A score of truly epic sweep here for an anime painted on a similarly broad canvas. The main theme is classic Hisashi - soaring and wistful - heard most gorgeously singing over a bed of churning strings. Each track is like a little suite of contrasted sections, with many different kinds of music, but all united into a smooth whole [How does JH do this? It's all so accomplished, with lyricism and crucial telling details in the orchestration, yet it sounds so simple!]. I think you'll find this one grows with repeated listening. Also recommend the movie very strongly. Some beautiful art and character design and a story filled with incident, based on classical mythology, with plenty of those quasi-avant garde touches that make the best anime so strange and so special.

Thanks to the original uploader! A higher quality scan of the cover, with the obi though (), was included in the archive I downloaded. Brian Tyler to Score ?Thor: The Dark World? | Film Music Reporter (http://filmmusicreporter.com/2013/06/18/brian-tyler-to-score-thor-the-dark-world/)

This is the best update I imagine we could expect. Tyler did an awesome job with Iron Man 3, and represents the best fusion of classical orchestra and modern music. If The Dark World achieves the same scale of quality as Iron Man 3, then we might expect the Marvel films to have a decent progression in musical quality after The Incredible Hulk and Captain America.

Hi, I'm just reposting some of my posts from the "Lossless Video Game Soundrtack Thread v2" for the classical listener. For file extraction, I would recommend using 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/).

Destiny: Dreamer's ALLIANCE
Again not my rip, but something which should be in every fan's collection.

EBCD-0001 | PRESS START The 5th Anniversary (Re-Up)
Not my rip, but then again, like what I said on the Destiny: Dreamer's ALLIANCE, this album too should be in every fan's collection, right next to every orchestrally arrange album and live video game orchestra concert.
No scans, but it has a log and two cue files, but don't use either one of the cue files, as the files will not be seperate once if you use or the other and it will be fine once you view them on a file viewing program like Foobar2000.

My comment on the Game Music Concert Series:

These albums are not the first to actually tackle the job of translating video game chiptones to orchestra; Falcom did it first with the Symphony Ys & Sorcerian albums, and the Falcom Special Box '89: Orchestra Version Mini Disc, with all three said albums performed by the King Symphonic Orchestra, but that was with one single composer-conglomerate group for a company and one orchestra; here there are are mutilple Composers from different game companies participating for concerts and various different orchestras performing the arranged works, with the first album being a recording from the first live concert of it's type. I enjoyed all these albums and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Interesting. I am not familiar with Press Start 5th Anniversary. Should be worth checking out. As for Destiny Dreamer's Alliance, I was hugely disappointed. I am a huge fan of Hitoshi Sakimoto's work but I didn't find it particularly engaging at all. I would have enjoyed it more if it was a full orchestra (as many of Hitoshi Sakimoto's scores really do need to be recorded with full orchestra at some point).

In other news, NO CUSTOMS CHARGE on my latest CDJapan order, which I am now holding excitedly in my greasy mitts. What could they possibly be?

Well, one of them is a certain hotly anticipated Hirano score... FANTASTIC MUSIC, disturbingly well-recorded, but too sodding short... A few highlights to whet your appetite for the main upload-fest this evening... Ladies and gentlemen, TANKEN DRILAND! That real musicians made it into this idiotic show at all is a miracle... that there's a full orchestra and chorus is a miracle... that Hirano scored it is a miracle... that he scored it in this style is a miracle. That he got away with scoring an astoundingly dumb kiddy anime made for no reason other than to sell crappy over-priced trading cards in this style AND managed to get a soundtrack release... is the miracle of all miracles. Yes, the cues are short... and yes, the orchestra session was not particularly long (15-20 minutes?) but there is so much greatness here, even packed into 65 second cues...

Probably the highlights, ironically, would be some of the more intimate chamber pieces... Hirano channels (well, OK, rips off... but gorgeously) Ravel in "In A Dream" with a delicious Nocturne for strings, sax, and piano... Yep, it's a thinly cloaked abbreviation of Ravel's Piano Concerto In G... but it's so beautiful... and remember the trashy TV show this music is playing in...

"Warmth" is a beautifully warm rendition of the main theme for Piano, cello, and violin. This guy does more with three instruments than most other composers can do with 100.

Additionally, we have a two-disc brand new anime score (this year)... the show is UTTERLY TERRIBLE BEYOND ALL HOPE OF REDEMPTION. Complete and utter cock from start to finish. Would you know it from the score? I doubt it... No clues at all for this one... Just have a listen... ;)

Should I now be concerned that the Japanese film The Silver Season, otherwise known as The Season on Snow scored by Naoki Sato might not be a good film after all? Black Lagoon turned out to be my top favourite anime next to Evangelion, Jin-Roh has become one of me favourite action/thriller films. I sure wish bloody Netflix had a better international section. Not paying $50 for the BLuRay from CDJapan on a whim, that's for damn sure.

Not My Rip

Martha Argerich

http://boxset.ru/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/argerich_abbado_prokofiev_ravel_piano_concertos.jp g

Coincidentally, I was listening to this disc for good four hours yesterday, re-discovering each work each time I looped the disc. In short, absolutely exhilarating performance of both concertos. Piano Concerto in G is a jazzy departure from other Ravel pieces - it was composed after Ravel's American tour during which Ravel met Gershwin! Ravel's solo piano work Gaspard de la nuit is included as a bonus (the real highlight here IMO). Argerich's reading of Ondine is just amazing. It feels like real "water music" and the climactic cascade is so magical (maybe a tad bit fast) that I probably have listened to this at least 20 times before moving onto Le Gibet. It's too bad she hasn't recorded Ravel's entire piano oeuvre (unsubtle fanboy-ism, yes). :(

The recording is from 1965 but fear not, it is remastered extremely well by DG. This should be a real treat for those who are at least a bit interested in classical music.

As a side note, I had to postpone my purchase of Tanken Driland because of a recent audio gear upgrade and other film music discs I bought. Will be looking forward to your generous upload, tango. :D

I always get the vibe that Iwashiro doesn't know how to come up with a melody. Some tracks are okay, but I'm left very underwhelmed by this score (and almost every other Iwashiro work). Even the okay tracks sound pretty mono-rhythmic and predictable. And why does the Tokyo Philharmonic sound so claustrophobic here?... Sorry about the negativity - I'm still thankful for the upload, of course.

On the plus side, that looks like a fun tracklist to translate. :D

*sigh*

What a waste of an expensive orchestral session... Much gratitude for the upload, of course, but this is just about as terrible as I could've ever expected, even with awareness of what sort of composer Iwashiro actually is (a crappy one)... themeless, monotonous, badly orchestrated, poorly recorded.

Imagine if they'd taken this budget and this series and given it to Yamashita, Oshima, Sahashi, Hirano, or Souhei Kano... we could've ended up with the score of the decade... and instead we have another bass-heavy, melody-light, percussion-intrusive, Iwashiro dirge that sounds like it was recorded inside a Coke can.

Seriously... why would you give a project with this sort of money available to Iwashiro? A man who has almost no idea how to handle an orchestra or write a melody? The mind boggles...

https://mega.co.nz/#!GAoD1I7C!Q5LYNQ15BE1rVqYRSeHrejxKRlAWDULZY3ZIeEa _JFE

The last time that Doctor Who music was performed for the proms was 2010 - and I have no idea why, because watching this was a hell lot of fun. The program intermixed completly orchestral suite arrangements of themes from the third, fourth and fifth seasons with classical pieces. I cut out the classical pieces from this rip.

We start off with "The Mad Man With a Box", which I think is the Doctor's theme for the fifth season. That is followed by another fifth season cue, "Down to Earth" and "I Am the Doctor". Then we get a litte something called "Symphony of the Daleks", which is honestly just a suite of "Victory of the Daleks" and "Battle in the Sky". BUT Victory of the Daleks gets a nice chorus to accompany it, and it makes one wonder why Gold didn't put that in the original piece because it works so damn well here.

