Actually, as a point of FACT, I am older than DIRT!!! Hehehehehehhe :)

And, speaking of "Bucket Seats", some of the Klingon seats were taken directly from automobile bucket seats. Mark Banning, who used to be with GNC/Crescendo records has an original Klingon seat that he proudly displays in his front room! :) And, he also has possibly the largest collection of Klingon LCAR panels as well, very impressive stuff!

On another point, I just watched, over the weekend, a video entitled "Inside Star Trek, The real story", and I was amazed that EVERYTHING that Gene Roddenberry had said against the "network" (like they wanted the female second in command gone, because nobody out there in TV land would ever believe that a female could be in charge of anything!) was totally and completely FALSE!!! They had Grant Tinker, who was the head of the network (NBC) at that time, saying how much they loved women in charge, and named off a whole bunch of TV shows that NBC had done to prove his point! I mean, What the HELL?? Did Gene just make up all this stuff? Of course, I couldn't help to notice that all of the people who spoke out against that situation were EMPLOYEES of the network, or past employees, like Herb Solow! It just felt totally one-sided to me, and coming at a time when Gene or anybody like that could come forward with a different point of view! Seems like a slap in the back of the head to me!

It was really sad to see.

William

I'm surprise that nobody has picked any holes from the TMP Enterprise that was released with issue 2

All-righty then. I didn't pick up the movie-refit. This model is great if you like to see the Enterprise in a dark shade of battleship grey :)

Yeah, yeah, I remember the Klingon captain in TMP, when the camera was behind his chair you could clearly make out "RECARO".

Well, got some good news for you's (hehehehehehe) Since I now have a handle on all my "work" stuff, I can now turn my attention to my sadly lacking deleted and out of date LINKS!!! I will start reupping all my links for ALL my posts, and I think that I will just revamp my first post, on page one, so all the new people, who find this thread, will start with page one, and there will be all the updated links, and I'll even put links over to the other threads (ie: TOS set links and Into Darkness links) that other people had started, instead of posting here.

I started this thread so that ALL the TREK stuff would be in one spot, NOT to stroke my ego, as some have accused me of doing, That was NOT the reason for this, I just got sick and tired of looking all over the site for similar links to similar subjects. I felt that all the TREK stuff should be on one thread, and all the STAR WARS stuff should be on another, but just one, not slammed out all over 8 or 10 different threads, which only rolls up the confusion factor 100 fold!

So, it begins!

Rejoice, rejoice!!! Hehehheheehe :)

Why not starting with the "A Major Sonata" from Domenico Scarlatti which I played so masterfully during my little encounter with the brave Enterprise people here on Gothos? Followed by the "F Minor Sonata", of course, and the Strauss waltz "Southern Roses", played so wonderfully by Lt. Uhura (with a little help from me, of course!)? Thank you for these updates, William! I've got my own short laundry-list of Trek items that I must have in order to be a complete being. Can't wait!

But wait, you're going to re-up all of YOUR original posts, but I don't suppose you could revive other dead links originally posted by other individuals, couldja? I mean, if you (or some other kind humanoid) uploaded from the link, it wouldn't be a great trick to re-upload, would it (I mean, besides gross amounts of time)?

If only other posters on this thread could be so civic-minded as to maintain their links just long enough for [B][SIZE=3]ME to get MINE!
After that, you can all kiss my black-armoured ass and the links can go to hell 'cuz I gots mine, homey! Muahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!

~Ahem~ The Dark Side made me type that...

Now, will the updates be posted as you make progress, in future postings from this point forward?

Or, do you recommend we begin on page 1 and work our way through this labyrinthine thread? I'll probably get caught up sometime in 2015...

I BELIEVE WHAT GENE SAID.....and anyone that believes Network people, ain't got common sense!

William, will you tell us of your adventures with the Dinosaurs. :)

Nah, Gene was lying through his teeth to save face with certain people - like Majel Barrett. NBC objected to Gene hiring his mistress as a lead character, they had no problem with having a woman in authority. But Gene told Majel this BS story and promised to "get her on the show somehow." Hence Nurse Chapel. None of this is really new info; the book that this special is based on came out in 1997. Once he died, and the fear of libel was gone (since Gene would have sued to save his good name and rep), people came out of the woodwork. Some of it I took with a grain of salt - those that gave him no credit for anything good in Star Trek. But others have been corroborated by others and backed up by internal memos and other info in the UCLA files.

You want to know even more stuff that's been held back? Read this book; "These Are the Voyages - TOS Season 1" by Marc Cushman. There will be a volume for each season. I have season 1 and it's a great, if flawed, read. Some very interesting revelations in there, including one about the real ratings the show had in the first season. Hint: it wasn't the failure the network lead people to believe.

These are the Voyages, TOS, Season One: Marc Cushman, Susan Osborn: 9780989238113: Amazon.com: Books (http://www.amazon.com/These-are-Voyages-TOS-Season/dp/0989238113/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380391887&sr=8-1&keywords=tos+these+are+the+voyages)

This, plus the Justman/Solow book, are the definitive story. Ignore actor stories and "people on the set" gossip and go with the stuff from the files and the memos. There has been over 45 years of BS thrown around.

Thanks for this - I've been thinking of reading that and it's helpful to have a review from someone who frequents this board. I read and enjoyed Inside Star Trek, the Justman/Solow book. An element of annoyance comes across in it; a desire to not exactly set the record straight but tell their sides of the story, which they do. Gene was undeniably a massively creative and very smart human being but you do get the sense that they're impatient with his tendency to big himself up - almost as if they've forgotten what a storyteller he is. I think a word that they'd prefer used regarding his status is "originator" of Star Trek rather than "creator" as their argument is that despite the original idea being his, no one person was responsible for putting together the original show, and that he later appeared to take credit for a great many things that were actually the creation of a huge team. All that's well documented anyway of course, and yet Gene is still seen as the sole creator. Do cultural phenomenons need leaders? I dunno - I still don't know what I think about all this, although it is of course fascinating to read the many viewpoints and testimonies. I want to read this book too to get even more of an overview.

One thing's for sure, Star Trek would not exist without Gene and even if the making of TOS had played out differently, I think it needed his central philosophy to steer it beyond a short-term if well-remembered 60s SF show. It's that optimism and positivity at the core of it that is its most essential engine (yeah, even in DS9, which is riffing on it in another way).

Very Interesting......

But STUPID!!!! Hehehehehehehe :)

Actually, I was quoting Spock!!! Guess I should have said "Fascinating" :)

And, YES, I will really have to check that book out! I was always curious about the two biographies on Gene Roddenberry, one official, and one not, my choice would be to read the NOT one first! But that's just me, hehehehe

The Great Bird of the Galaxy was a God to me. He created Star Trek, my first Sci-Fi love, and it don't matter what is said about him bad, I won't let it tarnish my admiration of him. Gene was the only one from Hollywood that I can tell you where, and what I was doing on the announcement of his death, I was depressed the whole day, because he meant so much to me back then.

Let the storm of disagreements and discussions begin but, finally sat down and watched, 'Star Trek Into Darkness'. And while I didn't originally like the idea of Abrams taking the canon and pointing it in another direction. I did think this film was a fun ride. There will always be great 'Star Trek' and there will always be less than great. It may be stepping on the toes of 'Wrath of Khan', but I think I finally settled into the idea that it is like the 'Mirror Universe' direction of the television series. A twisted place to visit, but we will always have the original to return to.

My thoughts precisely.

Although let's be honest, I don't think the movie medium is best for the Star Trek crew to Boldy Go Where No One Has Gone Before. How many of the movies actually kept within that, honestly? They tried with the first one but it didn't pan out well at all. Most of the ones after that were action movies. Which is why I think we need a new TV series.

As for Into Darkness, I think the novel adaption does a better job at explaining certain things (like Khan's jump to Kronos).

Agreed. Television is the best medium for Star Trek to play out its stories. I do hope that when it finally returns to where it belongs, those in charge choose to follow the original canon and not the new direction the films have taken. By themselves, these last two films stories (even as retold tales) probably wouldn't have translated back to the small screen well. These were more aimed at the wow factor then the story. All movie goers, no matter how discerning, can never expect to go into each and every film they see expecting it to be a perfect blend of all its aspects, as all have different tastes in what they like. But we can all agree, I would think, that sometimes you watch a film not to be amazed by how wonderful it is rather just to have a fun time.

As was I, my friend. I had met the man many times, and even had a meal or two with him, as well as some of the others. But, in all reality, he really was a horrible businessman, he always let the studio, and the network walk all over him! Plus the fact that 90% of Star Trek was "inspired" by Forbidden Planet, right down to the transporter tubes!

Many others have made this comparison/observation previously, so I'm not saying anything new, but I would LOVE to see someone who owns the rights to the MGM films, take a new stab at making a new film, about 100 years AFTER the C-57D has left the Altara system, or whatever the hell it was called (senior moment, okay?) and see how it would be updated to make a sort of Star Trek type universe. I think that they could have a gold mine at the box office, if only someone would pull his or her head out of their ASSES!!!!

