Back into Skyrim after six months away (and a system switch from windows to linux... now that was fun.) Like everyone else I hit critical mass and lost my joy for the game after about the 250 hour mark. I kept up with mods from the nexus to spice things up and then in October last year, BLAM - no more windows laptop (yes, I game on a laptop and no, I don't surround myself with fans), fortunately I had a stick with Mint 16 on hence the switch. Now the fun part has been learning enough Linux language to get WINE and the OS to play nice with Skyrim but last week it all clicked and I was back in Helgen (I decided to start a totally fresh game) since then I haven't had much time to play but the joy of rediscovery is immense and this weekend is clear, Yippee

I've played games that had not only good underwater sections, but they performed better. The framerate dips below 30(due to that water ripple effect, I believe)when you're underwater in MegaMan Legends 2 and makes the game feel sluggish and a chore to play. Game is still great and fun as hell, but I feel that's the only downside with this game, the underwater sections are the worst.

Well, I can't comment on Megaman, because I haven't played it, but off the top of my head, I can't remember a single game where I've enjoyed underwater sections. They always seem terrible, slow, too dark to see properly etc etc. Maybe its just the psychic scars from Zelda's water temple still hurting after all this time...

Seriously though, I *really* hate underwater sections in games. I was playing KOTOR again a few months ago, and was reminded anew of that joyless, tortuous underwater section, with you crawling along at snail's pace in that diving suit... ugh.

Not having played either Banjo Tooie or any of the Crash games, I can't really comment. I'm happy to take your words on it though, gents. I'm obviously exaggerating to make my point here - I'm not suggesting that there *literally* aren't any good underwater levels in games, but merely that my experience of them has been overwhelmingly negative.

I remember kind of liking the 'Soda Lake' level on Super Mario World, but that could just be the sense of triumph I felt at finally mastering that 'fly under the exit with enough momentum to reach the secret exit' bit on Cheese Bridge that you have to go through to unlock the Lake level. Plus it has those cool Torpedo enemies, which aren't on any of the other levels.

But generally, I've lost track down the years of how many times my heart has sunk through the floor when I realize I have to do an underwater section. Horrible, imprecise flailing about that vaguely looks like swimming, severely restrcted range of movement, murky levels, slow pace, often having all of your regular attacks or moves deactivated. Gah! May these sections be consigned to gaming hell and burn there forever!

I suppose to be fair, underwater sections are no worse than any of the drastic changes in environment or controls that games foist on you. Vehicle sections in games that are primarily on foot for example are also rarely good, because they won't have had the development time assigned to them that the rest of the game had (Half Life 2 for example). Its just a case of the game mostly using a completely different set of rules to those that the underwater levels/sections use. On the one hand they offer some variety, but the other they bring all the woes we've discussed.

But its primarily the awful swimming and flailing about that gets me - particularly when you have to fight enemies and bosses etc, but racing against the clock to find air before you drown is another of my much hated water perils. So long as I'm not directly in the water however, I'm usually okay with it. Say if you're in a sub or something (that ocean level in Star Fox 64 is pretty funky as I recall, but the tank level still beats it IMO!) I just don't like actually having to swim about or walk along the ocean floor etc etc. There's a bit in Bioshock 2 where you have to go walking about on the sea bed, and its predictably awful.

And hey, I really love the idea of 'the fathomless deeps of the sea', the 'wonders and the horrors of the abyssal depths' etc etc. Games like Bioshock and KOTOR have had very effective horror themed ocean levels. That bit with the diving suit sucks in KOTOR, but otherwise I love the whole deep sea terror feel of Manaan. And come on - XCOM: Terror from the Deep? Now *there* was a great underwater game.

Ah, I did my Dragon Age/Dragon Age 2 playthrough a month or so back - got it done during the lean release schedules! Speaking of release schedules, I really wish Bioware would wise up and change that October release date for Inquisition. October packed to bursting with big name games - the release date for DA:I is right around the time of Alien: Isolation, The Evil Within, Shadows of Mordor, Batman Arkham Knight etc etc. Who wants to be caught up in that scrum?

If I were them, I'd throw everything I had into finishing the polishing, troubleshooting process and get it out earlier (end of August maybe). They'd have the release schedule to themselves, and they'd avoid that end of year melee (which will probably also include Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty etc etc).

If not EA/Bioware, then someone has to see sense - that release schedule is just insane. We get practically nothing of note all year, then everything at once, so we can't possibly afford and find time to play it all. Another great showcase of the razor sharp minds at work in the games industry...

Resistance 3.
Dungeon Siege 3.
Valkyria Chronicles.
FEAR 2.
Resident Evil: Operarion Raccoon City.
Killzone 2.

That's a lot of work. Then again, it is why flash drives are made. So you can get your data on that and just put it on your new system.

Vrykolas
06-10-2014, 02:00 AM
You see, when you say something like 'flash drive', it means very little to a technological illiterate like me :D For some reason it made me thnik of old sci-fi shows.

