Billie, i didnt know that you have Erdenstern tracks with you.
I sometimes hear them on Radio Rivendell (http://www.radiorivendell.com/index.php?page=music_info&what=artist&id=210).
Do you have complete Erdenstern albums?
i've been searching for their albums online, but they are hard to find. I couldn't find any.
Hehe, i'm glad that you like Erdenstern.
Yes, i have four albums (i bought the albums at Erdenstern (http://www.erdenstern.de/shop/?lang=en))

INTO THE GREEN creates a green scenery, with mighty forests, deep marshlands, hills and plains and the like. You will meet jolly townsfolk, strange and dangerous creatures, as well as mysterious priests of an ancient belief long forgotten. You will witness fierce fights, great adventures, quests, riddles and bravery. You will endure despair in times of strain and fear. And, finally, you will feel joy and relief when home is in sight again.

INTO THE RED takes you into the turmoil of an upcoming war. You will be called to the court of the king, you will be armed and equipped, and you will have to prove yourselves in fierce battle. You will face ambushes, fight monsters and wistfully think of your loved ones back home. This journey will demand a lot of you: bravery, austerity, loss and pain.

INTO THE BLUE brings you aboard a proud vessel. Be it as a privateer, as dutiful crewmen, or as a shifty pirate captain —
Into The Blue contains a lot of music for your sea adventures.
From the weighing of the anchor in your home port, through storms and sea battles, with mysterious maps to foreign islands, to reach the well deserved treasure at last, that lies buried deep in the sands of a distant shore. Whereever your travels may take you, whatever waters you have to sail through

Disgust. Fear. Something is lurking in shadows.
INTO THE DARK leads you down deep abysses, to sinister, mighty enemies, and nameless horrors.
Lost in a gloomy realm, you encounter eerie figures, fight dreadful beasts and witness gory rituals.
Swallow your nausea, stare down the terrors, and face the unspeakable!

Let's start this week-end in a classy, sumptuous way!

Here's a score I already posted some time ago. But it largely deserves to be reposted again. This is my favorite score. The one I'd bring with me on a deserted island if I had to choose only one.

I don't know how he did it, but James Horner composed an out-of-this-world score for Peter Yates' 1983 movie. For those of you who still don't know it, it's a huge symphonic score, incredibly stylish and elegant, breathtakingly epic and inspired, and... words cannot describe this, you have to listen it to believe it.

This rip is made in the highest mp3 quality possible (lame 3.98 preset insane). All covers are included.

Review from scorereviews.com (http://www.scorereviews.com/reviews/review.aspx?id=66)

Krull has previously been one of the most hard-to-get and sought after scores by Horner, and people have paid a lot of money for the two prior releases, released in 1987 and 1992. The problem with those releases were that a lot of music was left out, but now, thanks to Super Tracks, we are given the chance to hear the complete score for the first time, and we owe them a great deal, because Krull is one of those scores no Horner fan or filmmusic fan in general should miss. Trust me.

The music was composed in 1983, when Horner was about to turn 30. The story goes that James was ill, and didn't have much time when he composed the score, forcing him to hire a gang of orchestrators helping him out, and apparently they, and Horner of course, who orchestrated as much as the time allowed him to, did a fantastic job, because Krull is truly a feast for the ears, with its many different harmonies and sounds. There is always something happening in different parts of the orchestra. Krull is a milestone in Horner's career and I think that Horner experimented a lot, and tried new ideas, when composing this score. For example, some of the tracks has this strange swishing synth sound in the background and you can discern ideas and phrases that later would be fully developed in scores such as Willow and Aliens.

The music is performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and the Ambrosian Singers, the same orchestra and choir Horner used for Brainstorm the same year. The choir is used mainly to create an eerie, mystical, sound, like for example in the first track, "Krull Main Title and Colvyn's Arrival", where the choir, mostly haunting female voices singing in "odd" intervals, is used in the beginning, along with a superb, heroic fanfare, that's building larger and larger until the wonderful main theme (a very melodic, captivating and long theme) is presented for the first time. What follows is 90 minutes of great, mainly brassy action music, with triumphant trumpet phrases and heroic horn fanfares, like for example "Ride of the Firemares" (which I think is the best track, along with the main title and "Epilogue and End Title"), filled with different motifs and fantastic orchestrations, sometimes interrupted, or varied, with more lyrical and tender moments (like for instance in the beginning of "The Slayer's Attack" or in the concert version of the love theme), although it is the action and adventurous music that plays the more prominent part of the score.

Something that resembles this (http://www.divshare.com/download/5855447-a77).

Try these, they're in the same style. It's a series of short orchestral ambiences from the movie Mysterious Island. Quite effective.

Hello everyone! Long time lurker in this topic, and I've really enjoyed downloading and listening to all the great music that's been posted! I particularly enjoyed the packs of 'horrifically minded' compositions, and felt I'd contribute by posting Jason Grave's soundtrack to the hit game Dead Space! Just in the event that you music buffs haven't given it a listen yet. I'm really no expert when it comes to music, but in the context of the game every bit of it was positively brilliant. Some of the sounds he gets out of those instruments are really just unreal. For examples of what I'm talking about I recommend my two favorite tracks that play for the game's boss segments, The Leviathan and The Hive Mind. Those of you into very intense, action-oriented pieces should also give it a whirl.

