Thanks for the Trek Band Photo, it's brilliant I'll be printing it as a poster tomorrow!

Ever heard of The Rasterbator? It's an awesome program where you can upload a photo and it will spit back a half-toned PDF version that you can print on many sheets of paper and hang on your wall to make one huge image.

Star Trek Monthly Comic #4 (Dec 2011)
IDW Publishing

This is from the TrekMovie site this week:

Star Trek Sequel clues in ongoing comic series

The new ongoing series of "Star Trek" comics set in the new movie universe kicked off in September. The first issues have retold a couple of classic Star Trek episodes, but with new twists. The comic series will continue to do different spins on old episodes, but will also be telling new stories (like the recently announced surviving Vulcans two-issue arc).

But these new comics, which are overseen by movies co-writer/producer Roberto Orci, are also filling in the gap of adventures between the 2009 Star Trek movie and the sequel, which opens May 2013. This is similar to how the ongoing Star Trek comics worked in the 80s. In addition, in 2013 we can expect there to be a prequel comic series (like "Star Trek Countdown" in 2009) and an adaptation of the sequel as well.

But apparently there is more to these new Star Trek comics. Writer Mike Johnson has revealed that the ongoing series will also be dropping hints about the upcoming Star Trek movie and in fact it apparently already has done so. In the latest Star Trek magazine Jonhson says

"One of the great things about working with Bob [Orci] is that we are able to use the ongoing series to very subtly lay in clues to the next movie. There might even be a tiny hint of a subplot in the first issue."

Speaking to TrekMovie Johnson confirmed that there was a subtle hint in issue 1 from September and there will be more as the we get closer to the sequel. He says there is also some "thematic foreshadowing" in issue 4, due out tomorrow. The writer noted that clues will "not be like the Da Vinci Code", but he also said that "when you see the movie you will be able to look back to the comics and say, ‘oh I see what they did there.’"

Ever since i heard the music in the final 37 seconds of Star Trek Voyager: Concerning Flight (Season 4 Episode 11)

i wanted that music without voices and SFX. I couldn't manage. What i managed however is
re-assembling the none-voiced parts in a manner, that they sound like that "lost" part, well at least it is an approximation of that - and i merged that with the rest.

Also, since i like the music so much, i played arround with it a bit in a 1:30 minutes long track.
I also tried some sound enhancements.

Everything is created from the original 37 seconds music from the show, as i can't play any instrument.
I am also no composer, but listening to music, perhaps i have at least "an ear".
The tracks come in flac format.

ALL EDITS ARE SEAMLESS, GIVING YOU UNINTERRUPTED MUSIC, JUST LIKE A NORMAL MUSICAL TRACK.

1) Original with SFX and voices
Voyager Converning Flight (Original with SFX, Voice).flac (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?bgfs4342hkutmu7)

2) Enhanced with the voices part simply cut out seemlessly
Voyager Converning Flight2 (SimpleVoicesCut).flac (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?qzed95zcr52qxvq)

3) My Playarround or better cut&paste arround of the finished 1min27 seconds track
Voyager Converning Flight3 (Cut and Paste).flac (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?60pk3x64xcqz0x6)

4) My Playarround or better cut&paste combined so the track again is 37 seconds long (you hear all my tweaks at once. Still i like number THREE above the best
Voyager Converning Flight4 (Cut and Paste all merged).flac (http://www.mediafire.com/?158a6l4vdavpsd4)

5) (Archer) Enterprise Maintheme Instrumental, EDITED.
I ripped it from Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ctC8PSy_Uc

Made some sound enhancements (the higher notes come out stronger),
extended the lenght and mixed in some guitar INSTANCES
from this very same tracks. I am very fond of the result :)

Actually, it sounds pretty good. It reminded me of back in 1975-76, when I first met SFX recording artist Ralph Miller, he had recorded every TOS episode with a reel to reel recorder. I convinced him that if he would re-record all the music from the episodes, cutting the vocals out, and since the music was mono, he could shift from right channel to left channel, with different pieces of music, and that way it would segue from one music source to the next. When finished, Ralph had a nice 90 minute piece of Star Trek music, since he had rechanneled the two mono channels into one mono track, and seamlessly created an hour and a half of Trek music for our listening pleasure! Granted, some of the tracks had sound effects in them, especially on the bridge scenes, but that was very minor, in that day!

