bonus CD singles of remixes, reimaginations, etc... My wonderful country almost never releases soundtracks of any kind, so whilst I do count myself lucky that Who does have something released, it's still a massive shame.

Each Christmas special has one orchestral session dedicated exclusively to that episode - that's 45 minutes of music, give or take. Each series had at least another full session and usually two. Session 1 gives 45 minutes of orchestra to the main part of the series and session 2 (45 minutes further) is used for the finale. So... you've got three hours of full orchestal music recorded per series - and then you've got all the small ensemble sessions at Air Lyndhurst (another 45 to 90 minutes) and the odd synth cue as well. Five, six hours in total? All this gets squashed down to 70 minutes for the soundtrack. SO MUCH excellent music never sees the light of day. The Christmas Invasion had a full 45 minute recorded score all with the orchestra - and only one minute of score made it to the CD. The Runaway Bride fared a bit better with four minutes. Voyage Of The Damned got TEN minutes. It is absolutely criminal.

Assuming they do a two disc set, and that they pack out each disc reasonably well, we could be getting as much as 2 hours and 20-25 minutes of music. THAT would be nice.

Here's keeping crossed fingers!

It's always possible we could get a The Music of Murray Gold: Doctor Who Unreleased Music Set (my suggested title only) sometime. I wish someone would explain the process of what the music selection is. I'm pretty sure that Murray and Ben Foster probably have the ultimate say in what goes onto the disc/s and what doesn't. Only a few more weeks left.

In the liner notes to one of the season albums--not sure which one, 3 or 4--Murray was talking about that very process. Where an album was compiled, but was all mostly the subtle mood stuff, and Murray had them go back and add more of the big thematic pieces....

Apparently, Eric Siday's collection has ended up at the New York Public Library, as Tristram Cary's ended up at the Australian library. Empire Staters who like Dr. Who electronic stock music may want to check it out. Apparently it's "supervised", so then non-circulating, but it's something.

All of which, in some way, is a shame. All this does is keep music away from listeners.

I would have loved to have heard the Ultra Sonic Perceptions album (Siday). I've been hunting it for years. Anyone out there with old library music records tucked away?

For the series 4 soundtrack, Murray didn't even compile the music: his engineer did. Murray listened to it, thought it was good, but felt it had too many obscure musical beats, so he had his engineer go back and add more of the big themes and motifs. I think that's why Murray has been more hands-on with this year's releases.

Hopefully, some of the "missing tracks" will still be around years from now to release. Murray is apparently really disorganized with his music. Some of his older scores (not for Doctor Who) don't even exist anymore, and things are so disorganized, musically, that when it came time to use Rose's Theme in The End of Time Part 2, they actually used an iTunes version of her theme from the first soundtrack release because they didn't have time to hunt the master recording down. No one knew where it was.

What subscription is that? Someone with a NYPL card could go and listen to it right now, I assume. At least then he could have a taste of what the rest of us are missing!

There was this thread in another whatever-this-is where someone had picked up a HUGE collection of library music. Most of it from GB. Some artists whose music has been used on Dr. Who. But the thread ended in 2008, so if anything else has happened, he didn't tell anyone.

It was a subscription to the RNIB site for streaming audio. 50 pounds gives you unlimited access, so the deal would be you sign up, a few of us chip in, and you capture the audio (don't ask me how - I'm sure there's someone clever) and share. There are 3 9th Dr novels (though Recons will hopefully post one soon), and readings of the Making of a TV show, Frontios and the Ultimate Evil, the latter read by the author. Recons has signed on as sighted, so he can't get the sub.

Hey everyone, iTunes has just put the album up for preorder, which means that they have 30 second previews of all the tracks. Certainly sounds wonderful :)

---------- Post added at 08:27 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:54 AM ----------

Ok, here's my assessment on all the tracks... The stuff from The Next Doctor is brilliant, and seems to have covered all the main themes for that episode. Same with Planet of the Dead, although that didn't have many really memorable cues. Can't say much about Waters of Mars as it's only 4 tracks and yet still has more time than Planet of the Dead so there's too much missing out - although I will say that 'Altering Lives' does not appear to be the TimeLord Victorious music or 'Vale'. That music (or at least part of it) is covered in the second Vale.