The one thing that they did with this movie that I really HATE when I see it, and TREK has done this time and again, is when our heros come across an advanced piece of technology, it always has to be destroyed by the end of the movie/episode! Why would you want to do this, time and again? It's just getting old, and it wouldn't happen that often in real life! Imagine what the Earth technology would be like with all the amassed knowledge of the Krell! What would they do with Robby, after 100 years of reverse engineering? Would the C-57D have a secondary hull and nacelles attached to the saucer? (hehehehehe)

I would really like to hear other points of view on this subject.

but we will always have the original to return to.

Will we?
The way modern mentality works, the original and rest of proper Trek will likely fall into obscurity because there's now a new fun super-cool-awesome Star Trek by JJ.

For example, just look how many people are willing to watch old Dr Who nowadays. Do they even bother to air it (outside UK) on TV anymore?

I enjoyed the two latest Star Trek films, yes lots of special effects and eye candy on the scene helps but they were good Sci-Fi movies. I was a teenager when Star Trek first came out, my friends and I didn't miss an episode. It was new and did " to boldly go where no one has gone before". Since then we have had plenty of other Sci-Fi series on TV like Babylon 5 and Firefly. Then there were all the Star Trek spin offs like TNG and Deep Space 9. Throw in Star Wars movies, Wing Commander, Riddick and the rest, can we honestly say that any Star Trek movie can "to boldly go where no one has gone before" because someone else has done something like it in another movie with different stars but similar plots. Back when Star Trek came out it was fresh and exciting because it did things that no one else was doing at the time. It's hard to do that today since all that fresh and exciting of then is now the same old stuff today. This is something we should consider when we compare the original Star Trek to the Star Trek movies of today.

I guess I'll jump in here!

First I have watched Star Trek from the very beginning (1966) at the tender age of 9 years old! and fell in love with it, watched it in reruns all they way into high school, read James Blish adaptations (and still have them), watched every movie (more then a dozen times for each one at the theater), have the VHS tapes of TOS, DVD, every movie (DVD), watched Star Trek The Next Penetration....hmmm Generation, DS9 (not my cup of tea), Voyager and Enterprise. I have read The Making of Star Trek (first edition), and every book I can get my hands on concerning Star Trek. I for one watched the first JJ movie and was sick to my stomach! my brother and I just watched into darkness, now my younger brother is 5 years my junior, so he did not watch trek as much as I did, but after we had watched this even he complained, that it was not Trek as he even know it, not only that he found more holes in the whole plot then I had! Gene Roddenberry was just a man and was a flawed human being as we all are, but he did create something that had never been shown (at that time anyway) of what a united human race could accomplish (a great dream, thou just a dream) that changed the outlook of the entire world! (well not everyone, but enough) as AZ stated a god! imperfect as he was, with all the temptations as the rest of us, and of course it was us fans that idealized him that feed into his ego that did the damage. So if Gene became a megalomaniac it was because of us fans, plan and simple...that's what Hollywood does to some people and of course power! which is one of the reasons humans will never reach Gene's dream of a united world...human quest for power over others and greed.

Personally I would love to see in my life time a united world, but I know that is not going to happen! but back to what I was saying, it seems to me that the younger generation is more interested in the whiz bang of CGI, fast paced images then story! which is sad, but what do we except from a generation of "Instant Gratification", "No Respect", "Human life Is Worth Nothing"! At lest in Star Trek human life was worth a whole lot more or as someone once said "The Needs Of The Many Outweigh The Needs Of The Few Or The One" has been totally lost on the younger generation! All I see today is "do whatever you want to do as long as it feels good" damn the consequences!! It has gotten to the point that if a movie has a story it makes all most nothing at the theater, but if it has gratuitous sex and violence then it makes a ton of money (look at the Matrix) story started out great, to set humanity free (a noble cause) but died real fast, movies 2 and 3 just went back to violence and settled for a draw! what the hell was that! I'll stick to the old Star Trek as I know it...were "The Human Adventure Has Just Begun"

Sony bought MGM a long time ago I believe, but whether it's still with them I don't know.

About destroying technology our protagonists come across, that's indeed a common theme. What with the militarisation of space and constant hostility in the galaxy, it's always easier to destroy than build. As is the case in real life. And so goes the art of story writing, or what has now become 'destorying' where all the audience gets is on screen fighting as the main function of the story. But the notion of "we have to destroy this item so that it doesn't fall into the wrong hands" is the complete opposite of real human nature and what is actually happening in the world today. Some writers are so ******* lame.

I hope your saucer can be separated when the melodramatic music starts :)

Who has heard of Space Patrol, Tom Corbett, or Rocky Jones from the 50's? When I discovered them, so cool, but, do you see them on TV now? No. Today you got to have the WOW factor. A pitty.

Once again, no fault in your argument!

When Firefly came out, FOX wanted to get into the action, fast. So, in their haste, they did not show the Pilot movie "Serenity" first, where you got to know the characters. Today's Generation don't want to get to know the people in the story, just get to the killing, destruction, and blow your mind effects. As for sex, I never understood why they throw it into a movie or series, where it don't need to be. Come to think of it, why see it, we already know what goes on behind closed doors, so why leave them open.....perverts!:)

I too, would like to see a new FP movie, as you described. I know there was talk of a prequel, and not sure about that. We know what happened before the C57-D came, and to the Krell. We don't need another Star Wars, where you really didn't need to see where Dark Helmet....Darth Vader came from.

No more Star Wars indeed. It went down a slippery slope after 1977, downhill after 1980, and completely down the pan after 1983 :)

Scotty57, I understand where you are coming from. It's like a cop watching a cop show or a soldier watching a war movie-its hard to enjoy a movie when you can find so much wrong with it. A long time friend of mine told me he didn't like any of the movies or the spin off series and only enjoyed reading star trek books and the original series. He is a purist and it is hard to enjoy something when you are constantly looking for and seeing holes in the plot. I like the concept of Star Trek and tend to over look the holes and try to just enjoy the movie. I have most of the box sets of Star trek and the spin offs, I still enjoy watching the original Star Trek the most.
AZSneed, Firefox was one series both my daughters and I really liked, like Star Trek they took it off the air way to soon. Your right, a good Sci-fi movie doesn't need sex to sell. A couple good looking women isn't bad but they don't need the bedroom scenes.

On of the things that made Star Trek so great when it first came out was the cast. Few if any tv shows of the time had a African-American woman, an Asian, a Russian, and an Alien (Spock) as main characters. The one that really caught my attention was Scotty. What tv show was brave enough back then to put on a Scot from Scotland as a main character? It took many years after before someone got the courage to make a Scot a star in the film Braveheart. :)

I’m primarily a TOS, TNG and DS9 fan, though I watched all of VOY and ENT too. (I think ENT was the better of those two latter shows, even though the idea of a prequel didn’t appeal to me much).

The first JJTrek was a surprise for me – like I said, I wasn’t into the idea of prequels much so when it was first announced and I felt that familiar tug – “take us forwards, not backwards!” But I tried to keep an open mind and was rewarded by what I felt to be a hugely enjoyable movie. I liked that they went to the trouble of preserving the “prime” universe but remixed everything we knew into new shapes, new directions. And maybe that’s how it should’ve stayed – going off on its own tangent, exploring new directions, boldly going and all that.

So I was looking forward to Into Darkness, and I ignored all the rumors. But it proved to be the film that I was worried ST09 would be. Man, Into Darkness was a big disappointment. Not so much because it was riffing on old characters, but because the core of it felt so out of step with what Star Trek was meant to be and has been in the past. I don’t have a problem with Trek going “dark” per se – DS9 did this in no uncertain terms in the 90s and explored aspects of the universe none of the other shows dared go, although on occasion ENT tried and delivered some decent drama as a result. What peeved me most about JJTrek II was the absolute paucity of optimism and desire for exploration at its core. It seemed cynical, postmodern for the sake of it with writing that called attention to its own reversals, its own cleverness. So self-consciously full of itself, so cluelessly bereft of any actual new ideas.

I know there’ll be a third JJ-style Trek and now Bryan Fuller’s out there saying he’d like to do a TNG in that universe. Blehh. Please, no!

Put it back on TV, Star Trek’s natural storytelling environment. Take me back to the prime universe, take me back to the timeline I know and take us forward, into the future. You don’t have to be slavish about acknowledging that, but it’s a good way of giving a totally new shipboard environment a sense of familiarity while updating everything so it feels right for the current world. Revamp the way you tell the story – give us arc plots like Game of Thrones with intelligent human drama, politicking and exploration, a bit of space warfare. This could all be done without contradicting earlier developments in the prime timeline or alienating fans from JJTrek.