The next two pieces, "The Theme of Amy Pond" and "Liz, Lizards, Vampires and Vincent" are the last season five cues. I know for a fact that "Liz" is a suite made up partially out of "The Vampires of Venice", but I am not sure about "Amy Pond".

"The Regeneration of the Doctor" is essentially made up of two pieces, from two different seasons. The first half if "Galofrey - Our Childhood, Our Home" while the second is Vale Decim from the Season 4 specials. (Does that count as being part of season 2? I don't know. Brit television is damn complicated.) The show concludes with "The Pandoric Suite" and "Epilogue: The Theme of Doctor Who."

At the end of the day, this is a nice summation of Doctor Who season 5, with some nods to 3 and 4 when appropriate. If you have never heard of Doctor Who this is a good opportunity for you to get acquainted.

In the old tradition of King Arthierr (just as tangotreats and Doublehex just recently did), guess what this is from. Or rather who the composer is (not sure if his style is particularly recognizable or not). Japanese score from 1990. The music is like this, "worse" than Sentai scores with even 6 or 7 cues in one. And it only has 4 tracks total...Lalala, Driland (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/big-orchestral-action-music-thread-57893/501.html#post2382208) for the win! :'D

KOICHIRO KAMEYAMA
Beast Saga (Volumes 1 and 2)
Studio Orchestra
conductor uncredited

Both CDs in one pack, with booklet scans and LOGs. My rip at FLAC Level 8. Track titles in Romaji.

https://mega.co.nz/#!EwInBDwB!IJbZaE28dA2xhiTLvL42URKBMmcoIkHhpHB92r9 DKMQ

Here's surprise score of 2013, without a doubt. Let me introduce Beast Saga; it's one of those runaway Japanese franchises that starts off as something relatively innocuous and ends up becoming lunchboxes, comics, TV shows, games, trading cards, comics, concerts, restaurants, statues, plastic toys, and Christ-knows what else. On a distant planet called "Beast" (wow, imaginative) common animals have undergone a miraculous evolutionary change - ie, now they can talk. They have divided into three tribes of beasts - the Sea Tribe, the Land Tribe, and the Sky Tribe. They busy themselves by stuffing their faces full of food, and chattering mindlessly about how great their kingdoms are... and when they're bored with that, they beat the living daylights out of their rival tribes whilst prancing around theatrically showing off their ludicrously colourful merchandising armour. Still with me?

So, even by Japanese cash-cow franchise standards, this thing is pretty terrible.

For reasons I will never understand, somebody had the bright idea of giving this distinctly dodgy show a completely serious orchestral score, just like they've been known to do every now and again in Japan... and what a surprisingly good score it is! Kameyama hadn't been on my radar before... but he certainly is, now. Blessed with a surprisingly well-stocked orchestra, if a little thin on the woodwind front (four trumpets, four horns, four trombones, flute, oboe, and a full string compliment - the ever reliable Masatsugu Shinozaki group) he ends up turning in a very tuneful, melodic, brassy-as-hell adventure score. It has something of a 1960s vibe at times, with some very Batman-esque "ZAP! POW! SPLAT!" style brass slides... and a very good number of straight orchestral cues amongst them. There is also a very good indeed fake chorus in a handful of cues which is ridiculously well done, particularly for a Japanese TV score.

Additionally, as a point of interest, the percussion instruments are all fake as well. Not that I'm thrilled about hybrid scores, but lesson one of saving money is that if you absolutely have to the percussion players should be the first to go - piano, cymbals, snares, timpani, bass drum, etc - and also the harpist can go as well. Sorry, Tomoyuki Asakawa. If it comes down to chosing between somebody to play the cymbals and somebody to play the flute, or throwing away the timpani for another trumpet, etc... bring on the samples. Percussion instruments are easy to sample and they sound just fine. Well mixed and matched with the hall acoustic they blend in excellently; basically, you can't tell - and if you can tell, it's not distracting. This score, and Driland, are both prime examples of what can be done with not-very-much money if you prioritise.

A note about track translations; I did made a number of abortive attempts and decided to give up when I realised I'd actually have to watch this dreadful show to make sense of it all. It's ludicrous. Getting the translation right requires knowing what these crazy animal bastards are all called... as well as decoding all the English -> Katakana -> English (MEIN TEEMU FURU ORUKAESUTURARU!!!! MADU FAITO BEASTURU DESUISIVURU BATTORU!!!!, etc) crap - and frankly, life's too short. If somebody wants to try, they're more than welcome... but it's not a game for me. Romaji transliteration shamelessly stolen off CDjapan's page.

YOSHIHISA HIRANO
Tanken Driland - 1000-nen no Mahou
Studio Orchestra
conducted by Yoshihisa Hirano

My rip at FLAC Level 8. Booklet scans and LOG included. Track titles in English - my translation.

Not much to say, here... It's Hirano, it's GREAT, GET IT NOW.

FANTASTIC MUSIC, disturbingly well-recorded, but too sodding short...

Enjoy!

I'm listening to Tanken Driland right now and it's superb. EVEN with the tracks being as short as they are, this has to be one of Hirano's best yet... and to think it's for some silly kids anime that almost no one watched! It seriously makes me wonder why Hirano didn't do something like this for Hunter x Hunter, which is undoubtedly the biggest anime he's worked on to date aside from Death Note.

Thanks for sharing, tango.

Tango show him how it's done, you're still working at music composition correct?

That track listing pretty much sums up Sawano for me: A bunch of flashy bullshit that doesn't mean anything; not able or willing to eloquently convey an idea so relies on noise and "quirk" to distract. It's all about the brand, and the style... but underneath it there is no substance.

This is coming from somebody who generally despises Sawano but is enjoying this score in a very basic, brain-switched-off, big-dumb-noisy-fun-stupid kinda way... :)

Gah as tempted as i am to let my ears gasm from the Sawano goodness i think I'll wait till i get my copy first. Not surprisingly this particular album is on the top 5 most popular albums this week (at least on cdjapan). Considering most animation soundtracks don't even get close to that point i'd say that says quite a bit ;).

First of all thanks for all these new scores. I'm interested in checking out Attack on Titan and Tango's two shares.

I really am not sure exactly what the complaints are about Gargantia. I thought it was pretty solid even though it is lacking in a core theme to bring it together. A good solid action score with some nice emotional cues. Similarly, I actually like Djawadi's score to Pacific Rim. It manages to sound balanced for once and really delivers a solid sound. I hope that it signals a change in style for big composers overall.

Not to sound ungrateful, I just hate it when people trim scores before posting them in any other form elsewhere under the reassurance that they know better. Endless thanks for posting the album, but could we please listen to the material ourselves and make our own decisions of what to cut?

Doublehex,

I thought your review accurate and I completely agree with you. As for my own opinion, Djawadi is certainly improving and is starting to stick out from all the others at Zimmer's studio. He can actually write for real instruments and he doesn't seem to be afraid to do it either. Plus his melodies are more memorable than anything Hans comes up with. I never tire of hearing the Main Theme to Game of Thrones. As for Pacific Rim, I love the composition "Cancelling the Apocalypse". It so reminded me of Chris Lennertz, but that is a good thing! Speaking of Lennertz, I really hope one of these days he scores an action film or maybe even a war movie. I find his talent wasted on comedies just like John Powell.

Well i'm officially pissed now. I was hella excited to see that we were going to get more of Takanashi's work in a new show called Fantasista Doll. Then i go to find out that the series decided to go the Deadman Wonderland and Freezing route by only releasing a few tracks within 6 Blueray/DVD enclosures........honestly this the worst route a publisher can take for anime soundtrack lovers, because you are basically paying around 80-90 bucks JUST for like 8 tracks.

