His music is light, romantic, and tends to shy away from emotional edges.

Except in Les Dialogues des Carmelites... :'(

I'm sure most people have heard of the record label Naxos - even those folk who class themselves as anti-classical... but please indulge me a potted history nonetheless... Naxos was founded in 1987 with the intention of offering good performances on extremely cheap CDs. In their early years, they achieved the latter more often than the former, with a succession of recordings made in Czech, Polish, and Hungarian sweatshop conditions. Often, they were made with no-name conductors and soloists, by jobbing engineers in average recording venues. Of course, they're infinitely better today, but back at the beginning it was all about being as cheap as humanly possible.

Marco Polo was founded as a "sister" label for Naxos; they focused on recording minority interest specialties. Sales were expected to be low (and they were) but expenses were low and prices were high - so Marco Polo prospered. Long before Stromberg and Morgan were in the business, Marco Polo began recording obscure film music - and one of their first was a selection by French-Swiss composer Arthur Honegger. Following this experimental 1987 release, they followed by with three further volumes - a complete recording of Les Miserables in 1989, and two additional volumes of excerpts from Honegger's other scores in 1993.

Most of these CDs are pretty hard to come by these days. The 1989 Les Miserables was re-released on Naxos in 2004 (as often occurs with popular old Marco Polo albums) but the others have drifted into obscurity, long since deleted.

I fell instantly in love with the music, of course... but a word of warning about the recording quality is warranted.

All volumes are digital recordings, sure enough, but the low budget is very obvious - particularly in the first volume. Pristine it ain't. Dodgy edits abound. Get this one for the music, not for the sound quality - it's not by any means bad, but will probably offend people who are more interested in the production values and less interested in the quality of the music. Please bear in mind that Volume 1 is a recording made literally in Naxos' first six months of life and has a certain "seat of your pants" feeling about it. Putting aside the usual warnings of dragons herein, on with the show.

I am aware that Kobalski and others have posted some of these albums, possibly all, on the Shrine before (with Les Miserables and Crime et Chatiment only bumped today) - I can assure you that these are all my rips from my CDs; I have been preparing these posts for a number of weeks and by sheer coincidence, as I was finishing up writing these notes I saw Kobalski's threads and realised that I would be re-posting. No matter. All the greatest respect to him; it can't hurt to have another mirror for these splendid albums and they're so good I think it's justified to have more than one person singing their praises at a time!

Enjoy! :)

Regain is really good. That trumpet theme reminds me of Trevor Jones.

Also, Naxos is great for hearing rare stuff, even if the recordings are shoddy at best. For example, they finally released Tyberg's Symphony No. 2 in August after I listened to the Symphony No. 3 about a million times. No. 2 isn't as good, but it's the thought that counts. Man, that No. 3 is a masterpiece though.

Thanks for the Honegger, Tango. I have heard most of his orchestral and quartet works, and of course, one of his absolute best Jeanne d'Arc au bcher. I remember not liking Les Miserables too much, but maybe it was because i was really let down by the performance...

And Sirus, thanks for Davis' Aladdin. I actually was contemplating on buying it until I read a very negative review about it being a tediously long orchestral work with no inspiration. Davis is a great composer but just not very known to me outside his film and TV works...

I hate to end this comment on a negative note, but Pin to Kona is really a turd by Hirano's usual standard. It will go down with Hunter x Hunter as one of the victims of a severe lobotomization. :( Thanks a lot for posting, however.

Indeed - for some of the stuff they've put out (past and present) I'll take a shoddy recording with a big smile on my face because, let's face it, this stuff will never get recorded ever again by anybody...

Some of their earlier recordings are downright incompetent. There's a bit in the Honegger where somebody switches on a mike in the middle of the piece - at 1:01 in the first track from Mermoz - causing a big click and a sudden increase in volume. The mind boggles...

I think they've got a lot better recently, though - it's been a long time since I heard anything from them that was downright terrible.

Would you recommend the Tyberg then? I was thinking about getting them (both of them).

About Pin To Kona... Yeah... Lobotomy Hirano strikes again, although it's a drama score, so it's to be expected. You never, ever, EVER get anything particularly standout in a drama. There's a house style and you don't break it. This is obviously Hirano doing what he's told. It's amazing, though, just what he manages to get in - these scores, for me, are always about what IS there rather than what isn't. Like the main theme; paint by numbers Japanese drama theme - but how well he does it! All requirements satisfied - big, memorable tune, nice and bouncy, fun beat, electric guitars, etc... but we also get thirty seconds of orchestral fanfare beforehand... and we get a nice segue at 1:12 where the theme passes to strings - a bit of sax, some flute trills, brass comes back in, guitar soars, etc... It might not be grade A dissonant, symphonic, style-clash, superhuman orchestrator Hirano, but it's ALWAYS thoroughly professional and easy on the ear. There are some absolute standout cues ("Memories" and "Until Seeing Her Again" - the latter featuring Hosoda's piano) and some great moments elsewhere...

I think one needs to set one's expectations appropriately for TV drama scores. If you'd heard Hirano's other entry in this arena (2008's Shiori to Shimiko no Kaiki Jikenbo) you'd be a whole lot more forgiving with Pin To Kona! ;)

(It's basically a load of noisy pop, about three minutes ripping off Ouran (but with half as many players,) some electronica, a few nice cues, but zilch approaching memorable. 37 minutes of nothing, basically.

The Symphony No. 3 definitely for Mahler fans, but the Symphony No. 2 hasn't grown on me yet so I cannot recommend it.

Olivier Deriviere is confirmed to be composing the DLC score to Assassin's Creed IV: Freedom Cry. I like the samples and prefer his sound and style to Brian Tyler's. It has more character than the original. The vocal work is a nice touch!

Is anyone able to figure out what film themes the Aladdin ballet main theme sounds like? It is inherently familiar but I can't put a finger on it.

EDIT: Yeah that new Assassin's Creed music is awesome. Much better than Tyler's work for 4.

It's been a while since i've made a post here hasn't it? :P. But it gives me pleasure to present you all with the latest spoils i have acquired. Here we have Studio Ghibli's latest score courtesy of the ever so talented Joe Hisaishi. Keiji Inai is finally given a decent budget for a score and it is excellent :). Go Shiina who hasn't done many scores for anime delivers as well. Haven't been able to listen to DokiDoki 2 or Lighting Returns yet so you can judge that for yourselves for now :<.

Great scott! That is a huge haul! Sadly it doesn't seem like Yoshihisa Hirano is anywhere to be found in the arrangement credits so we won't be getting any FF13 style Warsaw music from lightning returns. I'm interested to hear what others think of this soundtrack. Is it more like 13-2 style heavy on electronics?

I will certainly be checking out the Hisaishi and Go Shina stuff but I don't know if I can stomach going through another FF13 score.

Those AC samples by Deriviere shows one thing, the thing that I knew since his Alone in the Dark score - guy is brilliant composer with great potential and he's just warming up:).

New FF XIII on the other hand is a lot like garbage bin. You know, people throw there many different things, some of them probably quite good, not necessarily broken, but most of things there smells unfunny and you don't want to put your hand in there. But I did that and found some decent stuff. At the beginning I trimmed 5 hours to 2 hours (after 10 second sample trip through playlist), but it's still far from being final cut. Lots, lots of boring fillers, bad electronica mess, tracks that lasts for decades without any reason. But there is also nice and decent music there, no doubt about that, the only problem is to find it. For example, Bhunivelze which seemed dreadful after first listen, would be awesome piece of music, if mixed properly (the choir is burried under everything else, it sounds like it was recorded in fallout shelter). It's not Hirano, no Warsaw, but - at times - it's just good music.

And what, new Shiina? AWESOME! :D

Thanks for the huge post, Leatherhead!(You've gotta start tagging the tracks, though.) Lotsa goodies there to get to.

Lightning Returns is kind of a bore so far. Haven't had a chance to listen to a lot of it yet, but aside from the standout tracks that have been in all the trailers and promos, the first disc is pretty disposable. Chances are good the album will get more interesting after the opening cinematic filler tracks(usually the worst part of most game soundtracks, these days) are out of the way. The first two XIII's were splendid, so I certainly hope that's the case.

Might be just my Macbook Speakers but every track I sampled from Outbreak Company sounds 100% synthesized. Kinda hard to tell with some tracks sounding more ambient than others.

The music itself strangely has an echo of Turn a Gundam in few tracks. I don't have time or willingness to sample other soundtracks, but thanks for the upload pack. :)

You should really try PreCure! Not much but there's some Tytania-esque Takaki in there... :)

And yes, Outbreak Company is cheap as shit. Pity. Some good music in there, some really, really good ludicrously orchestral cues... but no orchestra!

I gave it a try, but I think his music to a 2007 Mahou Shoujo anime Saint October is a lot more fun - on an even smaller budget!

Saint October OST - 15 - Saakuriddo! Kuro Loli Sanjou!! - YouTube (www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMLqkRdbEr0)

The track is about glorifying the appearance of a lolicon character. You know what to expect. ;-)

I hope someone would be so kind to give us a highlights of that Precure score. I don't have the patience for it.

Also this new score proves that any decent scores by Go Shiina in the past were not because of his talent but because of the arrangers. While both Kyousougiga and Outbreak are mostly synth, Outbreak is far superior musically.

EDIT: Also some really annoying source music pops up here and there in the Hisaishi but overall a lovely score.

New piano composition written by Masashi Hamauzu which I am guessing will be featured on Imeruat's next project. I thoroughly enjoyed his album Black Ocean and appreciated the compositions he wrote for it. Cirotto is by far my favorite work by him.

Idk i found myself liking Kyousougiga a little more than Outbreak Company. Both are good yes but Outbreak Company has a few to many throwaway tracks that sound like they belong in a bland slice of life anime (this is not keji's fault of course since the show itself doesn't give him much to work with in the first place). Kyou was very enjoyable throughout and has a wacky yet subtle style that matches the anime's over the top silliness as well as it's surprisingly touching and heartfelt moments.

This makes me hope Go Shiina continues to do more anime stuff =).

Also this new score proves that any decent scores by Go Shiina in the past were not because of his talent but because of the arrangers.

You say that as if it were in doubt until this score came along! ;)

Shiina has never been interesting - although I will say this for him: I was wrong - he DOES have a recognisable style, even when he is being propped up by arrangers... it's unfortunate that this unique style (with very specific melodic tendencies) simply isn't very good. With "Wataru Hokoyama in overdrive" adding structure, form, and instrumental colour to his melodies, interesting things have been known to happen... but really only because the "arranger" is actually composing.

Likewise Masashi Hamauzu - a recognisable style, and the ability to formulate interesting ideas but not a clue how to use, develop, or present them. Hirano "got" it - and wasn't afraid to invest more of his musical personality where Hamauzu's was lacking. The orchestrators who worked on Lightning didn't. They took bland, directionless music and dilligently expanded it into bland, directionless music for orchestra. With THREE SEPARATE CREDITED SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAS and a score-bombination of nearly 300 performers, you would think this latest Final Fantasy score could've been something special. Quite how it managed to turn out so unimaginably dull (and amateurish) is beyond my comprehension.

Even bearing in mind it's Hamauzu and thus entering with suitably lowered expectations.

Two people who have talent but NEED other talented collaborators to realise it.

Kyousou... meh... Keiji Inai is a composer. Go Shiina isn't. Inai had no money and barely any opportunity in Outbreak to write anything like a decent score and yet in the orchestral (I call them orchestral because that's what they are even if they're not performed as such) cues he doesn't cut any corners and is always thoroughly professional. There's music in there so well written and so skilfully arranged that you could print out scores, put them in front of the LSO, and stick the finished product in a big sci-fi movie and nobody would bat an eyelid.

Shiina's score, by comparison... Some nice melodies, very recognisable as Shiina's work, but ultimately whereas Inai's music sounded like a million quid and his performance sounded like 50p... Shiina's music and performance are both perfectly balanced.

Precure has some moments of pure vintage Takaki - about ten or fifteen minutes in grand total but since this is poxy Pretty bloody Cure, the mere presence of intelligent, symphonic music - regardless of its ratio to the complete crap - is, I think, very noteworthy.