'Activate the Flash Drive!' (cue shot of those people tumbling head over heels from 'The Time Tunnel' etc)

I assume its some sort of data storage... thing. I'm pretty I know what it is, but I have no idea how it works. Unless it can retrieve data from terminally zonked consoles, then the horse has already bolted (and even if it can, I wouldn't have the first clue what to do, and having my tech savvy, PC loving friends sneer at my stone age level of tech knowhow is among my least favourite things to do).

Besides, it *is* a lot of work, but its not really *work* work, is it? Its nice to have an excuse to go back and play these games. And hell, its not like I'm buying loads of new games, more's the pity. I've only bought 1 game this year (3 if you count downloads, but Final Fantasy 10 hardly counts as I already owned it). To be frank, I'm glad to have something to fill my gaming schedule, as I wait to be overwhelmed in October's blitz.

So thanks for the suggesion (truly), but if I was to educate myself in technical matters, I'd use it on more entertaining pursuits than learning about flash drives and the like. Like having a pair of Doctor Octopus mecha limbs grafted onto my body, so I'd be able to play multiple consoles at once - that would make getting through all the games much easier. Or I could form my own multiplayer clan and be all the members myself at the same time... hmm.

Well, part of my mission in life is to try to keep people from bein couch potatoes. I play alot too, but sometimes you just need to have the need to do something other than gaming. Besides, your time could be better spent on family and such.

As far as how to use them, plug the flash drive in a usb slot. Then go to your save data. Press Triangle and you can copy it to the storage unit.

If I'm not mistaken, I've seen that you've gotten Platinum trophies on various JEPGs, which are extremely time intensive! Glass houses and all that :D I jest of course, and you're right that too much time spent in front of the screen is bad. But its unnecessary to tell me this - I've always kept extremely late hours, and require very little sleep. It allows me to get in gaming, whilst still having time for everything else of importance.

As I say, this is a rather exceptional circumstance - its sort of like speed reading a set of books you've already read. I already know most of the secrets and tricks to these games, so playing them now is much faster than it was the first time. For the couch potato thing, hey I'm a writer - its practically my job to lie about for most of the day!

Vrykolas
06-11-2014, 04:38 AM
Hey, we all set our own limits, and we are all responsible for being honest with ourselves on how much we play and how much is too much. As far as I'm concerned, you can Platinum away to your heart's content. People live their own lives - you can't live it for them. I like playing games and I'm not ashamed to say so, but I'm not crazy - I'm in no danger of being found as some kind of dessicated husk in front of my console, having died from playing World of Warcraft (or whatever) for 5 years continuously :D

Look at the games on my list, and you'll see that only a handful require more than 6 hours or so to beat. Action games like FEAR 2, Spec Ops: The Line, Killzone 2, Killzone 3 etc can be (and were) finished in just 2-3 sessions of gaming of around 3 hours each. Its only the bigger RPGs like the Dragon Age games and LA Noire that took more time. I'm right there with you that people need to be responsible with their gaming, but like I say, we all know our own limits. We can only hope that for those who don't, somebody who knows them will step in, but for the most part, I think people can be trusted to know what's right for them.

I live a very uncluttered, low tech life, which frees up a lot of time because I avoid so many of modern life's distractions. I spend hardly any time online, don't own a mobile phone, I don't use social networking (I have never looked at Facebook or Twitter - ever, not even once!), I've never played an MMO etc etc. I'm kind of the exact opposite end of the scale from the guy being dead in front of WoW, I guess. This isn't about justifcation or validation - I play as much as I care to, and I'm satisfied that it isn't too much. My way of life works for me, but would be unthinkable for the next man, and there's nothing wrong with that. It takes all kinds to make a world and all that.

As the classic line goes: 'To Thine Own Self, Be True'.

Hey, i'm back to the shrine since last week.

I'm doing my run through the Shin Megami Tensei doing my absence.

Finished P3P first. Great game. Loved the Ending and it's storyline and some of it's social links threads.

Started The Answer from FES. Disgusted on how continued the story (Aigis in the Velvet Room WTF). So I decided to not to play it, even gameplay wise is a disgrace.

Finished Shin Megami Tensei III Nocturne with the True Demon Ending. Daisojou is so fucking broken man. But still quite amazing game when you manage to get a hold it's mechanics. And highly satisfying. Neutral and True Demon endings got the cake for me. It's currently my favorite game from the Franchise.

Continued my memory from Persona 4. I was nearly on tears after the Heaven dungeon. Only to be utterly pissed off after the reveal of the real culprit. Such a disgrace. Such a waste of oportunity. Such a waste of storyline, the way it threw itself away. It baffles me. It made me wonder if the Japs really know how to write good villains. So yeah, it's pending to be finished but I don't feel like doing it at all... Probably not going too.

