Ok folks, here's the final two albums of previously unreleased music from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop:
A great album with an African feel, mostly by Peter Howell. When listening to this, I heard shades of 3 of his Doctor Who scores: Snakedance, Planet of Fire and The Two Doctors - all with scenes set in hot dusty places.
Africa [MP3 128/320]:

And lastly...
A collection of music that paints pictures from five continents, by a variety of radiophonic composers.

Will Death to the Daleks have one like Silurians did and Revenge of the Cybermen didn't? Don't know yet.
BTW thanks for the RWS set.

According to Doctor Who Magazine No. 446, Death to The Daleks does indeed include an isolated score. I know that this isn't everybody's could of tea but personally I've always loved this score from the late Carey Blyton.

I thought I'd re-upped the fixed version with only 1 track 4, but peeje is refusing to list these uploads, so I can't check. Just downloaded it to check, and the fix is:
1: Delete this track: 04 - Peter Howell - African Images- Ghanean Fast Drum 2.mp3
2: Rename track 3: 03 - Peter Howell - African Images- Ghanean Fast Drum 2.mp3
3: If you are fussy, also correct the info in the id3 tag for track 3 - change artist to Peter Howell
and track title to African Images: Ghanean Fast Drum 2
Apologies for this - I will try again to re-up the fixed version.

It's probably relevant that the preceding Xmas Special had a big selling singing star featured on the soundtrack, without her I doubt it would have got an individual release.
Do you know, that's a very good point, and one I hadn't thought of. I guess there will not be a stand-alone release for TDTWATW. Sigh.

Well, wasn't the previous special the first one to get it's own album? we were spoiled with a 2cd release for the season, and a separate X-Mas special album. That has not been the norm though. I don't think that it is an automatically done deal...

This comprises 2 discs - an extended version of the official Silva Screen release, with added introductory excerpt (the song That's the Way to the Zoo full-length version), opening and closing theme music, a selection of sound effects, and 3 extra music cues not included on the official release (inserted where appropriate from the DVD isolated score). DrMatt - big thanks for Ghost Light and the Cavendish albums, and I'm looking forward to your treatments of the forthcoming Dominic Glynn and Carey Blyton soundtracks. Petty grumble about your State of Decay soundtrack album though - there's a short cue missing between track 3 (The Time of Selection) and track 4 (One Inhabited Planet) which on TV segues between Ivo's hut ("It's finished - go!") and the first TARDIS scene ("Well, Doctor?"). Apologies for seeming so churlish - it only lasts about ten seconds, for heaven's sake - but I thought you'd like to know.

@moontrekker yeah that was my first thought too. A lot of discussion seems to be that we might get a new theme for the western episode...I wouldn't be surprised if we got a new western cue for "I am the Doctor" as well. Of course this might be Murray just goofing around as well. He had a sly smile just briefly when he finished playing lol.

Wow - good on you for picking up on such a thing - want to be my proof-listener? ;) As for the missing cue - there are two possibilities. Either the same cue comes up later in the soundtrack, and I deleted the first occurence, or it got accidentally cut from the album. (Coughs) This did happen occasionally in the early days, hence various re-releases of some of my earliest albums. If you are 100% certain the cue doesn't come up elsewhere, I'll move State of Decay to the top of the list for 'revisiting'.
OK - a random album for you here - the Dr. Who and the Daleks / Daleks: Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. soundtrack CD, but a different 'cut' to the official release. When the album first came out, I noticed some track divides happening a bit too late, with many tracks containing several cues (and/or sound effects for the second movie). So this version has a lot more track divides than the official release, so it is easier to isolate various cues/effects.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my niggles. State of Decay was the first story I audio-recorded in its entirety on first transmission, mainly because of Paddy's splendid music, so I'm more intimately acquainted with its soundtrack than I'll usually admit to in polite company;). I know there are at least two repeated cues, both contained within your Track 12 ('The Arising is at Hand'), but I'm reasonably certain the cue I'm on about is unique. No urgent need for a revisit though - I have the DVD after all, and plenty of your other albums to work my way through. Keep up the excellent work.

COMING SOON: The Seeds of Doom (Special COMPLETE Edition Soundtrack)
I've just finished doing all the mixing work for 'The Seeds of Doom' special edition soundtrack. I've been meaning to do this for ages, thinking it would be a simple job of using the official CD release for the mixed version, and add a second 'unmixed' disc. But after discovering over 20 minutes of cues on the isolated score cut from the official CD release (and 2 minutes 40 seconds of material on the official CD release not on the isolated score) I decided to go for a complete mixed version, using the isolated score, and inserting original material from the official CD release. I've still got to burn and rip the discs, and do the CD art. I hope to get this finished over the next days.

No SE available as yet - done in the days before I did an unmixed second disc. As I recall, the story has over 100 cues (like every Peter Moffatt directed story) and needed a lot of mixing to make it a listenable soundtrack. By contrast, Castrovalva only has about 30 cues, and barely no mixing was required. Both stories are high on the list for revisiting - Logopolis will be first. Give it a month or two.

Dude, stop posting a request every day - besides this is Doctor Who music, we dont know a thing about anime as far as I can tell.
DrMatt: Thanks for all the amazing work - I was sadly to busy to reupload everything but I see that has been taken care of for the most part. Good thing also considering most of the scores I have changed for my own collection by removing artworks and altering the titles (nothing mayor, just cutting the artists out of it) so I was unable to give exactly the same files again.

BBC Radiophonic Workshop: Undersea World
A collection of music from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop never commercially released. Found on Spotify as a 41 track album, after further investigation of the supplier's website discovered 23 more tracks not available on Spotify, but available to preview in full (and download via RealPlayer) on their website. So some tracks are 320kbps from Spotify, others 128kbps from the website. The first of five albums (the rest over the next few weeks). CD art done by a friend of mine. Enjoy.