Now in terms of the bonus tracks - Never Too Old To Shoot and Fly seems to just be the third act of the music played during the flight to the mansion, as 'Dealing With the Menace' seems to be the first part and 'Speeding to Earth' seems to be the second. There's no sign of the user made 'Incoming!' on the official soundtrack, sadly.

Although possibly to make up for that, 'The Master Suite' seems like it's going to cover a lot of the Master's music, which is good.

---------- Post added at 08:59 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:59 AM ----------

Actually, 'Incoming!' possibly could be in 'The Timelords Last Stand', although this is a very small chance.

Thanks for the notice! Shame on SIlva Screen though. we could have got it today

EDIT: Altering Fates is not Vale, because Vale is the song played after the Doctor realizes what he's done and when he's saying goodbye to his old companions. I thought the lyrics made that clear enough (Vaaaleeeee... VAAAAAAAAAAAALEEEEEEEE... xD)

Also, the first Vale (opening track) is quite... sad, and slow, like if it was a funeral o.O

Well, I've given up on any news of Keff's covers for Delta (him and his girlfriend, performing as the Lorells). Also on getting DrMatt's soundtracks as FLACs (the problem with MP3s is that they put extra gaps at either end of each track, so to get one track to run smoothly into another requires a little bit of editing). On the other hand, I've had fun editing some of the MP3s myself.

One thing that nobody seems to have mentioned is some of the flaws in a few of the isolated music tracks on the DVDs. At first I assumed it was caused by something DrMatt had done. So I went back to the original DVDs and did my own rip - only to find the flaws were there too. With Curse of Fenric (televised version), it was easy to replace the affected tracks with the CD (or extended) versions. You can hear examples of what I'm talking about on tracks 13 (6" in), 26 (58" in), 34 (26" and 33" in) and 42 (28" in). Having said that, it could just be that my ears is a bit more sensitive than average to these things. Although they shouldn't be given the amount of noise I've subjected them to over the years...

In a couple of other cases, I split the track at the point the break occurred and faded them back into each other.

This didn't work so well on track 23 on State of Decay. There's a blip at 14", so my solution was to take an almost identical part of the track from a couple of seconds later and cross fade it over the offending area. I'm quite proud of the end result!

I'd be surprised if these flaws were in the source material - or that Mark Ayres would have let them slip through. So I can only assume it was some kind of DVD authoring issue...

One last thing before I go... Just a couple of minor corrections about the info on page 1 (the first post that began this thread).

First off, under "fan made" is a load of soundtracks that weren't exactly fanmade. They're mostly rips of isolated soundtracks from the official BBC DVDs. They have been mixed and compiled by fans, so I suppose "bootleg" is a better term.

"Doctor In Distress" wasn't a fanmade song either. Although produced by superfan Ian Levine (and it sounds fairly amateurish) it was actually a professional production. If it made any profit, it would have gone to Cancer Relief.

The final point is that "Dr Who is Gonna Fix it" was made by Bullamakanka (an Australian group). Blitzkrieg was a completely different band (English heavy metal) who wrote a completely different song about Dr Who called "I am the Doctor (Who are You?)"

I lined up the track times incorrectly, "The End Draws Near" is almost 4 minutes long, so it will definitely have the more constrained version of "The Clouds Part" on it :)

The one I'm REALLY REALLY hoping for above all things is the music used in both The Waters of Mars and The End of Time Part One where the Doctor was saving Adelaide and whatnot and the Master started the whole Immortality Gate thingy. What the hell? Assuming a maximum comfortable capacity on a CD of 78 minutes, that's FOURTY SEVEN minutes of wasted space across those two discs that would have been all "free" from a manufacturing perspective; why not bung some bonus tracks, unreleased stuff, etc in the free space? It's not like there's a shortage of good music that hasn't seen a release...

Don't get me wrong - I'm still grateful for the two discs, but given the palcity of New Who releases in comparison to the amount of actual music "in the can" - combined with the tendency for previous discs to be rammed absolutely full, it would have seemed obvious that they would have filled these to capacity... instead of giving us two half-empty discs for the price of one full one!

Just tell me one thing: Are you sure the files recorded in the CD are not ocupying too much? :)

The file sizes are what matter in the end.

File sizes? We're talking about a compact disc. They have a maximum length (give or take) of 78 minutes.

