Greg, Mr Scott,
Welcome back.
I've been helping wrap up Volume Three of These are the voyages: tos - Home (
http://www.thesearethevoyagesbooks.com/) and I'm interested to learn that STAR TREK's ratings were never as bad (comparatively) as the urban legend states. Marc Cushman licensed the actual Nielsen numbers, providing them for each episode. Most of the time TREK was #2.
It was TREK's cost, plus Roddenberry's consistently jerk-ish behavior, that got STAR TREK on execs' bad side. There was an industry rumor that they might get moved from Fridays to Tuesday mid-season, but Jerry Lewis wouldn't give up the slot, and his show was cheaper.
Gotta go to work now,
Mark

Sounds about right! Plus Gene was in hog heaven with the notoriety and money, which lead him to be known around town as a womanizer! Majel even talked about it in her sons film "Trek Nation" (if I'm not mistaken). A new writer turned Producer of a new TV show does not piss off major television executives, let along studio executives, even today that's not a career builder. We all know the finale outcome, he had to step away from his show and only had success again when TNG came on the air, the movies provided some financial help to him and his family, but it was TNG that put him back on top (no pun intended) again and gave him the money to do things he could not do before, the up side was he was to old and health wise not able to womanize again. I'll never understand how Majel could stay married to a man like that!
A wonderful series of books Mark!

So I had the opportunity to pick up the Trek movie collection as blu ray dirt cheap, but am not sure about getting it. I hear bad things about it. I gather the picture quality sucks, and the theatrical editions are used, and not the director's cuts or special editions. Any comments from those who have them?

The Directors Cuts only exist on DVD, sadly. Plus commentaries on some of the movies are done by Robert Orci & Co - who wants that?!

Her saying your links are reported isn't really starting anything, she says that in other threads too when there are links posted to music that shouldn't be here.
If you could please remove the links to the music in question and say to ask people to pm you for them instead that'd be great.
Gonna delete what happened here so things can try and get back to normal. I'm not trying to silence anyone, it's just not fair that other members need to read through this and wonder what's going on.

Okay, ALL links removed, and I will NOT be posting or sharing anymore! With all this bullshit, it's just not worth it!
Sancio, you have threatened (According to Amanda) to close this thread, why wait??? Just close it today, it's just not worth remaining open anymore, it has become a horrible place to visit with all the shit that Amanda and Mr. Gold (Kirk101) have caused, and really needs to just be closed. There are several other TREK threads that everyone can go to and post on!
This thread needs to be retired! It's what Amanda has wanted all along.

The links have ALL been removed, and with people that I thought were friends, that "like" Amanda every time she slams me, calls me a moron, or puts up links to that 25 plus year old video, it really is a very horrible place to visit, and needs to be shut down. I WILL NOT be sharing anything here ever again. I will not be reupping my old links, nor creating any new links, and I'm sure that Mr. Gold will be really happy about that, he's wanted to take over the whole franchise since he first got here!
Amanda didn't want me to come back and post or share links, Jessie didn't, Sorei didn't, Mr. Gold didn't, Max Stein, Soundtrekker, and many others. WHY would I want to put up with this bullshit?

There's a franchise? You own the threads? Wow. I did not know. I posted links because your DEMANDED proof of what I was saying. I then provided the proof YOU demanded. You clearly knocked over the biobed getting out of it. Added to the production's assertion in interviews that the following day's scenes had to be rewritten due to a broken prop, it is corroborated evidence and less rumor than fact. You demanded, I gave. You do not get to call foul now, just because your true twisted personality is revealed.

Why don't we hear from a production exec who was actually ON THE SET, the day after I made my video:
[Doug Drexler]
Hi Greg, I don't know anything about the bed costing a day of shooting. I wouldn't have confirmed that. I remember him (Guy Vardeman) saying it, but it's extremely doubtful that it would have cost a day of shooting. The assistant directors are much smarter than that. They would have simply shuffled the schedule. I don't recall there being any mention of the biobed even being knocked over.
The only thing that I can confirm is that the tape is as much a part of Trek history, and is really fun... and funny.
THE FACTS ARE: There was NO report of a breakin with security the next day, or any day after that! I checked with my friends on security for weeks after that, and the studio had no knowledge of the existence of that video until 1991 or 1992. By that time, I was already off the show and working on motion pictures, and put the whole TREK situation far behind me! There was no report about Greg Stone until about 1998 or 1999, and by that time, I was OUT of the business altogether!
AND, if it hadn't been for Mr. RALPH M. MILLER making mega copies and distributing that video, it would be totally unknown today! And nobody would be the wiser.
Those are the FACTS!

