I agree, after 2009 one, it wasn't worth the (insert medical condition) to watch a remake of the 2009 movie. I can't wait to see what JJ does to Star Wars! Well....maybe I can.

I enjoyed both new Star Trek's and they take nothing away from any Star Trek that came before.
Enjoy the original Star Trek, its always going to stand the test of time.
Some of you need to stop acting like its real life and people died because a new vision and fresh financial success was given to a stagnant movie franchise.
I'm looking forward to the lens flare Star Wars and JJ's Star Trek III.
Rick Berman was the true evil and near death nail for Star Trek.
Anywho.

I do agree that movies don't take away from the older ST, but, I wished it was less FX, more story at a pace to really get into them.
I grew up with TOS, so it is special, so I protect it.
And, you are SO RIGHT, about Rick Berman. Enterprise would have been a better series, if he would have honored what was seen in TOS, because it was to be a prequel. Same goes for Lucas with his prequels, messed up!

They should replicated TOS production design, they really should have. It would have been a stand-out show. What is popular today? Mad Man that starts in 1950s. Magic City, though now cancelled, in 1960s. I could go on. There is a strong urge to relive the old times and really only Star Trek has it's roots in that, needs no excuses to continue right there and above that would be a SciFi-Show unparalleled in it's look against today's or upcoming scifi-shows. And that's exactly what you want in a TV show. To be instantly recognizable. Enterprise wasn't, they borrowed so heavily from TNG and the movies, but those were just yesterday and what was yesterday is old. Mad Man is freh, exactly because it is older than most of the audience can remember. Before yesterday always resonates more than just yesterday. It's a paradox, but it the truth.

Well, that's what I was expecting. Some effort to interpolate a series based on existing data, with new elements developed and original ideas expanded. Someone recently mentioned here that TOS was low-tech. This was an incredible statement. Mind blowing in fact. Huh...(sigh), "I AM TIRED!". Continuing. Sci-fi, Retrospective and Period shows have always featured on tv and the big screen. It's the filmmaker's (writers included) ability to make a story worth watching that counts. Budget constraints can make that job harder, but an inventive maker will find a way to make those one or two hours interesting for the audience. TOS is an interesting case. So much so that I'm probably going to spend half an hour writing about it.
By the 1960s there had been many sci-fi stories published in magazines and comics, broadcast on radio and tv, and projected in the cinema. Roddenberry had his own ideas about what a show should be. Based around naval hierarchical command structures, people get on with other people, except where there are exceptions, i.e. a bit of roughhousing in the corridors, a starship would take humans, with the odd alien, on an exploration of space and the human condition.
Back then, there were no LCD screens which could be used to make a fancy realistic, perhaps plausible, Tricorder. Integrated circuits were not in full swing and computers used magnetic tape, and printed results on paper mostly, and all were prohibitively expensive and frankly non-sci-fi looking, to use in a tv show. Production designers had their work cut out. Budget constraints limited the 'quality'. These people were making mock-ups of fanciful technology. Technology that came from the creative minds of sci-fi writers who invented imaginative situations for that technology. This was science-fiction from scratch.
Later shows like Battlestar Galactica from the early 80s had slightly better production and cool Cylon robots and spacecraft, but were a bit formulaic - blasting action with non-cerebral stories that never went anywhere. Great for youngsters, or disposable viewing. The same could be said about Enterprise - way too much resemblance to Westerns in terms of a shoot-out every five minutes. With a good budget however, some talented special effects people and some top-notch consultants, 2001: A Space Odyssey was made in the late 60s. This film kicks the ass of most new sci-fi films and will probably continue to do so. Not all that glitters is gold. C'est la vie.

Yep! And about some of what else you wrote: Creativity from constraints... :)
These three words opened my eyes and changed my heart when reading them, in a flash. Like, any genre, no matter how formulaic, can be made in an awesome manner and be fresh, if you just do it right :)

Most people rely on critics and reviewers to say if a series or movie is worth watching. If I listened, I would never watch some of them. I take a chance, but, a good story, good actors are a must, the effects work, is the candy. Some candy is bad for you, some not. For me, I prefer less candy.
In the past, I watched a movie or a few episodes of a series, and got it. Now a days, more episodes, and two times for the movie to get it. Too much fluff, no substance to really understand it, if at all right away.
That is why, the older, the more entertaining fun.

OK I didn't like the reboot and I've not bothered with the second film as a result. I grew up watching the original series during one of its many repeat runs on BBC TV back in the 1970s and hated the way the reboot messed with my childhood by changing just about everything bar the names. They should have just taken 'Star Trek: Voyager' to the big screen instead as that's my second favourite after the original of course! I didn't get into that until after it had finished its initial run, and then I had all these lovely piles of videos to watch, which I did one after the other for a couple of weeks - was bliss!

Checkout google for "Convoluted Blockbuster"
Also i read some nice screenwriting advice: "Lay your cards on the table early (in the story). Forces you to come up with new cards!" Which is exactly why you "got it", that soon. There was no hiding, no stalling, no superficial(!) late reveals/surprises. Stories took a turn, yeah, but they weren't turned around. That's writers wanting to baffle you with clever storytelling, artistic arrogance. Take a modern movie like U-Turn. Does none of those mistakes. Or Outbreak. We know that the assholes are assholes right from the start. They show us the monkey, they show us the antidote and and and...

One thing I like/liked about British series, is that they let you get used to the character, create a story you can get into, and then the payoff. A Lot of the older US series were like that.
Now to put this fact out, I have not watched TV...cable, satellite, or over the air, in 8 years. When a series, tv mini series, or movie comes out on DVD and the story line catches my eye, I will buy them. I HATE COMMERCIALS, so DVDs make the shows more enjoyable. So, if by any chance a series is watchable, since I gave up TV, I can't say. Since I thrive on SCI-FI, I usually check them out first on DVD.
As for ST on DVD, I still need to get the rest of NG and Voyager. I have the other series, except the new effects TOS, I haven't made up my mind yet. I have all of the movie, except 2009, and never will own it and Into Darkness. I really want Voyager, because I like what I saw on TV, the exploring new worlds thing.

Hi, anyone have the Scans from the new ST-Insurrection Expanded Edition?
Williamtaylor1969
08-17-2013, 05:33 PM
Well, people, to add my two cents to the problem:
Star Trek, both the TOS and the new movies, and everything in between, really didn't take a long, hard look at what was written in Scifi novels before production design began. With the TOS, we already have cell phones that are the communicators, our laptop computers are SO much better than the old tricorders, and now they are talking about inventing a TREK style transporter, many centuries before TOS was supposed to be, even before "Enterprise" (where they were first testing the transporter on board a starship). With STTNG, everything was "touchpad" enabled, which we all have RIGHT NOW, the new generation of laptops have touchscreens, and the screen can be pulled away from the keypad section, looking very much like a PADD!!! Of course, we have PADDs right now, with Kindle, and all the other E-reader devices out there. The only thing from TREK that is not in our world today is the Medical bed from sickbay! I have to laugh when I think about that, because when TOS came out, three doctors in Boston were going to sue Gene, because they claimed that they came up with that idea for the medical bed, and they were going to get a patent for it!! No lawsuit ever showed, and the doctors have totally disappeared in history! :)
But what I am saying is, if you extrapolate what we have today, what we had 100 years ago, or even 50 years ago, you should be able to imagine what we would have in another 50 to 100 years, and go from there. The touch screens from STTNG should have been on the TOS bridge! Instead of turbolifts, they should have used the transporter technology to create a "doorway" to instantly transport the person from deck 1 to deck 14, or where ever! You just have a doorway on the wall, very much like that one episode of STTNG, where Picard jumped onto the Romulan ship, and then was transported to the Enterprise. In the TOS era, that should have been possible! Of course, in TREK, whenever they get advanced technology like that, the writers always, ALWAYS have a sitaution where the technology is destroyed, as in that one STTNG episode!!!!! :(
Imagine what Starfleet could have done with that technology, we would have no need for starships, since Data had said that the people from that planet had used their transporters to visit other worlds!!!! AND, we go back to the technology of the advanced race that was used with "Gary Seven"!! They transported across the galaxy as well (Hmmm, could have have been the SAME advanced race????)
Anyway, 300 years in the future, we should have a completely different world, and totally different technology. A little over 120 years ago, Nicola Tesla created alternating current, the neon and florscent lights, the generating plants at the dams in our world, and basically completely changed our world. If it was left up to Edison, every house in our country, or our world, would have to have a large electrical generator, possibly gas powered, sitting outside of the house, to generate 110 volts, since direct current drops off over 50% in 50 feet, so the generator would most likely be located outside the kitchen, since that is where most of our electrical items are located. The living room in EVERY house would have to be next to the kitchen, since that is where the rest of the items are located, for the most part.
Now, as for the future, there should be, or would be NO manual instrumentation at all, everything should be controlled by mental command, just like the Krell in "Forbidden Planet". Of course, there would be massive safeguards, and the command would have to be in the forefront of your mind, NOT tapping into the deep, dark recesses of your subconscious, as was done to the poor Krell! What I am saying is that there should be no reason for anyone to push a button, tap a touchpad, etc.
And the readouts should be holo technology, appearing in the air in front of you! Of course, there would have to be some indication of what station you were looking at, so you could open a communications channel, or check your engineering readouts, whatever. As I said, when you want to leave the bridge, and go to your cabin, you just walk right into a wall, and it beams you directly to your cabin. Of course, there would have to be manual access, in case something happens with the power, and you need to get back to the bridge, hehehehehe :)
I'm reading a book right now, where the people wear a "torc" around their necks, and thru mental command, it becomes a shield armor around their body, fending off any attacks, from any device. It just absorbs the engery of the device, including "eating" bullets!!! I thought that in the future, we would have something like that, so there would be no reason to have phasers to disable, or even kill any other person or alien! TREK for the future should be about LEARNING about other lifeforms and civilizations, not about starting wars with other planets (even thou in our Star Trek universe, others always start the wars with Earth, not like the US starting wars all over the planet, hehehehehe).
When I was in college, I wrote a treatment for a story, about a professor (fashioned after one of my teachers) who discovers a rosetta stone that is a map which leads to an area of Iraq, where he and his associate, discover an endless well, going down thousands of feet into the Earth. On the side of this well, is a metal door, that has not been touched for 1000s of years. Pushing a button, and opening the door, these two men enter a small spaceship, which takes them out to the Kuiper belt, out past Pluto, where one of the asteroids is not an asteroid, but a space station, which opens up, upon their approach, and reveals a space dock with hundreds of space ships! Talking with the computer on the flag starship, they find out that this space station was one of many, all set to help the humans, which were sent to Earth about 15,000 years ago, to survive an evil alien race that was set to kill all the humans in the whole galaxy. Different stations were set up in all corners of the galaxy, kind of a "Operation spoilsport", where we come back after a certain time, when the enemy thinks we are all dead, and come back stronger to kill them all, catching them offguard. Long treatment short, the professor gets a crew, gets everyone riled up, and takes the starship fleet to kill the enemy aliens, but when they arrive, they find that the aliens have evolved beyond evil intentions, and are a peaceloving race. They form a bond, only to find that another alien race is coming to attack THIS alien race, and just the show of force from our heros is enough to scare off the invaders!
Everyone lives in peace! :) Anyway, I had envisioned all sorts of advanced technology, when I was in college, back in the 70's!!!! Why couldn't others think like that?
Just my two cents.