I don’t care that CBS has the rights – if done correctly, an intelligent, thought-through Star Trek for these times that included the crucial idea of optimism – positivity – could be huge.

How on earth would THAT work? They'd have to recast and then explain it as them being younger when the Enterprise-D was built etc etc... Some of the stars of TNG are quite past it now (with exception of Patrick Stuart who seems to never age) and at least one of them doesn't want to revisit their role anyways.

On top of that, with the new timeline being so different, there is a very good possibility that some (if not all) of the TNG characters would not exist in the 24th century.

I know where you're coming from, but unfortunately CBS is also a news (propaganda & bullshit) provider. We are unlikely to see what you describe as "intelligent, thought-through Star Trek" because their command and control will probably not allow it, even though there's plenty of material waiting to be coded into Star Trek episodes. Anything as influential as Star Trek will be scrutinised for evidence of dissent to government policy. So we're stuck with space battles with aliens, and time-travel. Personally, I'd like to see more chicks writing for Star Trek. Some of my favourite episodes were written by chicks. Enough of the macho garbage.

Sony bought the studio, but ted turner bought the vault and owns all of MGM's movies! so if there is going to be a remake or a prequel it will have to go through Turner first. For the life of me I can't think of one actor that could reprise the roll of Doctor Morbius, Walter Pidgeon was perfect for the roll!

I did a google search on Forbidden Planet and found this at the bottom of Wikipedia page...

"New Line Cinema had developed a remake with James Cameron, Nelson Gidding and Stirling Silliphant involved at different points. In 2007 DreamWorks set up the project with David Twohy set to direct. Warner Bros. re-acquired the rights the following year and on October 31, 2008, J. Michael Straczynski was announced as writing a remake, Joel Silver was to produce.[26] Straczynski explained that the original had been his favorite science fiction film, and it gave Silver an idea for the new film that makes it "not a remake", "not a reimagining", and "not exactly a prequel". His vision for the film would not be retro, because when the original was made it was meant to be futuristic. Straczynski met with people working in astrophysics, planetary geology and artificial intelligence to reinterpret the Krell back-story as a film trilogy.[27] As of January 2013, no more information had been released about this Forbidden Planet remake; the project appears to have disappeared into development limbo or gone directly into industry turnaround".

I stand corrected! I guess Warner Bror. owns the rights to Forbidden Planet! at lest in 2008, but who knows now!

I too loved Firefly! and still watch it, hell even my 86 year old mother likes it :)

Being a retired Law Enforcement Officer (15 years as a Deputy Sheriff, medically retired) I laughed my ass off on most of what Hollywood put's out on so called cop shows! 90 percent routine calls, traffic stops and 10 percent balls to the wall, hair raising (turn your hair gray or fall out) calls! Back in my time, hard nosed criminals know not to draw or shoot a cop! Because they know that they would never make it to jail, just a one way trip to the morgue [cause of death....Lead Poisoning]. Today people have "No Respect" for a cop or the law, and cops hands have been tied with all these feel good, lets all just get alone BS policies! (Enforcing the law my friends, means sometimes you have to be the hard ass! and do the hard thing) all this leads to is more cops and innocent civilians being killed! [There is a old saying we cops use..."I would rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6"] Don't get me wrong, I am not advocating a "Shoot Them All and Let God Sort Them Out" attitude! but if people understood that if you break the law, your going to jail for a very long time [and end up being someones bunk buddy] or if you murder someone, your life is forfeited! and actually do it.

Here in California we have over 800 people sitting on death row! and all of them will die of old age before they even see the inside of the death chamber! If we started taking them outside and putting them to death, one after another, and let the population know and see it, we would see crime rates drop! That is the reason the death penalty does not work! Criminals know we are not going to put them to death, so why fear the law! and why life is so cheap. Sorry I went off on a tangent....

Well that's just dandy. Ted "A total population of 250-300 million people, a 95% decline from present levels, would be ideal" Turner owns the bloody vault. I didn't know that. Goddamn media moguls.

Since you mention J. Michael Straczynski, your info explains something. I always thought one of the scenes on the Epsilon 3 planet below the Babylon 5 station, was very reminiscent of Forbidden Planet. I'm talking about the scene with The Great Machine where Sinclair was walking across a massive bridge and giant machines were traveling at an angle.

Let It Die

by Mark Alfred

When I find myself in fear for Trekdom, William Shatner comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, Let it die
And when a show is canceled, he is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, Let it die

Let it die, let it die, let it die, let it die
Whispered words of wisdom, let it die

And when the broken hearted geeks and Trekkies learn to get a life,
They won't die of cancer -- Let it die
For though Trek may be canceled they can always find a job or wife,
Learn to be a dancer -- Let it die

Let it die, let it die, let it die, let it die
Learn to sing and dance, and let it die

And when the Trek is over, there is still a world alive out there,
The sun will shine tomorrow, Let it die
So move out of your mother's basement, learn to shave and wash your hair,
Learn these words of wisdom, Let it die.

I guess the days are gone where a show simply has to sell advertising so as to deserve its existence - now it has to be a propaganda tool too. I don't think it's out of the realms of all reason to think it could be intelligent though - the best writing usually chafes against some sort of constraint, whether a rule or a budget. And a total ditto on the chicks angle.

The city I live in has a population of around 500,000 people, there are around 300 cops [that's PD not the Sheriff Department, we took care of the County, PD takes the City] that are on duty (during the day) to protect 500,000 people! each cop runs anywhere between 300 to 400 calls in a 12 hour shift, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Today you could not pay me enough to be a cop! not with all the rules they work under and all the touchy-feely sensitivity training crap! Thank You NO! No I haven't! He certainly has an even bigger head than I thought. Also, if he's that keen on reducing the surplus population he ought to start the ball rolling with himself. "Tonight on pay-per-view, Ted Turner, an egotistical old fart will hose down his entire family with a machine gun and then top himself as a finale live on television as an example to others."

The police has always been notoriously underfunded, especially in the USA. Queensryche even referred famously to the issue in their 1991 classic "Empire". Our police over here is also getting trimmed down quite a bit. Whether it's an austerity issue or not I'm not sure. One thing's for sure, the taxes never go down.

Personally, I really don't see the connection between Babylon 5 and Forbidden Planet. The connection between FP and TREK is REALLY obvious, and the connection between B5 and DS9 is REALLY obvious, that's why J. Micheal had sued Paramount for copyright infringement. Apparently he took B5 to Paramount first of all, and they (Rick Berman) rejected it, then turned around and "created" a new Star Trek with a space station sitting at the edge of a wormhole!!!! Does anyone have to be blind, mute and dumb to NOT see a connection? I have no idea what the outcome of the lawsuit was, but I'm sure, in Hollyweed, the studios just throw a ton of money at whomsoever is suing them. Look at that woman that claimed Speilburg stole ET from her idea, she got a TON of money, and it never even made it to court!

If Ted Turner offed himself that would be a blessing! To bad he is not married to Hanoi Jane anymore, he could take care of two problems in one show....Now I'd pay to watch that!

I'm surprised you don't receive TCM! it's offered on Dish Network, Direct TV, unless they are not offered there! which sucks....

Here in the USA it's the contracts the city and county have signed with our unions that is causing the slow down in recruits or layoff's! just last year the city PD union had to take a pay cut to avoid layoff's! I was talking to one of the union reps (my union) a few weeks ago and because of the state of affairs here in California (132 BILLION in debt) a Deputy nearest backup is 30 to 45 minutes away! with no end in sight. It's caused by two things, State's, City's and County's spending more money then they bring in and the unions (all the unions) demanding "Cadillac" benefits for there members that the tax payers can never afford! hence ""Unfunded Liability's". Yeah the one constant in the Universe! Taxes!!! Now that the US Government is parsley shutdown, I breath a little better, the less I see of the Government, the better I am.

The Forbidden Planet Great Machine

The Babylon 5 Great Machine

According to J. Micheal in his own book, he accepted the fact that Paramount was developing its own station story, and that's the reason they rejected his. I'm not sure how he can go to court with that attitude. Personally, I find J.M.S. did a sterling job on B5. Paramount would have done well to bring him on board. Deep Space 9 could have been Babylon 5, and we wouldn't have Scott going "DS9 wasn't my cup of tea." :) That alone would surely have been worth it? I've said it B4 I know, but B5 is great!

What we were talking about was the planet that B5 is orbiting looks like FP (Altair IV) and the similarity's between the Krell underground machine complex and the "The Great Machine" Sheridan found inside Epsilon III!

Money is the answer to every problem! because it is hard as hell to convince a judge or jury that your idea is yours and original, unless you have conspicuous notes to back up your claim...which most don't! so throw money at it and make it go away.

Thanks William for the updated links...your the best :)

I watched B5 all the way through and only the first season of DS9 because B5 was far Superior then DS9. Paramount screwed up royal for not bring J.M.S. to DS9 or having B5 produced at Paramount! this is what happens when your vision is so narrowed.