Even though Takanashi is my favorite composer this is one of those kind things i refuse to support because i don't approve of this crap (I know it's not his fault). This is the first time this has happened for his music which is indeed a shame. TOHO animation is already looking like a crappy publisher to me =(.

Hahahaha! You've got NOTHING to apologise for, sir!

Many, many, many thanks for all of these... even if I can't muster up much enthusiasm for the music, I'm endlessly grateful for your generosity and effort... :)

One small point, however... you keep advertising your uploads as FLAC when in fact they are Apple Lossless. Of course, one can convert to whatever one wishes, but all that aside, wrong is wrong... ;)

Thanks for the mega post.

I'm listening to Photokano right now and it's very soothing and light-hearted. The tracks are a bit short but it's one of the better soundtracks from this past season. I hope Mina Kubota's next work will be for something actually worth watching past episode 1.

@LeatherHead333
Huge thanks for all the uploads. Now that I've finally had enough time to catch up with all the stuff posted in the last weeks here are my two cents:

Beast Saga: Great Score, definetly worth a purchase.

Tanken Driland: Absolutly fantastic, Hirano does it again.

Galileo X Midsummer Formula: Lovely with the typical Kanno filler.

Vividred Operation: Some "very" enjoyable tracks (4, 13, 15 and especially 18). The rest is okay but the second ost is even longer so perhaps we'll get more of the good stuff.

Date A Live: Very Good, one of the better scores of 2013 and there is even a third ost coming.

Gargantia: Some tracks are enjoyable but I would not listen to it again. Rather forgettable.

Photokano: Nice and enjoyable. Perfect for a relaxing afternoon.

Leviathan: So I gave this one a go and it's better than expected. It has some nice string pieces and the synth tracks are enjoyable.

HATARAKU MAOUSAMA!: I like track 22 from the second disc, the rest is not for me.

Attack on Titan: I don't like it.

Arata Kangatari: I don't care for Otani unless Giants and or Angels are involved.

Pacific Rim: Terrible but at least it has motifs.

I'm now waiting for Yamato 2199 and Final Fantasy: The Celebration (is it actually worth buying, I already have Returning Home so I'm still unsure...). Also, since Watanabe's Majestic Prince has still no release date what about his more lyrical score: Daini Gakusho (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=AVCL-25784). If no one has it yet I will consider buying it.

Keisuke Shinohara was a talented composer with only a few soundtracks to his name and only a couple that have surfaced online. An interesting thing about this one is that renowned pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy served as musical adviser in addition to playing the piano pieces for it. The main theme is quite beautiful and one of the best solo piano pieces I've heard on an anime soundtrack. There's also a few classical piano pieces on here, as you may have noticed from the tracklist, though only one is arranged.

I couldn't even get through Pacific Rim. Same old story. Composer who's renowned for 100% shit writing for movies which usually have 100% shit scores... writes score that is only 99% shit, is hailed as second coming of Jesus.

It's a shit RC score. Frankly there's more to enjoy in Attack On Titan...

Doublehex

...Hailed as the second coming? By whom? I hear praise that guys so far as "The score is good - mindless, but fun", which is my assessment as well!

I would definitely not call it another shit RC score. I mean, the rock guitars actually compliments the orchestra for one, and we don't get any cliche RC style synth. It certainly has faults in the use of themes (as in there are none), but I said all that in my review. No point in retreading old territory.

Vinphonic
07-04-2013, 08:57 PM
Pacific Rim is full on RC style. There is not a single track without excessive and unnecessary percussion and the use of rock in orchestral scores is so overdone that it should not be something to note anymore. From Goldenthal to Goldsmith and from Hirano to Takanashi, many composers have used rock instruments with an orchestra to great effect, some with classical education, some with pure musical talent and a good sense of melody and harmony, all things Djawadi does not have. Pacific Rim is passable rock at best and I'm still baffled why Del Toro has not hired a japanese composer for the film. Still, it is one of the better RC scores but that does not make it suck less.

RIP Mr Shinohara... This is a wonderful score, though... Thank you. :)

---

News time... I'm tentatively optimistic about the upcoming Ultraman Ginga score - the first Ultraman TV series since 2008. There appears to be an orchestra; and Fumio Hara is credited on the Japanese Wikipedia page as "Orchestral Arranger" - so we might just be in for something good. There is a four minute mega-trailer out now (galaxy promo - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-N2oQk86IFg#at=176)) ahead of the first episode which airs next week, which has a few fragments of music...

Not sure what to expect... bear in mind that Ultraman hasn't had a substantial ensemble of live musicians for five years now - and that includes the theatrical scores. Funny how Ultraman's music went cheap and synthy at the same time as Super Sentai gave us scores from Hiroshi Takaki, Kousuke Yamashita, Megumi Ohashi, and Toshihiko Sahashi... It seems to have all gone to hell when Tsubaraya got bought out. Sahashi did a great fully symphonic score for the 2008 feature... and then it all stopped, just like that.

Here's hoping they've come to their senses for the new TV series, and we can look forward to some robust orchestral superhero scoring again...

My first reaction was "one of the Beethoven symphonies" followed by "...argh, which one?"

After some skipping around, I found it. Third symphony, second movement. A version on youtube, for reference: Beethoven, Symphony 3/2/1 - Marcia Funebre (E flat major Op. 55) "Eroica" - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-Jk6rOvW5c) Around 11:20 in to that.

Here it is. The to my knowledge only completely orchestral Sawano score so far. No electronica or e-guitars and most importantly no terribly pronounced German singing!!
It's a bit on the eccentric side at times but it's surprisingly subtle.
This may prove that he has a couple more tricks up his sleeve than some give him credit for. Although I'm pretty sure one particular user will still find enough to rant about ;)
I'm not ashamed to admit that I enjoy Sawano's usual over-the-top scoring style. It can get a bit exhausting at times but I like it nevertheless.
So this is easily my least favourite of his scores but maybe some of you will enjoy it.

I'm pretty sure this is the only other soundtrack by Keisuke Shinohara that you will find uploaded on the internet. He composed more than half of this soundtrack including the main theme. The rest is by an unknown composer named Muneo Teruya. Additionally, there's 3 other composers who each contributed one track. It's a bit short but still quite nice.

You don't count. Your just as bad as Herbaciak and I in that we love music the rest of the Thread hates!

Haha. I guess you are right! It is good to be different :).

Of course, one can convert to whatever one wishes, but all that aside, wrong is wrong... ;)In my opinion there is really no difference between the two. Both are losseless and have the same audio quality. It's just apple losseless is more convenient for most people because you can just play it on your itunes. While FLAC can be particular tricky to covert and play. I never could figure out the "EA" program that people use for flac nowadays so I simply turned to itunes where i can easily convert my cds into 320 kbs MP3 and Apple loseless with no problem at all. I understand what you mean when you say it's technically not FLAC but imo it technically is ^_^.

tangotreats
07-05-2013, 04:19 PM
Well, it's not really a case of technicalities; FLAC is not ALAC, and Concorde is not an Airbus A380 even though both are flying machines designed to transport people long distances by air. Apples are not oranges, even though both are spherical fruits that contain juice.

TL;DR - If it's in ALAC, please say it's in ALAC... There's nothing explicitly *wrong* with ALAC, but if you have apples for sale, I do not understand the logic in refusing to simply say they're apples. If you're going to advertise them as oranges don't be surprised when people say "Ah, I expected oranges because that's what you said they were." ;)

I would say that, community-wise, most people find ALAC more tricky than FLAC - FLAC has open source developers behind it, hardware support, ubiquity, and brand recognition. EAC is a BIG pain in the butt to get configured if you're not familiar with it but it can pay dividends. iTunes is not a reliable CD ripper. It's not bad - and not nearly as bad as it used to be - but EAC is the gold standard. It's worth your while to figure out how it works; it's a great, great package once you've wrapped your head round its less-than-intuitive interface... :)

Just to clarify; I haven't got a problem with ALAC or your rips, although all things being equal I would prefer an EAC rip to an iTunes rip. :)

Thank you for sharing

@tango: More important, as far as I know FLAC is the only codec that has an extensive testsuite. Which is kinda important if you claim to properly archive music.