William, everytime you do speak, pure gold! So true on the tech issue, it bothered me that most in TOS is outdated now. But, look at all that inspired many to create and surpass what was seen, Sci-Fi in general give the ideas that change our world. A lot has happened, except the flying car, yet. Technology scares me some on how fast it is moving and how humans are sometime overwhelmed by it. The smart phones and other devices are going to destroy civilization as we know it, in that we who use it will depend on it too much, and thinking for oneself will fade away. When educators say that our next generation don't need the schooling we got, because smart devices take up the burdens, that will dumb them down and they will get lazier. Why learn, just look it up.
Some examples, they are saying cursive writing is not needed, since you can sign electronically now a days. Fraud will increase, since you can't compare your signature. Another, I use Google Chrome and the spellchecker has improved so much, that it can tell how I structure a sentence and correct it. I used to look up in a dictionary book for the words, and it kept my mind working. Now the computer does the thinking, and we can become idiots more. If the grid collapse and cell towers fall, you can't get the info you need, panic. We saw some of it during the super storms, and if terrorist attack places that provide use with our info and power, scary.

ask someone (if we could, I mean) from 1713 to imagine 2013.....
How COULD they imagine, say, an ipod?
or technical progress?
Clarke's Three Laws are three "laws" of prediction formulated by the British writer Arthur C. Clarke. They are:
When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
Williamtaylor1969
08-17-2013, 07:34 PM
Well, then, my dear, we need more MAGIC! I almost forgot to mention also, that there most certainly will be an increase in natural human abilities, such as telekinesis, self healing, as Deforest Kelly had spoken about in one interview, and many other human abilities that I personally believe that we have just forgotten, or were repressed over the generations! Imagine what supermen and superwomen we could be right now, if those abilities were increased in the past, instead of repressed! Imagine what our society would be like, if that were to happen.
There is very little difference between science and magic!

A scf-fi reference to science and magic, Technomages from Babylon 5. To a few of the primitive races around that have not been exposed to our devices, could think of them as magic. We do rely on too many modern inventions, instead of relying on our bodies, and brain to heal, move objects and such. With some training from those that understand the way, we can seem like we are super. Modern gadgets are a marvel, but, we have lost so much to them, and relying on companies is our worst mistake, they profit, we lose more of ourselves.

Critics and Reviewers! bah humbug!!!
I have yet to see a college course taught "Critic 101" anywhere in this country, critics and reviewers are nothing but reporters that can not write news story's. Some of you may remember Siskel & Ebert? but do you remember their review of Star Wars? (I mean the very first one 1977) they both give it thumbs down! (both idiots) and had to apologizes to there viewers when the movie went ballistic at the box office. After watching these two knuckle heads, I stopped listening to so called critics and reviewers, and started to just go see a movie based on the trailers, friends, family or just for the hell of it. I'm with you AZ! these newer films are just fluff!! It has been a few years that a movie has reached out and touched me! sad.

William
"The Cage" with Jeffrey Hunter had Spock waving his arm at a console. Nintendo I think. He wasn't laughing, so I guess he wasn't winning.
William
It's true, the body does heal itself. Doctors doctor, if they healed, they would be called healers. I'm almost positive they wank though. Wankers! The healing ability can be inhibited by outside factors such as crap food aka poor diet / lack of essential foods, strong EM frequency proximity, pharmaceutical drugs with side-effects, depression, stress and so on. But unfortunately, it's incapable of defending itself against a bad Trek film. On a positive note, a million dollar prize has been offered to anyone who can make a prototype of a functional medical tricorder. I'm off to the shed.
Science-fiction is quite often used as pre-programming of the population. Leaving Star Trek aside, an important piece of science-fiction is Ghost in the Shell. Cutting to the chase and somewhat simplifying the key technology, future society is basically implanted to varying degrees with a cyberbrain. It's essentially a mechanism to connect the brain to the internet. Commit this to memory and don't take it lightly. {dramatic and sad, but hopeful overture plays} Let the fun and games ensue...

I remember watching a episode from Sea Quest DSV where they received a message for help! and went to investigate and are transported to the future! there they find that the message came from the master computer that connected everyone in the world together (the Internet today) and found out humanity had all died off, but two! (one twenty something male and female) because humanity relied so much on the computer, there was no need for humans to interact anymore! so no children were born! both of them had never met in person and spent there whole waking hours playing games with each other! The crew had to get the two of them together and begin to interact with each other and develop a relationship together or humanity would die off completely. A interesting story! and one that seems to be headed that way today! Technology is great thing but to much dependence on it does make people dumb (reelecting the current knot head in the Oval Office is a good example) and one more thing, is humans are not perfect, so whatever we build is going to fail, and to rely to much on technology and not go outside and smell the roses, as it were! or not interact with other humans is a disaster waiting to happen.
Personally I prefer to get my information from more then one source! (Internet, books, newspapers, TV, Radio) or the tried and true "Mark Ones" (Eyeball's) and of course personal experience goes a long way. I have learned the hard way to rely on my self! (the old military additive "take care of yourself first! because no one else is going to") comes to mind! (not that I am selfish) but protecting ones life is paramount! Because if your down who is going to protect my family and property or the person that needs help? Guess my old training is kicking in again....sorry for rambling.

Scott, I'm sure we have different mother, and it would have been cool to have you as a brother, but, friends are close enough.;)
We were born and raised in a era of fun, enjoyable, and watchable TV and movies, that had stories, not this fast, FX fluff, those were the days. With DVDs and VHS, we do enjoy those days.
I have the 1st and 2nd seasons of Doctor Who, so far, and there is a two part story on the 2nd season with Who and Rose on a space base by a black hole you will really enjoy, my favorite ones.
Right now, I am enjoying watching TAS again. At the same time, I am extracting music from the discs, in the hope of creating a soundtrack with no sound effects and vocals. So far, very good results.
Yep! because if not my brothers would be really pissed!! lol And I would have loved to have you as a brother too, my younger brothers and I are like night and day, they have more incommon with each other then with me (in just about everything)...go figure!
Yes we did indeed have a wonderful, enjoyable world to live in. I can't wait to watch Doctor Who seasons 1 and 2!!! :)
TAS!! Cool, I had almost forgotten about that show, now you got me thinking about getting that one too!! (my poor bank account) Good luck with pulling the music off! I hope you will post it (hint, hint hehehehe)
Good to see you almost back to normal!! No pain does a body and mind good!

My brother is half way apart in my interest, but, I am very good at corrupting. When I get the TAS soundtrack finished, to my satisfaction (I'm real picky about music) then I will upload.
I am doing better than I though I would, thanks and world, watch out, I'm back!

Sure, a TV series could be made from more realistic extrapolation of technology and given us matter transfer across the stars instead of ships, beaming energy from the power core to the rest of the ship and other stuff like that. But part of what was on their minds in creating Star Trek was making sure the audience could relate to what was going on. Star Trek was not about the real future. It was "contemporary man in a futuristic setting" in order to tell Jonathan Swift style tales. Remember, they created futuristic medical devices for The Man Trap, but went with salt shakers because they didn't want the instrumentation to be too far out. So, a fork was a fork because that's what the audience used.
Honest to God science fiction authors contributed to Star Trek back then and you can't say they weren't forward thinking. Yet the series wasn't a novel or a feature picture; it was a weekly television series that had to appeal to the mass audience. Not just sci-fi geeks, but Mr and Mrs Johnson on Evergreen Street in Anywhere USA. And you know what? It did! You know what else? Star Trek was a bigger success than anyone has ever admitted. Buy this new book on the creation of the series:
These Are The Voyages Volume 1 by Marc Cushman
These are the Voyages, TOS, Season One (These are the Voyages, TOS): Marc Cushman, Susan Osborn: 9780989238113: Amazon.com: Books (
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0989238113/ref=s9_simh_gw_p14_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=05QSQ54VYFH4662NJCHQ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1389517282&pf_rd_i=507846)
Using production and network documents, Cushman tells the story of the series in exquisite detail. The most shocking thing was that the ratings, never before released to the general public, told a much different story than has been passed on for 45 years. Star Trek was a hit when it premiered. The first episode aired was seen on 47% of all TVs in America! It was doing well in the top 40 throughout its first season, doing better than Batman, Lost in Space, The Fugitive, The Time Tunnel and more. The reasons why the show was always "this close" to cancellation will be covered in volume 2, but this was a huge shock to me. In spite of what everyone has said for decades, Star Trek was indeed a hit. At least in its first year.
I doubt it would have been if the show was created by a true futurist and made to be a real examination of the future. No, Star Trek was there to comment on the current times. Not the far flung world of tomorrow. If you compare the differences in mankind of today with those of man in 1813, you'll see a vast difference in the way of life, speech, attitudes, dress and so on. Projecting ahead 200 more years, what would man be like then? Probably unrecognizable and definitely unrelatable. All SF shows do this, not just Trek. It's not a fault or a mistake. In fact, it's what makes us identify with the characters. Anything else would fail.
All sci-fi becomes dated as the real future arrives. However, so does any TV series. Watch The Fugitive today and see how different the world is. Everything dates. That's the way of the world.