As word got out, since Ralph took the finished 90 minute cassette to many Trek conventions, and played it constantly, people would come up and ask him for copies of the music, thrilled to be getting ANY original music from the show. Ralph was working part time at Radio Shack, and used their crappy cassettes, but he was doing it with his own money, never charging even for postage or cassette costs. That was really great!

Then, when Star Wars came out, Ralph and I drove about 30 miles from our homes, just to go to a drivein theatre that didn't have the new "Cinifi", which played the sound thru your car radio, as Lucas or 20th century would put a high pitched noise thru the system, to prevent recording. We went to a drivein in the city of Canoga Park, which had the standard, old school speaker boxes. Ralph had his reel to reel tape recorder in the back seat, and when we parked, he unscrewed the light on the top of the speaker box pole, and screwed in a plugin adapter. He plugged in his reel to reel recorder, and unscrewed the back of the speaker box, and tapped right into the cable. He had to lower the sound with resistors, because the sound level was too high, but we recorded the whole movie. We had to stay for the second showing to get the parts that we missed when he had to turn the tapes over. Ralph then took the original music, and spliced it into the mono vocals, creating a "Stereo" recording of the movie! He then recorded a cassette master, on a Radio Shack 120 minute cassette, and copied it while at work, using 10 cassette recorders, that were linked together!

I made full color labels and cassette box faces, looking as professional as possible, and we went to the next convention, and sold these copies! Of course, Ralph was going to charge for all the hard work he did, but we sold out on Friday, 40 copies (at 5.00 each, if I remember). We went home and grabbed every cassette recorder we could, and made 20 more copies (10 each) and sold those out before lunch on Saturday!!!! Went home early, and made 40 more (20 each) and sold those out by 3:00 on Sunday! We had spent alot of money to get these done, but we made alot of money also.
By the next convention, there were about 7 or 8 other dealers selling copies of OUR tape! go figure......

Actually, it sounds pretty good.William

Wow, thank you, i did expect you might hear many annoying things in the edits, things i'd never notice myself.
The whole background flute is a bit crappy of course, it's more an illusion than continued playing but luckily
the instruments on the forefront distract from that :)
Gee, your stories are always so captivating! What you say about mono/stereo ... well i have some VST plugins
were you can shift individual frequencies to the right/left/center and i am starting to wonder if that couldn't be
a great method to get rid of sound effects alltogether in some cases: You can make your programm analyze what you have shifted in (or out) more easy this way 2) and also, by creating many versions of the same track, were you only keep the frequencies wanted to be very pronouced, you combine these back into a new track, the subued sfx range frequencies are missing from, or at least VERY subdued. For example footsteps among Drums might not be easy do get rid of in that manner, but footsteps among strings, that might work very well.
I am no professionell sound editor, but i must say this makes more and more fun :)
(I am also shocked at the wide range of cheating that is possible, especially to the human voice)

Well, that's VERY exciting news. What settings/filters are you using? I'd love to try it out myself. :) Can't wait to hear what you've done to them.

Its called MDA Stereo, and it widens the stereo, but it adds a reverb/echo so it sounds tinny, it only seems to work good with the second season music, when I tried it with Corbomite Manuever it sounded terrible, I believe this is a similar process to what GNP did to Volume 2 and 3.

I also forgot to give great credit for the hard work of Faleel and Verisimilitude for there great additions to the Trek music scene...

Oh, and Verisimilitude, about the Blu-rays, the new clean channels are BL BR, however the pretty much sound like the rear channels, just a tiny bit better, though they are usually much cleaner, atleast thats how it was for the Jurassic Park blu-rays, the Front and Rear channels (the original ones) in the blu-rays should be a little bit higher quality, no compression and etc (I believe no static, but I am not sure)

Well, that's VERY exciting news. What settings/filters are you using? I'd love to try it out myself. :) Can't wait to hear what you've done to them.

