WALL-E is tolerable - it's fun and it's well made, but it's no masterpiece. Up is a cinematic disaster - with some characteristic Pixar moments of pure perfection but turning up in an unfocussed, and confused film.

I'd love Pixar to make a serious movie. I don't mean a comedy with serious bits. I mean a serious movie. (Not to imply that a serious movie cannot contain humour - but a serious movie with moments of levity is a very different beast from a comedy movie with moments of gravitas.)

A deep, complex plot, with issues, and feelings, and emotions, and characters. No crazy adventures; no toys coming to life, helium-powered flying houses, smashed up robots falling in love, rats learning to cook, talking fish, talking cars, superheroes, etc, etc, etc. Just some good old fashioned creativity and storytelling. I know they could do it. I also know that they would never get away with it in the current Hollywood climate. That's the difference between Japan and most of the West right now. Animation is capable of so much more; as proven by decades of magnificent animated films from the USA, the UK, and all over the world. Right now, the West view animation as a medium for comedy and kids. Until it gets out of that rut the West will never see a studio as mature, quality-oriented, and artistically passionate as Ghibli.

Incidentally... one of my favourite animated films is The Snowman. Most people should know it, although it's not quite as mainstream outside of the UK. It was made in 1982, which was a pretty good time for the UK animation industry. Now, thirty years later, the UK animation industry is, by and large, dead as a doornail. In terms of mainstream, we have Aardman and that's it. The studio that made the Snowman (TVC London) drizzled away in the late nineties as did most of the UK's stalwart studios. Channel 4 has commissioned something of a "sequel" to The Snowman to celebrate its 30th anniversary this Christmas; and they have managed to assemble most of the surviving members of TVC London to produce the film. Isn't that a scary thought? Thirty years ago these guys were where it's at. Now, when we want to make a real animated film (not some CGI bullcrap) we have to pull these poor people (most of them in their seventies, eighties, and even nineties) out of their retirement homes and bring them all back for a special reunion... because, to be blunt, nobody does it like that any more.

It's very, very sad.

By contrast, in Japan, I get the impression that things will continue to rumble on. Animation thrives - traditional 2D animation survives alongside CGI, new studios form every now and again, and one gets the impression that the incoming new generation of film makers respect the achievements of their predecessors and genuinely want to produce something wonderful. Yeah, there are crappy studios trotting out crappy movies and crappy TV series to fill in airtime and make some easy dosh... but there is also space for a smaller industry; one steeped in tradition, high standards, and creativity.

By contrast, the UK went from an animation world leader just thirty or forty years ago, to the place where Wallace and Gromit and Bob The Builder comes from, and sod all else. Disney used to contract out to the UK back in the seventies and the eighties. Now we can't even make our own films.

Even Thomas The Tank Engine is now CGI and made in sodding Canada. Whatever happened to us?

The Iron Giant was probably the last WB animated film I can remember and that was a very good one. As for anime, Ghibli is pretty good, but I'm still a heavy Evangelion fanboy, and the new Rebuild films have been turning out rather well. But yeah, here in the West animation is still mostly for kids. Perhaps the next resurgence of anime popularity here might cause some changes. I was rather bummed a few years back with the anime and manga market crash in the States. Signs of hope with the upcoming re-release of Black Lagoon help though, lol.

I really miss those old, even 90's Warner Brothers cartoons, they used orchestras. It was great, and the shows were funny too. Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, Pinky And The Brain, Freakzoid. Spielburg was mostly responsible for most of those, then he created Dreamworks and WB went South.

Those old shows really kept the Stalling/Bradley legacy alive. They didn't have to... but they did. They could've got away with putting any old cheap crap music on those shows... but instead they commissioned real composers to write real music played by real people. Just look at the composer roster - including names like Broughton, Rubinstein, Davis, Debney, Ross, Stone, and MORTON STEVENS for God's sake.

Born in 1984, I was exactly the right age to appreciate those - with a particular soft spot for Tiny Toon Adventures... I will always associate that theme tune with getting home from school!

Ah that was a wonderful time indeed, so many great orchestral scores with hummable themes... shows like Gargoyles and Batman were so good even my parents watched them with me. It was also the time when germany made fantastic dubs and kickass songs for cartoons and anime (while leaving the original score intact). I never fully understand why it all went downhill so fast but now I can only lament the current state of traditional animation in the west (with the exception of france).

One of my favourite film scores including live action over here is still Hajime Mizoguchi and Yoko Kanno's Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. Awesome performance by the Czech Philharmonic. Can't stop playing the CD two years on now.

Intrada just released John Scott's score to King Kong Lives! A powerful orchestral score from John Scott much in the style of his other action scores. Big sweeping thematic orchestral music. Don't miss it.

I wish these lying bastards wouldn't use terminology like "orchestra performance" and "orchestral recording staff" in the booklets when it is quite clear there is no orchestra and no human musicians whatsoever. Even going as far as to credit the synthesiser programmer as "concertmaster". Despicable. A guy with a keyboard is not an orchestra.

Vinphonic

I only bought Valkyria Chronicles so far and that one had live performances by Eminence so I never noticed they use these terms for synth scores as well. Still, I get the suspicion this is all a little musical joke on their part. That, or they are so proud of their (impressive) samples they honestly believe it's the real deal.

I believe that what they're actually going is deliberately misleading illiterate people into believing they are hearing live players. The last score performed by these numbskulls (I don't remember what it was, but it was a Yuzo Koshiro score) tricked many people on this forum. What's better than using an orchestra? Saying you did, 90% of people believing you, and pocketing the money you saved by hiring some guy and a keyboard instead of seventy musicians.

Ahahaha In fairness, my "expertise" is mostly just a mix of Google Translate, some weeaboo foreknowledge of Japanese, some amount of artistic license and free time. Just so happens that last bit is the element of been lacking in lately, between packing for a move come Halloween and writing for SEMO, which is just a nicer way of saying I've been lazy and haven't felt like translating much for awhile. That and word to the wise, I'm much more likely to tackle something I already own and have a vested interest in than take random requests on some Gear Fighter toy thing I've never heard of.

I will be doing Tsunagu, though, so don't worry.

I like what Arnold has done with his Bond scores, and although I'm not a collector of Newman's scores as such, I'm really interested to hear his take on it.

I maybe in the minority but I really enjoy listening to the one-offs over the years (George Martin, Marvin Hamlisch, Bill Conti, Michael Kamen) purely because they are unique and deliver an interesting alternative to the Bond music universe.

WARNING: This edit may be too bright for some listeners, and may sound like crap depending on your Headphones or your tastes.

JOHN WILLIAMS: Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi Brightened Edition.

Now this is NOT the same as ABC's stellar reconstructions of the Trilogy scores, The majority of the sources used were from the Anthology discs, and bits from the SE discs that were not on the anthology.

This edition takes all the material and presents it as recorded, for instance

1. The love theme statement in Speeder Bike Chase/Land of the Ewoks is edited out and restored to its intended place in "Han Solo Returns"

2. The "Jabba More Sinister" insert is excised from the track "Luke Confronts Jabba" and presented as its own track.

3. The Inserts edited together in the opening of the track "The Lightsaber"is presented in its proper placement in "The Emperor Arrives"

4. The Insert in The Ewok Battle is restored via Blu-Ray Rip.

5. The "Brother and Sister" skip is smoothed out.

6. The Original Version of several cues are presented.

7. The Film take of the end credits is presented

8. The Theatrical version cues are used in the main presentation, the SE cues are presented as alternates.

Equalization has been applied to all cues to bring out the harsh quality of the brass, and brighten the sound to remove the muddled and fuzzy sound of the original CD, I believe you will find that it brings the scores sound into the same realm of sound of the great Williams scores of Raiders of the Lost Ark and the like, and make a galaxy far far away sound a little closer.

Tango, are any of the new anime shows promising story wise? I am going to check out Zetsuen no Tempest but I also want to check out a few others if they are solid. I'm open to recommendations.

Hmm Sirusjr,
storywise i would think its K or Shinsekai Yori and if you are open to some comedy it would be the third season of Hayate no Gotoku! or the new Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!.
I havent seen more of the new shows yet, but these looks promising to me ;)
And Zetsuen no Tempest of course :D

Looks like we thought of the same ones. I'll be checking out K Project, Shinsekai Yori and Magi Labyrinth of Magic along with Zetsuen no Tempest.