I almost made a reference to The Fugitive earlier on, but was too lazy - the context would have been different to yours though. But, what a great show that was. Every week a new town and a new story and charactes, but continuing an underlying theme. And it was black and white, not like Police Squad In Color.

Yes, I agree, that Roddenberry wanted to use devices that his audience could relate to, because people were SOOOOOOOO stupid back in the 1960's!!! That's what the NETWORK thought, my friends, but Gene didn't want to buy into that BS! He didn't want someone to stand center stage, with a Phaser in his hand, and spend the time to explain to the audience what, exactly, a Phaser was, and how it worked! Gene wanted the audience to just accept that this is a "zap" gun, and just go from there. The human ability to accept the future has been vastly under-rated, right down to that book "Future shock"! I read that back in the 70's or 80's, and I could not believe what governmental BULLSHIT that guy was shoveling to his readers! As Gene said, so succinctly, "The audience is ready for the 23rd century TODAY, they are tired of their visionless leaders, and (hopeless situations in life) to paraphrase the last part!
And I believe him. If the US government would suddenly admit the fact that they have had the alien technology from Roswell, that we can now not only fly all over the world, but to other planets in our system with a "flying saucer" type craft, the public, on the whole, would accept it in a New York minute (just curious, is that faster than a standard minute?) (Hehehehehehehe)
I mean, HELL, the CIA just got caught admitting that "Area 51" does exsist! So the government has been lying to us all, all this time!!!
Two things caught my eye, about 5 years ago.
1. I read a report that some medical specialists had created an enzyme that would "encapsulate" any cancer cells in the human body, and ONLY cancerous cells, not normal cells, thereby starving the cancer cells to death, and would then be discarded by the body, along with all other waste products. This miracle enzyme has never been seen again, because if it were released, it would cost billions of dollars to the drug companies who make anti-cancer drugs! The FDA is completely controlled by the drug companies, and this is a situation that will NEVER see the light of day.
2. I read a report that an "anti-gravity" device was just sent to a "think tank" company in Seattle. It was described as a 5 foot gold disc, and when a 12 volt car battery was attached to the disc, a 100 pound weight was only now just 90 pounds, 10 pounds lighter!!! That was 5 years ago, and I cannot find any news on the progress of this anti-gravity project!
It seems that no matter how much we progress, the more we have to wait. It seems that special interests all over the world want us to remain exactly as we are, digging deep into our pockets to throw an endless stream of money in their direction!
When I think of where we could be right now, it just makes me ill and angry.

Which is exactly what they did. The audience bought it, but Star Trek didn't invent laser pistols. Audiences have seen them used on film since the Flash Gordon serials. Nobody in the audience needed them explained (Lost in Space didn't spend any time 'splaining them either). But the people in the series were 20th Century humans. In attitude and speech. Roddenberry okayed every prop design on the series, so it was he, not the network, that made sure everything would be recognized. It's not that the audiences were considered stupid, but not everyone was into science fiction, so compromises had to be made to make sure the series would appeal to a broader audience. So, the phaser was designed to be held and recognized as a gun. No need to explain it when you can see it fire a beam and a guy falls down. However, if they intended to truly depict a world hundreds of years from now, the technology and speech would be so alien that everything probably would have to be spelled out. For a good example of this, check out the Outer Limits episode "Soldier" written by Harlan Ellison. A solider from the future makes no sense to the men of the 1960's because the slang used was unrecognizable. A fine one-shot episode, but on a weekly basis would be a voyage to the bottom of the ratings.
As for the rest of your post, I agree that a lot of medical advances are stunted and squashed because of greed. People die while corporations make money. However, we have other, less important technology that explodes faster than possible and runs people out of business because we get what we need on them innernets. Having alien technology? I don't know, maybe. Even if we do have a captured ship in Arizona someplace, would we be able to figure it out?

You've been kind to call them "special interests". Let's be fair. They are a wealthy psychopathic (i.e. extremely stupid) class which at any cost suppresses and throttles anybody and anything that may affect their status. You mentioned Tesla earlier. Didn't he make some giant device to generate free energy, which was immediately snapped up by JP Morgan and never seen again? Unfortunately, there is another side to the problem of retarded progress and that is the ignorant uninformed majority, which funnily enough allows itself to be manipulated by the psychos.

It has been a few years that a movie has reached out and touched me! sad.

AZ You sure we were not from the same mother and just separated after birth!! lol
I do watch TV! every now and then, but like you I watch my DVD's or VHS Tapes, Right now I just finished Voyager season 2 and will be ordering season 3 in a few weeks, for the same reasons you stated. I check the SfyFi channel every so often but find nothing worth a damn to watch (unless they show reruns of Stargate or there older produced movies) and I have ordered Doctor Who season 1 and will go on from there! I do watch BBC America, they do have some good shows! some better then what we have here today. Just my two cents worth...
Scott
Doctor Who seasons 1 to 4 and the "Specials" are really good Scotty Christopher Eccleston in season 1 and David Tennant in 2,3,4 and the specials. Season 5 on are poor by comparison, I wouldn't waste your money on those ones. I know the story you speak of AZSneed the first episode is "The Impossible Planet" and the second is "The Satan Pit". I would agree with you, they are good episodes.

One of the things I like about "Duck Dodgers" was the fan produced "The empire strikes QUACK"!!!, which used the soundtrack from Duck Dodgers, but scenes from Star Wars, the original series of films, and now, I just found out, that the version that Darren Doctermann had helped with, no longer exsists! The OTHER guy decided to re-edit the footage, and not include Darren's name in the final mix! Kind of like when James Crawface decided to kick Mr. Marshal out of the production of Star Trek the new voyages, and take over production himself! Just like what Paramount did to Gene Roddenberry! This all leaves a very foul taste in my mouth! WANKERS!!!!

Agree and I do own a copy of the box set, courtesy of a very generous brother-in-law. Sadly, my 3-year old son got hold of it a few weeks after it arrived and - whilst the CDs thankfully survived the experience - neither the booklet or the actual box did. He spent some time on the naughty chair to contemplate his behaviour (or, to be precise, the lack thereof), as did I when my wife deemed my language excessively inappropriate... So, I would love some scans as the shreds I've got left are a little difficult to read...

William
Thing is, fiction often inspires inventors. For example, inventor of the cell phone was inspired by the communicator from Star Trek! So due to that, what was once a far away futuristic dream is now present day reality!
Laptops being better than tricorders... ummm, since when can laptops scan people and diagnose them? :P
Though there's work being done on a real life tricorder... inspired by Star Trek!
Turbolifts - I haven't heard of real life lifts that can go in other directions besides up and down, soooo...
NiKola Tesla, not NiCola Tesla. :P
On a side note, if there are any comparisons to be made, they ought to be done with current SPACE TECHNOLOGY, not home technology:

What most people call Area 51 is just the US Aeronautical Map number for the air space above Groom Lake, the correct names for the Area 51 facility are the Nevada Test and Training Range and Groom Lake AFB, the area is a remote detachment of Edwards Air Force Base. Although the base has never been declared a secret base, all research and occurings in Area 51 are Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) and is restricted airspace. I to find this baffling! and have known of it's existences for years, one of my cousins was in the Air Force and was stationed there, he changed out the film packs on the RS (Reconnaissance Strategic) 71, President Johnson gave a speech about the aircraft in 1964 and the media reported the aircraft designation backwards to read, what we now call SR71! almost 50 years later and the media is still getting it backwards.

Никола Тесла ...

NO! NO! Area 51 is near the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. How do I know? I saw the sign on a fence while I was on a bus tour 10 years ago. And, I walked around the RS/SR71, and took photos.
OK, the Area 51 sign was put on a fence, just for us tourist, but, the plane was on exhibit at the US Space and Rocket Center.

If I recall correctly, I believe I saw a programme 10 years ago about a Japanese Mega-tower (in planning stage at the time) which would have built into it various features including an electro-magnetic lift system which would also go sideways. They would for a start be able to travel as high as is necessary (current tech is limited - that's why you have to get out of one lift and get in another if the building is very high) and take you to your room or area directly.
Given the recent troubles in Japan, these plans may have been set back.

Been thinking, since so many of the links here are dead, and since there are several other TREK threads with valid links, I've been thinking about closing this thread, since I cannot spend the time constantly keeping all the various links up to date, and keep bread on the table, perhaps it would be best to ask the mods to close this thread and just keep it as an archive!

Many of us come here not for links, but for the conversations and discussions that have been posted here. Many fun little tidbits and golden nuggets are shared that we wouldn't be able to find elsewhere. So, while many have expressed their feelings more eloquently than I: Williamtaylor1969, please do not close down this thread. It would leave many of us fans adrift and without a star to guide them.

I see that neither the original enterprise (TV), Original Klingon (TV) or original Romlan Bird of prey (TV), DS9 or any shuttle crafts listed in the 1st 30 odd issues, so wonder if they are going to be specials.
I hope they do a special of the JJprise.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but I was watching the TNG episode Sarek recently on Blu-ray, and I remembered that it took me a while to figure out which "Mozart" piece Sarek was emotionally moved to tears by. The interesting thing is that it wasn't Mozart at all, even though it was supposed to be a Mozart recital. The piece in question was actually Brahms sextet #1 in B Flat Major, Second Movement Allegro Ma Maderato. If anyone would like this piece in its entirety, I would be happy to share.

