THE DARK CRYSTAL

Great fantasy music is an early high-water mark for Trevor Jones

A review by JAMES SOUTHALL

By 1982 Trevor Jones had already attracted some attention in film music circles thanks to his music for Excalibur, but of course to the general public his contribution to that film was rather outshone by the use of other music; but he really put himself on the map with The Dark Crystal, Jim Henson's elaborate fantasty film which was presented as the first live action film which didn't feature any human actors. The original plan had been for an avant garde score, but eventually Henson and Jones agreed that a more traditional, symphonic sound was requried to make the film seem slightly more accessible to audiences.

Over the years Jones has become somewhat renowned for his grand, sweeping themes and that from The Dark Crystal is right up there; given a rapturous performance in the Overture, there's certainly an element of Miklos Rozsa there in its pomp and sweep (something else that Jones would do again later on in his career), and it's a first-rate piece of film music. Whereas sometimes Jones's scores may feature a fabulous main theme but little else of note, The Dark Crystal is - thankfully - not like that at all, with constantly-interesting and colourful underscore which means the album never drags (well, apart from the silly source music, but that's easy to programme out).

He cleverly integrates synths with orchestra to create a rather florid, extravagant sound - a little like Jerry Goldsmith would a few years later in his astonishing Legend score - and there are some grand highlights. "The Funerals" is fiercely intense, fantastically powerful, epic music full of little repeating cells which are tremendously effective; the piece it leads into, "Jen's Journey", may be completely different in style, but is no less impressive - carried by a simple (presumably electronic) wind solo, it's beautifully evocative and quite moving in its own way. "The Skeksis' Funeral" (there seem to be a lot of funerals here) is another grand piece, with an impressive brassy flourish of the main theme.

"Love Theme" isn't exactly memorable, particularly when placed against the main theme of the score, but it's absolutely lovely, and is given a very strong orchestral arrangement. There are still a couple of hints of what the score may have been had the original vision been carried through, with a few avant garde hints in "The Gelfling Ruins" and to a lesser extent "The Great Conjunction", which aren't really like anything else by Jones - but they're so rich and rewarding, it makes me wish he had had the opportunity to write more in that style in other scores.

The score ends in grand style with a seven-minute Finale piece, rounding out what is undoubtedly Trevor Jones's finest score so far. This album marks the first time the score has been widely-available on CD; released to coincide with the film's 25th anniversary, and boasting decent sound, it comes highly recommended. There was a previous CD release of the whole score made available in limited quantities, but that exposed weaknesses far more than it exacerbated strengths, with the lengthy presentation showing that all of the best music was on the original LP anyway. This is by far the best presentation of the score and La-La Land's release is first-rate.

This is "El Mar Mediterrani", which is the music that Ryuichi Sakamoto composed for the Olympic opening ceremonies of Barcelona 92.
It is the last track of Sakamoto's album live compilation "Cinemage".

This is a large track (more than 17 minutes), and the music is sometimes melodic, while the next time turns to be complete maniac and chaotic (8:10 - 12:37), and finish in full glory like any Olympic ceremony must end.
I havent found any reviews for this album or this track alone, so i take this from the album liner notes of this track:

"On a far grander scale is the swirling "El Mar Mediterrani", which begins with tolling fanfares and pulstating drums as if invokes a sense of occasion. As it follows, this episodic piece goes far beyond the typically rousing Olympiad theme in the range of sensation it conjures.
Having fallen in love with Barcelona - from the architecture of Gaudi and the music of Mompou to the intrepid dance company Fura dels Baus that participated in the opening ceremonies - Sakamoto penned an impressionistic soundtrack to a majestic spectacle, with hints of Catalan color, nods to Debussy's La Mer and shades of Sakamoto's past work coming together in a whole of energy and spirit."

The Dark Crystal 2 CD is a long OOP release, unless you want to spent around US $150 at ebay, which i wouldn't recommend you to do that actually.
The disc 2 is the music as presented in the movie, and apart of the music presented in disc 1 (which have the same tracks of the standard edition you own), it is mostly filler music underscore and source tracks with some very bad edits. Not the best way of a listening experience in my opinion.
This is a case where the standard edition with all the highligth tracks, is much better than the complete soundtrack.

Sanico:

Thanks for El Mar Mediterrani, intriguing piece, kinda weird sometimes (too much experimental and contemporary for me), but even the most chaotic parts are texturally interesting. The return of a more traditional, harmonious, melodic development at 13:34 is more my thing.

My favorite part is 1:24: the orchestrations are very well done and accurately and elegantly represent a beautiful maritime landscape. The finale is also quite good.

The Olympic Hymn.
According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympic_Anthem), this piece was originnaly created by a Greek composer named Spyridon Samaras, with lyrics of Kostis Palamas.

It is a very beautiful piece of music in my opinion. I especially like the part (at 1:24 - 2:05 of the A cappella version, for example), right before the end of the Hymn.
I posted on the zip file, 3 different versions:

- Olympic Hymn (A cappella)
- Olympic Hymn (Instrumental only)
- Olympic Hymn (With Chorus and Orchestra)

John Williams & Boston Pops Orchestra - The Sound of Glory (Thanks to Sirusjr)

1. Summon the Heroes [First Recording] - Boston Pops Orchestra
2. O Fortuna [From Carmina Burana] - Boston Pops Orchestra, Tanglewood Festival Chorus
3. Bugler's Dream/Olympic Fanfare and Theme - Boston Pops Orchestra
4. Ode to Zeus [From Canto Olympico] - Boston Pops Orchestra, Tanglewood Festival Chorus
5. Javelin - Boston Pops Orchestra
6. Olympic Hymn [First Recording] - Boston Pops Orchestra, Tanglewood Festival Chorus
7. Festive Overture, Op. 96 - Boston Pops Orchestra
8. Conquest of Paradise - Boston Pops Orchestra, Tanglewood Festival Chorus
9. Parade of Charioteers [From Ben Hur] - Boston Pops Orchestra
10. Toward a New Life - Boston Pops Orchestra
11. Chariots of Fire - Boston Pops Orchestra
12. Olympic Spirit [First Recording] - Boston Pops Orchestra

Writes John Williams in the liner notes: "There is unquestionably a spiritual, non-corporeal aspect to an athletic quest ... that brings us close to what art is all about." Yet spirituality is in short supply on Summon the Heroes, a collection of 13 short pieces mostly composed for or associated with Olympics past, all faultlessly blared by the Boston Pops and its peerless brass. The Vangelis Chariots of Fire theme is here, and after the album-opening double-barreled blast of Williams' title track followed by the "O Fortuna" chorus from Orff's Carmina Burana, one feels reminded that not only the age but even the Olympics are pretty antiheroic these days. Nevertheless, the disc would fill the bill nicely for some kind of sports-watching party, and there are some delightful surprises. Leonard Bernstein's lovely 1981 Olympic Hymn, composed for an annual meeting of the International Olympic Congress, receives its first recording here; it's a simple German-language choral piece with a lyricism rubbed off from the composer's lifetime of conducting Mahler. Listeners might have forgotten that Shostakovich's Festive Overture served as the theme of the boycotted Moscow Olympics of 1980, and indeed the variety of Olympic pieces brought together makes the disc a worthwhile historical document in itself. The inclusion of pieces dating back to the 1932 Olympics (Suk's Toward a New Life) shows just how old the quasi-heroic musical ideal really is, and at the other end of the temporal scale, Michael Torke's Javelin is a pleasant bit of string-laced Neo-Romanticism that does indeed convey the grace of that ancient pastime. The disc, recored at Boston's Symphony Hall in 1996, was originally released that year; the sound ought to hold up well enough for yet another repackaging in 2004.

Simply awesome! I spent an hour this afternoon looking for it at no avail, and here it is thanks to you. Many thanks, Garcia!

Here's a part of a review at tracksounds.com:

Composer John Williams has become as much a part of the fabric of American music as Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, and George Gershwin. In some ways this prolific composer has surpassed even these all-time greats. John Williams' talents have long been recognized far and wide; certainly outside of the obscure confines of film-musicdom. Or course, Williams' film exploits are some of the most recognizable bits of music from the latter 20th Century and they have received their due attention; however, some of the composer's most stunning works have been composed for projects far from the glitz and glamour of big-budget-Hollywood.

International audiences have been getting goose-bumps from John Williams' Olympic compositions for nearly two decades. Smaller, select crowds, but no less international, have been inspired by, encouraged by, and also prodded into self-examination by the John Williams' musical handiwork as well. Now, Sony Classical's much anticipated release, entitled American Journey, features such compositions - some released on CD for the first time. The feature track is John Williams' theme for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah, entitled Call of the Champions, but at least equally anticipated has been the release of the six movements from American Journey. The release goes still further by including other select works from the composer that contain and communicate the same spirit and heart.