Here I go again asking help from the symphonic lovers. :p

I ripped 3 more classical pieces, which I don't know who they belong too.

I admit the first is too short to get what it is. I kinda feel Wagner in it. :/
The second is violin based in rhythm (nothing comes to my head referring to it...)
The third makes me think of Massenet... But then again, I don't feel it at all. :/

I really loved it... but I somehow see it functioning best as a standalone. I'd be cautiously optimistic to see another instalment with the proviso that they don't go cheap; part of the appeal for me was the sumptuous animation and yes, the A-grade score. I'd rather they didn't adopt this as a franchise and then run it into the ground with a succession of low budget, poorly animated, synth scored OVAs. If they're asking for donations to make it, this doesn't bode well.

The first episode cost 250,000 - which is a scary sum of money. They'll either ask for that amount again and not get it and not make the episode, or they'll ask for less than they need and end up making something shoddy.

Leave it alone, Trigger. It was a great short... but part of its charm is that it isn't a franchise - it was a wonderfully creative 30 minute love letter to the genre. Leave it alone and do something different, now.

Well, they actually are doing something different. An original 24 episode Aniplex-funded action anime airing this fall from the director and writer of Gurren Lagann.

This will just be a little side project.

Edit:
Q:
Are we going to see more of Little Witch Academia:
A:
Most of you have probably already heard that there is going to be a Kickstarter for episode 2 of LWA (as was announced at the public panel). What was not mentioned there, was something even more exciting: Although Trigger does not want to start it now because they only have one director, and they'll be busy with Kill la Kill followed by the second episode of LWA, Otsuka really wants to make an actual TV anime for LWA. He's not really sure when, though.

Q: What can we expect from Kill la Kill?
A: While Otsuka didn't want to give much away, he said that anybody who liked Gurren Lagann's over the top action will be extremely satisfied with Kill la Kill (he even made the claim that it was even more over the top). He also said that very few people will be able to predict where it's going. Also, it's driving their animators crazy trying to turn the craziness of the script into animation. And it will be entirely hand drawn, like LWA.

You know there are times when I really really love the internet: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1311401276/little-witch-academia-2 (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1311401276/little-witch-academia-2/posts)

In the end I predict there will be enough money for a full 24 episode series with the same quality as the OVA *a two hour score by Oshima with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra* and a possible movie as well. Come to think of it, any chance for more Oshima is reason enough to back this project.

nextday
07-09-2013, 09:50 PM
Yeah, I saw it too. Crazy. Though they didn't mention anything about Oshima on the project page and there's nothing about a soundtrack CD in the rewards though which is worrisome.

I ended up sending them a question asking if Oshima is returning for this. She has previously said she wanted LWA to become a series so I don't think there should be any issues.

It's pretty scary. I wasn't overly thrilled with the OVA - it was very pretty, the character designs were beautiful, the animation was exceptional by anime standards... but it was a plot-by-numbers. It's hard to introduce a world, introduce some characters, give us some backstory, give them something exciting to do, and tie up all the loose ends... all in 26 minutes. In the end, I don't think they were seriously trying - it's a superb animation showcase, but a terrible story: There are young witches; one of them is small, not very good, and doesn't come from a "wizard family"... and she's a fan of a celebrity witch who was famous when she was a kid... but everybody else believes the celebrity witch is a fraud. They do some exciting stuff, but the useless witch saves the day with a spell she learned from the celebrity witch, thus gaining the respect of her peers both for herself and for her celebrity idol. The snooty "proper witches" get a severe dressing down and the underdog prevails. THE END. That is literally that.

Nothing wrong with it... it is what it is; a short and highly indulgent film made with a luxurious budget, designed to show off the skills of a new generation of Japanese animators. It's the film equivalent of a showy Liszt piano shiowpiece; full of noise and bluster, outrageous levels of showing off... but devoid of soul - and that's exactly what it's supposed to be.

Of course, Oshima's score is out of this world... but I fear that the music isn't going to be a primary driving force behind making LWA 2, and I doubt whether the producers will seriously consider engaging A List, expensive Oshima and sending her half way across the world to record another fifteen minutes of music. Could be wrong... Stranger things have happened... That said, I'm calling it now - if LWA2 does happen, it will in order of likelihood a) have another composer who provides a cheap synthy score or maybe a spindly domestic orchestra, b) exclusively reuse the score from the first episode, c) have Oshima writing fragments of filler music for Gokusen-sized ensemble and they'll reuse the Moscow score for setpieces.

Now, if there's a movie or a TV series... I would say there's a reasonable chance of seeing a big score coming out of that... but I still don't know if I trust lightning to strike in the same place twice within two years...

I'd like to believe there's another reason. Trigger is trying something new by going to Kickstarter. They are listening to their overseas audience and putting them in charge. We (overseas fans) are, for once, going to be able to get a sequel to an anime that was popular over here but not so much in Japan. And we are the ones making it happen.

Kickstarter and anime has never really taken off but think of what may happen after other studios see how successful this one is. It's exciting.

Fun fact: the last show directed by the head of Trigger was a TV anime that pretty much a homage to Western 90's cartoons.

Well, I just hope Oshima will be given enough budget for at least a decent orchestra. Sometimes though, as a humongous fan of her music, I would like to hear some non-orchestral music by Oshima. She can do jazz, bossa nova, chamber music, heartfelt piano solos, and more so well. Tenchijin soundtrack has this delicious track called "神秘", a jazzy piece that blends piano, violin, and guitar in an amazing way. Too bad it's so damn short at two minutes (I had to press repeat 20 times before moving onto the next track!). But of course, she's at her best with a big orchestra. :D I just want to hear the even more intimate side of her.

Trigger hasn't decided what the stretch goals will be for the KS yet. Hopefully, one of them will be to get the State Cinema Symphony Orchestra (or otherwise stellar group) back for the soundtrack recording. I don't think they've stated whether Oshima will be returning for it or not (and then an OST release!), but I've shot them the question over twitter. Here's hoping.

*PARRRP* ;)

I haven't studied French since I was ten years old. :awsm: (Which was 19 years ago.)

Are you telling me this guy is speaking crappy French? Does this mean he's not French either? *grumbles*

I wish we could find out where he comes from so somebody could translate "FOR GOD'S SAKE, BUGGER OFF!" and he'd finally understand...

Or that could be worse... he could ACTUALLY be French, and "speaking" in SMS language (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_language).
I can also, being French myself, give you the translation to your all caps phrase, it is "POUR L'AMOUR DE DIEU, FOUS LE CAMP !".

Or that could be worse... he could ACTUALLY be French, and "speaking" in SMS language (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_language).
...

Or he could simply be illiterate. And come on, SMS language is done to take shortcuts, not to make as long sentences full of new words.

The only way it could be worse would be not to have the phonetical match wich is still recognizable here if you pronouce it. Otherwise I can tell this guy will be forbiden for a job for wich he'd have to write... And I mean even write "out of work" ! But I wonder if he did that on purpose.

-

... Tango, where is the PM with your correction ??!!! I'm waiting !... And please don't tell me "je suis dsole" like above, because you're a man, and man man says "je suis dsol" !

... Gosh ! I corrected it all now.

So what does everyone think of Go Sakabe being on his own so far? I think he did a pretty good job with Date A Live. I wasn't particularly amazed by anything but there are a good amount of tracks that i still listen to very often. I saw that he recently started doing another show called Kitakubu Katsudou Kiroku but i after watching the first episode i don't care for much that was there.

