another funny think I was looking online to see about when it will appear here in itunes , I found the preorder for it but I couldnt find it on itunes when I brought it up, might just have to check tomorrow. I was kinda hoping that both the UK itunes and the US itunes would have it on the same day.
Ill check tomorrow.

The US release date for the CD (http://www.amazon.com/Doctor-Who-Specials-Murray-Gold/dp/B003XJO51A/ref=sr_1_fkmr2_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1286161399&sr=8-1-fkmr2) is November 9th (the same day as the series 5 box set), so I expect it'll be a while yet before it's available on the American iTunes store, which is unfortunate. :(

This may sound strange asking this, but does anyone know if the "Farewell Visit" track is actually featured on the CD.

This is the track with the Piano playing a couple of single notes as the Doctor visits his freinds. It is one part of the track that Actually makes me cry, even without seeing the visuals.

Thanks for the Vale & Vale Dec upload. Sounds good, but I was hoping that there was going to be the 11th Doctor Intro at the end.

Some people hate that bit after a very moving track, but to me it say" There are good things ahead".

Amazon.co.uk's link is still pointing to the Series 4 soundtrack. BLAST. I expect somebody will make it with this before I do, today - since it's already stated turning up on YouTube, an upload can't be far away. Fear not, waiting people - you will definitely hear this album today, one way or another... (But not in FLAC, at least, not from me.)

Are you sure it was the right album? I can see the Specials Soundtrack on Amazon (Doctor Who Original Music From Series 4: The Specials (Specially priced 2 CD Set): Murray Gold: Amazon.co.uk: Music (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Original-Music-Specially/dp/B003XJO51A)) but when I click on "Buy the MP3 album" I wind up at the Series 4 regular soundtrack page instead.

The Doctor

Yeah, the link I posted goes to the correct album. But when I click "add to basket", it gives me a message saying "We're sorry. We could not process your order because of geographical restrictions on the product which you were attempting to purchase. Please refer to the terms of use for this product to determine the geographical restrictions. We apologize for the inconvenience."

If you follow the link I posted (Doctor Who: Series 4-The Specials | Murray Gold | Format: MP3 Download (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Series-4-The-Specials/dp/B00443TEZG/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1286180281&sr=1-6)) it ought to take you to the MP3 album page. At least it does for me. The link on the main album page is still gimped -- it goes to the series 4 MP3 -- but I found it by searching for MP3 Albums instead of CDs.

Have to say, I'm terribly envious. I was prepared to double dip to get it now -- I've ordered the physical disc, am still waiting for it to arrive -- but Amazon decided to pull the geographical location card, which is weird. I think this is the first time Amazon has ever stonewalled me on ordering something because I'm not in the UK. Gutted!

The album is good, but I am still more eager for the Series 5 album, can't help it. I NEED the new Doc's theme, dammit.

The Doctor
10-04-2010, 12:26 PM
I wish variations of The New Doctor would have turned up in series 5. I remember at the time thinking that funky guitar-n-synth-n-percussion track would be the foundation for the 11th Doctor's theme, and while I dearly like the one we actually got in series 5, I'd like for The New Doctor to feature again.

Amanda
10-04-2010, 12:30 PM
Well, we'll see. Season 6 may broaden the themes some. He doesn't seem to be complacent with that, everything evolves. I still would have wanted more of the variations of all the strange, strange creatures, especially from 42. I would love an official fx free version of that, but there is only so much space....

Some of the stuff on this new album seem to forshadow the new Doc's theme...just heard "all in the balance", and it seems to be bubbling under the surface there. The style seems to morph...

The Doctor
10-04-2010, 12:36 PM
I'm just a big fan of the quirky stuff Murray writes for the show -- The New Doctor from this album and Hanging on the Tablaphone from the previous album being two of the best examples -- and at the time of transmission I recall liking the idea that the 11th Doctor's theme would be a little quirky and off-the-cuff. Having said that, I do genuinely love I Am the Doctor, and can't wait for the Series 5 soundtrack.

Incidentally, am I the only one who truly believes that Four Knocks is a much more emotional, moving piece of music than Vale Decem? I do really like Vale Decem, and I get a little teary eyed during the big finale, but I think Four Knocks -- and the first half of Vale (disc 2) -- are a lot more moving than Vale Decem.