Hey guys, been a while I know. RL stuff had my attention for a bit. But I am back and with some music to share :)

Hey, nice to see you back!

Thanks for the scores! I don't know that much the film music from before the eighties, so those are new to me, even though I heard from them without having the curiosity to try them.

I'll try to find some infos about them, I'm quite curious to know a bit more about those.

garcia27: Thanks a lot for THE FIRST OLYMPICS. I red that it's a limited 2,000 copies collector album, so it's very welcome!

I've found a review for those who want to learn about it:

Billie781 and others,

I was really glad to see your "love themes" collection that you had posted earlier to include Maestro. For me, that song sets the standards for the style music I like to listen to when I am studying. It is also the kind of song that I am constantly trying to find more of. For the interest of the board, here are a few other songs which I always look forward to coming up on my study playlist.

Building a family-Life as a House OST
2 songs from the sunshine OST, Sunshine and Kanada's death
Letter from Maiko-from the voices of a distant star OST
Grand Central from the K Pax OST

If anyone cares to listen and has recommendations for other songs with similar "feels" to them, I would be glad to give them a shot

Thanks for posting, guys! :)

xianMD: First, welcome to the thread, as I believe it's the first time you post here. I quickly browsed the pack you posted and I didn't know any of these pieces. They're not all orchestral, but their atmospheric and intimistic nature match very well the romantic topic. More comment after full listening.

Yosemite: you seem to be a big fan of military music! Your first pack was full of it, and Cross of Iron is also in the same vein. Let's try your new selection. Ps: could you please edit your post to put the tracklist? thanks!

Live/Evil (Orchestra) (http://rapidshare.com/files/193501737/EViL__orchestra_version_.mp3)

Story
When Homicide Detective Kang Oh Soo hit a dead end in his investigation of two seemly unrelated murders, except for the Tarot cards left behind at both crime scenes, he sought help from Seo Hae In, a woman with psychometry ability. She revealed that the killers were different in each murder, but the victims were chosen for their connection to a death of a high school boy. Later, the cases proved to have one more thing in common: the suspects have the same defense attorney, Oh Seung Ha.

Seung Ha's defense for his clients severely shaken Oh Soo’s conviction to catch the Tarot Card mastermind. Oh Soo was reminded that years ago he had killed a high school classmate in a fight. He was acquitted of all charges and began his life anew. Now, someone has came back to revenge the boy’s wrongful death by killing those who got him off.

James Horner - The Spiderwick Chronicles NOTE, this is HIGH quality VBR version (This is NOT the low quality transcode that has been floating around here)

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7YDL35UJ
(as requested by Arthierr in another thread and he asked me to post here)

This is actually the first James Horner score I ever listened to and seeing as I assume most of you are at least slightly familiar with Horner, I will post something about the score itself not the compser.
(From Soundtrack.net Review)
Personally the best track of the whole album has to be "Flight of the Griffin". This track is the side of Horner we all love, both melodic, brassy, triumphant, and down right a joy to listen to. After a solid week of continual listening, this track was the one I came back to over and over again. I feel it is the track that best represents this album as a collective. It has such wonderful string and brass work, with humor turns but the high wood winds.

You know Horner wrote it by the use of orchestral bells at their finest. This I think is a defining characteristic of Horner's and one that I enjoy immensely. He just seems to have a knack for writing uplifting yet at the same time dark pieces for the bells. And though the flight of the griffin is triumphant is ends on a rather sad note, no pun intended, but given the pace of the movie and the books its the perfect music for the scene.

For the movie this is a great score, it fits right in with the movie, and even the books, having read them I could tell from each piece of music what part of the books they were in and how it played out and Horner really did do this film justice, but was that ever in question? The composer was nominated for nine oscars winning two. Is this score worth the listen, sure, would I buy it, probably not, I would just borrow it from a buddy if I wanted to hear it more than twice.

Thanks for the score, Sirusjr. I suggest that you edit your post to clearly mention that it's not the bad quality pseudo-192k version available several times in this board, but a true HQ VBR version you posted. Otherwise people will see it and just say: "Spiderwick? Meh, I already have it." I just tried your version and the sound quality is indeed superb.

I'll post Sword of the Stranger in very HQ (lossless, I believe) tonight. ;)

Sword of the Stranger

Music by Naoki Satō

http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=1209816&postcount=1329 (Thanks to Sirusjr)

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sword_of_the_Stranger)

Sword of the Stranger (ストレンヂア 無皇刃譚 Sutorenjia Mukōhadan?, Stranger Mukou Hadan) is a Japanese animated feature film directed by Masahiro Andō and produced by BONES studios. The film follows a swordsman with no name and a golden-haired assassin as circumstances draw them towards a mysterious young boy.

Hunted by the Ming from China, young Kotaro and his dog meet a nameless samurai ("Nanashi") who is haunted constantly by ghosts from his past which has lead him to avoid drawing his sword ever again

Among the Ming is a fearsome Western fighter named Raro, whose only desire is to find a worthy opponent. When both groups clash with a Sengoku-era feudal lord, a proud general, and monks torn between faith and survival, the reason behind the Ming's pursuit tests the bond between Kotaro and Nanashi.

I'd say that is an acurate description of it. It has a number of soothing strings/woodwind orchestral tracks as well as some pounding percussion focused tracks. It really stood out when i watched the anime last night so i highly recommend you check it out.

02-07-2009, 02:53 AM
Nope, sorry, it doesn't exist. The creator of this cover says this (translated from french):

Lady In The Water - The Complete Score (provisional)

This project is purely hypothetical because to date, I still have not heard of any Complete, Expanded, Promo, Recording Sessions, etc ..., this (perfect) score. I rely solely on the music in the film. We must not forget that the film strip is always "squeezed" or accelerated once placed on the DVD (For example this film was released with a time of 1:51 and once on DVD it's 1:45 ...). Thus the band music heard in the vision of the film on DVD is not recorded at the origin, hence, a "Ripples In The Pool" on CD from Decca Official Records lasts 1.49, in the film, about 1.40 .

One of the best free audio/video convertor is mediacoder:

http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/download.htm

I just tried to convert to mp3, and it failed because of the jap names, but when I renamed with english characters it succeeded. Hence I suppose you had the same problem.

If you use mediacoder, I recommend you use Lame and preset extreme or insane as output.

Arthierr, i tried to decode those wavpak files for sword of the stranger and they don't seem to work very well. Is there software you know that works with wavpak besides the general wavpack frontend? I want to convert them to mp3s for portable listening.

Yesterday I converted these .wv files easily to wav and mp3 using XRecode:

http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Audio-Convertors/XRECODE.shtml

It should be work perfectly.

I just precise that with Mediacoder, you don't need to go:
.WV > .WAV > .MP3

You can go directly:
.WV > .MP3

The other advantage is that it keeps all tags after conversion.

Billie: Wow! Another great album for our enjoyment. Taro Iwashiro is a very nice composer, and this OST seems very interesting. Thanks a lot for posting.

I don't know about an hour trip but it is a solid movie and has quite a bit of emotional kick to it as well as plenty of fast paced bloody samurai violence. Now that I have my mp3 version I can upload the mp3 sword of the stranger for you in a little bit. Nicely tagged and everything :P

Today I am going to leave two works that I love.

The first one is from a nice move (yes, it is true, I like it) with Chuck Norris and David Carradine titled Lone Wolf McQuade and with music by the veteran italian composer Francesco de Massi.

This is my favorite theme:

Qqqqqqwe: Nice piece, indeed sounds rather good. It basically uses several classic horror music techniques, so if you want to hear more like that, you should check my Orchestral Horror Pack (http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=1133632&postcount=151), because most of it has similarities with you piece.

He would have been 80 today, if he's still with us.

There is a online radio soundtrack calleld Cinematic Sound, where they play a tribute for Jerry Goldsmith.

Faithful arrangements, spectacular performance!

Featured review by Jason Sander (2000-01-23)

Oh, how I miss the Orchestral Game Concerts. It's a shame that they no longer are held, as I very much enjoy hearing orchestral performances of good video game music. Fortunately, Capcom has come to the rescue with a very successful concert of their very own! With scored arrangements of some of the best music from the Resident Evil series (Bio Hazard as it is known in Japan), and the performance of New Japan Philharmonic, they have created a very memorable album.

I feel the need to reiterate that this is *not* the band BioHazard. Too many people have come up to me and asked that about this album. Rather, it is the recording of a concert which took place last year, where the orchestra performed music from the Resident Evil game series. The concert also served as a promotional venue for Capcom to advertise their new game, Resident Evil 3. Shirts were sold, along with other merchandise, and previews of RE3 were shown.