You just not to have such godly expectations my friend. Problem solved!

Dropping standards is what got us into this mess in the first place. ;)

Edit: Just skimming through the first episode of Gyrozetter. So far, a score not by Naoki Sato or Naoki Syntho... this one is actually by his third brother, Naoki Cheapo. There is an orchestra - a real one, too - but it sounds pretty small. The music sounds something like a not-particularly-thrilling Sentai score - tuneful, cheerful, brassy, lots of beat, lots of electric guitars; you know the formula. Episode 1 is, as episode 1 usually is, probably not a good representation of the show proper... so I don't doubt some good stuff will turn up later on. Either way - my first fear (all synth, or Saint Seiya Omega-esque hybrid crappy fake orchestra with half a dozen strings and a few trumpets to distract from the poxy keyboard sound) has been averted... Can't complain about that.

OST 1 of Space Brothers has been out for a week now (packaged with the Bluray, as so many scores seem to be nowadays) but has yet to appear. Now THAT's one to look forward to.

And Zetsuen No Tempest is fucking amazing. Pardon my language - I don't usually swear (in this thread, anyway) so I hope my curse will be forgiven... but it is WONDERFUL. Positively operatic at times. This is no silly bouncy happy little Oshima drama score. It's not even Nabari No Ou. This may turn out to be her best score to date... and yes, I am very aware of her track record. I think this may be the Warsaw Philharmonic, or perhaps the Moscow Symphony again... it doesn't sound like that claustrophobic French orchestra Oshima has been using for the last few years. We're at full symphony strength here. No cheap television ensemble, no budget cutting, no electronics... a grade A orchestral, symphonic score. Superb orchestrations (even by Oshima's standards), harmonically very interesting, pitch perfect themes, oh, dear, I love it...!

Edit again: Oh, I'm good, I'm really good. Oshima confirms on her website that this is indeed the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. (Well, actually, she posted this five days ago but I swear to God I hadn't read it when I theorised about the Moscow Symphony above!) She has also let slip that Tempest is a 26-episode series, so there will undoubtedly be lots of score. Happy, happy me!

I agree Tango. Zetsuen no Tempest is superb, absolutely delightful score. I could hear the amazing quality of the orchestra throughout the episode.

Sadly, I already gave up on K Project (horrible generic synth score, confusing first episode, but awesome animation) and Shinsekai Yori (decent score, not very interesting plot or characters). Hopefully Labyrinth of the Magi will be interesting.

Okay, I guess I'll go see an episode of Zetsuen then. It seems to go against the grain of what I hate with most anime (ridicules powers, a convoluted plot, and those absurd hair styles and girly looking men).

I think it's worth keeping an eye open and pointed at the Noitamina block. There's often some good stuff coming out of that; anime designed from the ground up to be innovative and creative. Sometimes you end up with some crazy crap that doesn't make any sense; sometimes you get something really, really great. They tend to get decent scores as well...

I have no idea what Zetsuen is actually about - I have this clever technique of "watching" something where I replace the pictures with generic thoughts about my day and remove dialogue and sound effects on the fly. ;)

I confess I was rather taken with the opening scene though, and not just because it was so superlatively scored... The mage is cute and the director is definitely playing the foot fetishist fanservice card... with which I can get right on board... :D

I didn't even think of looking at anime being released around a certain channel. I guess it's because in America, channels really don't specialize in show types or demographics (with the exception of HBO).

Tango, I just watched Zetsuen - and wow, this is the first time in a long while where I can say I want to watch more of an anime. After playing Mage: The Awakening I've been fascinated with the idea of mages/sorcerers in a modern day setting, and the opening episode had a great balance of mystery and narrative. The character design of the main character is a little weird (why the green earbuds and the criss crossed braids?), but even with the exaggerated action scenes I was never really taken out of the anime.

Oh, and the music as you said is superb. Oshima is good, but this is on a whole other level all together.

I'm tempted on if I should just go download the manga to see what comes next, or if I should just be a good little boy and wait for next week's episode.

What on earth is going on?! Two more good ones this year...

1) Code Breaker - Takayuki Hattori back after a three year anime hiatus... a average Hattori-sized orchestra and some very promising music in the first episode. It's Hattori the symphonist, the melodist, the fancy orchestrator - not Hattori the Hans Zimmer clone as has been seen most recently.

2) Magi - now this one just defies belief. The score is credited to Shiro Sagisu, which put me right off. Nonetheless, I skimmed through the show. I found myself somewhat enjoying the score, which was strange enough - it's more mature Sagisu, a million miles away from BLOOD AND GUTS AND BLOOD AND GUTS and all that old bollocks. Moody, low-key stuff for strings. OK, could be worse, right? THEN... In the last four minutes, out of bloody nowhere suddenly comes a fully orchestral, superlatively orchestrated, Warsaw-grade (probably, in fact, actually Warsaw... or maybe even the London orchestra he's been working with on Bleach and Berserk) symphonic score. Themes, check. Rolling timpani, check. Triumphant brass, check. Woodwind flourishes, check. Wait a minute... This is Shiro Sagisu. DOES NOT COMPUTE. (And, dare I say, Masamichi Amano orchestrating again...???)

I doubt that neither of these will unseat Tempest as SCORE OF THE MOTHER****ING DECADE, but nevertheless... We've waited a long time for a A-grade orchestral score in an anime and suddenly two come along at once. Happy Tango!

Toshiyuki Watanabe Era

As much as I may love Kenji Kawai music, I honestly prefer Toshiyuki Watanabe works over Kenji Kawai in these series. In my opinion, Toshiyuki made a much more precise approach in symphonic, maybe because of hearing Seiji Yokoyama and Hiroshi Miyagawa working on this style for this kind of anime series. Although it is a comedy, certain Kenji Kawai tunes to get along, but I still think Toshiyuki worked better. :)
The Sound Notes are the soundtracks for episodes 3 to 8 of the OVA series (Kenji Kawai was in charge of the first 2 episodes). The last one is tehsoundtrack for the episodes 9 and 10 of the OVA. The sad thing for me is that we have some little tracks. The Sound Notes have little music and 3 drama tracks in each. The las soundtrack has some voice acting mixed with the music, but not during it. So you can still enjoy the music.
Hope you guys like it. ;)

** NEW SAHASHI PROJECT ALERT **

1) Mystery drama Koukou Nyushi on Fuji Tv. Skimmed episode 1 so far and score is low-key electronica, but there is about 15 seconds of orchestra *I THINK* in there so hopefully there's some good stuff still to come. The show only started on Saturday and it's 11 episodes, so we have a long way to go... I will of course keep you up to date. :D

2) Police drama special thingy Experimental Detective Totori on NHK. This one is starting on November 3rd; no score has surfaced yet but since it's NHK I think this may be the one to watch.

No new anime or movies announced yet but with the year we're having so far, who knows? :D

At ease, gentlemen.

This is quite an upgrade to the first soundtrack. This time it's a larger orchestra but it actually sounds more like a game score. Highly recommended if you can enjoy some modern sound from time to time.

EDIT: In other news, Girls und Panzer is a lovely score by Hamaguchi, nothing out of this world, but wonderfully old-fashioned.

I'm not sure I can cope with all this stuff. Yet more orchestral score for this season's new anime. I think klnerfan pointed this one out as one to watch out for a few months ago (if it was somebody else - my apologies and respect to you) - and suggested it would be based upon the British Grenadiers March - and sure enough, SPLENDID. Shiro Hamaguchi's Girls Und Panzer - which looks like crap but has a delightful orchestral score. Hamaguchi does indeed write some cheerful military band pieces firmly in that style - think stiff upper lip WWII jolly marches - that are just wonderful - but this is in addition to a nice brassy score with a trademark Hamaguchi theme that'll win over pretty much anybody. It's a small TV ensemble but they get a nice workout. LOVELY. :D

I think members of this thread will enjoy the score for Bravely Default. I hope I am not posting too soon as I haven't finished listening to both discs yet, but it seems to be a nice solid mix of styles. You have the melodic solo instruments, the piano, and the big action tracks as well as the electric guitar. It seems to be one of the more enjoyable game soundtracks of the year. Sadly, many of the tracks seem to be looped, decreasing their enjoyment but you can't do much to change that.