If you are referring to the frequency shifting, i haven't really used that method to the end i described (but for other stuff, like shifting certain instruments into the center or more to (both) sides; still i think my reasoning is correct. Here's a list of stuff i use, it really isn't much:

Stereo:
- AAY-Audio VSTs, especially Stereolizer

----
General Cleanup:

- IZOTOPErx VSTs, especially Spectral Repair and Hum Removal

----
Frequency Attentuation (or flashing out or subdue or whatever WITHOUT shifting):

- AnalogCodeEQRangers1 Full Ranger VST
- Stillwell 1973 (has nice presets you should tweak to your comfort however)
- Stillwell BadBassMojo
- Stillwell Rocket
----

Thats it :)

For cutting and assembling i use good old Audacity.
Sound enhancements i do with Acoustica.
Both are very slim and for a beginner likeme that's the
perfect way to learn

Yes, I agree with you, Fringe really seems like "X-files", but with alot more nudity and sex thrown in, hehehehehe

Surely it's about time Paramount took a stab at a NEW Trek t.v. series.

they'd talked about it a few years back but then it was decided to reboot the franchise with that jj abrams movie that's kind of like star trek but isn't really trek

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has said lately he'd love to helm a new Star Trek TV series.

Seriously.

Well, the one thing that I wanted to do to expand MY Trek collection is that I have a GIANT pile of books, with a ton of Trek trivia, stories from the cast, and crew, like the TOS book that had all of Matt Jefferies artwork, and several of the latter Trek movies artwork books as well, just waiting for me to get the time to scan them in the computer, and place them somewhere for all Trek fans to enjoy and share. I was recently thinking that, short of buying a new FASTER scanner, I should scour the internet for someone who had already done that. Someone on this site was promising to scan his copy of Rick Sternbach's history of the federation book last year, but nothing came of it! (Dammit)

So, if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

That's exactly what I did when I read that McFarlane comment. lol

A new series is well overdue, though.

I think that Seth McFarlane would do a good job. Anyone who watches Family Guy and American Dad knows that there are constant references to Star Trek in it, and not all jokingly. The best one IMO is the skit where he parodies Spock's funeral when he loses Rupert, his teddy bear. Besides him doing shooting Rupert instead of Spock out of a torpedo tube, it was an homage to ST2. I heard he actually wanted to do a full length parody of Wrath of Khan like he did the original Star Wars trilogy, but CBS wouldn't let him, e.g. Fox wouldn't pony up the money. Here's how it would have been casted IMO.

Peter - Admiral Kirk, obviously
Brian - Spock
Stewie - Khan
Lois - Carol Marcus
Chris - David Marcus
Meg - Savik
Cleveland - Captain Terrell
Quagmire or Joe - Chekhov
Loretta (Cleveland's wife) - Uhura
I don't know about Scotty or Sulu

I think McFarlane really wants to show his serious side, and a new Star Trek series in the original timeline post voyager could be that vehicle for him. Without the Romulan Empire, the dominion or the Cardassians to contend with, his show would probably focus on renewed hostilites with the Klingons or possibly the Borg invading a significantly weakened Alpha quadrant.

The whole Dominion situation really brought down DS9, to the point that I wasn't even watching it anymore, I only liked the alternate universe episodes, and of course the TOS timeline episode, when they went back in time to the tribbles situation. But they could just start from the Starfleet academy, like the Trek movie, just make sure that it STAYS in this universe, not some alternate history crap thing, like J.J. did with the movie.
Or, they could just come up with another alien race/enemy from another side of the galaxy or another galaxy, after all, it's SCIFI!!!

well, in fairness, mcfarlane is definitely more knowledgable and a bigger fan than abrams, who has repeatedly said things like "i'm not really a trek fan..." and that he basically wants to just make trek more like star wars.

now i wish i could find a link, but i remember reading that back in '06 some guys had pitched a trek series idea to cbs that would've been called star trek: federation and been set in the 29?th century. it would've dealt with a dying federation trying to regain it's greatness as a beacon of peace and scientific discovery. of course it would've involved an all new enterprise as the new flagship and it would've been set far enough in the future that they could've done just about anything with the story without having to tamper with or contradict the pre-existing timeline from tos and tng eras (unlike abrams, who has no problem essentially erasing everything set after 2233 on a whim), which despite some minor issues, holds up remarkably well after 10 movies and 6 series.