As for the orchestra... well, they were truly in top form for this outing. The concert opens with a beautiful pipe organ solo by Michiko Aotani, which segues into an arrangement of tracks from the original RE game. A very nice piece to be sure, although unrecognizable to me since I own the Director's Cut of RE and not the original. Ah well.

The real magic of this album becomes appearant in track 3 and beyond. All of the music performed from RE2 and 3 is very easily recognized, and quite awesome! It truly gives the feeling that you are listening to a movie score, and conjures back images from the game as if it were indeed a film and not a video game. This is the way that orchestral albums of game music should be made, with the musicians pouring their heart and soul into the performance. Special mention should be made here regarding track 6, "A Secure Place". I actually became a little irritated with this repetitive music while playing RE2, as it is the safe room music. It played everytime I entered the room and was always the same four bars repeated endlessly. However, in this concert the music is expanded upon, made longer and conjoined perfectly with another haunting piece from later in the game. It is genuinely creepy and beautiful at the same time, the piano being distant and mysterious and the strings really bringing out the quiet power of this music. Very effective!

The one curious track that I found in this album is the final track, "Special End Title". I am not sure at what point this music is played in any of the games, if indeed it is at all. Judging by the title, I would venture a guess that it is played when you complete one of the three games perfectly and recieve the best ending. It seems out of place on this album, which is otherwise filled with creepy, powerful and haunting music - until suddenly one is assaulted with loud electric guitars! It is quite jarring. Not to say it is a bad track... it is enjoyable in its own way, and symphonic rock with a full orchestra behind a rock band is very difficult to find and very welcome in my book. I will say that at times the orchestra has trouble keeping in sync with the rock band, although it doesn't really hurt the piece all that much.

All in all, although there are a few noticable flubs by the orchestra within the performances, this is a must-have album for any fan of the Resident Evil games. Best listened to in a dark room! And keep those doors locked friends, you never know about those zombies.

Maybe it is because I was never really into the RE games before RE4 but I couldn't get into that album. It is certainly a good album to include in any game music orchestral collection.

In fact I listened to this album long ago and forgot it a bit, until Yosemite included the track "The Ultimate Bio-Weapon Medley" in his last compilation, here (http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=1207667&postcount=1285). I noticed then how much this piece (and the whole album too) is gorgeous, so I had the idea to recommend it.

I'll regularly post in this thread links to my favorite orchestral albums. I'll let you guess which will be the next one: a score by Trevor Jones, from a mini-series...

This long 12 minute track was, for an unknow reason, absent from the commercial album. What a great miss it was! Because It's a fantastic piece filled with a great deal of action. ah hah! I shoulda looked a bit closer o.o
thanks a snapload, I might consider downloading FLAC nowadays

So im thinkin bout hostin up all my Orchestral scores/pieces, but heres an honest question for this thread;

What are we generally defining as Orchestral around here?
No voices?
Not much synth?
Obviously anything created by an Orchestra duh?

:D

Sirusjr
02-15-2009, 01:30 AM
I'd say as long as it is actual orchestra. If by voices you mean choral stuff then yes please include it. Anything with a lot of synth probably not so much but as long as most of it is orchestral it should be good. I would be interested in full albums some stuff that is your favorite.

arthierr

What are we generally defining as Orchestral around here?

:D

Good question. It's very controversial and there are several POV, but here's mine:

In the most basic sense, orchestral means played by an orchestra, whether it's real or fake.

To me a piece is orchestral if it's played by common orchestral instruments (fake or real) like:

- a string ensemble
- a brass ensemble
- a woodwind ensemble
- other common orchestral instruments, like harps, glockenspiel, bells, xylophone...
- common orchestral percussions, like timpanis, snares, cymbals...

For instance, the Iwata piece you posted in the previous page is orchestral to me, even though it's a fake orchestra. Is it pop, rock, salsa or techno? No, of course, the only genre I can attribute it to is orchestral, or symphonic.

Another exemple: if Beethoven's symphonies were played by a midi sampler, would that make them hip-hop, electronica, or jazz? No, it's orchestral, and more precisely classical.

But of course there's no comparison between a simulated and a real orchestra, the latter is truly what is meant to be posted here, that's why I try to post only REAL orchestral music in this thread.

It's not too bothering if your compilation includes some fake orchestral pieces, as long as 1) they're really good, 2) the proportion of them is very minor compared to real orchestral pieces.

Billie: Thanks for Robin Hood. I'm usually not a fan of the Prague Philharmonic arrangements, but this track is quite good (even though they seemed to be short of snares, so they tried to replace them by cymbal hits...).

And i also suggest Jones score for the TV series Gulliver's Travels.
Do you happen to have this or know where we could get it? I have just about every other Jones score, so I'd be quite interested in hearing this one, especially since it comes with your recommendation. :)

Also, regarding Dinotopia, I too have the complete 6-CD score (the version that came with the cover scans) and so I've spent an unfortunate amount of time actually fixing all the tags so that now all tracks have names and the same album name (different discs/tracks) and so on. If anyone would like that so they can save themselves the trouble of doing it or trying to sift through the session cue names, then let me know! :)

Garcia: Awesome posts. I'm very curious about Marco Frisina's music. Muchas gracias, amigo.

I'll check your Dinotopia too, thanks.

Concerning the Soncinemad Concert, it's funny because I looked for it in order to make a special Trevor Jones post, but I didn't find it. So it's very welcome. :) I recommend it very much, notably the Last of the mohicans tracks, because in the original score they were partly fake, here it's a real orchestra playing.

This is a collection of SEVEN cds with over SEVEN HOURS of music by the great Bill Conti. I should warn you ahead of time that this collection of music is both orgasmic and repetitive. If you love repeating themes then you will have a blast.

North and South is an Epic miniseries from the 80s about the civil war based on novels. From what i can get off the site, there were two books and each one was made into a series.

I characterize the music as warm, epic, grand, sweeping, powerful. The music is all recorded with full orchestra so there are numerous uses of horns, strings, percussion, everything you would expect. The main melodies in this collection are absolutely stunning. As soon as i heard the samples on Varese Sarabande's web site I had to order them and thanks to them being in my state, I got the music quickly.

I will post the discs here as I get them uploaded although I am too lazy to do scans of the booklets I guess I can do them later if people request.

Two Days with Trevor Jones at the Phone (Second Day) (http://www.bsospirit.com/entrevistas/tjones2_e.php)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trevor_Jones_(composer))

Trevor Alfred Charles Jones (born March 23, 1949 in Cape Town, South Africa) is a South African orchestral film score composer. Although not especially well known outside the film world, he has composed for numerous films and his music has been critically acclaimed for both its depth and emotion.

At the age of 5, Jones already had decided to become a film composer. In 1967 he attended the Royal Academy of Music in London with a scholarship and afterwards worked for five years for the BBC on reviews of radio and television music. In 1974 Jones attended the University of York from which he graduated with a Masters Degree in Film and Media Music. At the National Film and Television School Jones studied for three years on general film-making and film and sound techniques. During this time he wrote the music for twenty-two student projects. In 1981 Jones wrote the score for the Academy award-winning short movie "The Dollar Bottom" and for the short "The Black Angel".

Jones was soon after brought to the attention of John Boorman, who was in the midst of making his Arthurian epic, Excalibur. Although mostly tracked with classical music by Richard Wagner and Carl Orff, Boorman also needed original dramatic cues (as well as period music) for certain scenes. Given Excalibur's modest budget, a "name" composer was out of the question, so Boorman commissioned the up-and-coming young Jones.

Excalibur brought Jones to the attention of Jim Henson, who was making The Dark Crystal, and looking for a composer who was young and eager to work in the experimental, free-wheeling way which Henson preferred. The resultant score is an expansive, multi-faceted work, featuring The London Symphony Orchestra, augmented by inventive use of Fairlight and Synclavier synthesizers, as well as period instruments like crumhorn, recorder, and the unusual double-flageolet, which Jones came across by chance in a music store.

Jones followed Excalibur with fine scores for now-forgotten films like The Sender (1982) and the pirate adventure Nate and Hayes (1983), starring the young Tommy Lee Jones. In 1985 Jones composed one of his best scores, for the acclaimed television production The Last Place On Earth, which chronicled the rival attempts of Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen to be the first to reach the South Pole.

Jones reunited with Henson for the 1986 fantasy musical Labyrinth. David Bowie wrote and performed the vocal tracks for this movie, including the hit "Underground", while Jones provided the dramatic score.