I think this is another good score coming from Bear McCreary. The main theme (what I am guessing is the Main Theme) at the beginning of the video is solid. It reminds me of his Battlestar and Da Vinci work. Sirius, I am posting this for you ;).

I am blown away by the music in the trailer for How to Train Your Dragon 2 as I can tell it is written by John Powell. Of course it was confirmed a while ago that he was returning, but I can't wait for this one. I really enjoyed the first one and the music for this sounds all the more powerful and exhilarating.

I don't deny that Djawadi's score for Pacific Rim is very much in the realm of generic sounding RC themes. Still, he wrote a quite catchy main theme and it was fabulous in the film. Gotta say it's VERY enjoyable so far and there lots of moments in the show where the music is left to shine in it's own glory. The show also wasn't to bad either. Main Theme for the film Europa Report:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIFmiaT5u2Y

I really love this composition. The string ensemble and piano really work well. The melodies and ostinati are addictive. To those who dread McCreary's synth sound from Defiance, you will hear be in for a treat as the only part that has synthesizer sounds would be a few seconds in the beginning. After that, we are treated to some top notch chamber style music. I am really excited for this one to release, which I believe will be soon.

Oh and he will also be scoring the music to Marvel's Agents of Shield and Starz's Black Sails, which tells the tale of Captain Flint before Treasure Island. It will be interesting to hear how he handles the music for both. This seems to be his year and the fact that he acknowledges that Shirley Walker's score to Batman: The Animated Series as the best score in superhero TV music is a plus ;).

Indeed, pacific Rim was quite awesome, I saw it yesterday. I agree on the music too. Still this film kinda makes a live action Evangelion unnecessary. At least right now, still want to see one though. I view the film as a vindication for all us Anime fans. Took about 30 years, but we're finally getting some recognition of sorts.

So the new trailer for Rome II has a closer look at the score and while the battle tracks are a bit too rythmic for my taste and have that annoying trailer music vibe, the cinematics have some old sword and sandal movie vibe to them (at least from what I've heared from the previews) so perhaps it won't be necessary to replace all of the game music with Gabriel Yared's Troy, Alexander, Titus and LAIR.

By the way, since I suspect someone else here would be interested, I wanted to share information about an app (for smartphones)/ application (for computer) that I recently started using that is very useful for learning Japanese (and any other language). The app on android is called Ankidroid Flash Cards but you can also sign up for Ankiweb.net on the web. Basically it is a flash card app you can use to supplement a book or class, or you can use certain sets that work well for learning directly from them.

The most useful one I have found so far is a Japanese Core 2000 set with audio of sentences and then the translation and writing of the sentence. I wouldn't use this as a complete beginner but it is useful if you have taken Japanese in the past and want to refresh and strengthen your learning. Some basic learning in a class or through something like Japan-Activator (Ja Sensei on android) would be necessary before starting so that you know basic Japanese grammar including how particles work etc.

Yeah, I took 3 semesters in university so it isn't so bad. I started up again since my fiance (male) decided to learn Spanish in his free time. I had a few tools but they weren't what I needed so flash cards like this help me to focus on doing a small amount per day. I still remember a decent amount so it isn't so bad. Does anyone know a score by Akira Senju that is similar to Valrave? Been wanting more of his work for a while now :).

Vinphonic
07-18-2013, 07:50 PM
Similar is exactly the word to describe a huge part of his scores, some pieces are just carbon copies with a different melody on top and action is usually not his strong point (Valvrave is a pleasant surprise in that regard) but he has composed magnificent scores for Red Garden, Victory Gundam and Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood. They are of course more lyrical or have more of the traditional epic grandour than the more straightforward approach in Valvrave but Tales of Vesperia ~The First Strike~ or his very short Grand Odyssey sound more like it than others.

tangotreats
07-18-2013, 10:43 PM
I must confess... I'm getting tired of Senju. Not because the music is bad, but because it's the exact same score over and over and over again. Listening to a Senju score, it seems almost encoded into the fabric of the music that he'd rather be doing something else. That and, as you said, the guy just isn't an action composer. He's a melodist, and a romantic. Some of the harmonies in Valvrave wouldn't be out of place in a syrupy 1950s string arrangement. But, when all is said and done, he's writing the same music he did twenty years ago; not just the same style but the same damn everything... but it's missing something. In 1993, he gave a damn. Now, he doesn't give a damn. That's the impression I get.

Oshima's been in the game as long as Senju, give or take a few years... and she's doing her best work RIGHT NOW. She's getting better every score. Senju is writing limp retreads of earlier scores. He's coasting. Sometimes he's inspired - I know some folk in this thread will disagree, but I still say FMA Brotherhood was one of his best, if not his best work full stop... but by and large, Senju snoozes through his projects these days, reusing themes, harmonies, progressions, orchestrations left, right and centre, and putting in the barest minimum effort necessary.

I do not have the foggiest idea why he takes these sci-fi assignments, when he's borderline incompetent at action music, but literally a magician at the art of lyrical melody. Senju on a romantic tragedy drama, YES PLEASE! Senju on another sci-fi show, I'll pass...

There's nothing wrong with Valvrave... but wouldn't you rather listen to V Gundam? If somebody took away Valvrave, would you feel like you were missing out on something really special?

Am I just being a miserable shit?

...Wait, don't answer that. ;)

Sirusjr
07-19-2013, 05:48 AM
Well I've rarely gotten into Senju in the first place. I just grab his stuff because it is orchestral Japanese stuff. I found FMA brotherhood to be pretty bland really (though I couldn't really get into Oshima's FMA scores either). I didn't particularly enjoy Valrave either.

Vinphonic
07-19-2013, 05:05 PM
I personally would place both FMA among the best scores ever written for an anime. Especially Oshima's score (including the movie score) has not only a great tragic core (Brothers and Homunculus) but superb orchestration and romantic feel on top of the heroic marches (I really love the Alchemist Theme), bombastic action and somber piano pieces. Xam'd has a stronger personal identity but I love the epic scale and romanticism of FMA a bit more. Brotherhood is overall the darker score of the two and feels less like a film score and more like a concert work. I must say that I'm not very fond of some tracks here and there but it has real standouts like the Amestris Theme and by god that is perhaps my favourite military march from an anime and it's really a stroke of genius how something so relativly simple on paper can have so much power, glory and grandour.

A million apologies for how long it's taken to get this up! Hopefully it'll be worth the wait.

What do we have here, then? Well, for starters, an absolutely KILLER theme - and that's bearing in mind Hisaishi's skill as a melodist. We first hear it in the first track as a trumpet solo - a cheerful melody calling back to Hisaishi's early Ghibli work (splashes of Totoro and Laputa) that expands out into a lovely pastoral piece for full orchestra. Nobody, truly nobody, can score a beautiful sunny day like Hisaishi. You can feel the warmth and taste the apples. There is a significant role for mandolin, guitar, and ukulele (unusual for Hisaishi) which blends with the orchestra beautifully, and if you're wondering what that weird springy noise is... that's the Jew's harp! (Which, incidentally, is nothing to do with Jews or Judaism, and is in fact an instrument native to the Asian continent.)

As is usually the case with film scores, the cues are short, with over half the tracks coming in under two minutes and only five tracks over three minutes... but it's Hisaishi, and he says what he needs to say in the time he has to say it. The short cues feel just long enough - and the album plays beautifully as a complete listening experience; ignore the tracks flicking past and imagine it's an episodic symphony divided up into 28 parts.

It's youthful, it's happy, it's joyous. I admit I didn't really enjoy it the first time I listened... but then I listened to it on a gorgeous summer's afternoon, relaxing with a glass of good cider, with the sun pouring down... and then it all made sense.

Coming up... we've heard Hisaishi's ode to sunshine... later on, we'll hear his ode to the sea...

Enjoy :)

My rip. FLAC Level 8. Booklet scans and English track listing included. This rip is from the USA release by Discovery Records, so includes English sleeve notes as well in the very informative booklet.