I wouldn't trust Wikipedia to have the correct info, as i would had thought it would be best to slot the tracks into the correct story.

As for the CD, I got mine today.

Feelings are mixed as I really miss that sad sound as the Doctor says Farewell to his companions.

Maybe I'll try and find it on u tube and see if anyone has been able to clobber a clear (SFX FREE) version from bits and peices and the tune does repeat itself at stages.

You know, listening to this album for a second time, I find it hard to believe that anyone at Silva Screen would think there isn't a market for this stuff. Yet Murray hints on his Twitter account -- this very morning, in fact -- that the powers that be didn't believe a Specials soundtrack album was financially viable. The fact that the previous albums sold really well didn't seem to spell it out for them, but maybe the success of this one will (on iTunes it's number 1 on the soundtrack chart, and number 18 over all... and it got there in less than 10 hours.) I'm glad Murray pushed to have this released, and that's why I always purchase hard copies. I want Silva Screen to keep producing these things for as long as Murray is on the show.

Viva series 5 OST!

I've had the same problem, moon. It took me a while to listen to the whole thing -- I may not have quite managed it yet -- because I keep re-listening to certain tracks. Four Knocks and The New Doctor have really distracted me, and to a lesser extent so have Of Water Borne and The Clouds Pass (which I like on the album because it's slightly different from the transmission version: the choir sings throughout the whole cue on TV, but it joins in about halfway through on the album version).

Stupendous album. It'd be very hard to pick one album over another in a "stranded on a desert island with a single album" scenario, but it might have to be this one if it came down to it. Wonderful album.

I'm genuinely intrigued to know where the second half of Vale was originally intended to slot into the episode. I know that the Song for Ten reprise was initially intended for the scene with Rose (I guess I can understand why the director wanted Rose's Theme instead) but I honestly have no clue where the second half of Vale might have gone. Sounds like it could have been used in place of The Clouds Pass, actually.

Night Terror
10-04-2010, 07:32 PM

Hmmm... does anyone feel that the new part of 'Vale' seems really cut and paste? Like, really choppy - as if they only recorded about 25 seconds of material then just kept looping it... it seems really amateur because I can hear where they've just cut/pasted the exact same part onto the end of the first part... and it ends really really abruptly as well...

Hmm. I dunno.

Keevan

I feel quite disappointed that some of the Waters of Mars tracks were left out -- specifically the action music where the robot brings the Tardis to the base right before the nuclear explosion, and also the piece a few minutes later the spooky violins accompany the "Timelord Victorious is wrong" speech.

Did I miss them on some other track though? Past DW OST releases are quite choppy with clips and the titles often don't match with which episode it necessarily featured in.

I can hear the hard cuts you're talking about in the track, but I think that might be deliberate, because it's not a simple loop job as the percussion changes significantly over the course of the track.

First off, many many thanks to Tango and Bloated Barrell for the uploads!

No, they were new pieces for those scenes specifically. And I agree, I was especially looking forward to those two you mentioned.

Doubtful that they'll appear on the Series 5 soundtrack, seeing as neither one made a single appearance since that episode (aside from the action one being in the End of Time). Still, I'm abundantly happy with the rest of the music on the Specials soundtrack. Gold is nothing short of a genius..

Wow I thought the thread would balloon a bit. Well I've had a chance to listen to most of the album now and think that my favorite tracks so far are "Gallifrey" "The Cat Burglar", "The Council of the Time Lords", "The Master Suite", and "The Next Doctor". I will echo thoughts from Babydoll that I'm more eager for the series five soundtrack than I was this one but as always this is fantastic music. Thank you again for posting it.

Thanks a lot for the link! I can't seem to stop listening to this :p The cue that plays when the Doctor chases the Master through the, uh, wasteland(?) in The End of Time doesn't seem to be on the album, though. Ah, too bad :( Still, wonderful soundtrack.