Continuing Digital Devil Saga Avatar Tuner right now, I'm at the final battle, which I'm so underleveled that it's giving me a hard the bitch onmyo harihara. I'm going to beat her though. Probably this weekend.

I have a save from Persona 2 IS, great storyline so far (probably the most hooking of the franchise and it's foreshadowing to be the best too.), the gameplay puts me off hard time. So I'm struggling to going through it. But I want to see right through it.

Persona 1 PSP is also another pending. Again it's gameplay puts me a little bit off. But probably going to do it.

Other than that I finished MGS4 for the first time a few months ago. Loved the fanservice and the Act 4, the final battle as well. I chuckled quite a bit to "it's the NANOMACHINES" plot device throughout the game. Almost in tears in the ending. I hated the Zero twist of the storyline. But then again. I'm probably the only person alive who thinks that MGS3 was the worst and a total disgrace to the series, moreso than 2.

Then again, I can keep myself caged thinking that it's storyline started and finished back in the PS1 and be happy with it. Hail Solid fucking Snake. xD

Hi @Revan & @Vrykolas, it's been a while.

I heard Enemy Front is a bit like Far Cry 3, but with Nazis.

Wolfenstein is 40 GIGABYTES of data.
For a 10 hour game.
It'd take me a freaking week to download it, unless I throttle everything else.

You can always pause the download and let your system rest. Which is what I would do.

Still tryin to platinum Rayman Legends. Over 800,000 lums now. It's gonna take even longer to get that final level of Awesomeness, though.

Besides my regular activity on Street Fighter and League of Legends, I've recently finished Trine and I'm currently playing Charlie Murder, a fun little side scrolling brawler.

I did recently try Hotline Miami and intend to get that because it is quite fun. I'm also looking to get my hands on a copy of Vampire Night for the ps2, it was something I really loved playing as a kid and my nostalgia demands that I acquire it!

Took a break from Shin Rorona no Atelier after failing to get true ending, due to missing a few friendship points with one NPC in the middle of the game. It wasn't required in the original Rorona, so I had no idea it was now.
And what did I play instead? Atelier Rorona Plus, haha. I managed to buy it on Thursday, one day before release, at a local game shop, which was pretty incredible considering the game was unavailable everywhere else. I got my platinum an hour ago, so finishing the Japanese version won't be a problem now that I know what was missing. The game's trophies are still not showing up in online mode even though the release date was the 20th.
I'm probably going to finish off the last stuff in Binding of Isaac when I play something next.

The final boss fight was, kind of a letdown.
Not very hard, not very imaginative, and lacked that 'OMG I WON' feeling.

Just finished Catherine. That game is a lot easier than you think its going to be - I'm no master of puzzle games by any stretch of the imagination, but I had little difficulty getting through it. Not that I necessarily would *want* it to be harder, but it did surprise me. Well, suprised me again I should say (I have finished it before, but that was around the time it came out).

Decent game for what it is, enjoyable story, and the sections where you hang out in the bar with Vincent's layabout friends are great fun. Much preferred the ending I got this time, to the one I got the first time round (I got the True Freedom ending, where Vincent decides not to get married, stay single and just enjoy his life by going on a tourism trip - in space!)

Have to say though - playing a puzzle game that requires quick and 3 dimensional thinking in the middle of a crippling heatwave = absence of joy. I was so hot at times that I could barely stay conscious, let alone plan my moves out!

The main reason why 2014 been such a sucky year for me is due to getting back into trophies addiction at this year's start, it has always felt against my character and like I've lost my soul to it and dishonoured myself and wasted time and money *sigh* Which means I neglected my true self this year so no language-learning or Sonic.
There was also another reason but that's off-topic and was more minor and long-term-intermittently-ongoing and is gone now thankfully. And another minor reason was getting scammed at this year's start.

What do you mean by skipping? I'm more concerned with the plot and other things. I can tolerate the fan service if the story is good enough. Without a decent story, characters or setting, I'm finding it hard to suffer through most JRPG's these days.

Speaking of which, I finally completed the story of Final Hallway XIII. I think the game gets more hate than it deserves. I started out disliking the game because the characters got on my nerves, but they grew on me the further I progressed.

I liked the story. There's a good portion of different endings. I find it hard to figure out a favorite ending. As for the skipping, you'll have to see for yourself. The entire game I never had the game once crash on me even with the occasional skipping. It was worse for Disgaea D2.

Star Magician
07-27-2014, 08:47 AM
Oh, do you mean frame-skipping/ frame rate issues? I had the same issue with Disgaea D2. For me, was displayed in 1080p (it looked up-scaled though), which is higher than the average PS3 game. That's might be why it had those issues.
But oh god, the worst frame rates I've ever experienced were Skyrim and Drakengard 3 on the PS3. Drakengard 3 was tolerable, but Skyrim was just out-right terrible in some areas.