not to go off topic and nerd ramble much more, but i still have a real problem with abrams' treatment of the trek universe. rebooting the timeline was a big mistake. i know they argue that the old timeline still exists parallel to abramsverse, but that's a weak argument and for all intents and purposes abrams has totally disposed of that timeline and swept it under the rug, as though it never happened. the fact that we had a rich tapestry consisting of so many different series and characters, all of which were connected as part of a bigger story, is what made trek great to me. this new franchise can't really be connected to that anymore...it's a shame but trek is dead to me now.

this is our one hope, that since paramount and cbs still acknowledge the existence of the prime universe as a parallel timeline, that we could potentially have another series that would continue that history. i doubt this is likely though, as they would probably be afraid it would confuse too many of the newbie trek fans (i.e. people that didn't like trek before jj raped it)

I presume you're referring to the fact that this thread was marked as updated before your post, but when opened it did not have a post by the person marked as having last posted ?.

The member indicated (I forget the id), when checked had not actually got any posts to his name.

I saw the same thing on a thread a few days ago.

I'm assuming that it has something to do with the recent forum changes.

Or was it? Here's something from a pro screenwriter, he doesn't mention Star Trek, but than it's not to hard
to make up your mind, if Star Trek fails (in some places) as an action flick. This guy does B-Movies mostlies or rehashes, but don't mistake his professional niche to make a buck in, with general geniousy:

Hi there! I just wanted to quickly say thanks to everyone on this forum for making these soundtracks and effects available. You are an awesome bunch of people and I really appreciate the efforts you have gone to. I just wish I had something I could contribute back.

I'd especially like to thank williamtaylor for the extended edition of the TWOK soundtrack by James Horner - my favourite soundtrack of all time (and my favourite film of all time) which was never really done justice by the rather short soundtrack album released in the 80s. Interestingly (from the early posts) James Horner was born in the same year as the mysterious williamtaylor - coincidence, or have I stumbled on THE TRUTH of his identity!?!?! ;-)

Actually there might be something I can share - I do have loads of ebooks, including the novels (the same files that have been posted here before), technical manuals, blueprints and roleplaying sourcebooks that have been published over the years, including many out of print and quite rare works (like the 1979 original Enterprise blueprints) that I'd be happy to share if you want them. Rather than play fast and loose with file sharing sites though, it might be more reliable to take requests for now and make them available if you want them. Let me know what you want and I'll see if I have it! I'll even publish a list when i get time to make one. My collection isn't very organised and weighs in at about 40 Gb so might be dodgy to share in one lump...

Again, thanks very much. :-)

Welcome to the board, Selezen, and thanks for your comments. If you had read all of the posts on this thread (I know, over 64 pages and counting) you would have seen others who had accused me of being James Horner, AND Danny Elfman, but alas, I am neither. It is true that I work in the biz, and have done some composing for films and TV myself, but nothing even close to the works of these two masters! I would like to call either of them my friend, but Danny barely knows me, or of me I should say, and Mr. Horner has far too many people around him to try and get in close. I have worked with him, but he is WAY up there, and I'm just down here.

As for you sharing TREK items on this board, I would say, knock yourself out, put up links as much as you want, play fast and loose with the file sharing sites, especially Mutiupload and Megaupload, that is what they are there for. Don't wait for any requests, because they just won't be coming, not like you would think. You may get a PM or two, but not that often.

The way you talk in your post, you sound British. Are you?

Gee, what a waste of resources. Doesn't anyone at the labels, movie studies and so on recognize, the market has completely shifted from selling and broadcasting SPECIFIC items to the distribution of ANY items (read: file sharing)? So, dear Paramount, Showtime, HBO, LaLaLand and whoever, instead of trying to control, who gets what at which price, try controlling getting it through YOU: Get yourselves the most decent servers possible and people will pay you for uploading and sharing, regardless of what is shared and uploaded. I don't mind you controlling and earning from distribution, because you are the ones putting the effort into giving us entertainment products in the first place, you nurture your screenwriters and actors and directors and orchestra, so yes: You deserve a share of the money, we don't wanna get you broke, who else could put up the money creating all this stuff? Be smart. Piracy will NEVER stop and you will continue to loose this fight and loose the money. Make it legal and make a profit out of it. Go into file sharing.