Doctor Who: The Seeds of Doom (Special Edition Soundtrack)
Although this score has had an official CD release (alongside 'Terror of the Zyogns'), over 20 minutes of material was edited from the official release, which included nearly 2 minutes of material not used in the final edit of the story, and not included on the DVD isolated score.
So this 'special edition' is the complete soundtrack of this story, including the unused cues, inserted into the isolated score at the correct points. Stereo ambiance has been applied, and tracks mixed together where appropriate. The second disc has the cues in mono as presented on the DVD, without the unused cues.
When putting this together, I referred to Mark Ayres extensive online notes on this score, compiled when he put together the official CD release. It lists all the cues, with extra info as to what is going on in the story, what cues are repeated, etc. If you are interested:
Doctor Who - Geoffrey Burgon - Terror of the Zygons (
http://markayres.rwsprojects.co.uk/burgon.htm)
There were only a few repeated cues, which I have deleted from the score, except tracks 23 and 24 on CD2, where both cues start with the same 28 seconds. It was impossible to isolate the different sections, so I left them as they were. On the mixed CD, there was an extra section of 'unused' music that allowed me to bridge the gap, and include both endings of the 2 cues.
One cue is repeated at half speed. I have left out the half-speed version on the mixed CD, but both are included on CD2 (tracks 32 and 38).
Enjoy!

Nothing that I recall. But a friend said something similar when comparing my rip of a Murray Gold CD with the MP3s he downloaded from Silva Screen. The likely explanation is that when I convert my MP3s, I switch off 'filter low frequencies' on iTunes. These are bass frequencies we can't actually hear - but can feel. Most MP3 converters automatically filter these low frequencies, and it makes a significant difference to the sound quailty or 'richness' as you say. But most CD rips available online, even those purchased from official websites, will be filtered this way.
Re: 'Dragonfire' - not out til next week (I just have some nice friends). Looking like a really tricky one - 2 music tracks and 1 effects track all mixed into one, so there are a lot of background effects, some underneath the music cues. That and lots of camp cafe music... I might tackle 'Happiness Patrol' first.

Some good unexpected news...
The Special Edition DVD release of 'Vengeance on Varos' is not only coming with a new 5.1 surround track, but with 2 isolated scores - stereo and 5.1 surround. Given that this is the first DVD to come with a 5.1 surround isolated score, Mark Ayres must be working some serious magic wit his 5.1 mix to justify it. Roll on September!

Why not have a go yourself? All you need is the DVD and some free software, Audacity/DVD Audioripper software. Since the actual score isn't out there it's just a case of having a go.

Doctor Who: The Happiness Patrol

Compiled from the isolated score, gallery and deleted scenes on the BBC DVD.
ALBUM NOTES:
I isolated the first cue from the opening theme by using an identical section of music from later on in the score. For the last cue of the story, I used a near identical section from the gallery (the stereo placement of the instruments was slightly different).
Some cues have been mixed together to form longer tracks, where it was thematically and/or musically appropriate.
Many cues had very abrupt mixes into different cues (especially lift music and harmonica solos). I have separated cues where this happens, using a combination of reverb and using other identical sections of the score.
There were two long sections of 'lift music' near the beginning of the score, both starting with some incidental music. A long section of these cues were identical, so I merged all original material from both tracks.
I have applied reverb to many of the solo harmonica cues, as many of them were plain studio recordings with no ambiance or reverb, making them sound very at odds with the harmonica sections within other tracks which did have reverb.
I have included more excerpts than usual, taken from the deleted scenes on the DVD. These scenes were undubbed, so where necessary I have added background music. I have included the two bursts of Sylvester McCoy singing the blues (before and after the accompanying harmonica cue) and the Doctor and Earl Sigma busking with spoons and harmonica. Only the tail end of this scene was used on TV, and only this short section of harmonica music is on the isolated score. So I have replaced it with the full-length 'live' version. The Doctor slapping his spoons on the arse of the guy walking by doesn't quite come across on audio, but it's still a great track!
There were a few sections of repeated cues - I removed all but one. The beginning of the cue that opens the story is reused later on when the Doctor meets Silas P, but both cues mix into different cues. Apart from it being impossible to isolate without losing a few seconds of music, the music that follows the second occurrence needs the intro to 'work' imho.
Dominic Glynn's finest score for 'Doctor Who' imho - it was a pleasure putting this together. I hope you enjoy it!
Sorry for the delay - I've been battling flu this past week. And also apologies for no Peeje link or FLAC. Peeje is playing up, and I have no blank discs to burn and rip FLAC from. Both with follow when possible.

Cheers mate. Re previous version version of 'Happiness Patrol' - nothing to do with me. Being a bit of a sound quality freak, I only work from isolated scores. There are a lot of McCoy scores out there at 128kbps (definitely not good enough for a stereo score imho) - bootlegs from the original master tapes. Not sure where they came from. The bootleg of 'Happiness Patrol' differs from the isolated score in that cues that mix abrubtly into other cues are left intact. Where possible, I have re-created these track divides. I don't thing the bootleg included the harmonica solos or lift music, but I could be wrong - long time since I heard it.
N.B. I've posted a fix for the CD notes above.

DrMatt is quite right! I uploaded the original version which was indeed a bootleg from a copy given away by the composer in the 80s, and DrMatt's version is far superior and more enjoyable (thanks, DM!). There were a number of promos given away by different composers during this period of the show, most of which I have uploaded here. The only one to escape me was Paradise Towers, which I have never been able to track down, but there is enough evidence to verify its existence. The DVD for that story does not contain an isolated score, but I understand from people more knowledgeable than me that there is a method to extract it because of the (uniquely) multi-soundtrack presentation. In the meantime, if anyone has a copy of Paradise Towers promo, it would be lovely to hear it.