I had the best of intentions in my offer to help. But in working on my final research project, roughly 12 hours a day, 5 and 6 days a week, I bit off more than I realized when I made that offer.

Right now I'm taking a lunch "break" between readings of literature reviews and I got this reminder in my email to check this thread.

When I clicked on the link, there's a small box and an interesting message from Mega:

Anybody know what that means? I looked for a key code or whathaveyou on the page 1 thread with the links and didn't see one...

I'll drink a toast to that and the B5 Appreciation Society. In fact you're not the only person I know who gave up on DS9. I too was disappointed at the outset, but as there wasn't much else on tv at the time, I ended up watching the whole lot, and found few good episodes in DS9 which would sit comfortably in the TNG series. From what I recall, some interesting things happened (and this is my opinion), Worf kills Gowron, Worf's brother has a death wish until he's cured by having his memory wiped, O'Brien goes on trial for murder on Cardassia, and in one of my favourite episodes which featured Michael Sarrazin, Bashir finds a cure for a cursed people. Not too shabby, but a shame there's a lot of filler. Oh well, seek and ye shall find - hopefully!.

Actually, I went to edit those links, and they do have at the beginning and at the end, so what is the solution? Perhaps our own resident computer genius "Scotty" can help us out with that.

As for B5, I LOVE IT!!! I do watch the first season, only because I had seen 2-5, and was aware of the people involved in the stories, but I'm not that crazy about the first season, I only really love the shadow wars era, and not too much after that. If you are comparing B5 to FP because of that one scene, in that one episode, do you realize how many Scifi movies have used force-perspective shots like that? It's a fairly common thing to do, with matt paintings like that. But on the whole, there is nothing similar between the two. As for TREK, well, in both FP and some of TOS, the captain gets the girl, see what I mean? Hehehehehehe :)

I love the linkbait on that headline. Most people don't even realize that Foxconn makes more than just Apple stuff:

---

Sony's PlayStation 3, the Nintendo Wii and Amazon's Kindle Fire are just a few of the products Foxconn makes. It also produces TVs for Sony, Sharp, and Toshiba; handsets for Nokia, Motorola and Huawei, and networking equipment for Cisco, according to Arthur Liao, an analyst with Fubon Securities Investment Services Co.

Foxconn is also a major assembler of PCs for Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Acer, and manufactures all three of the big game consoles, from Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony, other analysts said.

Cisco, Huawei, Nintendo, Sony and Nokia all confirmed they use Foxconn as a manufacturer, though Nokia said the "clear majority" of its phones are made in-house. Other firms including Acer, Microsoft, Motorola, Sharp and Toshiba declined to comment about where their products are made.

I actually thought B5 was at its best somewhere in the mid second season through the 4th. The first season and the first few weeks of the second were middling to hideous and the 5th season was just a disappointment (and yeah, I know all the reasons why). However, the final episode (shot a year earlier) was the best SF series finale ever made. JMS was great a crafting story arcs and compelling characters, but his dialog was often corny and over dramatic. Yet, I love the series.

DS9, unlike somma ya, is my second favorite Trek series and the best of the spin offs. The characters were amazing with some of the best actors in the franchise. It was the poor cousin of TNG for whatever reason and far superior to Voyager. The music was generally outstanding.

JMS was better off on his own rather than in the Trek world. He never would have been happy since Rick Berman would have had control over his work.

That's unfortunate, but I don't have anything made at Foxconn. Incidentally, the co-venture with Sharp, is based in Japan, not China. In fact, they have plants in several countries where they are required to adhere to local national laws and regulations. Let's hope they get their act together before re-opening the plant in China.

I like the first season of B5 the best. I'm a Sinclair fan. B5 was/is a great season, and I wish that they would do more, before the actors are gone.

Another series that had the FP inspired shot, was The Time Tunnel Pilot episode. It was the most awesome scene in the episode.

AZsneed, I agree with you about the ending of DS9, I loved the final scene where they showed the station disappearing into the distance but the rest of the episode could have been done much better. With BAB 5 the one thing I thought went to fast was the attack to retake earth after the shadow war was over. I thought they went to fast with both the attack on Mars and Earth in the same episode. The 5th year of BAB5 was alright but was not as good as the others. It seemed less exciting.

I believe the reason was J.M.S. was told the show was going to end, hence the season final "The Deconstruction of Falling Stars" so he had to rap it up in a hurry, but we all know that it went on for another year. Oh I agree season 5 was alright and because most of the characters were either dead (in the show) [Marcus] or had left for other things [Stephen Franklin, Susan Ivanova, Michael Garibaldi, Londo Mollari, G'Kar (I loved that character), The Vorlons, The Shadows] J.M.S. had to be tired, he wrote 92 of the 110 episodes and it showed. There wasn't much left to write about with all your great characters gone or leaving.

Yeah I did the same thing! I just loved Marcus and G'Kar! G'Kar started out as being a pain in the ass, but changed into one of the best characters in the show! so full of life, wisdom, and a man that had your back, his lines were just great...

[Of course. LOVE to say, can't, have to go, kiss-kiss, love-love, bye!",..."It is said that the future is always born in pain. The history of war is the history of pain. If we are wise what is born of that pain matures into the promise of a better world. Because we learn that we can no longer afford the mistakes of the past.",..."It's an Earth food. They are called Swedish meatballs. It's a strange thing, but every sentient race has its own version of these Swedish meatballs! I suspect it's one of those great universal mysteries which will either never be explained, or which would drive you mad if you ever learned the truth."... No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against that power tyrants and dictators cannot stand. The Centauri learned that lesson once. We will teach it to them again. Though it take a thousand years, we will be free."]

That and the interaction between G'Kar, Marcus and Mollari! damn funny moments, heart breaking and so uplifting. I was so saddened when Andreas Katsulas died! For me G'Kar=The Heart of B5, Delenn=The soul, Marcus=The innocence, Michael Garibaldi=The Fists, John Sheridan=The Brains, just my thoughts....good thing I have all 5 years, the movies and direct to DVD movies, maybe I watch them again this weekend.

I also think he made the best Romulan bad guy. I also have the Crusade box set, I thought it was pretty good but maybe the timing of it's release was to close to the end of BAB5 or there was too many sci-fi space series at the time. I've used may types of computer including Macs, but never bought an Apple product either. Yes, bars on windows and suicide nets. At Foxconn, the 'working' week is 12 hours per day for 6 days in a walled city - they're big on walled cities over there. Apple stands out as a real bastard thanks to its amassing of wealth and tax avoidance - even though they have assets of $150 billion they borrow money in order to write off their profits. Maybe I should try that? Oh wait, the government takes their cut before I even see it.

China has become so wealthy thanks to North America and Europe outsourcing much of their manufacturing to China and allowing other Chinese products to pour into their countries to destory jobs at home. Even many key electronics components for America's most advanced weapons systems are made in China. Jeffrey Immelt, CEO of GE, is the head Obama's 'Job Council' while at the same time GE is moving vast amounts of its operations/jobs to China. The USA has also outsourced production and jobs to other parts of the Far East, India and to Mexico. Hundreds of foreign free trade zones are planned to be established in America with special customs facilities for countries like China to locate their companies. One of them, south of Boise, Idaho, could be controlled by the China National Machinery Industry Corp. (Sinomach) if the state gov gets his way. The Chinese Communist government is the majority owner. This would mean that eventually up to 50 square miles of America would be owned by China and they could store military equipment and whatever they want. The Chinese government is also buying huge areas and assets of America including oil and gas fields.

If a new Trek show were to air, I think an update of "The Cloud Minders" story to highlight today's tribulations (no, not tribbles in this one) with respect to global enslavement would be stupendous.

Do they change working conditions? Like hell they do. They put bars on the windows so people can't jump out. Beggars belief. :(

Still, not owned an Apple product in my life, and don't intend to.

Rant over ;)

Oh, yes, ignorant people talking about Foxconn. You do realize that Foxconn works on pretty much EVERY mobile device and laptop out there, right? They don't just work on Apple products. In fact, something you own was probably built there.

The more you know....

Here's a list of major companies that have used Foxconn. I'll bet money you own something made there.

Acer Inc.
Amazon.com
Apple Inc.
Cisco
Dell
Google
Hewlett-Packard
Microsoft
Motorola Mobility
Nintendo
Nokia
Sony
Toshiba

China is a communist country in name only these days. It is now much more of a one party National Socialist dictatorship. Capitalism is allowed and so is private ownership of business with heavy over-site and control by the government and unfortunately plenty of corruption. Some would say it is the worst mixture of socialism and capitalism from the workers point of view. macdev is right about Foxconn, they are into just about every mobile device.

Of course, but China is officially ruled by the 'Communist Party'. It's like saying "Tory Britain".