What with recent less-than-complimentary discussion about Akira Senju, let's have possibly his finest score of all time, in a nice upgrade to FLAC. There are two versions floating about online; the first is an awful cassette transfer that plays too slow and is plagued by hiss and a more recent rip at 320kbps from Xiami, released to us courtesy of our own Herr Salat... Now, there are three.

The Mystery Of Rampo is a film which fits Senju's skills and strengths like a glove. Melody, harmony, emotion. This is where he shines - this is the sort of music at which there is simply no finer composer. In the sleeve notes, he writes about the profound effect the film had on him ("When I saw the rough edit of the film on video before music had been set to it, I felt tense with emotion. The world of Rampo was already completed in my mind. I was over-joyed at being surrounded by such talent and genius. Everything I had been trying to find in Japanese films for the past five years was in this work. I have devoted all of my knowledge and experience into the making of this recording. As a composer and creator of music, I could not have had a more wonderful or electrifying experience.) -- and his enthusiasm is clear in the score. Completely original, delicate, darkly romantic, sumptuous, beautiful. If you're more familiar with Senju the awkward action composer, or Senju the recycler... give this one a try... this is Senju the wizard, Senju the genius.

Technical note: I had a devil's own job getting a good rip of this CD. The CD itself is in spotless physical condition, but when I tried to rip it, it failed repeatedly on Tracks 6 and 7. After trying six different CD-ROM drives, I managed to get a rip that completed without any error. Track 7 failed AccurateRip, although it registered no read or sync errors, and EAC verified it as accurately ripped - so I'm confident that this is of good quality.

Oh yes, and I am aware that the last track is the same as the first track. ;)

Enjoy! :)

There is no neck under Jerry Goldsmith's ponytail, only a tatoo of another great score to a B-grade action movie.

At a signing back in the 90s Jerry Goldsmith wrote a few musical notes for a fan on his copy of the soundtrack to The Mummy. Those few notes later became the score to The 13th Warrior. (That fan was, in fact, Graeme Revell)

Jerry Goldsmith wrote the score for Alien between lunchtime and dinnertime, then wrote Star Trek: The Motion Picture for dessert.

The line Harrison Ford speaks from Air Force One "Get off my plane!" is actually based on a feud Jerry Goldsmith once had with Randy Newman in which during a heated argument Goldsmith was known to have said "Get off my podium!"

Before settling on the Euro, the Italian government considered changing their currency from lira to Jerry Goldsmith soundtracks.

Jerry Goldsmith has never had a rejected score. It is his scores that sometimes reject movies.

Jerry Goldsmith's theme to Star Trek Voyager is the first example of a TV series created solely to fit the music he wrote for it.

Jerry Goldsmith was told to write a very classical and tonal score to Planet of the Apes. Something like Mozart or Mendelssohn. But Jerry Goldsmith only takes orders from one person: Jerry Goldsmith.

Once on the Todd AO scoring stage a violist coughed between takes of LA Confidential's soundtrack so Jerry Goldsmith fired the entire orchestra and recorded the entire score entirely with hand farts.

I have read what some of you thought of the initial previews of Martin O'Donnell's music to Destiny, but I encourage you guys to give this a shot. It is the best effort by O'Donnell yet, imo. It sounds more musically mature than Halo ever was. I love the melodies and orchestration. Very powerful and moving! Sorry for the poor YouTube quality, but it is listenable ;). I hope you all enjoy his as much as I did.

Really? I didn't mind them too much at all - it's not even close to what we got with Zelda.

I mean, I would say 85% of the music is completely uninterrupted - and that is including both the audience and the video that is played in the background! Honestly, you hear the worse of it with "I Am the Doctor" - but even then goes in phases in only the opening third.

But on an additional note, the crowd IS encouraged to do this. Between the monsters that are on the stairs interacting with the audience, and the big gargantuan video (with sound!) I am not at all surprised that the audience goes off into cheers every now and then.

This time, I would out more blame on BBC than on the audience. The whole atmosphere just says "fan wank".[COLOR="Silver"]

---------- Post added at 11:12 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:55 AM ----------

Okay boys and girls, let us have an itsy bitsy winsy little chat about a little dinosaur called Godzilla.

And by a chat about Godzilla, I obviously mean the music for the franchise! This is Pirate Music HQ after all.

So, between 2004 and 2010 Toho released six gargantuan box sets containing fifty hours of music spread across 29 different films.

That's right. Fifty. Hours. I will let that settle in your head before we continue.

But to be fair, let me be a little bit critical. I am still in the Shōwa Era right now, having just finished listening to "Godzilla's Revenge"...and Akira Ifukube, bless his heart, is just on redial after "King Kong Vs. Godzilla". I am not exaggerating when I saw a good 40% of all he does is copying and pasting themes from his first two Godzilla flicks. Granted these are all GOOD cues, but after sixty listens to an essentially unedited theme I am getting sick of it.

Fortunately towards the end of the Shōwa Era we get some relief in the form of Mr. Masaru Sato, who does not use ANY of Ifukube's themes whatsover (much to everyone's relief). Now this could very well be nostalgia talking, as I watched the every living hell out of "Ebirah, Horror of the Deep" when I was a kid, but Sato uses California Surfer Guitars in a very refreshing way. "A Sailboat, a Storm and a Monster" still manages to give me a certain sense of dread, and his chase theme is ridiculously good (even if it is at less than a minute).

Kunio Miyauchi's work for "Godzilla's Revenge" is just a big bore though, but the whole movie is a turd so we shouldn't expect anything else.

Anyways, I split the release three ways, one for each of the Kaiju Eras: Shōwa (https://mega.co.nz/#!uc4nlIyR!HR0c4WJjQLevbbb5TWIyDGjPUeNBJC13980I6Hk LrjY), Heisei (https://mega.co.nz/#!TJokyaQb!X-MSny8m3jZohX_26ki-CDnVzOBW5ld2bx6tafg9MiQ), and then Millennium (https://mega.co.nz/#!XRoEEKBI!GNKp9GkbX8T6-ty2kVybzAoT5kIRMJFyoiCFZv8aZg4). That means you are going to get some very big downloads - all three together will be around nearly 6 GB. I felt that was a better option than having 39 different .rar (29 film soundtracks + Godzilla Unleashed + 9 Bonus Releases).

JOE HISAISHI
NHK Special Giant Deep Sea Creatures (2013)
(aka NHK Shinkai Project)

https://mega.co.nz/#!U9oCWZTZ!ahqds32-HT_Pa2BCpGxPki0QT-kflF7M6mzFtPZhwuY

Orchestra conducted by The Composer

NOT MY RIP. FLAC. Many thanks indeed to a former member of FFshrine who doesn't post any more, but who has given me permission to share this with you. Track titles in English (a competent translation by a native Japanese speaker, not my usual wonky translation...) and unfortunately no booklet scans... If I find them, I'll update this post.

Joe Hisaishi scoring a prestigious nature documentary for NHK surely this must be some fantastic dream? No dream! This is, for me, one of the rare occasions where my desires, my expectations, and the completed score, completely match up. So, what was I hoping for?

First of all, a Taiga Drama-style full length main theme a nice, three minute chunk of music. Check. We have a delicious, fully symphonic main title theme, with a beginning, middle, and end a concert suite tone-poem.

Secondly, a strong and romantic theme that didnt just crop up once and then disappear forever; something that would function both as a full length theme and as a series of melodic and harmonic ideas that could be broken down into their constituent elements and peppered throughout the score. Check.

Thirdly, for Hisaishi to continue with his recent experimentation phase and try something a bit different. Check.

Finally, for Hisaishi to perhaps revisit and expand upon his water ideas from Ponyo. Check.

