So I assumed. Hmmmph. I think I need to learn how to do my own rips.

Wil Wheaton: Just A Geek
Audiobook/Biography/Acting | 2009 | ISBN: 059600768X | English | MP3@96kbps | 09:04:29 | 373 MB
Wil Wheaton has never been one to take the conventional path to success. Despite early stardom through his childhood role in the motion picture "Stand By Me", and growing up on television as Wesley Crusher on "Star Trek: The Next Generation", Wil left Hollywood in pursuit of happiness, purpose, and a viable means of paying the bills. In the oddest of places, Topeka, Kansas, Wil discovered that despite his claims to fame, he was at heart Just a Geek. In this, his newest book, Wil shares his deeply personal and difficult journey to find himself. You'll understand the rigors, and joys, of Wil's rediscovering of himself, as he comes to terms with what it means to be famous, or, ironically, famous for once having been famous. Writing with honesty and disarming humanity, Wil touches on the frustrations associated with his acting career, his inability to distance himself from Ensign Crusher in the public's eyes, the launch of his incredibly successful web site, wilwheaton.net, and the joy he's found in writing. Through all of this, Wil shares the ups and downs he encountered along the journey, along with the support and love he discovered from his friends and family.

This is mildly apropos of nothing, but seeing that post of "Tea At Five" made me think of it. I saw Mulgrew on a panel at Dragon*Con a few years ago, and she was one of the most engaging people I've ever heard speak at a con. I'd never had much interest in Voyager until then, but I got it all from Netflix shortly thereafter and quit enjoyed it.
My point being, if you ever have a chance to go see Mulgrew live, you should definitely do it.

Solar Sailors (1977)
The Dehorn Crew
The first generation of Trekkies didn't have all the merchandise available to the later fans (not even the episodes themselves) -- just a few books, comics and model kits. Instead they created their own do-it-yourself tie-ins. One early contribution was Star Trek "filksongs" (originally a typo of "folksongs" but the name stuck) -- Trek-themed folk and parody songs performed by fans at conventions and fanclub get-togethers. One legengary filksinger is sci-fi/fantasy fan and activist Leslie Fish who lead The Dehorn Crew. She appears in Trekkies 2 but I always felt she deserved a cameo in at least an episode or movie. Given her passion for Unions she would've been a perfect extra on the Voyager two-parter "Workforce". A real missed opportunity.
Know your roots, people! Ripped from vinyl, includes album art and label scans plus a real rarity for a vinyl LP -- a 16-page liner notes booklet.

FYI the download "Yesterdays Enterprise recording sessions" cues are not identified. The last cue, which is 17 minutes, is actually a recording session for "All good things." It is comprised of all the music from the cd (except the main theme) plus a 2 minute cue; the 2 minutes is the only real extra. I believe there is a similar "All good things" 17 minute track in one of the other downloads, but it is correctly named.
Many many thanks to Altovar who figured out the "Yesterdays Enterprise" cue was from a different episode.

Kate Mulgrew in Dallas S02E11 "Triangle"
Star Trek Voyager is my least favorite show, to say it mildly, to many missed opportunities storywise.
Still it's nice to see the stars in a different show. I like Mulgrews acting in belows Dallas Episode much better than what she gave us in Voyager. The emotions of the character she has to play here are much more convincing. Also note Mulgrew seems to haven't aged really that much since Dallas' 1970s and Voyagers late 90's :)

Thanks, but reading the thread you're pointing me to it appears the sound hasn't been left untouched (that's why I bumped here). I know a bunch of people who like to remaster anything rare or old and if someone says the lossless sounds "muddy" compared to the lossy one, I'm tempted to believe him... Why ... Cause I'm around music since long enough to know that if one among many spots something with his ears, those who don't notice nothing are generaly the ones who get it wrong ! ;-)
I'll keep an eye on this, and as it's for someone who don't get a lot of rare stuff of this kind, I'll keep watching for the real gem.

Well, like i mentioned via PM, I can get you TMP 20th anniversary as lossless. It does contain the majority of the score. No alts and such, but I have seen very few of the alternate material as true lossles. Add the alts of the posted lossless album, to the 20th anniversary disc, there it is. Only the one posted by William has the complete score, though. Too bad he is on haiatus, as it would be interesting to see if he could provide a lossless version.....

There are a bunch of promos from enterprise that I have seen on the net. and there was a alt theme from that as well, one before the vocal theme came along. I have it somewhere, I will find it and post it here.

I've got to upload that Star Trek 6 expanded score for all you good people.
Oh, please do, William!! Does the version you have include this?
There's a cue called The Search and it's about 50 seconds long. Why it's missing confounds me. I hope WilliamTaylor has this, because I would love to hear it. There's two other cues that didn't make the sessions version either - how about the demo version of the main title that Eidelman created to land the job; and the cue that he created specifically for the theatrical trailer? Especially that second one, I like it a lot. I wonder if WilliamTaylor has clean rips of these at all as well.
Looking forward to the version you have!!

Star Trek Main Title b/w Dig It [Japanese Single] (1980)
Frank Serafine
1. Star Trek / Main Title
2. Dig It
Paramount really targeted Japan for those all-important overseas box office reciepts when releasing Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Sadly, Japan has not been very receptive to Trek over the years -- certainly not like Germany has. Here's another very rare Japanese ST:TMP recording, this time by Frank Serafine who created sound effects for that film as well as for Search For Spock later. This one is a late disco version of Goldsmith's main title -- you can almost see the Solid Gold Dancers gettin' down to this!
Ripped from vinyl, includes album art and label scans.