Here's an album I put together comprising of:
- The fantastic Radio 4 play Blue Veils & Golden Sands: a very touching docudrama about the life and works of Delia Derbyshire with music (in the style of Delia) by Elizabeth Parker. Includes a wonderful scene describing how she created the 'Doctor Who' theme - and Ron Grainer's response upon first hearing what she had created from his written score. (Sampled from CD, but with my own track titles/divides)
- A selection of Delia's music (22 tracks compiled from various BBC Radiophonic Workshop CDs)

Thanks Scotty. I enjoyed making the covers for these more than usual. Most of the time when I do covers it is to match other releases covers, so all I'm really doing is copying/recreating some one elses design, which gives me satisfaction when it matches, but here I got to do my own ideas :)
I love piano music and these were just great. The pianist hasn't done the Doctor Who theme which was a shame. I found a good one, but didn't want to use it because it was by someonelse and it didn't feel right to include it, plus it would have made it too long to fit onto a CD.

It is very self satisfying when you can make something that is very beautiful and others agree you did a wonderful job. I to love piano music as well, it brings a clam to my inner self. Pat yourself on the back! Well done my friend...

Peeje links are not dwnloadable all of the time, as you would know if you'd been on the forum for any length of time. You need to try periodically.

Recently the new doctor who game was released: The Eternity Clock. Now there is a retail version of it for PS3 but has anyone had a go at extracting the music from the game? i know its possible to extract the music files from PS3 and Xbox games through rips but im not sure how and i dont have a PS3. I have to wait for PC which has not been released yet.
I ask if anyone can do it because there are peices of unreleased music which include the time of angels cliffhanger music which is a variation of I Am The Doctor (The action version that everyone wanted) aswell as some music from Amy's choice. And with the possibly of 2 more games in the pipeline we could get more music that missed the offical soundtrack release too.
What does everyone make of the game too? the Side scrolling aspect looks great in my opinon :) the monster voices are odd but still work and the dialogue is AMAZING.

Doctor: Lightning and thunder! Very very...
*Unseen Silurian hissing*
River: Shhhh....Did you hear that?
Doctor: Yes, a hiss of sorts! Maybe your hair deflating in the rain?!
River: DOCTOR!
I think this is my new all time favorite Doctor/River moment!

The developers have certainly stayed true to the show and perhaps gone further with the dialogue. Theres certainly alot of great moments in the game and i'd actually like to see this 'Eternity Clock' plot as an actual episode of the show. I think the hissing is of a silent since the moment she says that is when the tally marks appear on the wall. I could be wrong.

Its possible but I think its Silurian. After all the Silents and Silurian are part of the following two levels.
What puzzled me about the game were some of the minigame design choices and the cliffhanger ending.
Quite frankly I think 20 euro are very expensive for the product we got....and to wait another 8 or 9 months to get the plot going (the pretty much just starts the moment the game ends) is just one hell of a disgrace!

The minigames in both the Eternity Clock and The Adventure games look annoying and repetative and looking at some walkthroughs i noticed the same puzzles but with a different design and thats just boring.
But the game looks quite good. Every game that is part of a series of games has to set up the story and you do learn quite a bit about the clock itself and what it does. At least theres a sequel coming. There was talk of a DLC coming out soon for the game. Not sure what it might be but it might be promising.

It is quite pretty for a downloadable game and the voice actors and music are spot on.
But the collectibles for example don't really woo me. I mean collecting hats with Matt Smith delivering a one liner about them?! And you can't even wear them?!
River's diary pages would've been really intersting if you could actually read them. I can't decipher anything on those pages as its too small and the game doesn't even give you a zoom function.
The whole thing feels a bit rushed. Which is hilarious considering the fact that the game got postponed for almost 2 months.
Chris666eden
05-31-2012, 08:26 PM
And considering they spent those 2 months tweaking and making changes to the game 2 of which would be enabling the use of wearing hats ingame & a zoom feature of Rivers diary seem like they never even came into there heads. The Music was GREAT. I'd love a clean version of the I Am The Doctor when you (Spoiler Alert) teleport the Supreme off the ship. Thats my favourite version of a FANTASTIC track.

The way I approach the games, since I'm utterly horrible at gaming, is I go to YouTube, combine all the hi-def .mp4s into a single video file (I do the same with recon_mission) with AnyDVDConverter (you can combine things without converting them) and then convert them with a better program (old DVDFab 7 works on YouTube downloads, Handbrake 0.9.3 doesn't, inexplicably). Thus, I get to watch the games like an animated movie. The person who does the gameplay rips is very good.

I did inform this site a while back - not that it made much difference. People making money out of my cretive efforts - when I do it for the love of it and never ask for a penny - does get my back up a bit, so I just try to ignore it.
As for 'The Astronauts' - there are 2 versions of this track: on the B-Side of the DW theme, they used a shortened version (losing a 2 minute intro sequence). It was re-released on the BBC RWS album 'A Retrospective' a few years back with the full intro.

Great to hear The Astronauts again! ... a wonderful piece of early 80s electronic music IMHO :)
It's a few years older than you'd think.
'The Case of the Ancient Astronauts' and 'Space For Man' were both BBC2 Horizon films from 1977 with music by Peter Howell. Both themes were combined, renamed 'The Astronauts' and appeared on the 1978 BBC albums 'Through a Glass Darkly' and 'BBC Space Themes'. This is also the version that later appears on Mark Ayres' 2008 compilation 'BBC Radiophonic Workshop A Retrospective'. The version of 'The Astronauts' which featured as the B side of the 80s DW theme single is a truncated (and IIRC a slightly remixed) version of the above, and to all intents and purposes is just the 'Space For Man' theme with a slow fade-up.
A poor-quality Americanised version of 'The Case of the Ancient Astronauts' is currently available on YouTube (

Dr Matt, can we expect some old osts from you? Dudley Simpson on my mind ;)
I've never posted any Dudley Simpson scores - none are available as iso-scores. There are a few tracks on the 'DW @ BBC RWS' CD series, and the Heathcliff Blair CD of synthesized re-orchestrated music suites from the Tom Baker era.
Penny Parker

I hope that there will be some re-releases of DVD's with earlier Doc's with iso scores. I have already a rip of Blair album and it's great.
I think maybe none of the tapes of Dudley Simpson music survive and that has pretty much put a stop to isolated scores and 5.1 remixes before they even started.
Recently I heard about how a new process has been used to separate out elements of the Psycho soundtrack to allow a new 5.1 mix to be created for the blu-ray. I don't know if its possible but if that process could someday be applied to old episodes of Doctor Who then maybe isolated scores and 5.1 mixes for stories before the 1980s synth music era could happen?