1. Dead Space Theme 3:35
2. Welcome Aboard The U.S.G. Ishimura 5:21
3. The Necromorphs Attack 5:51
4. Fly Me To The Aegis Seven Moon 4:55
5. Severed Limbs Are Hazardous Waste 4:56
6. Nicole's Farewell 2:51
7. I Left My Heart In Med Lab 3 2:19
8. The Leviathan 3:18
9. Cyanide Systems Offline 3:17
10. Entering Zero-G 2:01
11. I've Got You Devolving Under My Skin 3:10
12. Manual Survival Mode Seven 4:56
13. Plasma Cutters Are Your Friend 3:14
14. The Cost Of Living Is On The Rise 4:05
15. Do Not Vomit - Do Not Shout 2:43
16. The Hive Mind 2:37
17. Escape From The Planet Of The Red 1:58

Enjoy! Strongly recommend playing these in a dark room!

Fantastic score indeed. The terrific orchestral ambiences Graves composed are breathtaking, and remarkably interesting to analyze from a purely musical technique perspective.

Thank you for your great post!

Funnily enough, I was thinking of posting another ORCHESTRAL HORROR COMPILATION, because in the last one I didn't put several pieces I consider as masterpieces of the genre. So if someone is interested I'll post this pack this week-end.

Billie, thanks for the Erdenstern tracks. It's a nice compilation.
Have you heard the new album, Into The Gold (http://www.erdenstern.de/intothegold/?lang=en)?

Arthierr, Krull is indeed one of the greatest James Horner soundtracks.
I really miss the music composing style that Horner had on the 80's.

arthierr

Yes, Sanico, Horner's music from the eighties is the most impressive musical oeuvre I've heard. Nothing I've heard since that impressed me so much. This guy reached the concept of Sublime in music closer than anyone in my opinion.

Okay now my fellows, I have a small request.

I accidentally deleted my music folder yesterday.

I need some amazing scores. Althier, I trust your judgment absolutely. There is little question when I say you have impeccable taste.

Now, I am a fairly big fan of epic music. I love stuff with drums, and brass, and lots of vocals.

But I also have a thing for quite... emotional music. Let it never be said that I do not love Kanon D-dur.

So, guys, tell me. What are the soundtracks that I absolutely must download?

Oh, and before I do anything, here is what I have so far:

Phew, this display of luxury, money, mondanity and vulgarity is just obscene and disgusting...

But indeed the music is awesome, sometimes sounds like Williams but without the extreme mastery and precision of the maestro, so it's probably not him. I bet it's composed by a guy hired especially for the event, they largely have the money to afford some original orchestral music.

If someone has more info please help.

It's a dissonant and very percussive drive cue.

Beautiful suite, Sanico, thank you. The gigantic sound of this orchestra greatly enhances the already superb original score.

Billie: Thank you! I'm a big fan of symphonic arrangements of modern songs. Your post is very welcome.

Speaking of suite, here's a good opportunity to post a piece I wanted to post since a long time.

Kohei Tanaka - Gunbuster - koukyoushi Gunbuster [Symphonic Poem Gunbuster] 320k
http://www.sendspace.com/file/hp5ce5

A marvellous 10+ minute suite from the anime Gunbuster. The original score is partly symphonic but is performed by a small orchestra. For this magnificient suite they hired a much bigger orchestra. The result is sumptuous and really gives to the superb themes composed by Kohei Tanaka the great enhancement they deserves.

Enjoy!

Guys, I recently found a nice compilation of the orchestral music of Lee Holdridge posted by Sharon Agathon. That's the occasion to make a special post about this composer.

Lee Holdridge

His website:
http://www.leeholdridge.com/

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002626/

From Wikipedia: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Holdridge)

Lee Holdridge (b. March 3, 1944) is a Haitian-born American television composer and orchestrator.

He was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, of a Puerto-Rican mother and an American father. While living in Costa Rica, at age ten, he studied the violin with Hugo Mariani, who was at the time the conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica. Holdridge decided he wanted to become a composer at age fifteen, and then moved to Boston, where he finished high school and studied composition with Henry Lasker.

As an adult, Holdridge moved to New York City to continue his music studies and begin his career as a professional composer. There, he composed chamber works, rock pieces, songs, theater music and background scores for short films, and eventually came to Neil Diamond's notice. Diamond then brought Holdridge with him to Los Angeles to write arrangements for his forthcoming albums. After several gold and platinum hits, the two collaborated on the film score for Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

Holdridge has composed, conducted, and orchestrated for many films, some of the most notable being Puerto Vallarta Squeeze, Unlikely Heroes, Beautiful Music, Ever Again, and Into The Arms of Strangers: Stories of The Kindertransport. He has also composed for several television series, including The Mists of Avalon, American Family, and The Brooke Ellison Story.

Absolutely superb, first class orchestral action music. But I'd appreciate some minimal info about these tracks for me and others. Sounds like Goldenthal indeed, but the ostinato at 2:03 of part 1 is clearly reminiscent of Krull - Inside the Black Fortress (5:50).

streichorchester
11-26-2008, 09:44 PM
It's from Goldenthal's Cobb and shows the beginnings of what would later be his epic scores to Titus and Final Fantasy TSW. I think the similarity in the ostinato figure you mentioned is a coincidence. To me they sound like arpeggios in triplets (or sextuplets) just sustaining the harmony.

I always find it odd that Wada has for the past 20 years chosen to utilize the smallest sized orchestra possible. He's like the Bruce Broughton of anime scores.