Some argue the the American Democratic Party is ruled by Socialist-Progressives and the Republican Party is ruled by Tea Party-Conservatives. The communist party is no longer representative of the people running it. Maybe they should change their name to the Socialist Capitalist Pink Party. Change their flag from Red to Pink with a big green dollar sign in the middle-it would be more honest. :)

I don't own any Apple....wait, I'm wrong, I do have an Apple tree out back.

A I-whatever and clones/want to be, are just marketing tools. You are told you got to have one by the companies, you get apps from all kinds of companies and then you buy whatevers. I will never get I-whatevers, Kindle, Android and so forth. I only use a Tracfone as a phone, when I need one when I'm away from home. and landline when home. I use only a PC when I go online (like now). When I am away from home, I want to see the World in person, not on a screen. I prefer to see my friends in person to see what is going on, not Facebook. We are Social creatures, but, Companies are exploiting that part of us for profit.

Scott Adams (Dilbert creator) book I read (real book),he said that Companies sell new products to the stupid rich, until they sell enough to bring the price down to sell to the stupid poor. Well, I'm no longer a Leming. I am tired of getting poorer, so Companies can get richer.

No ethical company exists. They all want to make money, no matter what.

It's not the company, it's the executives that make the decisions. The main job of any company (small mom an pop to Billion dollar corporations) is to make money! with out it you will not stay in business every long, and if you have investors, they want to get paid back! plus your employees want to get paid as well and on and on it goes. Some company's want to be every good stewart's to the planet and the rest of humanity, but no matter what they do, their will always be someone or some group out there that is not going to agree with your business practices and will complain or protest...that is life.

I would not bet on China moving any military equipment to the USA! it would be a little difficult to disguise a Main Battle Tank as say a machine press! or an APC as a rec vehicle! How China could disguise a Dongfeng-41 (DF-41, CSS-X-10) ICBM, which is 49 feet long and 7 feet 5 inch in diameter, weighing 93,000 pounds is beyond me! Now Sinomach my be a Chinese owned company (not much of a difference between owned by a person in China, it is still owned by the Chinese Government) but they will never own US soil, it is illegal (under US Federal Law) for any foreign country to buy or own any land here in the USA, it can be trusted to them (State or Federal land) even Foreign Embassies are under US Federal land control and are granted just trust not ownership, so the US Government can shutdown or close any Embassy it choses or move them to where ever it pleases the Government, and that's the same for any of our Embassies in any foreign country. I assume there employees would be Americans and I could never imagine any American working for a foreign company and seeing any military equipment being assembled, unloaded or just setting around and not say a word about it to the press or their congressmen! "Remember Pearl Harbor"

As I stated, China does not own any land here, it was trusted to some Chinese company (but not owned) the State or Federal Government can take the land back any time it wants to! This is the same for any US company that has business interests in any foreign country! Now personal ownership of property is allowed, but transferring it or selling it can be a royal pain! taxes and the infernal IRS rules will drive any sane person to insanity. I'm sure your Governor will get his/her way! Two things spring to mind, Tax Revenue and Jobs! sad but all so true, but don't hold your breath! The unions in this country will bust Chinas balls first! and end it all.

Scott

p.s. I do own an Apple itouch 5th Generation (had to, my Zune finally quite on me and it is no longer being made) so I bought a new media player and the itouch was the right size (storage capacity) I needed. Itunes sucks (even the 64 bit version) but what can one do? the player sounds great! better then the Zune ever did! And I do demand great sound quality...especially for what it costs.

When theorising one needs to map the envelope. Anyway, keep your eye on the ball and the government :) I know friends with iPhones who aren't too thrilled with what's going on, and due to my naturally benevolent disposition I haven't given them a Glasgow Kiss.

Glasgow Kiss
A headbutt. Within Glasgow itself the term 'Gorbals kiss' is often used, referring to the most dangerous area of Glasgow. It is hypothesised that within Gorbals it is known as a Crown Street kiss; and on Crown Street it is called a Number 73 kiss; and at Number 73 it is known as Steve's kiss. Steve, however, calls it whatever the fuck he wants to.

I know, I'm a dirty old man! :) (least that's what my wife says, every time I ask for sex!) (I'm a sex object, every time I ask my wife for sex, she objects!!!) :)

Went to the Disneyland park over the weekend, and noticed a couple of things. First, I noticed they had a ton of stuff on all the princess' but nothing on Gieselle! Secondly, all of the items I picked up, and looked at the price tag on the bottom, also had "made in China" stamped on it. I asked one of the cast members why that was, and she informed me that 72% of all Disney stock is owned by Chinese corporations! The new park in Hong Kong would not have opened otherwise! They are controlling the whole Disney (AND Marvel comics) from the inside, and I thought that Disney owns ABC corporation? There's an American federal law that states that NO foreign company or corporation could own any American radio or TV station, or publishing company! Isn't that a violation of this FEDERAL law???

I have always kept both eyes on my Government (both Federal, State, City and County) I have never trusted any Government as far as I can throw them! Power corrupts absolutely!!

I like the Glasgow kiss :) but it is to much physical contact for my tastes! (I was trained and have seen it way to many times, that the transfer of bodily fluids from someone you do not know is a killer) I personally prefer a Colt M1911A1 45 to reach out and touch someone and permanently put them down. My oldest son has a iphone 5c and I told him about the news about foxxcon, it did not seem to phase him much, he just went on about how nice the phone was! and people wonder why this world is going to hell in a hand bag.

It is indeed William! and Disney does own ABC! I bet they own "Common Stock" not the "Preferred Stock"! Preferred stock is (rights to their share of the assets of the company) the Disney family, Steve Jobs, George Lucas and whoever else is on the board of directors own Preferred Stock! Common Stock is for us Common folks...aka peons! All foreign investments or control of an American Company has to be approved by the SEC (Security Exchanged Commission) and of course, all it takes to kill the deal is one Congressmen to voice outrage and the party is over.

I stand Ashamed for not saying one word of that Great Document! I am with you 110 percent Spectre! I have always believed that if it is not in the Constitution then it is UN-Constitutional and should be shut down. I could never be Socialist or Communist! I love my freedom way to much and have no desire to rule over anyone or make every decision that effects someone else's life's. The real sad part is most of the people that vote have the IQ of a rock and have no idea what they are voting for, just as long as they get free stuff! there is noting free in this country, someone has to pay for it! and I am tired of paying for others, I have my own family to take care of!

I don't see it either, personally I see it going to just one man rule! and that will lead down a road that will get bloody! the only thing that will save our butts is the 22nd Amendment! which if it is good enough for the highest office in the land, it is good enough for Congress! The pursuit of power, money and those that think humankind has to be controlled (either through fear or religious doctrine i.e. either believe as we do or die! history is replete with people like this and are still around) is the reason we will never see the Star Trek world come to be. It would require the total destruction of all religion! and that will never happen and would require the loss of hundreds of millions of life's! it would make the Second World War look like a picnic and someone that has nuclear weapons would use them! sooner rather then later and that my friends would be the end.

It appears that the Constitution is viewed as an old piece of paper, out of date and in the way by the Progressive Democrats. POTUS - Obama said so himself (negative liberties) I took an oath many years ago to defend the Constitution and still stand by it. Many in government have taken the same oath and unfortunately it appears that it was only empty words to them. They are only interested to personal gain and power. Both parties have let the people down, right now I sense more danger to our country from the left than the right. As an independent I have no faith in either party and vote for who is the best man for the job. Maybe if the majority was to become independent and open minded we could some day see a future like Star Trek envisions.

Fact is it's good for one thing, controlling the population, feeling more inslaved by the moment. BTW max "Obama said so himself (negative liberties) I took an oath many years ago to defend the Constitution and still stand by it. Many in government have taken the same oath and unfortunately it appears that it was only empty words to them. Socialist party controlled Greece for 30 years making it a "workers paradise" Socialism is great until you run out of other peoples money to spend (Margaret Thatcher) Greece has now run out of money and is up to it's eye balls in dept and sinking fast just like Italy, Spain and Ireland and most of southern Europe. Progressives ignore these facts and scream social justice. Lets keep spending, there is no debt crisis as long as China keeps buying our bonds. Communism and Socialism ideals look great on paper but don't work, over time the people in power become power hungry, the more power the more corrupt. Absolute power corrupts absolutely is so true, that's what the Constitution protects us against- too much power in to few hands without checks and balances. So many people are willing to put their party's interest and power ahead of their country's needs today. The majority of people will not value freedom until they lose it and then it will take 50 years on average before they see it again.