No, apparently I have the same copy that you have. I went to listen to "The Search", and you can hear people talking, and prop sound effects!!! :(
I'm totally sorry, thought that I had gotten this from a studio source, but apparently not! There are several other tracks that are not clean either, so I may just delete this file as being fan made, not original.

Sounds like you're talking about the Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology by Stan & Fred Goldstein illustrated by Rick Sternbach that came out in 1980. And yes, it is rare and yes, it is very interesting! I have a copy as well which I've been debating (with myself as usual) whether or not to spend all the hours scanning so I can share it. It's so essential! Especially if you enjoyed the last couple seasons of Enterprise or those wonderful Trek novels "The Final Reflection" and "Federation" -- gives some great background on the earliest days of Starfleet that very easily could've been referenced in those NX-01 episodes. Especially all the cool ships Sternbach designed filling in the gaps between 1980 and the 23rd century of ST:TMP -- and take note that he did this some seven years prior to being hired on Next Generation! It is truly a forgotten gem of a book. I personally love all the manuals and encyclopedias and have spent a ridiculous number of hours poring over these things!
I'll upload the other stuff I've got. Some is pdf and some is in cbr so you'll need Comic Book Reader (which I recommend) or ComicRack (for the advanced collector) for viewing -- both are available as freeware, just google 'em.
---------- Post added at 04:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:14 PM ----------
This brings up an interesting issue: what's FFS's policy (if there is one) on sharing eBooks or eMagazines or eComics etc? I'll admit right now -- I'm too lazy to check the forum rules and read through all the comments to find out (but cut me some slack, I share a lot of rare stuff here!). My guess is as long as they're willing to turn a blind eye we're okay?
Anyway, what I was getting at is although virtually every comic book that has ever been published (that's from roughly 1935 to present) has been scanned and shared by folks like you and me for several years now, BUT! There is a surprising lack of Star Trek magazines or the so-called non-fiction Trek manuals available out there in internet sharityland! What's up with that?! Didn't Star Trek fans pretty much build the freaking internet?! Even Homer Simpson said "The internet was invented to find out what some nerd thinks about Star Trek!" I mean really -- seventy-five years worth of comic books have been scanned and shared online and yet no one has scanned the entire runs of the Star Trek Fan Club Communicator or Star Trek: The Magazine from the late 90s or the awesome Fact Files published in the UK?! People, we got work to do! I have a few -- a few! -- digitized issues of Starlog with Trek articles I've found on the web over the years but nothing like a complete run. The complete run of Trek comics (by all publishers) is available, of course, but so many great magazines, manuals and articles have yet to surface. TV Guide! I'd love to have a collection of every TV Guide Trek article or even the special edition magazines the printed over they years! For the record, I sold a huge percentage of my magazine and comic collection 15 years ago to finance a cross-country move so I am missing a ton of stuff I once parted with and would love to recover digitally.
---------- Post added at 04:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:51 PM ----------
So I'm throwing this out there: If anyone has a scanner and Trek magazines, manuals, articles, what-have-you, please consider scanning and sharing with the rest of us on the web! If you know of a resource -- a forum or blog, etc -- that I'm obviously unaware of because these things are already out there and I've just missed them, please clue me in!

Yes, it was really great! I took the Spaceflight Chronology on one of my visits to Paramount studios, I had it wrapped in a brown paper bag, like porno, and wanted to get Rick Sternbach to sign it for me. He looked at it, and said, "WOW, what ratty condition" (being as it was very old and had shelf wear on it). He refused to sign it, as they were getting bucks for autographs at conventions (Damn that "Creation conventions") and old "Nancy boy" Mike Okuda came over and told me how inappropriate it was to bring that book into the studios, and that I should be reported (Indeed, it was mentioned to me later) and his girlfriend (later his wife Denise) added her voice to the debate, and told Mike to call security, that I was some sort of "Trekkie" that snuck into the studio. I left and went over to the music dept to pick up something, (that was why I was there) but I thought "what a bunch of jackasses they were". As long as you are paying Rick, or Mike for their opinion, they will be VERY nice and friendly to fans, but if you happen to catch them in private, then they are as nasty as can be. This is only one story of mine, there are MANY more, and I have heard from other people, and fans alike, about how nasty things can get, especially Mike Okuda! I always had a great relationship with Andy Probert. He was kind of like me, liked to talk about TREK, and was a self admitted "Trek geek", but NOT a "Trekkie" or "Trekker". Didn't know or care about any of the cast, per se, but liked the technical side of Trek and all the crew of the ship. Figures that the rest of the bunch would get Andy kicked off of the show after the first season, for being "Too difficult to work with". What a bunch of jerks!

Wow that's a surprising bit of insight! It's always disappointing when these sorts of encounters occur, especially if its coming from someone you really admire. I was at a comic convention once a few years ago and saw Sheldon Moldoff who created the DC Comics character Hawkman back in 1940. He was sitting at a table with his wife and a sign reading "Sheldon Moldoff, Creator of Hawkman" and absolutely no one was paying him any attention -- everyone was more interested in the flavor of the month superstar comic artists in attendance. I went to this con specifically because Moldoff was there and I approached him and told him how much I've enjoyed collecting comics from the 'Golden Age' of the 1940s and his Hawkman comics in particular as he's always been my favorite character. He just stared at me as if he'd rather be left alone. I asked for his autograph on a hardback collection of his Hawkman stories and he acted really put off by this. Didn't say anything, just signed it and handed it back looking away from me. I thanked him and smiled and walked away leaving him at his empty and ignored table. It was a real disappointment. Why did he even bother to attend? I was hoping he'd appreciate the attention and maybe even tell an anecdote or two as other veteran artists have done so with me many times over the years. Oh well, at least he signed it...