Yeah, I think it's mentioned on the TNG's Companion book. Also looked over Memory Alpha site and it's there as well: Sarek (episode) - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki (

Good catch, anyway. I could not tell Mozart from Brahms apart even if I wanted to.

I'd be interested on which JJPrise they'd do - the 2009 JJPrise or the one at the end of STID (which appears to be subtly different but we only ever see the back of it)

I believe almost all of the music of TOS has been released, along with all the movies, TV shows! so in other words not much, if any is left to be released!...which is why the links have stopped being posted, now it's just new members that are playing catchup! This forum has morphed into a meeting place for those of us that love Star Trek (the real Trek!!) and to make friends and talk about our lives (ups or downs) and to keep "The Great Bird of the Galaxy" Dream Alive! I remember the "Commodor" computer, hehehehehehe What a piece of SHIT that was, even when it was brand new!!!! Ed Mirecki, on the east coast, had a "Knightrider" car that he had built up, thanks to pieces from the original stunt car that he got from ME, and he ran all the dashboard displays off of an old Commodor, or Atari computer, that he placed in the trunk. Whenever the car would speed up, a sensor he attached to the speedometer, would cause all the displays to go from green to yellow, and into red! It was a very neat trick. Plus, he went to Universal, when they had KITT sitting out there, talking to people, and paid the voice actor a bunch of money to record different sayings for him, so he could sit in the car, and the car would actually talk to him, and his "guests"! What a freakin EGO this guy had, but it was really neat (up until the car had serious rust damage from all the salt from the east coast weather!)

Hehe. 'Twas indeed a pile. But never mind, William Shatner's selling it for less than $300. Looking back though, they were all useless, even the vaunted Apple Lisa. The Commodore 64 which came out a little later was a bit better than the Vic 20. Commodore's advantage was that they used the 6502 processor, whereas many other computers used the Z80. The advantage was that many operations took 2 clock cycles to complete on the 6502, whereas on the Z80 they took at least 4, but had a more extensive/complex instruction set. When the Apple Mac came out, it was supposed to be the best consumer computer on the market. The following year Commodore released the Amiga and wiped the floor with Steve Jobs' face. So much for monochrome computers and ripping off Xerox's ideas.

Personally, I'll never understand the logic in keeping something away from the public. In 25 years, who is going to care about stuff like that. Sure there will be a few, but for the most nobody will and that's tragic. I was really hoping for more in terms of extras with the TOS blu-rays and with the exception of Billy's videos it felt lacking. Absolutely love the new complete soundtrack box set, very disappointed with their TOS movies on blu-ray too.

Commodore 64 was my first computer, and I loved it! I had it from 1986 to 1996. One computer, and since I got a Windows PC in 1996, I'm on my 5th PC.
The FUN part was typing in the programs. I do not type, I hunt and peck. One program I wanted was an aquarium on my screen. After all my work, nothing!
The next month magazine after my work, said they left out some commas. After FIXING it, worked great, such FUN. One really nice thing, was my first use of a mouse and point and click in a program called GEOS, a Mac like program. It got me ready for Windows 95. Sometimes I miss the old C64, sometimes.

My first computer was an AQUARIUS. It was of course running on BASIC. I too bought those magazines and programmed my own games. Then I had a Spectrum 128. After that I jumped to an ATARI 500, but I purchased the upgrade for a whole megabyte of ram. Of course it suffered from the standard problem where it switched off after about 15 minutes. I remember I ordered a few discs for that with some Star Trek Vector graphics from the Motion picture. I can remember having the shuttle docking to the enterprise with Scotty and Kirk. I then purchased my first PC which was a 486 with Windows 3.1 and 2mb of ram and a 640mb hard drive. It came with two operating systems, either Windows 3.1 (which I used) or OS Warp. What ever happened to IBM's operating system LOL.

I bought the Vic20 first, hated it, then C64. Started with cassette drive, then 5 1/4, then 3 1/2 drives and RAM cartridge. I could have bought a Hard Drive for it.
I had Dot Matrix printer and Thermal ribbon printer.
I'm with you about Windows 8. If they don't fix it, I guess I will have to go to Linux.[COLOR="Silver"]
You may be glad to know that Commodore resurfaced a couple of years ago. You can get something called the Vic-slim which will run Linux. I think they also do something called the C64X which looks like the original 64 strangely enough.
I'd be interested in taking a look at the Vic-slim (it's essentially a pc in a keyboard and consumes very little power), but it doesn't look like it's available over here.

Aquarius. That's a first. I never knew anyone who had that one! The usual suspects were C64, BBC, ZX Spectrum, Dragon, and a bunch of others which were essentially clones of the former. 1985 was a good year. That also saw the release of the Atari ST; that was a nice machine. Not as beefed up as the Amiga in terms of graphics and sound hardware, but nice nonetheless. It too was streets ahead of the 1984 Apple Mac. At least Apple came back with a couple of cracking machines in the early 90s (pre- iMac era). The Amiga and Atari just seemed to die off, which was a bit of a shame.

I've been building computers since the first DOS PC, then XT, then 286, then 386...you get the point. I love computers. I can still remember telling my dad while using an Osborne portible Osborne_1 (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_1) that i will never learn these things, he laught and said "oh you will". It's funny too that my mother beat me to it by a few years. She learned on some type similar to a PC in the late 70's working at Olie's, i think that's how it's spelled. those were the key punch card days still. But she doesn't come close in the building computers department. "I just ride in 'em, I dunno what makes 'em work!" -Oddball, Kelly's Heroes

Win 7 will be here a long time.
From the C64 I went straight to a PC 486 (yeah, I kept the Commodore that long, hehe). Then netbooks. Quantum leaps :) (as Lawrence Krauss -I think- said, the phrase "quantum leap" make no sense but what the heck)
A few months after IBM came out with the AT286-8 pc I bought one! a whole 8 megahertz CPU, with 128 mb RAM and a whopping 5 MB HD, running IBM DOS 3.0!! wooohooo!! (I still have that one too! And when you start it up you can hear the arms inside the hard drive bang several times against the metal frame of the drive) Now I run a AMD Phenom II x4 3.4GHz, with 32 GB of RAM 64 bit win 7, ATI radeon HD 6670 (2 Gigs of DDR3) on two 1 Terabit HD's, one laptop and one Galaxy Tab 2 10.1... Boy have we come a long way from that 8 MHz CPU!!!
I will keep win 7 until I can no longer get any updates for it, maybe by then Microsquish will have a new CEO and a real desktop OS again! If not then I don't know what I'll do.

Windows 3.1 GOOD
Windows 95 BAD
Windows 98 Good

Windows XP GOOD
Windows VISTA BAD BAD BAD "are you sure I'm bad?" yes "Are you really sure I'm bad" YES

We can only hope that windows 9 is back to normal! after the dismal numbers for win 8 and win 8.1 and the reviews for it, and the failure of windows RT, I can differently say it sucks!
You would think a film studio would stop wasting millions on film franchise that loses more money then it makes! If I ran a studio you can believe I would read the script before I even dumped millions into it, ordered changes or just out right throw the writer out the front gate.

Well, you have to realize, my friend, that the studio heads just don't have the time, or temperment to read thru EVERY script that is considered, or even IN production! They have underlings to do that work! And, I have read scripts that I thought were horrible, only to see the finished production, which were GREAT!!! I have also read scripts that I thought would make a good movie, only to see, like the rest of the world, that it was a POS movie, right from the first frame. That is the main reason that I am NOT in a position to approve scripts for any studio, hehehehehehe :)
Most of the PTB at all of the studios, would be about as dumb as I am, about reading scripts and seeing potential in the production. Very few, and far between, actually get a GOOD script produced into a good film, but there are a couple of people who have that talent, and I AM NOT ONE OF THEM, hehehehhehehe :)

Hello, Scotty. No, that was the "Star Trek Bloopers" record that was released by "Harry & sons", who had also released the first record of "War of the Worlds" and "When worlds collide" back in the 1970's. Some person had found the original reel to reel recording in a dumpster at Paramount, and sold it to Harry Rosenberg for peanuts, and Harry printed up a run of 2,000 records, thinking that just the name "Star Trek" would sell tons of copies, but he got stuck with a whole warehouse of records (his garage was his warehouse, hehehehehe) and finally had to file BK. Of course, he was owed $80,000 from Doug Wright, who ran a Scifi, fantasy and horror convention every year in Los Angeles, and kept getting deeper and deeper in debt, and Harry would bail him out. Harry was a great guy, but he had two MAGGOT sons, that ran the record business into the ground after Harry died, and nobody knows what happened to all those records!
Just like with "Rod" Roddenberry. His mother had a TON of Trek stock when Lincoln failed, and a mountain of TOS film stock, that she was cutting up into clips and selling, but where is it today? nobody knows!
What I think that Gubbuts is talking about is the "Crescendo" TOS sound effects release, which was in record and cassette form on the first release, and then CDs later.

I know, but at lest he or she can hire people that can tell a stinker from a money maker!! I know most of it is a gamble, but hell! the head of the studio still has to report to the share holders for their actions. hmmmm I remember a friend I grow up with had gone to one of the conventions in the late 70's and he bought a cassette tape that had all the sound effects from TOS (you could faintly hear some dialog but they had tried to fade it out, I think it was on the right channel?) and he had loaned me the tape and I copied it, I still have it! I'll have to get a cassette tape converter and move it on my computer. I remember the bloopers! but not being sold on record and cassette tape! I saw it in 74 at the San Diego Convention and could only get a 16mm copy or nothing! I could not afford the copy at the time...oh well. I always wondered what happened to all those prints Majel had Gene make for her!! bet Rod has it stashed somewhere for a rainy day.
A person tries to help a friend out and all he gets is kicked in the nads! I've learned two things over the years...1) if you can't afford to loan out the money, Don't! and 2) if you going to loan money, you just have to write it off before you loan it out...I never expect it back.