We get what we get be grateful for that

I think I've already stated my gratitude and delight for what we are receiving. Observing a flaw does not suggest otherwise. (This is not FSM, where if you state that any release is less than perfect, you are treated as if you just wrote a fifty page diatribe laced with obscenities, attacking the album producer's parentage and proclaiming his entire company a division of Satan Inc.) ;)

The freedom to acknowledge where something has failed validates genuine praise for where it has succeeded. :)

Well as far as Im concerned , and this is my opinion , no one has the right to say anything negative about a product until the product has come out and is experienced by the consumer.
It sounds like Mr Gold has gone through great lengths to give is all this music, bringing up the negative even before its released to me isnt right, and thats a FSM board trait. :)

I think you'll find one has the right to say whatever one wishes, provided one says it with a measure of courtesy and decorum.

I am not judging something I haven't seen and I am not making unfair criticisms. I certainly don't believe that a simple statement "There is wasted space on this disc" is worthy of any kind of argument, for it is a fact and absolutely nothing more.

Peace, moonie. :)

hehe, I got some more too, the folks in the UK get it before us :( maybe the itunes in both countries are linked up to get them at the same time, RIGHT! :)

I downloaded one of the scores from the Silva site one time, kinda a pain because you had to download each track separately, the cost was about the same. Ill stay with itunes.

I did a Silva download once, and never again; as you say, every track comes individually and half of them were corrupted as well. They did put out a correction pack a few days later, but honestly... Big pain in the rear end.

And, it's only fair we should get them before you Yanks. We have to wait for all your good stuff... ;)

Uhm... if you guys have problems with getting it soon, I should get my CD home in Monday (As I purchased it from Silva's site). Then again I'd have to rip it with iTunes and I have exams all next week long so... can't promise really anything in case I get it in time.

[/COLOR]One last thing before I go...

In addition to Exar Xan's reply, we are also aware that there is some confusing story numbering going on and we're working on a system that might ease this.

I give up. Outta here!

Why?

a few notes if you guys want this thing to survive.

feel free to posts requests here but keep in mind we also have a requests forum.

don't shit up the thread: don't troll, don't feed the trolls. if someone is being an asshole or breaking rules, contact a mod, don't whine about it in the thread.

please create new topics for each upload in addition to posting them here: i know it takes an extra second of your time, but it's much appreciated.

keep off-topic discussion to a minimum: this thread is for offtopic chitchat with fellow film score hunt thread fans. go nuts over there.

the usual stuff: include as much info for releases as possible, including source material, how it was ripped/encoded, tracklist, etc. it helps people out a lot."

Luckily we don't seem to have a lot of trolling on here.

PS: Also, the off topic thing applies to the FSM thread, I'm guessing.

The new rules, as opposed to earlier are simply that each posted link must have a dedicatd thread. It can be posted anywhere you want, as long as you also post a seperate thread just for it. Not too tough. The rest was aimed mostly at the Hunt threaders..:D

And watch the local Royal Mail office decide that it's not your day to receive post because there isn't enough staff to go around and deliver all the mail due to holidays/sickness or just plain Bad weather.

I have ordered stuff on Pre-Order from Play. It was posted before release and I received it the day after release.
It would had been quicker to pick up the item itself.

The only way you will get the item by the next day if you pay for a courier service with Amazon and then they g/tee delivery by 1pm.

Normal 1st class post have to many priblems attached as mentioned above.

Worry not for uploading, have Rapidshare Premium Account right now :P

But I'm not sure if the WMP rips in MP3...? I have set iTunes to rip the audio at 256 or 320 kbps Mp3 files, that I know. What I don't know is if there would be quality differences. And maybe I could do a FLAC of a few songs to see how it turns out. (That's what i have more problem with, FLAC ripping)

Hi,

gnawingagony over at another forum has posted his rips of the incidental music from the classic DW stories from the videos/DVDs. They contain sfx, but they may be worth a listen, especially those that are not known to exist. Anyone want me to post links?

@ Pansentient: have a look through the forum pages. The link will be there somewhere in a post of mine. (Is there a way of searching for all the posts made by a particular member? There is on some forums). If it has been deleted for some reason, or the link doesn't work, then I can re-upload. It's a shame a DrMatt version hasn't surfaced along with Planet of Fire. You might want to check out my Time and the Rani upload also, as the DVD didn't come with an iso score. If the other Carey Blyon DVDs turn up without iso scores, I do have a few handfuls of tracks somewhere of those too, if I recall correctly.