There is indeed a great deal missing; and on a two disc set with 50 minutes of unused space, I really cannot begin to understand why. In a world where people almost expect a degree of completeness (particularly when the set is advertised as such - for The End Of Time, at least) and will complain if they don't see it... why not just stick the damn music on the CD and be happy?

Anyway, this album comes as a great disappointment to me, after listening. With a handful of individual exceptions - notably Vale Decem, Lithuania (a lovely piece with shamefully lazy orchestration) the relentless march toward Doctor Who becoming just another faceless MV score with fluffy arrangements continues apace. Every other cue has the orchestra almost drowned out by some cliched percussive slamming, and the brief segments that aren't seem to be a bunch of orchestral gestures held together with sod all. Where are the strong themes, like Rose's Theme, Martha's Theme, Cassandra's Waltz, etc, etc, etc? As my fiancee remarked, "It sounds great, but it's completely hollow."

There's probably thirty minutes of servicable stuff in total here - the rest of it is pretty pointless IMHO of course.

Oh well - all good things, and all that. Can I really be the only person on the planet who thinks Gold should go away now?

I reckon Gold is at the apex of his greatness on the show, and the Specials album features among some of his best work. But then I was a drummer in my younger life, long before I picked up a guitar or keyboard, so I'm quite pleased by the heavy percussion used throughout The End of Time. There isn't enough percussion in Murray's work on Doctor Who.

I've got a fever. And the only prescription, is more (cowbell) percussion. :D

Really the only thing that disappoints me about this album is that it isn't full up. And I was sad that the synth guitar that backed A Special Kind of Bus in the TV version is missing. Apart from that, I love it.

tangotreats
10-05-2010, 10:30 AM
You made all that up just to shoehorn in a joke about cowbell.

Well done. ;)

I have utmost respect for drummers and drums - but I do not have respect for people who take the modern symphony orchestra - the most powerful, expressive, versatile instrument ever devised - and rather than use it intelligently, they take the easy way out and slather "epic" drums over everything. Percussion can be used intelligently and there's no shortage of traditional symphonic percussion instruments - timpani, snares, cymbals, bass drum, etc - so what's with the repetitive slamming and banging on every cue? I'll tell you - it's a sign that a composer or an orchestrator is lacking the skill (or believes he is lacking the skill) to properly utilise the 80 musicians sitting in front of him. To my ears, it sounds cheesy, lazy, stupid, and designed (as so many things are today) to appeal to the lowest common denominator. The same sort of people who think that the more banging percussion a track has, the more epic it is; and that a repetitive MV power anthem in 4/4 time loaded to the gunnels with synth brass, unison bass strings, and large choir singing absolutely nothing but "ah ah ah ah" is the pinnacle of melodic writing.

THIS is how you write a prominent percussion part and do it well: Carl Nielsen's 4th Symphony http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VFn2Pt3m8Q

Doctor Who is nowhere near as bad as it could be... but it could be so much better. Remember we're talking about the series that pioneered experimental electronic scores, small ensemble scores, etc... and now, like almost all Hollywood scores, it tries to win on volume and noise level alone.

What a fine place this is where we can present alternative opinions, disagree, and still be civil. Three cheers for this thread. (And the rigid digit to some other threads where this sort of dissent would be met with the most vicious of rebuttal.)

Peace, ladies and gentlemen. :)

It is nice enough. As an album, it feels odd, but remember each special needed it's own sound and feel, and throwing bits of that all together is bound to feel disjointed. Frankly, one reason I was more eager for series 5, is that I don't really recall much of the specials music, it seemed very generic as a whole. I dug some of the action cues from waters of mars, but they are not here. And of course, the Master's thees, and strange, strange creatures, but really nothing new really stood out for me. And, with revolving companions, not a lot of time or opportunity to really develop many strong character themes...another reaqson the specials were..off for me, no set companions. Anyway, I was far more aware of, and pleased by, the music from series 5. I think the specials format pretty much threw everything off, at least for me.

Murray's Who score has always been a bit bombastic, and frenetic though, and at first, did not entice me. It grew on me, after i really listened to the first album. Which I originally bought just for the new theme....I like the unit theme, actually, and Boe's. Alas, neither of those has really returned as of late. I do agree though, that the modern sound is light years away from what was going on in the original series' scores. Not better or worse, just very, very different, likely to match up better with the increased pace of story telling. Instead of a 6 part serial, with long stretches of moody music and visuals, long periods of unscored dialog, we get 40 mins of run, bang, boom. Fast action, fast talking, and loud, fast music....Murray's style is fine for the new look, really...

