You... I like you. Keep up the good work mate.

But yeah on a serious note, I streamed it from my mac to Kodi on the tv through airplay. I just hope the rest of the series keeps this fresh form. Series 8 felt more like the writers were trying to move on but couldn't let their imagination stretch them off from the way Smith's era was written, thus making it seem very off for me. This series though, damn. I liked the new variation of 12's theme, was more kickass.

Inspired by Funky1&2's recent success in that area, I've begun the rather laborious project of reconstructing what cues I can from the War Games.

No Man's Land - Restored by Gwylock1 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/89y4njmc95tfsab/Doctor%20Who%20-%20The%20War%20Games%20-%20No%20Man%27s%20Land%20%28Restored%20by%20Gwyloc k1%29.mp3?dl=0)

Where else to start but with the first of the lot? Through re-looping repeated notes and using some high-end artifact-removal bits and bobs, I've got the entire first cue from the story more or less clean, and synced with how it actually appears in the story, with the exception of the end, which, as evidenced by a later recurrence of the same cue, was cut off in the first iteration, and has been restored in this cut. Hopefully this is if interest to someone? ;)

If you can work out what's happening with the Roman Theme then you're a better man than me! There are 3 appearances - I think all of them must be different recordings rather than re-edits but I'd love to be proved wrong.

I've just finished this - the Arrival of the Time Lords organ music from parts 9 and 10:

https://www.mediafire.com/?y7ebck86m3hhjvz

I've cheated on this one: the opening isn't quite the correct opening and the end isn't quite the correct end, but I think it's a nicer listen.

I think that's it for all the long-ish cues that appear more than once. There are a few that make solo appearances (e.g. the regeneration) and I haven't done any of the shorter stings and links yet.

EDIT: Actually, there's another cue that appears twice - a riff on the Resistance Theme - but one of the appearances is better in every way than the other so no mixing and matching required.

About 50/50 I think, the piano bit at the very end is entirely filtered, but the long tones are mostly looped, and chords tend to be partially filtered with loops covering damaged audio that couldn't be filtered entirely cleanly. given enough time, I'm hoping to rebuild the whole thing, but it's very time-consuming, and just one track can take up to six hours to get into presentable shape (at least the No Man's Land one did!)

My favourite bit from The War Games is when the Resistance come storming into the barn and out gun Von Weich (who I would look like if I lost a bit of weight). Alas, it is full of stuntmen grunts, groans, screams and rifle shots, the rotters.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a few messages waiting for me on the Top Security Channel.

Amy's Theme and a few others from the Matt Smith era. There's nothing new except for the last piece of music as the Doctor talks about finding a battlefield, which is probably in The Magician's Apprentice, so it's not really worth compiling the tracks from the short.

Gwylock - my version of the Confederate Theme - I think there's a looped section that I didn't spot in time that you might want to exterminate when you get to it. The sequence at 8" is repeated at 13".

The problem section is in the first of two appearances in part 8.

The Next Time music isn't new though. It's "Aristotle, We Have Been Hit" from Series 8. Unless I'm hearing things wrong. The next time trailers rarely use new music now. The Dark Water Next Time is probably the only one to do so recently.

Before public release I upload files to my collaborators to listen to and give feedback. I had uploaded the entire session, not just the stereo track, which was never meant for public release. It is still currently being worked on and but I have no ETA on when it will be completed.

Basically it's like when the studio sessions of a soundtrack are leaked. Not good for the production company.

Updated both links. All we have for Genesis of the Daleks are the cues recreated by Heathcliff Blair for the "Music from the Tom Baker era" soundtrack, which to me are really poor imitations of the original recordings but if you do want them, they can be found here (Thread 72196).

I also want to stand up for that Heathcliff Blair CD. If it had come out *now* it'd be impressive technically, but 20 years ago it was nothing short of witchcraft. Plenty of moments in it just work perfectly to me, and I have incredibly sensitive ears for these things. It works as an experiment, and it works as an album. And Dudley loved it.