According to Ad Blankestijn (http://www.japannavigator.com/2012/03/japanese-masters-hayasaka-fumio.html):

Yukara (1955) - symphonic suite in six movements, with texts taken from an epic Ainu saga. Not program music, but rather Hayasaka's musical reactions to the ancient saga. With this work, Hayasaka also wanted to reaffirm oriental values in a time if rising Westernization. The suite is noted for its sparse textures, a contrast with Hayasaka's more lush other compositions."

Yet another score to look out for this season. "Robotics;Notes" has some very good orchestral tracks in the first episode. Production values seem high so far and it's a parody of the Mecha Genre (Gunbuster march perhaps?). PV: ROBOTICS;NOTES (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPKYSSRpXDU)

On the other hand, Magi continues to impress with new orchestral pieces in Dungeon Suite and Zetsuen is as good as it gets (and the lady in black is just my type).

For me it's the most promising season so far, music wise. The next big thing would be the news of a new Hellsing music cd for OVA X and 2012 is officially the best year for orchestral music ever.

Oh, well. Win some, lose some. And this year there have been considerably more wins than losses. :)

Someone was requesting some Michiru Oshima scores in the discography thread. I've re-uploaded some of them, but I don't have Adiantum Blue and Gokusen The Movie. Sayonara, Ozu Sensei, Shoumuni and Umineko was also requested, but I think these haven't been shared (Adiantum and Gokusen beats them all? :'D).

Tango, could you share these once again

I can manage that. I can do Adiantum Blue and Gokusen The Movie in FLAC. The rest I'll be re-uploading what was shared here some months ago. Please stand by - having a bit of bother uploading at the moment but when issues are resolved I'll get these going. :)

The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses on Top Score | Classical Minnesota Public Radio (http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2012/10/11/legend-of-zelda-symphony-of-the-goddesses-on-top-score/)

Not a terrible amount of insight, but a few interesting titbits. I totally agree with these guys that Twilight Princess has the most developed score and the suite showcases it beautifully, remaining surprisingly close to the original tracks. Gerudo Valley is still a horror and I wish they wouldn't play so much of it; perhaps in a more (I hesitate to say) nuanced performance it wouldn't be so bad, but all the metrical slamming percussion and blaring brass really make me cringe. Speaking of which, I don't really get how they manage to link rigid adherence to a click track with 'fluidity' - a concert conductor shouldn't be encanned in massive headphones! The thing which most set my eyebrows on edge was the claim that they modelled the arrangements after the spirit of Jerry Goldsmith.. Yep, that's right, "what would Jerry do??". Can't hear the connection myself, but still, nice that's he's a source of inspiration.

I hope one day we get a fuller recording of the whole symphony plus extras, perhaps with a touch of polish.

People don't half like to envoke the word "Goldsmith" to trick people into believing what they've done is worthwhile. These days, any score that isn't in 4/4 time and any arrangement that features more than one brass instrument and unison strings is "Goldsmithian".

The click track is just another reason to hate that terrible "symphony" - I hate to say this (and I hope my American comrades will forgive me and understand my reasoning) but only an American could have conceived of that monstrosity. Imagine, for a moment, that somebody with a brain had been in charge and that they'd hired Kousuke Yamashita and said "Here's a bunch of Zelda melodies. Write a symphony based on these. Do what you like."

Instead, Yamashita is a co-arranger and the bulk of the work is passed over to a third rate Michael Giacchino! (Tilton being the second rate Giacchino, of course.) We get poorly conceived, atrociously orchestrated medleys and nothing more. We get a limp, uninspired performance by a work-a-day orchestra, a drab recording venue, and a Z-list conductor (Eimear Noone for God's sake - WHO???) who apparently can't function without a giant pair of cans on her head giving her interpretative guidance that should be coming from her brain and not from a computer!

Oh, well...

It is an absolute pleasure. :)

I can't believe I'm the first to rip this thing... I was expecting it to show up within seconds of the game being released (last week) but you know the old adage that tells you what you should do if you want a job done properly. ;)

This score is actually scaring me with its brilliance. I mean, it's Hisaishi - it's going to be good. But this really is something else. They say of composers that when you're young, the melodies chase you - but when you're old, you have to chase the melodies. How is it that Hisaishi is able to seemingly pluck these instantly memorable, beautiful themes seemingly from thin air? Any idiot can orchestrate, but to strip it right back to melodies... that's hard. And to not be afraid of a melody, to have the confidence in them - unlike so many modern composers who seem almost terrified of writing something tuneful. What does he do with these melodies? These wonderful, lyrical tunes that would still sound beautiful if they were played on the kazoo? Plonks them right in the middle of this fantastically lush, warm, vibrant orchestration and then... it feels like he stands back and the themes just do what they love to do - frolic joyously in this great forest of orchestral colour.

But then you just have to look at the man in concert to know where it comes from. A composer, an orchestrator, a conductor, a pianist; he is just made of music. Show me a mainstream Western composer who could do all those wonderful things on their own; to stand up there for two hours and conduct a 200 piece orchestra, a full symphony chorus, a giant marching band, a jazz combo, play the piano - each and every note of which he wrote with his own two hands, and look so genuinely overwhelmed with joy. That's what his music does for me.

Anyway, I digress!

..thank you so much for manifesting what my heart sings about in such a clear and free manner...

Turn A's concert is alright, but aside from one new track(Spirit of Place), you could hardly tell the difference from the OST recordings, aside from some unfortunate signs of under-rehearsal here and there. That said, that one new track is a brilliant and lovely elaboration of the B-melody from Spring from the Earth. I'd almost say the concert is worth the price of admission for it alone.

We get poorly conceived, atrociously orchestrated medleys and nothing more.
Yes, the orchestrations are very bad. I tried listening to the Link to the Past one, couldn't make it past the first minute. Compared to the OGC version it sounds like a student project, devoid of any meaningful counterpoint, trying to be as flashy as possible. Trying to sound like a film score, really.

But as bad as the orchestration is in parts, it's really the arrangement that leaves a lot to be desired. When the goal is to write a symphony full of pre-composed tunes, the focus is often on the tunes instead of symphonic story-telling, emotion, and style. The problem lies in the fact each movement was supposed to cover an entire game's soundtrack: a mind-boggling concept for a symphony being that it's no different from the end credits of a movie soundtrack. A symphony is something that develops, builds tension, then finally releases. Each movement in Symphony of the Goddesses is stagnant and boring, despite how many special effects and ostinati are shoved into the underscore. Perhaps they had some contractual obligation to not change the melodies too much? I think I heard something along those lines before when it came to obtaining the rights for arranging vg music.

Comparing to OCG might not be fair, so a good modern, more "Western" comparison would be that "A Fleeting Dream" arrangement from Symphonic Odysseys and how it manages to develop, build tension, and have interesting orchestration at the same time. It helps that the source material is more arrangement-friendly. It also REALLY helps that it is just arranging one thing. Nothing too flashy here, even with the choir. It's too bad the other arrangements for SO weren't quite at that level.

I think the biggest issue is the model for arrangment used throughout is based mainly on Hollywood film scores (and as you mentioned, the Giacchino-connection.) For example, my favourite Zelda track, Ballad of the Wind Fish, is turned into some ostinato-driven, mash-up of film score cliches (some parts sound like Silvestri, even.) It sounds like Giacchino!

Next time someone arranges Zelda music for orchestra, I really hope the model is a classical music one. Similar to how all the great film composers based their film scores in the classical tradition (hint hint).

Bumpety bump - page three already! Shurly shome mishtake.

Well, now... How about a nice upgrade (to juicy FLAC) for one of Toshihiko Sahashi's best scores?

TOSHIHIKO SAHASHI
Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle (aka Ultra Daikaiju Battle)
Studio Orchestra

My rip. FLAC at Level 8. Scans included (but unless you know Japanese there's nothing you'll be able to read except "ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK" and "Printed In Japan"). Track titles in English.

GO4UP (mirrors): http://go4up.com/dl/1x6H787fxCXs
Zippyshare: (Part 1) http://www13.zippyshare.com/v/60801701/file.html / (Part 2) http://www24.zippyshare.com/v/34127630/file.html
Peeje: http://www.peejeshare.com/files/363321725/TS-UGMMB-FLAC.rar.html

Just a handful of years ago, Sahashi was the go-to guy for Tokusatsu scores. He made his Ultraman debut with “Gaia” in 1998, returning to score the Mebius television series and theatrical film in 2006, Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle in 2007, and his final Ultraman score to date, the theatrical film “Superior Ultraman 8 Brothers” in 2008.