YES. Somebody earlier mentioned that bit of action music in Wates of Mars. That was GREAT. The score was awfully low key until that moment... then the crew hatch their plan to escape and suddenly this big Goldsmithian action cue kicks in. The previous half an hour built up the tension and that released it. Where is it? Not on this blasted CD, that's where! ;)

I have to agree with the rest of Babydoll's comments as well. The series 5 music seems to be a lot more mature - the specials are incredibly hyperactive. They are, after all, RTD on steroids. Moffat's stories have room to breathe and so do the scores that accompany them.

My favourite Who score of all time was Silence in the Library. The perfect mix of everything.

I really miss pieces like "I'm Coming To Get You", "Rose Defeats The Daleks" and "Hologram". That's what Who is all about. A strong melodic presence, shamelessly old-fashioned harmonies (1:40 to 1:51 in Hologram wouldn't have been out of place in the 1940s) and joyous, glittering orchestrations. Those pieces worked on so many levels - and reminded us all that when something big and heroic is happening on the screen, it's not at all a bad thing to have a big, heroic theme playing in the score.

Did Dr. Matt, or anyone, ever do a rip of the special's scores, in particular Waters of Mars? As a whole, that story was my fave of them all. I liked the darkness and moodiness of it, a true entry of horror sci-fi from Who.Some of the Library music has been ripped, I know, but not very well. That is another story I would have wanted more from. That, and 42...

The lack of the song from when The Master Race is born is glaring, but aside from that, I can't even think of complaining about this.

Dalekdude did music rips of episodes from series five and The End of Time that can be found earlier in the thread which are terrific and held us through until the release of the disc. I understand people's reactions to missing music, it can be a frustrating thing when a favorite cue isn't included on the album for whatever reason. I'm just grateful that we finally are getting these after a long wait. I personally think that Gold's best album (prior to series five in which he redeemed himself) was series three. His bombastic stuff can get a bit tedious at times and overshadow his lighter, intimate motifs but they're still a great thrill to listen to.

I believe Dr. Matt concentrates solely on Classic Doctor Who, and in particular, where music exists on isolated DVD scores or (as is the case with the Gunfighters) as an extra on the narrated soundtracks. I completely agree with your sentiments about Gold's work of late. Series 5 seems much more on the nose than the Specials, in fact I consider Series 5 some of Gold's best work.

Hey guys, just a quick word from me.
Sorry for not being around for the past month or two but i've had a few other projects to work on and I've really been focussing on music from the 'Halo' videogames over the last couple of weeks.
Thank you guys so much for the specials soundtrack, i hope to get a CD copy soon when i have 10 spare. After listening through the soundtrack i think it'ss great! But i have to say I'm slightly disapointed as alot of the best cues are missing, for instance i would have loved to hear a full version of the 'UNIT Rocks (Reprise)' which is heard in 'Planet Of The Dead'. I'm also dissapointed that there was very little music from' The Waters Of Mars' as I really love the music for this episode. So as a result i have stopped work on all my other projects and I'm concentrating on finishing off and improving the complete 'Waters Of Mars' OST which i started a few months ago. Hopefully this will only take a week or two and I shall upload it as soon as it is finished. I'm also soon going to be uploading the soundtrack for 'The Invasion' as I have now finished this. Plus I am aware that I haven't yet completed all of the series 5 soundtracks but I shall continue with these after I have finished 'The Waters Of Mars', plus I will be begining work on a soundtrack for 'Forest Of The Dead'. I know as well that i promised a complete list of my scores and haven't yet uploaded one but I'll do this asap.

Well shall see , but it would be a interesting direction for the Doctor to go, I like it that after the regeneration to Matt he thought he was a girl for a second, kinda playing homage to the rumors that he would be a girl that time.