Very slightly off-topic, but is anyone here into old library music records? I'm wondering if a collaboration might be possible to get complete story albums of DW (and Quatermass) music out there. There's a 90% or so accurate guide to stock music in DW here: http://www.millenniumeffect.co.uk/audio/index2.html . PM me if you can help please.

Thanks

I've noticed that the Disc 2 Vale, on notes, it says that it incorporates the Doctor's theme.

That'll be just after the "I don't want to go", there's that brief blast of the theme for a few seconds.

@stereoelf Yep, I've got a scanner, but a program to crop the images down may be a problem. If you want, I can scan the whole booklet, there's some great liner notes about the history of the movies, the composers' biographies, and a brief bit on the remastering process.

Yeah, Vale Decem definitely incorporates The Doctor's Theme, but I got the impression from Night Terror's post that the following track, Vale, also includes it. It's possible, as according to the poster at Gallifrey Base, Vale is extended on the album and includes stuff not in the show.

Easy, Tango, easy. I figure that as much as we all want this, one or two more days to wait really aren't gonna kill us, and I am just happy it will get uploaded. Take time to relax, eat, and if you can, sleep..:D

My copy is about to be shipped according to Play.com so there's a slim chance of getting it tomorrow, but if not 100% Monday morning.

I wish you luck with this.

I ordered "Ring of Steel" audio book from Play. It was despatched two days before release, so that I would get it on the day of release.

Let history be written, that the people who deliver the post call Snail Mail, just did that and missed the offical release date by one day.

It would had been quicker to pick it up from the Audio book department at a local book store.

Tango, you may want to phone ahead and make sure they've got the disc in stock. I saw elsewhere online someone complaining that Forbidden Planet in Cardiff were either out or hadn't stocked them on the shelf yet, so Forbidden Planet in London might have run dry as well.

moontrekker
10-02-2010, 01:26 PM
Well Im not sure how the laws are there but legally they cant stock it until release date, but some of the smaller record stores do anyway.
its possible if they have it but had not put it out yet , depending on the person there, they might go ahead and sell it to tango.

The Doctor

I've always been slightly fuzzy on street date law. Wouldn't such a law mean that, legally, retailers like Amazon and Play and Silva Screen couldn't list the CD as in stock and up for purchase (rather than pre-order) prior to Monday?

Random factoid: I scored Deep Blue Sea on DVD a week and a half prior to street date thanks to a careless Movie Gallery employee who inadvertently stocked the counter display early. Seems like that was ages ago (I suppose it was, seeing as the film came out on DVD a decade ago!)

Well and this was awhile ago in a record store one day looking for a cd, they told me they had it but could not put it out before the release date, but things may have changed since then, I mean its only a few days , who cares. So they put it out early.
But on the other hand many are waiting for this cd probably fans of the show as well as us, so they may have only gotten in a few and sold them.
I know some record stores sell their promos too.

Well see :)

Sorry to inform you that FP Cardiff is not the same Company as FP, LOndon.

Google Forbidden planet, and not only do you get Forbidden Planet Megastore (London), but also Forbidden Planet International (Cardiff).

I'm interested like everyone else here to find out the two extra tracks that are avalible on Itunes will be posted here.

Awwwww... Well, thanks for the effort Tango! :) Let's look at it on the bright side: 24 hours to go! :D

EDIT: Just a thing I'd like to note, but did anyone notice when rewatching The End of Time that the Series 5 "I am the Doctor" theme is played? It's just one of the cues, but listen carefully when the Master is hitting the big can 4 times: They're the same notes.

I see.
Will someone post a FLAC version too? I'm fine with 320 MP3s, but a FLAC wouldn't be bad, it would be brilliant actually.
Don't care what version is posted though, I will listen ot it no matter what.

Thanks but I went and listened and they sounded like tracks from the Proms concert.

The Doctor
10-04-2010, 03:49 AM
A friend who has the physical disc has confirmed they're definitely from the album. (The Proms version of Vale Decem is contaminated with audience cheering in any case, and it's about 15 seconds shorter than the version in the episode. Also, Vale was not played at the concert, and the track features the unused cue Murray mentions in the track notes.)

Then it was a lousy upload either way Ill wait until the actual cd appears :)