Let us not forget that this is the franchise that, thus far, has given us some bouncy but annoying scores from Naoki Sato, and some utter bunk from Yasuharu Crapanashi...

Looking forward to it. :) Do you have a list of arrangers?

No idea about Shiina as I haven't listened to anything by him (maybe this will be a start), but I liked Hamauzu's FF XIII Piano Collection.
One problem with Hamauzu (besides the lack of arrangement skills) is that while his melodies are pleasant, there is very little harmonic variation in his music. He really seems to like major seventh. Listening to his piano redux of Fang's Theme only makes me appreciate Hirano's virtuosity.

Hamauzu composes like Ryuichi Sakamoto with more notes plus Debussy-ian/Ravel-ian touches. I wish it was the other way around.

What really made me guffaw with laughter was hearing Hamauzu's demo for Nascent Requiem - in other words, 100% of what [u]he wrote[/i] prior for giving it to Hirano in order to be turned into music. Confused rhythm, dense and colourless arrangement... and the melody frequently seems to completely run out of steam and the piece descends into noise. Harmonically dull, progressively dull. Compare Hirano's treatment of the piano interlude at 1:25 to 1:46 (of Nascent Requiem) to Hamauzu's version at 1:20 to 1:40 (of Last Battle Prototype+) - Hirano has elegance, and rhythmic movement. He prepares for the interlude with a kind of dissonant brassy prelude - and then brings in the piano. Strings provide harmony, snare drum provides accent, timpani play an offset, syncopated version of the theme itself. Dissonant brass stabs thicken the texture and rising chords lead to one final offhand statement of the motif on piano, before fragments of the motif get moved off to the strings with woodwind accents. And Hirano brings back the basic material from 2:38 to 2:56 but in an almost conventional, Vaughan Williams' style, leading to a modulation and development section with gradually introduced brass in counterpoint, then dissonant strings and woodwind iplay an almost dance-like minor-key variation on the motif (taking notice of the 3/4 time - why not hint at a waltz?) with screaming flutes and piccolos and a thrilling "twisted Hirano fanfare" section... which loops right back around to the original version of the piano interlude.

In complete contrast, Hamauzu launches straight into the same basic material (the stabbing piano chords) from an entirely unconnected section, string harmonies come in (but provide no additional notes, unlike Hirano's which add texture) and then it becomes an exercise in piling more and more instruments on top whilst repeating the same rhythm like a pneumatic drill. The additional instruments don't add any harmonies or melody or interest - they just add volume. Hirano gives the other instruments things to play that make a contribution to the structure of the piece, whereas Hamauzu uses them only for their visceral power. And then, SNAP - cymbals clash, everything changes again.

I know it's only supposed to be a "demo" but really... :D

Count me in with the camp who appreciates style over mere professionalism.

Perhaps there's bias in that: of course a fan is going to gravitate towards a work from said artist over a fairly nascent score from a promising artist who hasn't yet grasped much of their own style yet, but that's most of the problem. Even at its emotional highs, Outbreak Company is mostly generic pastoral strings, generic sad piano. The synth is impeccable, one of the few synth orchestral scores I've heard that make pains to sound every note sound with a convincingly human warmth. The bones are strong, it's a solid score

but maaaaaan those bones are bleached whiter than Rob Lowe's teeth. Being convincing is all it seemingly wants to do, and other than being convincingly old-fashioned, it shoots for, and thus achieves, little else.

I wanna hear more from Inai, though. Certainly more than from Katou.

Daniel Koschitzki: Blockflte
Stefan Glaus: Violine
Victor Plumettaz: Violoncello
Mischa Cheung: Klavier

Well, where to begin... first things first, this is a Livestream recording so don't expect any wonders. Only very few minor clicks and distortions this time around. The audio quality could be a lot better though. No HQ-Audio stream was available so we must take what we can get. But it's a shame because this is a really fantastic concert. I also liked how they informed everyone about proper concert etiquette and many children were present and you don't see them flip their shit whenever they heared the Zelda theme. Take notice, world.

Now on to the concert itself. I really loved it. My personal highlight is of course the Metroid Piece, a smashing cue that would not be out of place in a Metroid Motion Picture. We have essentially a conflict between Samus' Theme and Mother Brain's motif, briefly introduced at the beginning. Then follows an almost Rite of Spring treatment of the Prologue, Lower Norfair, Maridia and Crateria and finally the big battle against Mother Brain and the glorious reprise of the victor. My next favorite is the Wind Waker concerto: At the beginning I even got Wagner Vibes. It is not build around the Wind Waker Theme or The Legend of Zelda Theme as one would expect but instead Roger Wanamo focuses on Aryll's Theme. The classical band Spark is also a wonderful addition. I always said the music for Wind Waker works best for smaller ensembles and here we have the best of both worlds. The best renditions of Aryll's Theme are in the second movement. A lovely and elegant romantic piece. Ah and the Encore is fantastic as well, night and day from the 25th Anniversary arrangement.

So enjoy this fantastic concert and now that this Game Concert series has become "a tradition" for the WDR Rundfunkorchester Kln let's hope for more fantastic concerts in the future.

I still can 't believe they put a track from FFXIV on there. It is probably one of Uematsu's weakest soundtracks behind The Last Story.

tangotreats
11-23-2013, 10:36 PM
Yeah... whatever happened to Uematsu, the guy who wrote tunes? XIV was fairly mediocre - although Valtonen's flashy arrangement makes it, at the very least, listenable... which is more than I could say for the score itself...

Thank you very much for Selections - although I am finding it somewhat underwhelming. Lots and lots of repeats - not even a new fanfare - and a return to the "too many cooks" mentality that buggered up Legends. Fortunately, not "too many arrangers" but moreover "too many pieces" - leading to an underwhelming progression of short pieces that have nothing to do with each other (the concerto being the main exception, of course).

Valtonen's re-imagination of "Waterside" is quite lovely, but Monster Hunter is basically 99.9% the standard Hamaguchi arrangement. There was a chance to do something a bit different, to take a lesser-known part of the score and do what this concert series does so well - expanding it into a symphonic poem, looking at it from another perspective, throwing in a bit of creativity and seeing what happens... and what did they do instead? Played a ten-year-old arrangement of the Main Theme that's been played to death in the concert hall already.

Plus we get Wanamo's dull "Super Mario Galaxy" once again - and in a depressingly raggedy performance too; what the hell is going on at 2:11 to 2:18 - has the conductor popped off to the toilet or something? And again at 3:34 to 4:00 - intensely confused rhythm... not to mention, some truly atrocious brass playing running pretty much through to the end. And again at 6:54 - every section of the strings is out of sync with each other. And at 7:25. Fantastic trumpet crack at 7:53, and again at 8:00. Seriously, what the hell? Was there some beer festival in Cologne that evening?

Well for one he had different arrangers for Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon than he did for Last Story and FFXIV. I don't know enough about their individual talents to say which one was responsible for the good music in Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon though.

As heared in the game: Definetly but not as concert arrangements. I couldn'd stand Answers before but the performance in Returning Home and The Celebration won me over. On Windy Meadows was already part of Symphonic Odysseys so I would've prefered something from Ni No Kuni or Valkyria Chronicles instead. Still I have no problem with the selections, some variations are even superior to the original (Galactic Suite without the overblown choir).

It should be said that Shenmue and Monster Hunter were NOT arranged by Valtonen/Wanamo.
Gerudo Valley was arranged by Valtonen, not Wanamo.

Thousand thanks for Symphonic Selections! Not really sure what the disappointment's about. It says "Selections" right there in the title. Of course there won't be a lot of new stuff.

Anyway, will get around to listening to it shortly after I piece together my thoughts on Lightning Returns. Far, far from the strongest work of anyone involved, but there's some nice stuff here and there(mostly all the uptempo pieces). The big issue is how monotonous and droning it all is, a huge departure from the lovable insanity of XIII-2. After some initial disappointment, I was kinda diggin' the hypnotic, mellow turn the album was taking in the beginning, assuming things would branch out a little the further I go.

But nope. It kinda stays entrenched in the same rigid, modal sound most of the way through. Hope ya like abstract, chillout electronica, ostinati and smatterings of Middle-Eastern world music, cause that's all you're gonna get. The vast majority of it isn't that bad; I wouldn't even call it filler; it just runs together. Some are saying that things get a lil nuts around the end, but can't really say if I'll get that far. It felt like it had been hours before even getting past the first disc. Mother of God, what did they do to Fang's Theme? XD

Generally, it's the same problem I had with Lennie Moore's (vastly overrated) Outcast; a procession of superficially impressive music so devoted to consistency that it locks itself into the same endless, morose march from beginning to end, rarely interested in playing with tone or color. It's like a gorgeous new Mercedes, polished to a mirror shine and locked onto a track with no wheels. Prestigious make and model, lovely constituent parts, but none of it is going anywhere.

A major, major disappointment, but Hisaishi and Kyousougiga are more than easing the pain.

Wow if you liked FFXIII-2 and don't like this then I will for sure stay away. Thanks for posting your thoughts in detail.

Funny thing, when I was sharing with a friend my highlights from FFXIII-2 he mostly enjoyed all the electronic tracks while I only really enjoyed the symphonic tracks. So it was truly an instance where the things one person likes were the exact opposite that the other person likes. So there is certainly an audience for the droning electronic music.

Yup, One Man's Treasure...Forum discussion could be sooooo much more fun if more peeps realized that yes, someone can love something for the very reasons you hate it, or vice versa, and that disagreement is often enlightening.

Droning electronica's pretty fun, really, when you're in the mindset for it. It can be fun and relaxing to lose yourself in, but Lightning Returns isn't really a great example, even among Hamauzu's work. It's not bouncy and multi-faceted like Saga Frontier II, nor as striking as Sigma or his contributions to FFX. I suspect Hamauzu was riding his recent mellow mood artistically, having been doing solo work with Imeraut and muzak for photo exhibits prior to this, or the game itself really is as oppressively self-serious and ridiculous as everything known about it implies(probably both), but his heart just doesn't really seem in it. He lays the chilly groundwork well enough, this man can write some damn good atmospheric piano wandering, but there's little here that reminds me of why I love him to bite into.

Suzuki's better at electonica, anyway, and his pieces comprise most of the bright spots. Mizuta, for his part, returns(ha) to his more naturalistic side a la FFXI, in between battle themes and orchestral cues, only with superior performances and a flair for Hamauzu-esque string work that's starting to feel more like genuine influence instead of imitation as some suspected. Never listened to a lot of XI, but it's more or less the same dealie; pleasant, if not memorable.

Speaking of performances, there are actually a lot of gorgeous, gorgeous solos throughout the score almost constantly, from strings to woodwinds, guitars and even a warped lil bit of sax playing. Which makes it all the more a tragedy that the whole of it doesn't really stick. X-X

I've been working on this compilation for some time; I do hope you enjoy it. My home - London, England - has been inspiring composers for centuries and I thought it would be a good idea to collect together some of the many pieces that have been written about the city. There are some pieces in here you've probably heard before, and some you almost certainly haven't. There is some truly gorgeous music in here. :)

Enjoy!

Programme notes:

LONDON – a city with over two thousand years history, has inspired more composers than perhaps any other on Earth. This compilation mixes the old and the new, presenting old workhorse favourites alongside lesser-known pieces, united by their inspiration - the grand old city of London.

Philip Lane – London Salute (1982)
Royal Ballet Sinfonia, conducted by Gavin Sutherland, recorded 2001.
Composed to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), this piece has also been adopted as the unofficial theme tune of the BBC Concert Orchestra.

David Watts – Metropolis (A London Symphony) (1999) Second Movement: Solar City
Royal Ballet Sinfonia, conducted by Gavin Sutherland, recorded 2001.
Watts’ London Symphony was a commission from the London Schools Symphony Orchestra. The slow movement begins with a dissonant brass fanfare before a long, mysterious melody (first heard on the cor-anglais) evokes images of the city.

Paul Lewis – Festival Of London March (1960/1971)
Royal Ballet Sinfonia, conducted by Gavin Sutherland, recorded 2002.
Lewis first sketched out this piece in 1960, but didn’t get around to completing and orchestrating it until eleven years later. Somewhat reminiscent of Walton in the middle section, it’s a lovely and light picture of London and a splendid tribute to the British masters of the past.