Except the animated gif you demanded to be taken down clearly shows you doing so. Perhaps you are saying that was not you after all? I can put it back into my sig then? You don't want it posted because you say it is you. So "you" clearly get out of the bed and in doing so knock it to the floor. You deny this is what happened, or that it is you? I am confused. Since it is on, ya know, tape?

So apparently me asking for someone to please remove links and giving the person the chance to do it themselves instead of me just doing it means i didn't want them to post links anymore or want them back.
First off, William, i actually don't care if you do or don't post anything here, stay or go. I don't sit at my pc wondering if you're going to post something, i don't think about you whatsoever. It's only when you cause drama that needs dealing with that i interact with you, as the forum admin, other than that i don't care what you do or post, as long as it's allowed here.
Stop being a drama queen, your reaction to some links of yours being reported was way over the top and the same with your reaction to me asking nicely to remove the links.

williamtaylor1969, I don't want you to leave or stop sharing music, I was only saying that Jessie seems fair in pointing out the forum rules. There was no threats of kicking you off the forum or name calling. Jessie just suggested using PMs in the future. I appreciate all that you shared and was not taking sides in this latest blow up. Jessie was trying to enforce the rules and keep the peace. Something I did for 30 years so I respect that.

I Just Started Re-Watching TNG Up to S2 "Q Who" One Of My All Time Favs Borg & Q In One Episode Fantastic!.
It Is Amazing How TNG Still Looks Fantastic And Not Outdated.
I Must Admit I Liked Dr Palaski She Was A Bit More Firmer towards Crew Members (Especially Data) Dr Crusher Was Great But Never Really Challenged Things As Much (Here And There She Had Good Moments I.e "Descent" When In Command) And Still Ashame We Lost Tasha Yar So Early But It Allowed Our Good Friend Worf To Move Up As A Character.

For the record, Doug Drexler did not start working on TNG until the season after the set visit incident happened. And when he did join the crew, he was not a "production exec", he was a make-up artist. I'm not saying his reply has no merit, just clearing up the facts.
Now to steer it back away from that, here's a trivia question for you Trexperts...
How many characters (and name them) has Brent Spiner played in Star Trek? ...Not a very hard one, I grant you. :)

Ok. From what I am reading, although the movies are remastered for bluyray, it's misleading. The fx are still only done at dvd level, and for live action scenes, a generous amount of noise reduction has been used. Many say excessively used rendering a bad and waxy looking image. Sadly it is sounding as if they are not worth hunting down for free let alone purchasing, even at a cheap price. I hear similar things about the Next Gen series bluray. They alternated companies redoing the fx between seasons, so every other season is either really great, or really sucky. Such a shame.

Nope, this is completely untrue for the Trek movies. Whatever review you're reading is 100% wrong. The "fx done at DVD level" doesn't even make sense, because they were optical effects mixed into the films. You might be confusing the Enterprise Blu-Ray releases with the films, because that's not the case with them. The only thing that you might be hearing here is that the director's cut of TMP did not have the effects rendered past 480i since HD was not considered at the time, which is why it has not been released on blu-ray.
Also, I found your comments about "willies" really childish and am disappointed that you chose to respond that way.

TNG has a lightness about it, that DS9 hardly had. Even the Holodeck episodes had a serious touch...in my opinion.
Yes some holodeck episodes where very serious the big goodbye is one of my fav holodeck tng

Mr Gold, that is a very good scene and well acted, I had hoped they would have one or two more visits to Jean-luc's family, its sad how that turned out . I just watched Starship Rising- an interesting low budget space film. It's for true sifi people and is a little hard to follow at times. The music isn't bad and they do a good job with special effects for a low budget B class space film. Lots of swearing which really wasn't needed in most of the scenes

Yes with regards to picards family even a small scene over subspace communications would have been nice. And after generations the loss of all 3 of them was so traumatic for picard.

I have read over 70 reviews so far. Many quite negative. I am quite capable of knowing the difference between the movie series and the inferior Enterprise TV series. I may download a couple to see for myself, but I will be passing on these. In the end, I really prefer the Director's cuts of the films and so will stick to my dvd's of them.
I liked Polansky. I had hoped she'd soften a bit, but I am not sure she would have. The actress had that harshness in her, and most of her roles. McCoy dug at Spock to provoke his human feelings. Polansky picked just to be...mean sometimes it seems. But, I have seen the first and second seasons only once or so. Not my favorite TV viewing. I liked season 3 best as a season, and some of my favorite episodes are in season 4.