I have always resented how snotty Ayres has consistently been about it, undermining it and essentially trying to consign it to history (whilst simultaneously recording his own - genuinely poor-sounding - cheapo synth cover versions of film music for Silva). It deserves a real place in DW music history, and should be in print. Not ignored because it intimidated an egomaniac with Logic Pro, cloth ears and a god complex. (I realise there's a personal-attack theme to many of my posts in this thread, but that man being 'in charge' of things has made the official side of DW music/sound fandom a joyless, infuriating, insulting, patronising, tedious, repetitive, sound-effects-obsessed trudge for the best part of 20 years. No wonder everyone's turned to DIY).

Speaking of today's episode... that totally, TOTALLY annoyed me... possibly more than any episode of New Who ever has.

It was almost going to be my favourite. A dying Davros reaching out to his old nemesis, begging for redemption on his deathbed... was simply glorious, and it was done so, so beautifully. That scene could be the finest piece of writing in the history of scripted television. The most genuine, most sincere, most heartbreaking moment of character development in the history of Doctor Who. Written and scored completely straight - not to make The Doctor believe, but to MAKE US BELIEVE. The image of Davros a broken and dying old man made me cry. And then they reveal it's just another bonkers Davros plan. The most despicable crime a writer can ever commit against his audience. You can play with your characters... but you don't play with your audience. They talk about mixing up the Doctor Who world? What better way? Davros, for the first time in fifty years, is telling the truth. They make their peace. Davros dies - DEFINITIVELY - and The Doctor sheds a genuine tear at his passing. Nope, much easier to throw all that away in favour of a big, action packed finale with a little bit of cod-philosophy that was nice but it felt like Moffat throwing a bone. God dammit.

And that was what made it so good - we did believe. I must confess I'm really enjoying this season so far.

IMO you've missed the point; the crux of the story is that against all our better judgement and instincts, Moffat (and Bleach) DO make us finally believe the lie. The audience start out the story thinking "Doctor, don't be an idiot, he's lying, it's a trick, it's a trap, don't believe him." and then by the finale that's turned around to have the audience thinking "ohh, so he WAS telling the truth all along, even I believe him" and then the twist is that you (the audience), even knowing what you know about TV drama and monsters and arch villains, have been fooled and it was a trick all along. Then the twist beyond that is that the Doctor himself was NOT fooled - he was too smart.

So the story takes the audience from "Doctor, don't be a fool, don't believe him, be smart like me!" to "Doctor, I was a fool, I believed him, but you were too smart!".

I dont mind either situation in the end, but I can see why one or the other is preferred, not everyone would be satisfied

Point taken; it just bothers me that...

...the most genuine piece of character development in the entire history of Doctor Who was nothing more than a gigantic bluff. I take on board the concept that WE had to believe in order for us to understand how canny the Doctor was being by NOT believing... but it was so gorgeously done. That scene deserved to have more impact on the plot than it ultimately did; it could've been a game changer - instead it was essentially the Doctor wasting time so that the big reset button could be pushed at the end of the episode, as it always is. The greatest twist of all - greater than the deception and double deception and triple deception - would have been that Davros, just this once, was being straight - faced with his own mortality and wracked with guilt at his past, he demonstrated genuine humanity. The episode (and the previous one) spent a great deal of time establishing that this probably WAS a trap - we would've all been there thinking "Come on, Doctor - this has to be a crock of shit!" but what it if wasn't? That would've been really something, I think. As it stands, we have a story full of promise but which follows so many other episodes into the Doctor Who trope book: a) The Doctor goes somewhere and faces an enemy. b) They posture for a little while and then they fight. c) The Doctor is lead to believe that all hope is lost when in fact it's not and his friends are just about to burst in at the last second to save the day. d) It turns out that The Doctor was one step ahead the whole time and didn't need any help, but it's still useful that his friends tried to help him because... e) Now everybody's together in the same room again ready for a quick victorious finale.