If the Constitution is just a piece of paper, then so is the Communist Manafesto, so is the law, and it would be a mistake to accept that. Can't have it both ways. I feel bad for those around the world who live under heavy Socialism or Comunism, when you talk to people around the world they say they hate it, and have even given warning to supposed free people not to make the same mistake, and that includes National Socialism or Fascism. I just want to be left alone to make my own decisions. Anyone seeing the Real News out there, Hiring police to keep people out of parks? How can they afford that but not park personel? I don't know where you got that idea from: "the idea that Windows as an operating system is somehow comparable to Apple as a company is the height of nonsensical 'reasoning'". I don't recall anyone knocking the Mac's o/s, but I will be a little later on. Apple doesn't own Foxconn, so it should be easy to ditch and contract to another supplier. Never mind the introduction of a sham labour monitoring agency agreed by Apple and Foxconn, psychopaths or no, Apple needs to take care of its own brand name - it's not rocket science. There are many firms in China (if it has to be in China) who don't have issues like Foxconn. I think the two will be parting company soon anyway. From what I read, there will be a falling out when Foxconn starts marketing its own brand of TV in direct competition to the Apple iTV. I believe I also stated that Windows was shocking compared to all other systems in the 80s/better part of the 90s. There you go, I've been kind - rest in peace Steve Jobs. Also, a general comparison was made between IBM PC-compatibles and the Apple Mac, and advantages/disadvantages of both were explored. As I can't run the software I need on a Mac, and having better things to do than fiddle with a fancy desktop, it falls to Windows and the PC architecture.

I'm with you on the Constitution bit. It seems more and more 'leaders' of the world are introducing new b***s*** laws to suit themselves and their cronies. I like the idea of taking freedoms away in exchange for security - now that's the height of nonsensical 'reasoning'.

Have a nice day, LDMartin1959.

First off, the ORIGINAL constitution, with all the signatures, was discovered during the Lincoln years, by a maid, sitting in a closet in the white house! Lucky for us that it didn't get destroyed when the white house was set on fire! Secondly, nearly every president has been a member of the ACLU, except Bush and Bush!!!! And if that isn't a kick in the balls of America, I don't know what is.

Yes we're talking about the Network Heads for killing the TV show Franchise. Next they'll sell it to Disney. We're plotting to stop them and maybe get a gutt kick or two in on Eisner and Donald and wake Walt up from his Cryo-chamber.

Lol. Since I started open-carrying a Nerf, nobody messes with me anymore. Before I had it under my jacket, but the 'bulge' wasn't noticeable, which led me into an altercation with a bozo. He tried to sell me some broadband on the street. I whipped out my trusty Nerf 9mm and got him it the head. He went down like a sack of potatoes. But got up quickly realising he wasn't hurt at all. Anyway, he didn't catch me, as I started running as soon as I'd fired off the shot.

From what I have found and this is from The National Archives "The Constitution. The Constitutional Convention met in Philadelphia during the summer of 1787, and on September 16 - 17, 1787, Jacob Shallus, an assistant clerk of the Pennsylvania State Assembly, engrossed the Constitution on four parchment sheets. Delegates signed it on page four, and George Washington and William Jackson, the president and secretary of the convention, signed a fifth page, called the Resolution of Transmittal. The Constitution, like the Declaration, passed to the custody of the Department of State in 1789, moved with the government, and was evacuated to Leesburg in 1814. The Constitution was never exhibited, and there are only a few mentions of it in the historical record." You can read the whole article here Prologue: Current Issue (http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2002/winter/travels-charters.html)

BTW the Original Constitution is 5 single sheets of parchment (sheepskin) each sheet is 28 3/4 inches by 23 5/8 inches! not a small set of documents that's for sure.

It would seem that some maid in the White House discovered it in a closet is just one of those story's that never die.

As for the ACLU, the ACLU started in 1920, so not every President could have been a member, your talking from Harding (1921) to Obummer! (2013) the only two I am aware of that might have been would be President Carter (or as I call him peanut head, pretty sad for a sub driver) and Obummer!

No reason to apologize Spectre! What Bin Should be Kicked in the Balls Biden means, no democrats care anymore! and that is very evident.

I watched Obama Bin Laying this morning and wanted to put my foot through my TV when he said "He was willing to compromise but not negotiate" What the hell does that mean! In other words "It's my way or the highway" well that's BS plan and simple, lets not forget the Democrats have not passed a Budget in 5 years! and here is the other one "Raising our debit ceiling does not rise our debit and does not add one dime to our national debit" What the *uck!!!! then way do you want the debit raised? and where did this *ssclown learn his economic reasoning! all of us have to live with in our won budget! so why can't he....damn! and we have three more years, sometimes I wonder if we will ever last that long.

Until the majority wakes up and understands what is happening nothing really will change. Most of the news services are left leaning and don't tell the people what is going on. Most of the people could care less until it harms them and many are completely clueless.

The Republicans want to cut spending they say. When it came to fund the Military lately, they wanted to increase spending for weapons not needed or wanted and the Defense Department was wondering what their problem was, they were going to cut cost not increase them.

The shutting down of the Government was done by the Republicans and the Tea Party terrorist, to kill Obamacare. NOW it is about spending, what is their problem.

And, on a local note, a Republican candidate for Alabama Lt. Governor next year says he would be in favor of some version of “home rule,” a policy that could allow local governments, such as my County Commission, to decide on their own funding. Currently, many decisions that affect only one county have to be passed by the full state Legislature. The inability to pass a tax increase has been pointed to by the County Commission as a reason government services in the county haven’t improved. In other words, this Republican candidate does not want the people to vote on a tax, let the Commission decide what is best for us.
And, they say that they are against taxes.

As much as a lot of people might think that the Republicans are looking out for us, it is about votes and control. Now, of course, the Democrats are no better, but, we know that.

Also, I heard that my House Representativehttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/lloyd2/roflao.gif will not seek re-election. I'm thrilled, as I voted against him last time to get rid of a career Washington leech. I voted against one Senator and next year will vote against the other. That is real term limits, vote the leeches out, but, the fools keep re-electing them, and then complain they are not doing their job.

I Have had it with this dickweed obama, this is the freaking last damn straw!!

"The Pentagon has confirmed that it will not pay death benefits to the families of troops killed in combat during the so called government shutdown. With Obama's recent startling admission that he won't approve any measures to partially restore suspended government payments for purely political reasons, that puts the blame for this outrage squarely on his shoulders.

"Unfortunately, as a result of the shutdown, we do not have the legal authority to make death gratuity payments at this time," said Lt. Cmdr. Nate Christensen, a Defense Department Spokesman. "However, we are keeping a close eye on those survivors who have lost loved ones serving in the Department of Defense."

The House intends to vote Wednesday to restore funding for the payments. Speaker John Boehner has accused the Obama administration "of needlessly withholding the money." Over the weekend, four soldiers -- two of them Army Rangers -- and one Marine were killed while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan. The bodies of the four soldiers will be returned to Dover Air Force Base on Wednesday.

Due to the impasse, the families of 25-year-old 1st Lt. Jennifer M. Moreno; 24-year-old Pfc. Cody J. Patterson; 24-year-old Special Agent Joseph M. Peters; 25-year-old Sgt. Patrick C. Hawkins; and 19-year-old Lance Cpl. Jeremiah M. Collins, Jr. will not receive the $100,000 payment that they would have otherwise received within three days of the death.

Adding further insult, the families will have to pay for their own travel to Dover. That's a bill the Pentagon also says it can't pay because of the partial shutdown.

Privately, Defense Department officials say they wish they could pay the families and they admit it's a disgrace that deserves national attention.
Boehner claimed a bill passed by Congress and signed by the president last week to pay America's troops should have given the Pentagon the latitude "to pay all kinds of bills, including this."

They gave their full measure for there Country, not the damn Government and this is what they get? IMPEACH the bastard!!

This is pure propaganda from media. They are trying to make the Republicans look good and Obama evil, by finding anyone whom will talk to them, and support their view. Sure people are suffering, but, enough is enough! The Republicans caused this shutdown to force Obama to revoke Obama care, that is at first, now it is again, budget cuts and a last ditch effort to keep their jobs in the House. Obama is right, if you give into blackmail now, it will be used in the future. This whole incident is just plain wrong. The Republicans tried, what...40 time to revoke Obama care knowing full well the Democrats in the Senate would throw it in the trash. They wasted so much time playing games, just to destroy Obama's term. A petty ploy that both parties stoop low to do all of the time.

This is just to gain points with Republican die hard voters, and they hope other voters will side with them blaming Obama. Also, trying to piecemeal the bills to fund agencies to address complaints from the people, like the Parks, are again just to get brownie points with the people in hopes to vote for them next year.

Hehe. As an outside observer, I can't see how the Democrats are any different to the Republicans, especially on the war front, financial system and human rights. In Britain we also have a left-wing and a right-wing in name only to which I don't subscribe to either of. There is a chasm, or a dead-zone if you like, between where we are now and a flawed, but nevertheless entertaining ideal created by Roddenberry.