I have a VERY unusual query...I'm a big time Doctor Who fan, (don't worry, it IS a Trek-related query) to the point where I have found a torrent that allowed me to download the audio from all the original series episodes (including the missing eps, etc etc).
I was wondering if anyone had ever done the same thing for Star Trek??? Provided the audio from episodes (sfx, music and speech) so that one could say...listen to a story when watching the video was either not possible or not convenient?

Izbot, you are truly a wonder on this thread (no doubt others too, but...). I suppose it does make more sense to download them and convert them myself...that way I can pick and choose which ones are done and not have to worry about downloading stories I'm unlikely to want to hear (mainly from TOS with probably one or two from each of the others).
Was just lazy and hoped someone had done the work lol.

Babydoll, just let us know what stuff you are missing, and we'll try to replace them. I had over half of my soundtracks stolen/destroyed (Had a fire), and thanks to the people here, I am back up to over 1500 scores! Want to do whatever I can to help others.
William
I downloaded from the Audio Collection torrent, which included a Star Trek VI "Complete Bootleg Soundtrack". The track called "the Search" did have minor effects of simple thuds or clangs which actually kind of makes sense...the sound of a search taking place.

Thank You izbot I got about 40 pages scanned!! You are the best.
On a side note I got to meet the author twice back in 1974 and again in 1975 and to see his diagrams (more like blue prints) in his home in San Diego. I met him through his daughter Karen, he was a Professor at San Diego State University and was one the most gentile, kindhearted man I had met. Of course his full name is Franz Joseph Schnaubelt and was a brilliant man and loved Star Trek. As young as I was at the time (17) I was mesmerized by his drawings and imagination, I believe he was a Professor of Engineering and it showed. I was so amazed at his work I fall over myself trying to get a closer look and his work, that I almost pulled one his his drawing boards over! I felt like a idiot...but Franz just smiled and told me it was okay, no harm done. About a year later the manual came out and I again visited him at his home and he was gracious enough to sign both the manual and blueprints... both of these have a very special place in my home and heart!! Franz gave such a boost to young minds, even Gene Roddenberry (at that time anyway) thought the Star Trek franchise was dead, but Franz drawings sure changed that.
Again Thanks Izbot

I'm very much in agreement with BD, the soundtrack for ST:TMP is certainly the best part of the movie and stands out as probably the most layered, thoughtful and enjoyable of the Trek soundracks -- even if you didn't care so much for the film. One of Goldsmith's best works and that's saying something! A very rewarding listen.

It's fun that someone wants to listen to the episodes without the video. When I was a kid, before VCR's, I would record the show while holding a mic in front of the speaker. I had to be quite the whole hour or it would be on the tape. I still have a tape or two somewhere. Bob Justman, a producer on Trek, would joke that Star Trek had a budget large enough to do a really, really good radio show! I guess he was right. I still listen to the show when I drive cross country.

Yeah, I have a friend on Long Beach PD that does that. He used to have a small cassette recorder, that he would record whole shows, and he used to carry a big bag of batteries. Now he has a portable DVD player that he plugs into the cigarette lighter, and keeps running the car battery down, hehehehehehe

The TOS BluRays don't have an isolated soundtrack audio option. However, the packaging mentions a 7.1 sound mix, so perhaps dialogue and effects are more discretely located in specific channels (at least more so than in the 5.1 mix). It makes me woner if a cleaner Blu rip might be possible. If I had a BluRay drive in my computer I'd give it a try myself.
If you opt to try a DVD rip, I would be VERY interested in your results, William. :D

How's the quality and the SFX level?
William
SFX level is low but the music and the voices have gone through the same makeover, making BOTH sound rather washed out. However there some tracks that don't suffer so much from this, because, obviously, there wasn't much dialogue to begin with. I am layman, but i think i would have done a better job.
I myself am working on the "V" series (CDs, promos) to give the score a more orchestral feel, you know that pseudo drum that became so prominent in the eighties, i managed to push it a bit into the background while enhancing the other instruments too; but i am not satisfied yet. I am also watching all Seasons of "Dallas" right now and make Bruce Broughton very best tunes. I must say though, that the Ewings have become rather an annoyance because of all their damned Car Driving. It's no problem to cut out a fraction of a second from, say, a door slammed closed, but you can't do that with a Cars motor. Same this true for the constant clinking of Ice in the Ewings regular Whiskeys. Also someone should have made them a different pavement in front of the house and also the swimming wouldn't do so much noise if it contained Honey instead of Water.
Imagine a TV series made just for people who would want to extract the music from. You would get weirder stuff than Twin Peaks and and Captain Picard driving a Buggy together!
PS: DID YOU READ my request for John Addisons "The French Atlantic Affair" Theme music?

Holy cow! I've wanted this album for years because it is contains one of the very rarest of things: The Star Trek theme recorded with Gene Roddenberry's lyrics! This album by jazz performer Judy Roberts rarely surfaces and almost never for less than $24 but I finally found a seller in the UK offering it for much less so I got it! Was it worth it? Yes, most definitely! This is a beautiful recording and I'm very happy to be sharing it with anyone interested out there in internetland! For those of you not wanting to download an entire jazz album for just one track, fear not -- this track will lead off the next installment in my compilation series Themes Of Star Trek (volume six) coming very soon!