Oh, well... At least it wasn't "*sniff* I love you" / "Quite right too! And I suppose, Rose Tyler..." *disappears* *sniff sniff sniff sniff* ;)

I've just been poking through the soundtrack rip of The Time Monster and I suddenly ran across a bit I recognised from somewhere else. There's a trumpet blast bit in there that I thought for a moment was from Delia Derbyshire's title music from Tutankhamun's Egypt, but on comparing, it's clear that it's not from Delia's piece, BUT it's unmistakably from the same material, and may even be from the incidental music she did for the serial (which I do not believe has been publicly released, but if the serial still exists it may be salvageable)
It's also possible that it's not actually from Delia's score, but may be directly from the source material she sampled, namely the 1939 recording of that trumpet out of Pharaoh Tutty Boy's tomb.
Someone else will have to look into this, or I may get around to it eventually, just thought some of the people who've been cataloguing stock music might be interested, assuming you don't already know all about this and I've typed all this out for nothing :P

---------- Post added at 07:50 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:41 AM ----------

For comparison, here's the recording of the trumpet itself (http://wikidelia.net/images/a/ab/Tutankhamun%27s_silver_trumpet.ogg), I believe this is the same one Delia sampled
Here is Delia's title music (http://wikidelia.net/images/e/ee/Tutankhamun%27s_Egypt.ogg) (on relistening it seems likely that aside from being based on the same source material, this has no relation to the actual cue, but then it was produced around the same time as The Time Monster, so who knows?)
This is the bit from the TV rip that seems to match (https://www.dropbox.com/s/0vv5tp2e1xy7r6y/time%20monster%20bit.mp3?dl=0)

It's not any old trumpet, it is, as you say, Tutankhamun's trumpet, receiving its first blow in 3000 years!

If you play it backwards, it is Slartibartfast's answer phone in the radio series of Hitch-Hikers.

If feels like that horn has been EVERYWHERE! But I had no idea of its provenance tho.

Now, don't ask me where else I've heard it, but it is one of those ubiquitous sounds. Gorgeous. I had a relative who was one of the guards during the excavations in Egypt when it became public knowledge they had found something. He is currently dead, but still pottering around his garden, building pyramids, killing postmen with his green glazed eyes.

If it's not too much trouble. I always love screwing with the soundtrack to see how the mood of a certain scene would change (i.e Sherlock's "The Game is On" for the post regeneration in End of Time). But a whole episode, it would be really cool.

I noticed in Chris666Eden's Time Of The Doctor album, there is the trailer music for the episode itself. Murray Gold did not compose this track and is freely available to download.

Heard about that ages ago, apparently Capaldi's meant to be playing it (or part of it) on that Guitar from The Magician's Apprentice. I just hope it genuinely is Capaldi playing it, and not Murray Gold, honestly even Capaldi's improvised version from behind the scenes in that one feature was more accurate than half Murray's arrangements!

Is there any evidence to suggest these were ever actually issued to contributors? Running off unlicenced compilation albums and distributing copies doesn't sound like a very ethical, professional, or legal thing for a BBC department to be doing! TBH, I would call bullshit on this one.

pernclub
10-10-2015, 03:04 PM
There were definitely lavishly produced, properly pressed Confidential DVD boxsets issued to contributors for the first series or two, so it's possible these CDs are in fact genuine promos (though the CDR-ish cases are odd given how fancy the DVDs were). Why anyone would actually WANT them is another thing.

The production of those DVD sets was paid for out of the programme budget and therefore the licence fee, which I've always felt was exceptionally dodgy ground. Probably one of the reasons they stopped. Then again, this was pre-recession, the world was more of a big blank cheque back then.

Hey, Chris! Any plans for any series 9 tracks? It could the song that he's written for this series but all of the other songs that have been specifically written for the series have been much more prominent within the episodes but I enjoyed it none the less.

Methinks Clara is or rather will be the girl who died. The Doctor's demeanor has changed: he hugged Clara - a practice he previously dismissed because it hides someone's face, yet has taken to wearing sunglasses and while they don't hide one's face, they do hide your eyes. (I don't buy his wearable tech argument. He has temporarily retired the sonic for another reason.) The same for the hoodie, another way of hiding your face and a part of this latest episode was explaining the Doctor's chosen face. Reveal but then conceal?

Also the Doctor supposedly throwing himself a wake in episode one, perhaps it was for Clara and not for him. Then there is his admonition to her about slowing down with the adventures - a warning? - and him berating himself about not interfering with the time lines when, as the Doctor said, he can do anything. The belated realization of a man who feels he didn't do enough to save his friend? (Add to that his pronouncement that he "saves people." Almost sounds like a conclusion he arrived at a little too late.) Plus Clara does to "Valhalla" in episode five. More foreshadowing?

