I'm gone for awhile and come back to find I missed all the fireworks too, I think that may be a good thing also. One of the most dangerous calls a cop can go on is a "family fight" or domestic disturbance. I don't miss going to them so I not sad I miss whatever happened here. Hope no one was hurt-peace and love to all.

On a STAR TREK note ...

Right now I've been browsing through the 1979 book Star Trek Speaks, which you guys may remember was an attempt to break down bits from the TV scripts into categories such as "War and Peace" -- "Emotion and Logic" -- and lots of cringingly dumb statements about man-woman interactions.

It's easier to pass over these lines when watching an episode. Seeing some of them in print, cut up separately, really makes you marvel at statements such as

"Extreme feminine beauty is always disturbing" -- Spock, in "The Cloud Minders"
"That unit is a woman." -- "A mass of conflicting impulses." -- Spock and Nomad, "The Changeling"

JOKE MODE:
Of course, every word I say is complete in itself, and could never be misinterpreted as an insult!

SELECTIVE QUOTE OF THE PREVIOUS SENTENCE: "...Every word I say is ... an insult!" -- see what I did there?
END JOKE MODE

This book was one of about a thousand released to try and tie in with the media frenzy over ST:TMP. I believe Pocket Books launched its "Timescape" SF paperback line with STAR TREK books.

Any other STAR TREK thoughts? Favorite or silly lines from episodes?

Now you've made me curious... what's this "Thunder Edition"? I have both the stereo and surround rip of the SACD. How is this different? :)

theone2000
06-17-2014, 02:40 PM
Ok. This started off as an idea I had a while ago, but only got around to doing something about it last night while watching the footy and drinking beer. I know, I'm a hooligan. Long story short, I wanted the Nemesis soundtrack to have impact like when I saw the film. So, this is a home-brew 5.1 mix, where I set up the sound to give the subwoofer a proper work-out. "Thunder Edition" is simply the lack of a better term! As some contributors here have put together various compilations, I thought that sharing this might also make for an interesting diversion now that the Festival seems to be over. xD

If you've got the SACD, you probably won't find anything of interest in this DIY knock-off unless you fancy something a bit louder :) Anyhoo, the audio is AC-3 and muxed into an MKV file with blank video. This means you should be able to plug a USB stick into your TV/Blu-ray/Media player and be off!

It seems so insane, because he has proven his worth to all of us here, giving us items that nobody on any other site had, and with him working in the movie business, having many very important contacts, does it seem wise to have done this to him? I think you need to be briefed. I quite enjoyed his input and I certainly wasn't complicit in driving him away, neither were most others at this thread. However, I do believe you missed something which could not be categorised as trivial BS by any stretch of the imagination. Had he not stepped on that land mine of his own accord, regardless of how much he was being denigrated (and it was denigration), he wouldn't have be up shit creek as he is now. I've just looked back - it certainly took long enough for the mods to correct the matter.

No one got together over it. I confronted him, I made an issue. You have a problem with my decision feel free to write me. I know of no one else actively involved in the dispute.

---------- Post added at 12:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:48 PM ----------

You could always contact Greg and ask him what's up personally. Just a thought. I do not think the lack of any new shares is an issue? There really is nothing to post. You can have a bunch of unreleased stuff, but there is only so much and once it is shared, that's pretty much that. Same with official releases. I don't think the basics of this thread revolve around who has or has not posted what? If that is all you see then you have really missed the gist of, well, everything here. And THAT, sir, is a true disservice to your friend.

@Scott

there was denigration (@theone, i did not know that word, learned something again, thx) all around. William/Greg was not the only one concerned, at least in my opinion. communication got out of hand. Maybe things can calm down again for all concerned.
what goes around....
and sorry, i feel the word "gang-banged" is not really adequate. Although I appreciate your concern for a friend.
And i do not doubt for him, it might have felt that way.

i do not doubt that everybody feels a bit sorry for the way things got out of hand. sometimes a break can be a healthy thing.
we can give it time.
sometimes, "never" coming back is shorter than expected ;)
Must have something to do with Einsteins relativity theory, or the way space bends around transwarp, or whatever.... :D

PS: shares were not the issue indeed.
communication or: style of communication was.