Sir Edward Elgar – Cockaigne (In London Town) (1900/1901)
Scottish National Orchestra, conducted by Sir Alexander Gibson, recorded 1978
“Stout and steaky, honest, healthy, humourous and strong, but not vulgar” was how the composer described his musical picture of Edwardian London. Cockaigne is a medieval term used to describe a mythical utopia – a land of luxury and plenty. Londoners adopted the term to refer (in a tongue in cheek manner) to their city in the early 19th century, and thus the Cockney was born. In the piece, one can hear jovial market traders, bustling shopping streets, the famous Bow bells, and young lovers enjoying a romantic day in the park.

Eric Coates – London Suite – Knightsbridge and Westminster (1933)
BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult, recorded 1975.
“The man who writes tunes” (so described by Ethel Smyth) completed the London Suite in 1933 at the age of 47; it immediately found success on record as exposure to the wider public as a result of “Knightsbridge” being co-opted as a theme tune – for the BBC radio programme “In Town Tonight” which ran from 1933 to 1960. The piece is a charming march and describes Knightsbridge – a prestigious part of Central London most famous today as home of luxury Department store “Harrods”. “Westminster” is a sweeping romantic piece depicting the historical landmarks and Government institutions that inhabit the City.

Gustav Holst – Hammersmith – Scherzo (1930)
London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult, recorded 1972
Sadly, Holst’s reputation largely rests on one composition – The Planets – but there is so very much more to the man. He lived near Hammersmith (in Barnes) for some forty years and wrote this piece – a musical picture of people as well as places – in response to a commission from the BBC Military Band. He later arranged it for full orchestra.

Gordon Langford – Spirit Of London (1965)
BBC Concert Orchestra, conducted by Rumon Gamba, recorded 2003
The composer describes his piece, somewhat bitterly, as “a tribute to a once great city, Capital of a once great nation” but the music is anything but bitter. London has changed out of all recognition over the past sixty years – there have been some positive, and some heartbreakingly tragic. These notes are not the place to discuss or judge them, but it’s worth bearing in mind that they exist when evaluating this music. Langford’s London has more in common with Elgar’s and Vaughan Williams’ than it does with London of the mid 1960s. The piece is a glittering, wonderfully orchestrated (Langford’s talents as arranger can be heard in Raiders of The Lost Ark, Superman, Clash Of The Titans, and more) celebration.

Sir John Dankworth – Widespread World (Rediffusion London Call Sign) (1965)
Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Gavin Sutherland, recorded 2005.
Rediffusion London (formerly Associated Rediffusion) was the company contracted to provide the local ITV television service for London, from 1954 to 1968. As per the tradition at the time, each day’s broadcasting began with four minutes of orchestral theme music. Johnny Hawksworth’s world-famous “Salute To Thames” is probably the most iconic of these themes, but Dankworth’s earlier piece is nonetheless pure London and completely charming.

Ralph Vaughan Williams – Symphony No. 2 “A London Symphony” – 2nd Movement – Lento (1914)
London Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sir Adrian Boult, recorded 1971.
The composer indicated that the slow movement of his Symphony No. 2 was intended to evoke Bloomsbury Square on a November afternoon. There is a bitter chill to the music, but also an icy beauty not unlike Vaughan Williams’ Symphony No. 7. A fragile viola solo gives way to a powerful theme for violins, which is eventually expanded into a noble, grand passage for the full orchestra. The movement ends with quiet dignity.

Nigel Hess – New London Pictures – 2nd Movement “London Eye” (2003)
The Central Band Of The Royal Air Force, conducted by Nigel Hess, recorded 2012.
Written in response to a commission from the Surrey County Youth Wind Orchestra in 2003, Hess takes us on a “flight” aboard the London Eye – the tallest Ferris wheel on the European continent and, between 1999 and 2006, the tallest in the world. We are lifted high up above the River Thames, looking down on the majesty of the South Bank, the Houses Of Parliament, Big Ben, and dozens more of the city’s great landmarks.

Sir Arnold Bax – London Pageant (1937)
BBC Philharmonic, conducted by Martyn Brabbins, recorded 2000.
This piece was written for the Coronation of King George VI in 1937. Structurally it’s a traditional march, but it plays with the scope of a tone poem – a celebratory, ceremonial work that recalled Elgar and anticipated Sir William Walton.

John Ireland – A London Overture (1936)
London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Sir John Barbirolli, recorded 1965.
Ireland cobbled together “A London Overture” from fragments of his earlier “Comedy Overture” which had been commissioned in 1934 by the Crystal Palace Brass Band competition. It has been described as a companion piece to Elgar’s Cockaigne – but a comparatively later, more grown-up London – almost twenty years after the end of the First World War, London had moved on. Ireland’s inspirations for this piece are many and varied, but one famous influence came from the jovial cry of a bus conductor “Dilly – Pica-dilly!”

Robert Farnon – The Westminster Waltz (1956)
Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Adrian Leaper, recorded 1991
Robert “Bob” Farnon was born in Canada but in the mid 1940s decided to make England his new home. He remained until his passing in 2005, and during a career that spanned seven decades, made an absolutely unprecedented contribution to British light music. His skills as an arranger were well known and much sought after – celebrities such as Andre Previn and Frank Sinatra were in awe of his talents. This charming waltz, showing off Farnon’s flawless string writing, won the Ivor Novello Award for light music. Light, tuneful, and whimsical, it remains one of Farnon’s most loved and recognised compositions.

Um SirusJr, could you give me a link on "Which tracks were orchestral/not orchestral" on FFXIII-2 and FXIII? I've been trying to put together a VGM Compilation Series equivalent to your Loveliness, Elegance and Nobility Series. Most of the material I've been compiling together have been found here and on the other forums,; I've tried not including too much Final Fantasy Orchestrated Music, giving equal share to the major and minor titles out there. Also, I've been trying to find older orchestrated VGM music that didn't have a lot synthesizer or no synthesizer at all.

Well it is pretty easy to find if you look at the details on VGMDB because they will list which ones are performed by the orchestra on the details below the tracklist. For FFXIII-2, my highlight tracks are 106, 107, 111, 112, 118, 216, 306, 312, 313, 318, 319, 401, 406, 407, 410, 412, 413, 414, 416, 417, 418, 420. This should help you narrow it down.

Oh, a lot of synth in the newest Magi, still Amano's orchestrations but synth nonetheless :(. But the episode before had a fantastic new action piece so I assume that was from the original Warsaw recording session. Let's hope that there is enough unreleased material from that session that will appear on the second OST.
But the score I enjoy most this season by far, is Pokemon XY. Shinji Miyazaki at his absolute best. At times the symphonic quality is on par with Victini.

Quite... I'm assuming that the Warsaw cues we're hearing in this season are the leftovers from Series 1... and the depressingly cheap-sounding synth cues are the original score. What a confusing mishmash - and why hire Amano to be your orchestrator if you don't have an orchestra? Doesn't add up...

Nor does the concept of Series 1 being a really expensive, prestige score and Series 2 being some of the worst synth you ever heard... :(

I'm really hoping that they finally release another album for the original series. It's been about 2 years (after a couple months it will be 3) since the last Pokemon best album so I'm assuming if they release another OST it will have tracks from black and white since mostly everything in the first two series has been covered.

At least that's wishful thinking. But for some reason they seem to be really stingy about releasing pokemon music when it comes to the original series but are always faithful to releasing a movie OST. Maybe since movie tracks are used in the series they think that it's enough to please us? =/

Apparently, Ryuichi Sakamoto is releasing a sizeable orchestral album that coincides with his latest orchestra tour. The recording will feature the Tokyo Philharmonic and will have his hits such as Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and The Last Emperor. However, other works that have not yet seen orchestration will be appearing such as Amore and Bibo no Aozora. There are videos on YouTube and I love the full sound that these versions present. I don't believe I will ever tire hearing Mr. Lawrence or Last Emperor ;). I can't believe I missed the initial announcement! This album will be released on December 11th this year.

Here is the complete tracklist:

1. Still Life - orchestra version
2. Bibo no Aozora
3. Amore
4. Castalia
5. After All
6. Bolerish
7. Ichimei - small happiness~reminiscence
8. Theme for Yae
9. Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence
10. Rain
11. The Last Emperor
12. The Sheltering Sky
13. Aqua

And here is a high quality video playlist featuring a good amount of the works on the album.

Way back on page 152 (December 2009, folks - wow!) I posted something I was awfully proud of at the time - a vinyl transfer of Jerry Goldsmith's masterpiece Poltergeist. It was a good transfer - it still is - but with Poltergeist, "good enough" is never good enough, and since I have massively upgraded my playback equipment this year, I transferred it again this evening. Ohh, boy. I fear that you may hang yourselves if I go off on one of my "Goldsmith is God" journeys... so I'll keep it short and sweet. The score is magnificent - as I'm sure you all know because you've heard it a thousand times - but the vinyl transfer is just gorgeous. Please open the "Spoiler" to read a little more about why this should be, if you're interested - other than that, enjoy!

Transfer from near-mint condition German pressing on MGM Records. Some light restoration has been undertaken but a handful of clicks and thumps remain where removing them would have harmed the music. Restored scans included. FLAC at Level 8. No MP3 this time, folks - if any upload in the history of this forum deserved to be heard in FLAC, it's this one.

So, just downloaded and listened to this. Wow man, WOW!! The sound is so rich and so just WOW, it sounds so incredibly GOOD I cannot describe with words the auditory joy in my ears as I listen to this absolutely brilliant recording of one of Jerry Goldsmith's best scores! I have to say there is something about the sound quality on an LP that just trumps modern CD's. I don't know any of the technical stuff like a lot of you guys do, I just know when I pull out my LP's the music sounds better than my CD's and I love it :) This score is so good, it is epic and terrifying, sends chills down my spine!

Tango, thank you so much for sharing this with us, this has made my day :)

Does anyone like the steampunk genre? There is an interesting webseries called The World of Steam. The first episode features a man who lost his wife and is trying to create a likeness of her using technology. The music is really good also as it is brought to the forefront. I will let you all figure out who it is ;). I really love the part where the husband is dancing with his wife. The strings are so moving and that melody takes me back to the days when movie music had actual themes. It left me in awe!

JOHN WILLIAMS
The Towering Inferno (1974)
Studio Orchestra
conducted by The Composer
Orchestrations by Herbert Spencer and Al Woodbury

https://mega.co.nz/#!pphRwbzQ!bu6J70ZOT4wInrMpE7FZOSHv1htuChQHEBGUsxZ pI5g

My transfer, restoration, and digital remastering from vinyl. Scans included. If you want CUEs and LOGs you can kiss my chuddies.

The Towering Inferno; John Williams' early masterpiece. It is cruel irony indeed that time, technological failures, and coincidences have conspired to possibly rob us of the chance to ever hear all of this wonderful score in good quality sound.

It took almost thirty years for it to receive a CD issue; just when we'd all given up hope, Film Score Monthly released the score "complete" in 2001. Hopes were high, but sadly the final product did not live up to expectations. The sound quality on the FSM is uniformly awful due partially to deterioration (and loss) of the master recordings, but also due to poor handling, a poor transfer, and inadequate restoration technology available at the time.

The original soundtrack album, released in 1974, sounds a lot better but features just over thirty minutes of score - of which eight minutes is occupied with some very dated "easy-listening" variations on the film's themes, leaving only twenty minutes of score proper.

Here, then, is the original soundtrack album. I have transferred this myself from a mint(ish) condition WEA Records British vinyl pressing. I started this project because a vinyl transfer of this album was already posted (by Kooke, a transfer by Filmmusicman) and with the greatest respect to both parties I felt that it wasn't entirely sucessful. Like a big, feckin' eejit, I half-jokingly mused that I might be able to do better and before I knew what was going on, a copy of The Towering Inferno was spinning on my turntable...