Essentially, this score is Joe Hisaishi A Sea Symphony. If youre looking for three descriptive words elegant, passionate, warm. Also of interest not even the mighty Hisaishi is above writing in what Ive come to call the NHK style theres just something about these grand NHK scores not for one moment do composers lose their unique voice (and certainly not Hisaishi) but theres always *something* in there which sets the music apart from the composers usual style. Oshima did it in Planet Of Life and Data Map For 3.6 Billion People Hattori Takayuki did it in Shinsengumi Even Akira Senju did it in Furinkazan. Now, Joe Hisaishi joins the ranks and melds the NHK sound perfectly with his own technique.

Well, what can I say? I really liked Kiseki no Ringo but I absolutely adore this one. Its got a great theme, Hisaishis amazing (and STILL maturing) mastery of the modern symphony orchestra, and some cracking action - Strong Creature Of The Deep Sea, Bluntnose Sixgill Shark is just brutal; Ive never heard Hisaishi so raw and so dangerous and hes channelling Janacek! Its funny how all over the world, documentaries consistently bring out the best in our treasured film composers truly, there is nothing more fantastical than the natural world! Please enjoy this wonderful exercise in COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY IGNORING every single development modern film scoring techniques have undergone; absolutely timeless, a great score today that will still be a great score in 100 years.

Enjoy! :)

I can't explain what exactly it was but I listened to Deep Sea Creatures a few times and it did not grab me in the slightest. To me it felt like it was lacking in all that really makes Hisaishi interesting. You are certainly correct that it is very raw and brutal. Perhaps the word I would use is dark.

tangotreats
07-24-2013, 02:13 AM
May I ask what you enjoy about Hisaishi that's missing here?

That sounds like a "WTF is wrong with you???!" request but it's actually genuine... To me, this score is everything that makes Hisaishi interesting - a roll call of his talent, all rolled up into one package... I'd be fascinated to hear your thoughts. :)

Doublehex
07-24-2013, 02:20 AM
I haven't listened to it, but I already know what Sirusjr doesn't like.

It's dark. He hates "dark" music. He likes it when music is lighthearted, heroic and optimistic. When music starts to take a slant towards the darker side of human nature that is a big turn off for him.

Sirusjr
07-24-2013, 02:56 AM
To me it sounded like it was lacking 1) a core theme that resonated with me, and 2) hope. Then again i also took a long time to warm to Kiseki no Ringo so perhaps it is just how I relate to Hisaishi. I still can't really enjoy Mononoke Hime because it is too dark for me. I think Doublehex is pretty close in describing exactly what it is. The best way I can explain it is how many horror scores make me nervous while listening to them because they are too effective. Rather than feeling the music driving me forward or touching my heart, I feel it pulling me down into a deep dark depression. Wolverine (Marco Beltrami) and World War Z (also Beltrami) are two good examples of this.

NaotaM

Million thanks for Deep Sea Creatures. Haven't gotten to it yet, but already excited. Ringo was great, but this one seems like it'll be more...full. Look at all those long, meaty track lengths...

So anyway, looking forward to this. Always tended to like Hisaishi at his darkest. Mononoke, Le Petit Poucet, even Onna Nobunaga exhibit the man's talent at creeping dissonance and rhythmic drive that still sounds grandoise and purposeful.

Dark sounds good, I prefer the dark serious stuff, why do you think I'm always going on about Jin-Roh? Big dark powerful emotional pieces get me going. Same for Taku Iwasaki's Now and Then, Here and There. That 20 minute Standing In The Sunset Glow is amazing. Dark, sad, really sad, and a little uplifting at the end. I'm looking forward to hearing this one.

Tell me about it... It's rather sad. The first Doctor Who concert in 2006 was a very classy affair; it was marketed and planned as a classical concert and the audience reacted appropriately. Now, they're sold almost like Doctor Who Live with an orchestra there too. It's really not about the music at all, any more; it's about noise, spectacle, Daleks, and stupid children. Pity, yes... Surprise, no...

Doublehex
07-24-2013, 07:33 PM
I would still go in a heartbeat. The audience are quiet through many pieces, such as "Rings of Akhaten" and "Song for Fifty", and their cheers are not so pervasive to ruin my enjoyment of the music.

Tango, I think it is still about the music, but it is marketed as a concert that will be easier for people to go to. They do still play classical pieces after all.

I want to check out Oshima's work, but what soundtrack would be a good place to start? What would be truly phenomenal? I could ask the same thing for Yamashita. I've run out of music as far as the composers I currently listen to.

On another note, hey tangotreats, do you know of any music I may like? I think the Kid Icarus Uprising soundtrack is still my favorite overall OST. Something orchestral, of good overall quality. I ask you because you are a knowledgeable critic that knows good from bad, and everything in between.

Yoshihiro Kanno: Water Scene (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/works-yoshihiro-kanno-resounding-sphere-i-1991-a-130488/#post2316431) - for Meditation ~ Sleeping. Maybe also his Angel's Egg (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f91/lossless-anime-music-thread-66456/97.html#post2330605) score. The subtitle for the CD is "Living in Water"... ^^"

Kon-Tiki by Johan Soderqvist, quite nice exotic score.
Shogun Mayeda by John Scott - one of his finest scores, delightful theme
Solisterrae by Pascal Gaigne - a delightful relaxing score. I have no idea what the film is about but it shows the beach on the cover.
Those are the first few that come to mind.

Not orchestral ... well then here's my favorite: ARIA (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vY3M8XNlNrQ)
Absolutly love the three soundtracks, no better music for a relaxing afternoon (besides a Hisaishi score), also the most relaxing show I've watched with really beautiful moments.
Thanks all. I love Aria as well.

I thought of a few more myself too:
Nanatsu no Umi no Tico by Miwa Hibiki (a.k.a. Michiru Oshima)
Umi no Twilight Zone by Hitomi Kuroishi
Umimonogatari by Ken Muramatsu

You can't go wrong with Fullmetal Alchemist. At least it was my introduction to Oshima and I still believe it to be one of her very best works. Magic happens when she records in Russia and this is no exception.

Could someone please re-up Tact I and II, plus Unknown Aspects of the British Museum by Taro Iwashiro? I missed these. I usually prefer FLAC, but I doubt anyone has them in that format. I still can't find the FLAC version of Red Cliff II.

TACT (Thread 137788)
TACT II (Thread 137789)
NHK Special: The British Museum (Thread 137790)
Red Cliff Part 2 (http://forums.ffshrine.org/f92/red-cliff-part-1-2-2008-2009-a-110213/#post2404342)

All lossy.

I'm also trying to find H2 OST 2. Do those OSTs exist in lossless anywhere? If not, I'll take lossy. I found OST 1 in lossy.

I have just found this on BakaBT (http://bakabt.me/166639-h2-ost-collection-mp3.html) with OST 2 in 128 kbps quality.

For Michiru Oshima - I'd say start with Year 1 In the North, Sora no Woto, and Blast of Tempest. On the more intimate side I am also quite fond of Adiantum Blue.
For Kousuke Yamashita - my favorite is Chihayafuru. After that, Glass Fleet and Dragonaut the Resonance. Keep in mind many of his bigger space scores have a lot of cues that are not orchestral.

You will find a good introduction to these and other anime scores in my Loveliness, Elegance, and Nobility compilations (Thread 118491). If the links in there are all dead let me know and I'll re-up them :)

Funny, I don't have a single Star Wars CD in my collection. I'm only now slowly warming to the scores. Then again I'm probably one of the few people who never really watched the Star Wars movies very many times. I'll rarely watch a movie more than twice.

I'm a huge fan of original Star Wars trilogy, but I never cared for new one (it's passable at best). I also do not care for books, comics, TV series, games etc. I don't love world of Star Wars, I love three wonderful adventure flicks from long, long time ago. Saying that, I don't think Williams should score new SW movie. Why? Because the world changed, music changed and god damn, I'd love to see NEW Star Wars.