I have no idea what you are talking about. Greg only said what we all felt at that time, and he was right about it. Kirk101 has left this thread, swearing never to come back on a daily basis. He's yanked his links to the stuff that he's posted here, and in other threads, so that people can't enjoy what he is supposed to be sharing. These types of mind games is very confusing to me and others, and Greg had just voiced our frustration, rightfully so! Yes, he's a friend of mine, and I really hope that he will come back to the site, and continue running this thread. We cannot allow any usurper to come in here, causing trouble like he has. And I am really disappointed that more people have not come forward to stand up to this BS, but instead wanted to stay in the background or stay off of the site altogether. very disappointing.

This is freakin me out cause up until the blow up I didn't see anything happen that warranted what followed. I don't care if someone posts, then pulls their posts, or threatens to leave everyday, It shouldn't become what it did, rather we might ask what's the problem or even have a laugh, but dang people, we can do better then this. Hopefully it's over and no-one will hold to much of a grudge after cooling down a little, and move on. I understand the frustrations with activities causing ill will, but we can do better than total melt downs. I know how hard it can be sometimes to keep that cool. I'm not on anyone's side, but I've seen bad loosing it happen that shouldn't. It's an Illogical way to put out a fire by using gas, especially if it's just a little match. V
Sorry am I being really redundant again.

Also I want to make it clear that I'm saying I wouldn't stick up for You guys. I just didn't see anything worth the meltdown that happened. Like sorei said, some bad communication.

I am not sure who is at fault for this "domestic dispute" since I am only now starting to go over all the entries. Even if I have an opinion when I'm done as to who is at fault I think I will keep it to myself. I think it is best for us to move on and allow healing to take place. I hope there is no permanent damage done here. I do have one question to ask everyone, "could it be that we have grown so old that we lost our sense of humor?"

for me please replicate coffee, not tea, but otherwise i fully agreee :D

my experience tells me that it usually it is not helpful at all to try to find a so called "guilty part" to "blame", as there is no such thing, everybody involved is responsible (which is quite a different thing than "guilty"), and it is way more interesting what we learn from it in future (i still think we are able to learn, call me optimist) than starting a second war trying to find the guilty one (who does not exist) we can blame for the first one.

everybody here considers himself/herself to be reasonable, (partly) intelligent human being (or: gentlebeing, as in treknovels)

I like your approach very much, sounds reasonable to me. I think the term "responsibility" does hit the target most: We all - myself included! - are responsible more or less for what happened here (by saying things, even by NOT saying things and keeping quiet - both can be responsible OR irresponsible, it always depends!). So to bring this to an end, I would suggest for all of us to cool down, let all negativity behind, and have fun again. And please, take it easy - this thread should be a trekker's place, to talk trek foremost! Let's do this in true trek tradition: Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations (IDIC). Don't let our differences be a dividing element in this community of "gentlebeings", but rather let us celebrate our differences, and create something beautiful out of it! :)

So you're responsible for this bizarre, confusing, and strangely compelling soap opera? I jest, sir.

The problem is that most of the contributors were/are not privy to the private messages going back and forth between the affected parties which I suspect were the cause for this row. It's practically impossible for me to accept collective responsibility for clandestine transpirings beyond my control. Anybody else who wishes, can fall on their sword in a futile display.

Actually, it must be pretty bad if General Trelane (retired) has tried to calm things down here. :)

Look, Kirk playing with the links is his personal thing. He is very young. Adding to that he is dealing with very serious real life issues, and his meds make him feel like crap. That affects mood. He is, as we all see, very sensitive to criticism or loss of friends. He deals with this via doing the link thing. He is always back and always reuploads. It may be inconvenient but not a deal breaker. I felt there was some bullying, and a very cavalier approach to the possible outcome of his illness. I felt that attitude towards any human being is unwarrented, but especially for an adult talking to a minor.

The main issue was between me and Greg. When we were able to communicate privately, we came to an agreement. I am done as far as the public flaming is concerned. I would of course welcome his acceptance if not friendship, but that is not likely to happen. His posts were deleted by Jessie and mine were edited by myself to remove any blatant offensiveness, as was my sig. Even if he does not stick to the deal I will not drag the threads into it again. I am sorry for it. AZsneed was not the cause of my outbursts. And whatever he said to anyone privately aught remain so. His actions had no influence on my decision, and so his feeling of guilt is also unwarrented. To those in the dark, as I said all posts are modified so you cannot see what happened. It was NOT trivial to me and I made that clear. Those who disagree, I am sorry you feel that way. Adding to this was any lack of support from supposed friends. It may clear my distress about certain language and not one, even my very best friend had my back. (that is resolved amongst members willing to do so). I have always had YOUR backs when trouble makers came in, even Greg's despite my anger. I felt extremely betrayed and hurt. Terribly hurt, For the most part that still exists. I am sorry but that severely affects my opinion of most of you. However like I said I will not address that publicly here. I welcome any pm's if any care about that. That is the basic rundown. PM messages are not clandestine and are meant to remain private. That they were not always has been addressed between me and members involved. As to Kirk's personal complaints he submitted the complaints to mods. Whatever actions taken there have also remained private. I will not publicly address this again so hopefully this will be the end of this discussion and we/you will indeed find it in you to just move on to usual hijinks. Thank you for reading.