I'm wonder why... Another bad BBC strategy to make savings?
Poor ol' Beeb. As much as the destruction and loss of this stuff pains me, for the BBC and many other TV companies at the time all it did was take up space at best. At worst, it was a drain on finances and a serious safety hazard.
I've heard stories of film canisters piled up in the hallways, the stairs, next to fire exits. This stuff was highly flammable, and even if it didn't get ignited, it was going to be in people's way in an emergency.
There was never any reason for them to consider the idea that one day this stuff would be important, that one day they could make money from it. Reusing magnetic tape made sense. No-one was going to be interested in the stuff, and it was really expensive. Why would you keep old music recording for a show that was only meant to be seen once?
It's so easy for us to think less of them in hindsight, but no-one knew. Hell, the series could just have easily finished after its initial 13 week run. The fact the show made it through the first year is astounding. It nearly died or was killed several times over.
We Doctor Who fans are unbelievably fortunate. Our whole series exists in various forms. There are so many shows where nothing exists, not a single audio clip or frame of footage.
Sorry if it seems I'm ranting at you hybryd01, I honestly don't mean it that way. I just get a bit passionate, and I think that we fans occasionally are a little unfair to the Beeb. Without it, there wouldn't have been a show, after all. Certainly, it's totally unlike anything around at the time, and was a huge risk, and they took it.
Even if the BBC had housed all the stuff, that doesn't mean it would be around. In Australia we have a company called Crawford Productions, and they did something truly insane. They kept everything. Every bit of film, costumes, important props, the lot, from their many, many TV shows produced from 1954 onwards. And just as the DVD revolution was hitting its stride, meaning that releasing this stuff was going to be worthwhile having kept, a fire wiped out the warehouse. Some things were saved, some were lost forever.
They were THE only TV production company in Australia to care enough about their product to try and keep it all. And it still didn't save them.
I would dearly love for someone to find the old Simpson recordings, because I think the guy is a genius. He does better and more varied and interesting work with four people in a studio than Murray Gold does with a full orchestra. Don't get me wrong, I like Gold's work, but I think Simpson is the better composer by far.
I bought the Blair album when it was released, but of course it can't sound entirely right, because close as it is, it's not the original recording. That said, I'd be happy with a few more releases like it. If that's the best we can have, I'll cope.
And again, I apologise if it felt like I was having a shot at you, hybryd01. You just happened to hit one of my rambly-rant buttons. Once I start, you can't shut me up.
Cheers, Danny
Penny Parker

I think he recorded on tapes owned by BBC and making his own copy was impossible on that time.
Tristram Cary did Doctor Who music a long time before Dudley Simpson and he kept copies of his music. Copying audio tape wouldn't have been that difficult or expensive in the 1970s either, especially not for someone whose job it was to get music recorded to tape! Simpson just doesn't seem to have thought it worth the effort, sadly for us.

Right, I forgot about Tristram ;)
As did Geoffrey Burgon - although his recordings weren't of the same high quality that Tristram's were, who even kept the individual elements for 'The Mutants' enabling stereo placement and effects on the soundtrack release. And thanks to Tristram's foresight, we can enjoy(?) listening to each and every verse of 'The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon'...

Well, it's probably worth pointing out that there are a few bits of Dudley's DW music which are still with us - cues from 'The Underwater Menace', 'The Macra Terror', 'Fury from the Deep', 'The Mind of Evil' and 'The Claws of Axos' were released on Doctor Who at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop Volumes 1 and 2; and more recently, further cues surfaced on the DVD photo galleries of 'The Seeds of Death' Special Edition, 'Carnival of Monsters' Special Edition and 'Planet of the Spiders', but these are mostly lacking their later Radiophonic Workshop overdubs. Enticingly, Mark Ayres (the other Radiophonic archivist!) has hinted that there may be more to come...

I read the Radiophonic Workshop did leave a large archive when they folded so hopefully some cool stuff will emerge. If the sound separation process from the Psycho blu-ray can be applied to old Doctor Who stories then that could be amazing. TBH the process sounds like magic to me but computers can do some amazing things these days. Computers and -money- to be more accurate. That may be where Doctor Who hits a snag.

EXTRA INFO:
For the mixed soundtrack, cues are placed in strict story order, and where appropriate, mixed together to form longer, more coherent tracks. And where significantly different cues followed each other with no significant break between, I have added track divides.
Stereo ambiance has been applied to the mixed soundtrack.
Two repeated cues have been removed. One was a short section lifted from the cue previous to it, the other was a long sequence of standalone drum beat, top and tailed with some Dalek March. One of these had more drums beats in the middle than the other (and went on forever) so I retained the shorter version.
The Exxillon chant tracks on the isolated score were raw and untreated, and sounded very different to what was used in the final TV dub. I have added reverb to these tracks so they sound closer to what was heard on TV. I have left them (and every cue) untouched on the unmixed CD if you want to hear the difference (the very clear main vocals on some of the chants did make me chuckle!)
3 sound effects are included at the end: 'Dalek Ship Opening' (originally in the main score before the first Dalek 'March' - you can hear it in context in the introductory excerpt 'Dalek Arrival'), the 'Pulsing Beacon of the Exxillon City' (included - with a lot of sound faults - now fixed - at the end of the deleted scenes on the DVD), and the 'Control Room in the Exxillon City' - sampled from the recent CD re-release of 'Doctor Who Sound Effects'.
Also included are the Carey Blyton 'Dalek' and 'Vogan' music suites from the CD "Doctor Who meets Sherlock Holmes". Both sets of 3 tracks come with an introductory excerpt here. As the DVD has no isolated score, I have included the music from 'Revenge of the Cybermen' (the 'Vogan' suite) on this album, as I will be re-doing 'Doctor Who and the Silurians' very soon (which originally had all 3 music suites from Carey Blyton). I felt the music from 'Revenge' was more at home on this album (Daleks & Cybermen).
Full CD art will follow.