I will not bore you with the long and tedious story of the remastering and restoration - that is, unless you're interested. I will mention briefly, however, that my goal in this restoration was NOT to completely remove every last tick, pop, click, and hiss. Such a goal is unrealistic and as proven by the transfer I mentioned earlier, frequently leads to crappy quality sound. There is (marginally) more noise on my transfer than on Filmmusicman's... but there's more music. All things - particularly noise reduction techniques - in moderation, ladies and gentlemen!

Please enjoy - I certainly enjoyed working on this one as I admit it's the first time I really paid any attention to this score... It's undoubtedly Williams gold. :)

Really? Wouldn't be a bad idea... the FSM sold out almost instantly, goes for silly money on eBay, is widely pirated, and stinks... It'd be quite hard for them to bugger it up as badly as FSM did, anyway... hopefully some better quality source material has come to light in the past twelve years - or at the very least, a decent transfer of what they have and somebody with ears in charge of the remastering... :D

Just wanted to posted this one track since tango shared his vinyl recording of the Towering Inferno. This performance here features more pronounced drum kit percussion in the Towering Inferno main title (unfortunately, missing in the Jaws main title).

I think someone should share a compilation with underrated John Williams compositions. I probably would pick way too many action cues that would never get played in a real concert.

Will post the complete album when I get over that drawn waist...

I have yet to hear a Prague recording (of film music, at least) which I would class as pristine-sounding... If Fitzpatrick got competent recording and mastering engineers, moved to a good recording venue (even after refurbishment, Smecky Studios still sound like shit) and doubled the rehearsal time, I might say it was worth doing. Sadly, all these things cost money and money is the one thing that re-recordings of film music doesn't make much of any more. The CoPP is better than it used to be... but ultimately it's still the poor man's choice...

Bearing that in mind, I think a TTI re-recording can never hope to surpass the original recording musically, and almost certainly won't sonically either... so I'd rather have the original recording properly remastered... unless somebody finds 200,000 and does it right, that's our best bet...

In many cases, it is/was the ONLY choice. Although today I would clearly prefer the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, because they're an orchestra on the rise (keep hiring musicians where other orchestras are reducing staff), plus they're ACTUALLY an orchestra. The Prague one is a telephoned-together ("pick-up") band that may consist of different musicians on different days - sometimes even on the same day!

I think that the recordings EDEL did at the Dvork Hall (Rudolfinum) sound much better than anything done at Smecky - then and now. It has a real "classical sound", and much more depth to the soundstage. It was a conscious move back then to change venues because Smecky sucked.

tangotreats
12-02-2013, 02:24 PM
Quite - in a world of Prague or bust, you'll choose Prague... Also, quite right - "City Of Prague Philharmonic" is code for "any competent musician within reasonable distance of Prague who isn't busy the day you need the orchestra"!

The Rudolfinum is quite lovely... architecturally and acoustically. A far cry from that horrible tin box they called Smecky. When I was making enquiries about hiring the CoPP a few years ago I asked about recording there... it shoots the price up like you wouldn't believe. If memory serves, they also offered a smaller studio at Czech Television for a little bit less than Smecky - apparently it's a good studio but won't fit more than 45-50 players. That suited my needs at the time but ultimately I got offered a better price elsewhere...! (Still working on the music...)

A trio of uploads this evening, gents. First, a re-post/upgrade of a classic post:

TOLGA KASHIF
Queen Symphony (2002)
(featuring melodies composed by Queen)

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (leader: Rolf Wilson)
The London Voices (director: Terry Edwards)
The London Oratory School Schola (director: Michael McCarthy)
John Lenehan (piano)
Nicola Loud (violin)
Franois Rive (cello)
Tolga Kashif (conductor)
Julian Kershaw (orchestrator)

Well, from that list of credits, you know you're going to get something special... but how special? Very special. If you're expecting just another "classic rock" album, with limp orchestrations of well-known songs, your expectations will be exceeded. Tolga Kashif's work is, in fact, a fully fledged six movement symphony - constructed from the ground up with Queen's raw material. Not merely arrangements of Queen songs, but as the name implies, a coherent concert piece in its own right that utilises the melodies and harmonies.

The style is shamelessly filmic - some commentators have noted this as a weakness, and one of the usual spectacularly imbecilic Amazon reviewers has written it off as "funeral music", but in my opinion they're rather off the mark. Julian Kershaw, who orchestrated the piece from Kashif's very detailed sketches due to time constraints, frequently works with George Fenton - his work can be heard on The Blue Planet, Deep Blue, Planet Earth, and Earth - amongst others, and for other composers, Stardust, Around The World in 80 Days, and Dinotopia.

So, what we have here is an hour of hopelessly romantic, grandoise, sweeping, fun, and not at all tawdry, symphonic music - which really allows the source material to shine. Queen's music always had a certain symphonic quality in its construction - so of course it made sense that a piece like this should be written sooner or later!

The piece received its world premiere in the Royal Festival Hall in London, on November 6th 2002. The piece was recorded by the same forces in the studio at around the same time as the concert, yielding this CD.

Some people say this is the biggest piece of crap ever made. Some people say it's 21st century classical music's finest masterpiece. It is neither; it is what it is - a massive symphonic love letter to Queen. It's heaps of fun, and it's well worth your time - even if you don't like Queen.

This is a lossless RIP from my own disc, an acquisition owed entirely to Tango's quoted post above. No scans though... too lazy :-\

ARNOLD SCHOENBERG
GURRELIEDER
Philharmonia Orchestra and Voices, City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus
Conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen
FLAC + CUE + LOG | 22 Tracks | 1h48min | 422.7 MB

Waldemar - Stig Andersen
Tove - Soile Isokoski
Waldtaube - Monica Groop
Klaus-Narr - Andreas Conrad
Bauer - Ralf Lukas
Sprecher - Barbara Sukowa

One of the reasons that Gurrelieder is so little performed is the sheer size of the forces required: a 150-piece orchestra (including 10 horns, four doubling as Wagner tubas and a battery of percussion), male chorus, mixed chorus and five soloists, including a speaker. The text comprises, in German translation, a selection of poems from Danish poet Jens Peter Jacobson’s Songs of Gurre, based on a medieval legend. And, with its themes of dead lovers reunited through the redeeming power of nature, Schoenberg was clearly still under the influence of Wagner. The difference is that, while Tristan and Isolde shun the day and crave the night, King Waldemar, having lost his lover Tove to his wife’s jealousy, suffers tormented nights and longs for the renewal of spring – heralded at the end of the cantata by the dawning of a new day.

Big. Loud. Beautiful. Awesome.

GURRELIEDER

Uhh... you do realise what you've posted here, right? Arguably the finest performance of the notorious Gurrelieder ever recorded... and believe me, I've listened to them all.

This is a live recording made in the Royal Festival Hall on February 28th 2009. I had the overwhelming pleasure to be in attendance on the night. The BBC recorded (and broadcast) the concert and I promised to post that recording nearly four years ago - I never did because I was disappointed with the sub-standard 192kbps MP3 (the best you could get from BBC iPlayer at the time) and I had no idea that the recording would be properly released.

Magic happened, on that cold February evening. Crazy, unexplainable, electrifying magic. It was obvious that something good was happening from the downbeat, but as the music progressed, people started to listen... I mean, really listen. The orchestra looked a little scared. Salonen was exhilarated. The audience were hanging on every note. I'd never experienced anything like it in my life. Even my at-the-time fiance, who had a pronounced aversion to classical music (and to Schoenberg particularly) and whom I had selfishly dragged along for a "culture infusion", ended the piece emotionally exhausted and completely overwhelmed.

After it finished, the hall emptied out - hundreds of stunned people in a mass exodus onto the street. We made for the car park and encountered a few members of the choir who literally gushed about the performance they'd just given. They had performed the piece (with the same forces) in Birmingham Symphony Hall and night before and thought they'd almost cracked it that night (the performance got rave reviews) and then immediately they came to London to do it all over again... and they (choir, orchestra, soloists, conductor alike) absolutely went for it with the memories and experiences of the previous night still fresh in their minds.

Here are the full performance credits from the night, as scanned from my concert programme - they're in PDF format. Sorry it's a bit crinkled up; this sheet travelled home in my trouser pocket...

Lyrics: Rico Shioya, Japana Esperanto-Instituto (translation)

Album Information (VGMdb) (http://vgmdb.net/album/43029)

(I had to think of this Esperanto encounter...this marching song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DR7gL7pPdyc).)

EDIT: Having read tango's plea, here are some of my thoughts. I think after Fullmetal Alchemist and Xam'd, this is the third score with a substantial song. Hopefully, there's an instrumental main theme version in the film score without the beats. I didn't even notice the (supposedly/understandably cheesy) electric piano being annoying. I like the/any sound of e-pianos, I think.

Don't worry if you don't have the Esperanto libretto lyrics. Listen to this, and/or Schnberg's Gurrelieder, like...pop music. When you read the text afterwards, it makes the enjoyment even/only better.

Ohh, thank you! :D

What a lovely song... the electric piano fell straight out of the 1980's but Oshima makes it work... Excellent vocalist, tasteful accompaniment... Not the first time we've heard a little bit of Oshima channelling Hisaishi, either...

Also thank you nextday for the Kanno theme (really enjoyed it - will try out the drama too) and the Taiga news... I can't tell you how much I'm looking forward to that one... I just hope Kanno is in his extravagantly-symphonic mode, not in his endless-electronics mode... (I massively enjoy the latter, but it's time for him to write his orchestral magnum-opus, after years of experimental electronica.)

I would like to make a plea to this good thread and the fine netizens herein: It can't have escaped anybody's notice but just lately (the last six months, perhaps longer) there is a certain trend emerging here - hit the "like" button instead of commenting. I'm guilty of it myself and it's a very useful tool if you don't necessarily have anything to say but would like somebody to know that you reacted positively to what they said or what they posted... but overuse - and that's where I think we're heading - is dangerous. We are in danger of becoming a thread full of download links and random fragments of industry news / release speculation, glued together with "Mickey Mouse and 34851275 others like this".

A "like" is nice... but wouldn't you all rather hear something a little more personal? A recent compilation I posted garnered eight "likes" and several hundred downloads, and just a single, solitary comment. Some of the folk who hit "like" immediately started a conversation about track listings for some other random album! ;)

If it were just some random album that I bought, ripped, and posted, that'd be fair enough... but it was a labour of love, a personal project. I bought albums especially to populate it. I did research, experimentation, repeated listening, etc. I designed art work.

I know many others contribute personal compilations / rips / transfers to the thread too - and I feel for them when they go to so much trouble, invest something of themselves in their posts, and nary a whisper of the most basic kind of human communication offered in response.

I do realise it can be occasionally difficult to find the time (and the words) - not to mention some people who are still weary and reticent to speak as a result of unprovoked personal assaults from certain resident hypocrites... but the best advice I can offer (and I'm giving myself this advice too) is to have confidence in your own opinions and... just say lots of stuff! If you love something, say so... If you hate something, say so. If you think what I just posted is a big crock of shit, say so. If you think it's the most orgasmic music you've ever heard in your life and you want to marry me and have my babies, say so.

This thread has great music, but it also had great people and great discussion. Other threads have had great music, and they're long gone. This one survives because of the last two factors - the first factor merely enables them. 2014 will be the seventh different year in which this thread has existed. I can't speak for anybody else, but in this thread I have discovered great things, made great friends, and learned so much - about myself, about music, about the world. Yes, some of it has comprehensively sucked as well, but without the bad stuff, the good stuff has no meaning.

:)

What are some pieces/works that were either inspired or lifted off from Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe? As a Ravel fanatic and especially of Daphnis et Chloe, I want to track them all down. It's interesting that Japanese composers LOVE this work (also, French music in general).

Some works/pieces off the top of my head:

1. Goldsmith's Legend
2. Oshima's "Avant Title" from Arc the Lad, "Moon" from Symphonic Luna sea. There's more but that's all I can think of for now.
3. Yoko Kanno's "Creation" from the album of the same title(too similar to "Lever du jour" but orchestration is a bit different as usual). "Quiet Landing" from Turn a Gundam. "Take my Hands" from Escaflowne the Movie. This has to be her favorite work.
4. Horner: I can't remember the exact score(s) but there HAVE to be some out there!