And for anyone doubting this would be possible, look at how opposing insurances companies deal with each other in cases of big insurance events, they see to it, that the involved parties get whats due to them according to contracts and at the same time ensure, none of the involved insurance companies gets broke over it. But for that to happen, i guess, you will first have to drop the competition among yourselves, don't you? Entertainment Industry you are so not 21st century!

Where did you see this? I don't think MegaUpload is coming back, but I also find it hard to believe that all our files actually are gone...

This was on the news! Megaupload had an announcement that had an IP address, which was only numbers, and if you went to it, there was a disclaimer from Megaupload staff saying that their site was up, but not accessible....yet! The newscaster stated that Megaupload would take a couple of weeks to reup all the files from the old site!

And, Babydoll (and others) Whatever you wish to reup is fine with me, under these circumstances! Just want to share with everyone, of course, so whatever you want to do is fine by me!

Gentlemen,
Thank you for this Thread! When I have more time I intend to read through this thread more thoroughly.
Thank you so much specifically for the "who mourns for Adonais" scores!

Maybe someone knows the answer to this. In the episode the "cloud minder" there is a cue from the scene where Vanna tries to attack Kirk while he's sleeping. Is that cue original to that episode? If not which one was it taken from?

Another question is do any of you know if there were any movies or tv shows that borrowed star trek the score? For example the movie Gladiator borrows a warrior chant from the movie Zulu.

Three days after the FBI shut them down? Well, then, that's precisely the site you should not be trusting. There's some very oddly worded sentences there, not to mention accuracies. "Beware to the pishing" should appropriately say "Beware of the phishing sites." Also, when I click on that link, it never loads anything. It takes too long and times out with an error message.

Interesting news:

Well in fact, elements for all series can be found. We have posted unreleased promo and master tape sessions for TOS, Next Gen, and Enterprise. Best of Trek I and II also have previously unreleased material for DS9 and Voyager. And of course both La La Land and FSM have released massive volumes of Next Gen score. I am estimating a total of nearly 2 dozen separate discs of Next Gen music. Not sure if one would really want or need more...?? :awsm:

"The Cloud-Minders" has no original score, all cues were tracked from previous episodes.

I presume you are referring to the first part of this scene, where Vanna is approaching Kirk? Well, that's from Fred Steiner, originally written for "Spock's Brain", first heard in the very first cue "The Abduction" (as named by Verisimilitude in his TOS rips), beginning at 1:56.

The second part of this cue, where Vanna is coming closer and closer to Kirk, was composed by Alexander Courage for "The Cage" (I seem to remember hearing it in the fight scene on Rigel VII between Captain Pike and the warrior).

The final part, when Kirk awakens and fights, was tracked with music by Jerry Fielding, originally written for "Spectre of the Gun", which originally was broadcast after "Cloud-Minders", but produced BEFORE.

Hope this answers your question!

And I thought that I was bad about ripping apart a score, and knowing where it was from originally! When my wife and I were watching "Russia house" with a score by Goldsmith, I knew where the music came from, which film it was originally written, since I had the "rejected" score by Goldsmith, and my wife yelled at me to "get a life" (she said it LONG before Shatner did, hehehehehehe)

however, I have to say, Soundtrekker, this goes far beyond my obsessions with music scores, you are THE man! :)

Why, thank you, Sir. I feel honored, indeed! This coming from you does mean a lot to me!

Well, I know too well what you mean, reading your little story with your wife and the Goldsmith score. Just two days ago, my wife and I watched a movie, and as soon as the credits ran, I saw the name "Alexander Siddig", and I said: honey, there's Alexander Siddig in this movie, that's Dr. Julien Bashir from Deep Space Nine! My wife looked at me and said: [insert the German equivalent of "get a life"]! Needless to say, I also let her know what composer she's hearing in any movie, at least as long as I'm able to identify him, like Goldsmith, Williams, Herrmann, Rozsa and a few others I love!

