Yep. I can post the whole series in fact. There are 10 cds in total.

Posted by Qqqqqqwe a bit earlier in this thread, this album deserves much more attention, so I'll repost it with more infos. It's an arrangement of the music of SEGA Japan‘s arcade game series World Club Champion Football which was recorded with a live orchestra and choir in Prague. The orchestral parts really sound good, it's worth trying it.

Musica e WCCF secondo movimento

Composed by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, Junpei Mishima

Arranged by Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, Junpei Mishima, Chihiro Aoki, Jonne Valtonen

Performed by FILMharmonic Orchestra Prague, FILMharmonic Choir Prague, Takenobu Mitsuyoshi, Mitsuharu Fukuyama, Keitaro Hanada, Chihiro Aoki, Takahiro Kai

I was just about to comment on this!

Qqqqqqwe: You really have to stop sneaking in these magnificent gems in unassuming posts that say "You might like this..." -- I almost missed this the first time! ;)

What a disc. Pity that there are so many fragmentary tracks; I suppose a sports game doesn't lend itself too well to wall-to-wall scoring... But to be honest, it's beyond a miracle that music like this should find its way into such a game. Am I the only person stunned hearing a rousing, fully orchestral and choral tone poem showing up in World Club Champion Football?

The medley is absolutely magnificent.

Thank you! :)

Jonne Valtonen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonne_Valtonen), the guy who arranged Symphonic Shades - Hlsbeck in Concert (posted earlier as well), arranged some of the tracks, the most orchestral ones I bet.

Thank GOD for orchestral music, lol.
Just wrote a 2000 word essay and theirs nothing quite as soothing as a grand symphony in my headphones at 1 am :)

Ive been compiling a sort of orchestral "Funpilation" if you will past couple of days. thought it might be interesting to gather upbeat/happy tracks and see what we get ^_-

Hi guys,
I've been thinking about this for a few months now - you may've noticed that I'm not quite as present as I used to me. I've been having a musical crisis. Unfortunately, this kind of music just isn't doing it for me any more. I heard Zimmer's POTC on the radio yesterday and it really got me pumping! I think I sorely misjudging the man - I used to think that Ben Hur was epic and that Goldsmith was the king, but well, there's no contest really, is there. Hans Zimmer is a great composer and MV/RC are creating such wonderful music; they've taken an old fashioned artform (the orchesrta) and bought it BANG up to date with contemporary sounds! And forget Goldsmith's synthesizer experimentation... RC is way superior. A symphony orchestra is just boring. It's all been done before. Why do people cling on to something over a hundred years old, anyway? Move with the times!
So, it's been a lot of fun ladies and gentlemen - but I'm moving over to the trailer music thread with my old friend thomasdaly.
Peace and good will to you all :)

Hey Danny you finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Alleluia.
Once you start to like Zimmer you'll never come back. ;)

And another great news today.

Star Wars? Who wants that? It's John Williams doing his silly "Look at me, I can write music in a fifty-year-old idiom!" thing; so anachronistic and utterly inappropriate for movies about the future; pity he had to do all six films. Ramin Dwajadi and Gustavo Santaolalla should've scored the prequels.

And, GOD I am sick of Rick Astley. ;)

Well the easiest way to do flac is to extract to WAV with EAC and then download FLAC frontend and have it compress to FLAC. I usually set it to level 6 compression because it is fairly in the middle. I am sure there are other programs that work as well but thats how I tend to do it.

I was just listening to this score yesterday and i realized that I never posted it in this thread.
Randy Edelman - The Mummy Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=J5WM9QEO

This is one of my favorite soundtracks of last year and fantastic all the way through. I love how the score has multiple themes that it weaves throughout in various styles. It has lots of massive epic themes, plenty of woodwinds, and a bit of asian style strings. If you guys want, I have the cd and can rip FLAC and post it.

Funny story about this score. The producers weren't so satisfied with Edelman's score, especially with some action cues (Edelman isn't really good at that), so they asked Debney to re-write some parts of it. He then had to re-score about 30 minutes of it, at the very last moment. The result is quite impressive given the very short amount of time he had (he's a very skilled pro), even though he clearly did a bit of his Lair-thing: plagiarism. But in fact some people consider the replacement score as better than the original one.

Here's Debney's one (Thanks to Digitalstrike):

MUMMY-TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR (ADDITIONAL PROMO SCORE)-JOHN DEBNEY

http://forums.ffshrine.org/showpost.php?p=1199823&postcount=6766

Now I personally enjoy both versions, but I regret Edelman's use of a bad quality sampler in addition to the London Symphony Orchestra (one of the dumbest things a movie composer can do, unless it's just a terrible lack of taste!). Also, it's IMO the weakest score of the series: you have to remember that Edelman came after giants like Goldsmith, Silvestri and even Debney (who scored the very nice "The Scorpion King"). Anyway there are some very good parts in it, especially the presence of good themes, wich is much appreciated.

Thanks for posting!

Sirusjr

Yeah I can't get into Debney's promo version at all. Further, I prefer edelman's score to goldsmith's, debney's and Silvestri's.

That said, I reiterate the fact that I enjoy this score and I thank you again for posting it here, where it undoubtedly belongs. :)

Oh no problem. My ex gf can't stand Mummy 3 ost compared to the first two because she is such a big fan of them and the style. I welcome your differing opinion. Back to the spirits (1976 - 1979)

Based in several polls by the specialized web bsospirit:

http://www.bsospirit.com/backspiritawards.php
http://www.bsospirit.com/goldspirits/goldawards.php

I have made a compilation of 17cds (almost 22 hours) with the considered best themes from 1976 to 2006. The election of all these themes is based in the opinion of the fans in Spain, so they are not my personal choices and of course there will be famous themes that you (and me) like and they are not included.