Cheers guys - tis a good one this, but unfortunately some gremlins crept into the final mix (reverb on the chants was all wrong, as was the mixing on track 5, and I found a better picture for the albumart). I've also fixed a track from 'The Happiness Patrol' (track 4 - which had an unnecessary fragment of music at the beginning used from a later cue). Added to that, I discovered the new font I've used for the track listing on the CD backs of McCoy stories is too feint when printed.

I note that you have included suites from Dr Who Meets Sherlock Holmes. There was another Blyton album with tracks from this story, the name of which escapes me (I have the album somewhere). Was there any difference between the music on that and the DVD iso score?

I did an album from the iso-score of 'Doctor Who and the Silurians' and included all the 'suites' from 'Doctor Who meets Sherlock Holmes' on that album as it was the oly Blyton iso-score at the time. I need to redo that one anyway - and it will include the Silurian suite. The suites are 'based on' the soundtracks - with some very different orchestrations and alternative versions of cues contained within.
I've finally done the CD art for 'Death to the Daleks' and - please forgive me - have made a couple of improvements to the album. So there are 2 versions of the CD art pack - MP3 & FLAC (they contain the artwork - including another new cover - and the 3 tracks that have been improved).

No, they're not, and there is more Who music on it. I do have this album, but haven't managed to find it yet. As soon as I do, I'll upload it.
In the meantime, I came across The Fantasy Album in my searches. It has an interesting cover of the Doctor Who theme on it, but it's such a pleasant album I thought others might enjoy the whole lot. There is a bit more about it at The Millennium Effect site, but I would dispute their assertion that "The BBC Records Fantasy Album was never legitimately released, available only in promotional form (copies sent to magazines for review, for example) before cancellation. Copyright dispute - apparently over the Alien theme tune - led to a complete withdrawal of the LP and cassette, though it appears that the same recordings were issued later that year on the Mobile Fidelity label." This was not the case, at least, not initially. I bought mine at HMV in Oxford Street, London in 1984 where both the vinyl and cassette were freely available - BBC issues, not Mobile Fidelity. (I wish I'd bought the vinyl now, and did consider it at the time, but plumped for the tape as my cassette deck was far superior to my record player). The vinyl had the black cover, a copy of which I've included; the cassette had (and still has!) the usual BBC Cassettes trimmings and the yellow variant of the cover.
Enjoy!! (

DrMatt, there is something wrong with your story numbering, because Silver Nemesis should be 150th ;)
Depends how you count. If you don't number Shada, and count Trial of a Timelord as one story, then Silver Nemesis becomes story 150. If you do count Shada, and the stories in Trial as separate stories (with Vervoids and Foe counting as one story), then (I think) the numbering works out as DrMatt has listed it. There is nothing 'wrong' with it. It's just personal preference. Strictly speaking we could use production codes and do away with numbering altogether.

Ah - the good old DW story numbering debate. As Recons said - it is all down to personal preference. I started numbering DW stories before we had Wikipedia to call on, and I distinctly remember when 'Dragonfire' was first broadcast that both the Radio Times and BBC announcer stated it was the '150th Doctor Who Story' - so I have always based my story numbering around that. In this numbering system, 'Shada' counts and 'Trial of a Time Lord' counts as 3 stories. But feel free to renumber your stories as you see fit. It's all a matter of personal preference.
Strictly speaking we could use production codes and do away with numbering altogether.Recons
That's when things really get tricky - given how many classic who stories were filmed out of order (Season 19 is a good example - 'Castrovalva' being the 4th story Peter Davison recorded.)

And Carey Blyton.

Someone may appreciate this little addendum of tracks that were heard in episodes, but weren't stock (though I threw in a few that aren't on any DW-labeled album) or soundtrack music (even somewhat unusual stuff like the Terpsichore and Lama Chhopa tracks). There is a Jossverse unofficial soundtrack torrent that collects these same sorts of add-on tracks, even ones that are one-liner references. Note that I can't figure out which Schubert movement was used, so I included both.

The Millennium Effect site has a lot of useful information on it, but be warned that occasional errors have crept in. It's thrown me off the scent a few times looking for library music.
In terms of searching for 'missing' library music, it is a bit of a hobby of mine. I have uploaded some examples in the past - such as the buddhist chanting music used in The Abominable Snowmen that you refer to, or the background music in the theatre in Planet of the Spiders - on this very site. However, a lot of it is incredibly hard to track down. (I am also hunting for some of the tracks to the Quatermass serials). A key missing album is Eric Siday's The Ultra-Sonic Perception. I have been searching for this for years. As rare as it seems to be, if it ever comes to light, the cost is likely to be prohibitive (at least to me!). An altrenative might be to know if the tracks were used in any other productions, but there does not seem to be this kind of cross-referencing available on the internet. It would be grand if there were interest from the Beeb or a third party in officially licensing these and getting them released, but thier niche appeal makes this unlikely.
If you are new to the library music used in early Who, I can recommend Space Adventures. There should be a link to it on this site.