She does look like Mary Steenburgen (in this picture at least -- not so much from the back cover photo)! Nichelle did a version with lyrics but they were not Roddenberry's lyrics. Different lyrics altogether. From what I can gather Judy Roberts was the first person to record the theme using Gene's lyrics.

Steroelf runs that blog with an iron fist, and won't allow any free speech or any of their stuff to be shared with anyone or any other site or blog. It's very subversive. He banned me from the blog for posting the score from "Caveman" that I got from another site. I told him that I didn't get it from his site, but he just got mad and banned me from the site anyway. Seriously? Because your comment was so vague that I couldn't help but think you were some sort of commercial spy sent to draw attention to yourself and anything else you could attach yourself to. If not you need to be more specific and thank individual posters for their efforts -- this vague 'thank you' looks quite strange.

Yeah, prior to being a DS9 hologram James Darren had quite a career. The Gidget movies, star of "The Time Tunnel", appeared in the film "The Guns of Navarone", was parodied as 'Jimmy Darrock' in an episode of The Flintstones, starred in "Bye, Bye Birdie" and two other albums with his co-stars there, co-starred with William Shatner on "T.J. Hooker" and directed many TV shows throughout the 80s.

Hey! I totally forgot about "Guns"!!! :) I remember that he wore that same type of shirt in that movie as well, it could have been from "Navarone" instead of "Time Tunnel". What the hell, I'm OLD! Hehehhehehe :)
Also, I didn't know that he was in "Bye Bye Birdie"? Are you talking about the movie with Ann Margaret? (Like I said, I'm old!)

William
I will clarify this now that I am no longer drunk (he says as he finishes off his first whiskey ginger of the evening) -- Darren didn't star in Bye Bye Birdie. Both the movie and the original Broadway cast featured Dick Van Dyke and Ann Margaret. Colpix Records got teen star Darren together with Shelley Fabares and Paul Petersen (both from The Donna Reed Show and also their own recording careers) plus The Marcels (who gained fame for "Blue Moon") to record a studio album with arrangements by Stu Phillips (he of later Battlestar Galactica score fame). Confusingly, the cover shows a scene from the 1960 movie version even though Darren et al weren't involved in it. Here it is:
Bye Bye Birdie (1963)
James Darren, Shelley Fabares, Paul Petersen, The Marcels, Stu Phillips Orchestra And Chorus
1. Put On A Happy Face - Darren, Fabares, Petersen
2. A Lot Of Livin' To Do - James Darren
3. Rosie - Paul Petersen
4. How Lovely To Be A Woman - Shelley Fabares
5. Baby, Talk To Me - James Darren
6. Kids (Folks) - Fabares, Petersen
7. Bye Bye Birdie - Shelley Fabares
8. I Love You Conrad - Stu Phillips Orchestra And Chorus
9. One Last Kiss - The Marcels
10. One Girl - Paul Petersen
11. Honestly Sincere - The Marcels
12. Bye Bye Birdie Medley - Stu Phillips Orchestra And Chorus
Ripped from vinyl, includes scans (my copy is signed by Paul Petersen).

Well, sad news. I checked the 7.1 blue-ray discs on TOS season one, and there are SFX in the music!!!! :( You would think with a whole new recording on that, that someone would have created ONE track of mono music that I can refilter into "stereo", but NOOOOOOO!!! They can't even do that. I really wonder some times about people in the studios. If they put ME in charge, I would re-release all the old stuff, like "FLINT" in STEREO!!! There is no reason that cannot be done.

Longer wait time of at least 5 minutes, and if you wan't to download 2 things from rapidshare, there's like an hour minimum wait once you've finished downloading the first, they really suck now.
Megaupload is the best, i always get my connection speed maxed out from them and can download another file straight away as soon as the first has finished.
Alright, the interface has changed from what it was, like, a week ago. There is a top bar with the title of the file and and upload button.
Below it as ad, next to which is three panels, Buy Rapid Pro Now (with a Buy Now button,) Save file to your computer (with a Pro Download button,) and Save file to your Rapidshare account (with a Save File button.) Below these three is a bar marked Free Download. Now the free download seems to be downloading Rapid Pro software. The Save File to Computer and Save File to Rapidshare Account buttons both open windows to register (for a low, low 4.11 Euros a month.)
So what steps are necessary to actually download a file? (And keep in mind, I can't afford a subscription.)
Incompetently,
JonC

Jon...click the big grey button that says free download. It will say underneath, in teeny letters, 5 min, and the clear bar next to the button will start filling up grey (underneath the bar, is an add to upgrade to pro). When the bar is totally grey, there is no more waiting, and the dl can begin....
---------- Post added at 07:30 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:28 PM ----------
In other words (i am not awake yet), where it looks like a progress bar to dl pro, is actually a bar showing how long to wait to dl for free, just go with it...
izbot

Use the Free Download button. It doesn't download Rapid Pro software. It is just an additional countdown (i.e. wait time) until you can download. Another new lame speedbump.