I always find it odd that Wada has for the past 20 years chosen to utilize the smallest sized orchestra possible. He's like the Bruce Broughton of anime scores.

I wonder if this is his choice, or a budgetary constraint? ;)

Interesting thought though. Am I the only person who finds that usually it is the *recording technique* rather than the size of the orchestra that often sounds small on Japanese scores? I really hate the acoustic of Sound Inn (the studio where most of these things are recorded) and the engineers seem to understand little about recording an orchestra. Shoving a microphone right in every player's face makes everything sound tinny. Super Mario Galaxy, for example - I believe this is somewhere near a sixty piece orchestra, but it sounds dreadful. In comparision, Broughton had only 45 musicians for Heart Of Darkness, but it sounds absolutely superb. Walker (RIP) and co scored episodes of the animated Batman show with absolutely pathetic orchestras (20-30 players) and it sounds quite sufficient.

Consistently, British and American engineers seem to be better at recording smaller ensembles than their Japanese counterparts. Japanese engineers seem to be incredibly skilled at making sixty people sound like twenty. It's a pity their recordings are so flaming awful, because often the music is of exceptional quality.

Anyway, apologies for going off topic - thank you everybody for recent posts. I haven't been around much lately (back in Hospital) but I should be back on a slightly more regular basis now. :)

I'll explain with Cdex because it's easy and convenient, some people prefer EAC but it's for more advanced users.

- install Cdex http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/cdexos/cdex_170b2_enu.exe?download

- get the latest lame encoder http://www.free-codecs.com/Lame_Encoder_download.htm

- replace lame_enc.dll in the Cdex folder by the one in the latest lame pack

- open cdex and go to options > settings, in the encoder tab select lame as encoder and preset extreme or insane in quality.

- drag n drop your wav files in the main window of cdex and choose encode.

Pretty much all of Shosty's symphonies go this way. It's an easily identifiable sound. Lots of snare, wind runs in unison, ostinatos, etc. No one has better captured the Russian struggle of the early 20th century.

This is the first track of the bootleg from Austin Powers In Goldmember, by George S. Clinton.
If in the first two film, George S. Clinton created a soundtrack inspired by the sound of the 60's spy's movies, this time Clinton homages David Arnold sound for Bond: a fast tempo track combining electronic and orchestra together.

Here's the first movement of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 6, but it's not as exciting as the other two, and a bit longer.

http://sharebee.com/cd7ef667

Pretty much all of Shosty's symphonies go this way. It's an easily identifiable sound. Lots of snare, wind runs in unison, ostinatos, etc. No one has better captured the Russian struggle of the early 20th century.

Ah, good. Thanks, waiting for the 2 other movements. If only I had more time to explore late 19th century's classicals, there seems to be so much treasures there. I'm only used to the symphonies of Tchaikovsky and Dvorak, plus some orchestral pieces here and there.

Ah, but the mp3 compression is lossy and irreversible, which means once the informations are lost during encoding they can't be restored.

In fact re-encoding a 128k track in 320k will not increase the quality, on the contrary it will make it worse because the mp3 compression will suppress even more informations. It is a bit like the photocopy of a photocopy, you see.

A mp3 encoding should be done only once. And the only way to obtain a higher bitrate rip is to redo it from the original source. That's why I asked JRL3001 to rip from his CD.

There are only 3 movements total in this symphony. It's short and sweet, like the Symphony No. 12. Actually, if I had to rate Shosty's symphonies in terms of action awesomeness, it would go:

1. Symphony No. 7 "Lenningrad"
2. Symphony No. 5
3. Symphony No. 6
4. Symphony No. 12 "The Year 1905"
5. Symphony No. 11 "The Year 1917"
6. Symphony No. 10
7. Symphony No. 1
8. Symphony No. 4
9. Symphony No. 8 (not as action-packed, but this is my favourite)

The rest, (2, 3, 9, 13, 14, 15) are more introspective and contemplative.

Arthierr, there are only 2/3 tracks in which that action theme appears. The rest is very different and more in line with the 2 others Austin Powers music.

Most of the songs, one or two with brazil feeling, but the another with a great orchester, many with strings ^^

Ooh, you're not doing this one justice, I'm afraid!

Of the entire score, there is only twenty minutes of pure orchestral music (performed by the New Japan Philharmonic) - but what music!

There are other tracks (totalling another 10-15 minutes) performed by a range of smaller (and not quite as good in terms of performance quality) ensembles (string quartet, small orchestra, strings only, piano and strings, etc) but they're still awfully nice.

The rest is a whole melange of styles - from the Brazillian influence Billie mentioned right the way through the genres.

The whole thing is on GH - http://gh.ffshrine.org/soundtracks/1178

If you're interested in the orchestral-only tracks, they are:

CD 1:
2. Melfes - Shining Blue
11. To Deliver The Feelings

CD 2:
13. Delkes Black Wings
18. Funeral March
20. The Prayers Become Power
22. Tales

Hokay, so trying out this new audio encoding stuff. Thank you very much btw arthierr :) This is sort of a test. I am still looking for my baulders gate soundtrack and the CD with the life force track on it as well as my copy of Total Annihilation. But while you guys wait I ran the opening theme to one of my all time favorite animated movies and am sharing it with you guys.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is and has been one of my favorite movies and graphic novels for a looooong time. The movie was my introduction to anime (watching an un-translated vhs copy with my friend translating japanese to english for me) and it was when I fell in love with Hayao Miyazak's stories and Joe Hisaishi's beautiful music.

