I just got the BigGoron Sword. On my way to bust down Ganon' s door in Ocarina of Time 3D. Looks like I'm about finished with this game.
For the record, I didn't do a whole of backtracking in the Water Dungeon, in either playthrough. I suppose I got the right items at the right times.
None of the dungeons in OoT compare to the difficulty of either of the NES titles, so none of the newer titles really phase me that much.
It's not a difficulty issue with the water temple, it's just annoying.
the NES Zeldas were only hard because of random stuff with no guidance. Many secrets are literally impossible to find by any method other than trial and error. There's a reason that approach has been abandoned, as amazing as Zelda 1 was it was not very fun to walk around trying to burn every single bush in the game hoping you'd get somewhere and then finding it's just another guy who gives you 40 rupees you don't need.
although zelda 2's combat was actually hard too sometimes if I remember right. I never finished it because I couldn't find the next dungeon at some point and didn't like it enough to look it up. Still it was not that brutal by NES standards. Doesn't even approach battletoads.

I never had that third problem.
So I completed The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D at 98% completion. I collected everything but the Gold Skulltulas. I got just enough to get all the important items. Forget that massive Rupee worth 500. I don't even see that as an important quest. I got that last bottle, though.

Shadows of the Damned. Well, technically, I just finished it.
I cannot believe how much Akira Yamaoka phoned it in. The whole thing sounds like a poor man's Silent Hill and it doesn't even fit the tone of the game. All the trailers had this music that made it sound like this heavy metal soundtrack, which the game doesn't even have (and desperately needs). The actual game is pretty underwhelming too... I expected more I suppose.

Zelda II: Adventure of Link was the black sheep (they say). Not all of them are like that, thankfully! Most Zelda fans will agree Zelda II is the hardest of the series. If you die, you start from the beginning area–regardless of how many hours you've just exhausted to progress through endless treachery. I remember it was a real change from playing the original; suddenly you're thrust into a whole new playing field where they've really upped the ante a notch or ten :-/ IMO, the best Zelda to start with is A Link to the Past, then the original, then Zelda II (unless you don't have the patience for hard games; in that case, I'd advise you steer clear of it entirely!). That's the chronological order anyway. :)

He'd made it sound like he hadn't. Though I'd venture and say that Ocarina of Time is the better of the games to start. In fact, I'd go so far to say that the 3DS version is probably best for anyone wanting to start their first Zelda title. The NES titles should be saved for last, simply because they are indeed the hardest of them all. I also highly suggest staying away from Sword of Gamalon or Zelda's Adventure. Just saying.
Moving on. I've been playing this recently:
This game is so open-ended and non-linear it's crazy. I don't even know what I'm doing half the time. They throw you into world known simply as 'Dead Side' with an objective to collect Dark Souls to prevent the 'Five' (a host of murderers and psychopaths) from amassing an undead army to bring on the Apocalypse. The premise is intriguing thus far, but once you get to Dead Side, there's no real direction. You run around killing creatures till you run into a dead end. You turn around, and find another path, which in turn, turns out to be another dead end. So move onto the other area. Another dead end.
Collecting Dark Souls allows you access to more areas of the game, expanding it even further. I've managed to come across an upgrade that allows me to grab onto ledges with fire which opens up yet more areas.
I've also collected some weapons and a piece of an artifact, that when completed, will allow me to use Dead Side powers Live Side (the real world). Apparently those are hidden even deeper in Dead Side.
I'm enjoying it so far, but a little direction here and there would be nice. Right now I'm just aimlessly wandering around a dead wasteland filled with creatures that would like to kill me.