A little input would be very appreciated! And if you haven't listened to this absolute masterpiece, you MUST DO IT NOW: Daphnis et Chlo - Ravel - Dutoit (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHrstmOPKBQ) :D

5. Joel McNeely's The Destruction of Xizor's Palace (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_deMfDs9jY) from Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.

For anyone wondering about the plagiarisms, in this track it's Mahler's 8th, then Walton's The Quest, then Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe.

Thanks for posting the Patema theme song!

The same e-piano sound also appeared in YOU WERE THERE.
I'm a bit disappointed because Watanabe Hitoshi is not here... to me, an Oshima song is not an Oshima song without his bouzouki

Sakamoto Maaya's Vento also used Esperanto lyrics. It's composed by Mina Kubota. A very beautiful song. One of Maaya's best after she ceasing regular collaboration with Yoko Kanno.

Thanks for the Patema, Salat. A bit short, the piano does sound odd, but I still love it. Would have bought it myself but I have yet to find a way to buy songs on iTunes Japan that doesn't involve gift cards... Oh and I'd make it the 5th score if you include Sora no Woto ("Servante du feu") and ICO ("ICO -You were there-").

tango, I have high hopes for Gunshi Kanbee. It's his biggest project to date and won't have electronics if this excerpt from a recent interview is anything to go by:

I am currently working on two projects that have completely different directions. One is a Japanese traditional TV drama (Gunshi Kanbee) and the other one is for a brand new sci-fi TV drama for a younger audience (Ando Lloyd). For the sci-fi one, Im mainly using synthesizers to build the sounds for the sci-fi world, but Im selecting more "earthy" and "raw" sounds for the traditional drama. When considering what instruments to use, I focus on what type of world view and time period I am trying to portray in order to make the content look at its best.

JOHN SCOTT
Mountbatten - The Last Viceroy

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
conducted by
John Scott

HOW TO GET THE DOWNLOAD LINKS: This album is thirty years and this transfer was made from a pressing from another label, but the initial release in 1985 was by Varese Sarabande... so the usual embargo applies. PLEASE SEND ME A PERSONAL MESSAGE if you would like this. Requests in thread will receive no response. Once you have it, please feel free to circulate it - if you want to make torrents, put it on forums, give it to your mates, go right ahead! My only requests are a) no recodes, and b) don't circulate my links - re-upload it yourself. Thank you.

New CD artwork (featuring rescanned and restored photography) designed in the style and spirit of the original Vinyl LP cover included. New programme notes included. FLAC at Level 8.

John Scott’s “Mountbatten – The Last Viceroy” is arguably one of his finest works… and it has waited for an official CD release for almost thirty years – and it’s still waiting. Varese Sarabande released the score on LP and Cassette in 1985, and a number of bootleg CDs (with varying sound quality) entered the market about a decade ago.

Sadly, the most frequently circulated transfer was produced on a malfunctioning turntable from a worn LP, and is absolutely to be avoided. I produced a cassette transfer of my own in 2009 which was overall respectable but not as good as it should have been due to improper azimuth adjustment on the transfer deck. The 2001 bootleg by Movietrack Classics (manufactured in the Czech Republic but actually produced in Great Britain – rumours persist that Scott himself was responsible) is probably the best so far (a surprisingly competent mixture of cassette and vinyl transfer) although it does have its shortcomings.

No release to date has attempted to ameliorate basic issues with the source material – noise and pilot hum (Cassette and LP), hiss (Cassette), and harsh equalisation (Predominantly Cassette; the LP suffers to a lesser extent).

This new release is, I believe, the best of the lot and probably as good as we’ll ever get until the master tapes are uncovered and an official CD release is finally produced.

I have used as source material, an unplayed, factory sealed LP (the Canadian pressing) which I have transferred to the digital domain with audiophile equipment. It has received a careful restoration and remastering; the transfer and subsequent processing took place at 96,000hz 24-bit, before a final downsampling to 44100hz 16-bit for distribution and release. Minimal, non-invasive de-clicking, de-rumbling, and de-hissing was employed. Re-equalisation was employed, using the Cassette release, other commercially-released Scott scores as a reference. The result is a restoration of tonal balance, permitting this score to be heard, for the first time, in natural and realistic. Hum and pilot tones have been forensically filtered.

I have retained the track naming scheme from the Movietrack Classics bootleg; I believe the original, official release to be in error in this regard. PLEASE NOTE that despite the appearance of an additional track ("Aftermath") there is no additional music on either the Movietrack Classics bootleg or this edition. The extra track exists because of a re-ordering of the existing material.

Enjoy! :)
TT

Ah, lovely! Thank you! There's no doubting the quality of this score, that's for sure... how does Kanno manage to sound convincing no matter what genre she's working in? That said, I will admit that this doesn't satisfy my Kanno craving... Light, melodious, infectious, warm... is wonderful, but I'm sure I can't be alone in wishing for Kanno to return to adrenalin-infused full on symphonic spectacle. Stuff at the level of Aquarion. That would go down really, really well about now - particularly with a disturbing number of anime scores going to the likes of Tatsuya Kato and various other morons... we badly need a ginormous-budget explosion of Kanno creativity to remind them all how it's done...

It's like getting a Say Hello, when all ya need is an Escaflowne. Someday soon, let's hope. There's always more epics to score.

What Gochiso reminds me of most is Napple Tale, and a return to that whimsical, airy tone is certainly welcome. The classical influences are obvious, but it all sounds great, not to mention a breath of fresh air from all the heavily processed and just plain heavy stuff dominating recent scores.

If you like orchestra + choir also check out RVW's Dona Nobis Pacem, Toward the Unknown Region, and Riders to the Sea. Holst, RVW's BFF, wrote a ton of choral works such as the Cloud Messenger which is great (and sounds like Shostakovich in parts.) Also, a choral fantasia called A Choral Fantasia, and his first choral symphony call First Choral Symphony.

I honestly wouldn't mind an entire album of Kanno playing piano arrangements of her hits. I wish I could have went to Otakon this year to see her Piano Me concert. As for her orchestral works, I agree with Tango. I would love another Aquarion :). Why is she off the radar lately? She used to put out several projects a year and now she writes main themes and obscure pop compositions every now and then.

First up, a little over two and half hours of music by Mina Kubota. The music is gentle, relaxing and touching. As you might expect, much of it is comprised of piano/strings with a bit Celtic fare mixed in. It's quite a pleasant work. Enjoy.

None of the new orchestral music is in that compilation... it seems to be exclusively old tracks from previous games...

why was music type was super Mario 64 slider & super Mario land ?

I listened to super Mario land its a violin and orchestra instrument ?

what count as of an orchestra track

serious question

My first impression of the new Yoko Kanno is it is too classical. I know, vague complaint but it sounds like I am just listening to recordings of classical music. It is not different enough in style to suggest this is a score from an anime. It has the same instrumentation in many parts that keeps me from enjoying a lot of classical. Maybe it will grow on me over time but for now it isn't doing much for me.

simonwu20923
12-11-2013, 08:32 AM
how is being too classical ever a bad thing though? It's true that Kanno's newest score wasn't as explosive or extravagant as before, but considering it's a score for a TV Drama about cooking I believe she did a wonderful job.

After Kanno's seemingly endless, albeit sometimes disturbingly catchy, diversion into being a pop writer with Macross Frontier it's lovely to hear something so exclusively orchestral from her. Everyone wants her next Aquarion or even Cowboy Bebop but until that point in time this will certainly do! Also, is it just me, or does anyone else wish that more of the Macross Frontier music had full orchestral arrangements? Some of the melodies in the pop-orchestra hybrid pieces are damn catchy tunes.

P.S. Long-time (read: years) lurker here. Many belated thanks to all those involved in this fantastic thread.

Oh I love pure orchestral Kanno. It is just that many cues here are too similar to styles of classical chamber music that never grabbed me.

Haydn-era classical isn't my thing either. It seemed like an exercise in the early-classical style, so it ends up being pretty meh. It seems counter-productive to invent new "classical" music when using existing pieces would likely have been perfectly suitable (and royalty-free) so without context I can't quite grasp what I'm hearing. Would the liner notes of the CD talk about what Kanno was going for here? Are there any recent interviews that explain her modus operandi?

They picked someone else to do the next Aquarion :( And if you compare to the rest of the franchise, Macross Frontier had about the usual balance for a main Macross series. Those have always been half about the pop singing.

But yes, I get what you mean. It'd be nice for someone doing a long series to just set her loose to go nuts with a full orchestra like in the old days. She hasn't done a Gundam in a while, and there is supposed to be another of those coming up, if I remember right - a redo of the original series, I think.

Yamashita's soundtrack for the J-drama Otto no Kanojo has been out for a week. Two, three track samples I heard were pretty good. The chance of seeing a rip any time soon is nigh nil, however. :'(

tajdjd, what are you looking for specifically? Are you just looking for wind band music? Herr Salat has posted a bunch of them here.

Thanks for the suggestions. I really like English choral music in general so these will be really good. I already have Cloud Messenger somewhere but can't remember how it goes. Just bought Riders to the Sea since that has been in my list for long.

What are some pieces/works that were either inspired or lifted off from Ravel's Daphnis et Chloe?
Forgot this obvious one among others: 11 Promised World - RahXephon Pluralitas Concentio OST (www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUDTE81AduY)
Not as polished or varied of an orchestral piece but it was her first anime/orchestral soundtrack so all's good.

No, both have the same gold cover. The 2006 release is a DSD remastered version of the original 1992 release (only the obi is blue). 2013 is the "mastered for iTunes" release only for iTunes.

By and large, they are the same thing unless you really are suckered into this new iTunes master. The 2006 release is available here: Classics T-Square & Royal Philharmonic Orchestra [CD] (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VRCL-2035).

Better yet, if you just wanna buy the original release, there is a Marketplace seller on Amazon Japan who is willing to ship it overseas for less than $15 total depending on where you live.

I'm not trying to sound like a dick but less than 5 minutes of Googling got me all that information.

And here's the other CD, the orchestral soundtrack for the NHK morning drama Watashi no Aozora (My Blue Sky). The themes "My Blue Sky" and "Toward a Dream" are particularly memorable and the performance by the Czech Phil definitely helps. The rest of the soundtrack, performed by a studio orchestra of around 50-60 musicians, is pretty pleasant as well. You might want to skip track 19 though, it's loaded with guitars and percussion and totally breaks the mood.

I actually had no idea Yusuke Homma was an orchestrator. The only other work of his that I'm familiar with is Ohedo Rocket (big band jazz) so if someone could reupload the ones in this thread (Thread 105103), I'd appreciate it.

As expected, it's short like LWA. Still lovely though. leatherhead will probably post a lossless rip of this later today.

By the way, I recently read that Patema's soundtrack has a total of nearly 50 tracks ranging from synthesizer to full scale orchestra (around 80 musicians). So maybe that one won't be as short.

I don't quite get the excitement you have over this album. The "orchestration" adds nothing to the melodies that should have retired more than 10 years ago. Sakamoto's popular pieces (MC Mr.L, Rain, etc.) have good tunes but far too repetitive without adding variations in arrangements. The trio version from 1996 was more than sufficient and Sakamoto just churned out the same thing in "04", "05", "Ultimate Films", "Playing the Piano", etc.... I watched the video you posted earlier (the orchestra playing Mr. Lawrence), and the music felt way too small. The entire orchestra was playing the same note that a single violin and cello were playing in 1996... and they were sitting still for half the time. Even as a fan, I have to wonder what he was going for in here.

JBarron2005
12-18-2013, 06:57 PM
Really? I didn't feel the sound was too small, but it was almost the exact same as Forbidden Colors minus the vocal from Cinemage. Although I did like the YMO arrangements which have not yet appeared (to my knowledge) and Aqua was beautiful. I really did like that one the most. But yeah, I would like to see an orchestra cd with new compositions on it. He does have a habit of releasing the same themes over and over. With that all aside, I still plan on adding it to my collection eventually.

Yeah, I collect those. Just adore the arrangements. The first "Hooked on classics" were pretty basic in terms of arrangement, but later he applied a marvelous personal style to the songs, and "The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Plays Abba" (Disky DCD 5246) for instance is probably one of the best example of pop-orchestral arrangement I could have heard.