This television score is a right little firecracker. If you’re familiar with Sahashi’s other Tokusatsu scores, you’ll know in general what to expect, but this one I think is just a little bit special. Somewhere in the melodic and orchestral world of Simoun / Gundam Seed / Steel Angel Kurumi, it’s predominantly symphonic (moreso than his equivalent Super Sentai scores, though budget obviously dictates the odd trashy electronic cue) and drowning in big themes. There’s nothing quite like Sahashi letting rip in full sci-fi space opera mode and here, he’s doing it with bells on. The orchestra is big enough – not enormous, but not at all undernourished, and the acoustic and recording quality is surprisingly good bearing in mind the dreaded Sound Inn.

All in all, it’s a stupidly fun score with great action (ZAP SPACY, Sortie, Supersonic Surprise), “Oh my God, space is beautiful” sci-fi wonder (Spaceship Pendragon, When A Miracle Happens”, “Triumph of ZAP”, suspense (Close Call), and some splendid orchestral versions of the Main Theme “Eternal Traveller” to round it off.

There is a rip floating aound out there already - and I'll let you in on a little secret. It's mine. This was my first Sahashi score, and my first Japanese CD. About a year before I even knew FFshrine existed, I ripped it and uploaded it to a few Tokusatsu sites I knew at the time, and suddenly everybody in the whole world had that rip. Some credited me, most didn't. They all used my crappy mangled track titles, though! Knowing a little bit more about the show these days, as well as being a bit more skilled at Japanese (in the same sense that a man who had a penny yesterday and has tuppence today has advanced his wealth by 100%) I have revised the track titles and they all make sense now! There were a few serious clangers. One of my favourites is known in my original rip as "HYUUGA DIRECTIVE" - the Japanese title is "ヒュウガの指令" which becomes Hyuuga no Shirei. Shirei (ヒュウガ) is directive, or order. I hadn't the foggiest idea what a Hyuuga was until years later when it finally dawned on me that it's the name of the Captain! So, suddenly it makes sense - the track is called "Captain's Orders". (I went with Captain's Orders instead of Hyuga's Orders because it sounds punchier and makes more sense in context - not to mention the fact that it prevents people falling into the same "what the hell is a HYUUGA?!" trap that snared me...)

In a simular vain, "HARUNA ALLEGATIONS" becomes "Haruna's Suspicion" because I now know that Haruna is a person and that she is suspicious of Rei. Also, for obvious grammar and clarity related reasons, "Terror Envoy" becomes "Messenger Of Fear", "Vicious Chance" becomes "Bad Omen", "Big Monster Game" becomes "Mega Monster Battle", "Twilight Calm" becomes "Calm At Twilight", and "Start Operation" becomes "Operations Commence". "Reach Boris Planet" becomes "Arrival At Planet Boris" because there is actually a planet called Boris in the show.

Anyway, I’m sure nobody cares one iota about any of this and will be skimming my customary essay, thinking “Where are the bastarding download links?!” So, I’ll stop. There, I stopped. Here are the bastarding download links. Well, actually, I lied. The download links are before all this – so you didn’t have to read this at all. Ain’t I a stinker?

AHAHAHA! Tango, I just about fell out of my chair laughing at the title of the album you just posted. Anyway, to steer us back to Gundam, I always Appreciated the music from Gundam Wing, only it always left me a bit cold, it's kinda thin. But on a mid 90's TV series what do you expect? Evangelion was the same if a little meatier in it's production values. I'm just glad Shiro Sagisu has the Rebuild series to revisit the core elements plus new ones of his excellent score. I just wish they'd had more money for the Gundam Wing music. Guess Seed and Seed destiny had more money for it since they used the freekin' London Symphony Orchestra for it. Bit of a waste too since the Seed series' were a bunch of animated fanfictions, poorly written fanfictions at that.

Re-up of Tango's share of Battle Royale 2 in July. Incoming text verbatim quote (forums.ffshrine.org/f92/big-orchestral-action-music-thread-57893-post2030170/#post2030170):

MASAMICHI AMANO
BATTLE ROYALE 2 (2003)
The Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra

Warning; here be dragons. If Amano's notorious musical kleptomania offends you in any way, don't even bother with these; the thievery really is in overdrive. Quality remains high, as one would expect, but originality is at an all time low. Amano lifts whole cues from his previous scores, and even helps himself to a number of other cues from Western films - the most notable of course is Klendathu Drop (from Basil Poledouris' Starship Troopers) appearing almost verbatim (all four minutes of it) as "The Time To Attack". Amano was, by all accounts, in a race against time in scoring these two films - so I suppose you could justify it by saying he did what he needed to do, in order to get the job done. And these are exceptionally good scores, make no mistake.

Warnings aside, here are two powerhouse live action Amano scores full of all the big-orchestra theatrics we all know and love.

Neither are my rips, but sources are trustworthy.

Salat: Tango's thoughts on this in May:

Re: Masamichi Amano = Japan's James Honer

I don't at all disagree - but for what it's worth one of the reasons I can forgive Amano's indiscretions is that he's just so damn good. The Japanese have a habit of "appropriating" music from western films for their scores - maybe because it won't be well known in Japan and conversely it's unlikely that the Western rights holders will ever know, or for that matter, care. There is also the tendency to recycle, a-la the old 19th century opera production lines; that's nothing new. IN times past, composers of all sorts and statures helped themselves liberally to great portions of music from not only their own back catalogues but also their musical peers and predecessors.

This has always made me uncomfortable; it's a topic I have discussed at often overwhelming length; suffice to say I can tolerate a lot when the composer is skilled and when he has made good use of his appropriated material. Cases such as Tyler Bates stealing great chunks of Elliot Goldenthal's music, simply because he didn't have the ability to match the quality of Goldenthal's music, are indefensible. Amano, even when he's helping himself to his own music or whole cues from Starship Troopers, at the heart of it there is still a talented musician putting his own unique spin on the music. Whilst it's not necessarily right - I find myself able to enjoy the results of such thievery.

Incidentally - on Battle Royale 2 there is a cue called Getting Weapons and The Death Of Shugo. It is none other than a straight repeat of the setpiece action cue from Urotsukidoji New Saga written about a year previously, with a different melody overlaid - apart from that it's an absolute verbatim performance of the entire five minute cue. He must really, really like that music. Some of the ideas in the cue are heard in a prototypical fashion as early as Giant Robo I (1991), developed a little further in Super Atragon (1996), and they are still re-occuring as late as Mushiking 2 (2007) although he doesn't repeat the entire cue any more. The secondary subject (the grand, soaring string theme) makes a guest appearance in Sin The Movie (1999 in the cue Elyse's Secret, as a faster action motif), in The Aurora (2000) in a choral cue.

Re: Starship Troopers (Basil Poledouris) references

In BR2, absolutely. I wouldn't say "references" though - Amano steals the entire cue Klendathu Drop (four minutes, thirty seconds,) changes the melody, and calls it "The Time To Attack"!

No film composer, not even Horner or Yoko Kanno, to my knowledge, has stolen five continuous minutes of music... other than Amano, who has done it countless times.

This eight-movement Symphony is based on Jin Yong's beloved martial arts novel "The Return of the Condor Heroes". Chinese-American composer Fu-Tong Wong spent 28 years to bring this symphony alive to all those who love music, literature, and adventures.

About the style, well, what can I say? It's massively conceived, symphonic majesty. It has a certain filmic quality (I mean that in the good way) whilst at the same time has the breadth and scope that you'd expect from a full length symphony. It's not excessively Chinese in sound - it's a very Westernised composition - Dance incorporates Chinese percussion but the language is very European. It doesn't speak with the frenzied committee-driven overkill that you get in pieces like the Yellow River Concerto; it's very direct and very beautiful.

Above all, it's lyrical and very very warm!

To anyone who hasn’t downloaded the Symphony: Hero with Great Eagle yet, don’t miss out! This is a really impressive, sunny, melodic work, with beautifully buoyant orchestration. It reminds me a little of Vaughan Williams in places – not as brooding and melancholic, but very lush, with even a touch of gentile classicism to it. The Prelude is an odd opener, kaleidoscoping through many different ideas and themes, almost like a little sequence of incidental pieces. The other movements all have a defined, individualised character - ‘Fugue’ and ‘Variations’ being particularly expansive.