Anyway, maybe I'll give Ar Tonelico 3 a try if I can find it at a good price.
Right now, I'm trying to finish Disgaea on the DS before I do a story reset on DD2. I'm also in the middle of Lost Kingdoms, Shining Force II and The Guided Fate Paradox.

Yeah, Xillia was alright, but it did suffer from a few problems endemic to the Tales series (combat is fun but pretty mindless button mashing, the game lacks consistent villains and it feels like there is a revolving door of opponents who have their 15 minutes of fame then die, before the game seemingly randomly settles on a final opponent - that in particular is a staple of the Tales series IMO).

Like I said, I thought it was one of the best of the series (just behind Vesperia for me). I would just for once like some more consistency in the villains. Establish some villains and stick with them and develop them. The Tales series rarely offers this, constantly pulling out new factions and masterminds, only to quickly dispatch them and move onto someone else new. It keeps things moving and it keeps you on your toes, but there's something to said for having a stable set of villains who get a proper amount of time to flourish and really demonstrate why they are so dastardly that you must beat them. In Dragon Age Origins (for example) you knew the Darkspawn and Archdemon were your enemies, and that didn't change. They didn't get replaced with new enemies halfway through, or you didn't have sections where you were friends with them now (well, unless you count Awakening I guess...) before the game pulls a last minute 'Oh wait... actually we *will* have you fight them after all... probably'.

This is something that is less noticeable if you haven't played multiple Tales games, I guess. Part of me thinks 'Well, its always this way so that's how the Tales guys like to make their games'. And Vesperia arguably does it even more than this game, and that's my favourite Tales game! I'm just of the mind that a really satisfying story, a really epic adventure should set up its villains early and develop them over the course of the game, so when you finally do take them out, it feels appropriately important. This revolving door 'Big Bad of the Week' approach, doesn't do it for me. Nachtigal - done, Gilland - done, Exodus - done, Chimeriad - done, Maxwell - done. And plots like the Otherworld reactor plan and pretty much everything to do with Elympios just seeming to be abandoned, despite its huge potential.

But hey, I guess that's what the sequel is for, hey? It was a good game - I just don't think it was the great game that it could have been (and it wasn't far off IMO).

I see the Resident Evil Gamecube remake is being re-released on all the current consoles. Typical - yet another game that I slaved away on back in the day, completing on its hardest settings (Real Survivor, Invisible enemy mode etc etc) for nothing but sheer love of the game. And now they'll release them on consoles that will give achievements for those things, tempting me to torture myself all over again. First it was Halo: Combat Evolved Legendary playthrough on the original Xbox, now this... All that time and effort.

It feels like... like premature ejaculation. Er, but with games... oh, but not *those* type of games! Ahem...

Anyway, it could just be the games drought delirium, but I probably will buy it again - even though I still own it. Its one of my favourite ever games, so I guess the excuse to play it again and earn some trophies is worth it. And there's always the faint hope that if it makes enough money, Capcom will have the wacky notion of making a new Resident Evil game that is actually a survival horror. Then again, who knows what goes through their minds - for all we know they'll make the next one into a racing game, or a rhythm action game. I've given up trying to guess their logic long ago.

No, I haven't. People say nice things about it, so I've been mulling it over. The only things that have stopped me are some troubling stories of a very repetitive and badly thought out final Act, and the fact that the art style really isn't my thing (I'm sure I'd get over it if I started playing though).

I guess the biggest problem is that the reason everyone seems to love it, is because its apparently very old school and feels like an old Square game. But though I did like older JRPGs, I don't really class myself as a fan of the really old style of JRPGs. (Final Fantasy 7, 8 etc aside, I'm more of a PS2 era JRPG fan, than the old Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger style - great games to be sure, but never really as interesting to me personally as later games).

So... I don't know - it is one of the games I've been looking at. Frankly I'm so starved for games, that I'm willing to give anything a shot at this point! I assume that you recommend it, given the 'I liked it so much, I put my *name* on it!' :D

In the middle of Tales of Graces ƒ. I'm at Kurt's boss battle right now. Giving the game a rest because he completely destroyed me. >.< I'm not really a huge Tales vet, but I'm trying to beat the game on moderate difficulty instead of the default. I'm making progress I guess, it's just that there are a lot of snags along the way, such as this ridiculous difficulty spike/boss battle. That's one thing I really don't like about this game. The boss prior to this one was pathetically easy for some reason, and I didn't grind before it or anything. For this one, I'll certainly have to...

If it helps, Kurt gave me some trouble too. I didn't die outright, but he gave me a real scare, especially because *nothing* was giving my guys trouble by that time.

I learned a long time ago that you should grind, grind, grind in Tales games, as much and as often as you can in the early stages. The games always have a few outrageous difficulty spikes, so it pays to get your party well ahead of the curve. Level up steadily, never ever refuse a fight, and bide your time until you find a fairly challenging dungeon, then go out and mine it for EXP for as long as you can possibly stand to do it. A bit of pain and effort grinding for levels in the right areas, pays huge rewards down the line in those games (because it also gives you lots of loot, cash etc to keep up on weapons and other gear).

