Half Life 1 was built on id Tech 2 (the Quake II engine), and the difference in graphics quality is night and day - just because it's based on the same tech, doesn't mean that you can't adjust texture quality or polygon count.

Actually Half Life was built on Valves Goldsource engine which was a heavily modified Quake I engine. So yes you're comparing night and day.

Have you ever compared Unreal Engine games? Big differences sometimes.

It's no secret that Unreal Engines are always being modified and often quite heavily, hence why there's Unreal Engine 2.5, 3.5.

Well, I was going to continue with Breed, as I was putting together a bunch of computer parts that I had laying around to use for a Windows XP based PC, and found that the only motherboard I had (an older one) was not compatible with my case (different sized ports). I need an XP based PC to run Breed, because in Win7, it freezes at the point after the logo animation. So I'm deciding on what game I should play for the PC now, because I don't want to wait till I can get a new motherboard. Breed is just giving me too many problems for what it's worth, and it's not worth that much!!!

I think I'm gonna go with this:

That problem can be easily fixed if you break off the default shield that comes with the case. Many brand-name motherboards sold after 2001 has their own shield that can be fixed onto the case, and many cases come with default shields that can be broken off in case the motherboard ships with a custom one. Irritatingly, those shields tend to go missing during a motherboard upgrade process, but you could live without the shield I guess. At worst, a new one off eBay costs less than a meal at McDonalds.

Hey, how's Mafia II? I'm thinking about getting it.

It depends - it seems like it's one of those games you either love or hate. If you like mob movies like The Godfather, you'll love this game - it captures the feeling of the era perfectly. You can really get lost in the 1940s. For an open world game, it's not very open - there is a linear mission structure, and very very few side missions to speak of. Personally I like this because the linearity means that the story flows better - half of the reason i've never finished GTA4 is because i kept getting sidetracked. That said, i've got a feeling that when I finish it, I won't have any reason to play it again. I'd say that unless you're a completionist, it's probably better as a rental - put aside 20 hours or so for a playthrough though.

Also: 1950s Playboy centrefolds as collectibles. Man, chicks were hotter back before boob jobs and photoshop.

It depends. Many virtualization software has issues with 3D. On one hand, if the games doesn't need OpenGL or newer versions of Direct3D then it will most likely work. Alternatively, some virtualization software has experimental 3D card emulation and has a better chance of running the game flawlessly. But yeah, all things considered it will not run as well as when it's running on XP natively.

Because they have people in spacesuits shooting aliens, which is cool, apparently. And being a multiplayer game that everyone is playing, you have no choice but to buy it yourself, if multiplayer is on your list of things to do, because no one is going to be playing anything else.

Online multiplayer or split-screen?

Online multiplayer isn't as fun imo - it's a very competitive environment, but that's what FPS junkies on Xbox Live want.

Split-screen multiplayer, or even online party multiplayer with real mates, is where the fun is - 4 player split-screen deathmatch in Blood Gulch on Halo 1 pretty much defined by friday nights in high school.

As for single player, it's pretty much the only FPS out these days that is still a run-and-gun; throw yourself into the middle of a firefight, and burn through ammo to survive. It's a refreshing change of pace from Half-Life's ammo conservation and Call of Duty's 'two shots and you're dead' system - not better, just different. Going up against two hunters (big, brutish, one-shot-kill giants) on Heroic difficulty and coming out alive feels exhilirating.

There's not a huge crossover between Halo fans and RTS fans - Halo Wars proved that. I'm an exception, because I just love pretty much all genres of games (except Sports games). I think your player pool is safe...until World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, anyway.

The Xbox version is a lot better than the PC version imo. I bought it for the PC back during the Steam summer sale, and I found the mouse/keyboard controls to be disintuitive. The game was designed with a controller in mind. Not to mention, if you play the Xbox version on the 360 it upscales it to 720p anyway, so you get the resolution benefit of the PC version in that way.

I wasn't implying that SC2 players would migrate to Halo: Reach. I was just replying to FSITO as to why Halo is popular in general. Even if you don't like it as much as other FPS's, most of your friends (or most random people online anyway) are going to be playing that, so you might as well play it yourself.

Purrr: you know LOTRO is free-to-play, right? You should start a character on Elendilmir - that's where i'll be (once I transfer my character there).