Now, I have to leave, to "get a live" - at least for a short while!

Wow! Soundtrekker! Amazing! Thanks. I was wondering if it was a mix of different scores. And even though my wife would probably tell me to "get a life" too, I know, as a person who appreciates music (and loves to sing) that it takes a person with a musical gift as you have to be able to easily dissect and ID that piece of music.

The boot for Star Trek VI not only is missing the "Trailer" cue but it is also missing the cue "The Search". It plays right after Spock says, "Now, we include our search to uniforms". Chekov asks, "All uniforms?" and then when it shows Spock looking up at Chekov with an eyebrow raised and nods that's when that cue begins. This particular cue sounds similar to what you hear in one part during the "End Credits".

With the OST for Star Trek VI having been out of print for a while I would not doubt that this will be an MAF release like Star Trek IV is.

What you guys have are the individule cues from later on.

Originally he posted a suite, but he got in trouble and had to take it down. So, he put up individule tracks later. The sutie has a tiny bit of score not found in those cues.

I was actually only planning on corralling the score aspects. There are still Fx, audio books, novelty records, tech manuals etc in this thread, that I feel are better suited to other folk. The range is just too big for me to dedicate to. A few odds and ends over on the re-ups, from you, Olaf, and I am done. I will maintain those scores, and fill any re-up request. But I am also doing the TV theme thing on two other sites, so I feel that is the limit of my promises..:)

The range is just too big for me to dedicate to. A few odds and ends over on the re-ups, from you, Olaf, and I am done. I will maintain those scores, and fill any re-up request. But I am also doing the TV theme thing on two other sites, so I feel that is the limit of my promises..:)

Babydoll is right, she can't take this unto herself all by herself. Anynone can create a mediafire account for free, worth 300mb. So folks, it's up to you now, lets combine efforts!

FIRST OF ALL: LOL. Look at number "#" of this thread
- sound familiar?! :D :D

NOW - Did another edit of an (Archer) Enterprise Series track, the goal was to make it sound more orchestral, more cinematic. The sound is a tad wider now, trumpets and strings and other high frequencies more crisp. To compensate i tweaked the lower freqs as well. Should sound especially well with a subwoofer in place, but i can only guess that. I hope u like.

Leave feedback please and there will be more ;)

And I thought that I was bad about ripping apart a score, and knowing where it was from originally! When my wife and I were watching "Russia house" with a score by Goldsmith, I knew where the music came from, which film it was originally written, since I had the "rejected" score by Goldsmith, and my wife yelled at me to "get a life" (she said it LONG before Shatner did, hehehehehehe)

however, I have to say, Soundtrekker, this goes far beyond my obsessions with music scores, you are THE man! :)

---------- Post added at 02:34 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:31 PM ----------

Ok, but see Faleel, that is different. The trailer music is composed specifically for the movie by the composer. That is usually not the case these days. trailer companies do generic pieces that can be used (and are forbidden on the forum btw).

there are rare instances where the composer still does original music for trailers that is unique from music in the film. shore did trailer music for return of the king.

Yes, something came up on another thread, that reminded me of a story about TREK that I wanted to share with all you good people here. "Industry Spies"!!! Trek has a TON of them, fans out there that will snitch to the studios about any "copyright" infringement situation. They think that they are being loyal to TREK by telling the studio if some other fan even has a COPY of a TREK soundtrack that hasn't been officially released! I have never been caught in the middle of any of these situations, because I don't really deal directly with any "Trekkies" or "Trekkers" or "Trekkettes" at all.
But I did talk with Greg Jein, a model-maker who has done some fantastic model work for the different TREK incarnations, and as a matter of fact, he was one of the people who built the 8 foot Enterprise-D for STTNG! While he was working on one of the films, he got his hands on the molds for the original 6 foot Enterprise from STTMP, and made about 10 copies out of fiberglass, and put them in storage for safe keeping. Several years later, he sold 5 of the ten ships, after he had some of his workers put them together, detail and paint them, and put them on a display stand. He sold them to some Japanese corporate types, for 5,000.00 each! Apparently one of his workers had spread the word that he was doing this, and Greg was told by a friend of his at the studios that the executives at the studios were ordering search warrants for his house, his shop, and several storage units that they knew about. Greg had to rush to get all of his TREK stuff moved to a new storage unit, that he went and got under an assumed name! He left ONE of the Enterprise castings in one of his storage units.
When the studio suits showed up, with the LAPD in tow, they went thru everything with a fine tooth comb, grabbing stuff from 2001, voyage to the bottom of the sea, and many other non-TREK movies and shows. Greg was arrested, and taken to the Hollywood LAPD office, and held for 12 hours of questioning, while the suits and cops went thru all of his storage units. Greg had to hire an attorney, and sue the city to get his stuff returned. Fortunately, the only thing that was kept was the Enterprise castings, and Greg rec'd a letter from the studio, warning him that if he ever sold copyrighted material, he would be sued, and never work on any Paramount production...EVER! All because some fan wanted to impress the studio!