Kurt and the final boss were the only ones in the main game who gave me a scare. Basically, you've nothing to be ashamed about, because he is definitely one of the toughest people in the game. He isn't indicative of the game getting harder - he's just unusually tough.

Yeah, I'm learning that, lol. However, no matter what game I'm playing, I try to avoid grinding wherever possible, just to keep the gameplay interesting. I hate getting to bosses only to find that I wipe the floor with them because my stats are higher than normal. It makes the game boring. On the other hand, if there's required grinding, that's a design flaw, in my opinion. Can't say it in this case though, since it was my own damn fault for choosing moderate difficulty. Lol...

Xenoblade Chronicles really pushed my limit in this regard too. If the plot wasn't as interesting as it was, I probably would have never finished it.

Right now, I'm also trying to unlock all the endings on Disgaea D2. This game may very well be my first platinum trophy...

Well, I agree that JRPGs are at their best when the combat is challenging enough that you don't just steamroller the enemies. The problem is knowing what level you should be at to achieve that. If you can keep yourself in that sweet spot of being not too weak and not too powerful, then you get the chance to fully explore a game's items, skills, formations, whatever to pull off wins that show you understand the technical aspects of the game. But difficulty spikes ruin that, coming out of nowhere to give battles where their attacks are just so powerful that you can barely survive at all, when the surrounding battles haven't been anywhere near as hard.

I still remember playing Star Ocean: Til the End of Time. Gently progressing with no real problems, enjoying the story and exploration, not grinding excessively. And I was happy as a clam - until I got to the Urssa Lava Caves. The whole dungeon was a difficulty spike in its own right, but just to get in there, you had to beat this utter bastard of a boss called Robin Wind. The little sod was so much harder than anything I'd faced to that point, and it was a rude awakening to be sure. Plus as anyone who has played SMT: Nocturne will tell you, the battle against Matador is truly infamous.

So over the years, I've learned that its best to just bury my feelings and take the EXP when i can get it. Because meeting a tough boss, and realising that you *must* do some grinding is a real pain. Doing grinding at you own pace during the story, before you feel you must do it, makes the pill a little easier to swallow IMO.

Star Ocean TTEOT is a great game, but its no easy ride, that's for sure. If you get the guide and work out how to make the most of the item crafting, then you can break the game pretty early on. Without that though, the game remains fairly challenging throughout. Worth another look though, I'd say - one of the best JRPGs I've played IMO.

Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed on Wii U. I have a weakness for Kart racing games, and this is a pretty good one.

I too played that recently, and I have to say, it's probably the best racing game I've ever played, pretty neck-and-neck with Mario Kart Double Dash for me. It would be better than MKDD by a looong shot if not for that annoying friggen announcer. "BLOWFISH! BLOWFISH! BLOWFISH!" What's worse is that you can't turn him off without turning off character voices! Stupid!

Anyway, right now, I'm giving Tales of Graces a break because it's really aggravating, tedious and the story is just getting worse the farther I progress. I had to play through Journey to ease my rage, and it really worked! Journey was amazing! But too short...

I started playing Kingdoms of Amalur after that, and I'm HOOKED. I've logged in several 6-16 hour sessions already, and I only started it on like Friday. However, it's showing its tedium after 40 hours already. A lot of the game and literally all of the characters are pretty forgettable unfortunately(except maybe Alyn Shir. You know why... Just sayin'), but the battle at Mel Senshir was pretty sweet.

Vrykolas

Graces has IMO the worst story of any of the Tales games I've played. The combat is probably the best of the series though, so it does have that going for it at least. But other than that, the story sucks and the character's are mostly pretty weak (compared to how good characters in this series often are). I really loved Pascal, and Hubert (is that his name - can't remember) has some hilarious gags that poke fun at his super serious nature (such as him striking a victory pose, twirling his weapon extravagantly and heroically bellowing 'Every last Gald we earn goes straight into the equipment budget!' Always make me laugh.

But yeah, not one my favorites. Still, Xillia-2 is out tomorrow, so I'll take a look at that. I also bought Dark Souls 2 earlier in the week, but I haven't played it yet. I though about playing all the Souls games back to back (Demon's Souls first, then both Dark Souls games).

On reflection though... I don't think so! :D

I have to be honest, I'm not all that fond of the Tales' series combat systems. Combat is not really something that drives me through any RPG. While I can see Graces' merits in that regard, I just don't like it enough to have to do it hundreds upon hundreds of times just to see the final moments of the game. I had the same problem with Abyss and Xillia too - halfway through the game, I'm burnt out, and I haven't beaten Symphonia for the same reason. Even with other games like FFXII, FFXIII, Xenoblade Chronicles, Ni No Kuni (which I haven't even gotten that far yet), The Last Story, Kingdom Hearts II, and I'm even now starting to feel that way with Kingdoms of Amalur, repetitive battling just drags me down. One of my favorite RPG's, Golden Sun (and the second one especially), may have annoying random battles, but grinding is completely unnecessary because of how they balanced the whole game, and most of the challenge actually came rrom creative puzzle-solving. I guess I wish that there were more RPG's and adventure games that didn't require so much time battling and had more than that to offer.