Finally, what is on the Doctor's disc? He defeated Davros so why not let Clara hear it? Perhaps it is Clara's voice on the disc? Is it her Last Will and Testament? Or maybe there is information that can't be revealed until later?

We know Ms. Coleman is leaving at the end of this series. The question, of course, is how? My guess it involves Missy, Davros and the Daleks.

James (The Disney Guy)
10-19-2015, 05:31 PM
I Am Sure Missy Is Back But I Donno About The Daleks And Davros (I Am Proberly Wrong) Maybe Clara Just Leaves I Donno If They Would Kill Another Companion, I Mean Amy's Depature Was A Sad One As Was Donna's. It May Be Like Another Martha Goodbye (But Then Again It Is MOffat)

Killgrave
10-19-2015, 08:21 PM
Moffat being Moffat, I'm sure he'll not shy away from ripping our hearts out with Clara's departure. And when we last saw Missy the Daleks had her surrounded - a state of affairs she quickly reversed - and with Missy calculating just how much carnage she could cause with the help of the Daleks. You could hear the gears turning in her head. Missy probably still wants to kill Clara since there's only room for one woman in the Doctor's life and that woman is Missy.

Anyone notice that the music for The Girl Who Died seemed to be almost if not entirely synthesised like right back where we started in 2005? I'm aware the show's budget has dropped dramatically this year (hence all the two-parters and there not being a tenth series commissioned for 2016), but I thought the music always brought its money back through the albums and concerts. There was some hybrid stuff in series 8 as well, but this episode seemed to be entirely virtual to me bar the vocals. Mock string pads and washes are always evident and sound fine but there were a lot of unusual British folk instrument sounds used here that were distractingly fake and reminded me of the plastic brass sounds of the Eccleston run.

This episode was the first this series I've actually unreservedly liked. The renewed obsession with non-linear storytelling is infuriating me once more, so it was nice to have a relative breather from it. Deep in my bones, I suspect we may be coming to a bit of a nexus point for the show. It's being sharply downsized and public interest (in the UK at least) has tailed off very significantly, so I wonder if its future after this run and the upcoming hiatus may be in a different form. It's annoying because I think Capaldi is amazing and I loved most of series 8, but regardless of who's fault it is, the show feels like it's on a low battery and a bit cornered (bringing Missy back so soon for little reason was the first time the revived series has ever genuinely lost its confidence like that). The classic run was broadcast in such bite-sized pieces and at such a casual pace (not to mention free from excessive, sledgehammered repeats) that it lasted an eternity before people got tired of it, but ever since 2005 it's clear that it's been burning its fossil fuel at a significantly faster pace than its parent, on such a rapid fast-forward (and add Torchwood, Sarah Jane and the other media-blitz spinoffs into that too) that in relative terms I think we're more or less at McCoy now. 11 years is a very long time (in Star Trek terms, if 'Rose' was the Next Gen pilot, we're now wrapping up DS9 and Voyager's almost done, and we know what that means*), and I think we need to steel ourselves for what may be about to happen over the next couple of years. 'Class' looks to me to have been created for no other reason than to buy time. I think this old body is wearing a bit thin...

*and in Star Wars terms, we're at the halfway point towards The Phantom Menace. Eek.

Aside from the soundtrack's dynamic, I think the other problem is that every single Doctor had his light humourous side, no matter how dark they were, which allowed the audience to connect with the character by means of comedy. Think of Matt Smith. He was hated at the beginning because everyone thought he was going to be a "dark" Doctor. But instead he became known as the drunken giraffe. Capaldi's Doctor is wonderful, but the lack of quick one-upping jokes (without a cold mood) is causing the show to become stale. However, that's just my own two cents.

Too slow? I had the opposite complaint, it seemed like a trailer for something longer and better. I watched it after watching Inferno, and it was like watching CBeebies after watching Hamlet.

Personally, I love the new season. I think it's a much better step-up from Series 8 in terms of the plot. Also, Murray's work on S09 is greater than ever. Cannot wait for the soundtrack to get released. In the meantime, next week should be when gav-odonnell.com will be largely updated with more content. We have 1 new film and some Doctor Who to push out.