If someone appreciate I'll upload more.

hooked on classic volumes 1-4 such greats albums

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Plays Abba is ok notting special but the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra Plays Abba is simply amazing

shame they inist more orchestra that played abba

when they do they all play the same songs lets hear tiger , lay all your love on me , super trooper & that's me played by an orchestra

though james last did do some other track he more trumpets before orchestra

I just wanted to say "Thank you" for all the recent uploads. Special thanks to LeatherHead for his efforts. It's good to be back and now I finally have enough time to give every score close attention. I even have one or two goodies for christmas.

Also, I decided to give Space Brothers a go and by god, that show is so damn good. I'm really loving it. Hoping for a release of the concert tomorrow.

I'm on Episode 32 right now so I still have a long way ahead of me. But it keeps getting better every episode and I hope that won't change anytime soon. There is something so universally appealing about this show. It doesn't feel like it's pandering to any specific demographic. It's completely genuine, honest and optimistic and rekindled my love for space exploration as well as SciFi in general.

ARGH, you have no idea how much I envy you... dozens and dozens more episodes left for you to watch...

You're right, it's completely genre busting and demographic busting. It's a show about people. It doesn't rush, it doesn't play the bullshit game, and it doesn't patronise the audience. There's no "every female in the series decide to g on holiday together, where they play volleyball on the beach in risque swimwear" episode. It is, as you say, completely honest... and it may be the most gentle anime I've ever seen. It even manages to avert most of the "anime tropes" you're expecting. So many times some stuff has happened and I've thought, "Oh, lord, I've just figured out the next ten episodes" and then they go and do something different.

In about thirty episodes, Mutta meets a really grumpy, threatening looking astronaut on a training mission. The set-up is 100% "let's introduce some conflict between these two" - Watanabe's score plays up the tension, it looks like those two are going to come to blows... Over the next few episodes, we find out he's a nice guy, we get a bit of his back-story, we find out why he is the way he is, and Mutta comes to depend on him. Eventually, this guy ends up offering Mutta some friendly advice that's a direct catalyst for him and eventually ends up helping him get one step closer to his dream. Like 99% of the characters in Space Brothers (with the exception of the Fire Extinguisher Man!) there aren't really any bad guys. There are just people doing what they can, and the show reminds us that everybody is the way they are for a reason - and often we get big insights into those reasons. Mutta has a way of reaching - and allowing himself to be reached by - these seemingly impenetrable characters.

He figures out Azuma, Vincent Bold, Nitta, Furuya, and Pico Norton; he connects with them, he lets them connect with him, and the end result time and time again is genuine mutual respect. Nobody else really understands how to deal with those guys, but the moment he meets them you can see the cogs turning in Mutta's head.

I'm less thrilled with Hibito's storylines, but only because Mutta is such a strong character that it makes his younger brother seem a bit vapid by comparison. We've seen a lot of evidence that Mutta will do incredibly well as an astronaut, but we only get to see hints of Hibito's skills when he has his accident. Everybody who knows him speaks very highly of him, but we only get brief glimpses into WHY. Hence, my interest slightly wains when we're off with Hibito although since his recent vulnerabilities I've found new moody, uncertain, lacking confidence, Hibito-without-his-mojo very interesting and a welcome antidote to annoying gung-ho showoff he's been so far...

I can't tell if they're trying to portray Mutta as an infinitely more suitable astronaut than his brother. It would make sense for that to be the case, spotlighting the tragedy that it took Mutta this long to finally seriously pursue his dream, but it's also interesting that so many of Mutta's life experiences are playing directly into his quest to become an astronaut. It's almost as if they're saying that Hibito was the young prodigy who raced through everything on momentum; the celebrity astronaut... Mutta may well be late, and older than Hibito, but he will become the great astronaut. Mutta's sixth sense arguably saved his brother's life following the rover crash. Hibito seems to be realising his own limitations at exactly the same time that Mutta is realising his strengths. Just another one of those parallel comparisons the show does so beautifully.

But the real star of the show is Apo. I love that ugly little bastard so much!

It has to be doing something right if it can unite me and my (almost) sixty year-old mother who hates anime, hates cartoons, hates science fiction, and really hates subtitles. None of that matters. Every Saturday lunchtime, I get a knock on the door and "Have the subtitles for this week's Space Brothers shown up yet????"

In case anyone here is interested, it seems the staff(director, writer) from Star Driver are making another mecha anime with Bones again called Captain Earth (http://captain-earth.net/) for next year bringing Satoru Kousaki/Monaca gang back for the music.

So they released trailers for Captain Earth? Sweet! Shame about that lame character design...

Speaking of Earth, I dunno which one you have to be living on to consider Space Dandy(and a ton of other BONES stuff), more Mushishi, more Silver Spoon, and whetever the hell Pupa is going to be a weak start, but I sure don't wanna live on it. The new season looks incredible.

Expect english tracklists for stuff soon...

Funny thing about that. The character designer they hired is known only for hentai manga.

And yes, it's weak as a whole. Winter always is. There may be a few things that will be worthwhile but the rest is filler.

Eh, agree to disagree. For someone powerfully disinterested in watching literally every single thing that comes out, just having one or two worthwhile series, let alone the 5+ powerhouses coming this January, is more than enough reason for the season in my book.

I highly recommend you and mother try out Silver Spoon too then. From what you are describing Space Brothers to be I bet it would be a perfect fit for you guys. Has pretty much the same vibes of realism but the only sad part is it isn't a long running shounen show like Space Brothers. Second season starts this coming season though so it'll help expand a little more on an already enticing series ^_^.

Yeah, sure. I like to watch many things so winter is always slow to me. I guess I'll attempt to catch up on Space Bros or something if my attention span allows me to.

Well they're both award-winning manga animated by the same studio. The key difference is that Silver Spoon is adapted from a shounen manga and Space Brothers is adapted from a seinen manga. Perhaps geared towards different audiences. I haven't checked it out so I don't know.

Space Brothers was nominated for the 2nd and 3rd Manga Taisho Award and won the 35th Kodansha Manga Award and the 56th Shogakukan Manga Award in the General category. Silver Spoon won the 5th Manga Taisho Award and the 58th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shounen category.

Thank you very much, will do! :)

I actually think it being short will run in its favour. I like something that has a beginning, a middle, and an end. That's the one thing that annoys me about Space Brothers; the same thing that annoys me about all "we're making the anime before the manga has finished" shows... One of three possibilities:

a) The Space Brothers Scenario: You start up and have no idea how many episodes you'll get. You adapt the manga closely, you pace your show nicely so you don't run out of story to adapt, and you keep on running for as long as the production company will let you. One day, they tell you you've been cancelled and you have to rush through an obvious tacked-on ending.

b) The Dragonball Scenario: You start up and have no idea how many episodes you'll get. You run through the manga too quickly and you run out of storyline. You waste weeks and months on ludicrous side stories leaving the main plot completely stabled whilst you wait for the manga author to turn out a new volume. You end up with literally hundreds of episodes and only about 50 episodes of content.

c1) The Most Other Shows Scenario: You start up and you know exactly how many episodes you'll get. You write an original series based heavily on the manga but it begins to deviate very early on. It's a worthwhile and interesting creation in its own right, and it has a unique and properly paced ending. The manga is still valid if you're that interested, but the anime provides a satisfying conclusion.

c2) The Most Other Shows That Do Unexpectedly Well Scenario: You start up and you know exactly how many episodes you'll get. You finish up your series nice and cleanly, and then six months later, just after you've finally moved on and started making something different, you get told that due to the show selling 100,000,000,000,000,000 DVDs or getting insanely high ratings in repeats, you've got to do a bonus OVA, a series of bonus OVAs, a new 11-episode series, a movie, a trilogy of movies, or all of the above. Since you already finished the story but you still have to make more episodes, you end up with a shameless and infuriating Dallas moment ("It was all a dream!"), a clumsy reboot in an "parallel universe" or an "alternate dimension", a complete retcon in which you pretend the last three episodes never happened and the audience should just shut up and go with it, or you write that all the bad shit that was happening in series 1 but got completely absolutely 100% resolved unfortunately started again just moments after the end credits rolled, so we're back for basically more of the same, and the emotional payoff of the first series is rendered completely void. (See Gundam Seed / Destiny for a prime example of this... I watched Seed, really enjoyed it, watched the retrospective OVA, loved it... started watching Destiny... WHAT? The same bastards who were fighting before suddenly started fighting again! They forgot everything they learned in the last FIFTY DAMN EPISODES I watched. Now they're back to chasing each other in ludicrously-colourful mobile suits trying to shoot each other's bollocks off all over again like nothing ever happened. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU...!

Silver Spoon sounds interesting and I will be checking it out and let you guys know how I like it.

The whole filming while the series isn't done yet is happening with the Game of Thrones series as well. Though when they started there were five books out, there are still five books out and the author doesn't seem to be likely to finish the sixth and seventh books anytime soon. Most likely, they will end up reaching the point where they have to make up their own ending for what happens after book 5. It is going to be interesting how they end up going about it.

Right now there's enough material for them to make it to a 7th season which means 2017 at the current pace. I think he'll at least be able to finish the sixth entry by then (he's aware of the need to pick up the pace). The real problem is the final novel...

So, it's nearly that time of year again... as the first of a few little Christmas gifts I plan to post over the festive season, I want to begin by sharing with you a short British film. I'm sure everybody knows The Snowman to some extent, but few outside of the UK are aware of its 1998 cousin. Despite being made fifteen years after The Snowman, The Bear makes one feel as if no time has passed at all. For me, this is the film that signals Christmas has arrived. I love The Snowman dearly with all my heart, but The Bear would be my desert island film. It's a showcase for all that was wonderful about British animation - and it's particularly special for me, as a Londoner, to see a film that doesn't try to hide the fact that it's set in the capital city; instead making a feature of it, with an extended, beautifully impressionistic aerial flight around the old smoke. The film is 100% hand drawn; made by human beings and NOT by computers; it was produced entirely in London for 1.3million ($2.1million) making it one of the, most expensive television animations ever produced in the world.

Like The Snowman, the film plays out entirely with no dialogue and no sound effects; Howard Blake's 26 minute, fully orchestral score does it all, and does it so well you feel as if you're watching an animated opera. Words are not necessary; the sumptuous, 100% hand drawn animation and Blake's tenderly lyrical music. A tenor and a bass (both vocalising) give a musical voice to the Polar Bear and the Star Bear respectively, and Tilly's voice (vocalising during the ice dance sequence and singing lyrics written by Blake during the end credits) is provided by now-infamous Charlotte Church. Blake himself conducted the score with orchestra at Whitfield Street studios (now closed) with legendary Mike Ross-Trevor engineering.

Have fun, and Merry Christmas, my friends. :)

Four Christmasses ago, in 2009, our good friend and sadly missed contributor Lens Of Truth posted an MP3 edition of this smashing album. I am shamelessly reposting it in a FLAC upgrade. I absolutely respect Lens' misgivings about posting Naxos, but to be honest I don't have any qualms... this album has been around for ten years, it's probably sold 99.9% of the copies it ever will, and it's arguably of limited interest for 340 odd days out of the year given its Christmas theme... the album is floating around losslessly (though the torrents are currently dead) and on top of that, I know that stuff posted in this thread usually only gets downloaded a hundred times or so... when it's classical music, it's often only two or three dozen. In the great scheme of things, I feel like posting the thing will probably do Naxos more good than harm - and in general I believe that about most albums posted in this thread. That said, if you like it, as with all things I post, go buy it if you can.

As to what this actually is I'll shamelessly quote Lens Of Truth's original notes from his upload... he covers it all with his characteristic pinpoint accuracy and erudition; and I have nothing more to add other than HAPPY CHRISTMAS and enjoy. :)

This is an absolute feast of Christmas-inspired orchestral music; a different recording to the one in the excerpt posted earlier. In addition to the headlining work we have the following:

Bryan Kelly - Improvisations on Christmas Carols
Peter Warlock - Bethlehem Down (arr. Lane)
Philip Lane - Wassail Dances
Patric Standford - A Christmas Carol Symphony

Kelly's 'Improvisations' are particularly stunning, and the string setting of the elegaic 'Bethlehem Down' is another favourite. You'll enjoy spotting all the traditional tunes, and the City of Prague Phil play everything remarkably well. Very lush all round.