She has a sonic screwdriver , I dont buy that he gave it to me jazz, remember she lies too.
She knows how to fly a TARDIS, the Doctor would never show anyone how to fly his TARDIS.
We know from the past shows that the Doctors 12th is bad.
She is in it mostly for herself and all she cared about was the Doctors well being.
She loves the Doctor but also hates him.
She doesnt like good , referring to her comment about all the good wizards turn out to be him and she didnt like that.
I think the man she kills is indeed The Doctor so she either takes his place or somehow becomes him.

Fascinating list of possibilities!

Though if I were Doctor 12 or 13 or whatever, I think I would be trying to keep my distance from Doctors 10 and 11 rather than turning up at every conceivable opportunity in order to drop some vague hints as to my identity and then clear off again... I would find it incredibly uncomfortable having to interact with earlier copies of myself and would make a concerted effort to stay out of the way at any cost. I would also find it hard to sacrifice "being the Doctor" in the way that River would have to in order to conceal her true nature. I wonder if it is possible for Doctor X to disguise him/herself that well that even the Doctor himself doesn't suspect. Or maybe he does and he's just keeping his mouth shut and getting on with business.

Do you think you would recognise yourself if you'd been regenerated? Even with a different face, and some extra personality traits, it's still you in there... And nobody knows you better than you know yourself.

Questions, questions! That's one of the reasons I love New Who. :) [Even if I think some of the more recent scores are rubbish...]

Hey, Moonie..I'd point out several companions have been known to fly the TARDIS...Tegan Nyssa, Adric. Don't forget all the companions at once just recently...River is not the Doc, I don't think. BUT, there is nothing to say she is not a Time Lady, I suppose. Actually, Tegan started to learn how to fly the TARDIS on her own, via an automated manual....though I think later it was revealed the Master was behind that somehow. Nyssa seemed quite at home with it's various functions though, and the 5th Doc seemed to be quite happy to encourage her....

I'd have to go back and look. I do not need to rely on re-runs, I have the entire (available) collection on vhs and dvd. Only missing those stories that are..err..missing..:(

Yea I did think of some of those times but I was thinking more of flying it like the Doctor does. Its was a entertaining thought but as you and others have pointed out , many loop holes, :)
Maybe some time Ill tell ya how I linked The Island from Lost and Doctor Who together.

yea Tegan was quite disappointed when the Doctor told her that it was a pre program made by the Master to fly the TARDIS. They would have ended up at Castrovalva no matter what she or Nyssa did and the Doctor was quite impressed with Nyssa so he could have been encouraging her to better talents.

The Peter Davison Doctor is one of my favorites and the New Beginnings dvd set are 3 of my favorite episodes.

I loved Time Crash and I liked it that his 5th incarnation of the Doctor was his (Tennant's Doctor) favorite.

Course, according to Rivr, The Doc doesn't really KNOW how to fly the TARDIS, and that jives with earlier comments about that. AND with the fact that he stole a broken one, that he really had no idea how to fix, or fly--remember, the first Doc never did get Barbara and Ian back home, the used a Dalek time capsule instead.....

However, River does know an aweful lot about the TARDIS, and Time Lords in general. Remember though, when she tried to escape the exploding TARDIS, and was trapped, her last thought was "sorry my love". I will point out too, that "killing" the Doc may not kill kill him. She may have gone along with a plan to sacrifice him for a greater purpose, and causing a regeneration. Authorities may not know that the Doc survived....Who knows. hahah.

I'm so ashamed... I've never seen a single episode of classic Who, so all the people you're talking about are absolute mysteries to me... I really, really need to get on to watching them.

IN other news, I've just finished re-watching The End Of Time, which I have now decided I enjoyed after initially hating it the first time... perhaps it has something to do with the fact that I was trying to cook New Year's dinner for five people at the same time as watching it. What really stuck out is this: Almost all the most memorable music from it is missing from this album. Not just a few bits here and there, but just about every single bloody worthwhile piece. Speeding To Earth, for instance - it stops just as the cue gets good. Wilf jumps in to the laser canon at about 1:00, and in the episode, it launches off into a wonderful, almost balletic two minute orchestral action piece. On the album, it stops about fifteen seconds in. Time and time again I was getting this whilst watching the episode. Try it. It's despicable. There is actually a really fine score in that episode, but you wouldn't know it from the fragmentary crap on the album - I don't wish to seem ungrateful or unkind, but whoever selected the tracks for this album (whether it be Gold or somebody else) needs to get a severe smack in the head.