Maxx:
Good choice in Shadowman - now that was a great game. One of the hardest games I've ever played too, which is crazy really, considering you can't actually die! But seriously, the level of mental agony you have to endure to get all the bits and bobs on some of the levels (the ones with lava particularly), nearly killed in real life! I mean, it really drove me *insane* at times...
And hell, that game is seriously disturbed too, but well... that's great, isn't it?
My only real issue with it was that there is no real point to playing as Liveside Mike LeRoi. He can't hurt the bosses (at all) in this form, he's weaker and doesn't have Shadowman's abilities. Its a real shame, because the levels where the bosses are hanging out, are so much more exciting if you play as Mike (because they know you can't hurt them, so they hunt you through the levels, toying with you etc).
An awesome experience, even if the controls and graphics were unremarkable. Shame the sequel was one of the worst games ever.
Maxx Skywalker
07-19-2011, 06:22 AM
Yeah, it was a joy kill when I found out that I couldn't do squat against the bosses as normal Mike. What? What's the point of me even being here? I have to go and gather more artifacts to even be able to touch them? That's a bunch of BS if you ask me. Fun BS no less. As much as I'm complaining about this game, it's really not bad at all. The platforming elements are engaging enough to keep me going for the next Dark Soul, as they are tucked away in the hardest to reach places. Teasing you from a distance.
My eyes are burning from playing it on an HD TV though. I think I spent a good four hours on it today, and my eyes are hating me for it.

This game has the worst achievements I've ever seen though. I've put around 18 hours into the game so far and that's got me around 190 points from 16 achievements or something. Those are just the easy achievements, really. Most require you to do insane things, like one that has you basically play through the game 14 and a half times. Considering I'm not all that far from unlocking most of the content in the game, I can't see myself sticking with the game long enough to do that. Apparently only a few people have completed the game 100 percent, even now.

Is there some kind of big differance between idiocy and stupidity that you seperate them? And I know its hard to understand, but IMO means 'In My Opinion' - obscure I know, how could you possibly have known what it meant...
Grow up, friend. If you have a defence to make of LA Noire, then do it, instead of wasting everybody's time.
LA Noire is a decent game that I enjoyed for what it was, but nothing more. Police Quest is a proper police simulator, whereas LA Noire is just a 3D version of Ace Attorney Investigations with some shoot-outs and (many, many) chase sequences. Same investigation and interrogation controls, same plot structure (1: Tutorial, 2: First proper case where you meet key characters, 3: case unrelated to main story to fill out your character's CV, 4: game changing scenario and big revelations, 5: final resolution of plot threads).
Not that the structure is as well executed as in the AA games. LA Noire's main story doesn't even start until Chapter 4 of 5, which would be fine if the opening chapters were spent exploring the characters - but they aren't.
The cases are insanely repetitive, the storytelling lazy and terribly paced (the Homicide desk chapter in particular is one of the most mis-conceived ideas I have ever seen). And considering the game is allegedly supposed to be Film Noir, it is nothing of the sort. The ending introduces a character who actually is does fit the Film Noir template, and who actually does have a spine.
And the constant holding back of information, time skips to avoid explanation of arrests which don't make any sense at all, and railroading of choosing which suspects to arrest in the first place, is criminal... Its like 'Why even pretend this game allows you to do detective work, when the story just plays itself out regardless?'
You don't even get punished for being a bad detective and missing clues, or messing up interrogations! The game just says 'Never mind, it was this guy - go arrest him!' So you get a lower star rating - big frickin deal. I'm sure real life cops wish it was this easy...
If they trimmed down the absurdly overlong Homicide desk, tightened up the storytelling and gave us some more reasons to care about the impossibly stiff Cole Phelps at all, then LA Noire would have been much better IMO. More depth in terms of story and investigation methodology would have been nice too, but that's never going to happen these days.
Anyway, I'm currently playing Portal 2.

Vrykolas
08-09-2011, 12:32 AM
And let's be fair, I'm not blind - nostalgia is a factor for me here, of course.
I'm not saying that LA Noire is just rubbish (its a perfectly acceptable experience) and I'm not saying that Police Quest was amazing in every single way. I'm just saying that as a game where you play as a copper and later as a detective, I found PQ the superior experience. (But like all old games, you have to take them for the experience they offered, given the technology they had available - if Police Quest was remade now with today's tech, then that would really be something).
Pacing is my real issue with LA:N, as I mentioned before. I just think the game shoots itself in the foot big time with that Homicide desk section. If the cases were going to be set up like that, I'd want to see Cole investigating on his own time, visiting the guys who are getting locked up, doing some digging to try and understand what's really going on etc.
If we'd just seen some more fight from Cole over what was happening, instead of ineffectual bitching to his partner, and seen how it was stressing him out etc, it would have been great. But we get none of that, so it just feels like a massive cheat, with the writers deliberately keeping us (and Cole) from asking the obvious questions etc.
It may suit his character to back down to his superiors, but they drag it out too far. There's only so much of that cop-out (no pun intended) attitude I can take from my Hero, especially when he's preaching the Gospel according to Cole Phelps to his (really not very corrupt at all) colleagues. Some people complain about the ending, but I was overjoyed to finally have some backbone in my hero.
But hey, I'm glad you're enjoying it. I do think its a decent game; its just not anywhere near the game I was hoping it would be.