Back to Trek:
This weekend Damon Lindelof and the writers of the next Star Trek film said some reassuring things. Everyone (by that I mean fans) was talking about the possibility of remaking "Space Seed" with a recast Khan as the bad guy. Personally I felt this was a dumb idea, we've been there already. Lindelof has this to say:
"We love Trek too, but we want to also blaze our own trail here. The idea of just kind of playing cover songs and classics again – we feel like there has to be a little of that, but there has to be a lot of original music in the set list to be worthy of your time and attention. You don’t want to see a remake, you want to see a new movie. "
The script is well past the outline stage at this point -- it's about 85 pages long. At present they're set for December 2012 as the release date but are considering Summer 2013 if they think they need the extra time to get it perfect.

I maintain my thoughts on the newest movie, and do not hold out hopes for any further ones. Trek has been dormant before. It will survive now as it did then. I do not doubt their love of Trek, it is just that their idea of Trek doesn't jive with mine, or many other older Trek fans. In our day, it wasn't about whiz bang fx. Now, those seem to be the driving force behind most movies. It is not just this Trek, but 90 percent of the action films over the last 5 or more years. Just because you can show or do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD, and big fx scenes do not equal quality.
biff_stroganoff

Trek has been a part of my life for virtually as long as I can remember, and I mean that literally: one of my very earliest memories is of watching Star Trek with my father. I was born in 1974, too, so I'm not some noob to the Trek thing. I read the novels devotedly from about 1983-1993; I watched each new series as it came on the air; I saw every movie in the theatre, some of them more than once.
I've been a big Star Trek fan for over thirty years. And the Abrams movie fit my idea of a good Star Trek movie just fine. It's not my favorite; that's still The Motion Picture, with The Wrath of Khan coming in at second. But this one is third, and that's not because I'm some sort of fx junkie. It's because I enjoyed the characters and the actors playing them, and it's because the movie itself is a very fun adventure movie. One with some goofy science, granted, but this in a series in which an entire movie was devoted to Spock's previously-unknown brother flying to the center of the galaxy in, like, twenty minutes. There are episodes of the original series that are as dumb as a sock. There's nothing in this new movie that hasn't been done worse in Trek before.
But I get it. It didn't satisfy all fans the way it satisfied me. Thing is, I get that it's not for everyone; but there are a lot of Trekkies who just can't wrap their minds around the concept that other Trekkies DO like it. You'd hardly expect Star Trek fans to show that fundamental a lack of imagination, given that so many of us trumpet the power of imagination, but that's exactly what has happened, at least in some cases.
Thing is (part two), each time there has been a new iteration of Trek, there have been people who got riled up and decried it because it wasn't like "their idea" of Star Trek. Heck, I've even been one of those people on a couple of occasions (though in both cases -- Voyager and Enterprise -- I later reversed my opinions). But when TNG came around -- and yes, I watched it from the premiere on -- there were instantly people who wouldn't recognize it as proper Trek. Some of them enver reversed their opinions. Same happened with Deep Space Nine, and a lot of people now hold it to be the best of all of the series (not me, FYI). So, of course, same thing has happened now with the Abramsverse or whatever we're calling it. And yet, there's nothing in it that is fundamentally inconsistent with what's come before it. It's just a new spin on the old concept, which really isn't more elaborate than this: dudes in a ship crusing around getting into jams that cause them to illustrate for us, the viewers, lessons about The Human Condition. There's not as much of that Human Condition stuff in #11, granted; but it's there enough for me, at least as the first film in a series which will continue to develop as it progresses.
Even if I'd hated the Abrams movie, though, I'd be glad for it. Without it, it would have probably been a decade or more before anyone even considered trying Trek again. And if it had failed, it might have killed it forever. As is, assuming the movies continue to be as popular and as well-regarded as the last one was, it'll keep the whole shebang running for quite a while longer.
Personally, I'm thankful for that.

Well, and I am sure a lot of folks are. Now, don't get me wrong. I like Trek. BUT, (looks around nervously ), I really did not like the first movie. Puts me to sleep once the enter the cloud. But i do love the Klingon attack, and as a modler, I love every glorious shot of the Enterprise. A fanboy could masturbate to that movie...umm. Anyway, I also did not care for Trek 6, or Generations, or Insurrection. They aint gems. I really HATE Trek 5. Even Rodenberry said to dismiss large parts of that as far as canon goes. I dislike Voyager, and despise Enterprise....Every season of every show had its fair share of clunkers. I feel that it was not the movies that saved Trek, it was the fans who stuck it out, and the studio's needs to match Star Wars, and cash in. As long as they make money, they will get made. I think perhaps after Voyager, and Enterprise, episodic tv may have run its course. Face it, there is not a whole lot left to say there.
But, I ask, why do we need to do Kirk? Or any characters. Surely they could do big screen stories with new characters? I can't tell you exactly why as a whole the new movie bothers me. It isn't any one thing. I agree the writers should not be chained down by a half century of muddy continuity. I do get that. The Spock/Uhura thing bothers me. Not Spock, but Uhura. I think, if you are going to use the established characters, fine. Broaden them, fine. But i feel they should maintain their core ideals and personality. Spock...meh. But Uhura? She is an absolute professional. I seriously doubt she would get involved with any other cadet, but certainly never a superior officer, Never. She's just one of the very few women in the main cast, and so the "love story" was thrust onto her....err....but look. That story arc served no real purpose, other than to shock fans. Why do they have to have a romance at all? Especially in that particular story?
So. Just saying. Kirk as a bad boy turned noble. Check. Spock, struggling to balance his feelings and logic? Check. Some of this, like Scotty's intro, and Bones are fine. Even Sulu I guess. But, they NEED to stick with the main character's principals, or create new characters. Things like what shape the warp engines are and such are fun to nitpick, but not important overall. I just.....am bothered by the characters, and feel. Dunno. But hey, comedy moments aside, I am not a big fan of Trek 3 either. Now, DS9? That I could sink into for a 3 day marathon...go figure.