A SHAME. Not impressed.

I dont believe Susan is really his granddaughter if I remember correctly in the 5 doctors she said she just calls him that as kind of a endearing thing.
He has to run into his "daughter" sometime I keep hoping for a episode with that.

:)

Im not too harsh on music in cases like that , if it sounds good to my ears I like it fine, I know they change music around in movies and tv shows all the time, so I guess Im used to it, just me :)

Can somebody upload the itunes tracks to somewhere other than megaupload as it seems I cannot access it lately due to some "elevated number of requests from my ip address" (which is odd considering I hardly ever use it...) anyway upload would be greatly appreciated :)

My only complaint is that the album is not at all representative of the music in the episode. Chosing crap cues over excellent ones consistently across the album is pretty bad - but on a two disc set with almost an hour of empty space, it's absolutely unforgivable. (Yes, I know not everybody thinks they're crap - of course, that's a matter of opinion. In my mind, they have put on simplistic crowd pleasers and left off the music. Regardless of whoever is right or wrong, having such a massive amount of music missing when there is a) no reuse fee and b) lots of free space on the disc, is just a poor show. ON the part of the album producers... Laziness? Stupidity? Both? Can anybody else suggest another reason? :/

Moonie - I think DazDude is referring to the Bonus tracks, which aren't in that upload...

Oops! Quite right, there it is. OK, there's one of the missing cues! (And what the hell is it doing as a bonus track? Cutting a cue right down the middle and putting half of it on the CD and half of it as a "bonus" download, costing still more money? OK, it's only 1.58 for the bonus tracks but that is not the point. Yet another example of POOR SHOW. Whatever happened to the British sense of fair play? When I go down the chippie, I do not expect to pay for fish and chips, get given fish, and have the chef tell me that the chips are a bonus which I have to buy online for more money... :(

[/COLOR]Yea, I understand tango's thoughts. After following the battle to get this album out, and all of Gold's tweets, we--ot at least I--got the impression this was gonna be a doozy of a set, but alas, it does seem to be just another poorly produced, cheaply made slapped together piece. But, at least we do have what we have

@moonie: Susan may have said that in one episode, but it was a throwaway line, in a time where they were re-inventing the Doc's backstory. The first Doc swore time and again she was his granddaughter, as did she. Course, we do know the 1rst Doc was a serial liar..But, the Doc did have family, did have a wife, in the past, almost all of the other regenerations have mentioned them in some form...

Here's a slightly irrelevant comment:

I found this site (Watch Doctor Who episodes. (http://www.doctorwho-episodes.com/)) last year when I had a brief re-obsession with old Dr Who during my year 12 finals. It's not a credit card-requiring site, or anything, and in fact my only gripe with it is that each episode is split into about 3, 10 minute parts.

Hope this helps you guys who were looking for classic Who!

Chances are we don't have a track list yet because it simply hasn't been finalized. If the rumors about Murray pushing for a two disc set for series 5 are true, I imagine he's been pushing for it for well over a month, and things could be sorted out by now but the track list has yet to be finalized as the content balloons beyond a single disc. The track list could continue to fluctuate all the way up to the point that the discs are pressed.

I really don't see how they'd be able to make two discs... I mean, half of the time the same music was played in every episode.

EDIT: BTW, do we have any lyrics on We Shall Farewell?

The Doctor
10-06-2010, 04:55 PM
They do record a couple of hours of new music per series. It may not seem like it when it's spread over 13 45 minute episodes, but they did double duty this year because they wanted to minimize reuse from previous years (the show's tone was a lot different this year, and Murray wanted to reflect that with the music. The show's look went from bright neons to more muted earth tones, and the music reflects that as well.)

Heck, just the nine tracks of series 5 material from the Proms runs 46 minutes on its own. That's a little over half a disc right there. There's a lot of stuff that didn't appear at the Proms -- I can think of a number of cues from Vincent and the Doctor, The Lodger, The Eleventh Hour, The Beat Below, and Vampires in Venice that I'd quite like to have.