You have my sincerest sympathies. I heard that idiot described on the radio a few months ago as the "world's greatest showman" - and I thought to myself "that's as may be, but what a pity he's not the world's greatest violinist..."

Hope you're having a nice Christmas despite Rieu's assault on your senses. :)

The Lawrence Welk of the Baby Boom Generation he is.

Hope you're having a nice Christmas despite Rieu's assault on your senses. :)

The sympathy is appreciated.

Well after very little sleep, about 8 hours of scanning, ripping and uploading and the POWER OF ENERGY DRINKS it gives me pleasure to share my biggest purchase yet =). We've got quite a good roster here with the likes of Akira Senju, Ryosuke Nakanishi, Hayato Matsuo, Yuki Kajiura and much more! I haven't had to time to really listen to any of these yet but from what i remember after watching them i greatly recommend Valvrave, The World God Only Knows Goddesses, Walkure Romanze and Kill la Kill if you are willing to turn your brain off for an hour and indulge the usual over the top and bombastic nature of Hiroyuki's scores :P

Tatsuya has two scores here and to much suprise they are completely free of annoying electronics? Gingitsune has some very nice relaxing strings while Genei wo Kakeru Taiyo has some epic chorus and string tracks. Everything else will depend on your tastes i suppose :<.

Kill me now, please. To keep my mother happy I just had to sit through 2 1/2 excruciating hours of Andr Rieu digging through a dumpster behind Efteling for saccharine & zucker. My ears are still bleeding from that encore of "The Impossible Dream".

gururu i know what you are feeling. I was also TV caught by Andre Rieu in a show called Home for Christmas. My god what a cheesy show of epic proportions. It is staged in such a way that makes it seem that people are paid to be part of the audience just to smile and clapping.
I would rather hear a bunch of beginners playing in an amateur orchestra, than this Rieu guy any day. At least i know that with all their faults they are genuine in what they do.

It wouldn't be so bad if he weren't such a fantastically arrogant bastard as well. Top marks to anybody who can bring classical music to mainstream audiences... but a thousand points off to a pedestrian musician who considers himself the reincarnation of Mozart on the grounds that his lowest-common-denominator shows bring in jaw-dropping audiences. The over-production at every leg is sickening - that woman in the floods of tears as she listened to two mediocre tenors grind through an uninspired arrangement of The Impossible Dream... and carefully choreographed shots of other people simply overcome with emotion at hearing some average music played by average musicians - men and women weeping like children, rising from their chairs and proffering up possessed, fevered applause the like of which Liszt, Paganini, and Rachmaninov might have got on their best ever performance... whilst the orchestra stumble through Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

That swaggering egomaniac standing up on stage, looking down his bulbous hooter at his audience just as a crazed dictator looks down on his oppressed population... lapping up their nauseating sycophancy... sawing through two hours of novelty tunes, then trotting off merrily to an interview where he extols his own musicianship above all others and pushes his freelancing orchestra as the "best in the world"!

They're GOOD... They're actually incredibly good... but I wonder what piffling ensembles like the London Symphony, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw, the Chicago symphony, would respond to an ignorant pop artist shamelessly plugging his own little band as wiping the floor with the lot of them...

*grumbles*

There's gotta be a group therapy forum for people like us: Survivors of Rieu. But, Jupiter's cock! My mother has at least a dozen of his DVDs!

Seriously, though, the magnitude of manufactured merriment in his programs is sooooooo conspicuous it astonishes me that anyone, and I mean anyone, could be sucked in by it. But then there was Liberace. And Lawrence Welk. And… Leni Riefenstahl, of course.

Regardless of Rieu egomania i think that is a good thing, if by chance a dozen or so people from the thousands that goes to his concerts earn some interest to seek out the originals they heard in the concerts and broaden their music horizons.

What a massive Christmas Gift, Leatherhead! Thank you very much!

Wow, Valvrave 2 is so much recycling (from Brotherhood) to even make James Horner embarassed.
I really enjoyed Godesses and Walkure Romanze. A shame that the former has fake brass and the latter has no real players whatsoever. It's good music (especially Walkure Romanze) only brought down by no budget.
But my favorite has to be Non Non Biyori. There's about an hour of absolutly charming and lovely music. It really fits the scenery and serenity of the countryside from the show.

I've listened to about half of them so far. I still have Walkure Romanze, Kill la Kill, and Non Non Biyori left. You can see I'm saving the best for last.

(music relevant to this thread)
Gingitsune/Genei Taiyo: There are a few good tracks on each of these but the majority isn't really doing much for me. The music just isn't that interesting for the most part. I mean it's nice to see Kato stray away from the electronics for once but what's the point if he doesn't do anything with it?

Valvrave: Is it bad that I enjoy this even though Senju is completely on autopilot? Maybe it's because I listened to BlazBlue, Noucome, Gingitsune and Genei Taiyo before getting to this one.

Goddesses: This is my favorite of the ones I've listened to so far. Good music, low budget. After the first two soundtracks for this series, I don't think anyone was expecting him to suddenly get a budget this time. Still, why hire someone like Matsuo and not give him a budget? It never makes sense to me.

Silver Spoon: Here's a nice acoustic soundtrack with some good piano and strings pieces. Makes me hope they release the full soundtrack soon (this is just a "mini soundtrack").

(music not relevant to this thread)
Noucome: Literally (almost) every track is an arrangement of the main theme. By the end you'll be hearing it even when it's not there. If you even make it to the end, that is. Interestingly recorded in Canada with real musicians.

BlazBlue: It doesn't live up to Daisuke Ishiwatari's soundtrack for the games but it's not a bad soundtrack debut for Arte Refact. I just wish they would credit the individual composers within the group so I can know who did the tracks I thought were decent.

Edit: And now I'm done. Walkure Romanze was a pleasant surprise. I didn't know Nakanishi did that style of music. I liked the little musical references too (tr.6 sounds like Bolero, tr.24 like Gymnopedie No.1, etc.). Hopefully he has a larger budget next time he decides to compose in this style.

Kill la Kill is... ugh. It's not as bad as Shingeki but it's not good either. It surely won't be getting any repeat listens from me. I felt the lyrics were more immature than usual too. Maybe Sawano has lost it for good. Or maybe he'll make a surprise comeback when Gundam Unicorn's fourth soundtrack comes out next year. We'll know soon enough.

Non Non Biyori is sweet and relaxing. Mizutani has only done a few soundtracks by himself so far but after listening to Kaminai and Non Non Biyori, I can say he's off to a good start. "Sunny Road" is a lovely theme.

Arpeggio's orchestral tracks are short but interesting. The fake brass is a shame but it doesn't stop me from liking what I hear. At least the chorus is real. There were only a few on this first soundtrack but hopefully there's more on the next two.

Now heres some reviews.

Noucome is pretty bad i have no idea why i got it o_O. I remember there being a lot of good stuff when i was watching it but the thought just came to me that there is a LOT of copyrighted music in the show (stuff from Beethoven and Mozart i think) so yeah the original stuff is just plain bad. Stay away from it.......

Valvrave: Yeah there are some blatant recycles of his work from the first ost and Brotherhood (i think track 17 or 18 is almost an exact copy of Knives and shadows from the brotherhood ost) but i still find myself enjoying it for the most part. It's weird i think i just have a crush on Senju's orchestral style. I like Takanashi's stuff for the same reason. Even if the composer hardly changes anything with each of the new osts they come out with if you end up falling in love with the way they present their music it's hard to care sometimes.

Silver Spoon: A shame the ost is so short because it's really quite good. Nothing extravagant or outstanding but that's what i like about it. It's very down to earth and soothing. Nice combination of pianos and strings.

Walkure Romance: Has that grand regal feel too it. The thing that i've appreciated about Ryosuke Nakanishi is that he could totally get away with doing cheap generic crap for the shows he composes for (usually fanservice or comedy orientated). But he always manages to deliver an enjoyable score and doing what he can with the small budgets he given.

Genei wo Kakeru Taiyo: Yep most of it is filler trash. But as always with enclosure CDs that's to be expected. There is some good ambiance here and there and a great horror track but everything is rather forgettable. There are only a few battle tracks sadly because they easily outshine everything in the OST combined. I'm sure the next CD will be much better though.

Will listen to everything else later. Still tired........

Many thanks from me as well, Leatherhead - my thoughts are largely the same as those of the esteemed gentleman above me.

The sad thing about Tatsuya Kato is... he's no bloody good. We've heard a lot of electronic scores that are no bloody good, and now we can hear an acoustic score that's also no bloody good. Choice of instrumentation is interesting, but compositional faculty (specifically, lack thereof) remains constant. A terrific shame since the guy seems to be scoring twenty shows a season lately.

Goddesses... this is Hayato Matsuo, for Christ's sake. Clearly it's doing very well, with this being the third series not to mention a bunch of OVA's being released too... Could they possible not stretch to giving some semblance of a budget to the guy? (They found a budget for Sahashi for the third series of Saint Seiya after scoring the previous two with fake brass and strings - it does happen occasionally.) I mean, really... Hire Renzo Piano to design your house, and tell him he's got to build it out of polystyrene blocks, toilet paper tubes, and Pritt stick... Honestly... :(

Silver Spoon: Nice. Not much more to be said. Nice. Inoffensive and pleasant.

Walkure Romance: Excellent use of insanely limited budget. The use of one real trumpet and one real trombone to carry the melodies whilst giving the harmony to synth is a really, really good idea if you absolutely can't afford a full brass section. Of the recent batch of "This should've been orchestral but we couldn't afford it" scores this may be the one which hides its shoestring budget the best. Personally, if I'd been making the decisions I would've saved money elsewhere - take the strings down to bare bones (say, 5 firsts, 4 seconds, 3 violas, 2 celli, 1 bass), get a proper brass section, and maybe one each of flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. I've never understood why that's not done more often. A small orchestra can sound bigger with creative orchestration and if the music is big... Look at what Hirano managed on Driland; four woodwind, eight brass, eighteen strings, piano, fake harp, and fake percussion. Or Oshima's 36 piece orchestra on Fuse.

Less players will always sound better than fake players. If you were really strapped, you could go down as low as five strings (three violins, viola, cello), four woodwind (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon), seven brass (two trumpets, two trombones, two horns, one tuba), piano, and fake percussion. Just fifteen people to pay, and 90% of the pallette afforded to you with a big orchestra. OK, so you won't be doing any complicated divisi string work, but you've got most of the sounds of the orchestra and best of all all of your melodic instruments are real people. Write with your limited ensemble in mind. Piano can replace basses, woodwinds can thicken up the strings, strings can double stop, etc, etc... I'd rather do that any day of the week ahead of dubbing some pissy-sounding obviously fake horns or whatever over the few real players I had.

I'm told the 80s were truely salad years. A sort of dot-com bubble in anime. For the 1983 Crusher Joe film (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/big-orchestral-action-music-thread-57893/225.html#post2259692), not only did they record a symphonic suite first, they also used another big orchestra for the actual score. Totally unnecessary! I guess they were more careful with their money when in 1989 a two episode direct-to-video was produced.

It's bound to disappoint for being in the shadow of Norio Maeda's film score, but I still like it. A glorious theme referenced often! Nasty action tracks! Though, there's a little padding by slowing them down (11, 19). Unfortunately, no orchestral end title. It just ends (if you don't like the song).

There's a new blog entry on Michiru Oshima's site which I don't like one bit. Would a Japanese speaker please cast an eye?

???????3-???????????? : ??????? ??????????? (http://michiru-oshima.net/?p=853&cat=5&oya=)

The Google translation suggests that there is some penny-pinching going on in her upcoming Buddha score... but I hope it's a mistranslation...

Akashi San
12-31-2013, 12:21 AM
Probably not a mistranslation; she said there are many non-orchestral pieces (violin solo, vocal, percussion ensemble, and "various instruments"). And "of course", some synth.

nextday

Which doesn't really mean anything at all. Even Patema has some synth tracks.