These cds should be very interesting to know how the music for films has evolved, how at the 70s and 80s Goldsmith or Williams predominate, the bright apparition of Horner or Elfman during the eighties or the important change in soundtrack world due to that Zimmer and MVs composers. The fall of Horner during the 00s, etc,etc...

Today I am going to upload the best themes from 1976 to 1979:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=23IOGFSJ

Guys, I'm a bit busy lately, so sorry if I'm less present these days. I'll check your all posts very soon, and I'll post the classical instruments albums as requested.

Hope you're doing well, and see you soon! :)
No problem. I am VERY busy now with studying for finals coming up in 2 weeks for law school. I find that taking a break to post on the forums keeps me sane though so I try to keep posting.

Law school wow!
Yeah I know the feeling. I for one quite like the micro-community of this thread.

Billie: Thanks ^^; it was really just a semi-random drawing. I actually drew it much bigger and decided to crop down to that portion for the album art.
[here's the original]

Oh and I think someone else should do a "Mostly-Fun Compilation" :)
would be fun I think

that is awesome
thanks alot

also does anyone know all the original songs yoko kanno got her inspiration from

such as Sousei no Aquarion Original Soundtrack - Aquarius

Black Escaflowne - Escaflowne The Movie (US)

DANCE OF CURSE - OVER THE SKY

Dance of Curse II - Escaflowne The Movie (US)

thanks a lot, i know i heard the original of each one of these somewhere, but i don't know the names

As hard as it is to believe, it just sounds like you've heard them before. There are really no sources for these pieces other than segments of classical works that share a passing resemblance (Prokofiev's Scythian Suite and Alexander Nevsky in Black Escaflowne, for example.) Like most of Kanno's orchestral works they are cleverly written in the neo-romantic Russian style, similar to James Horner.

Here's my latest orchestral treat:

For the lucky ones who enjoyed the glorious period of the SNES debut, there was one game which attracted a lot of attention: ACTRAISER. Splendid graphics, rich gameplay were among its qualities, but one truly astonishing aspect was the music. I don't know how YUZO KOSHIRO did this, but the virtuosity and beauty of the music he composed were unbelievable at this time, especially for a VG (Those who listened for the first time to the End Credits part 2 after having beaten the last boss know what I'm talking about...). Given the exceptional nature of this OST, some people decided to produce a fully orchestral arrangement of it. The already very talented KAORU WADA (Inuyasha, Lodoss, Silent mobius, ...) was hired to do it. His version is excellent, very close to the original compositions, except for the track "FILMOA" which is given a much more orchestral approach. Overall, this album is a true jewel every orchestral enthusiast should have.

Note: The usual downloadable version of this album is a low quality 160k one, but my version is a very rare HQ VBR one I downloaded long ago from Gamemp3s. The sound quality is excellent, so enjoy!

Actraiser was composed by Yuzo Koshiro, a man with many fans, and whom is also known for his compositions of the early Ys games, and Sorcerian. As par for him, Koshiro's work on the Actraiser soundtrack is quite good. For coming as early into the SNES's life as it did, the music did a lot with the system's sound hardware. Many of the compositions were already of an orchestral nature, so the transference to a live symphonic performance went quite well.

Actraiser Symphonic Suite is a beautiful album; it has energy, beauty, power, and most of all, emotion. The only thing it lacks is length. Sadly, we are only given about thirty minutes of these heavenly sounds. But, I would imagine that thirty minutes of heaven is still better than sixty minutes of anything else.

The music on this CD is well composed, performed, and arranged. I can think of little more to say about it other than that it would behoove any lover of game music to buy it. This is one of those albums that you can play for those buddies who think that game music is unsophisticated and childish. Once they pick their jaws up off the floor, your non-gaming friends will probably agree that the music is of high quality.

And like many things of beauty, Actraiser Symphonic Suite is not easy to find. Moreover, if it is found it will often set the buyer back a rather larger sum of money. If you happen to find it, and can spare the change, I would highly recommend the purchase.

Billie: What?! You have this rare score? Thank you for the track, very epic and noble, and the orchestra seems bigger than the ones Wada usually uses. I'm a big fan of Kaoru Wada (he's the one who arranged the Symphonic Actraiser I recently posted). I haven't posted much lately, so here is something new.
This a Star Trek Compilation made not only for the more impatient to keep entertained until the soundtrack for the new movie get released, but also for the ones that never heard this music before.
It's not a typical compilation, because i avoid to include most of main themes and in the chronological dates the films were made, like an usual compilation does.
I also included a track from a scene of the original Star Trek series (Track 6), which was parodied by Jim Carrey on the movie Cable Guy.
Look here for the original scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyhhFzE5O5U) and the Cable Guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O23EzxT-Ug) scene.
Enjoy.

2. Main Title from Star Trek: The Motion Picture by Jerry Goldsmith
3. Stealing The Enterprise from Star Trek III: The Search For Spock by James Horner
4. My Right Arm from Star Trek: Nemesis by Jerry Goldsmith
5. Hospital Chase from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home by Leonard Rosenman

7. Red Alert from Star Trek: First Contact by Jerry Goldsmith
8. The Nexus/A Christmas Hug from Star Trek: Generations by Dennis McCarthy

10. A Busy Man from Star Trek V: The Final Frontier by Jerry Goldsmith

Star Trek - Music Compilation

Thank you, Sanico. Clever choice of tracks. There's one track I didn't know: "The Ritual/Ancient Battle/2nd Kroykah", a good old fashioned Star Trek music piece. I suppose it's a classic for hardcore trekkies :p.