Where is the Buddhist chant of which you speak, here? I,too,am a fan of library music in Dr. Who and I've found a couple of things online. I actually found Eric Siday's "Moonscape" from "The Moonbase." But in general, nothing terrific.
I did hear about this one guy who was planning a "Space Adventures 2" but the cost was prohibitive.

Here are Tristram Cary's two early Dalek Scores, for The Daleks and The Daleks' Master Plan. The music on both albums has been sourced from the Devils' Planets CD, and the sound effects come from Doctor Who at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop: Volume 1 (and The Daleks DVD gallery). On the Devils' Planets CD, The Daleks' Master Plan was split over the two discs. Updated CD art for both albums.

I used a few other sites, too. I just didn't have them all bookmarked. There was another site that corrected a bunch of which song first appeared where stuff, so Millennium Effect was not my only source. The bagpipe music from The Highlanders, The Mind Robber and The War Games is an example of something I wouldn't even know where to start looking (and I have little hope of finding it). As I'm also a cheap sod and poor, I try to find what I can from what is easily available. But finding things like Deben Bhattacharya's Himalayas album (Lama Chhopa), The Great British Experience album, Savoy tracks off of YouTube (only a couple where I had to substitute another similar band as a placeholder track) and all that Ulsamer Collegium music (a lot of these sites leave out "Istampita chominciamento di gioia", but identify the other two), I thought those were pretty hard finds on the Web (actually, it was harder to find composition dates on those Medieval and Renaissance tracks--LOL).
Well, did I find anything that people didn't have and help anyone?
Daddy Wouldn't Buy Me A Bow-Wow (Sarah Jane whistles it), The Entertainer (Fendahl hiker victim whistles it) and Age of Aquarius (Jo quotes a section of the lyrics) were ones I got from either the DVD or just knowing the songs, for example. I didn't see those on any of those sites, but they are references rather than those tracks actually being played. Those are also the sorts of things I've been trying to plunk in far beyond what was played as incidental music.
On the Logopolis Schubert track: is it I. Allegro moderato or II. Andante con moto?
Momaru: Can you share Eric Siday's Moonscape or tell where you found it?
Momaru

Yes, lots of nice things that I didn't have! I'm really more interested in the incidental music, you know, music that the characters _can't_ hear. Rather than calling this "addendum" you might call it "Doctor Who Source Music" since most of it is.
NileQT1987

Episode 2 is the location of Moonbase, apparently. Looking for it still.
Well, it's an addendum in the sense that it's an addendum extra to all of DrMatt's work and the official album releases, which includes the majority of the incidentals. This is the stuff that will probably not be released as DW-related, but still takes a long time to compile. That's why I brought up the example of the Buffy/Angel soundtrack collection, which I greatly added to with these sorts of tracks as well.
How are those SJA tracks coming?
What amuses me is that "La donna mobile" has managed to appear in The Tenth Planet, Inferno and The Lodger so far. Is that a record for the song most sung by random characters (the latter two being the Doctor)? LOL.

Just to be clear on this the information for all library music in Doctor Who is available on the 'Programmes As Broadcast' documents that are all still available on the BBC's Classic Series webpage as pdf files. They are located in the episode guide for every story in the 'Original Paperwork' link. They really are a brilliant resource.

It's used on Parts Three, Four and Six of The Invasion of Time, as well as on Part Six of The Armageddon Factor. It's track 12 on 'Doctor Who at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop Volume 2' (see DrMatt's post earlier on this page).

Ian Mansfield? I was looking for credits of this guy and it seams that he only wrote one story.
Do you know which Mansfield arranged this? Anyone? :)

Just to let you know, most of the Black Orchid period music was originally sourced from records made by The Savoy Orpheans and The Savoy Havana Band in the '20s. Most of the tracks turned up on YouTube sometime ago and I included those in my little addendum that I provided a while back (note that a few are placeholder tracks with other same-era bands until the rest of the Savoy tracks turn up).
The medley provided on the soundtrack release is just a mash-up medley of these real-world antique records played during the serial.
Ah, that BBC site paperwork idea solved my Schubert problem. It's listed as them using side 1 of the record, which means it is almost certainly the first movement of his 8th symphony, then.

Those links would be all fine and dandy if it weren't for the fact that Megaupload is deader than a doorknob, sadly. So in a lot of cases, these new links are just replacing those. Also, the more versions that are put up, the longer before they're all dead.

Wow! What a find - these are indeed original recordings from 'Revenge of the Cybermen' - all we're ever likely to hear. The cues from the other stories are the same as those used on the DVD iso-scores.
Any chance of the Revenge tracks in FLAC? And would you have any objections to me adding them to the 'Daeth to the Daleks' CD?
:)
EDIT: I've just noticed that for 'Revenge' we have 5 tracks titles for 6 tracks. I'm having listen to try figure out which is which and which needs a titles. Anyone else have any ideas? And listening to the tracks to the other stories - they are much better quality than those used on the iso-scores.

DrMatt1974 - I have a question, as I figure you're likely to know... You know on that last release of DW Sound Effects, there were several Hodgson tracks that didn't have origin stories (first appearances is how I'm trying to organize everything that was used numerous times).
Now, I figure that the sonic screwdriver is certainly Pertwee's (Troughton's had a different sound), so I identified the first story of Pertwee's sonic (Inferno), but TARDIS Doors, TARDIS Interior (in Flight), TARDIS Interior (Stationary) and TARDIS Observation Screen Operates are something I don't where to place for their first appearances in the sound design. Do you know?

Hey, has anyone heard of any rumours of recording sessions for New Who? Would be amazing if they got leaked, how likely is that with the BBC actually?
NileQT1987
07-07-2012, 04:46 AM
Retconaddict2: A soundtrack is likely to be released after the 2012-2013 series has aired (perhaps late 2013 after the anniversary--or perhaps with essentially the two-disc set format they've been doing as of late, Murray's music might be split with the 2011 Xmas/2012 Amy/Rory episodes and then the 2012 Xmas/2013 Clara episodes).
If somebody did have these tracks, they'd get into an awful lot of trouble if they gave them out publicly or announced that they had them on an easily viewable forum thread!