Here is the main theme to the movie. I will be more than happy to upload the rest of the score and the others I have (Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Princess Mononoke Symphony, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle) if wanted

Thank you! I'm surprised that there's not more Hisaishi here, to be honest -and Nausicaa is a superb piece of work. I've yet to see the film (for shame) but am very familiar with (not to mention in love with) the score.

AND now, my own contribution for the day... Many of you will be familiar with the music of English composer George Fenton. He has scored a great deal of television (including The Blue Planet and Planet Earth,) not to mention dozens of feature films, over the years. Last Friday, he gave a magnificent concert for BBC Radio 2, conducting the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Here it is, in full. The BBC are now offering MP3 streams of radio programmes at 128kbps. My upload is this original stream- all I have done is (losslessly) split the tracks and tag them. The audio quality is as originally streamed. BBC Radio 2 transmit at 128kbps MP2 on digital radio, so the quality of this upload will easily outdo the quality of the radio transmission. Maybe a recording from FM radio would've been a little better, I don't know - but I get bad FM reception here, so I wasn't able to record it this way.

Anyway - it's a brilliant concert, containing some of Fenton's best orchestral music, as well as a few songs performed by the George Fenton band. I have included the interval feature, which is an interesting documentary about Fenton, and for Anglophiles across the world, I have kept the BBC announcements and ident jingle.

Arthierr: Sorry about the non-orchestral parts in this - I thought that the significant orchestral bias (70%?) justified it... If you have any objection, I will remove this post. :)

Cheers all :)

Hmm... Thankyou very much for posting - I do appreciate it (seriously) but I have two problems with this:

a) It needs a bloody orchestra. Good music once again spoiled by penny-pinching.
"Real musicians create real emotions. Fake musicians create fake emotions." - Anon (a wise gentleman)
b) It is a temp track extravaganza, with the most obvious blatant theft being the theme in "The Hospital Room", which is a very thinly veiled arrangement of Monica's Theme from John Williams' AI - except it's performed by a crappy singer and a dodgy synthesised orchestra, instead of Barbara Bonney and a large studio orchestra, as it was in AI!

I apologise for being a whingeing git.

Never mind. The Williams quotations are quite obvious (although I didn't recognize exactly from which score they came), but that's a nice piece anyway. Let's hope the rest of the ost is free from borrowings.

And I said it before, I'll say it again: a fake orchestra doesn't bother me too much, if a) it sounds good, and b) the piece is composed with talent and orchestrated with taste. To me it seems these 2 aspects are present in your piece.

But indeed, to make this point clear, I prefer by far a real orchestra. There's no comparison between an average sounding real orchestra and the best existing fake orchestra. That's why I only posted "real" pieces in my packs.

And I said it before, I'll say it again: a fake orchestra doesn't bother me too much, if a) it sounds good, and b) the piece is composed with talent and orchestrated with taste. To me it seems these 2 aspects are present in your piece.

Just for the sake of clarity, I bought up the synth aspect purely as a point of interest - and to acknowledge that it's a shame that good music isn't given the respect it deserves by virtue of a competent performance. I was not returning to my old argument about "How can you call synthesised music orchestral music, any more than you can call a dead person with 'I am alive' written on his t-shirt an alive person" - I've given up on that one. ;)

Certainly, quality of the music is of primary importance - and that we can appreciate whether it's the London Symphony Orchestra, a keyboard, or even a pile of manuscript paper. However, quality of music can be harder to discern if the performance is not up to scratch, and therefore less accessible. Am I the only person on the planet for whom an emotional moment in music is completely spoiled when the performance is computer-generated, electronic fakery? The obvious flaws of the performance disrespect the material and therefore interfere with my enjoyment. In those cases, I'd rather sit down at a piano with the score, and get right down to what's important. To appreciate music, I need to feel the human connection, and I don't get that when I'm being spoken to by a computer, instead of by living, feeling, breathing humans.

Synthesisers exist to provide a servicable imitation of human musicians. Music is a wholly human experience, as is the primary reaction we have to music - emotion. When I hear a computer doing a bad impression of a violin, or lots of violins, or a full orchestra, or whatever - my natural reaction is not of pure emotion - it's resentment at the feeling that I am being lied to by an electrical appliance (and by extension, the human operator of that appliance.) A computer has no right to dictate (or even suggest) emotional reactions since it has none and no ability to understand them.

Synthesisers impress me because of their technical magnificence, and I completely appreciate their worth in providing up-and-coming composers a chance to learn about orchestration, and for low-budget productions to get scores... And, to clarify, I have nothing against electronic instruments - what I don't like is synthesisers pretending to be humans.

Ondes-Martinot (in the hands of a skilled HUMAN performer) - absolutely beautiful. Because the appliance is not corrupting an emotion - it is creating one - its circuits create a particular sound, just as the texture of the strings, the shape of the soundbox, and the type of wood used in its construction create the sound of a cello.

Computer trying to do a heartfelt violin solo - ugly, just ugly, and artistically so wrong.

I'm sorry for going on - I just wanted to drop in my own thoughts. No disrespect intended to anybody or their contributions. I hope that you will all take this as an interesting essay rather than as an attack, or an attempt to push my own views on to other people. Have a nice evening. :)

b) It is a temp track extravaganza, with the most obvious blatant theft being the theme in "The Hospital Room", which is a very thinly veiled arrangement of Monica's Theme from John Williams' AI - except it's performed by a crappy singer and a dodgy synthesised orchestra, instead of Barbara Bonney and a large studio orchestra, as it was in AI!