Apparently you have not be listening for the last 5 years! First the Democratic controlled Senate has not past a budget in 5 years, even thou the House has sent one over every year, for the last 2 years! so in the mean time Congress has been funding the Government with CR (Continuing Resolution's). Second, ACA (Affordable Health Care) Act (aka Obamacare) was jammed down our throat's (remember Nancy Pelosi famous line "We have to pass it (ACA) before you can see what's in it"), Remember all the town hall meetings Senators had and people were mad as hell! Remember the 2011 Election when Old Botox face had to give up her speaker seat because the Democrats lost the House! Third, Have you even read the 1,000 page monstrosity? I would highly recommend you read the thing and see for yourself what a piece of crap it really is! The Republican party lost its ass in 2011 and the TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party kicked the crap out of the Grand Old Party and for good reason too. This is not about Brownie Points! This about OUR Government telling us what to do! and spending Trillions of Dollars (we do not have) on a health care law that is nothing but a albatross around our necks, do you know that every illegal alien (even those that have over stayed there visa's) in this country will now be covered under ACA? and us tax payers are going to foot the bill! It is estimated that 30 million people will have to be covered! Your talking about Trillions of tax payer dollars every year! A Majority of voters in this country did not ask or even want this health care law. Fourth, This not the first time in our country's history Republicans or Democrats have de-funded a law that was totally crap! There are several laws on the books that are not enforced because of no money! My 86 year old mother has COPD and Asthma, she takes Advair and Albuterol (both inhaler's) I had to have her Advair refilled (normally it runs about $50.00 for a month supply) I got called yesterday and told the price is $285.00 plus tax for thirty days worth! I went and talked to her pharmacists and his assistant about why the price had gone up! Guess what I found out! Surprise, Surprise, because of the ACA law, then I called her HMO and was told the same thing! Will, after I told my mother why it was so high, she has decided to not take it anymore! my mother was never asked if she want this God fulfill law and she is a Democrat!

Let me give you a little advise from a old retired Law Enforcement Officer laddy! Never!, Ever!, put a gun to my head to try and force me to do anything! because you'll only have one option! i do not trust politics or politicians, political parties or people with power, as power in the long run irresistibly corrupts, in my opinion.
BUT
I trust people. individuals.
(Of course there are a lot of individual idiots around, no doubt)

we can change things, starting small, getting bigger. I still believe that.
I might not live to see it though, as these things usually take longer than one life-span ;)

It wont happen! simply because the drug market is going to start acting just like the stock market! plus they have to recoup R&D costs, because of all the new regulations placed on them. I have what is called a Cadillac insurance plan! so I can opt out of ACA, which I have! but I still have to pay for some of my medications! you tax payers (because of our union contract with the county I worked for) signed it and now your stuck paying for it! and I can tell you that we are going to use every damn dime we can. My retirement has been removed from CalPERS and is setting way away from California and the USA (since they [California] are at least $265 billion, and perhaps $737 billion in debt, both greater than official state reports suggest.) and that my friend is what Democrats have done to the once Golden State.

Never will happen! Know the law, is to understand how the law works.

There is something else most people don't think of! there is estimated to be 34 million Combat Veterans in the United States (2011) and another 10 to 15 million retied Police Officers in the USA for a total of 45 to 50 million men and woman that have been under combat conditions, trained in military tactics, using military weapons and are not afraid to use them again to restore our Republic.

Amen Brother!

So if Code Pink or any other *ussy gun control freak, anti-American Capitalist wants to take us on...PLEASE...PLEASE MAKE OUR DAY!

Scott

I'll never understand how governments, and states in your case, can get into so much debt. As far as I can understand (I'm not too up on these things), the Fed is printing money non-stop (something like $40 billion a month), in an attempt to weaken the dollar and therefore effectively reduce the debt by simply devaluing it, but at the same time screwing savers. We had a bout of QE too, but at least it was limited so far to around 150 billion. Nasty. I'm sure that's going to have an effect on just about all prices and living standards.

If Obama is a code pink (lol!) shouldn't you be saddling up?! Anyway, don't get into any trouble, mate. Seriously!

You know this is all a moot subject. WE have no control over OUR Government, and if you think so, you are a fool. Elections are a waste. We are conned with all of the ads, and lies to elect or re-elect people who only are after money and power. We are conne into picking one party over another, and they laugh at us for the fools we are. Besides, whom ever can raise the most is the winner, not the best choice, if there is really one.

One Congress member stated the truth, they know what is best, and they will do what what they want. And, why not, we do not have control over them. Sure, we say kick them out, by electing someone else next election, but, the damage is done. Also, if THE PEOPLE were really pissed about Obama Care, why was Obama re-elected? Obama Care could have been destroyed with a Republican President and Congress, so what happened?

As for taxpayers, they don't exist. I have never paid any taxes in my life. The taxes were taken from us, first in our check, then when we spend, and once a year when Income taxes are due. Have you ever told the person at the check out, that you will pay for your purchase, but, will not give anymore for taxes? If you try, you will not leave the store with your purchase. If you don't give them taxes for your house, you lose it. If you don't get a tag and give them taxes, you WILL pay more in fines, and so on. You see, they take the money, under penalty of law, no choice, and the money becomes theirs to do as they want. They lie to us to think that we have a say, and use us to help them, by saying that they are wasting OUR tax dollars.

Bottom line, we are conned and lied to, for their personal gain of power and wealth.

I never said I was a democrat. People usually just assume this when I post something bashing Republicans. I'm an independent progressive, for the record. The dems are merely the lesser of two evils in our two-party corporate oligarchy.

But in fairness, it is the Republican controlled House of Reps that shut down the Gov't. The Prez does not have the power to do this, even if he wanted to. So I get a little peeved when I see people blaming Obama for every shithead move the government as a whole makes. I don't always agree with the man, but in this particular scenario, he is not the aggressor, not the terrorist, not the instigator. Let's face it, the Kochs are using the GOP to do this to punish the American public for reelecting Obama. The Affordable Care Act is LAW now. It is beginning to become more and more popular with the public. The GOP reeks of desperation. This is a childish and desperate move, a last ditch effort to derail "obamacare" on their part and we mustn't blame Obama for the fallout from what they have started. Bush stands his ground, he is admired and respected for it. Obama stands his ground, the same people liken him to Hitler and Stalin and call him a stubborn ass.

Come on, anyone with a brain knows this goes higher than corporations, Banks, the World Bank, keep fallowing the money now, The Ashters, the Rothchilds, keep going. What's the richest entity on this plannet? What's the Golden Rule? Corporations, Fascism, Communism are only the means to an end, total control! and if you think one or the other is the solution, who's kidding who? Yes the crap starts at the top and just keeps rolling down on us, and people are waking up. There's two kinds of people in this world, those that are asleep and those that are awake. Those with loaded gun and those who dig, you dig?
Blondie! you know what you are? just a dirty son of a...

Star Trek is a nice idea, but it's based on at least 95% of the people being noble and doing their share. The real world isn't like that, and (The real power that be making the rules) having the goverments forcing them isn't the solution. That wouldn't be my idea of Star Trek.

I'm well aware of the influence of the "inner circle" or whatever you choose to call it. You're basically agreeing with me and don't even realize it. I said you can't just get rid of all of the elected and appointed officials in public office because their corporate masters would just buy whoever replaced them. I should've been more clear and I apologize, but I meant that to include people like the Kochs, Soros, Rothschilds, etc

Sounds familiar. Believe it or not, the previous government here wanted to abolish Habeas corpus. Luckily sense prevailed, although trial by jury has been reduced. The current government is hoping to pull out of the European Human Rights charter - and it's not clear what the full outcome of that will be.

The previous government started privatising the NHS by stealth, and the current one is doing it more openly - but essentially it's the same result. Richard Branson, again believe it or not, owns a chain of surgeries. Unfortunately, they are run appallingly badly, and quite often a doctor is unavailable. The tax payer has been well and truly screwed.

Like some people they spend more then they take in, and just pass the problem to the next administration, but now it has reached the breaking point! to tell you the truth, it is called "Unfunded Liability's" which are promises they make to the unions, such as higher pay, better health insurance, higher retirement (like when I worked for the County they took out so much from our pay check every two weeks and the County promised to match the same amount, then doubled it, so by the time you worked 20 years you would have half a million dollars in your retirement account) it all sounds great on paper but when you have 8,000 employees and some of them (Department Heads) making 300,000 to 400,000 a year! (of course salary's have gone way up since my time) it does not take a genius to figure out there is no way in hell the County could ever cover those amounts...your talking in the hundreds of millions of dollars a year! today it is in the billions of dollars! and all so the Deputy Sheriffs Union supports and votes for them, along with SEIU (which is the biggest union of any Department in the County and throughout the State) and you times that by 478 Cites and Towns in the State Of California, plus all the different unions in the state and you have one big cluster *uck! of course all those cites and towns do not have the money at the time to pay into your retirement account, so the state takes IOU's from the city or county! and when you retire you have two options, 1: leave you money in your account or 2: withdraw it, and run like hell! the cites, all 50 States and the Federal Government do the same thing!!! JUST BRILLIANT!!! I took option 2!