Happy, happy me. Back off to Japan on November 23rd. Let's hope I don't get the sodding flu the day after I arrive, this time... Still putting final touches to my trip - picking an airline (shall I save some money and go on a rickety 30 year-old Soviet plane, or splurge and go British Airways?) and trying to get a good hotel deal. I'll be staying in the same place as before so hopefully they'll remember me (the guy who yelled at drunk Australians to SHUT THE **** UP in the middle of the night and cleared a paper jam in their printer) - and give me a bit of a discount... :D

Prices are still pretty good after the Tsunami scare. It's a shame the tourist industry isn't picking up at the rate they were hoping for - but at the same time it means I can stretch my money a bit further.

Trying to get a bit more structure this time, rather than my last visit which consisted of "Well, I'm here! Now what?" - I'll have a bit of a plan and assuming I don't get sick again it'll be a fairly full week. Suffice to say I'm planning a number of trips to various record shops (Tower is still there - I was worrying last year that it would close but it hasn't - it's still thriving apparently) including the second hand stores which are all over Shinjuku. Basically I'll be buying anything that's rare and I'll probably pick up a few bonus extras at the same time. In addition, I plan to drink a lot, flirt a lot, travel a lot, go back to the Ghibli museum, catch up with friends, and generally terrorise the Japanese...

Okay, so I am going to revive an old discussion because I just came up with a good addition to it.

A few weeks back some of us were moaning over the lack of good, mature Western animation. I suddenly recalled two - Avatar the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Both work within the parameters of cartoons to deliver stories that respect kid's intelligence and actually have interesting characters. They work as a narrative, in that each episode contributes at least a little bit to the evolving story. And some of the episodes are superbly well done.

If you think that studios are unwilling to green light cartoons of mature caliber, check these out. I think you will find them very enjoyable.

TT, whatever you do, don't take the successor flights to Aeroflop to Japan. Their safety record is abysmal and the stewardesses are still so butch and rude. Because I have friends in Sendai and stay there, I used to take Singapore Airlines for the wonderful service and pretty flight attendants. Now they stopped I take Korean Airlines and change at Seoul for Sendai - the only drawback is the dreadful smell of kimche on the passengers' bodies! You must visit Tōhoku if you want to see what's left of traditional Japan. I'll recommend some places for your itinerary if you like. Kiotsukete.

Ah thanks for the Giant Robo posters, Herr Salat :)

Lately, if a score has no "real" soundtrack CD (Break Blade) or is not available anymore (Giant Robo, Super Atragon), I tend to search for it in FLAC and burn it on printable CDs, make nice album covers and try to dublicate (or fabricate) an OST of my own. I know it's a bit old-fashioned in the days of itunes but when it comes to orchestral scores, I like to own something physical (and my CD collection is not complete without some Amano). It even serves as one of my possible back-ups incase something horrible happens (Tango should know more than anyone ;)).

Has anyone listened to Skyfall yet? I prefer John Barry and David Arnold over this, BUT that does not mean that I didn't enjoy this score. I find it clever and well produced in addition to the fact that Thomas Newman managed to keep the Bond sound, yet in his own style. I am glad that the Bond theme is woven throughout the score and I always like it when the vocal theme is brought into the score, too. Favorite tracks: "Grand Bazaar, Istanbul", "New Digs", "Sevarine", "Komodo Dragon", "The Bloody Shot", "Health and Safety", "Enquiry", "Breadcrumbs", "She's Mine", "Deep Water", and "Mother". The textures and the chords are unique to me especially in the brass on the track titled "Mother". I will admit that this score is certainly entertaining to listen to. I am glad to see that this wasn't another electronic, ambient laden score like most action movies tend to sound like. It is a nice blend of both synthetic and acoustic instrumentation, in my opinion.

For those of you who do not have this and would like it, here is the download thread: Thread 122292

Credit goes to Lightdevil for the upload.

I like Skyfall much more than the David Arnold bond, and i've never really been a fan of the Barry bond scores because of their general jazzy sound. That doesn't mean I particularly like Skyfall, though it does have a few solid moments. They should have trimmed the album down a bit to get rid of some of the more boring tracks and maybe it would be more enjoyable. Still, Newman's iterations of the bond theme are about all the bond I need in my collection.

In other news, new varese club releases are likely to be of interest to people in this thread.
Die Hard 2 (2CD), The Red Pony (Goldsmith), Enemy Mine (Jarre) Boy Who Could Fly (Broughton)[Re-issue of the re-recording], and Man on Fire (John Scott)
I jumped on The Red Pony because it is delightful Americana Goldsmith and sounds like a precursor to Rudy.

Red Pony is marvellous news :D Now if only I could afford the exorbitant import charges!

I'm quite excited by the prospect of Giant Robo's new 4k resto. The jap set is going for astronomical prices. I think I'm right in saying it's never seen the light of day in the UK on DVD, so the chances of a local release are very slim. I'd snap up a blu of Angels Egg as well given half a chance.

At the Play Expo in Manchester recently I made an impulse purchase of Fractale. Watched the first two eps so far and it's crazy but intriguing. I hope it deepens my appreciation of the score further! :)

http://www.adrive.com/public/SXPJ3S/Seven%20Samurai%20-%20The%20Artistry%20of%20Fumio%20Hayasaka.rar

Fumio Hayasaka was one of Japan's top-ranking post-war composers. As a young man he was close friends with Akira Ifukube and was later acknowledged as a formative influence by none other than Toru Takemitsu. For reasons I don't quite understand, his music seems to have become a casualty of time. This disc is one of only a tiny handful of available recordings, and I'm pretty sure this is the first time it's appeared anywhere on the web.

The famous fatalistic Theme of the Seven Samurai opens the programme with nobility and is carried over into an extended elegiac treatment in the following Intermezzo. The real treat for Kurosawa fans here is a generous suite from Rashomon. The high harmonies of the sho, a traditional mouth-organ used in gagaku, hover over the main titles and the ruined gateway to a lost temple. Cues spun from the tales of the woodcutter and the bandit come next, both filled with mystery and incident, leading to a powerful haunting denouement.

Kurosawa came to regard the most significant role of film music as 'counterpoint', not merely 'accompaniment'; an idea perfectly illustrated by the final movement, Masago. At Kurosawa's instruction, this piece is a refitting of Ravel's Bolero, with a snaking oriental melody that builds and sways. It really stands apart from the rest of the score and is therefore placed out of film order. The genius of this scene as a whole, apart from the magical camera moves and astonishing performance by Machiko Kyo, is that it finds the perfect musical expression for a woman becoming gradually more and more hysterical! What we have here is essentially self-dramatising music in the minds of the characters, as they fashion their own stories about what took place.

The concert works Dance Antique and Overture in D are described very well in the booklet note, so I won't go into further detail. I must, however, draw your attention to the final most substantial piece - Movement in Metamorphosis - an outright masterpiece of slowly unfolding lateral variation - like a landscape, a meditation. Hayasaka pursued what he felt to be the 'infinite form' of Japanese painting; oppositions are eschewed in favour of monothematic, monistic expression. It's really hard to say why I find it so moving. Why not give it a try? :)

Here's hoping in the not-too-distant future more of Hayasaka's classic scores see the light of day. He wrote about 100! The poetic scores for Mizoguchi (Ugetsu, Sansho the Bailiff, Crucified Lovers) would be a good starting point. They need to be heard!

That's very thoughtful of you, but I wouldn't have anyone take a chance on a rough-and-tumble score like Kirby on my account! I could perhaps slip Tango a few pieces of silver to keep a eye out on his trip to Japan though.. ;)

The works above are all in a very classical vein, with strong elements of traditional Japanese instrumentation and tonality. Normally that might be cause for concern, but I think Hayasaka really transcends terms like 'fusion' - it's a totally convincing musical language and he's capable of profound utterances. If you can put yourself in the right space I think you'll enjoy it. The Metamorphosis in particular is spare and intense, but totally worth it!

Additional MediaFire links for the Artistry of Fumio Hayasaka. I have omitted the "part1." portion to evade MediaFire's apparently new "split archive blocker" (*prepares another fork for MediaFire*). Hopefully, it works. Just put that ".part1" portion back in before extracting the archive.