I agree with Mr.Gold, reviews are expressions of individual opinions, mostly not objective descriptions of some given fact or value, many depend on expectation and taste and other criteria, one might have learned...
Often enough I have experienced that a novel that was reviewed greatly, for example, still was not great for me: simply not my cup of tea, despite the reviews....

The Director's cut holds up better. It...is a slow movie, and fairly clumsy with some of the dialog. Still better to reach for the stars and not quite get there than to put out..:erm: Battle Beyond The Stars, say...
They/It is not MY review. I have read reviews from folks who bought it on multiple sites. In the end though, I made my call based on only the theatrical cuts being presented. I own the dvd's of the first two movies as the SE. I cannot see buying the BluRay set if those are not present, especially if the majority of reviewers were not totally blown away. I may dl a version of the bluray for the sixth movie and see for myself. Reviews cannot be "right" or "wrong". It is entirely subjective, being that person's opinion. I would never base a buy on just one review. But, like I said, it doesn't matter in the end since the criteria I am using is not met.

Regarding versions, recently I re-watched two ST:TMP versions that I dubbed to DVD from old VHSes: The original video release (of the "shorter" original theatrical version) and the ABC-TV broadcast (a "live" recording of the over-the-air version).
When you are more familiar with the widescreen versions, the pan-and-scans are interesting and amusing. Sometimes they pan, sometimes jump-cut back-and-forth across the original widescreen image, etc.
STAR TREK Lives, "as long as we remember it," to mis-quote McCoy at the end of ST II.

I am merely discussing the reviews I have read. I think you need to learn to chill out or something. Reviewers give subjective opinions. No more than that. And I am free to base my decision to buy on them, or not. I am also free to discuss that review, which I am doing. Or are you somehow worried that I am driving Paramount out of here as I did Willy? Bull. You're now playing semantics. She came in and authoritatively stated that these reviews told her that the FX were "DVD level." It shows a serious lack of reading comprehension to get to that, and it's just plain misinformation.

You can argue the merits of the director's and SE as filmmaking, but there's just no way that a DVD-resolution at 480p is better-looking than a full 1080p. You can't actually make that claim. The TMP scan is marvelous.

Battle beyond the Stars-now that's a "what if" movie, The music was great, the plot was good but too much like star wars a new hope which came out about the same time. The cast -John "boy" Walton as the lead star just killed the movie and the special effects at times were like old 50s space movies. I think if they released a new version with the original music and an updated plot with good special effects and good cast it could be a good to great movie.

i am not playing anything. semantics are part of the process of communication and understanding, and texts (reviews too) are always open to interpretation. Any text can mis-inform, even if not intended. language and expression are far from being clear, will always be partly ambiguous. talking/reading always had the chance of being misunderstood...

Obviously highlighting in quote was not enough. Or perhaps you yourself had a tad bit of difficulty comprehending. I know of very few who would say quoting internet reviews was authoritative, especially if one were to go on and ask for opinions. Seems awfully soft for authoritative. But you know that too.
Battle Beyond was the first I came up with. Probably of the much better than it deserved Horner score. And that ship. A female voiced talking ship with boobs......
Surely there are worse, but the gist of my statement seems well understood.

Lore took his ears off? I'll have to watch that episode again!
Also, Data's Emotion Chip was not compatible with Lore. Which may possibly mean there are some differences in their circuitry.
And, Data was fully functional. ["I'm talking downtown" to quote the host of "Afternoon Yak", a character from a Simpsons episode.] So he keeps insisting. I'll take his word for it. Lore on the other hand never made that particular boast leading to some speculation on dodgy forums.

Well, Data would be able to go through the complete book without effort, no doubt, and I absolutely can see Tasha being able to handle this, too - she is that tough! The only question would be, did they have enough time during "The Naked Now", before the influence of the virus was going away... The Kama Sutra isn't a quick crash course, exactly. ;)

This thread needs to be transferred over to the DISCUSSION venue, as there is only talking on here, and no discussion of TREK music at all! Amanda was outspoken about this on other threads, and threatened to have Sancio shut down the thread unless off topic discussions were stopped! Even though the discussions here are trek based, it still should be moved over to the discussion area!