It's that John Williams sound again (heard in the Casablanca track at 1:20 when the orchestra swells); celesta (or glockenspiel), winds in motion, strings playing steady harmonies, harp glissandos. Always reminds me of 1:10 in this track by Yoko Kanno: http://sharebee.com/c8cdcfe1

Does anybody have the mp3s Soule used to make available on his mp3.com page before that site closed its doors? I remember there was one about a sinking aircraft carrier and another piece with chorus that I haven't been able to find. I don't think they were from any games, but the orchestra was really good (maybe the Seattle Symphony again?)

A suggestion: even though this thread has a good trafic, it mostly only attracts orchestral fans. So I recommend you post your rip in the download links section too, so that everybody in this board has the opportunity to grab it. It would be a pity to miss it.

Now that's an awesome orchestral piece if I've ever heard one. Unfortunately, Smetana never composed anything else that was nearly as appealing.

Good news!

I've found an excellent version of Die Moldau by Bedrich Smetana. The performance is remarkable in this one, and the sound is great (MP3 LAME 3.98 VBR -V 0). I greatly recommend to everybody interested in orchestral music to listen to this, an unbelievebly complex and subtle classical piece. Read the article on Wikipedia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M_vlast#Vltava)

Also included the fantastic The Symphony No. 9 in E Minor "From the New World" (Dvořk). Read the article on Wikipedia. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._9_(Dvořk))

Here two of my favourites.

John Scott is not a very known composer however he is one of the best.

It is a pity that composers as Scott or Broughton are composed for subproducts or telefilms nowadays.

The first one is for a movie directed by Charlton Heston, Anthony and Cleopatra (1973), probably between my ten favorite scores ever:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=MO4ODQCU

Track listing

1. Overture (09:17)

5. Pompey (01:58)
6. Cleopatra Deserted (01:38)

17. Pretty Worm of Nilus (01:50)
18. Epilogue: Eternal Rest (02:10)

Total Duration: 00:58:19

The second one is a perfect score for a very bad movie from 1991. I recommend you the listening of this work. It is really incredible, spectacular and beautiful. Here is Shogun Mayeda (or Kabuto):

Guys, as the board *seems* to be a little bit more accessible now, let's get back to serious business.

First, let's begin by a special composer post I enjoy making and people seem to enjoy too. Thanks to Garcia27, I have the opportunity to talk a bit about this wonderful composer, orchestrator and conductor, rather underrated but extremely talented.

John Scott

His website:
http://webhome.idirect.com/~rlevy/

IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0779346/

From Wikipedia: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Scott_(composer))

"John Scott (b. Patrick John O'Hara Scott, November 1, 1930, Bristol, England) is a British composer and conductor.

John Scott (aka Johnny Scott and Patrick John Scott) is a film composer who has worked with some of the world's foremost producers and directors including Richard Donner, Mark Damon, Hugh Hudson, Norman Jewison, Irvin Kershner, Daniel Petrie, Roger Spottiswoode and Charlton Heston, among others.

Scott has scored over one hundred film and television projects. His film scores include the above-mentioned A Study in Terror (1965), Jules Verne's Rocket to the Moon (1967) and Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984). More recently, his TV work has included incidental music for the ITV series Rosemary and Thyme. Of note are his many scores for films and documentaries by explorer Jacques Cousteau.

He is also active as a classical composer (he has written a symphony, a ballet, 4 string quartets, a guitar concerto and is currently working on an opera) and as a conductor (he has also conducted many the world's finest orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and several of Europe's leading orchestras, including the Munich Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Budapest Opera Orchestra, the Lubliana Radio Orchestra and the Prague Philharmonic).

Since 2006, John Scott has been the Artistic Director of the Hollywood Symphony Orchestra."

I'll soon post some of his scores in the thread. Also I'll gladly accept the posting of any of his other scores if someone has them.

Here you can find Garcia27's posts. Two awesome scores any orchestral music fan should absolutely try:

Have you watched this one?

John Williams At Oscars 2002 - Live
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDUIUCprBck&NR=1

A marvellous video I watched many times. John Williams conducts the orchestra of the Oscars for a beautiful medley of famous Hollywood scores. Just grandiose.

By the way, I was listening to your John Williams compilation. I totally forgot how gorgeous was the theme of The Witches Of Eastwick. If you can, I'd appreciate that you post the whole score, please.

Oh yes. Fantastic video Arthierr. I remember seeing this medley on the oscars that year.
It's glorious.

I'll upload soon the Witches Of Eastwick soundtrack.

Ok so I know these are just video links on youtube. But I thought I would share them with you guys because they are absolutely wonderful performances of some of Joe Hisaishi's music conducted and performed by the man himself! :D I don't know if any of these are available on CD/DVD or not but if anyone knows and they are I would love to hunt down copies.

First is a beautiful performance of my favorite piece from Princess Mononoke, just a quartet performance but so emotional and stunningly played

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtPm5GiJ_iM

And the second one is from a concert that was held in august of this year to commemorate 25 years of Joe Hisaishi and Hayao Miyazaki working together. I would have loved to be at this concert. From the information I have looked up on it they assembled a 200 piece orchestra and 400 person choir! Which is awesomely insane! Sadly I cant yet find more stuff from the concert yet, I am looking, but this is the Nausicaa suite.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3nRU7qgilg

Hope you guys enjoy, even though its not an album download :)

*edit....found more parts from the concert :D

JRL3001: Great finds! Thanks a lot.