Righty ho, sorry they're late folks, but here's Giant Robo 7, Aoi Hitomi, Love Fight, and the Symphonic Suite - all FLAC, all range rips, all originally posted by Grandis - who should be getting the gratitude, not me. I am merely a messenger.

Tried to post these last night but forum seemed to be down - and the night before I fell asleep... so here goes:

Giant Robo OST 7: GO4UP : Upload everywhere ! (http://go4up.com/dl/1aqgm7ABbJcS)
Giant Robo Kanzeban (Symphony): GO4UP : Upload everywhere ! (http://go4up.com/dl/1WU6tCFKvYdM)
Giant Robo Aoi Hitomi: GO4UP : Upload everywhere ! (http://go4up.com/dl/1qe8p3sVyV85)
Giant Robo Love Fight: GO4UP : Upload everywhere ! (http://go4up.com/dl/15xv0HqGPye2)

Feel free to re-upload, transcode, whatever.

Sorry again for the long wait and enjoy. :)

Edit: This Mediafire thing is no biggie. It only happens when a certain threshhold of downloads is reached, and it's easily beaten by a) renaming files or b) simply creating two or more archives - first archive with tracks 1-10, second with 11 to 20, third with 21 to 30, etc. OK, it's a little bit more work - but if Mediafire is still reliable it's probably worth it... :)

I just want to share something here guys, not about the osts. Regarding mediafire.
On my J-Core thread, since Ihave too many links I asked user there to help and check all links to see if they were fine. He pointed me one that was unavailable. At the time I checked the link and there was that message that is comming alwasy lately, but not saying the links were take ndown or that file was deleted. Because the files are still on my account.
My surprise today was user that sad thanks in the that album thread. When I checked the link today.... the link was fine.. 0.o
And I did nothing about it. I was going to re-upload it, but forgot too.
I am thinking that, mediafire is not really taking down our shares, but doing something automaticaly, like protecting the files for a certain period so they cannot be downloadable.
A bit like it is done in Baka.bt with the torrents. When there is a new torrent, you cannot donwload it right away, you will have to wait some minutes to be able to donwload it.
This is the conclusion I came. I have even seen posts of people saying they downloaded the files fine...in a different hour.

Tango - It would help if you would change the cues so that people can actually play these range rips easily on their computer. (Giant Robo)
For those who do not understand how cues work, you have to open the cue sheet in notepad and locate the fifth line that says FILE "CDImage.wav" WAVE and replace the .wav with .flac and then save the cue sheet so that you can load it into your player. Alternatively, the cue sheet can be opened with medieval cue splitter and used to split the range rip into separate tracks.

Tango - It would help if you would change the cues so that people can actually play these range rips.

If they want to play the badly enough (presumably they do because they downloaded them in the first place) they can spend the 30 seconds required to learn how to do so. I uploaded the original RARs straight. My priority was to get the albums back up - not to fritz around making everything just perfect for the "HURR DURR WAHT IS KEW FIEL THIS IS JUST ONE BIG FALC IWANT THES SONGS IN MP3Q UALITY IT MUCH BETTER THAN FLACK NE WAY!!!111" crew. ;)

Well I've never been able to figure out how cuetools works and medieval cue splitter works fine every time. I'm not anal about it because I don't split range rips all that often anyway.

Anyway, thats why I also included in my post how to fix the cue, so people who don't know how to work with it can do it. Mine were already fixed because I had them extracted and played them on my computer prior to the re-upload.

Well, I guess another reason why it pays to be an mp3 fan - I just converted it to .mp3, and then used mp3split -gtk to split it into all of the tracks. Tag and voila, I'm done.

Sirusjr
10-25-2012, 08:55 PM
You don't even need to take that step to convert to mp3 though. Just get the cue to load so foobar shows individual tracks then select an album and say "convert to mp3" and it keeps the tags, assuming they are properly done in the cue sheet.

Doublehex
10-25-2012, 09:02 PM

Winamp!

*cries*

Okay, now you need to explain yourself here tango.

Winamp loads faster, it uses a small amount of CPU, and with the use of the cPro mod (http://cpro.skinconsortium.com/) I find it to be very aesthetically pleasing. Why on earth would I want to switch over to Foobar? For conversion reasons? I have dbpoweramp for that, and I am sure it is many times superior to file conversions that Foobar would be.

evilwurst
10-26-2012, 04:39 AM
I still use winamp for listening to things, partly because I've got a giant mess of plugins for it to handle obscure video game music. Partly because I don't like the ways some other programs handle things, especially the ones that want to be a full system media player file manager with extensive playlist handling and a music store and ad banners and whatever else. I like just clicking the actual file and playing just that one file. Or clicking just a small playlist and having it loop the current track until manually advanced. I never really do anything fancier than that.

But I do sometimes use foobar for losslessly breaking single-file discs with cue sheets down into individual files. That's really the only time I ever run foobar. Like two mouse clicks, maybe three times a year. Heh. I like that it's a completely unobtrusive freeware package with nothing else bundled and no annoying file-association-grabby behavior; it doesn't break anything when I do run it, and the rest of the time it's gone.

jlaidler
10-26-2012, 05:30 AM
Everyone is entitled to their own preferences. Me, I hate Winamp because it puts pauses between tracks whereas Foobar plays everything seamlessly. Plus, I LOVE the VU, peak, and spectrum displays. And I can change the colours of everything to what ever I want at any time. And move things about and add or subtract themand adjust to positioning of things to wherever. And yes, it IS a very useful conversion/division tool. Very robust, and as others say doesn't kill anything or particularly tax the CPU. Even on my dinosaur, lol.

No it doesn't, in fact I spent many years using Winamp, but there was a point were it started to load reaaaaaaaaaaaally slow (for an audio software) and to use to many resources. That's when I discovered foobar. Chech this (old) comparison for example: mp3 players - CPU usage test: Foobar 1by1 Billy Winamp VLC Windows Media Player (http://user.tninet.se/~zmj477m/mp3players/)

I don't know about him, but Winamp loads in about 30s for me when I startup my computer. Now by faster, I did not necessarily mean it was faster than Foobar, but that it was one of the faster media players. Which even going by that guy's research, it was true.

If you found winamp to be loading really slow on your PC, then I would imagine that has to do more with your computer than winamp itself.

tangotreats

I don't want to be the person who causes trouble, here. It's a fact that Medieval is broken and does a whole variety of bad stuff as it works. For that reason - and because Foobar2000 does *everything* you could ever want to do and more - I have never used it and have always recommended against using it to others.

Depending on how you're using it, you may very well use it for a lifetime and not realise. If your intended result is absolute accuracy and seamless cuts, Medieval will cock it up *every single time*. If you want a quick and dirty method of splitting a range-rip with a CUE file and you're not bothered by timing errors and out-of-spec output, it's simple to use and fast.

"It works fine" means different things to different people. To some people, "fine" means "I had one big file and now I have lots of small ones, and they seem to be OK". If that's as far as you're interested in going, detail wise... it's your funeral. ;)

As far as Foobar2000 vs Winamp goes...

START TIME: FB2K starts in 2.4 seconds on my Grandad's twelve year-old Pentium 3 laptop, and in 0.8 seconds on my clapped out three year-old work computer. On my home workstation (Core i7 at 4Ghz, Windows 7 Pro 32 bit) I don't think I have measuring equipment accurate enough to measure it - suffice to say it's instantaneous.

CPU / MEMORY USAGE: Both negligible on both counts. Memory varies depending on use but rarely exceeds 30mb. CPU usage reads 1% when playing MP3 album on Grandad's dinosaur laptop. Reads 0 on both office and home workstation.

Other reasons to use Foobar in no particular order:

1) Every single thing is customisable. EVERY THING.
2) Converter. (Forget dBPowerAmp.)
3) Library management.
4) Out of the box support for almost every codec you could imagine. Seamlessly integrated plugins for everything else.
5) Freeware. No spyware, no malware.
6) Recommended by Hydrogenaudio. (I know some people won't like that but bleh.)
7) Built-in CD burner.
8) Can play directly from ZIP or RAR.
9) Playlists, tagging support, Replaygain support, etc, etc.

Winamp is bloatware and buggy as hell.

Foobar2000 is audio playback and conversion par-excellence. To quote Herbert Von Karajan, "anything else is gaslight".