The thing about the music this year is that a lot of it doesn't "pop" like it did during the RTD era. It's still quite good and exciting, but the mixing is different and the overall tone is a little more muted. I actually had to re-watch episodes specifically to listen to the musical cues and get a feel for them. There's a world of new material, certainly more than enough to fill a two disc set.

Oh, and my favorite "big" cue is still Final Days. What with all that pounding percussion, it was really a foregone conclusion. :naughty:

Well I finished listening to the entire album last night and I must say that this is now my second favorite Gold soundtrack after series three. Just some phenomenal music included in the album. I mentioned my early favorites but I would be remiss if I didn't mention "Victorian Christmas" (gotta love Christmas music of any kind) "The Cat Burglar", "Lithuania" (which I swear has a few notes of Captain Jack's theme in it). If this was meant to be a warm up for the series five soundtrack Murray has succeeded once again. Great stuff.

The website mentioned above is pretty much how I viewed Series Five this year. It uploaded new episodes pretty much the same day that it aired in the UK which is fantastic. Will be hitting it up when "Father Who?" airs on Christmas.

The art work of Series 5 CD has been on Amazon UK for a good month now.

To me, the cover is not very impressive, if tht what they were going to go for as it looked like a cut and paste job.

If they going for a cut and past job, then they should had employed "Clayton Hickman" to do the job as some of his graphic work is damm good.

Well then people failed to post it here and appease me!! I never said it was impressive looking. Cover art is supposed to be generic and bland any way. I think it represents the rest of the series soundtracks which have always featured the Doctor and his companion on the cover, normally running forward. Sometimes I do wish they would hire artists but that'd be too expensive and too much effort for the Beeb to do.

As far as the cover art goes, it's nothing special. It's cover art. I'm not buying this to stare at the booklet; I'm buying it for the music. For all I care the cover could be a piece of white paper with "Dr Who Soundtrack Series 5" written on it in pencil.

As far as the BBC goes.. they have sod all to do with this. They licence the music to Silva Screen and Silva do everything else. I wish I knew why the BBC were so reticent to releasing soundtracks; 99% of their shows don't get any sort of release at all, and of those that do, 99% of them are licensed on a speciality label. IE, BBC receive lots of money, some other company does all the work and takes the risk. Oh well... :)

Has anyone considered recording the show using zoom or something similar? Might be something people shoiuld consider? And now I see someone beat me to it. Whoops!

Still, it looks epic. Can't wait to hear it. There's a metric shit ton of music from the final two parter on there, and I get the feeling this may be a little more packed than the specials discs. Although I have to confess that some of the middle episodes of the season seem to have gotten very few tracks. But that's a small niggle. It's way more than we'd have gotten on a single disc!

I hope Doctor Who XI is an extended version of the opening theme and not just the opening titles edit.

So we are going for a 2 disc release and it's got a good mix of music.

Shame that Amy's choice only got two peices of music as i would had liked to seen more.

The Padorical Opens/The Big Bang get the lion share of music on Disc 2, but with twenty-one tracks across this two part story, it does look am bit over kill to me, and this may be because it wasn't the best story of the series for me.

Never the less, 9 from amzon for the CD makes it a sound investment.

Keep in mind that some of the tracks from the final two parter may have been utilized in earlier episodes, so they may be tracks people were expecting but with different placement (I seem to recall that All the Strange Strange Creatures was a cue intended to be first heard in 42, but it was such a popular cue that it shows up throughout the third series in the run-up to 42. I think it's first used properly in Gridlock.)

For example, if it's on the disc, I reckon that weird discordant piece used when Amy finds the ring at the end of The Lodger will turn up in the final two-parter music, as it's used in those episodes right before the cliffhanger of The Pandorica Opens (it'll probably be in the track Amy and Rory, or The Life and Death of Amy Pond).

I'm really glad there are five tracks from Vincent and the Doctor. I love the motif Murray wrote for Vincent. Oddly enough, it reminds me of Kingdom Hearts.