Edit: Thanks for the Keiichi Oku. Love this guy's themes.

tangotreats
12-31-2013, 12:42 AM
That doesn't scare me so much... the translation suggested that it was all synth. There isn't a Japanese score in history that doesn't have some cheap crap interspersed with the good stuff. I can handle it if that's what's going on... if, on the other hand, Michiru Oshima on a prestige theatrical motion picture... is doing a synth score... then I think we're all doomed.

I could have missed this conversation - any news on interesting composition/series for this anime season?

On a sidenote, I tried out Pandora and Spotify for the first time today. Looks like I found what I need to cut down a lot of my classical music spending. Too bad 99.999% of Japanese soundtracks are missing. And when I make an Oshima station on Pandora, I get Yuki Kajiura...

It's looking awfully drab, sadly. Takaki on a new Precure series... Captain Earth (a new mecha show) should be interesting, with the same team from Star Driver working on the music. The samples so far seem very Star Driver-esque.

Apart form that, a succession of nobodies, idiots, or decent composers working on crap shows which won't have any kind of budget for a good score.

Away from anime, Yugo Kanno's Gunshi Kanbee should be worth a listen.

Least interesting January season for quite a few years, sadly. Notable absences; Watanabe, Yamashita, Oshima, Sahashi, Hirano, Kano, Sato.

LeatherHead333

I think you guys should try out the Zetsumetsu Kigu Shoujo Amazing Twins OVA. Has pretty music so far.

Other than that the only other score i'm REALLY looking forward to is Taku Iwasaki's score on Noragami. Of course double Takanashi this season isn't bad either :P.

Takaki is confirmed for the new Precure? Hopefully this doesn't go on for too long. Takanashi has been stuck doing Precure for five years now. Also, Captain Earth isn't until April.

But yeah, basically not much going on next season. Only like two orchestral scores and not really anything worth getting excited about...

Tatsuya Kato is scoring the mecha Buddy Complex (sample (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=t_Y5PEEmwQw#t=102)) - skip to 1:42 if it doesn't
Masaru Yokoyama is scoring another mecha, Nobunaga the Fool (sample (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=i1jXxiLDn1k#t=142)) - skip to 2:22 if it doesn't

On the movie side there's Giovanni no Shima. The main composer is unknown but Masashi Sada composed the theme and Toshiyuki Watanabe arranged it. (sample) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUov7pVs46M)

Some other ones that could be interesting
Takeshi Senoo is doing the soundtrack for Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha and it should be good since I've liked his past works (Aria & Himawari).
Taku Iwasaki is scoring Noragami, an action show by Bones, but the PVs have only have electronics.
Masato Kouda is doing the music for the magical action anime Magical Warfare.
Makoto Yoshimori is doing Durarara-like music for Hamatora.
Kow Otani is doing the music for the fantasy/romance series Toaru Hikuushi e no Koiuta.
Space Dandy's soundtrack has contributions from a large number of artists including Yoko Kanno.
The new Sailor Moon anime is probably getting delayed (again) but it's worth noting that Toshihiko Sahashi did the music for the recent Sailor Moon stage play.

Definitely pay attention to the drama Gunshi Kanbee which has classical-styled music by Yugo Kanno performed by a big orchestra. Guaranteed to be great.

Akashi San
12-31-2013, 02:10 AM
Watanabe is a composer I always look forward to hearing. I hadn't known much about him until Space Brothers, but he is so consistently good. Good time to listen to the Symphonic Sailor Moon!

Just realized you wrote Sahashi, not Watanabe... Oh well, I hope he pulls something good and not do another one of those shitty drama soundtracks.

It isn't known if he's composing the new anime (nothing is known about it). I'm just noting that he did the recent stage play and so it's very possible that he may also be doing the music for the anime. I have this feeling that if he does do it, it won't be anything good...

tangotreats
12-31-2013, 03:38 AM
I get the feeling that Sahashi is consciously winding down, now. He frequently jokes about being "too old" on his blog - despite being only 54... As far as output goes, he's not doing a quarter as much as he used to and what he does is often highly variable. His recent Sentai score is a mixture of completely terrible and straight recycling. His last handful of drama scores have been cheap and awful. Saint Seiya Omega was cheap and awful, slightly less so in the last season, but compared to the likes of Gundam Seed, Simoun? Doesn't even register. 2011's Sacred Seven had its moments. 2009 was a golden year, with Element Hunters AND Gundam Symphony - but 2009 was five years ago.

He's bored and worn out. It shows in his recent outings.

UPDATE - RUMOUR TIME: 2014's Super Sentai series (Tokkyuger) reunites the creative team from 2009's Shinkenger. This means there is a pretty good chance Hiroshi Takaki will score it. We'll find out in a few weeks. Takaki on 2014 Super Sentai. Calling it. Now, let's wait and see how colossally WRONG I turn out to be....

I know I mentioned this before, and yes it is a little off topic, but I now have actual plans and tickets to spend three days in Tokyo, though I will be spending much more time in the Philippines, the main reason for the trip. To avoid going very off topic I would request some personal messages from anyone who has some practical tips for getting around Tokyo as a foreigner with some but not a lot of Japanese knowledge and things I should absolutely not miss while I'm there. Spending a lot of time searching for CDs in the stores is not a priority for me but rather enjoying the city and what it has to offer.

Funk, blues, rock & roll with interspersed orchestral tracks. This might not be for everyone, but I think this is really well done and just pure FUN. There is a great blues/jazz theme in the second half of Track 13 that I wish Sahashi would have expounded further. There are other short bluesy piano stubs that I am pretty fond of. I was not impressed. I like Odin Sphere and even Deltora Quest but Dragon's Crown was just boring.

On a side note, I was also quite glad to see that Majestic Prince soundtrack is not insanely loud in the mastering like a lot of Anime scores. I happened to listen to it side by side with Nichijou and found myself turning up the volume a lot once I switched to Majestic Prince. Far too many Japanese scores are mastered really loud lately.

I recently asked for information about an unknown track. I've finally found it. It's track 7 from this soundtrack. I'm glad I found the part at 3:20, but the whole piece could be played in the concert hall, I think. Unfortunately, that is the only big orchestral cue.

Happy New Year, ladies and gentlemen!

Anybody got a headache? Want a big, thumping humdinger? I got just the album for you!

A Herr Salat / Tangotreats Co-Production

JAPANESE COMPOSERS
Three Percussion Pieces by
Hinoharu Matsumoto, Minoru Kobashi, and Yoshihiro Kanno

My transfer from Herr Salat's vinyl. FLAC at Level 8. Full scans (booklet, covers, and vinyl) included.

You know when you've got some horrible illness and you're trying to sleep but you just can't? You lie there tossing and turning and coughing and sneezing and sweating. When you do eventually get to sleep, you wake up thirty seconds later, and despite the fact that you're freezing cold and convulsing with shivers, your bed covers are soaked through with sweat. During your brief moments of rest, your dreams take on nightmarish qualities; repetitious, nonsensical, fevered visions of pure unadulterated hell. You hold your head in your hands and pray to every God you can think of to make it stop.

Well, this album is something akin to a musical expression of these experiences. Every now and again, we take a flutter at something we're not familiar with, and sometimes we are rewarded with something truly wonderful. Sometimes, it doesn't quite work out like that. My thoughts on this "music" shouldn't detract one bit from my customary gratitude to Herr Salat, for his kindness and generosity. I wonder how many people truly appreciate the lengths he goes to in order to contribute to this thread, this forum, and the music community at large. P'raps he might - or somebody else here might - find something wonderful in this album. Nothing would give me greater pleasure.

What we have here is three pieces from the late 1970s, early 1980s, by three composers - the third piece by none other than Yoshihiro Kanno. I'm not quite sure what to say about them, apart from that; they're modernist avant-garde music of the most uncompromising kind. Fascinating in a morbid way to hear the sounds and effects that can be coaxed from a small ensemble of commonplace instruments... If nothing else, they're masterclasses in arrangement technique - particularly Kanno's piece.

Thank you again, Mr Salat. Sorry it took me so long to get to this one. I really hope you get some pleasure from it. :)

Been listening to all the new shows music so far this season but the only one that's note worthy so far is Kow Otani's score for Toaru Hikuushi e no Koiuta.
Only show that has shown that it has SOME kind of budget sporting some enjoyable string arrangements. I suggest checking it out =).

Yeah... You know it's a rough season when the Ko Otani score is the standout... although having said that, it IS actually very good. I'm surprised. I skated through the episode not knowing who the composer was, thinking "Mmm! This isn't bad!" and then I found out who it was.

Tatsuya Kato is up to his usual tricks in Buddy Complex - he gets a budget but still has no idea what to do with an orchestra. Masaru Yokoyama also has an orchestra in Nobunaga, but subjects it to typical abuse.

Oh, well... here's to the April season...

Perhaps we can add flying islands to the list of things you need to have for an Otani score to be memorable. Let's hope that some Giants appear later.
True, things don't look so good right now but not everything has aired yet so there's still a chance for a pleasant surprise. At least we'll still have the leftovers from Amano's Warsaw Recording Session.

Many thanks to Herr Salat and Tango for the recent uploads. Enjoying them alot.
Yes, sad news about Toshihiko Sahashi, I think that although not the best orchestral composer around he has a real talent for composing pure unadulterated fun. And his mature orchestral scores have proven that he is worthy of being alongside Oshima, Yamashita, Hirano and Hisaishi as a great japanese composer. However he has sure fallen from grace during the last couple of years. Even more disappointing when you consider the recent outburst of Hisaishi and Oshima and the promising signs of 2009. I will be saddened when a composer like him goes out not with a bang but a whimper.
And thanks for the FLAC upgrade for Cyber Formula SIN. His whole score for the Cyber Formula Saga is an all-time favorite of mine. Perhaps the most fun I've had with a Sahashi score aside from Gingaman.

A bit late but Happy New Year everyone!

Wow, I get more and more excited about the music of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. the more I hear it! This video is of the orchestra playing Bear McCreary's composition entitled "The Magical Place". I can't really spoil the story if any of you plan on watching the show, but it is very emotional! The swells in the brass are simply astounding. Such warmth! Anyway, I hope you all enjoy!

I don't know about any noteworthy anime music this season because I haven't watched anything yet but Yugo Kanno's Gunshi Kanbee sounds really nice and has a wonderful main theme. The first soundtrack will be released at the end of the month - look forward to it.

I saw Mina Kubota is scoring a drama this season (first in 3 years). Will have to check that one out too.

Edit: I really like Otani's music for Koiuta. Surprise of the season. Space Dandy's jazz funk soundtrack was pretty cool too.

By the way, this mecha anime for next season sounds promising. Don't know who the composer is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQy_9c1yE_I

I actually managed to skim through almost every series that has premiered so far. Nothing noteworthy to report from me either, except that I liked the piano tune from Noragami. Then again, I have been back on my piano addiction after all these years.

And I hope Sahashi can produce another Simoun in the near future. That damn soundtrack is so good. Had everything from Mozart to Piazzolla and was just really well done thematically.

Jeremy Soule teams up with the lead designer from former Cavedog fame to produce a live orchestral score for the game Consortium. You can find the game rip here which is done by Panopticon:

http://forums.ffshrine.org/f72/consortium-jeremy-soule-%5Bgamerip%5D-166866/#post2564608

As for the score, I like the sweeping themes that Soule creates. This harkens back to his older works like Total Annihilation and Azurik. The main themes in the rip sound an awful lot like Amen the Awakening though, but that makes sense given the fact that Amen was never released.

Edit: The rip includes the track formerly titled "Waterfall" and that confirms that he did use what he had recorded for Amen.

First upload of the new year though sadly it's not to strong. Hikaru delivers a decent album for beyond the boundary with some pretty good strings and a couple solo viola tracks. Kill la Kill is just a remix of vocal songs so if you didn't like them in the original album nothing will probably change for you now.

A lot of these tracks I remember from his mp3.com page back in 1999-2000. Zenlil Defense Minigame and Final Showdown were definitely not written for this game, just like the Amen tracks.