That scene is hilarious, and the Carrey one isn't bad either... :p

I personally prefer the Horner scores among ST OST. Horner's ST2 was his first major assignment, he put a lot of enthusiasm and energy in it, and he really managed to compose a great, brilliant score, one of the highlights of his career.

Thanks for the Star Trek compilation.

Between all the great works for these series of movies my favorite is the one by Jerry Goldsmith for the first film. Horner's were the first soundtracks that I heard and they like me a lot, great stuff, however I enjoy more the listening of Eidelman's work. The theme by Rosenman is marvelous however the full score is too eighty for me. Those themes from The Final Frontier by Goldsmith are exceptional too. Finally, and it is only my opinion, the best theme of all movies is The Enterprise by Goldsmith. One of the best ever.

As requested - copied from Film Score/VGM Hunt thread.

This is the only release of Burgon's Narnia music to my knowledge. It's a suite of highlights from the scores to The Lion, The Wich and the Wardrobe, Voyage of the Dawn Treader and The Silver Chair. It also inludes selections from several other of his TV works, including the delicious variations that form his contribution to 1981's Brideshead Revisited!

320kbps / 131 MB / 24 tracks / 58:38 mins
http://rapidshare.com/files/219157509/The_Television_Music_of_Geoffrey_Burgon.rar.html

The Chronicles of Narnia
1. Aslan's Theme
2. The Great Battle
3. Mr. Tumnus' Tune
4. The Storm at Sea
5. Aslan Sacrificed
6. The Journey to Harfang
7. Farewell to Narnia
Testament of Youth
8. Testament of Youth
9. Intimations of War
10. Elegy
11. Finale
Bleak House
12. Bleak House
13. The Streets of London
14. Dedlock vs. Boythorn
15. Lady Dedlock's Quest
16. Finale
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
17. Opening Music
18. Nunc Dimittis (Closing Music)
Brideshead Revisited
19. Brideshead Revisited
20. Meeting Julia
21. Julia's Theme
22. The Hunt
23. Fading Light
24. Farewell to Brideshead

Like Brideshead, Narnia is very Neoclassical in feeling, performed with a reletively small ensemble - it couldn't be further from the generically padded 'blockbuster' sound of Gregson-Williams. 'Aslan Sacrificed' quotes some progressions from the Crucifixus of Bach's B Minor Mass (appropriate to the obvious Christian allegory), interweaving it with the main theme. Also Schubert briefly rears his head during 'The Storm at Sea'. The last two tracks from The Silver Chair are beautiful, very reserved and stately.

Here's a suite I put together of Joe Hisaishi's score to the 1927 silent film The General. I can't implore you enough to watch the film and experience the amazing skill of Hisaishi in creating an accompaniment that is fully worthy of the genius of Buster Keaton! The music moves propulsively with the titular steam engine and hits all the visual cues, but there's still warmth and pathos aplenty (with a particularly delicate love theme). The main theme, heard at the opening strikes me as a really effective translation of Keaton's stone-faced deadpan.

IIINTERESTING! I have this movie on VHS with only piano music to accompany it. I am very interested to hear what Joe Hisaishi wrote for the film. I was totally unaware that he had done music for this! *downloading asap!*

Thinking of Carl Davis....What I would also love to find...both the movie on DVD and the music, is the score he did for The Thief of Baghdad based on Rimsky Korsakov's Sheherazade I have the movie taped on VHS from when the showed it on PBS in the 80's....would KILL for that on DVD...seriously ..... :P!!

A clip of the movie with Carl Davis's arranged score can be seen here...its absolutely beautiful. Sheherazade is one of my favorite pieces of classical music and it works fabulously with this movie

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback!

I've only found one track from Davis's Thief of Bagdad on a compilation. I believe that the current dvd editions use different (and inferior) synth efforts too.
http://rapidshare.com/files/220488948/Thief_of_Bagdad.mp3

Also here's a piece from Broken Blossoms(1919). Basically Davis adapted and fleshed out the original score by Louis F. Gottschalk. I think this melody is just beautiful! You'll need to whack up the volume for both these tracks as they're recorded at fairly low levels.

If anyone likes I can also post my copy of Sheherazade.

I like Shadow of Colossus OST too. x.x

Very nice! Many unknown tracks in this one.

I totally enjoy this Galaxy Fraulein Yuna piece, a good old eighties anime piece, cheesy but so much fun! I'm curious about those MAPS tracks, they're really good, but where do they come from, there's no info in the tags. No need to comment the Motoi Sakuraba pieces, I'm a big fan, so you can guess my opinion. I also posted the Headhunter OST some time ago, these tracks are just awesome IMO, modern game music at its best. OZ: Magnificent Battle: great boss battle piece, very upbeat.

Do you have the 3 Lodoss war TV osts in 320k? I found them as a torrent long ago. I point out that they're different from the 3 OVA scores (not by Wada and less good IMO).

I can dig Inuyasha and post it here, but Strange Dawn is extremely rare, I luckily found it long ago, but at this time I had the habit to delete the tracks I found uninteresting in anime OSts, so I only have 80% of the score, but in fact it's only the best parts: themes, orchestral stuff,... I only removed the ambient / electronic / solo instrument tracks. If someone is interested in Strange Dawn despite this, I can post it. I insist on the fact that it's a very beautiful score with a magnificient main theme.

This is not the OST of Inuyasha, it's a tribute album made by some great anime composers, including Wada. They only arranged some of the themes of the anime. But it's a great album, I recommend it a lot.

There are 3 osts of Inuyasha in total, plus 3 or 4 movie osts. They contain an incredible number of superb themes and battle pieces. I'll try to post them here, maybe they're already posted somewhere in the board.