I started to watch them and it's really a grandiose show. Moreover these videos are very welcome in this thread, as I try to cover many aspects related to Orchestral Music, including the great pleasure to see an actual orchestra playing some beautiful music.

By the way, you're right. The size of the orchestra is INSANE. Maybe it's the biggest one I've seen anywhere. These people are crazy - and awefully loaded!

Sanico: thank you very much for this post. I hope the rest of the score is as great as the piece you posted in your pack.

Also, I'll soon post King Kong, Greystoke and Lionheart by John Scott.

@ Everyone

You can get the full 25th anniversary Hisaishi/Miyazaki Ghibli concert, from a torrent Here (http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=1186305&postcount=87).
The file for the concert is huge (more than 1,1 GB =-O ), but in the end it's totally worth the time of dowloading.
The concert duration is 1h:43m. And every Hisashi music for a Ghibli anime, gets a concert presentation.
The audio is perfectly clear and the video quality it's 100x times better of the youtube links. Guys, I'm not joking.
Since this was broadcasted by the NHK national Japanese TV channel, the concert most likely won't get a DVD/CD release in the near future.
So until then, this is the best format you can get of the concert.

Apologies of my bad English grammar.

The most convenient and widespread (and free!) program to do such rips is VirtualDub http://www.virtualdub.org/

As it's a long time I've done it myself, I'll try to remember the procedure, then I'll do a mini-guide.

For the moment just download the program and open the avi with it. Then go to File > File Information, and it will tell you the audio format.

JRL3001
12-15-2008, 10:20 PM
Tried Virtualdub as well...failed to open the avi file...

gave me the following message.

"Couldn't locate the decompressor for format 'h264' (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a video for windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by windows media player, are not suitable"

arthierr
12-15-2008, 10:28 PM
You don't have the 'h264' codec installed in your computer, then.

In that case I recommend you download and install an extremely useful and complete codec pack I use since years: K-Lite Mega Codec Pack

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_Mega_codec_pack.htm

VirtualDub should be ok with this. Also you'll be able to play almost any existing video format.

Can't you just use http://media-convert.com/convert/ ?

arthierr
12-15-2008, 10:40 PM
Mmh, maybe it would be easier and faster if you only install the x264 Video Codec.

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/x264_Video_Codec.htm

Can't you just use http://media-convert.com/convert/ ?

I don't know this one, but given its name, it seems that it converts the audio. But what we try to do is a lossless rip, without conversion, which would seriously affect the sound quality. Thanks for the tip though.

The first piece is a little melodramatic for my tastes. It's not a bad composition, but it's not a kind of music i usually like to listen.
I enjoyed much more the second track, which is a good piece of "battle" music.
Somehow, save for a few exceptions, Polish composers are somewhat unknown to me, so it's nice to listen unheard music once in a while

Thanks for checking, PetPet.

AVI-Mux is a good alternative to Virtualdub for this kind of task. But I wonder if it'll accept to open the avi if no h264 codec is present.

By the way, as you seem to have the video, the tools and the knowledge, why wouldn't you please extract the audio and make it available for all of us? It would be very much appreciated.

Garcia27: Awesome posts! Thank you again. :)

I'm not at all used to polish composers. So the posting of With Fire And Sword is very welcome. It's one of the things I try to do here: introduce lesser known but talented composers. I'll listen to it and post some comments later.

By the way, do you have this score by any chance?
GEORGE AND THE DRAGON Music composed by GAST WALTZING (2007)

Gedo Senki (Tales from Earthsea): this one was on my listening queue since a long time. I wonder if the music is as great as Hisaishi's one for Miyazaki.

Henry V: I'm fond of the music of Patrick Doyle. I even uploaded a pack of selected highlights of his music, in the post I quote underneath. This score isn't my favorite from him (I prefer Frankenstein and Igor) but it's a very good score anyway, and the choral parts are really superb. Thanks again!

Here's my post about Doyle.

Patrick Doyle

From Wikipedia:

"Patrick Doyle (born April 6, 1953, Uddingston, South Lanarkshire, Scotland) is an Academy Award nominated Scottish musician and film score composer. His collaboration with Kenneth Branagh and the Shakespearean community is well known, but his scoring talents are versatile, and he has composed orchestral scores for a variety of films and film genres, from Disney's Shipwrecked to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. In the latter half of the 1990s, he utilised a combination of synthesizers, chorus, and solo vocals, along with a traditional orchestra."

My personal opinion:

Doyle is a true master of the symphonic form. He knows how to use an orchestra, and does it masterfully. His music is powerful, nervous, very thematic, and has a unique style quite recognizable once used to it (for instance the frequent use of high strings ostinatos, wich I enjoy extremely).

I started being interested in his music after having seen Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994, directed by Kenneth Branagh). The music was extremely good, but excessive, it was too powerful and loud in the movie. Fortunately, the listening of the album was more enjoyable. Doyle wrote a dark, haunting, highly dramatic score for this movie, I consider it as a masterpiece, and it stands as one of the best scores I've heard. Both cues I've included in the pack are my favourites: To think of a story is an absolutely fascinating cue, with its somber and menacing theme, announcing the tragic turn of events further in the story. The Creation is one of the most striking, effective and blood-pumping action cue I've heard.