Ok then... here's a topic:
How many different variations/versions of the main theme from The Inner Light do you have? This is one of the most beautiful themes in STNG in my opinion (but that is also open for discussion;) )
The Inner Light 02:28 (Guitar by Gregg Nestor and Flute by Jessica Pierce) (MP3)
The Inner Light 02:11 (Piano Solo Version by Dennis McCarthy) (MP3)
Orchestral Suite from The Inner Light 06:36 (FLAC) (from the Best of Star Trek, 30th Anniversary)
Theme from The Inner Light 02:50 (FLAC) (from GNP CRESCENDOs STNG Vol. 4)
Lullaby #1 (solo flute) (00:50) (from LaLa-Land's STNG Vol. 1)

I know there was a single track posted here, main theme from Inner light. I do not seem to have kept that. I am sure there are various renditions on the big box sets, from the episode and I'd have those. Any cover produced for the compilation albums I'd not have heard. So, what other versions are there. Hey, that's great stuff, smartin! Thanks for the link, I didn't see that before. And, while I'm also somewhat familiar with the symphonic works of Beethoven, Brahms and Mahler, I have to admit I wasn't aware of the connection regarding the opening fanfare of star trek.
One nitpick, though: as stated in the video, Alexander Courage wrote the trek main theme "circa 1966", but I have to disagree. It was more like 1964, the year the first pilot "The Cage" was produced! Other than that a great video!

Their biggest mistake was having Archer hanging in his quarters all the time. That's not very Star-Trek-Captain-y.
And from a story point of view, he should be at the center of the action, like at the start of an episode, not have people come to him with some problem. He isn't the friggin doctor or counselor.

Not in any official capacity, no. And I have seen no promo for that episode. The only official album released thus far is for the pilot, Broken Bow. There are composer's score promos available for Silent Enemy, Canamar, Regeneration, Similitude, In A Mirror Darkly & These Are The Voyages. There are also a handful of samples including tracks for Acquisition, Desert Crossing and Horizon. That's all I have ever come across but that does not mean there are not others out there. Rumor has it both Voyager and Enterprise will be receiving box releases at some point.

That would be Future's End - they're enjoying the emotional rollercoaster of US Soaps!

Rewatching Enterprise right now :) Must say I was far too opinionated against this show and also
it screws a bit with Star Trek events both Aquisition and Regeneration (Ferengi, Borg) belong to
the best of their kind if you ask me. I actually haven't been so scared of the Borg in a looooong time,
wasn't scared on Voyager but here you get that good old vibe from Best Of Both Worlds again.
And spending the first 10 minutes of the episode without the main cast to be seen, that was just ballsy
and I applaud them for that!

@olaf:
sounds weird maybe but i was asking myself if i want to rewatch tng or enterprise yet again....(I finished voyager and liked it a lot more than while watching the first time)
one episode a day keeps the doctor away ;)
rewatching has merits. i can enjoy much more.

I haven't made up my mind but I think I even might like Voyager better than TNG. I'd never thought I'd say that.
Man, you know what I wish right now? That Wesley as we've seen him at Starfleet Academy would be there on Voyager instead of e.g. Harry Kim. Wesley being a genius would be toned down by Belana Torres and Janeway because they are just as smart and as an Ensign from Starfleet Academy Wes couldn't stick out as the (annoying) smart kid anymore (see below though).
Can you see (Starfleet Academy) Wesley walking through the corridors with Tom Paris? Can you see how Chakotay is his mentor (instead of Janeway (not really) being Harries?) Him and Seven could have a cool working relationship, both being pretty smart and kinda outsiders because of it. Wes and the Doc could have some relationship too, Wes could be drawn to hang out at sickbay more then necessary, because it makes him feel like being back on the Enterprise. And so on...
I think of Wesley replacing Harry Kim perhaps mostly because Harry is so annoyingly green and he really doesn't bring that much to the table. It's weird they decided the same for Neelix, they decided all he's useful for is moral and cooking. Two non-essential crew members. Wesley wouldn't be like that. Just as smart as Belana, Janeway and Seven he'd actually be useful.

That could work the doctor and seven would be like data to wesley.
But.... i would miss the amount of time poor harry was killed and brought back kind of the south park kenny of star trek! :D

I don't feel season one is that bad...
Breaking the Ice, Fortunate Son, Silent Enemy, Dear Doctor, Shuttlepod One (especially!) and Desert Crossing are all great episodes.

Watched Star Trek The search for Spock last night, I remember the 1st time watching it and feeling great that Spock was back but then Kirk had to destroy the Enterprise. I remember it brought a tear to my eye like the lost of an old friend. I thought it was the end of the series-how could you have Star Trek without the Enterprise? My wife held my hand and said it will be alright :)
Could be worse. You could well-up at the end of every single episode of Overhaulin' like I do. :)