Reflecting that his complex, symphonic score for The Dark Crystal garnered little notice, Jones began to re-think his entire approach to dramatic scoring. Around the mid-80s, Jones' work became more electronic-based (much like fellow film composer Maurice Jarre), eschewing identifiable themes in favor of mood-enhancing synth chords and minimalist patterns. While he did write a somber, chamber orchestra score in 1988 for Dominick & Eugene (which featured classical guitarist John Williams), scores like Angel Heart (1987), Mississippi Burning (1988) and Sea of Love (1989) are more typical of Jones' output during this period.

Jones' return to large-orchestra scoring came with 1990's Arachnophobia, and he provided a light-hearted Georges Delerue-flavoured score for Blame It on the Bellboy in 1992.

Jones' most popular success came later in 1992 with his score for The Last of the Mohicans, and his soaring, passionate music belies the difficulties which afflicted its creation. Director Michael Mann initially asked Jones to provide an electronic score for the film, but late in the game, it was decided an orchestral score would be more appropriate for this historic epic. Jones hurried to re-fashion the score for orchestra in the limited time left, while the constant re-cutting of the film meant music cues sometimes had to be rewritten several times to keep-up with the new timings. Finally, with the release date looming, composer Randy Edelman was called-in to score some minor scenes which Jones did not have time to do. Jones and Edelman received co-credit on the film (thus making this very popular and acclaimed score ineligible for Oscar consideration). Although all were displeased with the circumstances Jones was not fired from the film despite reports to the contrary.

Jones became active in television in the 90s, with memorable orchestral scores for several Hallmark productions, including Gulliver's Travels, Merlin and Cleopatra. He also provided a fun, jazzy, 30s-style score for Richard III, starring Ian McKellen (1995), which features a swing-band setting of Christopher Marlowe's "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" In 1997 Jones worked for the first time with acclaimed director Ridley Scott, providing an electronic/orchestral/rock-flavoured soundtrack for G.I. Jane (1997).

Sirusjr: Awesome! North and South is one of the most acclaimed score by Bill Conti, partly because it's very thematic, with several grand, lavish, romantic and epic themes.

Loch Ness was headed for the big screen a decade ago, to be presented by way of a lavish $12 million production. History shows the film never made it to the cineplex, for reasons as clear as the murky waters of the Loch. To the excitement of music fans, the plenteous production employed Trevor Jones and the world-renowned London Symphony Orchestra to compose and record the score. The folkloric music of the Loch Ness soundtrack CD (Perseverance) is rich in mystery, suspense, warmth and spirit. The score reflects the family nature of the film, equally mixing high strung action and lush romantic gestures when not jigging to the standard bodhran, bagpipe and fife fare of Scottish folk tunes.

Review by Andreas Lindahl

Full blown orchestral scores are becoming more and more common in video and computer games today. This, of course, makes the genre attractive to Hollywood composers (Harry Gregson-Williams recently wrote a rather good score for Metal Gear Solid 2, for example) but it also allows relatively unknown composers to step forward, demonstrating their talents. Michael Giacchino (Medal of Honor) and Bill Brown (Rainbow Six and other Tom Clancy games) are two good examples. Richard Jacques is a third. And his score for the PS2 game Headhunter is an equally good example of a succesful score for a video game. Major game magazine - both online and offline - have mentioned Jacques score together with words and phrases such as "great", "stunning", "evocative" and "perfectly captures the essence of the 'big budget action movie'". I'm sorry if I am starting to sound like a press release here... But, my point is that they are right. It's an excellent score.

Performed by a 67-piece orchestra and recorded at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London, Headhunter is one of the best video game scores I have ever heard, not far from the orchestral bombast Giacchino created for Medal of Honor. Jacques succesfully mixes the traditional orchestral sound with electronics - there's a lot of electronic percussion - without crossing the line, entering the territory the Media Ventures' composers have claimed for themselves. Which is refreshing. Even if I like the sound of Zimmer and friends, Jacques demonstrates that it is possible to mix synths and symphonic instruments in more than one way.

The main theme is a strong, melodic and catchy melody, often performed by French horns backed up by the rest of the orchestra, as well as electronics. It is allowed to really shine in track five, "Jack's Theme", which is one of the best cues this CD has to offer. (Other great cues especially worth mentioning are "Zweibergs Nightmare" and "Final Conflict" - two amazing, huge action pieces.) The CD, yes... Here's the bad news. It's not available. Or rather, it is only available as a promotional release. At the moment. However, an official soundtrack CD will hopefully be made available to the public in the near future.

And if it ever becomes available, be sure to pick it up. Headhunter is action music at its best.

Some personal remarks about this score:

- This score is highly thematic. There are a pretty good number of themes comparatively to most scores coming out these days, and they're all excellent, some even being exceptional.

The main theme, mostly heard in "Jack's theme" and "Main Title", is a bold, epic, heroic, long and rather complex theme. It's just one of the greatest themes I've heard in a videogame. "Jack's theme" is the highlight of this OST, and I recommend you start your listening with this one.

Angela's theme is another beautiful theme, more delicate and emotional, appearing notably in "Meet Angela Stern" and "Angela's Quest".

Greywolf's theme (a villain) is an extremely heroic theme and appears only one time in the score, in the track "Greywolf" (obviously), which is a fantastic boss battle piece, one of the best I've heard.

Ramirez's theme (another villain) is another very beautiful heroic and epic theme, appearing the most in "Ramirez at Bay".

"Final Conflict" is a very good ultimate battle track, but it has one slight problem: the last boss theme featured (and its development) is for a large part a blatant rip-off of David Arnold's alien theme from ID4. However it's very enjoyable in itself.
There are other themes and motifs, I've only mentioned the most important ones. Basically, almost every track develops its own theme or motif, which is extremely impressive and reveals how much Mr Jacques is talented.

- This score is very elegantly composed and orchestrated. It looks like Media Ventures at first, but in fact it's incomparably superior in every single aspect. The heavy use of percussions is actually very well done here, and doesn't only exists to fill the lack of complexity and inspiration. The subtle use of woodwinds (the piccolo, notably) adds a lot of elegance and lightness to the score, thus avoiding the common flaws of MV scores: heaviness and loudness.

Enjoy! :)

Planet Earth (http://www.sendspace.com/file/nc5lv4)

Info from soundtrack-express.com: (thanks to arthierr, too XD)

After the rousing success of The Blue Planet, the BBC is back to doing one of the many things it does best, wildlife documentaries. True, unlike the rather more specific documentaries which go into great detail on one species or habitat, the broad sweep of Planet Earth means that, what it lacks in fine detail, it makes up for in awe inspiring images; a visual orgasm. Even things you thought you'd seen before on TV are filmed in jaw dropping ways, with amazing clarity and immense scope, making our already beautiful planet look about as spectacular as it could without actually going on location. When the first series came and went without a soundtrack album, I remained confident that the BBC wouldn't pass up the chance to release George Fenton's gorgeous music and, right on cue, with the second series, we get this double disc set of Fenton doing what he does best, bold, orchestral scoring that, on screen just enhances the entire programme into an audiovisual wallow of the finest sort.

The Blue Planet had a gorgeous choral theme, but here Fenton's main theme is a little more brief, a beautifully wrought orchestral crescendo that accompanies the opening image of the globe, with the sun rising behind it. It may be short, but it's a spine tingling way to open and Fenton makes brief uses of it elsewhere, transforming it into a elegant, but non-ostentatious, waltz. Of course, in a score such as this, it's the epic moments that stick out in the mind and there are plenty to go round. From the sparkling Discovering Deer Cave, to the glorious Angel Falls and, later, Jungle Falls, each one echoes the splendid photography, whether it's external, as in the latter two, or deep underground in Deer Cave. Of course, this is a wildlife documentary and so, beyond the beauty of the landscape beauty, there are moments for its inhabitants and their moments of drama captured for us to see.

As with Blue Planet, there are moments of tension, excitement, pathos and humour. Of the more dramatic episodes, Hunting Dogs, The Wolf and the Caribou and Dangerous Landing are perhaps the standouts, with passages that could easily come from a big budget action movie score. There are plenty of quieter moments, but Fenton treats them with the sensitivity of an intimate human drama. Of note are The Snow Leopard, with it's intimate arrangement for piano and cello, while Mother and Calf builds from a mournful opening to a dramatic conclusion in The Great Journey. One particularly harrowing moment, as some penguin chicks are Lost in the Storm, features a gentle vocal performance by Catherine Bott - echoing Ralph Vaughan Williams' score for Scott of the Antarctic. For the lighter side, Fenton pulls back from outright comedy, but Fly Catchers, the opening of Fledglings and the witty Surfing Dolphins are a welcome change of pace.