What did he think that the studio was going to do? Give him a private tour of the sound stages? Give him a bunch of money? Let him take whatever he wanted from some secret TREK treasure cave? YEAHRIGHT! No accounting for intelligence.

A question: Dennis McCarthy has apparently "let slip" that we'll get a complete Generations release sometime, I've been looking out for any other word about this but so far nothing. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

justin boggan
03-18-2012, 07:48 PM
There's no definitive answer. The quick one is that maybe Dennis McCarthy doesn't know the defunct GNP Records holds the rights, and they apparently don't play ball, but even that isn't settled on.

When Film Score Monthly released the Jones Box, they couldn't get the full score for "The Best of Both Worlds" (instead only releasing cues not on the GNP CD) because GNP had the rights and wouldn't play ball. But the confusing thing is, they [GNP] also did "Heart of Glory", which FSM included the complete score to on their CD.

If I had to take a guess on what's happening, I'd use to points:

1. Perhaps "The Best of Both Worlds" is a popular seller and they want to keep the rights. Maybe "Generations" isn't.

2. The Announcement for "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" at Intrada had this in it:

Intrada presentation is part of current ongoing CD restoration series of complete STAR TREK film soundtracks being overseen by Paramount, this one through courtesy of both Paramount, UMG. (Other titles appear on Film Score Monthly, La-La Land labels.)

So the short answer is: we don't really know, but maybe.

All very interesting. On a related note, do you (or anyone else) know why a full TOS boxed-set has not been officially released by anyone? The Trek soundtrack gurus over at FSM tease about this in various posts, that there is some problem preventing an official release (even though clearly there is a market for it), but refuse to elaborate. Anyone know the true story? Thanks,

An unidentified person or persons is holding up TOS. It's not Paramount or CBS, and I think I found out it wasn't the Roddenberrg Estate either.

At this point I can only guess. Maybe, since Alexander Courage was cheated out of royalties by Gene for the theme music, then laced throughout the show, there's some trouble there. Maybe somebody holds tapes and for some reason or other they won't part with them. We can only guess without more information.

Right now there's nothing holding up D.S.9., Voyager, and Enterprise, other than that the La La Land Records 3CD TNG set is selling not so well (keep that in mine when any of you ask for a download, rather than buy it).

Okay, everyone, I want to say something regarding the Star Trek TOS sound effects that I posted here. There are THREE discs filled with sound FX. I had offered ALL of these to Crescendo records, however, Neil Norman had decided that he only wanted some, not all of the SFX, and pulled only one partial CD worth, about 45-50 minutes. The rest that he did not use, I put onto three discs, with some extra music and stuff added for filler. I got a nasty email from a troublemaker, who is NOT on this board, stating that he reported me to Neil, and was told that Neil was going to sue me for doing that. Since he had gotten the copyright for those limited sound effects, he has no right to include the other sounds. I'm sure that his corporate attorney will tell him that, of course Neil doesn't have the brains that God gave a snail, so........