The audio editing isn't done by me, just the website stuff. I write the HTML and host the site, and Gav sends the audio to me. Although the TRON: Legacy and the upcoming film score were supplied by me! Thank you though!

Can't say I enjoyed the episode... They seem to have just swapped one annoying female character for another. I also noticed a lot more reused music. Still, there was a reference to The Visitation, so at-least that's something memorable from the episode!

I Have to Agree.

Todays Episodes Felt to Slow, Granted some scenes were funny but it was another pointless alien and quick save, with an annoying female character..

I feeel personally that s9 is the most boreing i have watched since s6, i have yet to watch an episode i really got excited about.

Eh Me was plenty different from others in my eyes
annoying, possibly
But understandable too, and raised a few interesting notions

The season is a bit understated so far though. The season6 comparison may be apt.
I think with 2parters, there is less of a chance for a real standout

I have a few episodes of Torchwood ripped (Cyber-Woman (Which I have posted), Out of Time (Needs some tracks to be edited) and Children of Earth Day One (Needs to be re-ripped)) and have the 5.1 audio for the rest. I do plan on ripping all of Torchwood, just I'd like to finish ripping series 6 and updating the SJA rips first.

No standout music so far this season, either. Ashildr's theme is probably the most prominent.

Perhaps the orchestral session-work will be kept for the latter half of the season as thus far it's sounded particularly synthetic.

Personally I think it's been Murray's best year yet, finally realising the potential of electronic soundscapes and proper eerie scoring rather than blaring out fully orchestral bombast constantly (not that there's anything wrong with orchestral bombastic scoring, but there are times when it's appropriate and times when it's best to stuff the brass for a bit

Yes, I agree. The ambient soundscapes are magnificent and encompass the mood extremely well. On the other hand, the session work is even better. The tracklist for s09e02 has 'TARDIS Forcefield' and 'Wearable Sonic Technology', two cues that really bring out the Capaldi in Peter Capaldi.

...what is the session work?

Session work is the BBC National Orchestra of Wales playing, either samples or a full track. An example would be track 17 of the Series 3 disc, 'The Runaway Bride'. Excellent track.
A non-session track would be some work used in Series 1, using synths instead of an expensive orchestra.
All in all, very complicated. The budget and quality of music determines what gets the BBC National Orchestra of Wales/Crouch End Festival Chorus. Most of the Series 1 & 2 disc included their work, as Murray didn't want the synth stuff on the album.

I never meant to the obnoxious extremes of Matt Smith's era, but at least Series 8 had a perfect balance between Orchestral and Synthetic, along with some memorable themes and motifs. In comparison, this season's music aside from Before the Flood is so underwhelming.

The fact it's synthetic isn't what I'm complaining about it's more the fact that there are orchestral pieces which don't sound as if they were recorded by an orchestra. I loved the atmospheric variety of last season, there's just nothing to write home about thus far...

Yeah, if there's one complaint you'd never be able to make about DW's music since about 2007 is that it's sounded cheap. This year it does.

Update: just received the series 1 & 2 confidential music discs.

Disc 1 contains only pop music from the Doctor Who Confidential used in Doctor Who Series 1 & 2, while the second disc contains demos/alternate versions of songs featured on the series 1 & 2 soundtrack. In total, there are 12 new tracks that either 1. Weren't aired or 2. demo versions. An example would be 'Doomsday' but with a different guitar and percussion. Also a workprint version of the 2005 doctor who theme. There are no track names but I can ID some by ear, such as Doomsday, The Doctor's Theme, Open Titles, Westminster Bridge, Rose's Theme, and Slitheen.

Can you rip post the latter tracks here please? I'm rather curious to hear the workprint theme in particular. Is it a copy of the M!a!r!k! A!y!r!e!s! remix used on the leaked copy of Rose? Or is it genuinely one of the many unused demos that Murray has apparently done over the years?

One a better note, i'm sure everyone is aware of the dark water / death in heaven cinema release in 3D. What you might not know is that the score for both episodes is completely different in the sense that its now in a surround sound format like the orchestra is in the room with you.

Due to this the mixing for the episodes as been redone. Tracks don't fade in or out. Theres new music. Different instruments, added elements. Even the theme tune is in a surround sound quality.