Given the nature of scoring a series such as this, as an album, Planet Earth is rather bitty and lacks the cohesion of Fenton's feature scores, although his distinctive style and hints of the main theme tie parts of it together, but many are melodically unrelated. It does make the first couple of listens a little hard going as almost every track throws up something different and there's not always a strong musical thread to cling on to. However, taken in portions, the music is all very satisfying. The occasional hint of ethnic wail feels a little unnecessary, but Fenton keeps the orchestra in the foreground, rather than leaving the vocal to dominate and the results are surprisingly effective. Anyone who enjoyed Blue Planet will undoubtedly get a kick out of every note here, although the promised feature version of the series will likely result in a more satisfying presentation of Fenton's music as happened with Deep Blue. That caveat aside, still highly recommended.

As a side note, Fenton's music was not featured in the trailers for the series, but used the track Hoppipolla from the album Takk... by Icelandic band Sigur Ros. The album is available here, although don't expect the whole album to be like that - it's quite avant garde most of the time, but worthy of exploration.

Review from Scorenotes.com

A score lover's dream, that's what this is. As perhaps the finest, singular soundtrack collection set I have ever experienced, Tadlow Music presents the complete "El Cid" score with over 160 minutes of music related to the film. The 3 CD set features a comprehensive amount of content from Miklos Rosza's epic score, including previously unreleased material, alternate cues, bonus tracks and more. If you've ever had an interest in Rozsa's work (and by heavens, you should), than this is the key purchase of 2008 for you. While it is priced a bit on the steep side at $39 dollars, it's worth every penny invested since this is no ordinary soundtrack release; it's an even worthy of celebration!

Independently produced by James Fitzpatrick of Tadlow Music, the "El Cid" re-recording was performed by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, led by the skilled baton of Nic Raine. Deciding not to tarnish this classic score a modern sound, the production team insisted on keeping a "vintage" approach to this recording by using a relatively dry studio sound stage, a strategy that pays off with great effectiveness. Indeed, this is the kind of classic fare that should enable everyone to become stoked about the music of this composing great.

What You Need to Know: This is what it's all about, my friends. "El Cid" is one of the finest soundtracks of any generation. Those of you who have any familiarity with this classic will immediately agree. That James Fitzpatrick had enough passion and drive to personally finance this mammoth effort is an achievement that should be applauded. The number of logistics he and his team must have had to confront must have been staggering but I am glad they were able to bring this to fruition -- this CD set is a rare gem.

Rosza's score is driven by a multitude of themes, some of which make only brief appearances in the movie but are fully realized here with this release. To say that the writing is full of depth would be an understatement; Rosza's research, dedication and creativity yielded a score for the ages. The thematic construct is staggering, which is evident from the opening minutes on with the "El Cid" overture, a grand and melodic introduction to the adventure that soon unfolds. The main theme itself is a highly memorable piece of work, injected with spanish inspired notes that resonate in a heroic fashion and gives off a larger than life tone without being pompous. By now, I am sure even if you have a passing interest in film music that you are at least vaguely familiar with this great theme by now. It's originality has withstood the test of time and it remains a triumph even to this day.

All the other notable entries are well presented on the set as well, including the Coronation, the El Cid march and the memorable finale (who can forget Rosza's use of the organ!). Essentials aside, it's the previously unreleased music that truly extends and enhances the listening experience, however. Truthfully, it made it feel as though I was listening to "El Cid" for the first time with this new music. I also submit that this additional content helps fill in the gaps of vacancies I was previously oblivious to, thus making the payoffs of each theme more victorious.

One would think that with over 150 minutes of music that the score might become repetitive or lose its legs at some point. On most occasions, that would be the case but Rosza was quite adept at writing variations for his themes, altering the moods and layers ever so slightly to keep the score on target with the movie and in line as a great listening experience. When you listen to this album, try to note the amount of times that variations occur with the prominent themes alone. It's the work of genius.

If the 2-disc re-recording was not enough, fans of the composer are provided yet another treat with a 3rd disc, this featuring bonus content such as alternate cues, a bonus suite from "Double Indemnity" and video clips from the recording sessions. Indeed, the payoff only gets sweeter with this set! WIth such extravagant, thoughtful content, it's easy to see that this entire project was fueled by admiration of the composer and the term labor of love seems to fit this expedition quite accurately.

Final Score: If all my accolades above were not enough, let me leave you with this: If film music is more than just a passing fancy for you, it is imperative that you add this soundtrack set to your collection. Not only is it a refresh of classic fare, it also provides enough unreleased content to make "El Cid" feel as though it's a brand new release. For a score that was great to begin with, this is an irresistible match.

Great job, James & company, and thank you whole heartedly for your dedication.

Excerpt from jerrygoldsmithonline.com:
"The last score written by Jerry Goldsmith for director Franklin J. Schaffner was a late entry into their filmography but a welcome collaboration producing a fine score. This emotional and majestic score was written for a film about a rogue knight who fails to follow in his father and uncle's footsteps but becomes a hero for a group of lost children in their search for King Richard the Lionheart. It is from a genre that Goldsmith so rarely has had a chance to explore in film but was bettered with the epic score to First Knight in 1996."

If you liked Headhunter, there's another similar score by Richard Jacques you have to try: Pursuit force. Again it's a mix of orchestra and modern beat, and it's quite a solid action score, especially for a VG. It's less complex and rich than Headhunter, because the game itself is very simple (it's basically a car chase game), but Jacques managed to compose some very enjoyable action tracks, extremely effective in such a context. Moreover, he wrote some THEMES (and some good ones), which is quite appreciable.

This album has already been posted early in this thread by Cristobalito2007, but I repost it to follow my Headhunter post.

Thank you for this wonderful assortment of sweet music, Billie. :) I do enjoy a lot orchestral anime music. I'll listen to it tonight and post some comments. (Btw, It's better to post a pack instead of single tracks, like you did with your beautiful WMT compilation ;))

Review by Adam Andersson from Scorereviews:

There is much music written for computer games these days. Medal of Honor is a good example, but games such as Baldur’s Gate also features great music. But much game music is completely created with computers – synths imitating the sound of symphonic orchestras, often. But this is not the case with the score for Infogrames’ 1999 computer game Outcast. Performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in top shape, this is music no one can afford to miss. Skilfully written by young composer and orchestrator Lennie Moore, this is a brassy, percussive, and choral score, with a lot of interesting effects. But it is at many times also tender, beautiful, and above all breathtaking.

The score is mostly very beautiful and at the same time filled with orchestral power, but there are three very good action tracks on the disc: “Soldier’s Camp”, “Watch Out” and “Let’s Fight”. They sound rather alike, and they are actually according to the composer variations on the same themes. The percussion section is frequently used, and the brass punctuates the pieces with short fanfares and themes. The choir makes the music even more tense and uneasy. And through it all the strings play staccato figures, accompanying the whole orchestral mass. It is not easy listening, no, but surely adrenaline pumping.

The six tracks “World of Mountains”, “ The Ancient Forest World”, “World of Snow”, “World of Temples”, “Oriental Spirit” and “World of Marshes” all describe the six worlds in which the game takes place. “World of Marshes” is mostly quiet and unsettling, with low woodwinds and piano, and later slow string lines, going up and down the scale. “World of Mountains” is in the same mood, but with a lot more high strings. In “The Ancient Forest World” we have the same ascending and descending string lines, but here accompanied by ethnic percussion and dissonant woodwinds and piano. “World of Snow” and “World of Temples” are two fantastic choral works, the first with some unsettling effects from the woodwinds and tremolo strings, and broad melody lines with the choir and strings, sometimes joined by brass. The latter track is the score’s most lyrical piece, one of the few that is without any unsettling effects. The choir sings a beautiful melody, also played by strings, with woodwinds in counterpoint and brass accompanying with long tones, on occasion joining the theme. The last “world theme”, “Oriental Spirit” sounds just what the name implies. Here we hear Arabian rhythms and percussion, joined by strings in a beautiful Arabian-inspired theme.

Moreover, the score has a great main title theme with choir and significant brass, which in the “Main Title” is combined with other themes in the score; among them the theme from “Daokas”, a track filled with fast string figures punctuated by brass. Two very short tracks are also on the disc: “Prelude”, a short fanfare-overture, and “Fatally Wounded”, a doomsday theme played by brass.

Then we have the track “Heaven on Adelpha”, the game’s End Credits, and played during the game’s conclusive movie sequence. This is the best track on the disc by far, and it deserves a paragraph for itself. It is a complete piece, and one of the best ever written for game or movie. It begins with slow low strings, joined by the choir, then after a crescendo the strings play a short solo before the choir returns. The music builds, and the brass is heard in the background. The music continues to build over the choral theme and interludes by the strings and the woodwinds, until the piece reaches its climax when the brass knocks in after a choral repetition of the theme. The brass is not there for long, and soon the choral/string interplay returns, and with that the music starts to diminish. A timpani crescendo arrives and a brass chord sounds before the choir, now very gentle, sings some final resigned chords over a single flute tone, and the piece fades away. “Heaven on Adelpha” is in the same style as “The Grand Finale” from Edward Scissorhands, but I think this is better. If “Heaven on Adelpha” would only be sold on a single for $10, I would still buy it. It can’t get better than this.

