I don't think they have (sarcasm). I'm listening to this album and a lot of the songs are just slight variations of the first Gyakuten Saiban orchestral album. It's annoying how completely unoriginal the arrangements of the Gyakuten Sisters' Theme, Housuke Odoroki, Gyakuten Saiban 3 - End, and parts of the Gyakuten Saiban 1-3 Courtroom Suite themes are compared to the first orchestral album.

Why did they bother making this album? It's just more of the same. They could have done a rock version or something (I'd even settle for electronic). It's nice having another version of Godot's theme, but this album is unnecessary and redundant. If someone other than Noriyuki Iwadare had arranged this, it might have turned out differently.

Thanks for sharing it regardless, deft_oK.

The arrangements aren't the most exciting things I've ever heard, for sure, but this album *is* very welcome - and is unquestionably galaxies ahead of the previous "orchestral" album:

Half the tracks of the previous album were synthesized, or incorporated synthesized elements, presumably in an attempt to compensate for a very small orchestra. The orchestra itself was absolute rubbish, not to mention badly recorded in a poxy acoustic.

This CD, on the other hand was recorded in a concert hall, with a fine, full sized, world-class orchestra.

I know, it could've been better... I don't know how Iwadare makes his arragements sound so bloody flat - I guess he's just not a skilled orchestrator. But still, this is the best outing yet for Gyakuten Saiban music, and I'm enjoying it a great deal - much, much moreso than I did the first album.

Thanks for sharing. :)

I wouldn't really know about that, however I must ask whether you're talking about the Tokyo Game Show version or the Tanomi Board Version of the album; the former certainly does suck.

Regardless it's still too much of the same in terms of composition. It's like comparing the SNES version of the FF4 OST to the DS version; the DS has more power audio-wise, but they didn't improve upon the original; they just copied it (poorly).

But still, this is the best outing yet for Gyakuten Saiban music, and I'm enjoying it a great deal - much, much moreso than I did the first album.
We're from two different worlds, although we're more or less on the same page regarding Iwadare.

My experience is with "Gyakuten Meets Orchestra" - hopefully we're both talking about the same CD here... The cover has a blue haired female conductor whipping a terrified male triangle player.

This new CD seems a bit like, "Let's rerecord that old crappy album with a nice orchestra!" -- which is nice, very nice... But if you're going to the trouble of making a new album, a new recording... for God's sake, you could've done better than this. Definitely agree with that. That said, I'm still enjoying this disc - maybe because the dreadful performance of the first album grates on me so badly - but absolutely, it could be better.

As for the arrangements, well, as I say, I don't think they're very good at all! They have this odd feeling of disinterest - I got the same impression from most of the Orchestral Game Concert arrangements. Big orchestra, lots of money, great music... But somehow, a strange feeling of something missing.

It's a pity because obviously a big pot of cash has gone into making this recording. You'd think they would hire somebody who could make some interesting arrangements, not this textbook stuff. You only need to listen to the orchestral music of somebody like Yoko Kanno (a stinking thief, but let's not go there - I'm citing her only as an example of orchestration style) to know what a bloody big orchestra can sound like. Iwadare's arrangements are positively flaccid in comparison, despite having similar instrumentation, and size of forces at his disposal... Let's just say, if I was orchestrating this stuff, and they told me I was getting the Tokyo Philharmonic, for God's sake... I'd NOT be doing it like this!

You can tell the more I'm listening to this, the more I'm finding my initial praise to be increasingly undeserved... ;)

Hey! You know what? Despite of a quality of arrangement (but for me it isn't bad at all, really nice to be honest, my only problem is that snares are sometimes way too loud) I still love this album. Why? Because there is a lot of bloody great tunes!:) Melodies, melodies, melodies! Fantastic themes, so catchy. For me it is enough. And there is one strange thing in all those complains above - we can listen to a snes OSV's, midi's, and other synthetic sounds, but we complain about the real and big orchestra? Because orchestration isn't perfect? Don't get it. Great arranges, even if not flawless.

I thought the whole point in this album was that it was live? They didnt set out to record a new album that was virtually identical to their last, they had a live concert and decided to record it. It's unsurprising the orchestration isn't wildly different if it was billed as a live concert version of the album the people that went to it most likely own...

The DVD is due out in October, now THAT will be awesome.

Nobody says you're not entitled to enjoy this - I don't see anybody trying to silence your opinion.

With a NES, you get what you get. A synth is a synth. Nobody expects a NES to sound like the London Symphony Orchestra. People are complaining about these arrangements because they show musical incompetence - by not making anywhere near full use of the facilities in front of them.

Nobody is complaining because it's an orchestra. We're complaining because what the big orchestra has been given to play, makes them sound small and boring.

Isn't it surprising though that they went to the trouble of doing this concern - and didn't even hire a skilled arranger to make it sound decent when played by ninety people?

Mmh... Really a nice share. Strangely enough I prefer the former orchestra album. The present one has a few noticeable flaws (lack of "spirit" - mechanical performance, needs much more reverb, snares too much to the front...).

But it's a great album anyway. And Iwadare's naturally energetic and nervous style match very well to the context of this album (even if the conducting is too dull to let this really appear).

THX :-)