I hear what you're saying, babydoll. Don't take any of what I said as a criticism of your opinions; I definitely didn't mean it that way.
I'm with you on not liking The Undiscovered Country, by the way. The movie is fun, and has some good acting, but to me, the characters and ideologies feel all wrong. I don't buy the notion that Kirk and Scotty and Chekov, etc., would be the anti-Klingon racists that that movie makes them out to be. Yeah, yeah, I get it -- David Marcus was killed by a Klingon. Am I expected to believe that this would have been enough to turn Kirk into a bigot? Can't do it; not for a second.
As for the Spock/Uhura romance, I've got no problem believing in it. This version of Spock is a more emotional character; and this version of Uhura is a wet-behind-the-ears cadet. It's perfectly plausible that they would behave differently from the ways in which they behave within, say, the first season of the original series. My guess is that you'll see them grow more toward being those people as the movies continue. Also, it's worth noting that there are a couple of scenes during first-season episodes that seem to suggest some sort of relationship between the two. I think it's more a general sense of playfulness than it is an outright suggestion, but still, it is there.
One of the great things about Trek is that there's enough of it that hardcore fans can have endless debates like these! Sci-fi conventions practically exist for that very reason.

Well, I (for one) am getting REALLY tired of people who obviously are NOT Star Trek fans, who are in control of production in movies, constantly destroying what Gene Roddenberry has created. All of a sudden Spock is NOT the first Vulcan to join Starfleet (that was said in TOS) and Zephran Cockran is NOT from Alpha Centauri, but from Earth! Then Spock and Uhura are having an affair, and Vulcan gets destroyed? Add to that, if you look at the last STTNG movie "Nemesis" and the 2009 ST movie, you will see that they are basically the same plot, just reworked. In Nemesis, you have a Romulan clone of Picard that wants to destroy Earth with a new super weapon that can destroy whole planets, he HATES humans, and Picard especially! In the 2009 Star Trek movie, there is a Klingon from the future, with a weapon that can destroy whole worlds, who comes into the past searching for Spock, a person that he hates, and he wants to destroy Vulcan, and then Earth! Sound familiar? Just too much recycled CRAP!!!!

Indeed.
The only good thing is that it's SLIGHTLY better than proposed TOS reboot by J. Michael Straczynski. The guy's a good writer but the proposal stank! All of sudden, exploring space just for sake of exploring doesn't make sense. Well, actually, because Kirk's suddenly the youngest captain and mission has to be more specific. OOH! They search for the creators of humans, Vulcans, Klingons and clues are hidden in DNA... does that OH-SO-ORIGINAL-PREMISE sound familiar? And he thought about changing Scotty's gender just because new Battlestar Galactica changed Starbucks gender... sheesh.

I see the sad news is the passing of Fred Steiner 2 days ago. He will be well-known to all Trek music followers. Steiner died on June 23, 2011, after suffering a stroke.

Steiner was a really interesting composer, and had truly mastered the demands of episodic television. "Elaan of Troyius" has always been one of my favorite Trek scores.

Re: New Galactica
That is a fair point. And, I enjoyed the new series a hell of a lot more than the original. It was the best hour of drama on tv. I liked Starbuck being female. Boomer too. Because these days, casting WOULD have been more diverse. Back then no women were cast as the pilots (warriors). I seen to think, in the show itself even, having a female viper pilot was a giant deal. :( Well, in today's world, that's changed. Back then we had no female combat pilots or soldiers either, and now, we do. The show adapted to relflect the more modern times. I know, you could say all the same things about new Trek....
Remember the fuss over the first female captain lead?
So, when I suggest just setting the original aside and going with the new on a clean slate, yes, I realize how hypocritical that is. :b But still, I LOVED every aspect of new Galactica, score, production, acting, and awesome story telling. I did not like these aspects of Trek ((light). But I still could not tell you precisely why...
Cheap thrills all arround us. "Weapons of Mass of Destruction". The last time this was a fresh idea was Schwarzeneggers "True Lies" and that only because it was a mockery of the Genre.
True Lies is a remake of a French comedy called La Totale! (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Totale!) Parodies of spy movies began the moment spy movies became popular, most notably with films like Our Man Flint (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Man_Flint) (with score by Jerry Goldsmith.) So not only is True Lies not original, it is a copy of previous film in an old sub genre.

You could say Ryan Dunn from JackAss started the triad first and Peter Falk completed it. And even if you don't consider Ryan Dunn, Clarence Clemons from the 'E' Street Band died just before that.

Well, THERE you go! and, welcome to the board, Elemperador! I cannot understand why anyone would want to screwup a good thing. I HATED a female Starbuck! If they are going to do that, why not just change the name? It would be SOOOOO easy! What happened to "Boomer", and "Jolly"? If you are going to make a new original, KEEP IT ORIGINAL!! You can have a new story, just don't screw around with the crew!
William
I actually enjoyed the BSG reboot quite a bit--for mainstream television sci-fi, BSG took a lot of storytelling risks. One of those was the possibility of alienating the fan base, and clearly some were ... unhappy ... about the changes. I think Babydoll is on the money, though, re: the casting of female pilots. "Boomer" as a Cylon sleeper agent was an interesting twist. We never saw "Jolly," but in the 2003 miniseries, Galactica's CAG radioed him (her?) during the initial Cylon attack on the 12 colonies.