:D

I use AIMP, which is basically WinAmp without the bloat. I don't use Media Library programs because I don't need them. It's much easier to sort and access music from Windows Explorer. Foobar is still nifty for ripping CDs and FLACs, of course.

I don't see the argument here. Tango already linked to the respective thread over at HA, which clearly demonstrates how broken this piece of software is. So you just choose to ignore that? Seriously, I thought you were better than that...

Yes but the music is still there even if some program tells me it is somehow messed up. I never said I don't believe the analysis there, just I'm not sure it makes me want to stop using it. Also, I have never burned to a CD from a rip I have on the computer so if the cue timing is slightly off it doesn't bother me in the slightest once I have the tracks split.

If you had also linked to some simple how to use cuetools then there would be no argument and maybe I'd use it. The reason I don't split the range rip using foobar like I described above is that doesn't give me an updated cue sheet.

As for foobar vs winamp, they both do things fine and let you do what I consider the most important feature - creating and managing your own playlists. Still there is no reason that you can't use foobar for conversion even if you use winamp for playback (this is what Jlaider said pretty much he does).

to be accurate, that guy's research (I peak the first that I found, so it might be others with different or newer results) states:
"Startup times

Do you know this book (http://press.princeton.edu/titles/7929.html) here? You should read it. Really.

One statement the author e.g. makes it that the huge amount of bullshit (for a detailed description and definition of the term see the book) surrounding us today is due to people not caring for "details" anymore. Convenience is everything and as long as it looks nice and shiny from the outside everything is OK. Shit inside, bling bling outside (take Apple e.g.).

Here we've got exactly such a case: We know that software A has serious bugs and it won't be fixed (not maintained anymore). We've got software B which can without any doubt act as a substitute for A (and can do even more, plus it is actively maintained), but people are just too lazy to migrate from A to B. It's far more convenient to stay with A and just ignore the "details".

My motto is: Do it right and do it right the first time. No compromises, especially if the software which does stuff correctly is right in front of your nose and you just need to extend your hand.

If you had also linked to some simple how to use cuetools then there would be no argument and maybe I'd use it.
Sorry, but it's _not_ my responsibility to supply you with guides. I assume you're adapt enough to look these up yourself, under the condition that you're indeed interested in changing. I've no intention to force anything onto you, but if you blatantly advertise to use broken software here, then you have to expect someone to correct you and point out that this is not a good idea. Which I did.

The reason I don't split the range rip using foobar like I described above is that doesn't give me an updated cue sheet.
I use none of the presented tools here, just cuebreakpoints from cuetools (http://developer.berlios.de/projects/cuetools/) (not to be confused with the aforementioned CUETools) and shntool (http://www.etree.org/shnutils/shntool/).

And foobar2000 SUCKS! Just use cmus (http://cmus.sourceforge.net), it's soooo much better!!!111
No seriously, I also used fb2k a lot in my Windows days. I even use it nowadays, but only for tagging purpose. It's less a media player than a media player construction kit. But with a very good default construction plan. Like Tango said, it's highly customisable and can probably accomodate any requirements you could ask from a graphical media player.

Not all of us are Linux users. ;)

I've had a play with cmus a while back - like most Linux applications, <soapbox> it's unnecessarily rough around the edges and unfinished - but it works well enough. Linux folk like to use applications missing basic features like a GUI and pretend it makes them look cool and smart because they know how to use them and average Joe doesn't.

They justify things to make them feel better - a broken application is one which is fun to experiment with. An incomplete application is lean and slick and if you need to do stuff it doesn't do, you're an idiot because a clever person doesn't need to do those things - if it bothers you that much you should develop a plugin. What? You don't know how to do that? Heh, you idiot, GO BUY A MACINTOSH THOSE ARE GOOD FOR KNOW-NOTHING JERKS LIKE YOU!!!111one

A restrictive application teaches disciplined computer use. I've heard all this crap before. ;) (I'm all for command line and text interfaces - I'm comfortable with them - but it's not the only way of doing things nor is it the best in most circumstances.) </soapbox>

Linux folk like to use applications missing basic features like a GUI and pretend it makes them look cool and smart because they know how to use them and average Joe doesn't.
Actually I don't see a (forced!) GUI as a feature. I makes it almost impossible to properly script the tool. What I like a about cmus it that it doesn't need an X server running and the scriptability through cmus-remote, making it easy to hook it up with almost anything else (lirc, acpi events, etc.)

Also I don't see the big reason for fancy GUIs for media players anyway. Especially for audio players. When I listen to music, then I'm either relaxing on my couch and therefore not in front of the display anyway. And if I'm listening music while sitting in from on any of my machines, then it's because I'm doing something else (browsing the web, writing code/TeX or reading some papers). Neither of this involves having a media player window occluding any of my desktop space.
But yeah, I still remember the days when me and my friends were sitting in front of Winamp, testing all kinds of weird skins (especially those with nude models, etc.) and tweaking around the different visualization plugins and watching in awe the nice pumping animations this produced. *g*

Despite any of that I very much recommend foobar2000. It's a well designed piece of software

I know, I know, I'm just messing. It's a fact, though - the Linux stratosphere is full of broken half-finished stuff that, the harder it is to use, the more some folk like it. It's the anti-Windows community. The "the further away from Microsoft, the better" community. It's a pity because while these people exist it's hard to genuinely appraise the benefits and drawbacks of such systems. I know people who sneer at plug and play - and proudly wax lyrical about the fact that on their operating sysyem - made for smart people, installing a driver involves dropping to a command line and installing half a dozen dependency packages and unpacking and compiling some source code. Look at stupid me, just plugging in his printer and then ten seconds later it works! What a moron! ...Who's printer works and who had to go to significantly less effort to make it work than they did. ;)

I can do that crap - I have to for work. But I don't do stuff the hard way just for the sake of looking like a smart-arse - because it doesn't make you look clever, it makes you look like a sad git. Being genuniely smart means you know when the simple option really is the best one. A lot of these command line Linux fascists don't get that. I do NOT believe (or imply) you are one of them. I merely state that they exist and they're annoying. :awsm:

I think you misplaced confusing with downright bat shit insane.

Now maybe it's because I am not studying CS but rather IT (and this is my first semester at that!) but I have had the privilege of not having to encounter these "characteristic individuals". I don't understand the idea of doing something hard for the sake of it when there is an easier path that accomplishes the same result. It's a mentality I see alot in America, predominantly among my parents' generation, and it drives me bonkers.

I don't think I've actually ever met a Linux command line fascist. The built in package management for the popular distros has been pretty good for years now. Nothing like how it was 12 or so years ago when I tried it out then and had to do mass tinkering exercises to get anything to work.

(I've recently run into some command line stuff and configuration file editing, true, but that's because I'm doing obscure programmer stuff that doesn't have a nice GUI in Windows either...)

Bit late for me to notice since I never placed much importance on all the artist and album name and year etc etc etc etc being in the info for an audio file, but until recently I thought .wav couldn't have all that labeling stuff .mp3s and .flacs and .alac etc had, but as it turns out it can. Foobar puts all that in if I convert flac to wav for playing in the car or burning to CD using Nero (Foobar IS a little slow at burning discs for me, and ripping too hence my primarily using Sony SonicStage 4.2), but turns out .wav files CAN have that crap in them if Foobar converts the file OR rips the disc. Even has an option for adjusting for laser offset. I'm not exactly likely to scramble to re-rp my entire library *shudder*, but I might use it for later CD purchases I archive. Might play around and see about using Foobar to possibly add such data to the existing .wav files, but hardly going to lose any sleep over it. Funny thing though, I have no damn idea if the HDCD decoder is working at all. No HDCD icons popping up, not much in the way of controls, no real discernible difference in sound, though I do have fairly crappy on board audio, lol. But I have MAYBE 5 discs like that in total, so ya know, not the most important thing in the world.

So, decode the FLAC to WAV, do what you have to do, encode it back again. You don't need tags for files you're currently using in a project. You need tags for the finished product.

TARI TARI Music Album ~Utattari, Kanadetari~ (Shiro Hamaguchi) [MP3 V0]
DISC 1 ONLY (I couldn't stand any of the vocal tacks on the second disc and hopefully, you guys won't rip me apart for not uploading it)

Album Information (http://vgmdb.net/album/34176)

Shiro Hamaguchi's usual playful/lovely/peaceful melodies with a small string ensemble and piano. There's nothing too much to say about this album other than that it's a good album to listen to in the background.