I hope "I Remember You" has that weird sort of reversed sounding music used when Amy rushes up to the TARDIS and knocks on the door. It's used again in that scene when River and the Doctor are talking in front of the TARDIS right before the end. Love that. Very haunting.

@SpikeRevell Same here (about the theme). Ever since the 1&2 disc, I've always been waiting for the other Gold arrangements to get such a great extension as v1's Album Version. The worrying thing, however, is that the signs so far make this unlikely. First, the version uploaded to the website is only the 'full' closing version, yet is described purely as "the new theme", and the Proms version simply stitches the opening arrangement onto the start of the closing arrangement. I hope I'm wrong, that the Proms version was following in the 'Celebration' mould (the live arrangement of v1.5 was designed just like the 2010 Proms version), and that they put up the full closing simply because they didn't want to put the CD arrangement out months early and for free.

I await the track timings with crossed fingers.

Incidentally, does anyone happen to know the name of the mellow song that plays while Amy and Rory are slow dancing at the wedding? That's a song, not score, but I haven't found a title yet.

I am a very happy bunny right now. Like Babydoll, I was looking forward to the fifth series OST more than the Specials. So in the space of a month (assuming it has not been put back/will be put back) we have had four disc of new Dr Who music!

This announcement has really made my day. Thankyou SpikeRevell for the tracklisting.

Do we know yet whether it was a source (i.e. they got it from someone else) or if it was specially composed (like Song for Ten, Love Don't Roam or The Stowaway)?

The Doctor
10-12-2010, 07:30 PM
I'm almost positive it was source and not written by Murray (I imagine it'd be on the soundtrack if it were an original song. All of his songs have been thus far.)

---------- Post added at 01:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:28 PM ----------

Finally found 'em. The song when the Doctor is doing his crazy dance is Crazy Little Thing Called Love, by Queen. The song when Amy and Rory are slow dancing is You Give Me Something, by James Morrison.

What really got me more excited about the series 5 disc than the specials disc (I spent the whole time I listened to it thinking about the 5 disc) is that there's so much good stuff in 5 that even if a lot of it gets cut for bizarre reasons, it's guaranteed there'll still be stuff that doesn't. It's not like the specials, where most is relatively forgettable with some stand-out moments, they'd literally have to be actively TRYING to only put out filler, and even then they wouldn't be able to get to a second disc. In short: rejoice!

I was completely obsessed with the Specials soundtrack, I just love it!
But 2 CD's for Series 5 are one of the greatest news on the history of Earth!! November seems not so far, hope they don't delay it 2 weeks too.

I have a feeling the wait for the series 5 CD won't be so bad, as I've been waiting less. The Specials album was a long time coming, and I'm still absorbing it in full. So hopefully waiting for the series 5 album won't feel like pulling teeth sans anesthesia.

I've just pre-ordered the series 5 discs, but I didn't do it at Silva. Bizarrely, their website has decided to start declining our card. Never had trouble in the past, this is an altogether new issue. Had to order it through Amazon.co.uk instead. Amazon is only charging me 7.62, and a couple of quid for shipping. I'm paying a grand total of 10.70 ($17.11 USD), which has got to be about the cheapest I've ever gotten one of these albums imported.

Pleased by the price, but worried it won't get here for a week after the release date (Amazon predicts it'll arrive between the 15th and 19th of November).

I've ordered from them in the past, and they do tend to get stuff out pretty fast -- particularly considering I live in the colonies -- but I've never pre-ordered anything before. I hope they'll ship it a couple of days prior to release, like Silva Screen does.

I ordered the Specials soundtrack on the sat before release.

During Sunday, I got the standard your package has been sent with the following items you also ordered and here is tracking number.

Got home Monday, the soundtrack was there on the actual day of release.

Then this package came via couier and not royal snail mail.

My order status for Series 5 soundtrack says that delivery is by 10th Nov, although i paid for 1st class shipping.

I might have to cancel this order and go to Play instead as i know that they do dispatch before release.

The preview for Doctor Who XI plays the lead up to the middle eight, the middle eight, and then the final outro. It sounds exactly like the second half of the 1 min version put up on the BBC website, so sadly it looks like no 'album version' this time.