Well, original BSG did have female pilots, although they went slightly OTT with the all-female squadron when they were desperate for pilots, but it was a reflection of social attitudes somewhat. But there was Sheba, Anne Lockhart's character, who became one of the leads, she was Cain's daughter. But yes, casting nowadays would definitely be more diverse and so it should be. Tolkein fans bitched and moaned about changes to Lord of the Rings in order to incorporate more women, and the same will happen with The Hobbit, which has virtually no female presence. New BSG was incredibly well written, far better than the original, and I say this as a contemporary fan of the original show. The new Trek simply annoyed me because it was neither a sequel/prequel nor a clean reboot. It tried to be both to appeal to old and new fans and ended up annoying a lot of the old faithfuls.

Hi folks,
i just saw what must be the greatest Star Trek fan-movie ever! It plays on the original Enterprise with our beloved original crew (but other actors; however ...)
The Original Series Setting and George Takei, "Jeoman Rand", "Sulus Daugther" are starring in it. The Soundtrack is very, very, appropiate; that's true for the Special Effects too.
But the most important thing: This episode totally catches the spirit of Star Trek, you will have mpre
than just one Catharsis in this one. The episode starts out a little wooden and it feels like "Spock" is a bit to spockish and "Kirk" to kirkish, but their acting becomes better and better with every minute into the episode.
It has been a few minutes since i've watched this, but i am still a bit shocked how GOOD it was. I hope some non-network channel will pick this up to make it a seasons lasting effort. The visual quality is at least on par with Babylon 5. (i started with below episode and since it was such a great introduction to what they are doing, i think you should too.)

I'm with you on not liking The Undiscovered Country, by the way. The movie is fun, and has some good acting
I liked it too, but the whole Rura Pente (Gulag) happenings was a cheap filler, a trick to actually have an act two in the screenplay/movie - just think about it! You can replace this part with ANY complicacy you like, it wasn't really tied in that good into the whole story (while the magnetic boots and the klingon blood sample where; as was Valeris being a spy). Rura Pente feels very much auch out place. Kirk and McCoy are in jail. How does beeing being enjailed, they threatened, try to escape and are betrayed. Only the betrayal theme ties into the story, but that's at the very END of that Rura Pente plot device. Also Kirk and McCoy only care to escape for themselves what about all the others? Kirk and McCoy should at least have very short dialogue, they can't cause yet another diplomatic incident by helping the prisoners (Diplomacy is one of the main features in Undiscovered Country).
Amanda
06-26-2011, 12:28 AM
Did you SEE the rest of the prisoners? Obviously, Kirk and McCoy were the only innocent prisoners there....:b
I mean, just look at 'em...:)
Rura Pente was the logical conclusion of the trial, which was the logical conclusion of taking the fall for Gorkon's death. To me, one of the main themes of Undiscovered Country was the notion, very prevalent in TOS, that regulations were to be followed until they weren't. It allows for Sulu's actions, as well as Valeris'. The trial puts a fine point to this, which is what makes it work so well, and like Wrath of Khan, Kirk must now cash the checks his actions have been writing for years. The prison was a good image, especially Kirk and McCoy in rags and dirty uniforms. (A more powerful image with the movie's more formal uniforms as compared with less formal series ones.)
They have a very nice quite moment for Kirk to reflect on his recent state of mind. As for breaking out the others, a,) there is a ticking clock to stop a war, breaking out everybody else is not an option. b) despite Kirk and McCoy being political prisoners, there is no reason to believe all, or most, or even any of the other prisoners do not deserve to be here. At the very least there is no time to figure who should go and who should stay. And to just release on the galaxy, (and more likely the Federation,) what are very hardened criminals would be irresponsible.
Oddly enough, I found the boots quite sloppy. They were an arbitrary device to pad for time. Spock's initial statement is itself not logical. "You're forgetting something, Mr. Chekhov. According to our ship's databanks, this ship fired those torpedoes. If we did, the killers are here. If we did not, whoever altered the databanks is here. In either case, what we are looking for, is here. " Valeris says they are looking for gravity boots, but this is not so. If it is the case that the assassins did not come from Enterprise, but only whoever altered the records did, then there are no boots to find.

At the very least there is no time to figure who should go and who should stay. That's exactly the DISCUSSION Kirk and McCoy should've had! Of course they can't break the others out, it would'nd fit the movie anymore than Rura Pente does right now.
... regulations were to be followed until they weren't ... The trial puts a fine point to this, which is what makes it work so well, and like Wrath of Khan, Kirk must now cash the checks his actions have been writing for years.
I am satisfied with the plot up to the end of the trial. That Kirk and McCoy are in jeopardy and the Crew and Sulu are WRITTEN to go against Federation Orders is an old hat since STIII but since this was the last movie, friendship needed to be stressed and i too would'nt want it any other way.
But here's another thought: General Chang. Put yourself in his (spiky :D ) boots. He plots the assasination of the Chancelor, the Enterprise/Federation are the ones to put the blame on. His plan collapses when Kirk surrenders the Enterprise. The Chancelor is dead but his daughter is still for the peace treaty. That must have been come as quiet a surprise for him. Now what's his immediate problem, what must he do next, if that peace conference is on the Horizon?
The problem is not Chang here, it's the new Chancelor. She is all for the trial, it's most probably her idea ("Kirk will pay for my father death"). I would have been better she would not want that trial at all an sees Kirk as innocent. Then and only then the trial makes any sense for Chang to put any effort into findig Kirk guilty. Convince the Counselor of Kirk and the Federation not being trustworthy. Chang giving only support to the trial is almost a waste of his precious time. He needs to blow up the peace conference. Putting Kirk into jail is at best secondary, because Kirk has no proof of this involvement in the assasination nor is it any trouble to defeat him in battle (he'd proven that when he'd hoped for one) at the Peace Conference.
Chang could have very well moved on with his plans without helping getting Kirk out of the way. If the end of the trial was supposed to cause tension on the peace conference, maybe stopping it before it happens, we should have been told so. It would't have revealed Changs being behind the assasination, we already know he is against peace; that doesn't make him a traitor though, he can cause trouble without us knowing that he his behind the assasination.
I am sorry, there are to many plot holes and intelligent characters acting stupid just drive me mad.