Here's a part of an interview of the composer. Read the full interview at Gsoundtracks.com (http://www.gsoundtracks.com/interviews/moore.htm)

How would you describe the score and what aspect of it are you most proud of?

The tonality was one of the central qualities of the score. In musical terms, I used a hexatonic or symmetrical scale with the notes C, D#, E, G, Ab, B. This tonality provided me with 6 common chords C, E, and Ab major or C, E, and Ab minor which I used as a sort of “home plate”. Any of these chords could be considered the tonic or point of rest, plus I could also stack them together in combination for a more complex harmony (polytonality). The most interesting quality of working with this tonality meant that as you moved freely from region to region within the game, you felt a sense of the overall musical tone being consistent throughout the game, while each region had its own unique ambience. Everything was connected by intention.

I have to say that being involved early in the development of this game gave me the opportunity to do some of my best work. It allowed me enough time to develop a strong music concept for the game and really explore it in depth without having a time pressure as happens with some games and more notably, film and television composing.

Info to the Movie: National Treasure (Wikipedia)

National Treasure is a 2004 adventure film from Walt Disney Pictures written by Jim Kouf, Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, Cormac Wibberley, and Marianne Wibberley, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, and directed by Jon Turteltaub. It is the first film in the National Treasure franchise and stars Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Sean Bean, Jon Voight, Harvey Keitel, and Christopher Plummer. It is an adventure movie set in the USA about a search for a fictional lost treasure, loosely based on the myth of a code on the back of the Declaration of Independence and involving stealing the document, which leads to a trail of clues and a back-story intertwined with the Knights Templar and the Freemasons.

Plot

The story centers on Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicholas Cage), an amateur cryptologist with a mechanical engineering degree from MIT and an American history degree from Georgetown who comes from a long line of treasure hunters that believe in the legend of a fantastic treasure trove of artifacts and gold, hidden by the Founding Fathers of the United States, and forgotten to all but a few. The first clue was given to Ben's great-great-great-great grandfather Thomas Gates (Jason Earles) by Charles Carroll, the last living signer of the Declaration of Independence, saying simply, "The secret lies with Charlotte".

Using sophisticated computer arctic weather models, Ben, with his friend Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) and financier Ian Howe (Sean Bean), finds the wreckage of a Colonial ship, the Charlotte, containing a meerschaum pipe engraved with a riddle. After examining the riddle, Ben deduces that the next clue is on the back of the Declaration of Independence. While Ben sees gaining access to such a highly guarded artifact as an obstacle, Ian finds no problem in stealing it. In the standoff, Ian escapes and the Charlotte explodes with Ben and Riley inside, nearly killing them.

They attempt to warn the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, and Dr. Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger) at the National Archives, but no one takes them seriously, believing it to be too heavily guarded to be under any threat. Ben thinks otherwise, however, and decides to steal it to keep it from Ian. Ben and Riley manage to steal the Declaration during a 70th anniversary-gala, just before Ian arrives. Dr. Chase, who is holding a replica, is kidnapped by Ian who thinks she has the real one, and Ben has to engage in a car chase to rescue her. As she will not leave without the Declaration, and Ben will not let her leave with it, she is forced to go along with them.

Ben and Riley agree that the only place to hide from the police would be Ben's father's (Jon Voight) house. Despite his father's disbelief in the treasure, Ben manages to reveal an Ottendorf cipher on the back of the Declaration, referring to characters in the Silence Dogood letters. The coded message in the letters leads them to Independence Hall in Philadelphia, where they find special bifocals invented by Benjamin Franklin inside of a brick from the building. Ben examines the back of the Declaration with the glasses, to find another clue. After a short chase, Ian gets the Declaration from Riley and Abigail, and the FBI arrests Ben, who has the glasses.

When the FBI attempts to use Ben as bait to get the Declaration back, Ian arranges to have him escape by jumping from the deck of the USS Intrepid, into the Hudson River, a feat not too difficult for Ben as a graduate of the Navy Diving and Salvage Training Center. Using Ben's father, Riley, and Abigail as leverage, Ian forces Ben to interpret the clue on the back of the declaration, a reference to a secret chamber under Trinity Church in New York City. When they arrive at a seemingly dead end, Ben's father makes up another clue to keep Ian going, telling him a lantern is the clue to the Old North Church in Boston, referencing Paul Revere's ride. Ian goes to Boston with his men, leaving everyone else to die in the caverns.

After Ian leaves, Ben reveals there is another exit that must be through the treasure room. They find a secret passage into another chamber. To their disappointment, they find it empty, and assume that the treasure was already moved. However, they realize a secondary exit must have been created in case of cave-ins. Ben examines the walls of the room, to find a hole the shape of the pipe from the Charlotte. This lock opens a door into the true treasure room, containing artifacts from all periods of history.

When they leave through the second exit and the FBI arrives, Ben discovers that the chief investigator, Special agent Peter Sadusky (Harvey Keitel), is a Freemason. Ben proposes to give the treasure to various museums around the world, with credit being given to the entire Gates family and Riley, with Dr. Chase not being penalized for the theft of the Declaration. However, Sadusky says that someone has to go to prison for the theft of the Declaration, so they fly to Boston, where Ian and his men are breaking the lock to gain entry to the Old North Church. FBI agents emerge from hiding and arrest them under charges of "kidnapping, attempted murder, and trespassing on government property." The U.S. government offers Ben and his friends 10% of the treasure, but Ben only takes 1% and splits it with Riley. With his share, Ben and Abigail buy a mansion once owned by a man who knew Charles Carroll, and Riley buys a red Ferrari 360 Spider. The film ends with Abigail giving Ben a map that leads to their bedroom and smiles a sexually suggestive grin.

The film opened in the United States, Canada, Japan, Spain, and Italy on December 21, 2007. It was released in Germany and The Netherlands on January 24, 2008. It was released in the United Kingdom and Denmark on February 8, 2008.

Plot

Five days after the end of the Civil War, John Wilkes Booth and Michael O'Laughlen, both members of the KGC, enter a tavern and approach Thomas Gates (Ben Gates' great-great-grandfather), a well-known puzzle solver, to decode a coded message written in Booth's diary. Thomas recognizes the message as using the Playfair cipher and begins to translate it. While he does so, Booth leaves for Ford's Theatre to assassinate President Lincoln. Thomas solves the puzzle, a clue to a treasure map, and realizes the men are still loyal to the Confederate cause and have a sinister motive for finding the treasure. Unfortunately, he realizes this too late. O'Laughlen pulls a gun on him, threatening to shoot him if he does not hand over the diary, however he is distracted from Thomas when chaos erupts in the bar over news of Lincoln's assassination. Thomas rips several pages from the diary and throws them in the fireplace. The gunman shoots him and attempts to retrieve the pages, only succeeding in saving a fragment of a page. The dying Thomas gasps, "The war is over," but the man disagrees, stating, "You're wrong about that. The war has only just begun!" and rushes from the bar. As he lies dying, Thomas tells his distraught son, Charles Gates, "The debt that all men pay…"

Over 140 years later, Ben Gates is telling his great-great-grandfather's story at a conference on Civilian Heroes to great acclaim until black market dealer Mitch Wilkinson shows one of the 18 missing pages of John Wilkes Booth's diary, with Thomas Gates' name on it, convincing everyone that Thomas was not only a conspirator, but the grand architect of the Lincoln assassination. Ben sets out to prove the innocence of his great-great-grandfather.

Using spectral imaging, Ben discovers a cipher pointing to douard Laboulaye hidden on the back of the diary page. He travels to Paris, where he finds a cryptic clue engraved on the torch of the scale model of the Statue of Liberty on the le des Cygnes in Paris, referring to the two Resolute desks. Ben heads to Buckingham Palace, seeking out the closer of the two desks. With the help of his friend Riley Poole and estranged girlfriend, Abigail Chase, he is able to sneak into the Queen's office to find an ancient wooden plank hidden in the desk. After Riley sets off the Fire Alarm, he is then pursued by Wilkinson, who, having broken into his father Patrick Gates' house, has cloned Patrick's cell phone in order to track Ben's whereabouts. Wilkinson eventually obtains the piece, but not before Ben manages to photograph the symbols carved into the plank by holding up the plank while running a red light. He then orders Riley to hack into the London police Database and get a copy of the picture from that traffic cam.