In the 15 years I was a Law Enforcement Officer I never got into trouble! I swore a oath 15 years ago to protect and defend my Country, County and State and I sill live by it...I have learned three lessons 1: keep my powder dry 2: never go off half cocked! 3: Think before you engage your target, then kill him or her (Law Enforcement Officers are trained that when you unholster your weapon, you fire it and fire it to kill period! you do not wave it around, it's not a toy). Those lessons have saved my life more times then I can count and a few sorry individuals learned the hard way.

If England (and I do love your Country, we both speak a common language [with Benny Hill, DW, Monty Python, Peter Sellers and so many others) and most of our people came from Merry old England [including my mothers side] and share a long friendship, you guys are one of our most important Ally's we have ever had) leaves the European Union, I think it would be the best thing that could happen! Europe is just dragging England down, you have stood on your two feet for what 500 years? and never took any crap off of anyone! including us. There are two other people that I love and respect as much as I do President Reagan..."Winston Churchill" and "Margaret Thatcher" [The Iron Lady] those two alone are worth keeping England Free from the Union, plus Geoff Love :)

John McCain is a idiot! and just another reason I no longer support the Republican Party....Shara Palin is a beautiful, intelligent woman and could kick the snot out of McCain, with one hand tied behind her back.

That's pretty easy to answer my friend! who would you vote for? the person that said "If I am elected I'll keep your welfare going and not only that I'll increase it and add a ton of free stuff" or the person that says "If I'm elected I will cut the welfare rolls, cut back on food stamps and they will not get any free stuff at the tax payers expense"? there is a old saying my dad used use on new Officers "If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit" obama eyes are brown for a reason! and there are more people on some form of government aid then in the history of this country! something like 100 million people! did you know welfare is the second highest tax supported program! the highest is DoD! now I can live with the DoD, but not HHS! which is Un-Consitiutional to begin with! the Constitution says "Promote The General Welfare" Not Support! and then you add another 100 million stupid white people that believed that "Hope and Change" shit! and 50 to 60 million Hispanics...walla! you have a community organizer (that surrendered his law license, unknown why he had the file sealed [his wife gave up hers too, for unknown reasons], along with all his collage records [the first President to do so], pass port records and anything else that the people could have used to find out who he is) become President! and then you throw in John McCain (what a asshat, someone should have buried him in the desert years ago) and then put the main stream media in his back pocket, plus every damn union in this country and you have a winner. So how is that Hope and Change working out for you all? you can keep the hope, I'll take the change. Oh and lets not forget all the promises he made to the Hispanics about legalizing all the illegals [any were from 12 to 30 million], and all the other groups out there.

The main reason he won is people with the same attitude as yourself! "Why Vote, it is not going to change a thing" well it sure did and here we are 5 years latter and this Country is ready to fall over the cliff! I'll tell you this, if this Country falls, the whole world will go with us, and if you think World War II was bad! it will make it look like a small scuffle, compared to what will happen next! millions upon millions if not hundreds of millions will die! diseases, famine, no person of any color other then white will live (in this Country) [you have never seen the inside of a prison! trust me white supremacists are very much alive, inside and outside] and that's just for starters, if there is a Nuclear Exchange all bets are off! Find a very deep hole to crawl into and pray.

My personal opinion is "If you did not vote, then you have given up your right to complain."

Obama's no socialist. If anything, he's far more in line with the moderates that used to dominate the Republican party before the right wing nuts took over in the 90's. The last truly liberal president we had was, believe it or not, Richard Nixon. Well, more liberal than any president since, at least.

Really! I would love to hear your definition of what a Conservative is?

I have no idea how old you are, but I would hazard a guess, you where not even around when President Nixon was in office! If Richard Milhous Nixon was a moderate then why in hell was he forced to resign from office? [for a simple B&E he was not even apart of the crime!, oh and by the way, no one died in Watergate] when Obama is still in office for covering up Benghazi? [4 Americans DEAD! and one year later the family's still have not heard the truth on how there loved ones died or have we...you know, President Obama Boss's!] And No I do not believe you one bit, simple because I was very much around when President Nixon was in office, during Watergate and after. I think what you are is confused about a President that knows a Republic is run on "Compromise" or "Negotiating" to a President that will not do either one! That is NOT even close to what a true President does! Hell even Slick Willy compromised.

I almost forgot! your post #5679 I hate to bust your bubble, but The President does have the power to cause a Government shut down, it's called "Veto" [Latin for "I forbid"] If a bill is passed and sent to the President he can veto the bill and send it back to the Senate, where the Senate would have to get two-thirds majority of the Senate to override The President veto, if they could not get two-thirds majority vote, then the bill is dead, Government shutdowns and Congress would have to start over. Yes we all know that ACA is LAW! but that does not forbid The House or Senate or even the voters from defunding a law that is junk, unworkable and just fiscally unsound and a Majority of the population do not want. I wish you would answer one question for me! If ACA is so great why has The Senate and The Executive Branch [President, Presidential Staff, including there family's] exempt themselves from ACA?

Do you even know that Democrats were what the Republican party is today? you should read a little more history! because you would find out that Democrats was the Conservative Party at one time [1930's] until about the 1970's when they switched to liberal [to pull more blacks into there party]. Do you even know that it was the Democrats that tried there damnedest to fight against the Voters Right Act of 1965? it was the Republican Party that passed that Act! and it was a Republican President [Abraham Lincoln] that signed the Emancipation Proclamation [Executive Order] And it was the Republican Party that passed the 13th Amendment (Section 1 Freedom from Slavery) [1865] and the 14th Amendment [1868]. You do know that President Roosevelt was a Democrat when WWII started, and "Give Them Hell" Harry Truman that dropped the 2 nuclear bombs on Japan [saving over 2 million American lives], fought the Communists in Korea! Hell the KKK was started by a Southern Democratic General [Nathan Bedford Forrest], The NRA was started to help blacks protect themselves against the KKK by teaching them how to fire a weapon and selling them weapons and ammunition, because no one else would help them....You really need to get a better education.

I'm with you, Sir AZSneed! [Runs to his harpsicord and begins to play the tune of Glorious Tribble Hunt]

Let the hunt begin. TALLY-HO!!!

And please, dear Sirs: let the political talk behind you, it's all so very depressing, all this nonsense talk. Let's live here and now, and HAVE SOME FUN!!! :)

We CAN'T sing that song, because Shatner's hairpiece gets emotionally involved everytime we do! Hehehehehehehe :)

And, Lydecker, I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it! (seriously)

I'm working on the STTMP movie sound effects by Alan Howarth as well, with new art. I will be posting them here soon!

Can't wait William, but i guess i will. Hey does Kirk yelling Khaaaaaan!!!!!!!!!!!!!! count as a Sound Effect? It makes a great distraction when someone's hunting for you. Especially when speeded up at varying amounts, it confuses the hell out of 'em, and slowing it down scares the hell out of 'em.

Kirk: "KHAAAAAAAAANNNNN!!!!!"

Khan: "What now Kirk? Stop whining, will you!

Kirk:"Butttt, I want my Genisis device back....NOooooowwww!"

Khan: "You tasks me! You tasks me, and I shall keep it!"

Kirk: "Noooo....I want it baccckkkk!"

I think Shatner and Doug McClure went to the same school for actors, but Shatner dropped out after the first day of Introduction to Cavemen 101. The day was spent on the motivation of "what would you do if a giant dinosaur was trying to step on you" hence the twitching on the floor, moaning and whining. Also included was how would you react to a giant dinosaur yelling in your ear and a 90 year old cavewoman changing her clothing. "That completes my acting knowledge needed for anything i do" stated Shatner
I think he thought it was a one day course. Doug McClure dropped out after the next day when the day was spent on "How to Dress like a Trucker"

Well, I wouldn't mind at all, sounds nice to me. That number, however, to me at least, sounds alot like a BORG catalogue number for your species, ("Species8750"), so the next question would be: Have you been assimilated already by the Borg, and if so, are we safe here on the board anymore??? who was the only actor to be in the movie and TV show?)

Answer:

There were four actors who appeared in both the M*A*S*H movie and the TV series. Two of them who maintained the same roles were:
•Gary Burghoff (Radar O'Reilly)
•G. Wood (Brigadier General Hammond)

The other two who were in both but took on different roles were:
•Timothy/Tim Brown (Corporal Judson in the film and Spearchucker Jones in the series)
•John Fujioka (an uncredited Japanese Golf Pro in the film, and in three different episodes as three different characters - Colonel Kim, Duc Phon Jong and a peasant)

I obviously cheated

M*A*S*H, Now that brings back memories, I loved to watch it with my parents. My father and mother were medics during the Korean War. They didn't talk much about the war until I was older. The operating rooms were very accurate in the show, my father would help preform surgery with a doctor looking over his shoulder-he was very good with his hands and the army wanted to send him to medical school to become doctor. He started out in the infantry as a medic, he was so good at fixing up the wounded that they moved him to the operating room where he met my mother.