^ I think you're confused...Retroaddict2 is asking if there are any known recording sessions of Murray's scores for New Who, not if we're getting a new scores next year for series seven.
I have seen and heard supposed "unreleased" music tracks on youtube before, but I haven't seen or heard anything about their being recording sessions. That would be awesome.

My feeling is that the only bona fide Hodgson track is the Dalek Control Room (as heard in Insert Name of Dalek Story), and I think the TARDIS noises are all Season 14 vintage (certainly the TARDIS in flight sounds quite different in its fleeting Season 13 appearances). Furthermore I'd lay a small wager that the sonic screwdriver is late Jon or early Tom. It's almost definitely post-Brian Hodgson. If I can pinpoint its earliest appearance I'll let you know.

Thanks for the nice comments about the Blyton album. I'm not much a fan of his Who work in the context of the programme, but on their own, they're ok. His other work is much better IMHO. Science Fiction is not his fort. His Holmes stuff for the abandoned series is quite an interesting listen.
Converting to FLAC now. Our broadband is terrible out here in the countryside (I get 60kps) so it'll be a while until it fully uploads. I'll see if I can borrow Mrs Recons' work satellite connection tomorrow.

No, no objections at all to their addition to the DttD CD - I'm honoured, in fact, to have contributed to one of your excellent releases, mate.
Revenge: The titles are:
23 Deep Space
24 Cybermen!
25 Vogans (both 'hawk' and 'dove')
26 Cybermen and Vogans - their music in combination
27 Cybermen and Vogans fight in the underground caves: the Cybermen triumph
28 "All's well that ends well!" (not used in the final dub - but see the "Vogan Suite")
The titles and notes are all Blyton's. I suggest we shorten 27 to 'Fight in the underground caves' to avoid confusion. The "Vogan Suite" referred to does not appear on this CD.

Earliest appearances of the above Doctor Who Sound Effects tracks, after plenty of DVD checking:
Sonic screwdriver - The Sontaran Experiment (production) / The Ark in Space (broadcast)
TARDIS door opens - The Invasion of Time
TARDIS interior (in flight) - The Hand of Fear
TARDIS interior (stationary) - The Masque of Mandragora
TARDIS observation screen operates - The Masque of Mandragora

Ah, clef3, I have been asking for this since this thread began. I've tried contacting Reeltime - a very difficult thing to do these days - without a glimmer of a response. The normal Who shops in the UK that I've tried don't have a copy. It seems this was a low run product (naturally enough) which sold out. I've had a running search on Ebay for this for many years.
If anyone does have a copy of this, please upload, and you'll make at least two of us very happy!

Dan Dare Radio Luxembourg serial
The New Adventures of Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future aired five times a week on Radio Luxembourg for five years from July 2, 1951. Dan's voice was Noel Johnson, who also played Dick Barton on BBC radio. Each episode started with the command "Spaceships Away!". The 15-minute show was sponsored by Horlicks and on March 3, 1952, the 106th episode of Dan Dare was heard that Monday night with different episodes on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 7:15pm. Although the dramatisation was recorded on wax discs for broadcast, the original discs were lost or destroyed. Until recently no copies had ever been recovered but in late 2011 two episodes were found as part of the Lost Shows Appeal, orchestrated by missing episode hunter Charles Norton. The recovered shows were "Under Sentence of Death" (episode 76), aired 21/01/1952, and The Lost World On Mars (episode 53), aired 19/03/1953.
Although these two recovered episodes may not be shared (for very complicated reasons), a further episode has surfaced and is available here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?n7zwvz2o0huagrw
This episode suffers from a number of serious sound faults and defects. Unfortunately, Dan Dare fans are - by and large - an ageing bunch (I include myself in this) and so far the skill required has been beyond us, other than to apply blanket hiss filters and equalise, which offers some improvement, but deadens the sound so one cannot totally understand the performances.
If anyone has any ability to make this recording sound nearer to the way it did when it was broadcast, it would be very much appreciated.

I've finally sorted the updated version of 'Death to the Daleks' with the additional tracks from 'Revenge of the Cybermen'. A big thanks to recons for digging up those little gems.
After finding some nice CG renders of 'Death' Daleks, I have included some alternative CD art, and have changed the design of the disc (wasn't happy with the previous version).

Has anyone found better rip of "Music From Excelis Audio Adventures"?
I search everywhere, but there's only a version with glitches on several tracks.
I've had 3 different original copies of this - all had the same glitches (as far as I remember only on one track - the introductory excerpt compilation) - annoying clicks on the track. I didn't know there were any elsewhere. But it seems this is how every disc was pressed, and it's never been re-pressed.
Mary Tamm - very sad and unexpected. Yet another who legend passes - no more please.

I may be a bit slow on the uptake here, but I recently heard a song on the radio - it's by Al Wilson and is called "The Snake" from 1968. It's actually a cover of the song originally by Oscar Brown Jr. (and more recently covered by Dodgy) but the Al Wilson version sounded remarkably familiar to me. So I've just played "Love Don't Roam" - the song used on The Runaway Bride. They're the same song! Did Murray Gold ever credit the original composer?

They're very similar, but obviously there were significant enough differences to avoid the inevitable plagiarism lawsuits. There's even a lyrical similarity, which makes me think the latter's intended to be a deliberate homage to the former.

It is clearly the same song, end of. From a musical perspective, it's structurally identical and almost melodically identical. Well done, Murray.
The only reason there's no lawsuit is because a) blind luck, and b) the song is relatively obscure and 45 years old.