Patrick Doyle - A Little Princess - Christina Elisa Waltz
Patrick Doyle - Eragon - Eragon
Patrick Doyle - Frankenstein - The Creation
Patrick Doyle - Frankenstein - To think of a story
Patrick Doyle - Great Expectations - Kissing In The Rain
Patrick Doyle - Indochine - The Thunder Storm
Patrick Doyle - Much Ado About Nothing - Overture
Patrick Doyle - Nanny Mcphee - Snow In August
Patrick Doyle - Needful Things - End Titles
Patrick Doyle - Nim's Island - Alex Nearly Drowns
Patrick Doyle - Pars Vite Et Reviens Tard - La coupable
Patrick Doyle - Quest For Camelot Complete - Pista 4
Patrick Doyle - Shipwrecked - Home to Norway
Patrick Doyle - The Last Legion - Sacred Pentangle
Patrick Doyle - Une Femme Franaise - Pista 1

I recommend to anybody interested in the slightest bit in great orchestral music to listen to this compilation. I tried to choose some interesting highlights in many of his scores, hope you'll enjoy them (I sure do!).

I was able to extract the audio of this video using virtual dub 1.6.19 (build 24478/release).

Now I have a wav file that can be easily convert to mp3.

Best.

Thank you. The problem is that if we re-encode the wav, the sound quality will be seriously affected. So it would be better if someone could use AVI-Mux to directly extract the mp3 stream without re-encoding.

Ho ho it was a codec issue. The copy of K-lite on my laptop is about 3 days newer than the one on my desktop and so sound forge was abke to properly extract the audio from the avi file :) Tomorrow (being my first day off from work in a long time!) I will be spending extracting the full audio track and cleaning it up and separating it into tracks for each piece of music :)

Here is the test that I got last night. First piece, the Nausicaa suite recorded of course at the highest quality :)

An important question, though:

Did you re-encode the audio, or did you just extract it without changing anything (no conversion)?

Extracted the mp3 without changing. There was no conversion from one file type to another.

Good evening gentlemen and ladies,
Apologies for my absence - I was on holiday in Germany (via France and Belgium) for the Linz, Bonn, and Siegburg Christmas markets (which were absolutely beautiful) and so have been unable to post. I'm back home now and will be making some seasonal contributions within the next few days. :)

INcidentally, the Ghibli concert mentioned earlier - anybody else having problems with that torrent from Badongo? I download the torrent but every torrent manager I try to open it with claims the torrent is corrupted. Thoughts?

Bye for now,

Thank You for the kind words brothers. I've loved film music since I first heard Star Wars (1977) when I was 6. The first cassette I ever bought was William's E.T. I feel, though, I have to slap myself silly for a GLARING omission I have made. I forgot to include Goldsmith's "The Enterprise" (Star Trek: The Motion Picture). I love that piece. It's when Scotty first brings Kirk to the Refitted Enterprise, from when they leave the spaceport to when they dock on the Enterprise after a flyby. Goldsmith also used a variation in a different arrangement to close the film amidst a star field before the end titles. That still gives me chills. Im probably going to make another one to correct it. Oh and by the way, by the comments from some posters, im glad to see Im not crazy by hearing The Wrath of Khan in almost all of James Horner's compositions...except maybe Braveheart, but definitely in Cocoon. There was a whole section from "Genesis Countdown" in the chase out to sea piece.:)

Yes, most people here are like you. We discovered movie music during late 70's or early 80's when we were very young.

The movies who gave me this virus were Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Krull. Unforgettable emotions...

Other author that I like is the great Bill Conti, his music is very powerful. The most of people only know him thanks to his works in Rocky movies or TV soap operas.

However he is plenty of good pieces, Karate Kid, Masters Of The Universe, The Right Stuff and per example the great North and South.

Today I am going to upload one of my Conti's favorites. Escape to victory, a kind of belic movie (lets see The Great Escape) combined with the world of soccer. In this movie we can find to Sylvester Stallone (the favorite actor of Conti, je, je), the great Michael Caine and of course the best player of soccer ever, Pele playing a game against the Germans during the II World War.

Give the chance to this work, for me is marvelous.

I LOVED this movie! I can still see Max Von Sydows (Nazi Commandant) face as the French fans burst out, spontaneously, with the Les Marseilles acapella after the Allies mounted a rally. You can almost feel the stadium shaking! :)

Enjoy!!

A couple of notes:
1. The Chase (Cocoon), I believe has a sequence in there that is note for note from "Genesis Countdown" from Star Trek II
2. The Hunted "Main Theme" has ALOT of dead air in the beginning, then picks up with the percussion and Taiko drumming. I think this is intentional.
3. "Knives and Bullets" from V for Vendetta climaxes with the War of 1812 Overture where there are explosions in the background.
4. "End Credits" from We Were Soldiers has a Scottish lament running through the middle. This mournful song heard during some of the battle sequences and the aftermath is called Sgt. MacKenzie. An account of a Scottish soldier who fought in similar carnage, it was written by his descendant, Joseph Kilna MacKenzie. It was chosen for the film by Mel Gibson and Randall Wallace due to its haunting, desolate sound, of men prepared to stand their ground in battle for family and friends.