At Ben's insistence, Patrick reluctantly asks his ex-wife and Ben's mother, Dr. Emily Appleton, a professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, for help in translating the mysterious glyphs. She does so, but points out that some of the glyphs are partial, leading Ben to conclude another plank must be hidden in the other Resolute desk, which is located in the Oval Office. With the unknowing help of Abigail's new love interest, Connor, a curator for the White House, Ben and Abigail coax their way into the office to see the desk, where Ben discovers that the second plank is missing. However, he does find a stamp bearing the seal of the Book of Secrets. According to Riley, the Book of Secrets contains documents collected by Presidents for Presidents' eyes only, covering such controversial subjects as the JFK assassination, Watergate, and Area 51.

To find the location of the book, Ben manipulates the President's staff into moving his birthday party to Mount Vernon by booking all of the other approved locations. When Ben sneaks into the party, he convinces the President to follow him into a secret tunnel under the House where he confronts him about the book; the President sympathetically warns Ben that his actions will be interpreted as an attempt to kidnap the President, confirming a conclusion Ben and his companions have already reached; Ben is now wanted for committing a federal offense. Appealing to the President's well-known love for history, Ben convinces the President to reveal the location of the book (which turns out to be in the Library of Congress). The President also tells him to read page 47 as well as the information he needs. In the book, Ben finds a picture of the missing plank from the desk and an entry by President Coolidge, who found it in 1924, had it destroyed, and comissioned Gutzon Borglum to carve Mount Rushmore to erase the map's landmarks in order to protect the treasure.

At Mount Rushmore, Ben, Riley, Abigail, and Patrick meet Mitch, who has kidnapped Ben's mother. Mitch provides a clue to the entrance of a cave containing the legendary native American city of gold, Cbola. Despite several traps they manage to find the city, but rising flood waters force them to leave. In the last room before the exit, a mechanism requires one person to stay behind while the others could leave. Mitch forces everyone to let him go first by threatening to kill Abigail with a knife, and a terrified Ben agrees to stay behind. However, rising water forces Mitch to be the last person left. Ben tries to help him out, but Mitch cannot come to Ben without the door closing. Mitch decides to sacrifice himself and allow the others to escape the flooding cavern, and Ben agrees to give him credit for finding the treasure. Ben clears his family's name with the discovery and is cleared of all charges when the President tells everyone that Ben saved his life after the door to the tunnel closed accidentally. Ben also ensures Mitch receives joint credit for the find. The President then asks Ben about what he read on page 47 of the Book of Secrets, to which Ben replies, "It's life altering, sir."

Biliie: Thank you very much for your efforts and for posting NT 1 and 2 in such a meticulous an nicely done form. I'ts really appreciated. :) Now to be honest, I'm not really a fan of Rabin, and of most Media Ventures related artists (Zimmer, Djawadi, Gregson-Williams...), except Powell when he's in good shape (X-Men 3).

Considering NT 1 and 2, I even hardly find them orchestral (except some tracks), because I automatically compare them to the movies they're inspired from: the Indiana Jones series, which I consider as probably the summit of orchestral movie music. But I'm sure there are other people here who will highly appreciate these scores, so It's a good idea to post them anyway! :)

But THIS one...

I like Soule's work in general, and the HP scores are definitely amongst his best material, but when you listen to his and then Hannigan's there's a noticeable discrepancy in quality. Not because Soule uses a sampled orchestra whereas the Hannigan scores are recorded largely live, but because the music itself is of an entirely different calibre.

That being said, are the Soule ones worth listening to? I say yes, for sure. The earliest two are the most distinctive, with the second having a particularly lovely main theme.

*Cough* Soule's Harry Potter scores were all recorded with a live orchestra; the same one, and in the same studio as Hannigan's if memory serves.

Though I do agree; Hannigan's scores easily outclass Soule's, and it's nothing to do with the performance. Hannigan, I believe, is simply the superior musician. :)

Not the entire scores though, danny, or were they? I know the bigger pieces were — had forgotten — but for some reason I seem to remember the less important cues being rendered with his usual ensemble of libraries. Anyway, I could be completely wrong, my point was more about the quality of the writing. :P

Uff! 345.11 MB?! That's a big one. Thanks for posting!

it isn't really orchestral

Then what would that be? Pop, techno, jazz, new age, or world music? If you define orchestral music as a genre, then it's forthright orchestral, because it's performed by all common orchestral instruments (even though they are fake, but that's a matter of performance, not a matter of nature). The writing is also unarguably orchestral, and doesn't sound like any other genre. Given these elements, this is orchestral to me, even though, again, it's performed by a fake orchestra.

Now about the music itself, it's GREAT! I remember listening to it years ago and being overwhelmed by its quality and brilliance. I was already a fan of Sakimoto because of Ogre Battle and other SNES ost, but there he really brought it a level higher, with a very cinematic sound, some tracks even sounding like Goldsmith.

Btw, I personally prefer to use the PSF version (http://tzone.org/~llin/psf/)over the Mp3 one. Why? Because:

It's only 682 Kb!
The sound quality is better, because Highly Experimental v2.09 (http://www.neillcorlett.com/he/), the psf winamp plugin, uses some very HQ interpolation and low-pass filters to significantly enhance the original sound.

Interesting definition. I agree that the composition is obviously orchestral in nature.

This raises an interesting discussion point, though: If we are considering music that is completely 100% synthesised to be orchestral then could we consider music that is 100% performed by an orchestra to be not orchestral?

If we're talking genre, then I maintain that 95% of what is being called "orchestral" isn't and shouldn't be here. FF Tactics has more of a right to be here than National Treasure, for instance; though National Treasure (I pick this at random when I try to think of a score that fits this argument - I do not intend any offense toward folk who enjoy the score; I merely quote it due to genre) is performed by a large orchestra, as far as the composition is concerned, it's not orchestral. In short, the orchestra is not used orchestrally - whereas Sakimoto's composition is using a synthesiser orchestrally and so is appropriate to the genre.

Sometimes you are defining "orchestral" as a genre as in this case, and sometimes you are defining it as strictly related to the physical performance technique. Stop being so damned inconsistent. ;) ;) ;)

ANYWAY - I love this score! And I am constantly amazed at what guys like Sakimoto were doing with these poxy synthesisers... There's 100 times more music coming out of this cheap sampling engine than there is in 99% of film music today. That's a sobering thought. :)

Technically, I guess it's possible, but frankly I can't remember one precise exemple of a piece 100% performed by an orchestra not being orchestral. Even the more pop/rock sounding pieces in the LSO/RPO/Vienna/Munich albums posted some months ago are arranged in order to be at least a little orchestral. If you could give some examples of that, it would be interesting.

Here's something a bit like that.

Ogre -Grand Repeat- is a superb orchestral arrangement of the music from the Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre games. The music was already extraordinary in these games and took the SNES sound to its best level. But this album truly gives homage to the wonderful music of Sakimoto and Iwata by offering it a sumptuous symphonic enhancement.

Note: this version is a HQ VBR one I downloaded long ago. The sound quality is really good, so enjoy!

A rich orchestral arrangement of the music from the Ogre Battle series. About time!

Review by Adam Page

Ogre Battle, even after enjoying U.S. releases on two separate platforms, has still made little press in the game music scene. While there may be strong competition against the strategy game itself, Ogre Battle's soundtrack still has few rivals in its genre. Its semi-sequel, Tactics Ogre, never came over, but an updated version will soon be localized and released on the PlayStation. Several years ago, Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata, who recently scored Final Fantasy Tactics, offered up these rich and engaging soundtracks that seemed to pass right by uninterested American game music fans. Well, American game music fans, sit up and take notice.

Ogre ~ Grand Repeat is exactly what those soundtracks deserved - a full symphonic onslaught of sound and emotion. A little late in the making perhaps, but welcomed with open arms. Players of the PS version of Ogre Battle will recognize half of the first track, "Overture", from the opening of the game. I have not played through the PS edition, but it's likely they used "Neo Overture" and "Revolt" as well. The remaining melodies are from Tactics Ogre, but are so similar to Ogre Battle in theme and style that there is little division between the two while listening.

The arrangements, when compared to their OSVs, are very faithful. There is little to no embellishment of the original melodies, just a fuller and more authentic sound. The performances are fantastic - skilled, stirring, and error-free. Fans of Risa Ohki will be pleased to know that she sings in several songs, but unfortunately has no solo performances and is virtually indiscernible from the other members of the chorus.

Excellent orchestral arrangements like this one are relatively hard to come by for game music fans. I extend my recommendation even to those who are unfamiliar with the game series.