The games that followed (Police Quest: Open Season and the SWAT series) are abominations - if you know of any copies in circulation, back away slowly and report them to the police bomb squad immediately. You just can't be too careful with such toxic material.

Nothing wrong with liking JRPG's over WRPG's... at least you've given them a shot, which is something not a lot would. I used to play JRPG's whenever I could get my hands on them... but now (being the old bastard I am), I've fallen out of touch with them. Not sure if you have a 360 but I highly recommend giving Lost Odyssey a try. It may be slow in the beginning (I think the first town and a little after but when you know you're way around it won't take that long at all). The only JRPG's I used to play before picking this up was the usual Final Fantasy games (except XI and XIII) so it was a while and this game I found refreshing after those WRPGs. Some may not like the turn-based battle system but that was the first system I got used to when I started playing JRPGs with FFVII and VIII.
As for my list:
Final Fantasy VIII (PSP)
Halo 2 (Xbox/360) online using XBC
CoD Black Ops (360)
UMK3 (360)
Halo Reach (360)
Spending most of my time playing FFVIII and when my buddies are online then it alternates with either CoD, Halo, or both (because there's nothing really else to play that we all have).

Not sure if you have a 360 but I highly recommend giving Lost Odyssey a try. I wasn't that fussed with Lost Odyssesy either, and couldn't bring myself to finish it the first time. But I eventually came back to it more than a year later, when I was doing a sweep of my collection, making sure I'd completed everything I own.
Whilst I wouldn't say it was one of the better JRPGs I've played, I suppose it is better than I originally thought. The game gets into a pretty good groove on Disc 3, and it manages to wrap things up fairly well in the end. Basically, the second half of the game is much better than the first half - something is usually the other way round in JRPGs, in my experience.

It's actually not horrible. Just a watered down top down hack and slash RPG for little kids. The Story takes place right after season 1 about a new machinist that the Fire Nation is using to make war machines for but because season 2 hadn't been fully made yet there are a bunch of things that are kinda off like Zuko still hunting you with a full Fire Nation battalion, Omahsu being the capitol of the Earth Kingdom and not Ba Sing Se, Horu is you're earthbender, no Toph, and so far no Uncle.
All the characters are voiced by their original actor and the script ranges form kinda dumb to pretty funny.
The animation on the other hand is kinda.... off. It looks like a "Chop Kick Panda" or "Ratatoing" to Last Airbender but it's the real character designs and the actual voices. Luckily there's only a few animations like that between levels.
The game play itself is a basic run around killing things to gain experience and get stronger moves while finding better equipment. 1 button for attacking, 1 for blocking, hold down a shoulder button and the 4 face buttons are used for your special attacks. No jump button though.
I do have to say that this game does what I've never seen any other game do. Something that should be in most if not all games in this style.
The ability to take out the skill points and move them around and play with your powers and abilities with no penalty. It's supper fun to be able to experiment with different combinations of powers and not have to worry that you invested all your best shit on something you're never going to use or that will become obsolete by the next world.
Also this game is for the most part pretty easy. Your life auto restores very fast along with your Chi and once you have all 4 guys going there's never a need to heal.
But on the other hand the menu navigation is both easy and complicated and the map is just a big overworld map with no fine street and path details plus zero markers for things like shops, saves, or quest objectives. You get green arrows pointing in the general direction but no way to know what to go to first. it's also far too easy to finish the main quest and move onto the next area before finishing the side quests.
Worst thing about it; 4 characters who are best buds fighting side by side and it's 1 player only, no multi player.