It's such a shame that James Hannigan's Freelancer OST is only partly orchestrated, since those parts are pure awesomeness!

Here's an example, my favourite track:

Amazing! I have the commercial soundtrack release for Pinocchio and the score is in mono on that! The composer is Leigh Harline. He also contributed to some of the songs in Snow White and worked on several of the early Silly Symphony shorts.

As the documentary on the dvd/blu quite rightly points out, this is among the first 'mainstream' movies to have a totally through-composed score!

Great news, everybody! One of the scores I uploaded long ago in this board: Warriors of Virtue by Don Davis, has been reuploaded in lossless. I insist on the fact that it's an incredible symphonic score, some even considering it superior to Davis' Matrix scores, although less personal. Grab it as you can, you won't regret it!

Warriors of Virtue Expanded soundtrack by Don Davis

Thread 64826

Original Review From MMUK:

Isn't it ironic how the most unlikely films end up having fantastic scores? Don Davis, one of Hollywood's foremost orchestrators (who has worked extensively with James Horner on scores such as Casper, Legends of the Fall, The Pagemaster, Ransom and Titanic) has created an incredible musical tour-de-force for Warriors of Virtue, a kiddie action fantasy movie which was a bizarre cross of The Neverending Story and Tank Girl, and featured a young boy teaming up with some mutant kangaroo warriors to take on an evil wizard in a far off world. Despite the derivative nature of the film, Davis approached his task with the utmost seriousness and has crafted a piece of music which is, by turns, action-packed, beautiful and emotional, and is always entertaining. Davis' long term collaboration with James Horner really shines through in his music: the score is very reminiscent of some of Horner's more lavish and beautiful efforts and, if one were to describe it in such terms, you could say it was almost a kind of Krull meets Legends of the Fall meets Willow. After an admittedly shaky start, the album bursts into life during track 4, 'The Vortex and the Dare', and after that Davis and the Denver Symphony Orchestra simply never let up, delivering knockout cue after knockout cue after knockout cue. The highlights of Warriors of Virtue are far too numerous to mention without sounding repetitious and running out of superlatives, but the best of an extremely good bunch are 'The Lifespring Rhapsody', 'Forces of Nature', 'The Theme of Tao', which completely blew me away with its powerful rendition of the heroic main theme, 'The Mudlap Trap', which is a slightly more humourous piece, 'Planet of the Roo Warriors', which simply overflows with wonderful passages, crescendos and themes, and the finale - 'Ryan's Strength' - which is much more tender and emotional, with a beautifully performed piano solo taking centre stage. One thing I ought to mention is the fact that Don Davis seems to have a really peculiar sense of humour when it comes to naming cues: the titles from his lesbian noir-thriller Bound were so sexually suggestive as to be almost obscene, while here he takes the mickey out of some of the most famous music themes in Hollywood with names like 'Chained Melody', 'Encounter of the Roo Kind' and the groan-inducing 'Komodo Dragontrot'. I must also say hats off to Prometheus Records, the Belgian soundtrack label, and its producer Luc van de Ven for allowing the lucky few film music fans who manage to get hold of this under-rated and undiscovered gem of a score to enjoy such a wonderful, wonderful album.

I'd like to point out that one of the most impressive orchestral movie scores I've heard: Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within by Elliot Goldenthal, has been posted in a Complete version (Bootleg). The quality is pretty correct, as it's 256k. Highly recommended!

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - Complete Score

Music by Elliot Goldenthal

http://www.khimaira-magazine.com/image.a4d?file=khimaira_web%2Fbibliotheque%2Fmusiq ue%2FfinalfantasyKH.jpg

From Tracksounds - read the full review (http://www.tracksounds.com/reviews/finalfantasy.htm)

Blending his dissonant style performed by a massive orchestra and choir, with an equally powerful but contrasting love theme, Goldenthal churns out an absolutely golden score. From the first mystical moments of Goldenthal's music, the listener is taken on a vigorous and breath-taking ride. Despite the clear differences in musical style, perhaps not since John Williams' score for the original Star Wars film has a sci/fi-fantasy-score come forth with such fortitude and character. Unfortunately, within the film, Goldenthal's score plays second fiddle to all the visual delights on screen. Compared with the effectiveness and force of the music on the soundtrack, it is downplayed within the film itself. While it is unlikely this score will leave a similar, indelible mark on film music or on audiences as Star Wars did, Goldenthal's score is still worthy of the highest accolades.

Final Fantasy contains an all-too-rare-amount of ominous and wondrous music such as the opening track, The Spirit Within (1), Toccata and Dreamscapes (7) or Winged Serpent (13). The feel is expansive and majestic as Goldenthal infuses cavernous brass with haunting choruses and strings that range from alluring to terrifying. Also incorporated into some of the more intense sequences are strong percussions- sometimes in a very militaristic manner and at other times making a slight nod to Jerry Goldsmith. For Final Fantasy, Elliot Goldenthal's action music is never stale, seldom becomes forgettable, background music, and is a potent force in and of itself.

Strangely enough, right before I posted this on a whim in the lossless movie soundtracks thread, Arthierr just referenced this fantastic score by James Horner. I will update this post with the complete score as well later but for now the lossless score album!

arthierr
04-15-2009, 01:27 AM
I'll be clear, I'm a HUGE Horner fan, despite the many criticisms made against him, which are sometimes true, and sometimes VERY arguable, if not totally unfounded and only motivated by an hatred from unknown origins.

The way the guy composes, his virtuosity, his sense of emotional expression in music, his talent for writing long and very complex cues functioning like mini-symphonies (or tone poems), his innovations in the field of orchestration, etc. make him one my favorite composers in any music style. Despite, again, his various flaws.