Goisles: Thanks for the Kurosawa albums, very impressive pack! I'm not familiar with this kind of music, but the Toru Takemitsu scores are really good.

Sanico: Any chance you could post your Kurosawa compilation here as well? Because:

Garcia requested it here
It's 90% orchestral

Thank you in advance.

DEMEHTER: Of course I meant you see what you need, AND THEN you request here, in case someone has the one you look for.

Qqqqqqwe and Garcia: right now I'm just passing by very quickly, but I'll check your great posts tomorrow. Thx for posting, guys. :)

This is sorta what I would call pop classical (fantastic vocalist singing amazing songs though) so since I was uploading it for a friend i thought I'd share.
Faryl Smith - Faryl

Faryl went on Brittan's got talent and won and she is really amazing, maybe even close to the greatness of Hayley Westenra. I suggest you guys check it out if you like female classical vocalists.

Digitalstrike posted this amazing orchestral score by Ilan Eshkeri in the film score/vgm hunt thread.
http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=1216599&postcount=8336
It is the soundtrack to a 2009 movie called The Young Victoria and aptly contains a very classical style to it. Considering I believe Eshkeri is a zimmer padowan, the style is completely unexpected even coming off of the fantastic score for Stardust. If it turns out that this just plays numerous classical songs and is not original please let me know.

Here something that I didn't upload but I wanted to share with you. It is a series of cds with suites from the most important works by Basil Poledouris.

All the merit MUST be for horsiewoman:

8 cds

Enjoy!!!

Extremely impressive, Garcia (as usual with you, I have to say). These cds are not only for people wishing to discover Poledouris' music, but also for long-time fans, because there are several suites from scores I didn't even know they existed! Especially in cd 2 and 6.

Thanks a lot for this great contribution. :) *Listening right now to the beautiful suite from "Amazons"...*

Sirusjr: I remember you said some time ago you didn't know very well this composer. Well, these suites are perfect for you: they feature the best parts, the tasty, juicy bits of the scores (even though some scores ONLY have top-notch parts, like "Conan"). Enjoy, this is only the cream of the crop!

I'll try the "Young Victoria" score too, seems interesting.

Billie: Thanks for your recent posts. :) Also when you'll rip your cd of Cosette (or any other), please use my HQ ripping guide, you'll get the best results with it:

Darknightor: after several tries (stubborn hyperfileshare), I succeeded tonight in downloading your Drakensang piece. Sounds very good. Where does it come from, any infos about it? And please, when you post something, at least give a name or something to describe it, otherwise people will just ignore it. Thanks!

Zuneo: if you request some albums posted by Billie in her thread, please do it in her thread, it's more polite.

The 13th Warrior - The Eaters Of The Dead (rejected score by Graeme Revell) 320 Kbps (no tracks names)

Here one very rare score. This is the rejected score by Graeme Revell for The 13th Warrior.

Usually Revell is not my favorite composer but this composition is really good, probably his best, but it was rejected by Michael Crichton (what a shame for Revell)

In this cd predominates ethnic and eclectic music, although it includes interesting action tracks, as the one with 10 minutes of duration.

Finishing I would like to tell that Revell's work is completely diferent from Goldsmith's one, so don't look for something similar.

Hello folks, nice to see you after a few days off. :)

garcia27: Thx for the The Eaters Of The Dead, to be honest I believe that Revell hasn't the 10th of Goldsmith's talent (easy on percussions, dude!), but it's an interesting score anyway. I'll try to post the one by Goldsmith a bit later.

Qqqqqqwe: your post is SPLENDID, but why did you post it without at least a name? Because of that I almost forgot to check it out. If you don't mind, I'll repost it (crediting you, of course) with much more elements a bit later. Thank you!

Sirusjr: Excellent idea to post those in flac. I forgot to say when you first posted it that I'm quite impressed by Quest for a Heart. The orchestral writing in the action cues, notably, is very well done. Nice score.

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO: THE ESSENTIAL MAURICE JARRE FILM MUSIC COLLECTION
MAURICE JARRE

Today Maurice Jarre has passed away. Here you can find his best themes:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9PKB5ART

Over the last decade, Maurice Jarre has gone from being one the top practitioners of his craft, with dozens of hit movies and awards from all and sundry, to being the forgotten man of film music. Jarre has not composed a major score for over five years - the last being his Golden Globe winning A Walk In The Clouds in 1995 - and he is greatly in danger of being overlooked by a whole generation of film music fans the extent of whose knowledge is limited mainly to music of the 1990s. Such an omission would be unforgivable as Jarre is, of course, responsible for some of the greatest themes the cinema has ever known, and boasts amongst his filmography such unforgettable epics as Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago and Ryan's Daughter. In that sense the world was probably due for a reminder of Jarre's vast talent, and this new double CD from Silva Screen certainly does the job.

As is often the case with Silva, the majority of this album is made up of existing material culled from their vast re-recording archives, and which has been already released in some form or another on one of their many and varied compilations over the years. But, as always with the Camden crew, it is the sheer volume of music and the quality of the finished product that more than makes up for the jaded familiarity of most of it. In truth, I doubt very much whether Doctor Zhivago: The Essential Maurice Jarre Film Music Collection will be of much use to hard core collectors such as myself who, with a few exceptions, will probably already own most of the music included. Instead, this is a composer retrospective for the mass market.

Taken on those terms, the package is on the whole a marvellous one, although the presentation is a step below that which we are used to - James Fitzpatrick's notes are more than adequate, but what's with the streaky silver cover art? The City of Prague Philharmonic are as dependable and workmanlike as they always are, and with Paul Bateman wielding the baton the conducting is a notch above what we are used to. And, of course, the music is uniformly excellent, with several tracks meriting special acknowledgement. At some point in the future, it will surely read "Here lies Maurice Jarre, composer of Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia" on the composer's headstone. It is for these two scores that Jarre is most well known and, appropriately, the album devotes a large proportion of its running time to both of them - 17 minutes for Lawrence, 12 for Zhivago. The thunderous percussion opening and broad, sweeping, sun-kissed theme of the former is the stuff of film music legend, while the latter's striking cimbalom-led melody went on to become both a critical and commercial hit, as well as bagging an Oscar for its composer.

The vast majority of Jarre's other famous works are included. The rapturous 'Barn Raising' cue from the Amish murder-mystery Witness is heard twice, both in its original electronic form and re-orchestrated for a full symphony, and there are celebratory performances of the old fashioned foxtrot 'Adela's Theme' from A Passage To India, the superb accompaniment he wrote for the epic TV mini-series Jesus of Nazareth, the heartbreaking closing motif from the 1990 hit Ghost, the dangerously attractive woodwind melody from Fatal Attraction, and a lengthy suite of the subtly Irish-flavoured melancholy he wrote for David Lean's classic Ryan's Daughter. Equally impressive are the knockabout main themes from the westerns Villa Rides and Red Sun, and the soaring finale from Wolfgang Peterson's underrated science fiction parable Enemy Mine, which gradually grows to feature a extraordinary gurgling choir and a lush string orchestra, augmented by appropriately atmospheric synthesised textures.

In addition to these, and despite the fact that most of the album is culled from existing material, there were still a few scores that were new to me. I was especially impressed with the stark, solitary music for the 1968 movie The Fixer, which was written mainly for percussion and solo violin, and boasts a desolate, almost inhuman quality that reminds one a little of Schindler's List. At the other end of the scale, Jarre's thunderous action music for the 1985 Mel Gibson vehicle Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is all out orchestral warfare, fuelled by a huge brass section, a mass of percussion, a lovely choir, and a dense yet heroic central theme.

Having said that, and although they mark important points in Jarre's career, I personally would have preferred it if Silva had left off the bland synth lines of The Mosquito Coast, The Year of Living Dangerously and No Way Out, and instead included a couple of themes from his less well-known orchestral works - Mohammed Messenger of God, Grand Prix, the lovely Prancer, or some of his early French works perhaps? It has always been a sore point with me the way in which Jarre seems to have embraced synthesised music for convenience rather than for any particular musical reason, especially in scores such as Dead Poets Society, which would have benefited enormously from increased orchestral content. But that is a discussion for another time, as it really has no bearing on the overall quality of the CD, and has nothing to do with Silva or Mark Ayres either.

For Jarre novices, or for anyone with limited funds who would appreciate a decent overview of his career to date, Doctor Zhivago: The Essential Maurice Jarre Film Music Collection is a worthwhile purchase. All the important landmarks of his career are covered, the styles are wide and varied, and the performances are good enough to be comparable with the originals. At the time of writing, Jarre has just been signed to score a new film in 2000 - Sunshine - which will also have a soundtrack album to accompany it. With that score, and this collection, it could be that Maurice is finally being welcomed back into the fold where he belongs.