(some where so drunk, you could not wake them up, so I had to use my taser (the first ones were a hand held unit, you had to touch the person with) and zap them in the neck to wake them up....lol boy let me tell you! you get 50,000 volts (No amps...1 amp can kill) zapped into you and I can guarantee you, you will wake up and set up very fast...sometimes even sober-up real fast lol

As for bad scripts or stories, I heard on NPR about the (bad) crop of films coming out this fall. One film, is about the male members of a family that can travel in time, with just their bodies. It just happens. Now that is a stinker. But, if they slapped a sticker across the foreheads that read...T.A.R.D.I.S., THEN, MAYBE, it would be a little above stinker...I don't think so!

Yeah, look at John Carter. he was written about in 1912. Then you have the Time Machine which was in 1895, How many films/TV programmes and other books have their premise set by these stories.
I've lost count how many films and tv shows use the Scrooge / A Christmas Carol premise. A few years ago I saw "A Carol Christmas" which featured William Shatner as one of the Ghosts - not bad for a laugh. I also rather fancy the one with Patrick Stewart and Richard E. Grant.

You got my attention!!! if it is the one I am thinking of, I have a cassette tape copy from the record? this was a real to real tape found in one of Paramount dumpsters, back in the late 1970's and the guy made a 33 LP record of it and started selling copies of it at the conventions. If this is it let me know.

It is indeed just the Crescendo TOS sound FX album as William taylor correctly surmised. No biggie, nothing terribly new, I just came across it in my old CD collection and thought others might like to hear it.

News on Trek score releases from LLLR:
(me):
He's said two a year, with Enterprise before Voyager, so we should be getting Enterprise before the end of the year.
Enterprise will not be ready. Sorry.
Feb 2014, most likely
MV
And (relevent part bolded):
On the subject of another X Files Box:
"A vol 3 is most likely unless sales of Volume 2 are terrible."
When someone asked if sales were poor for LLL's TNG Set:
"No, sales were great on Vol 1. A Vol 2 is in the planning stages for 2014."
One Trek at a time, guys. One trek at a time."
And when someone asked about a complete Fight The Future score release:
"You never know."

Thanks, William! I always enjoy seeing Matt's designs.
On the TOS DVD special features, they had a slide show of Matt's designs and the scene where it was realized.
I captured them from the DVD, and the Microsoft XP Plus used My Pictures folder to show a screensaver of the grabs.
Really nice to see them on my PC.

Windows 3.1 GOOD
Windows 95 BAD
Windows 98 Good
Windows Millenium BAD...very very BAD
Windows XP GOOD
Windows VISTA BAD BAD BAD "are you sure I'm bad?" yes "Are you really sure I'm bad" YES
Windows 7 GOOD
Windows 8 BAD
Never used 3.1, always had problems with 95, 98, 2000 & Me. XP was great. NEVER had problems with Vista, in fact I have been using it for well over five years. Skipped 7. Using 8 on my new system, and I'm in love with it. Guess this is all a matter of opinion, eh.

Best = Windows 7
Worst= VISTA

Best = Windows 7 = Simple with good Driver support, most Stable So Far.
Worst= Windows 95 = Simple (Too), bad Driver support, Plug n Play? not really, come on!. Had to manually load drivers despite plug n play claims.
thoughts
If you're going to make an Operating System based on features advertised, those features should be there, in whole, working, in the beginning.
The past 20 years have been a OS transformation period to achieve a goal, and 7 is it (not saying it's the greatest thing ever acheived). 8 is for
the next set of features of touch, that frankly i don't need on my system. Features from 7 were removed in favor of other formats that are not
suited for what i do. I do a lot of video and music and i do not need touch screen for that. So as i see it we have two markets open now for the
future of computing information, one for editing systems and one for touch display data access. Microsoft may if they're smart continue keeping
7 in an updated and competitive state or provide something similar, while they develop 8 for the Tough Crowd.
I would have to agree with Pearlcorderman except i don't think 8 is bad as much as it's for another group with different needs. But the other in
between OS's were in need of just being finished with better driver support before they were released. I get the marketing concept of get it out
there and we'll get money coming in and finish developing, updating whatever, but with an operating system? It should work when released,
not pissing people off just to get up and running.

OK, so lets see what people like. What's your favorite and worst operating system. For starters I am going for:
Best = Windows 7
Worst= VISTA
1: Windows 3.0 & 3.1 were okay, relied on DOS to work, and you had to shell out (if you don't know what that is your to young and need to google it) to DOS to run a game or another program.
2: Windows 95 was just an upgrade from win 3.1, just a new GUI, still relied on DOS to work right and was a royal pain to work on (forget trying to use it in a network environment)
3: Windows 98 was junk! Windows 98SE on the other hand, finely had plug'n play! and it worked right, still relied to much on DOS but it worked nicely in a network! it just got better with Windows 98 C,D and E versions.
4: Windows XP was great!!! it just worked.
5: Windows vista is just plain CRAP! Microsoft never told people that you needed a high end graphic card to get it to run right and a boat load of RAM (2 Gig's plus), programs ran like a tod and because of the new GUI it just gummed everything up! Microsoft now began to hide normal settings from user's, and I spent weeks sorting all that crap out for user's. The new network protocols were slow!! way to slow and timed out a lot! if you used windows server 2000 or 2003 and had a printer jam or a printer that ran out of paper, the whole print queue would stop and none of your users could print! if you were real lucky you could add paper or un-jam it and everything would start back up, if not then you had a dump the print queue and everyone (imagine 200 users and all of a sudden they all lost what they were printing) was pissed off, wanting your head on a spike.
6: Windows 7 is the best OS I have ever worked on! everything worked right!!! Microsoft still hide options from us users, but was easy to fix, I guess they thought we were to stupid to want all the options opened up...After working with and building computers for 35 years I do have to say 7 is one of the easiest OS's to fix! they still have not fixed the DLL problem (as in multi-copy's of the same DLL), sleep mode, wake up problem! but what the hell! those are small problems.
7: Windows 8! is fine for touch systems (tablets) but not for desk top systems! they completely redesigned the GUI and now have a bunch of box's on your screen, all moving and needing constant connection to the internet! that's way to much contact for my taste! you can only imagine why a persons battery does not last long on a windows phone or tablet! If you work with music files or video files windows 8 becomes a royal pain in the ass! and as Spectre said just shutting down 8 is a few extra steps. I don't know what games are like in 8 but I can only imagine it is a nightmare! Now if Microsoft designed windows 9 to be a upgraded version of windows 7 (with the start button, and launch bar) and ran like 7 then I might go to 9, but if not I'll stick with 7 until it is dead. Yes I know windows 8 is supposed to be an upgrade to 7! well it's not!!

The "Live Tiles" as they are called, can be turned off, or can be unpinned or completely uninstalled from the Start screen. As for a few extra steps to shut down? It's not that much harder... you may have to actually click ONE more thing, if that. Although, the fact that it's in a different location might be confusing at first.
I will agree that Windows 8 would be much easier to use with a touchscreen (on a portable device or a desktop all-in-one system.)

There is no advantage. 8 is still the Windows 7 OS, just with the lame tile interface for all those who can't live without social media. There are many 3rd party plugins you can download that will boot your computer into the usual 7 desktop and operate as normal. It even shuts down the usual 7 way. And with just a click you can go back to lame 8 if you want.

As I understand it, those that have windows 8 can down grade to windows 7! but only if you have windows 8 Pro, then you can down grade to windows 7 Pro. but if you are using plain Windows 8 you'll need to buy and install a Windows 7 key. That's not a cheap option but Microsoft doesn't offer downgrade rights with the consumer version of Windows 8. How ever you cut it, Microsoft has you by the short hairs and they will pull!!

The real down side to this removable monitor systems, is the fact that the unit has a SSD hard drive! SSD stands for Solid State Drive, which is NAND-based flash memory, which retains data without power, and no moving parts, like a standard Hard Drive. Sounds great but after you setup windows RT (which is a mobile OS) the Surface Pro: a 64GB unit, you will lose more then half your drive space! and at $900.00 for that unit and if you want to go higher, which is 128GB tablet will be $1000! holy Crap On A Stick!!! I'm not a big fan of Windows 8 and I regret upgrading my desktop and laptop. I bought a $5 program called Start8 that adds the Windows 7 style start button and menu back and it also boots to the desktop. This has helped tremendously, I literally haven't seen that stupid tile start screen in months. Trying to use those tiles at work was a PITA, it took more steps to do everything. It may be great on tablets but it sucks on a desktop.
MS has junked up the 360 interface in the same way, it now takes more clicks to do everything, not to mention the ads, ads, ads.

Fine on all your points except Windows 95. And I've noticed some other dissenters on that issue, so I'll offer my praise to add some balance. If you recall Windows 3.0, you will remember how slow it was to boot. Basically, and this is on a top-of-the-line 486, you would switch on and go make a cup of tea. When you came back after five minutes, you would be lucky if it had finished booting. Windows 3.1 was a lot snappier and neater. However, both were insufficient or rather came up short when compared to the Mac OS, Amiga OS 2.0 and Sun Microsystems O/S. The File Manager was horrendous, and this was what held back Microsoft for years. They really were that stupid and hated back then - more so than of late. The file management bit is the key to any decent desktop. This is why people are getting turned off by Windows 8 - they don't need a load of crap between them and the desktop or more precisely, what they want to do. Enter Windows 95. This was a straight forward set up with a proper file manager - newly branded as Explorer. It was a 'what see is what you get' type of deal with options to hide system files. This was a liberating feature which established Microsoft as a viable O/S provider. It was at this time that CPUs went 32-bit, and Win95 had to please a great deal of people. It had to handle old 16-bit software and drivers as well as new 32-bit ones. The Release 2 tried to handle the USB, but wasn't entirely successful and that's what brought about Windows 98 - reliable USB handling ability. True, it was founded on DOS, but if you wanted to handle large files, you had the option of going NT, which appeared to look similar to Win95, but used NTFS. Now that was a bastard in terms of getting the drivers sorted out. Long story short, Windows 2000 realised its full potential with SP2 onwards and was great - XP wasn't much different when you looked at them closely.