CC: The problem with level caps is power scaling. A level 60 in vanilla wow had around 2000 hp - my level 80 priest has 21,000 hp unbuffed. I think they're trying to avoid the massive power-spike from just levelling, because a lot of the actual stat increases come from raiding gear - there is a world of difference between a level 80 in dungeon blues and a level 80 in full heroic tier 10. Hell, there's a huge enough difference between me (level 80, normal tier 10) and heroic tier 10.

I really can't understand how anybody wouldn't enjoy Halo 1 - sure, there's nothing new or game changing about it, but it perfected the console FPS. Up until Halo, the most popular console FPS was Goldeneye - and Halo was one of the first games to take advantage of internet play. Although Xbox Live hadn't been officially released, the Xbox's network port allowed internet connectivity - Xlink Kai matches allowed console gamers to experience the joys of online multiplayer, that previously had been limited to the PC gamer market, and required a working knowledge of IPs.

For PC gamers who had been fragging each other online since Doom, this was nothing new, but Halo brought it to the masses. You also have to give Bungie credit - they were the first to come up with the twin-stick / trigger control system that nearly every single game now uses; as important a development as WASD.

...and i'm ranting.

Anyway, I guess what i'm trying to say is that Halo Reach is like a 'best of' of the Halo series - it includes nearly every single weapon (including the 2x zoom Magnum! LOVE THAT GUN) from the previous games, and some awesome new ones (<3 Needle Rifle). I haven't played multiplayer yet since I prefer to play with friends, but I can imagine a new generation of high-school kids sitting around a 360 having an awesome time with this game.

Halo's just not my cup of tea, that's all. I get that it was considered revolutionary, but all the games I've ever played that I consider favorites of mine pretty much hooked me from the get-go, and Halo failed to. I only kept playing because my brother wouldn't quit with the, "Oh, it gets better"s, and the, "It's only the beginning"s. I bought into it for a while, but 'the beginning' never ended, and I'd had enough. But, to each their own.

As for me, I'm playing Bioshock again.

PS3
1 player: PS3+PSEye+PSMove+Sports Champions = US$400
4 player: Above Bundle + 3 x PSMove = US$550

X360
1-4 player: X360+Kinect+Kinect Adventures = US$350

Wii
1 player: Wii+Remote+Motion Plus+Nunchuck+Wii Sports+Wii Sports Resort = US$200
4 player: Above + 3 x Wii Remotes with Motion Plus ($55 each) = US$365

So for one player, the Wii is the cheapest - but imo, most motion games are all about social gaming. For that, the X360 bundle is the winner.
That's also not taking into account the fact that the 360 and PS3 are both HD consoles, and are able to do so much more; my PS3 is my main blu-ray player, and used to stream media from my PC to my living room.

So I spent enough time in Wrecking Crew. Enough to the point where I've had to put down the controller because the game was annoying me way too much. Call me a wuss, but I put up with 49 stages, and couldn't beat the 49th stage for the life of me. So I skipped it, and went to the 50th stage, looked at it, came to the conclusion that this darn game was no longer any fun. Believe, me, I've held out on some pretty tough games that weren't exactly the most fun, but this game was up there with Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine when it comes to annoying little things that just make me not want to play the particular game anymore. That and I wanted to play something else. So I beat Metal Slug on my Wii, and instantly felt better. Since then, I've started this:

I also set the fighting to switch. This was a used copy so no manual which means I spent 5 minutes trying to bash that armless thing's head in with a 2x4. Where is the health bar? There's no cosmetic damage and the I don't limp like in RE4 so I've just been using health items as soon as I find them.

Neg

The little screenshot of the action that's on the inventory screen is your health meter. If it's green, you're 100%. If it's red (and your controller is vibrating out of your hands, you're almost dead.

Healing as soon as you're hurt actually has an impact on the ending, so that's not necessarily a bad thing to do ;)

Great game! I swear it's my favorite of the original trilogy. I've been through that game so many times it's like a workout routine for my hands. I know where every enemy is, I've gone every different story path, I've gotten every secret item (including the infinite machine gun, gatling gun and rocket launcher so the challenge of the game is now nonexistent) and I've pwned Nemesis so hard his grandchildren are gonna be feelin' the burn.

As for my current gaming situation, aside from my daily WoW-ing I've gone back to a little oldschool SNES FFIV.