I have a technical question about storing data, and I figure this is a good place to seek advice. I recently experienced a drive failure that I did not have backed up elsewhere. I have been able to reconstruct the data, but I am trying to figure out a good backup other than backing up one hard drive to another. My question is in regards to conversion: 1TB is equal to 1024GB, correct? Thus if I am storing by burning to a 4.7 GB dvd, then I would need approximately 220 blank dvd's to equal one TB correct?

Q's lines a pretty well scripted, and De Lancie fires them out convincingly. Top notch.

That's a lot discs to back up a drive!

In actuality, a 1TB disk will not yield 1024GB of storage space. If you inspect the drive's properties from Admin Tools / Computer Management, you'll notice the usable space is about 8% less than the physical - the rest is used by the filing system for formatting and error correction - an integral part of disc technology. It's a similar deal with DVD-Rs as you're hoping to use. From 4.7 Single Layers discs you'll get around 4.3GB usable space. If you opt for Dual Layer, you're looking at 7.9GB actual space. Another option, Blu-ray, is where you'll get around 23GB from a 25GB Single Layer disc. So for a 1TB hd (931GB), you'll require 217 DVD-R SL discs, 117 DVD-R DL discs, or 40 BD-R SL discs. Now the cost is going to vary somewhat depending what you purchase! Get the calculator out and see which one gives the best $/GB.

My personal choice would be to buy a USB 3 external drive and format it with NTFS. USB 3 drives may be external, but they're light years ahead of USB 2. It's like having an internal drive they're that fast. I also found NTFS recovery to be somewhat better, and of course you can dump files bigger than 4GB on there. And they're pretty cheap in comparison to purchasing all those blank discs. May be a fireproof and waterproof storage box would also by a wise purchase in which to keep the drive(s).

One final tip for writing to optical discs. Always verify what you write. And if you're losing a ton of discs in supposed write fails, it's time to upgrade the firmware in your optical drive. That's the most probable culprit, not the discs themselves.

also no insult, but... that's actually the maximum recommended speed

and i would say go with what theone2000 is saying, you can find external USB 3 drives rather cheap and considering the amount of storage space and the speed you get, it's the best value for money... NOTE - of course you would need to have a computer with USB 3 ports (blue inside the port instead of the usual black for USB 2) to be able to benefit from the speed

Those figures only refer to the top speed which can be achieved on the outer tracks. If you use Nero or similar you can see the current write speed during a burn. The figures are quite low at the beginning and I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. It's more likely to be an issue with the malleability of the metal disc rather than the laser. As such the rating is coded onto the CD-R or DVD-R so that disc burning software will not exceed spec.

What happened to the UV laser Pioneer demonstrated about ten years ago? It was a 500GB disc. I'm only aware of a commercially available Pioneer Blu-Ray BD drive which can write to 125GB discs. Apparently, now being adopted by 4K content providers.

Just going off topic to discuss a Star Trek issue...

Last night I caught some of ST6 on Film Four just to see if Rene Auberjonois had been reinstated in his role as Col. West. He was not. As I recall, I saw him in the theatrical release and on VHS, and I believe on the early television airings too. However, for the past ten years or so, he has been cut. His "we can clean their chronometers" line, and the bit where his mask is removed and real identity revealed are gone. I've checked with Rene Auberjonois - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki (http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Rene_Auberjonois) and it states that the Col. West role was cut from the theatrical version. Not true in the UK. I was there. Twice. With witnesses who will testify.

So what's behind this chicanery? The Col. West scenes are clearly related to committing a false flag operation, in this case killing old Mr. President in order to blame the opposition (Klingons) and get a war started. Sound familiar? Apparently, it appears this narrative is forbidden on our screens, and our thoughts. How I miss the old thought provoking Star Trek.