Here are the lyrics: (from Wikipedia)

Scots Tongue

Lay me doon in the caul caul groon
Whaur afore monie mair huv gaun
Lay me doon in the caul caul groon
Whaur afore monie mair huv gaun

When they come a wull staun ma groon
Staun ma groon al nae be afraid

Thoughts awe hame tak awa ma fear
Sweat an bluid hide ma veil awe tears

Ains a year say a prayer faur me
Close yir een an remember me

Nair mair shall a see the sun
For a fell tae a Germans gun

Lay me doon in the caul caul groon
Whaur afore monie mair huv gaun
Lay me doon in the caul caul groon
Whaur afore monie mair huv gaun
Whaur afore monie mair huv gaun

English Translation

Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone
Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone

When they come I will stand my ground
Stand my ground I'll not be afraid

Thoughts of home take away my fear
Sweat and blood hide my veil of tears

Once a year say a prayer for me
Close your eyes and remember me

Never more shall I see the sun
For I fell to a German's gun

Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone
Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone
Where before many more have gone

Thanks a lot, Billie! ^^ That's a very rare album. If you had'n't posted it, that would have been quite a miss for all of us, so it's very much appreciated, because the music is really beautiful.

goisles01: Bravo for these new 2 cds of pure awesomeness. Once, again, only the cream of the crop of Hollywood Movie Music. Maybe if you have time later (no hurry, it will take a lot of time for us to listen to these 6 cds!), you could post a compilation of your favorite anime music, as you seem to have an extended knowledge and collection in it too.

Hey, I was wondering when you'll post something at last in this thread. Welcome to you, mate. :)

By the way, as I really appreciated your last Kotaro Nakagawa posts, I'd like to promote them a bit:

Everybody, here's 2 nice scores from Kotaro Nakagawa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kotaro_Nakagawa), a great anime music composer. I recommend both of them, because they're very good (please just forget the few "borrowings" to Rocketeer and Titanic in Dramatic Baseball), and because they have this typical energetic, brassy orchestral sound I enjoy so much in his music.

Thanks a lot to Sirusjr for uploading these brand new ost.

Man, thats a good idea! Thanx for the assignment! It will be time consuming because except for Yamato or Gatchaman or Captain Harlock, I am more familiar with the very catchy J-pop tunes my son (he's 5) and I sing around the house to. A lot of anime scores are based on Rock or Pop than Orchestra.

Right, so it took a few days to get done. But here it is. The 2008 Studio Ghibli concert. I have pulled the individual pieces of music and set them in their own tracks. Intentions for this is to make a CD I can listen to in my car while driving to work :P But if anyone would like the full audio track including the dialog between the pieces please let me know and I will upload it :)

Hehe thanks arthierr. I share kotaro nakagawa stuff mostly because he is one of my favorite anime composers behind yuki kajiura.

Also jrl3001 you are awesome that is exactly what i was hoping someone would make.

EDIT: Before anyone asks, I don't really pay attention to single tracks in soundtracks very much so i doubt i'll make a collection of individual songs very soon.

Once again, posting in the download links section would be a good idea. Here's a suggestion of title:

Also, if you wish, you can include in your thread the link to the Direct Download rar pack kindly provided by dannyfrench. This way people will have the cd and the video in the same place:

Ha ha, very cute. ^^

I must precise though that I meant orchestral anime music, as it is the speciality of this thread.

You can post whatever you want. People here have been posting all kind of stuff: single tracks, compilations, full scores, videos, or just interesting comments. The sole requirement is that it must be about orchestral music.

Here is something different for today.
I merged all the tracks from the sea battle of Ben-Hur (Rhino 2 CD soundtrack), and created a single track with them.
Some of those tracks from the original CD, have a less than a minute of total duration, so listening all the tracks together gives you a better listening experience.

The original tracks are:
29. Roman Galley
30. Salute for Arrius (extended version)
31. Quintus Arrives (extended version)
32. Roman Fleet (extended version)
33. The Galley (Rowing of the Galley Slaves), Parts 1-4
34. Rest (extended version)
35. Battle Preparations, Parts 1 & 2
36. The Pirate Fleet
37. Attack! (extended version)
38. Ramming Speed!
39. The Battle, Parts 1, 2 & 3
40. Rescue
41. Roman Sails
42. The Rowers
43. Victory, Parade, Parts 1 & 2

Hi guys, like I said before, there are tools that allow editing MP3 files without reencoding. ;)

Yes, there are. :)
But i think the problem was dealing with the issue of extracting the audio of a avi file, without reencode the final mp3 file.

PetPet

Avi is just a container that contains different media streams. Avimux Gui extracts video- or audio streams without reencoding.

Sanico: Thanks for this nice post, now we can listen to this whole scene in one track, without interruption.

A question: how did you merged the tracks?

Our good friend Mr Garcia has posted the tracklisting from the expanded, remastered edition of this score... and posted the horrific bootleg version from a few years ago! ;)

Think the remastered edition was released by Prometheus if memory serves.

And definitely Shostakovich all over it... The finale is absolute plagiarism, from the man who claims directly never, EVER, ***EVER*** to plagiarise. Well done matey, you've taken the entire final two minutes of the symphony, inserted an extra note here and there for thematic consistency, played it a bit faster, and whored it off as an original film score.

Gentleman, I would like to bring the following exhibit of evidence before the court:

http://sharebee.com/bc7eee78

0:00 to 0:46 - Mr Conti
0:46 to end - Mr Shostakovich (finale, Symphony No 5, 4th movement)