No, it's still pretty bad. It still has a lot of lag issues, you're still running around on large empty fields for quests and there's still no auction house. There are a lot of large posts on the official forums from people who have played from the start who are saying the game has improved but not enough to make it a good game.
Opinions of 14 were never mixed, really. They were pretty much always largely negative.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
This is a huge time waster.
I was just going to do a few missions and maybe bring a taxi back to home base so I could do fairs and stuff but I found a few new tags, then I acidentaly clipped a police bike after being slammed into while backing up and had to drive off and hide. After Hiding I got lost and ended up on the highway and while changing lanes got slammed into the next lane but the cars just kept coming and piling up while they banged into each other. eventually they started to explode and everyone was dying but that meant they dropped money and weapons but when I went to get the goods I got set on fire but stop drop and roll works but because I had to equip a gun to do the roll the police came after me and I shot them and then shot a car gas tank which brought more police, and ambulance and a fire truck but no one could rescue or arrest anyone because the firetruck was hosing everyone down and knocking them to the ground. I ended up having to walk to the country part to the north and took a truck back into town but as I was heading home to safe and quit I found the Pimpmobile and got enough tricks done to pass 10,000. I would have gotten more but one of the john's was hurting my ho and me and her engaged him in fisticufs but this part always happens in one of the densely populated areas so while I was waiting for her to get in a cop just pulled me out and I lost all my guns. So I was headed back home when the Grapasaurus Rex Gang started to shot me and I had to take the long way home. After Saving I drove around and checked out the cheapest houses and went with the one with a garage so I could have a mixture of job cars stored here and there.
Play time 3 hours.

I could dig that. We also need some angels fighting demons, because they're essentially God's army. I don't see why a hack 'n slash in the vein of *gasp* God of War would be a bad idea. Though I really don't see Dante's Inferno as counting as something I'm looking for, as that's more of a journey into Hell rather than using Biblical text as inspiration for a video game. In fact using the Old Testament as a foundation could work really well. You do realize there is quite a bit of violence in the OT, right?
Oh, and I've been playing a ton of Minecraft lately. Not much of anything else as I'm gathering materials to start constructing a couple of skyscrapers to add to my town. Finally got my hands on obsidian and diamonds.

I completed ShadowMan last night. An excellent game. The game was long, if not a little too easy when it came to the bosses, especially Legion. The difficulty came from the lack of direction and leaving you dead ends when you didn't have a particular item to progress further. Probably the most annoying part of the game. Otherwise, I had an excellent time getting through the game. And I absolutely love the reward for getting all the Dark Souls.

Got Deus Ex: HR today but haven't installed it yet. Because Star Ocean 3 and Shadow Hearts are just more appealing atm.
Still playing WoW and FFXIV, also gave Age of Conan a bash, but .....meh. Really getting over MMOs in general at the moment. Here's hoping Guild Wars 2 is as promising as it seems.
Restarted some Half-Life: Opposing Force and Blue Shift. Already beat Blue Shift, so now it's time to kill some Freeman. Wait . . . no! :O

Hey max,you a fan of deathspank or something?
I played the demo and it seemed like fun just because of how funny it could be.
I suppose if I wasn't a fan of the games, I don't think I would have taken the time to make a signature and avatar with DeathSpank prominently displayed in the center of the profile. Just saying.
Lately I have beaten Army Men: Sarge's War (GCN), and then I blasted through S.T.U.N Runner (GCN). It says I get a free T-shirt for beating the game, but alas the offer expired Apr. 1st 1991. I couldn't tell you if that was supposed to be a April Fool's joke or not, but I'd like to get my hands on one of them.
I've also started this:

All my friends who played it told me start on easy otherwise I'd be beaten the shit out of me, and I was!

I've heard mixed opinions about it but I've been a fan of the series since forever, also if I could power through the first 40 hours of FFXIII to play a decent game I think I wont be dissapointed.

I actually thought Mario Kart Wii was pretty good, I finished the Single Player mode properly and my weekend group of friends and I used to multiplayer it quite frequently. And that sports game thing is probably Wii Sports, I assume.
Also, Parasite Eve II was boss.