No. Not at all. Such a conversation would have been a tangent with no payoff except to bring the film to a complete halt. It has no bearing on what has happened before, either expositionally, or thematically. It is a dead end. If you really need it, save or for the novel.

Chang's actions are completely reasonable. Within the world view of his character, his may be the most reasonable. He's also patient, and has his eyes on the long game. (He turns down a chance to attack immediately after Gorkon's death, differing to the new Chancellor. After all, war is not his goal; preventing peace is.) Kirk is a loose end. He must be disposed off, even before you consider his reputation for pulling off really crazy shit. He can't kill him immediately, (too much heat,) so he'll get him convicted. If he's executed after a lawful judgment, great. Sent to Rura Pente, he arranges to have them killed while escaping. Perfect, because it would be plausible Kirk would try. And it would have worked, except for the unexpected arrival of the Enterprise. Even here, however, Chang is on top of it, being pre-deployed to the Bird of Prey, ready to intercept Kirk if he escapes. Why stop Kirk? Did you not here his resume during the trial? He's Kirk, that's enough. Chang worked as hard as he could without blowing his cover to have Kirk removed. Chang may or may not have known that the peace conference was on when he agreed to prosecute Kirk. From Chang's position it doesn't matter. From the film's perspective, Chang's actions keep him in the forefront of the action without revealing he's the Big Bad.
Chang is not sweating the peace conference at all. He certainly knew it was a possibility. It doesn't matter. The conference is being covered by Admiral Cartwright and Colonel West. And it would have worked, if Chang had been able to do his job in stopping Kirk from reaching Kitomer. (Or even delayed them another 30 seconds.)
Chang had a plan, a backup plan, and was prepared to react to surprises. He's not stupid, he just got outplayed. But it's not his fault, he was up against the best. Few people can beat Kirk, that's why he's Kirk.
Of course, that Chang, and Cartwright must work closely (and with deep trust,) to maintain their animosity and mistrust is a very deliberate irony.
As for the Sulu and the Enterprise breaking the rules, the point of Undiscovered Country is that they are not really rogues at all, that they represent a pervasive attitude within Starfleet that the rules are to be followed only when convenient. Valeris' betrayal is all the more damning, because, deep down inside, Kirk (and Spock,) know she's not really being anymore disobedient then they've been dozens of times before. She's breaking the 'rules' because she feels it's in the greater good of the Federation. Once again, Kirk is being confronted by the costs of his own actions.
Whew,

Speaking of the tech manuals, did anyone find the studio model pics I posted of any use? I can do the rest, including Enterprise A. I enjoy having good shots of the actual model to go with the blueprints. They often get the drawings wrong...:) Although, the set of prints put out for the Motion Picture are very accurate, and very well done.

Of course. :D
I plan on scanning my copies of The Star Trek Encyclopedia: A Reference Guide to the Future (Updated and Expanded Edition, 400 pages) and Star Trek Chronology: The History of the Future (First Edition, 192 pages) however it will take some time because of the large number of pages of the Encyclopedia alone.

Looking at those pictures, the one thing that I really do not understand about Jeri Ryan is this: In an interview, she said that she really hated people commenting about the size of her "Assets" (Boobs), and yet in Voyager, she did that "Nude" scene with the doctor painting her naked, although we never get to see anything! Then she did that TV show about the Boston school system, where she was always showing off her boobs, running around in just a shirt, unbuttoned to the bottom button, just being a tease, if you ask me. And then she jumped into bed with that Brandon Braga creep, and I lost all respect for her, well, the little that I had.
AND, speaking of which, with the "New" Trek movie series supposedly coming up, that's what we need, more nudity and sex situations. Why does Trek always have to be so "G" rated, family oriented scifi? I'm sure they are having sex in the 23rd and 24th centuries, so LET'S SEE SOME!!!! :)

You misspelled that, it's supposed to read "let's see threesomes!!!! :)"
What's "G" rated by the way, we don't have that over here. Does it have to do with the spot which's going by the same name? Hell, i'd dig American family entertainment :P
Regarding Jerry Ryan: I don't know that Brandon Braga fella but i don't respect Jeri Ryan any less showing off her boobs; sure, she ain't Jean Seaberg, but a qualified actress she is. And don't forget: Our Industry is called SHOW (<- gramatic case of imperative) business, so how can yah blame her. I am sure a lot of composers aren't any different: She got a big piano in the living room and she sure doesn't hide it, when you're invited to her party. Pornographic all that music is, pornographic! :D