The film isn't particularly long and the key scenes were very short. A lot of time could have been saved by ditching the intro which seems to go on forever, but instead a key part of the plot which was written-in to show the depths of conspiracy was purposely deleted. I'll repeat. The cinema version, the VHS version both Pan&Scan and widescreen editions, and early terrestrial screenings didn't delete this key plot development. It was deleted retrospectively. Kind of a Special Edition in reverse. Going boldly only where TPTB allow.

I think the biggest criticism I have is that they showed how much of him was left. In the original film (no sequels) you never really knew exactly how much was flesh and how much was machine. It left a bit to the question of man or machine. This one it didn't even make sense when they showed him 'what' he looked like. But I did like the dynamic between the doctor and Michael Keaton pushing the questions and morality.

Awesome, Mr. Scott. That's interesting. Our corroborating eye witness accounts are clearly contradicting the article I cited Rene Auberjonois - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki (http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Rene_Auberjonois). That's odd, I could have sworn I saw it at the theater! I do remember that scene because they called him "Colonel" which is the first time in a Star Trek Movie they ever used that rank! which was odd for something that takes place in the late 23rd century! that's why I remember it.

I guess it's much more likely that a small handful of people remember it correctly and everyone else including official sources (such as the Star Trek Encyclopedia) are wrong*. You win, I shan't argue any further.

That's a very good question. (Ah, to take a tour of Voyager and Defiant, that would be cool, especially since I've picked up the Eaglemoss replicas a while back.)

And the answer to that great question, wait for it, is that, in all honesty, I'm getting there, is simply that I do not know.

But wouldn't it be great if they did a tour for all ships in the fleet and all alien vehicles too in the ST Universe?

Well, see but he's right. Look, spectre already started his Star Trek Resources Thread, collecting all of the links made here. I myself have an open and active thread for all Next Gen and Enterprise retail and Boot albums. This thread has had no real music posts in a long while. It was allowed to maintain as a conversational thread, an exception to the dl forum rules. But, if the burning of the ship continues, then Jessie will close the thread. Since the others have already left, who cares? Sorei, spectre Gold and I continue in his thread. Big whooping deal.

New threads were required because William neither posted new albums nor maintained the first page links. It was left up to others to do so. SO why not make your own thread? After all, only the op can edit the first post, and so is the only one who can maintain and organize it. William was content to let spectre to do that. Gold was creating threads for whatever reason he wanted. There is no rule to say he cannot. So, big whoopin' whoop.

Probably since a Mod told him to let things go and move on. He did not. He argued with the mod and threatened to "burn down the ship". Since he was escalating, I would guess he got banned. They do not hand out perma bans here so he should be back soon enough. But out of curiosity, since when would admin have to answer to you?

Well, I guess some people got the impression that this is their site to do or say whatever they want. It is not. Mods have tough job to straddle the line of letting members talk, and preventing flaming. Challenging a mod, especially this one, never results in tea and scones. Ever. He tries to be reasonable, but he IS the mod and his decisions are his decisions. He is under no obligation to explain. It is still a moderated site, with certain rules and, which people either forget or just don't care...

Star Trek Audio Books at Mega (https://mega.co.nz/#F!HV1miSob!CC99t1Kf90dan6RbXnbO6Q) They're still uploading.

Well, your question really is twofold. As for uploading new stuff, I would go to the Depository, to concentrate the trek stuff in one thread. People mostly go there for the files. (Or put it up on both places, to maximize the potential downloads).

As for staying here, that's another thing. People come here for smalltalk mostly nowadays, and to have fun. Both threads should stay the way they are, they complement each other.

@Mr. Gold:

have a look here: attention, info is given!

In Star Trek: Destiny a history of the Borg was presented. They were survivors of the Caeliar Gestalt and the crew of the Earth ship Columbia NX-02 thrown back in time and into the Delta Quadrant following an attack on a Caeliar city ship. The Caeliar forced the Humans into a perverted form of their Gestalt (a mental linking of the Caeliar) based upon the will of the last surviving Caeliar and not the whole. They launched a final attack of Federation space with over 7,000 cubes at their disposal; however, they were stopped after the Caeliar were made aware of their responsibility for the Borg's actions. The Collective was dismantled and the assimilated Borg drones were accepted into the Caeliar's gestalt. Former drones fully regained their individuality (as evidenced by Seven of Nine's remaining implants dematerializing). This was followed up in the novel Full Circle. Q later noted that this timeline's invasion was provoked by Admiral Janeway's trip to the past in Endgame, reflecting that, if she had done nothing, the Borg would have eventually launched a massive assault on the Milky Way galaxy centuries in the future that would have completely assimilated all other life.