I think the cheesiness makes it good; there's always the superior GC remake ;) I honestly got scared playing it as an eight year-old. It was one of my first four PS1 games; the original Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot 2, REDirecter's Cut, and a demo disc with all kinds of cool titles to sample. I cycled through them pretty frequently; RE would get me all tense and nervous because for the time, that was the scariest thing I'd ever played, then I'd have to play some Crash Bandicoot for some zany antics to ease my mind, then delve into a little Tomb Raider for some puzzle-solving to even it all out. I miss those days :(

Right there with you with RE being one of the first PS1 games ever played. It was actually my second game with Mega Man X4 being the first. But yeah, the terrible acting and cheesiness is what makes this game playable today. I will say that in "Advanced" mode, this game is pretty difficult for the sheer fact that ammo is very limited. You definitely have to pick your battles in that mode.

I'll be hitting up the GC version soon again though. Just wanted to experience the game that started it all in all its glory.

I've been playing Fable 3, as well. I wasn't expecting to like it all that much, seeing as how I thought the first 2 games were 'Okay, but a bit throwaway'. (A lot of the critics have crucified it, as well).

But to my great surprise, I actually enjoyed it very much. It's easily my favourite of the 3 Fable games, let down only by a bizarrely rushed final level. I thought the balance of humour and seriousness was much better this time round, keeping the eccentric charm of the Fable world, but making the main plot much more serious (and much, much more interesting).

I suppose it suffers from the same problems that most games these days have (too short, too easy, game world is too small, not enough variety in the baddies etc), but for some reason it all seemed to click better this time. It left me wanting more, whereas with the other games, I was glad to finish them and be done with them.

Now that my Xbox 360 is working properly (thank you for the update on the 14th, yet not telling us M$ >.<), going back to Final Fantasy XI Online. Also, playing a assortment of games (Oblivion, Saints Row 2 and others) to get their achievements for Xbox Live unlocked.

I don't know about you, but I was well aware of the update at least a month before the posted date. There were reviews on IGN, amongst many others, that said when it was gonna drop. Also, the Xbox.com website.

Funny Izanami, I never got a email and I've been using the same email address for Xbox Live (since 2006), that I use here. Only way I found out about the update, was on Nov 1st when I had to download the mandatory update. Maxx Skywalker, you say IGN and other sites as well as Xbox.com informed people of it... I don't look on gaming review websites, as the majority of reviewers out there are biased as to how great a game is, I have better things to do with my time online. I was referring to the patch update on Nov 14th as well, not the Nov 1st update either.

In any event, the patch update on the 14th solved the problem so w/e.

Playing an old favorite, Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires... til Assassin's Creed Brotherhood is released tomorrow.

That explains it.

So I've beaten Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga. Took me roughly thirty hours to get through. Fun times.

I also played through this:

. . .on the Wii. Took me less than an hour. I'm not saying I'm pro at these games, cause I'm not. Unlimited lives help, but I'm in it for the jovial nature of these games, and I can't enjoy it, if I'm dying every minute. I just go through being an invincible BA, blowing stuff up.

Now I've started this:

It's been a slow start, but most KH games are like that anyways.

Playing Wolfenstein (2009) and it's really damn good, too bad it's multi-player is not that great/dead, but the single player campaign is really great and quite a long game, I highly recommend it to any FPS lover and buying it for $10-15 bucks is quite the deal.

What is the point of playing a game built around the choices and consequences if you already know how everything works. You might as well go read a FAQ and playing the game, save yourself some money.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for the PS3.

And am cursing about how difficult the special stages are now. I can never perform well under time limit pressure.

But I do feel nostalgic and want the rest of the series again although those have to come from Virtual Console (and after I somehow buy some points online, my Wii is of the NTSC/UC model). PSN Store Malaysia doesn't carry Genesis/MegaDrive titles :(

Well, I found solution against those stupid hackers and griefers. I downloaded World of Minecraft, which allows me to have an external client outside of the browser at fullscreen. It also allows me to fly and jump around at high speeds (yes, it's the infamous hacks). I also dug up a nice little bot that'll allow me to back up my work onto a file. So, if something's destroyed, I can go back and repair/restore it. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em, or at least use the very tools they use, against them.

Should've gotten Black Ops instead. Not only is the gameplay much more smoother with balanced weapons, you won't deal with the hackers and cunts MW2 has. Mainly because Black Ops allows you to be in party chat in every playlist except Search and Destroy where as MW2 has quite a few more. I don't know about you, but I prefer to not listen to the fucktards or screaming nine year olds.