I started with a TRS 80 series III computer with 48K memory and a black and white monitor. They used TRS computers on the bridge of the enterprise for the first couple of movies. Chasing dots and dashes on the computer screen for games. Great OS, simple to learn and program :)

I remember being lucky enough to have 2000 on my computer when I worked at OLYMPUS. I loved that system, it was so stable.

I hate to go off topic, to talk Star Trek, as you well know.;)
I got the 2014 Ships of the Line Calendar today. As usual some great art, and surprises. One surprise, that is not good, is that the Star Trek actor's Birthdays are not mentioned as in past years. Minor issue, but, a surprise. My favorite art, is a new Starfleet Museum with the wessels called Enterprise.

relied on DOS to work, and you had to shell out (if you don't know what that is your to young and need to google it) to DOS to run a game or another program.
That was just one of the reasons I switched to DR. DOS (later, NovellDOS): True preemptive multitasking, something Microsoft said couldn't be done in DOS...so why don't you spend $100's "upgrading" to Windows so you can have what we refuse to give you??
Oh, and how about their "Steve Ballmer" style marketing for Windows 3.1, where they boasted that they had eliminated General Protection Faults and promised you'd never see one again...They renamed them to Unrecoverable Application Errors. A pile of shit by any other name...

Searching for TAS stuff, I found this animated version of TOS intro, pretty cool.

Although there are some things I'd change about it if I were involved, you're right. It's pretty cool.

A blast from the past!! Dr DOS!!!! damn best DOS I ever used! I had almost forgotten about it....sham on me! (hanging head in sham) Thank you for bring it back to this old mans memory. A few years ago I...well, I dumped all my old OS's and DOS disks, it broke my heart but it had to be done, I was running out of space and had not touched them in years. I still have a multi CD of win 3.0 to 98SE, I saved that because a friend of mine keeps buying old computers (486 and 586 cpus) and selling them to others that can't afford a modern system and he calls me for tech support or if his copy of windows & DOS disks go south on him. He is a well intended man but I see no reason to keep useless junk around and even selling it to others, which in turn just causes more problems then its worth...and every time I tell him to just stop buying old outdated junk, he just goes on with whatever problem he is having and wants me to solve it! for some reason he continues to install DOS, then installs windows 98 or windows 98SE and I keep telling him that he dose not need to install DOS before he installs windows!!! just as long as the BIOS has boot from CD you don't need DOS, it's already built into windows!! knothead.....one of these days I'll change my phone number and leave him high and dry! :)
Steve Ballmer has always been a lying, windbag POS! nothing has changed with him and thank God he is leaving Microsquesh! One can only hope that they get someone that well listen to their customers and the NT community!

Reminds me, I keep a P4 3ghz Socket 478 on a modernish MB with PCI-E 16x1 and descent DDR2 memory, modern IO's, to run old programs and some newer ones too. It'll even run Windows 7 and DirectX 11. hehe

ScottYou left out buffoon. Yea, I've never been a big fan of Microsloth, especially after they murdered OS/2 and intentionally coded Windows 3.11 to refuse to install on top of DR-DOS for no reason other than it wasn't MS-DOS and other illegal activities (per processor licensing requiring OEM's to pay for an MS-DOS license even on computers that came with CP/M or another OS instead of MS-DOS) but even so, Ballmer was more than a plague on MicroSnot, he was an embarrassment to the entire industry. The damage he has done to MicroSchlock is so extensive they may never recover. Not that I care any more: After 20+ years in the IBM-compatible world (what would be the linguistic ancestor to the term "Windows Computer" for those of you who think 30 years of age is ancient) I finally moved to the Mac world after years of Mac envy. I finally realized that the per-year cost cheap PC's were as much as -- or more than -- a Mac. And you know what they say...once you go Mac, you never go back...:naughty:

Reminds me, I keep a P4 3ghz Socket 478 on a modernish MB with PCI-E 16x1 and descent DDR2 memory, modern IO's, to run old programs and some newer ones too. It'll even run Windows 7 and DirectX 11. hehe
I had the same P4/3/478. That was the last of the decent and properly priced Intels. Damn fine set up which holds up well regardless of a poor benchmark. The only downside (in this age of HD video) is the lack of HD video crunching ability - it'll work, but given how programmers write their codecs, it's slow.

You left out buffoon.
There a few drawback's for a Mac, it's inability to upgrade any of it's hardware and lack of major software programs and games....other then that it is a great system. Once upon a time Apple had okayed a company to make cloned copes of Mac's, (which is what IBM did with it's AT motherboard & chip set and we are still using them today, just newer configurations and newer chip sets) they sold like hotcakes!! but Apple pulled there licenses and shut them down! (the stupidest thing Apple ever did!!) now if you need a replacement part for your Mac you can only get it from Apple! That is what is holding Apple back from being on equal ground with the PC market. As long as Apple continues to hold all the cards, Mac's will continue being a step cousin of the PC and never being a major player for home PC's. A good example is Apples iphone, you pay $400.00 to 500.00 dollars for a iphone and 6 months later a new version comes out and you can't run the new ios in a old iphone, so your only option is to keep what you got and get left behind or you fork over another $500 or 600 hundred dollars or more for a new iphone! Now the new iphone 6 has what? 3 different versions? I guess Apple thinks everyone is made out of money. My oldest son had a iphone 3, and he wanted all the new things the newer iphone 5 had, but he could not afford to go to a newer iphone (at the time) so as soon as we could afford it, he dumped his iphone 3 and got the iphone 5 and was like a kid in a candy store! until the iphone 6 came out! now he is salivating over the iphone 6. iphone, ipad or ipod have no micoSD slot! no way to add additional storage space! that is the biggest turn off for me, I'll stay with my Motorola Atrix HD phone running Android v4.0.4 (Ice Cream Sandwich) with my 32 Gig microSD card over going to a new iphone every 6 months!
Thirty years old is still a kid in my book! My oldest son is the same age as you!! hehehehe so you see I'm old enough to be your dad!! lol William on the other hand is a day older then dust! LOL j/k William ;)

Yeah! considering CD Drives cost upwards of $200.00 back then! but anyone can buy a CD drive for next to nothing today! which is what he does or just buys a bunch of old CD drives from some school or company going out of business, then puts them in his computer he well sell.
I have used DOSBox for a few years now on my windows 7 64 bit pc and it works great! mostly running older games (GOG.com) I used to dual boot my pc but got tired of having to switch to a different OS to help someone out, so I just built another computer using windows 7 32 bit and use virtualbox to run 95, 98, 98SE, 2000 and XP. Thanks for the tips theone!

The only Apple I would buy, is the red fruit.
I prefer to do my web surfing in front of a BIG screen at home.
The cell phone I used, is from Tracfone. Features don't matter, just sending and receiving calls, when on the road. And, at $20 every 3 months, very affordable.

Beta VCRs were made by other companies. My first was from Sears, my second was Sanyo. I too, liked Beta. My first movie I bought was Silent Running, for $50. The Sears Beta VCR, I paid $535 in 1981. I still have some Beta tapes I recorded on, and play them on a flea market bought Sony Betamax.

Silent Running. What a great film. Bruce Dern as a good guy for a change. It wasn't until S-VHS came out that quality was comparable, but that never took off on the off-the-shelf vhs tapes. Frankly, I'm glad to see the back of analogue tapes. All those drop outs, dotted lines, fluctuating and bleeding colours, the black art of tracking, and the shear size of a modest collection of cassettes... aaaarggh!

No, what killed Beta was the preference of vhs from the adult video buyers. That is not my theory, it's been said many times by people in the tech industry. My first Beta machine was a Sony Betamax player that had a top loading mechanism. The Beta format was superior to vhs in that it had more lines of resolution. I never actually bought any commercial movies on Beta because I was too cheap so I recorded them off of cable. The last Beta machine I owned was a Sanyo that died on me in 1994 by which time I had amassed over 3,000 vhs titles (mostly recorded). Today I still have around 6,000 vhs movies that I am slowly replacing with either commercial dvd's, blu-ray's or recorded movies to dvd-rom from satellite. I estimate that I have around 1,350 movies on dvd-rom and about 2,330 commercial dvd's. :D

I'm talking mid thru late 70's. By the 80's the damage was done, and VHS was the going standard. Sony Beta blew it by waiting too long to compete, VHS prices were ahead of Beta. I'm just glad too that we've gone digital, i don't miss video tape at all. Having a collection of book size tapes in cases plus taped TV shows could take up alot of space. But it was cool while it lasted. Go Beta!