Now about this score, great idea to post it. Thank you for this. LOF has been sold a lot, and has many haters and many lovers (guess in what category I am). It's indeed a fantastic romantic score, one of the best he composed in the 90's.

I'll have more elements about it tomorrow...

You should check some of them out! The Black Swan is a fun, if camp, early technicolor swashbuckler (score-wise, let's face it Alfred Newman could do no wrong). The Fountainhead ought to appeal to all those out there that believe in the importance of great Art (above commerce). And Orphee, a French twist on the legend of Orpheus is almost surrealist, about confronting death and and relinquishing earthly love(s).

Another great collection -especially for those like me with a sweet tooth! 'Eternal Love' from The Thief of Badad (1940) is one of the most beautiful themes in the history of cinema, expressing longing and ectasy with a symphonic richness that only Bernard Herrmann would later match in the transformation scene from Vertigo. The Vaughan Williams and Roy Webb are also interesting inclusions - quite rarely heard. I wonder if there will be another 40s set with Alfred Newman's The Song of Bernadette? Although it is an expanded idea of 'love' (religious/spiritual fervour) I think it would be very appropriate.

Wonderful post, Garcia. No one has posted music from this era before, so this is an original and very welcome contribution to this thread, as there are so many orchestral treasures there.

About LEGENDS OF THE FALL, here's a review about it. It's written by Jonathan Broxton, the owner of Movie Music UK. I'm a big reader of MMUK, some reviews are really good, but others (not written by JB) sometimes focus too much on the movies instead of talking about their music.

Anyway, this particular review is special because Broxton speaks from his heart more than in others. He describes his sheer admiration for this score which really brought him into movie music. His review is interesting, although less technical than his latest ones. His analysis of themes is notably quite accurate, IMO. Recommended read.

Legend by Goldsmith is great !!! Legend by Tangerine Dream is not bad.

That version of Legend uploaded by Sirusjr was exclusively composed by Jerry Goldsmith (alone). It is a long story that is sure you know. Goldsmith wrote the soundtrack but the producers used it only for Europe.

Then Tangerine Dream band composed a entire movie score for US theaters in order to attract more teenagers.

Luckily, Goldsmith and Tangerine Dream never collaborated in this movie.

Best.

Greetings! Long time lurker first time poster. I also come with my first offering. My own little fan compilation of Disney straight to DVD scores by Joel McNeely. A master whom appears to remain below the radar for some reason.

Most of his Disney scores are very short. I took the best of the lot and put them together into a playlist that will fit onto a single CD.

The obvious omission in my playlist would be Joel's marvelous score for Return To Neverland. That one soundtrack stands fine on its own.

Please note tracks were obtained from different sources and the bit rate varies.

In closing I would just like to say, I strongly believe in purchasing what ever I can through commercial outlets, and do so on a regular basis as I find new gems online. Thanks for sharing all your gems!

I hope some of you will enjoy this selection:

02 The Journey Begins-Mulan 2
03 In Love And In Trouble-Mulan 2

Borf, thank you for this wonderful set. I'm really enjoying it! Mulan2 has a great cutesy main theme and the action material is strong (if not as utterly inspired as the Goldsmith original). The Heffalump score is very charming and delicate too. The recent Pinocchio post made me think of putting together a animation/action compilation and this has me even more in the mood.

And thanks Sanico for the Bond tracks! Diamonds Are Forever is actually a fav Bond score of mine, even though the film is dire ;)

Edit: the password for the McNeely is actually 'jmdizny'.

Lens, glad you like the selection and thanks for letting me know the error with the password I originally posted. (now corrected)

I to was surprised by the The Heffalump score. Themes are well thought out and the action music pretty exciting considering the age group the product is geared towards.

I Look forward to your compilation. I plan to do a Joel McNeely "family films" compilation and a "Action Adventure" compilation by the same composer in the future.

Greetings. I've been looking this thread and, oh boy! It surely is perfect. You people do a great work here.

I've humbly come to ask if someone could find/upload the rare soundtrack album of a film named "Red Corner", starring Richard Gere. The movie has some very beautiful instrumental music composed by Thomas Newman that, as I suppose, falls in the orchestral genre (if I may use that classification).

In the Amazon website, there's a player that allows you to hear some samples of the tracks. If you gentlemen could take a look, I'm certain that you will appreciate it. Here's the URL: http://www.amazon.com/Red-Corner-Original-Picture-Soundtrack/dp/B000005ON1

So, if in any case you people do obtain the score, I'll be very grateful. Sorry for my mediocre english and perhaps invasive tone, and thanks in advance for the attention.

Thanks for posting!

Sanico: So it was James Bond!

In fact, except for David Arnold's bond score, I mostly have heard JB scores only in the movies, not as external scores. So this selection sure is great for knowing better the pre-Arnold era. I believe the weakest Bond song/theme I've heard is probably Serra's one (the guy is really cool at a personal level, but his music isn't my thing). I remember James Horner said the worst score he's listened to was Goldeneye! On the other hand, I'm a big fan of Arnold's scores, he really renewed the franchise, with his powerful, modern style. But a great part of the incredible quality of his music is due to Nick Dodd, his ultra-skilled orchestrator and conductor (and I DO mean ultra-skilled...).

Thank you!

Borf : Well, for a first post it's a pretty good start. Thanks a lot for this original compilation full of rare music. We already talked about Mcneelly in this thread when Garcia posted a superb album of suites from his scores, so I won't do the same comments again, but indeed he's a very talented composer (he just should be more PERSONAL, he copies way too much his peers and masters).

Of course don't hesitate to post more music if you want to share something with us you judge really interesting.