And this applies to any record company. As long as what you post is not what some company has released, for example, extra tracks from "Superman" the motion picture, then it CAN be posted here, since it doesn't post any tracks on their release. Neil took the master reel to reel tapes and pulled off sounds here and there, with the help of one of his STAR TREK "experts" who ID'd a bridge sound effect as the transporter room! (What a MORON!) Anyway, there has been discussions all over this board that we cannot post this or that, belonging to VS or FSM. However, if you are VERY careful, and only use tracks that are NOT on their release, then there is no copyright infringement, and they should not be able to say a freaking thing! It would be best to just hold the link and have people PM you as well, just to be safe.

That's my two cents on that subject.

That is not entirely true. According to Sanico, who is mod of this section, if an album was last posted by Varese or FSM, then NO music can be posted from that score. Not unreleased scores, not tracks missing from the OST, not promos, not dvd or fan made rips or albums. None, as lone as FSM and Varese are the sole releaser. She has been VERY clear about this. Site rules, mind you.

William was talking about the law, not site rules, you shouldn't mix arguments. A ban from ffshrine hardly gets you into prison. Still, house rules apply, so of course we behave ourselves :)

"As long as what you post is not what some company has released, for example, extra tracks from "Superman" the motion picture, then it CAN be posted here, since it doesn't post any tracks on their release."

:erm: I am not mixing arguments. I am clarifying this for folks who are not aware of "house rules". I understand his point. Thanks for the lecture and admonishment though.

**seriously thinking I will take another break from here**

Woah, no admonishment here - i simply stated a fact: William was talking law, you were talking house rules. Those are entirely different spheres of argument. So lets keep a firm grip on our topics and if we change them, let's state so. Dialogue is hard enough when it is not face-to-face, that's why there are rules for changing topics too, at least in the art of rhetorics.
Anyways, my remark was not to diminish you or your cause. Reminding people of the rules here IS important, i didn't complain about you doing that in ANY way, never will, it's easy to recognize you just wanna help newcomers and who could have anything against that?

Williamtaylor1969
03-30-2012, 05:04 PM
Yes, I was talking strictly legal here. If "Sarah" doesn't want ANYTHING from VS or FSM to be posted here in any way, shape or manner, that's her LAW. I cannot contest that. The only thing that I know is "Corporate" law, as in copyright law, from my early days, when I wanted to become an attorney (JEEEZZZ, what was I thinking?) I know that what is covered by a copyright has to be VERY specific in it's "legaleese", and there are many holes in most contracts like that, so everyone in the movie biz has to walk on eggs about this. This is why there were TWO James Bond films in production at the same time, by two different studios, two different production companies, the whole shebang!

And YES, Neil Norman is currently sitting on 11 episodes of unreleased music from TOS. He was given the master tapes from Greg Jein, and NOBODY has been allowed to hear them. I got this from Mark Banning, who worked for Neil for about 12 years before moving onto bigger and better. Neil is not happy that the sales on the last couple of CDs has been bad, but (of course) a couple of these were not completely TOS music, were they? Neil is kind of holding onto those tapes, like he doesn't want anyone else to even know that he has them. Too bad, if I had known that Greg Jein had them 15-20 years ago, I would have made him an offer he couldn't refuse (NOT in the Godfather way, either, hehehehe)

If "Sarah" doesn't want ANYTHING from VS or FSM to be posted here in any way, shape or manner, that's her LAW.William

Lol, now we are using "law" as metaphor, this is getting complicated ... :D

Great story as always William!

I think we can answer the question now of whether there will be a complete Generations.

The Final Frontier had it's expanded/complete release before The Voyage Home did. Generations will likely be last. Don't count it out yet.

The Symphonic Orchestra of Jays is proud to present to all star trek music fans a little piece that was composed by David Bell. I wasn't able to find any of his scores without SFX, but I was able to arrange the piece and make it sound like the Enterprise scores. For example, the french horns and trumpets were synthesized, and some reverb was put in, as well as compression, EQ, and bass boost.

This piece is the last 40 seconds of music from the episode "Barge of the Dead" (6x03) Composed By David Bell, arranged by JayJay23 using East West Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Silver and FL Studio.

I hope you enjoy the work of art, and if anyone on this thread has any suggestions on how I can improve on my orchestrations, feel free to comment on it and see what you think. Also, I encourage you to check out my channel on this site (jayjay23) for more star trek stuff! Enjoy!