First trilogy is fantastic, but - despite overall quality of the films - a big part of it's greatness is sentiment. I don't think that creators should go for sentimental ride and hiring Williams is precisely that. Abrams with SW should make the same thing which he did with Star Trek - kill tradition and create something new. Never liked old Star Trek, but I liked the new movies. Why? Cause they are not Star Trek;).

So yeah, even though I love those three old movies, I'd like to see and hear something new for a change. Reanimating a corpse for most time is a bad idea. And if they need to do that, at least give it some new robes. And lens flares;D.

p.s.
I still believe that new SW movie can be cool.

Who says that Abrams can't "reinvent" Williams? Williams has been "reinvented" before, with the original Star Wars, with Harry Potter, and Potter 3.

tangotreats
07-27-2013, 07:44 PM
Williams does not need "reinventing" and particularly not by an incompetent hack of Abrams' like.

And, I'd very much like to hear who should score this film if not Williams... Name one composer who is a) competent, b) has a hope in hell of actually being hired for it in today's climate, and c) is powerful enough to be allowed to write a decent score and not be micromanaged into writing Batman Begins In Space. Extra bonus points for a1) Somebody competent to or beyond Williams' level... ;)

Williams does not need "reinventing"

You mistake "reinventing" with "selling out" and going Zimmery and slathering electronics, drums, foghorn, electric guitars, heavy compressed brickwall mixing etc, or writing in the modern style most other composer's are forced into writing in.

Which is not at all what I meant.

DO you really think Abrams - the guy who lusts after Giacchino's hack work - has anything useful to offer musically to a man who's been a professional composer since the early 1950s, single-handedly revitalised the romantic orchestral film score, defined the very concept of film music for a generation, and still - even at the age of 81 - is completely unmatched in the industry?

Don't get me wrong - I'm not against a composer - even a genius such as Williams - trying something new... but I very much doubt that anybody who thinks the sun shines out of Giacchino's arse has any meaningful advice to offer the man who scored Jaws, Superman, Star Wars 1-6, ET, Indiana Jones, and dozens more...

The simple fact is this: If Williams doesn't score this film, the score is 100% guaranteed to be shit. Simple as that. This is 2013. Every single composer in Hollywood with any hint of talent (at least, talent even approaching Williams') is either a) dead, b) retired, or c) sold out and writing modern trash to pay the electric bill.

Name one composer who is a) competent, b) has a hope in hell of actually being hired for it in today's climate

Abel Korzeniowski - guy is on the rise, but unfortunately associated with dramas. He can write big, powerful music though;

James Horner - lately he has rather bad luck...;

John Powell - I know what you think of this guy, but I think he is more than capable of writing something great;

And I would love to hear SW score by Murray Gold or... Walter Murphy:D. Also Brian Tyler is definitely competent and liked by producers, but he is also rather boring composer, even if has potential.

But the truth is the truth - If not John, we would hear music by some other Williams or... Djawadi. Or Streitenfeld. So yeah, not hell of a choice. But still, I would love to here some new approach to SW scores.

tangotreats
07-27-2013, 09:37 PM
Abel Korzeniowski...

...Is vaguely competent, nowhere near Williams, has no prior experience scoring a Blockbuster, would never get the gig in a million years, and if he did, he would never be given free reign anyway. Getting hired at the last moment to replace a third-rate Horner romance score does not = guy who will be trusted with $300,000,000 major franchise. Fails tests a), b), c), and a1).

James Horner...

...Is competent, but hasn't written anything noteworthy for twenty years and has completely sold out in his most recent scores. If he suddenly discovered his 1982 style again, great... but Star Wars by post-Avatar Horner? Even post-Spiderman Horner? No thank you. Horner today is getting work because a) Jim Cameron is directing, b) Avatar sold like hotcakes - apart from that, basically retired from the A List. Fails tests c) and a1).

John Powell...

...Is more competent than your average RC clone, but ultimately writes above average music for below average cartoons. Fails test a), c), and a1).

Murray Gold...

...Is vaguely competent, could possibly produce something that at least sounded partially decent with the right director, but that ain't Abrams. Even with Doctor Who under his belt, is still a minor footnote composer in the Hollywood sense and has no chance whatsoever of getting hired for any kind of expensive movie. Fails tests a), b), c), and a1).

Walter Murphy...

...Is very competent, but still miles off Williams level. Has no prior experience scoring a blockbuster, has retired except for Seth MacFarlane films, and as a typecast comedy composer has no chance whatsoever of getting hired for a serious sci-fi blockbuster. Fails tests b), c), and a1).

;)

If not Williams, then with Jerry Goldsmith dead the only other option satisfying me would be... Joe Hisaishi. ;)

Vinphonic
07-27-2013, 10:22 PM
I don't know about Hisaishi ... I love almost every single score to death but I would not hire him for Star Wars to be honest. Same with Oshima, it just doesn't feel right to me. My candidates are of course Japanese (Japan has currently the best music environment, music education and opportunities for aspiring composers who want to write like Williams, that's a fact!) and I would choose Kousuke Yamashita, Naoki Sato or Toshiyuki Watanabe (the action in Majestic Prince is already Star Wars enough). If they are not available I would turn to Amano or Kanno and tell them to rip off Stravinsky and Korngold to the best of their abilities.

But on the western front there is still Lennie Moore.

We are forgetting how Williams reinvented himself by writing Memoirs of a Geisha which, to me, is a complete departure from most of the scores he has done his entire career. I can't see any other composer writing Star Wars than John and that isn't because I am a fan of his music but like what Tango said... you aren't going to find a composer that has the kind of experience and knowledge that he brings to a project. He is the perfect collaborative composer who can still retain his own musical direction and work with the director's criteria. Not too many composers can do that especially in the current market because either you are a Zimmer or a zero. This is because director's think that Zimmer style music is in demand which for some reason it is. I think it more impressive that John Williams has the balls to be John Williams in a market that wants everyone to be someone else. He can write an orchestral score in this day and still make money. That is why he is good for Star Wars because he is experienced and he doesn't need a director to sit there and tell him what to do. The man wrote War of the Worlds without seeing a script, picture, or info from Spielberg for God's sake! So, yeah, I don't think anyone else is qualified ;).

I'm going to be yelled at for saying this, but Williams these days has been sounding kinda tired to me. And it's because of his many years and great successes. Don't misunderstand me, I love his body of work. But that body has gotten rather large and bloated. Once you've done so many great things, where is there to go? I'm not ragging on the man, he's hugely talented and influential in the music scene and Hollywood in general. But I think the man needs a holiday, a rather long holiday. Hans Zimmer was starting to stagnate a bit for me but he's been doing some different things these days and not sticking to his basic tired motifs. His work with the Sherlock Holmes films and The Lone Ranger has been different. As much as I love Mark Mancina's work, he's kinda been regulated to big loud bombastic blockbusters, but when he's allowed to be a little more artistic he can have some interesting results. Hollywood needs more Japanese composers though. Anyone here familiar with Ryuichi Sakimoto's score for The Last Emperor? I love that one. I also adore much of Taku Iwasaki's work. His score for the anime series Now and Then, Here and There is right up there with the best. He had some interesting stuff with Angel Heart, Witch Hunter Robin, Origin :The Spirits Within etc. He also recently scored Soul Eater and that was interesting. Then there's Hajime Mizoguchi and his ex wife Yoko Kanno. Love to see them given some work here in the West. Honestly it's been a while since I've heard music in a recent film which has compelled me to buy the soundtrack. Shame Basil Poledouris is long dead, his scores for Conan, The Hunt for Red October and The Jungle Book were FANTASTIC. Let's also not forget Harry Gregson-Williams. He's hugely talented too, at least in my opinion, and scored many of my favourite films. Granted most of those were Tony Scott films, but whatev, lol