Sad/slow music? Not really my cup opf tea, but now this thread is for any kind of orchestral music - not only action//upbeat - it's a nice addition anyway, there are certainly some people here who like this kind of music.

Budarc: thank you for this compilation. This is very good music, you've chosen quite some classics of Adventure/Epic movies. Although I generally look for "rarer" music, obscure and lesser known orchestral pieces, your post nonetheless has a great musical value. The custom covers are really nice too!

I posted some time ago Ogre -Grand Repeat- (Thread 64317), a very nice arrangement of the music from the OGRE series, by Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata. For people who liked it (but also for other people) there's one album absolutely to be heard: Romeo x Juliet by Hitoshi Sakimoto. The style is similar, but the orchestra is much bigger, and Sakimoto had a lot more experience when he composed it, so his writing is even more skilled, and the orchestrations are quite sumptuous. This album is a true masterpiece to me, among what comes best from Japan's orchestral music. Be sure to check this one out if you haven't already.

Review by zzeroparticle

Ever since I have listened to the soundtracks to Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story, Hitoshi Sakimoto has become one of my favorite composers. So when I found out that his initial foray into the world of anime soundtracks would be in composing the music to Romeo x Juliet, I was excited in seeing what would become of it. After listening through the soundtrack, I was very impressed by the results.

One of Sakimoto’s biggest strengths is being able to capture the mood and essence of the world in which Romeo x Juliet takes place. The soundtrack starts out with “Tragedy in the House of Capulet,” a piece that’s fittingly heavy and somber as it lays about the overarching plot for the anime series and captures the fall of the House of Capulet perfectly in the anime’s opening scenes. This is quickly followed by a rearrangement of “You Raise Me Up,” performed by Lena Park who sings it beautifully.

Tracks 3 to 8 evoke the many different faces of Neo Verona. Starting with “Red Storm” through the eponymous “Neo Verona,” Sakimoto illustrates a picture of the vibrant, ever-changing city. In “Neo Verona,” you can practically hear the footsteps of the common folks as they move about their business. The four tracks that follow “Neo Verona” reveal a much softer side of the citizenry’s life through its slower, calmer melodies that are contemplative and excellently done.

Moving on, we head towards some of the darker tracks which are generally more discordant and full of tension. These pieces are generally played in scenes in which the unscrupulous Duke Montague is prominent. The melodies during these scenes are pretty heavy-handed and ominous. While the listener can definitely pick out moments in which there’s a ray of hope, most of these tracks are give off an aura of despair and oppression which suit Duke Montague’s character perfectly.

The next set of pieces are all scattered in the themes and scenes that they’re trying to evoke. “Promise” delivers a calmer, romantic vibe while “Recovery” is much more fast-paced as it brings forth the image of a combat scene with its urgent, militaristic tempo generated by the percussion. Towards the end, as the plot events begin to wrap up, you have quite a few victory-styled tracks that arise such as “Flight,” which sounds like a victory fanfare as the characters make their triumphant exit, and “The World in Which You are,” which is calm and denotes the arrival at a resolution through a reprise of the themes that you have heard in some of the earlier tracks.

Amidst the glorious fanfares that can be found towards the end of the soundtrack, Eri Kawai also gets a vocal track in “Prayer.” Although she does display a good amount of vocal talent as usual, the song just is not compelling compared to the rest of the tracks.

Finally, the soundtrack ends with the ending songs “Cyclone” and “Goodbye, Yesterday.” The former is a rock piece that’s out of place. The rhythm is just too fast and frenetic and the vocalist’s execution isn’t very appealing which together, makes it nearly impossible to see how this piece even belongs. “Goodbye, Yesterday” is a more mellow song sung by Mizrock that doesn’t raise itself above standard J-pop. While the song itself isn’t bad, it’s not very noticeable either, and in an album with such fabulous orchestration, is completely forgettable.

The Romeo x Juliet Original Soundtrack demonstrates how seamless Sakimoto’s transition was from writing video game soundtracks to anime soundtracks. Sakimoto succeeds in handling the mood and atmosphere of the anime series as well as making the music match what is taking place on screen through its memorable melodies. Although Eri Kawai’s performance on “Prayer” and the two songs during which the credits roll leave much to be desired, this soundtrack is solid all around, making it a must-have for those who enjoy an album packed to the brim with breathtakingly epic, sweeping, orchestral works.

ORCHESTRAL GAME CONCERT

Performer: Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra

MP3 LAME VBR HQ

http://www.filestube.com/search.html?q=orchestral+game+concert&select=rar

From Soundtrack Central:

This is not a game soundtrack album, but rather a live recording of a concert in Japan. And what a concert it is, this totally terrific Game Music Concert! It's packed with sixteen tracks from ten different games released here in America, all performed by symphony orchestra! It's so impressive to hear synthy game scores of the mid-80s and 90s all beautifully orchestrated like this. If you don't think game music can sound good, listen to this CD! What more can I say about it? A whole lot actually!

How about mentioning the tracks that surprised me... One such track is an orchestrated melody of Super Mario Brothers. Now an idea like that sounds ludicrous like a pizza with broccoli on it (no offense to anyone who eats that kind of pizza), but I was impressed and amazed! The whimsy and joy are still there, along with the recognizable tunes such as the "Mario Theme", "Underwater Theme" and "Dungeon" (Dum-de-dum-de-dum-dum! Remember that melody?).

Another cool track is Super Mario World. I could not possibly imagine such a whimsical, lighthearted (if somewhat annoying) musical romp being performed by an orchestra, so I was really surprised and impressed with this one. It's been jazzed up a bit, while remaining faithful to the original composition. It even has a very cool ending.