Well, don't feel sorry for Johnny Rivers, who produced it... He's got quite an infamous reputation for having done a pretty rotten bit of stealing from Elvis Presley.
The Controversy Over the ?Memphis? Recordings by Elvis Presley and Johnny Rivers (
http://www.elvis-history-blog.com/elvis-johnny-rivers.html)
And apparently, The Snake song predates Al Wilson (he didn't write it). The Liverpool Five did it earlier (the orchestration is different--very British '60s) and a guy named Oscar Brown, Jr. was the original jazz version (equally very different).
As far as the song... Well, it's happened a few times with little ill effect on the latter artists' reputations. For example, the Beach Boys used the tune of Sweet Little Sixteen for Surfin' U.S.A. But my impression is definitely one of homage due to the lyrics being played on quite on purpose. Probably should have credited the inspiration for the song, though. It's also close, but not quite identical musically. The arrangement is definitely changed. Also, a lot of songs of this genre tend to sound rather similar, though obviously The Snake is very much the inspiration. And people did notice on the web back in 2007, F.Y.I.
Interestingly, there were quite a bit of problems amongst blues artists early on, where the record companies were suing people like Sam Phillips (who recorded them) for "callback" songs--IE. the female sings about her no-good man, and the male answers back with the same tune, but telling his side of it. This side of traditional blues tradition, itself, wasn't really compatible with copyright laws and the big companies wielding them.
The lyrics certainly feel like an homage--and you can even read it as the original having the male being a poisonous figure for the female, whereas in Murray's, he's the sympathetic one and the girl is written as the seductress who is "reel[ing him] in". And there is some duality to the Doctor regarding him having relationships (ultimately will always end badly) that this adds a layer to.

Thanks to all the fabulous people taking their time uploading (or making music collections) to help others fill the gaps in their collections, asking for nothing in return - it is great to see in a time when so many people are trying to exploit others to make money even if those exploited people don't have much money to start with. I am referring to the people who live in mansions complaining that people living in small apartments (because that's all they can afford) are "stealing" from them by downloading their music/dvds/movies. Fairness in life - nil.
Anyhow, I was hoping some kind people could help fill a couple of gaps in my incidental music "wish-list" - I have some, but am looking to replace with 320/flac:
Doctor Who - Space Adventures 1963-1971
30 Years at the Radiophonic Workshop
Classic Music from the Tom Baker Era
Doctor Who the TV movie (not the CD, the expanded version by Dr Matt(?))
Doctor Who Music From The Tenth Planet CD
Doctor Who Music From The Tomb of the Cybermen CD
Doctor Who - The Sea Devils (not the CD, the full version by Dr Matt)
Doctor Who - The Mutants (Third Doctor)
Also I absolutely loved the DW Addendums posted by NileQT1987, such a great collection and thanks for doing it. One problem - I couldn't download number 7 as the link is faulty, could you please repost it?
Thanks in advance guys!

Oh, no. I have absolutely no clue what was in #7, so that's not going to help figure out what you need. Could you maybe try the link again?
If it is still faulty, I'll redo the whole upload (I forgot about the Ghostbusters theme lines in 28x12, so that's another one for the collection). There are a few items that I still can't get (Backing Track is one of them, as it seems to be nowhere except for hoping that some YouTuber will put up their vinyl b-side someday--the Shada punting music also seems elusive). I've also since found the SJA music.
If you remember any random little lines of/hummings or whistlings of/references to songs in various episodes, do tell! As said, this was inspired by the Jossverse soundtrack project, where it goes a whole lot further than just what was fully played in the episode.

And remember, not only did previous seasons not get double albums for everything, Searies 1 & 2 shared one disc....

Right, I don't know why I thought there was an album per XMas ep., maybe because of these 'suites' in the seasons albums.
And now that I think of it, also because of the "Specials" album, I certainly didn't expect this one, it was released just one month before the series 5 album, and wayyy after (nearly 2 years) the airing of the first one of the batch, 'The Next Doctor'.
So, maybe in the next double cd album, there will be room for 'Widow', maybe in another compilation of "non regular" episodes... Time (ahah) will tell.

Some of them (besides the one posted in this thread) are still up on both Sam and Dan Watt's sites. If you have Adblock Plus, you can see the entirety of a webpage's media files when you push play and you'll be able to separate out the .mp3 and download the embedded file. That's how I did it, anyway.
Or... you can just download this little collection with everything provided and that which I found (I tried to figure out the episodes each track comes from, but some may be wrong):

Sorry for not being around to reply to posts and requests - I've been a bit poorly, which has severely limited my time at the PC.
A week or so ago I did try re-uploading some requests to Peeje, tried and tried again, but much as the uploads completed and gave me links, the links were then non-existent and files unavailable. With that and Demonoid going down, I've been a bit at a loss as how to how keep the soundtracks alive and available online.
Thankfully, a user on TheBox (plumboy) has been given permission to upload my soundtracks (those I've complied from DVD isolated scores and various out-of-print CDs). So if you are member there, it's worth checking from time to time. He is currently uploading in order of his own personally preference, but I'm sure he'd be open to requests. So far, he's uploaded: 'The Seeds of Doom', 'State of Decay', 'Earthshock' and 'The Five Doctors'. If anyone would like an invite to TheBox, please PM me - I have a good few going spare.
As for other means of sharing, does anyone have any good suggestions for a free, reliable file-hosting site?
I'm tempted to start using Open Bittorent to share from now on - a tracker free torrent service that doesn't involve signing up to any torrent sites.
Either way (or both) I'll try and get on top of requests over this next week.
COMING VERY SOON: 'Vengeance on Varos' Special Edition Soundtrack
Just starting work on this one - which has an amazingly well mixed 5.1 score. All of the individual music element tracks for the music score must survive, because the music on the 5.1 mix is quite something - some of the best 5.1 mixed music I've ever heard on a DVD! And with the music available as a 5.1 isolated score, the soundtrack CD will be in wonderful true stereo! (But there will also be the original unmixed mono for the purists). Hope to have this one done by the weekend.