Edit: Finally made it to Alabastra on Kingdoms of Amalur. I kinda rushed to the end once I got there, so I just finished the main quest line.
What to play next...

I don't think I've ever, on purpose, gotten a platinum on any game.
I mean, I've come damn close, but not because I was 'trophy hunting' or whatever it's called.

That's exactly my feeling on combat in RPGs of all kinds - my comment on Graces was simply that out of the various Tales' battle systems, it has the best one. There are very few RPGs that I would play for the gameplay - the story and characters are what matter.

And on the subject of Platinum trophies, I must say that I have very few of them. I don't mind a bit of trophy hunting on games I really like. And I have deliberately sought out the Platinum on a few, but generally the amount of work involved makes it seem an extremely thankless task. Particularly on RPGs, where some of them will be 'Collect *every* item, kill *every* enemy, open absolutely *every* chest, reach level 99,999 with all your character etc etc.

I'm a patient man, but there are limits! :D

So I did in fact decide to go and replay Demon's Souls, with a view to playing all 3 games back to back. I steeled myself for battle, then got stuck into Demon's Souls. But then I made a tragic mistake - I picked a Mage character.

See. I've only played Demon's Souls and Dark Souls once each. I completed them both and loved them both, but my characters in the games were essentially identical. I took a pretty standard 'Knight with Sword and Shield' and stuck with it throughout both games. No magic (a few miracles for stat buffs in Demon's Souls, but I never used them), no bows - just Sword and Board. So this time, I thought I should try something else, mix it up a bit. My first thought was to make a hulking Greatsword wielding bezerker of a man (and oh how I wish I'd done that now). But I decided I needed a clean break - lightly armored (if indeed I had any at all), focus on mobility and ranged attacks. So that left me looking at some kind of ranger or sorceror. Being a bit of a closet caster, I decided to give the Mage a go.

But man... what a blunder! I still love this game, the atmosphere is so great and menacing, and for a while I was feeling extra vulnerable due to not having my customary layers of heavy armor and oceans of hit points. But then I realized that the spells I had were absolutely incredible - long range, lock on ability so you hardly ever miss, high damage (for the time of game). I found I was breezing effortlessly through the game, and its only continued in that vein. I don't have to bother learning enemy attack patterns, find windows of opportunity, learn weapon timing etc - just point and blast. Its the most boring thing I've ever played in my life!

And so, I've been stuck in this rut of 'Do I really want to go back and change it, now I'm 20+ hours in?' against the other argument of 'This is less fun than sticking your head in a bucket of acid'. I think I'm going to have to knock this one on the head, and start again with my Greatsword idea. I can't believe that I waited this long to get back into Demon's Souls - a game I absolutely love to pieces, and is one of my favorite games of the last gen - and I've messed it up so disastrously that I can't stand to even look at it, let alone play it.

2014 in video gaming - the year when the fun never started.

Astebreed:
A surprisingly good shoot-em-up for the PC, with a fairly odd story...even for an 'anime type' game.

Beyond Space:
First person shooter in space, think Wing Commander but not as deep, for PC/phone.
It's not the hardest game out there, but it's pretty enough and fun.

Star Wars Empire At War - Forces of Corruption:
I was only able to get this game working properly on my new Win8.1 PC, despite having a WinXP PC that was textbook level for its hardware/software needs. Anyways.
Still, after half a decade or whatever, it's a pretty fun game.
The ground stuff isn't as fun as the space stuff, but both are fun enough that I'm actually going though EACH map to beat.
-Warning: The AI cheats, I don't know how, but the AI cheats.

A Story About My Uncle:
It's like the world of Myst went underground, with the game play of a first person Spider-Man, but based on puzzles not combat.
It's...it's just AMAZING.
Worth far more than what I paid for it.

A Walk In The Dark:
You play as a cat trying to save its owner...yeah, it's one of THOSE games.
It's got that 'dark and foreboding' feel of Limbo, but not nearly as hard which is a good thing.

My Souls series adventures continue, and I'm on Dark Souls now (I did in fact persevere with my Demon's Souls, as I'd spent much of last week arguing that people should try and finish games more often, so it felt a bit hypocritical to give in myself on the very next game I played!) Anyway, it was ridiculously easy all the way through because magic is so broken in Demon's Souls. False King Allant still gave me a bit of a beatdown, but otherwise I rolled the game's bosses with no problems. Firestorm was killing most of them in 1 or 2 castings!