ScottA few point of disagreement:
First, I'm not sure where you got the idea I was 30 year old. I'm old enough to be your sons dad. In fact, I've got a daughter the same age as your son, if he is thirty.
Second, based on my 20+ years of experience with IBM-compats (including time spent doing sales, service and building) the "drawbacks" you describe for Macs aren't really as significant as they can be made to seem. The problem here (and please don't take this as an insult: it isn't intended to be that at all) is that you are thinking like a geek. Nothing wrong with that; I'm a geek, too, and my first inclination when thinking about things technical is to use my geek mentality. However, after years (decades really) of dealing with non-geeks in the computer world I've learned to take my geek brain out of gear and engage my consumer brain and think of things as a typical consumer does. Notice the caveat there: "typical consumer." Perhaps you and your son are not typical consumers. They exist and for them Apple products may not be the right choice for them. But I think all the Windows and Android fanboys do their friends, family and acquaintances a grave disservice by trying to superimpose their geek reasoning onto those for whom geekdom is not of value — or worse, a handicap. So, lets put on our "consumer" caps for just a short while and consider your points from the point of view of the typical consumer.
There a few drawback's for a Mac, it's inability to upgrade any of it's hardware...
Sounds serious, until you consider how many people on the 'PC' side actually do upgrade any hardware. Yes, there is a very small percentage that do: those who love building and maintaining the hardware because they enjoy it, those who have specialized systems for specific use requirement that can not be satisfied with "off the shelf" boxes -- even the 'customized' boxes that one can get from the likes of Dell and such. Then there is another group -- still small but larger than the first -- who talk about how great it is to be able to upgrade their system or do their own repair work but never actually do it. Yes, they may have bought a 'custom-built' system or selected a ready-made box based on it's ability to be easily upgraded or serviced but they didn't buy their box because they actually do it, mostly just for 'bragging rights'. This second group is not actually related to the first group as one might think but are in fact a subsection of the third group: those who simply buy a box, then when the time comes to 'fix' it, they simply replace it.
Actually, although this last group is the least technically savvy of the two (group 2 being a subset of group 3, therefore I count them as part of group 3 and not a separate group in this context) they are inadvertently the most economically savvy. The reason I say that is that over the last decade or so the economics have reversed themselves to where, by the time a computer is in need of service, it is no longer cost effective to repair it when you consider the slim difference in cost between repairing a 2-4 year old computer which is now outdated versus spending a bit more to get a new, updated, more sophisticated (hardware-wise, at least) computer. Additionally, most components in even custom built systems are not well suited to upgrading as it was back in the day. It used to be that you typically had 5-6 expansion slots on you motherboard (at least half of which were open), and your system was in either a large desktop case or a mid- or large-tower case with plenty of room for expansion and to work. Not so any longer. Now, motherboards typically have only 1-2 slots total, assuming any of them are free.
It used to be that if/when there was a component built on the motherboard (such as a hard drive controller) that failed or was no longer performing to ones expectations, it was easily disabled allowing you to install a card to replace it. Now days, it isn't necessarily so easy. Yes, you can go into your BIOS and disable it, but I can tell you from experience that "disabled" doesn't always mean disabled and I've seen many a situation where a "disabled" onboard subsystem (such as the aforementioned hard drive controller, or video card, or sound card) created havoc trying to install a separate replacement component because even though it was functionally disabled it was still being recognized as being installed by the system and created conflicts.
Then there is the "domino" effect where an upgrade to one component reveals a weakness elsewhere in the system, thus prompting or necessitating an unanticipated upgrade to another component or set of components. Suddenly you can find yourself spending more to upgrade an outdated system that will still be outdated in other respects than it would have cost just to replace the whole thing.
...lack of major software programs and games....
That's not so much on the case on the productivity side (lets face it: even with WinBlows you've got Microsoft Office, OpenOffice and... well, on the Mac side you've got Microsoft Office, OpenOffice and... ) although you might have a point on the game side if it weren't for the fact that according to PC Magazine (if I remember correctly) declared that the best computer with which to run Window 7 was a Mac. Yes, I have Windows on my Mac. I can either boot straight to it or I can run it virtually inside the Mac OS. None of these options is difficult, although the boot to Windows option is generally simpler than the virtual Windows option and this can be configured to simply start the machine with a boot menu option to select Mac or Windows. This has been the case for quite some time. So that 'benefit' of the PC over Mac doesn't really exist.
Once upon a time Apple had okayed a company to make cloned copes of Mac's, (which is what IBM did with it's AT motherboard & chip set and we are still using them today, just newer configurations and newer chip sets) they sold like hotcakes!! but Apple pulled there licenses and shut them down!
There's more to that story, though. The problem was incompatibility, the same problem that was a major issue on the PC side for years (actually, pushing into decades) and is still a bit of a problem from time to time on the PC side. For example, as recently as the late 1990's, early 2000's you could not install a SoundBlaster-compatible card in a CowBox (that's a Gateway, for the uninitiated). It wouldn't work even though by that time SoundBlaster compatibility (and well before) was a de facto industry standard for sound and sound cards. You had to install the genuine SoundBlaster or nothing. The problem in Apples case was that it was not the clone manufactures taking the brunt of the damage for incompatibility, it was Apple. The situation needed to be addressed and it needed to be address quickly otherwise the damage would have been devastating. The options were either require that clones be certified by Apple -- which would have eliminated the financial benefit to consumers of buying a clone -- or kill the program all together: Letting the situation 'sort itself out' wasn't an option for anyone at that point.
...you pay $400.00 to 500.00 dollars for a iphone and 6 months later a new version comes out and you can't run the new ios in a old iphone, so your only option is to keep what you got and get left behind or you fork over another $500 or 600 hundred dollars or more for a new iphone...
Whoaaa. I don't know where you got that information but it is flat out WRONG. Ignoring the fact that I don't know of anyone who pays that much out of pocket for any phone (unless they by one which is carrier unlocked, in which case you are looking at that kind of money regardless if it is an iPhone or an Android model) but I have used iPhones for several years and never had an issue upgrading the operating system, unlike Androids and Blackberrys. Actually, Apple tipped the equation into the consumers favor with the iPhone. Most Android and Blackberry phones that are in use are using an outdated version of the operating system. In some cases, the phone came with an outdated version but in most cases the carrier prevents the user from upgrading to the latest version. For years most carriers have locked up the phone operating system upgrades so that you can only get them from the carrier and they have no interest in allowing users to upgrade the operating system. Over the last few years -- since Apple introduced the iPhone which took the carrier out of the OS upgrade equation (isn't that a 'coincidence') -- hardware manufacturers have started wrestling control over the OS upgrades from the carriers, but they have been no more eager to make those upgrades available to the consumer than the carriers. Yes, at some point ALL devices which use a software OS will no longer be supported, including Android devices. This supposed downside to Apple doesn't really exist except in the mind. And let's not even discuss the fragmentation of the Android system from the developers point of view...
Now the new iphone 6 has what? 3 different versions? As opposed to the 50+ versions of an Android phone???? Go count 'em, all the different models of Android phone from all the different manufacturers. I find it "interesting" that very often the people who on the one hand say Apple doesn't provide enough choices because they only have one or two models then complain about Apple have "too many" choices when they offer 3 or 4 models, while at the same time ignoring the fact that they are one company with 3 or 4 (or 5 or 6) models competing against a whole slew of companies that collectively have more models than some Hollywood actresses have had plastic surgeries.
iphone, ipad or ipod have no micoSD slot! no way to add additional storage space!
The presence of a MicroSD slot on a portable device is probably not as common as you believe. And even where it is available, most people don't use it beyond sticking a card in and never pulling it out. When they want to sync or move data to their computer they do it via cable, wi-fi or the cloud. So, in the cases of a device which does have a MicroSD slot, how is having a device with a MicroSD slot which has a card installed and never removed different than having an equal amount of fixed memory on the device and no slot? Upgrading really isn't necessary if you simply do file maintenance and the cloud -- and your computer via the cloud, wi-fi or hardware -- is your additional storage space.

Suddenly you can find yourself spending more to upgrade an outdated system that will still be outdated in other respects than it would have cost just to replace the whole thing...

There's enough of us group 1's to help or get payed upgrading PC's for group 2 and 3. I wouldn't trade anything to be able to have control over My investment. I look at it, that if a component goes out then i replace it. You woud'nt build something with the attitude that, well their ignorant, so let's build something so no one can fix it so they'll have to replace it. If cars were that way people would be pissed and not buy it. And if they were forced to then someone would have a market to fill. My computer has litterly morphed through the last 25 years as a result of upgrading, i've never baught a system. The idea that Microcrap put out in the mid 90's that PC's would vanish because all in one system consoles would take over as a total entertainment and computer system and couldn't be upgradable made me laugh out loud. Computers that burn out like chips going bad are just plain made sub-standard, i still have system components from 15 - 20 years ago that still work. i could build whole systems together from these. There's no reason a system shouldn't last 10 years min or forever if properly maintained. If the limit for computing power to present day apps is 4 years, are you saying Apple users are buying new computers every 3 or 4 years? If they're cheap enough that's fine, but they shouldn't make components so cheap they break down. If there's a need it'll exist and if not it won't. sorry if i'm rambling.

BTW all of those figures are mainstream movies not adult.

>LDMartin1959 You've pointed out some interesting observations there, but there are plenty of smart phones that cost 500 GBP and more here in the UK - that's Pounds Sterling. The cheapos cost around 100 GBP.
Macs and PCs share(d) a lot of common technology like PCI, PCMCIA, USB, Firewire and recently HDMI, uniting rather than separating the approaches. The thing that separates them nowadays is the O/S as you point out. However, I do believe they source off-the-shelf components more than they would care to admit. Given their small market share, Apple has amassed a huge amount of cash on the backs of over-worked driven-to-suicide Chinese workers. I will have nothing to do with Apple.
There are plenty of PC providers like Dell and Gateway that should be steered clear of. Although being a hypocrite I should say my first pc was a Dell laptop with Win95. However, as it was made in Japan by Seiko it wasn't going to screw up from day one. Incidentally, there was no Mac at that time to compete with it - some of theirs came with b&w screens as I recall. In fact what was it with Apple which has a colourful apple logo, and even had that 1984 anti-grey ad, and then stuck in a monochrome screen(?) - mental. Sony is another good example of proprietariness. The software that comes with their machines will not install on non-Sony computers. And their MagicGate memory sticks were more of a bother - it was basically early DRM style protection.