Well, at least we'll know what to expect. I figure at least 1 Spock vs 3 Borg hand to hand fight scenes. Preferably leaping between buildings, and...and..Uhura smoking one with a big gun...:d

Dark one, I see you never meet the Abyss. It control the Magog World Ship (http://andromeda.wikia.com/wiki/Magog_World_Ship) and Satellite (http://andromeda.wikia.com/wiki/Magog_Satellite_Ship). Protected by millions of swarm ship and multiple Point Singularity Projector (http://andromeda.wikia.com/wiki/Point_Singularity_Projector).

The Abyss use the route of Ages to control all this from another universe with Radical Isotopes (http://andromeda.wikia.com/wiki/Radical_Isotopes).

That would be the Star Trek Destiny series, correct? There was also the Next Generation novel, Vendetta that was quite enjoyable.

However, the Abyss was destroyed when Captain Dylan Hunt and the crew of the Andromeda Ascendant pulled the sun of Tarn Vedra that Trance Gemini was the Avatar of, through the Route of Ages.

However, the Abyss was destroyed when Captain Dylan Hunt and the crew of the Andromeda Ascendant pulled the sun of Tarn Vedra that Trance Gemini was the Avatar of, through the Route of Ages.

I stated by the corrupt Collector Pish Tryan : "The Abyss was defeated once before, we can hope to do the same, but we are out of time." -> Soon The Nearing Vortex S4E6

Anyway, evil always return, it's the endless circle of dark and light !

In Star Trek, you can resume in many possibility :

The Romulans attemps to drestroy the Federation/Klingon alliance
The many attempt by the Borg to assimilate the Federation
The Temporal war during the Enterprise show (Builder and Suliban -> the one given the order to the Sulbian look similar to the Abyss of the serie Andromeda)

Gone, but not forgotten! I want to thank all of you who sent your support via PMs! It really made me feel good that you supported my position. It's just unfortunate that we are living under the rule of a little boy from Europe who has no knowledge of our constitutional rights to "Freedom of speech". I was NOT trying to start trouble, and I didn't mean that I wanted to "burn down" this site, or this thread. It was a "metaphor", not to be taken literally! But I wouldn't expect a littlebrain to understand that. (can he ban me again for my opinion?)

For anyone else who thought that, it was not my intention.

Thanx

Ahhhhhh :) TOS movies. Let's discuss...

Like... why the heck can't they cram the director's cuts onto the blurays?

Or... which is the best one? Personal favorite: Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country. Why? I don't know... is it because it's the most STNG:iest of them? Perhaps... :)

sorei

@Calidoran

i still have not seen every available director's cut! (no matter if bluray or otherwise)
any suggestions as to which one profits the most from being cut by the director? ;)

theone mentioned Eddie Murphy turning down a part in Star Trek IV, must be why they did the Hospital scene rather then Chekov and Uhura going into a Night Club (Thirsty I guess) sitting down at a table momentarily and Eddie Murphy is doing a stand up routine impersonating Buckweat. A fight breaks out and T.J. Hooker shows up and Uhura and Chekov look at each other like WHAT??? get up and leave.

they say ST:TMP benefits most... or at least much was cut, but then again if that was some of those flyby scenes it woildn't matter

Spectre8750
06-28-2014, 10:09 PM
Yeah Calidoran, more flyby scenes added in, it's now called intermission, The Go Get A Smoke and Interplay scene. They did add the outer Vger ship scene back in.

Mr. Gold, restricting your pm box can be annoying I know, but it can often offer a bit of respite from the nagging gnats and their little stings. Take a day or so with no pm. Then evaluate your position. The gnats will be persistent. Nothing will change that.

@scoregeek:

well, there is a dr.spock in real life, as far as i know a popular children's doctor.
sadly, we are never safe from dis-illusionment or disappointment.
Never, not even when meeting people without the net: wait till they open their mouth to talk, wait tillmake-up is gone, wait till other stuff is gone, wait until the first 8 weeks have passed by.... the potential disappointments never end. ;)
yet: if it was me, in your situation, after some major suffering, i would tend to ask myself: he ight not have been the knight I hoped for, BUT am I the princess he might have hoped for?
but well, just some random thoughts ;)

@del37:
for me, it would be a definitive plus. My husband at least showed interest and started asking me about Trek, as he did not know much about it...
and he had the patience and was clever enough to sit and wait and listen to my answers too :D