Following that track is one the album's better treats, two absolutely stunning orchestrated tracks from "The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past". Track 7 is the music from Hyrule Castle, which has been slowed down a little in tempo but is still exciting enough, and it stays faithful to its original melody. The same thing is true for the following track, the ever-popular Zelda Overworld theme. With a key transposition and a few extra additions (a few bridges and a few rearranged passages), this track is the *only* way for Zelda fans to hear the Overworld theme performed by an orchestra.

But wait, I've saved the best for last! Many Final Fantasy fans would just be dying to hear more Final Fantasy orchestrated music after the excellent Symphonic Suite Final Fantasy, and this concert more than grants their wish. There are three tracks from Final Fantasy IV, the aggressive march of the Red Wings (which occasionally sounds like the Death Star motive from Star Wars), the beautiful love theme, and the epic ending (trimmed down a little from its 11:36 minute running time to 7:16, with the theme of Final Fantasy arrangement taken directly from the Symphonic Suite album). Credit should go to maestro Katsuhisa Hattori, best known for his work on Symphonic Suite, for creating such terrific arrangements of these classic tunes.

The rest of the songs are on the same level, and happen to be from games that were released in both Japan and America, such as Dragon Quest III and IV, Populous, Romance Of The Three Kingdoms, and Wizardry (even though I haven't had a chance to play those games I just mentioned).

The performance by the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra is completely flawless, and the recording quality, while perhaps not as clear as one would like, is still quite good. This concert spawned four sequels, each of which are on the same level as this one. As one can guess, Game Music Concert is more than a must-own to anyone's collection, it is truly a masterpiece.

Thought I would post my first 'Action Pack' to honour the roots of this wonderful thread!

http://rapidshare.com/files/224063057/Action_Pack.rar

1. Jerry Goldsmith: Bad Girls (1994) - Suite
(The Hanging / Ambush / My Land)
To kick off I decided to put together three of my favourite tracks from this underrated Goldsmith gem. 'The Hanging' is one of the most exciting cues Jerry ever penned - and that's saying a lot! We begin with motorically thrusting strings playing one of Jerry's trademark jaunty rhythms (how he manages to deploy such shifting and irregular time signatures so effortlessly AND still make it sound so catchy always amazes me). The flexible main theme comes into view next and continues to be developed from its robust, heroic form to a soothing oboe variant over guitar. After this there is some tremendously poised action writing, the orchestration very transparent and expressive; it seems as if the texture is pulled taught, with strings straining over an ostinato, until released in a downward rush (2:39) back to the resplendent main theme.
An odd 'tapping' synth+percussion introduces the next cue with suspense, building up to an action set piece that involves rapid fugato (5:35). To finish, 'My Land' plays out with a very lush, pastoral take on the main theme.
2. Franz Waxman: Prince Valiant (1954) - Escape
Not the obvious choice from this score, but I really love how modern it sounds. Very suspenseful. You can definitely hear the influence Waxman had on later composers like Goldsmith and Wiliiams.
3. Elmer Bernstein: Heavy Metal (1981) - Bomber and the Green Ball
This is the album edit of two cues. It opens with a powerful tune for horns, and the whole piece showcases Bernstein's thick-set orchestration. I love the otherworldly, sci-fi chords that start at 2:20 - with warbling choir!
4. Akira Ifukube: Symphonic Fantasia No. 1 (1983)
This track is a lengthy concert arrangement by the composer himself of his famous music for the Godzilla series. The motif that signals Godzilla's appearance acts as an introduction, followed by the ominous tread of the title music for the first film (1954); then we have the title of King Kong Vs Godzilla, the love theme from Battle in Outer Space, the Varagon motif, the battle music from Ghidrah, and a final section where the marches from Battle in Outer Space and Destroy All Monsters are interwoven and brought to a sharp coda.
The best thing for me about Ifukube's orchestral style in these films is that it manages to be folky, militaristic and primitivistic at the same time.
5. Nino Rota: Orchestra Rehearsal (1978) - Galop
This was the last collaboration between Rota and Federico Fellini - and it's very high on my list of films to see (I love both these artists and the concept intrigues me). 'Galop' is a brief and bracing variation on the score's main tune.
"For a long time I had in mind to tell a story of an orchestra rehearsal, because whenever I attended one I always had these mixed feelings of emotion, disbelief, skepticism and joyful amazement. In other words, to witness how disorder, confusion, such diverse moods, indifference and the argumentative spirit of such disparate individuals can be merged into a single, harmonious yet abstract design as is music" - Federico Fellini
6. Georges Auric: Orphe (1950) - Looking for the Princess
A dashing, feather-light scherzo with very detailed writing for woodwind. Though it's quite delicate, it's also, unusually, in 15/8 time, making it very restless. Thought I'd throw it in as a different sort of 'action' cue.
7. Alex North: Viva Zapata! (1952) - Gathering of Forces
Slow-burning start to this one, but when that gorgeous, and quite vocal-sounding, hispanic cello theme slinks in it just keeps getting hotter and hotter! Alex North is another amazingly skilled composer. Can you imagine something so technically perfect yet personal coming out of any of today's keyboard, beats and samples crew?!
8. Jerome Moross: The Big Country (1958) - The Welcoming
Moross out Coplands Copland with this score. The amount of energy, warmth and exuberance in this piece makes it one of my favourite action tracks. Classic western too!
9. Jerry Goldsmith: The Blue Max (1966) - The Attack
Yes, another Goldsmith track - he is the king of action music after all ;) I was lucky enough to hear this piece performed in the Royal Albert Hall with the LSO conducted by Jerry. It was thrilling to see and hear the orchestra being put through such a workout. There's a touch of Shostakovich in this one - the demonic xylophone for instance. The passage beginning at about 2:10 is so intense it could almost be the development section of a symphony. Also I think you can tell the influence it had (amongst many other works) when it was used as a temp track on Star Wars.
10. Dmitri Shostakovich: Hamlet (1964) - Suite
(Introduction / Military Music / Scene of the Poisoning)
Speaking of Shosty, here's an abbreviated suite from a Russian screen adaptation of Hamlet. It's one of his more famous film scores, and rightly so. The abruptness and dissonance of the prelude makes the hair on the back your neck stand up. He seems to emphasis horror rather than tragedy. Muscular brass, scurrying and stuttering strings and interesting percussive effects dominate the final 'Scene of the Poisoning'.
11. John Williams: Superman IV (1987) - Nuclear Man Theme
What I enjoy so much about this theme is that it has an almost funky edge to it. I think this is almost bound to be partially attributable to Alexander Courage's arrangement and orchestration, as it's not a quality I normally associate with Willaims. Listen to the pulsing basses and little bits of synth fizz.
12. Bernard Herrmann: White Witch Doctor (1953) - Suite
(Prelude / Peticoat Dance / The Safari / Tarantula / The Lion / Nocturne/ Abduction of the Bakuba Boy/ The Skulls /Lonni Bound by Ropes / Departure)
This is taken from Charles Gerhardt's excellent recording of some of Herrmann's lesser heard music. Set in the Congo, this is effectively 'a tone poem of the jungle' as musicologist, and arranger of this suite, Christopher Palmer has noted. The Prelude is a chattering and whirling piece based around the African pentatonic scale. This material is played in another guise next on gently hypnotic marimbas(1:41) while piccolos twitter like birds in the canopy. The strange, almost groan-like sounds of 'The Tarantula'(4:00) are produced by the rare medieval instrument known as the serpent (Goldsmith uses this to great effect as well in Alien). The Nocturne that follows is one of those meltingly beautiful, harmonically rich themes that only Herrmann could write (if you listen carefully you might spot a prefiguring of part of the romantic music from North by Nothwest). After this the action picks up again with piano ostinatos and heavy timpani hits before a return to the main theme.