I'm glad you know what you want and what is appropriate for you. But as I think I indicated -- and perhaps I wasn't clear -- what I was saying wasn't intended to apply to what I called group 1. Their needs and requirements are not typical of the average computer buyer, which is my point: too often the geeks amoung us guide the average computer buyer into buying something that isn't necessarily appropriate for them. It's great for the geek directing them, but not for the person who is doing the actual buying. The fact that there are folks who are capable of fixing a problem for the group 2/3 people is great. But all too often the geek 1 who directs the average buyer in their purchase is no longer available when there is an issue. And in fact cars are built somewhat in that manner which is why so many people hire expensive mechanics to fix them. But the difference there is that the cost of repair is generally but a fraction of the cost to replace. Not so in the computer world where tech fees routinely start at $70 an hour. Plus parts. It doesn't take very long or very many issues to make it more expensive to repair than replace, which is a point that too many people neglect to take into consideration. And I agree that there is no reason a decent system shouldn't last many years -- and no, I am not saying that Apple users are buying new computers every 3 or 4 years. I am saying the average Windows computer purchaser is because the Windows computer purchaser is buying low end boxes from the likes of Dell, Acer, et al. A quality system on the PC side won't need replaced nearly as often as the inexpensive units. But when you start talking that kind of money to get a quality system such as that, you are in the Apple price arena which makes Apples a viable consideration in that mix. And based on my experience, after having been firmly in the PC camp for a very long time (although I hate Microsoft, their business practices and most of their products and have issues with their buying -- or stealing -- products, then taking the credit for them as if they created them) I believe that Apple products offer benefits over Windows boxes for many average computer users -- or at the very least are worthy of equal consideration -- but the geeks amoung us (and I include myself in that) have done many a disservice by intentionally directing people away from Apple products for reasons which are valid for us but not necessarily valid for others.

I bought my first Beta recorder in 1982 after researching which format had the best picture, I still have a box full of beta tapes in the basement, Replaced it with a VHS recorder around 1989, I still have 2 boxes full of VHS tapes in my basement. Replaced it with a DVD player which I replaced with a Blue-ray played 2 years ago. At least I can still play my DVDs on the Blue-ray or I would have 3 boxes full of DVDs in the basement :) I call that a major improvement.

I repair computers and lap-tops as a hobby. Your are right when you say it is usually too expensive to have them repaired compare to cost of replacing them . I only charge for the cost of parts if I have to buy them. Many times I have spare parts laying around my work bench taken from broken computers. Most people buy cheap low end computers. Most of the ones I repair are around 6 years old. With e-bay I can order most parts fairly cheaply. I took a few computer classes but mostly learned to fix computers by searching the internet. I found that it isn't too expensive to take a cheap computer and up-grade it to a decent computer. I usually buy business grade computers instead of personal computers. I bought my 1st computer back in 1982 a TRS 80 series III. I currently have four desk tops and a lap top connected to my home network. Does this make me a level 1 (geek)? or am I considered a level 2 or 3 user? :)

On going from video tape to DVD...
We got our first VCR around 1979 ... a $1000 VHS unit that was a rental return (used) unit, for $400. VHS units were cheaper; VHS recorded for up to 6 hours (at that time before 8-hour tapes). So VHS was the way to go. I wasn't an elite (my opinion) who worried about comparing resolution-screen size or some such, it was the miracle of the thing AT ALL that was enough for me.
Little obsessive guy, me, ended up with several hundred videotapes, most of them being two or three movies (per tape) dubbed from TV or other videos. Oh the nerdy joy of having TWO VCRs so you could dub your own!
And as time passed by and DVD came out, buying a DVD recorder became the way to go. Things like the great 1941 Ray Milland film The Uninvited -- I had it on disc long before commercial DVD, never mind that it was a grainy dub. I rewatched it again with newly freshened eyes. And the original Clash of the Titans, and the original miniseries Salem's Lot, and so on. Of course eventually I bought what I could in commercial DVD.
It's kind of funny that all these years later, about the only things I haven't dubbed from video to DVD are my home videos of the kids as little ones! Lazy me!
STAR TREK connection: I sold my first article to the paperback series THE BEST OF TREK about the differences between original release and home video and as-shown-on-TV releases of ST:TMP and the next two films. Most of that article was possible through having two VCRs hooked up to a splitter and switching back and forth as they each played differing versions of the same movie. And I later dubbed this video onto DVD, meaning I still have a copy of ST:TMP as originally broadcast on ABC (pan-and-scan, baby!) in 1983. And shot-for-shot it is NOT the same as the other versions because there were cuts to left or right of the screen, "push-ins," and the like.
It's amazing how much time you have to play with toys when you have less complications (kids and grandkids) to take up your time on more worthy activities!
Now the rest of you, get out there and talk about STAR TREK and your early video memories!
PS some time I will rant about the Paramount-tampered versions of "City on the Edge of Forever"!

Regarding the issue of the Enterprise D in model form as part of a series, some may have noticed an obvious error.
I noticed that the name Enterprise is missing from the "neck" connecting primary to secondary hulls. I only noticed that because I saw it for the first time when watching the blu-rays.

One format of video recording that was not mentioned, VCD. I bought a VCD recorder that had to use blank CDs designed for only Music. I transferred a lot of my Beta and VHS to CDs, just to save them. Now any video release to commercial DVD, I just then throw away the tapes. Unless, they have special meaning to me.
As for the 1701 D model, I'm not surprised. AMT Models, first, and other model companies that followed, have NEVER released an accurate Star Trek model. The closest was the AMT TOS Klingon Battle Cruiser, but, still not right.

VCD recorder? That one passed me by. I always thought it was the first digital video disc format (laserdiscs video was analogue - bizarrely) which was used mainly to peddle music videos, but that it was a read-only job. VCD was followed by CD-i a few years later - I remember watching ST6 in a Virgin Megastore in 1992 - clearly no match for the cinema experience I had earlier that year.

Pretty much! Personally I love Betamax, far Superior to VHS in every way. Betamax is still used in Japan and some news stations here is the USA (those that don't use or have a Microwave link setup), but other then that it is a dead medium.

$70.00 dollars an hour! is far cheaper then what a certified mechanic makes! my youngest brother has been a mechanic for 30 years and makes $300.00 an hour today, plus parts and you get what you pay for too. I do the same as Max does, I just charge for the parts. I don't steer my customers to any system just because it cost more, then say a custom built system, personally I recommend a custom built system over a proprietary computer i.e. HP, Acer et el., I always ask my customers what they plan to use this computer for! if it's just doing basic things (Email, searching the net) then I always guide them to a no frills computer (not some souped up i7, 3 or 4 thousand dollar monster) if on the other hand a customer wants a gaming rig then we are talking several thousand dollars (those are few) but you can still build a modest gaming rig for 700.00 to $800.00 bucks. Proprietary systems I have found are almost always under powered for what type of OS is installed! (along with a ton of crapware) I've seen HP sell an AMD Sempron with 2 Gig RAM with Vista per-installed! and of course it has built-in video (with shared RAM) and people wonder why there computer runs like a snail! most of the people I have dealt with, want to throw there HP, Gateway or Acer out the window! that is a quality system? that's what I call junk and a rip off. There is such a thing called RMA! and I've had very little problems with returning bad components! My last personal built computer lasted me 5 years, with out a problem and is still running.
The only thing that has saved Apple ass is there facing the fact the Motorola CPU's are limited and had reached the end of there usefulness! then they switched to Intel CPU's, if Apple continued to use Motorola CPU's they would have ended up on the ash heap of history! I to can not stand Microsoft business practices either! alone with Apples as well, but when you have 86 percent of the worlds market share and apple has only 7.26%, Apple is not doing something right. The last time I checked iphone sells were down, there number 2 with Android being number 1 (so far anyway) but I digress.... Apple makes good computers that's why they are used for CGI,music recording and video editing, because that is what they are good at, sure there is not as much virus or malware written for apple but their out there! To buy software you can go into almost any major store and get any program for a windows computer, with Apple it is there store only! I have never liked being locked into any computer! but at lest with a windows based computer I can tell my customers (if they can't afford it) use open software (as you said Open Office) the main thing is PC's will run any software designed for it, sure you have problems but they are fixable! Apple on the other hand, you have to wait months if ever for Apple to fix there problems, most of the time you have to wait for a newer version. I have a ipod touch 4th generation (64GB) sounds great, but the software (itunes) won't auto update when ever I put new music in my music NAS! whats up with that? I used to use Zune (Yeah I know) but at lest Zune auto-updated every time I added new music! with itunes I have to tell it to scan the entire music folder (and that takes a few hour's... it's on a 4 TB NAS with itunes server) it's not perfect, but it works...I still miss Zune! oh well.... Each to there own! if you like Apple bully for you! me I'll stay with windows.

Yes Scott, it's ironic that they've switched to the x86 now :) The heart of a PC beats inside the Mac.
The 680x0 was a great CPU and served the Apple, Atari and Commodore systems well. I never discovered why Motorola rested on it laurels and let Intel take over in the 90s.
The Foxconn factories in China have been fitted with suicide nets to deter workers from jumping to their deaths where many have already done so. And Apple's executives/stakeholders are all right with that. Isn't that good to know! Sure makes me feel better! I have read Apple is building some new manufacturing plant here in the US to produce iMac's! (more like assemble iMac's) of course this is not the first time Apple has done this, but both times they failed and where shut down. What I have read is that Apple will hire just 200 people! and you can bet it won't last long either! This time Apple is investing $100 million into the project. Sure makes a good write off on there corporate tax's, since Apple has a ton of cash on hand.

Actually, as a point of FACT, I am older than DIRT!!! Hehehehehehhe :)
And, speaking of "Bucket Seats", some of the Klingon seats were taken directly from automobile bucket seats. Mark Banning, who used to be with GNC/Crescendo records has an original Klingon seat that he proudly displays in his front room! :) And, he also has possibly the largest collection of Klingon LCAR panels as well, very impressive stuff!
On another point, I just watched, over the weekend, a video entitled "Inside Star Trek, The real story", and I was amazed that EVERYTHING that Gene Roddenberry had said against the "network" (like they wanted the female second in command gone, because nobody out there in TV land would ever believe that a female could be in charge of anything!) was totally and completely FALSE!!! They had Grant Tinker, who was the head of the network (NBC) at that time, saying how much they loved women in charge, and named off a whole bunch of TV shows that NBC had done to prove his point! I mean, What the HELL?? Did Gene just make up all this stuff? Of course, I couldn't help to notice that all of the people who spoke out against that situation were EMPLOYEES of the network, or past employees, like Herb Solow! It just felt totally one-sided to me, and coming at a time when Gene or anybody like that could come forward with a different point of view! Seems like a slap in the back of the head to me!
It was really sad to see.