Making steady progress through Dark Souls as a light armor sword and shield + Longbow jobber. Its quite fun, and I'm enjoying being a melee fighter again. Still prefer heavy armor characters with spears and halberds, but this'll do. First time I played the game, I had such a hard time with the Bell Gargoyles, but I rolled them first try this time out (with the aid of Sun Bro Solaire). Mostly, the going's been pretty easy, but Chaos Witch Quelaag kicked my ass a few times. Finished Danganronpa 2. Great game, better cast of characters this time and some good cases, although it was usually obvious what had happened and who did it. The overall story wasn't as good though, feeling like more of a side story that barely advanced the overarching story of the Danganronpa setting at all.

So it was a good time, basically. Funny, intense, moving and really pretty dark at times (some of the things that get discussed in the final chapter were extremely unsettling). Overall, I thought it was better than the first game, but I still think they have a better game in them. Nevertheless, this is probably my Game of the Year so far (but it has been a very slow year, so take that however you will...)

I hated the Tower of Latria. The part where you're soooooo high up was nerve racking. :c

The Tower of Latria is a bit intimidating because its all high walkways and pitch black background, but it was a lot easier for me this time because Soul Arrow/Soul Ray allowed me to snipe the Gargoyles as they flapped about in the air. No having them swipe at you and knock you off the walkways = gravy!

As for Quelaag.. I just couldn't seem to do much damage to her. My +5 Divine Balder Side Sword has been mighty fine so far, but even wielding it 2 handed, I was doing miserable damage to her. I could chip away at her, and I had most of her attacks down but it was taking so long that she'd eventually catch me with that AOE magic attack and that *destroyed* me. I got her so close one time, only to accidentally roll into some lava... My screams of lamentation were heard several counties away, I should think!

Finally gave in and used some Humanity to reverse hollowing, hoping Solaire or Lautrec would be about to summon. Got jumped by Maneater Mildred's Black Phantom on the way there (which was doubly alarming as I play offline!) but then rejoiced when I saw she could be summoned a White Phantom. Things like this make the pain worthwhile - truly awesome series. And the cutscene where Sen's Fortress opens is one of my favorites - it just looks so beautiful when the camera switches to inside the entrance hall, and you see the sunlight sparkling in as the gate opens. (Then you actually go into Sen's Fortress, and immediately get completely and utterly killed by the ferocious monsters and traps).

Good times, good times... :D

I "fell in love" with the Tower of Latria since my first time (it only loses to Shrine of Storms). Used to be very afraid of the gargoyles but now I past run them. But, yes, once and a while I fall deep in the pits and get whacked by one or two Octopus Man (even the Celebrity Vermin killed me once...) :)

For me, Boletarian Palace is by far the best of the Demon's Souls worlds. It looks the best with its castle city feel, and there's a strong narrative that incorporates all the bosses, but also the various NPCs like Biorr, Yuria, Ostrava and Miralda etc. I don't feel like the other worlds had quite the same focus. Tower of Latria and Valley of Defilement had some ongoing story, but not to the extent that the palace did. I would have liked to have seen the Golden Elder appear at the start of 3-2 in the cutscene and maybe throws some spells at you - kind of like how Seath the Scaleless has an intro encounter.

I should say that I felt like a real heel this time after finishing the game. I'd been a nice guy throughout the game, killing the bad NPCs and saving the good ones. But I realized that I hadn't seen the Evil Ending, as I chose the Good ending first time round. So I was idly throwing around the idea of killing the Maiden, but wasn't sure how to justify it from a roleplaying point of view. But then Sage Freke stopped me just before I went to the final area and advised me to kill the Maiden, because if she put the Old One to sleep, then magicians like me and him would lose all our Soul Magic powers. So that settled that - I killed her and got the Evil Ending.

And then I felt *terrible*! I mean, your character literally stomps her dead face into the ground and tramples over her in his lust for the Demon's Souls calling out to him. It was incredibly disturbing. But of course you can't just reload in Demon's Souls, so I was stuck with being a heartless monster. I'm making amends in my Dark Souls playthough - I'm a really nice guy in that game! :D

Whilst I tend to favor nice guy characters, I'm not above playing Evil character. But Assassins really aren't my thing. I never got the appeal of characters like these (and Thieves, Pirates, Ninjas etc - doesn't do anything for me). My brand of evil characters tend to be more the utterly crazed, Elder God/Extradimensional Being/Demonic worshipping, cannibalistic, self-mutilating, innocent-sacrificing crackpots. I mean if you're to be evil, you may as well be a real nutcase, right? :D

But its rare for me to play such characters as any kind of canon playthough, or one that I seriously care about. I'm usually always hovering somewhere between 'generally nice but here to make money' and 'Really nice guy who will take tough decisions if he has to'. So I'm usually some variety of neutral, tending towards Good rather than Evil. (What can I say - I just want to be Doctor Who!)