Well Tango I have a big external hard drive and I still have plenty of space left on it, and my CD buying isn't so heavy these days because I save my money for bigger things instead of the frequent visits to Rasputin Music I used to make. Also, I transcode flac to wav for the car because my Pioneer car stereos (two of them and the same model) with USB inputs don't do flac, just wav and mp3 etc. Wish I could have found a nice car stereo which can handle flac, but oh well. My Panasonic BluRay player does, but not the car stereo. So far flac is still more universal. So when I rip my discs I rip them to wav so I can just dump it on a thumbdrive and drive off. Bit of a pain in the arse to transcode from flac to wav for a trip in the car when I kinda have to be out the door and want my tunes with me, and as it is I still have 173GB left in the 500GB (465 usable) drive. So doesn't bother me so much.

They are mostly orchestral and contain melodic tracks by Takayuki Hattori with some traditional Japanese sound mixed here and there. There are some action-y cues here but not really bombastic/pronounced as you would expect from Hattori. If you feel like trying just one album, just download the first one as it's more orchestral.

Sample (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzmqxH5uf7k) This might not be very representative of the entire album, but it's the only one I could find on Youtube.

Lol, tango we don't all drive Euro eco boxes. The cars I drive though not particularly new are well built and insulated, and I like having a CD quality source. Plus the speakers aren't so bad. Lhurgoyf
I favour the original Rasputin in Berkley, since the one in SF does in fact suck and it doesn't even bother to swallow, but I usually go to the one in nearby Stockton which is alright. And who said anything about going just for soundtracks? Any used place in the states doesn't really do much in the way of anime and game soundtracks, though I do occasionally get lucky in Stockton's Rasputin. Heard about Amoeba in SF, but haven't been yet. The one n Berkley next to Rasputin in Berkley is alright, but not as good as Rasputin. If I want anime or game soundtracks I go online. Get lucky sometimes on Ebay.

Ah, yes... I wondered when the "American cars are better than anybody else's cars" would start. ;)

I have a 1997 BMW 5-series. It's built like a tank and it's so well insulated I sometimes have to do a visual dashboard check to see if the engine is still running. The sound system is pretty good as car audio systems go but, in the end, it's a means of transportation, not a soundproofed audiophile listening booth on wheels. And it was designed and built in the country that designed the automobile. I can 100% guarantee that anybody who is offended by lossy audio playback in a car is either a) lying, or b) is paying far too much attention to their hi-fi and not enough to the road. ;) I hope you're not one of those guys who belts down the road at 200mph with earthquake inducing music blaring out, pedestrians scattering in all directions and some getting flattened underneath your big, petrol-guzzling American jam jar, and you barely twig them because you're too busy fart-arsing around with your swanky music system...! ;)

About a year ago I was briefly in the posession of a 2009 Mercedes S-class which had a factory-fitted Bose stereo and speaker package. That was massive overkill and that had no need for lossless audio either. And it was a f****g beautiful car which I still dream about... :awsm: :awsm: :awsm:

Obviously everybody's entitled to do whatever they want to do - however crazy it may be... but it's a fact that for in-car playback, lossless audio is a waste of space, a waste of time, and a waste of sound quality. You'd save yourself so much aggro if you used MP3 or something similar; you've just tripled the amount of music you can carry with you, for starters...

With the greatest respect and courtesy, as always. :)

Lol, saying with the greatest respect and courtesy doesn't actually take the sting out of insulting someone, and I certainly touched some sort of nerve there though unintentionally. Was certainly enough for you to come out guns blazing going on about BMWs and Benzes. Chill mate, have a beer or two, the Euro eco box remark was supposed to be tongue in cheek, not an attack. When the Hell did I even mention anything about American cars being better? Personally I'm a Jag man myself, just can't afford one yet. And when did I say anything about swanky stereos? My '97 Mercury Cougar (basically a Ford Thunderbird) may have a "premium" sound system as far as what they offered back then (which has my fairly modest Pioneer in dash CD player running the pre-outs to the car's built in amps), but it's hardly over powered (darn it), and I'm not keen to drive a rolling boombox (I like my hearing intact and not looking like a total burke). Darn thing only has 6X8 speakers. The other car I drive is a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis (Ford Crown Victoria) with the factory speakers in back and front running off of the powered leads from the stereo, so no separate amps or anything. Also the model of stereo which I have in each car only costs 100 to 120 bucks here, sometimes less. And no dude, I make my adjustments to the settings when stationary. And I don't drive like a maniac. Thanks for assuming I do though. And as for gas guzzling, both cars get around 25 to 27M.P.H. highway. Not bad for two fairly big cars having 4.6 litre V8s. Seriously though dude, chill. Wasn't attacking you. I have been to London though. Doesn't matter one stuff one way or another what car anyone drives there, no one goes very far very fast, unless it's 2a.m.

Wow, what's the matter with you? I didn't insult you. I poked fun at the American tendency to laugh at European cars. You didn't touch any nerve of mine, but I think I certainly touched one of yours...

I also deny coming out "all guns blazing" - merely letting you know that I have experience with decent cars (as well as my share of absolute s***-heaps) so you'll know what I'm basing my opinion on.

Chill mate, have a beer or two, the Euro eco box remark was supposed to be tongue in cheek, not an attack.

As (obviously) were my comments to you, even though you decided to take them as an attack. Follow your own advice.

When the Hell did I even mention anything about American cars being better?

You didn't; you took the piss out of European comedy stereotypes (we all drive horrible, cramped French plastic cars that don't go faster than 40mph) and in return I took the piss out of American comedy stereotypes (lambasting anything of non-American origin). Why are you cursing at me, now?

Personally I'm a Jag man myself, just can't afford one yet.

Same here... one of these days...

And when did I say anything about swanky stereos?

Again, you didn't - I joked with you about crazy drivers who go mad over hi-fi equipment to the detriment of everything else in their vehicles.

And I don't drive like a maniac. Thanks for assuming I do though.

I did nothing of the sort. I said "I hope you're not one of those..." - not "I bet you're one of those..."

I guess it's true that Americans don't get British humour. In the interests of international relations, I apologise if I have offended you - it was not my intention.

(I like my hearing intact and not looking like a total burke).

Ten points for British English usage. ;)

Seriously though dude, chill. Wasn't attacking you.

And nor I you.

I have been to London though. Doesn't matter one stuff one way or another what car anyone drives there, no one goes very far very fast, unless it's 2a.m.

Ain't that the truth... were you in the city centre, by any chance? Things are a little better once you get out of there, but you can probably still walk faster than the average London driver most of the time. The curse of the city designed centuries before cars even existed. I live on the edge of London, with countryside about ten minutes down the road, so that's heaps better.

Yes, Suna no Utsuwa/Vessel of Sand/The Story of the Last Symphony has been uploaded before, but I wouldn't mind a lossless re-post, bk530 :'D

Akira Senju's Nichiyou Bijutsukan is available in the iTunes Store and Amazon MP3. I tried searching for it in Amazon.com, but got nothing, so it's apparently not available/region-blocked in the US.

I downloaded every Akira Senju album there is on xiami (http://www.xiami.com/artist/album/id/32233) and I've always wondered how that "latest" album is like. Now I know what it's called and where to get it from for cheap, albeit not in lossless. If there's any Senju album missing, drop me a line :'D (I know downloading from Xiami is super fast, but I have all these files, may as well upload them all to save you "some?!" time).

Xiami asks for a log in during page 5 of the album overview, so use this:

You realise my entire post was an attempt to make peace with you, right? I'm afraid I don't have a lot of respect for people who continue to fight after their opponent has committed to a cease-fire.

Incidentally, Euro eco-boxes have a lot going for them. They're cheap, reliable, and get great mileage. That said, since I'm not European I'm really not bothered whether you dislike them or not. I'd rather be driving one of those than some enormous guzzler - 25MPG is *not* a good mileage even if you *do* have a fancy-pants V8. My main runabout (a Euro eco-box ;) ) does 70MPG. Yep, it's not as nice as a V8... no, it doesn't sound as sexy when you put your foot down... but it'll get be four times as far as yours does for the same quantity of fuel... ;)

Then again, you're in the USA, so you don't get the shit taxed out of you every time you get fuel. We're up to $2.30 USD per LITRE now. Bastarding ripoff merchants.