Hope you enjoy!! :)

EDIT: I listened to it all and it is simply MARVELOUS!! It is hard to pick a favorite but I think I'll have to say that the Akira Ifukube track is the one that interested me the most. Okay I m new here, But I followed this thread from the beginning to the end, Downloaded the tracks I could and stuff, but still I m more of a fast paced action person. I have been searching for adrenaline paced action tracks from games, movies, anime , And I have quite alot of them.

But What got me interested in orchestra was the game Ninja gaiden from the NES and even now I need action paced tracks for my Ninja gaiden 2 gameplays because of the custom music feature. So I m going to upload my best of the best action paced tracks , some of them I edited due to repitition, but please bare with me since I m a novice at this kind of thing, I just felt I should contribute....
Btw I like the thread, I was not able to get as much action tracks from this thread, only at the beginning but Oh well.
Some of the tracks I have are already on this thread, so I m adding my unique ones.

Great! I'm glad you liked it :)

I will certainly upload the Ifukube Orchestral Works cd I have. My only other experience of his music is from the films themselves sadly. There's another cd on the same label called 'Japanese Orchestral Favoutires' which I've been meaning to buy - it has another Ifukube piece and one by Wada too. As soon as I get my hands on it it put that on here for you too.

I'm quite stuck for time at the mo, but I might upload some more Herrmann soon as well.

Also, many thanks for Romeo x Juliet! It must be some of the most stunning and purposeful anime music I've heard.

Personal opinion: in fact VS is one of my least favorite Sakimoto scores. I find it much less melodic and listenable than his others. The only track I kept from it is the wonderful End Credits, a fantastic 8 minute long piece, performed I believe by a real orchestra. This piece is grandiose and very melodic, downright in Sakimoto's usual style.

NOT ANY TALES?!?

I'm a huge fan of Motoi Sakuraba, and I absolutely recommend you listen to his (numerous) Tales scores. But in fact there are so many I don't remember one to be tried in priority. The recent ones are usually better composed and orchestrated.

Edit: Vesperia has been composed by Sakimoto indeed, but the other Tales are usually made by Sakuraba.

Yes vesperia is fantastic! Each disc is a separate file anyway so grab the first disc and see what you think! Personally its my favorite Tales soundtrack. Everything I post there is my own rip which means I liked the music enough to import from Japan at 35 or 40$ a soundtrack (except for the FF vocal collections which are still fantastic and highly recommended)

EDIT: Arthierr I don't know that I would suggest ALL his tales scores. They can be quite repetitive and boring with the exception of Legendia (which is not Sakuraba) and Vesperia.

A fantastic vocal album collaboration with multiple Japanese game composers including Hibino, Iwadare, Ito, Hosoe, Hirota, Shimomura was just posted! It has a variety of styles from Jazz to orchestral all with fantastic vocalists as well!
Exerpt from Squareenixmusic Review
Message is easily my favorite original work of the year. It features a variety of styles, a ton of industry heavyweights, and some awesome vocalists. You'll find extremely bubbly synth pieces, some jazz, some ballads, some ethnic inspired pieces, and some dramatic pieces. While not all the vocalists are as strong as others, their voices fit in the context of the instrumentation used and some even surprised me! This is easily worth the purchase as each song is extremely enjoyable and it's something that's not done often. My only wish is that if there is another collaborative vocal album that Yasunori Mitsuda and some other industry titans, such as Nobuo Uematsu, are given a chance to work on it. It would have only made the album stronger in my opinion.

Hey, many great composers are in the list. Looks quite interesting. Right now going to sleep (1:30 a.m. here), but will check tomorrow.

Good night, mates. :)