Edit: And you even like RE6, Franz! How are we not best friends?! :D

On 3DS: Shin Megami Tensei IV, I think I'm about 1/2 way done with it. At some point after I reached Shibuya I got a glitch where I looked like I was moving around underground instead of on the map and then the screen went black (not even the map screen was there, only the HUD was still visible), that occurred after I went to a demon instance map and beat the demon, then left, then headed back to Shibuya (to heal), and then when I reached shibuya that happened.

Guys, forget games - clearly what we should be doing is buying one of those solid gold PS4s they're selling in the Arab Emirates. Only 8,500 quid - a steal really... Oh to be one of the 1%, eh?

Anyway, given that there still isn't anything I want to play out, I'm about ready to write this year off for original releases. Instead, I'm turning my attention to what next (or current I suppose) gen console to buy. Not sure I'm ready to jump just yet, but I'm starting to think about it at least. At the moment I'm torn - the PS4 looks like the safer bet with the better lineup, but I'm pretty sure that I want the Xbox 1 more. It just seems more appealing for some reason, and it does have the Halo games coming soon.

I'll repair to my meditation chamber and muse on it some more - (my solid gold meditation chamber of course).

How are you finding it? Personally, I felt it was the weakest of the series (even Rhapsodia which tied into Suiko IV was marginally better, and I love SRPG's)... but thankfully Suikoden V came along. Hope Konami makes another in the series soon.

On topic: Got bored of Destiny... I really can't understand the appeal so many have for it and fell for the hype. So, gone back to GTA Online on Xbox 360 and Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate on PS4 (though I might fire up Watch_Dogs as the new DLC for season pass holders is out today apparently).

I really enjoy it. The sailing bit gets boring, but gets much less time-consuming thanks to you-know-who later on. Some of the mini-games are very enjoyable, too. It was my 2nd Suikoden game I first played (Tactics being the first).

I've finished Suiko IV... while it does pick up a bit, compared to the others it's still weaker. Suiko 1 and II are my personal favorites, specially the second. The minigames in it were awesome. If you can, I strongly suggest looking for the earlier ones and giving them a shot.

In terms of gameplay, not the third one. It's a bit different from the rest of them. The rest of em have the same battle system, only IV has 4 characters per party rather than 6. Good candidates are both the first and the fifth one.

I modded the hell out of FF8 for PC.
^_^

Looks, and sounds, a LOT better than the original PC port or the original PS1 version.

There's the option to only replace the MIDI with the PS1 music, or you can replace the songs with various stuff from The Black Mages and other 'official', better sounding, remakes.

The peep(s) behind it went though a LOT of trouble to replace all the loops all proper like.

Fucking.Fantastic.

Even got the GCI stuff replace with BETTER looking versions.

Plus two graphical upgrades.
One that smooths out/fixes the majority of character and static world models.
Plus another that fixes stuff like the text, Triple Triad, and the pictures for most of the stuff.

Dark Souls 2.

I'm flip-flopping between really enjoying and merely enduring this one. It certainly doesn't have quite the same special magic about it that made the first 2 games, but it has it moments. Drangleic is mostly a pretty dull and uninspiring setting, the locations having almost no narrative and occasionally with bosses that feel completely out of place for the area (this is particularly the case in the optional side areas). Neither do the various locations seem to connect to each other in anything like an organic way. Add in that the NPCs are a pretty forgettable bunch (there's been no real standouts for me so far, but Gavlan is pretty funny), and well... its all quite disappointing really.

Except that like I said, it does have its moments when you think 'Ahh - now that's more like it!' Seeing the ship make its ghostly entrance in No-Man's Wharf was awesome (and enlivened an otherwise awful level). The Executioner's Chariot was fantastic, and felt like something out of Fighting Fantasy, which From Software have been quoted as saying they used as inspiration for these games. Really enjoyed smashing the crap out of those Ruin Sentinels as well - I knew keeping a strike weapon handy would pay off! They looked really cool though, all spindly and jerky like the Thin Men from X-COM: Enemy Unknown.

Mostly though, the game feels like its treading water rather than treading new ground. Hopefully Bloodborne will show the way forward, because although there are a few interesting changes here and there, Dark Souls 2 does have a 'going through the motions' feel. Its laudable that they made the game so long, but perhaps that just illustrates that unless you have an enormous budget to do justice to all the areas, it might be best to go for a less is more approach. Because there's a lot of really drab, underdesigned levels, recycled assets and (even by the series standards) rather scarce amount of interesting lore and truly iconic baddies. The Pursuer in particular feels like a tragically wasted opportunity, and could have been great as a recurring 'Nemesis' style enemy chasing you throughout the game in awkward locations.

So basically, it could have been worse, but it should have been better.

Forget what I said about this being a long game - its a *really* long game! I feel like I've killed about 70,000 bosses and depopulated an area the size of Africa. I even joined the Brotherhood of Blood covenant, because I figured my guy had to be permanently drenched from head to toe in blood by now. No amount of scrubbing will get that off!
