Teen Titans had its moments (mostly the episodes involving Deathstroke and that demon/god/whatever that was trying to destroy the world).
Okay, my first thought: it looks like they're trying to recreate Beast Wars. Seriously, wtf.
You've got Optimus, that military vehicle one looks like Rhinox, yellow one is very Cheetor, motorcycle dude could easily be Rattrap, and I guess I'm not sure about what appears to be their take on Ratchet... maybe Tigatron? But seriously, wtf. If this show is a retarded version of Beast Wars I'm going to hate it even more than if it was just a retarded version of Transformers in general.

There are enough talented people involved in this series that I'm sure it will have its "moments" too, but that is not very encouraging when it makes your eyes bleed just to look at it.

I loved the Teen Titans show
The look of that just doesn't feel right for TFs though, but eh, whatever, after the movie designs and this it's obvious fans of this crap are pretty much being forced into a very open mindset. I'll wait till I see the cartoon and see them in motion before I go apeshit or anything. Maybe the toys will be cool, who knows.
Prime looks almost exactly like the Cybertron one in vehicle mode. Weird.
Maybe the toys won't be so horribly proportioned, but I'm guessing they will. Action figures usually try to emulate the look of the show they're based on to some extent. =/
Transformers is just too serious for this. I want another show like Beast Wars in which characters die, fall in love, make sacrifices, and basically treat what they're involved in as a real war. Even if all those things are present in this series, it will be impossible for me to take it seriously.

GAH. I didn't really like Teen Titans, and that show isn't really a serious show in terms of tone. Man, I think I'm gonna ignore if at all possible. I hope the writing is good and makes up for the character designs. If not, I'm gonna just watch whatever the Cybertron stuff has been coming on or even find my old G1 Transformers to watch.
Got movie Optimus, tonight. Took me 15 minutes to get him out of the box, and 50 more to get him transformed. He is staying as a truck for the rest of his existance

I'm fine with "different." But Transformers is a serious story and it should be treated seriously. Even if the writing is great for this show it will be impossible for me to take it seriously, and that is what I am so pissed off about. =/

actually, the anime wouldn't have bothered me so much if they would've just stayed true to the story rather than making them into a not so serious joke.
I preferred the comp. animated Beast Wars version, at least they fixed it into the original timeline.
As for the movie, I agree with Ktulu, I don't like the look, but I'm willing to give it a chance and let the story speak for itself.

I'm all for new stuff too, I'm not particularly happy with the new style, but I'm not upset either. I'm just more curious on how they're going to make it work. I'm even more curious on how they're going to make the toys work since they've already announced them. I've also noticed if you look close, the yellow guy, perhaps Bumblebee, also has a red police light on top like the rest. I'm a little worried this will be more like a crime fighting show incorporated with fighting Decepticons where they work incognito with several law enforcement entities as supposed to incognito with a select few humans like Spike and Sparkplug only fighting Decepticons.
Note how he avoided my real question. How the hell do you pry open the back wheels?!??!

I only really enjoyed the first Transformers series with the old school animation. The only other one I enjoyed was Beast Wars. That shit was pretty awesome. All the others have failed to keep me interested and I didn't really enjoy the ones that had the anime feel to it. It just seemed to colorful for a Transformers show. The Teen Titan animation for Transformers? I guess that's the animation you have to use to get kids interested again. Seriously, that looks horrific. Optimus waist is womanly. Vastalis - Doesn't look like Gendy Tartakovsky's art to me at all (clone wars/samurai jack/dexters lab), as stated, it was designed by the Teen Titans guy, and you can tell just by looking at it.
The "piece of shit anime" TFs had great designs that were very true to the original spirt of Transformers. Many were actually huge homages to G1 bots. I could give you tons of examples. Anyway, the shows were indeed silly due to their very young intended audience and some poor japanese to english translation, but the bots looked wonderful at least, and lots of cool fucking toys came from them.
Okay, I've got the transformation down now. I'm a happy camper....except I broke out one of the pins that hold the back wheels together. Is this a common complaint about this figure?

I think there may be two yellow autobots or something, because I've seen trailers with both cars in it at different points.
That, or Bumble Bee gets an upgraded appearance at some point in the film or something.

Bee gets an upgrade in the movie. He starts off as the '74 Camero but later becomes the '08 concept. As for the toys, right now they just have the '74 Camero but they are releasing the '08 concept soon, which incidentally looks WAY better in robot form then the one that's out now as pointed out by Ktulu... (keep in mind they didn't transform Bumblebee on the left correctly.)
Comparison of 70s BB and 08 BB. Serious difference in quality.
Edit-
MTV Movie Awards had some new TF Clips, the cars on the red carpet, star interviews, and a little bit with Optimus and Sarah Silverman made just for the show. Crummy award show as expected but I guess it was neat seeing some new TF stuff.

While I understand the reasoning behind Starscream being a F-22 raptor due to his super-ego and wanting to be the best, I still kind of wish they stuck with the F-15 design. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the fact that they upgraded Starscream to a newer plane which I will admit is growing on me as well, however, They could have kept the nostalgia of Generation 1 and still have the Hi-Tech fighter design that Starscream would want if they went with the F-15 ACTIVE.
I think it would be rather interesting that if the movie does well and they do a sequel, that they might incorporate some Russian designed aircraft for the likes of say Skywarp, Dirge, or Thundercracker. I Kind of like the Su-35 Design in particular. Besides nothing brings out the fear of alien robot invaders more than using the image of our good old Cold War enemies, the Russians.

On the subject of Starscream, let me just say the figure is something you have to own and hold in your hands in order to understand how cool it is. Looking at the figure through the box window even I thought it was blah. But as soon as I pulled him out I was amazed at how great of a figure it is once it was in my hands and I transformed him a few times. Sure it sucks they didn't give him hands but replaced it with 6 projectiles, but the model is damn nice.

Just a thought, Wasn't that one Decepticon Giant robot team leader that type of Semi, only black.
I remember that one episode where the Autobots painted themselves to look like the Giant robot team, and Optimus for some reason changed body styles to look like the leader, they even attempted to transform into the Giant robot, but weren't coordinated enough to pull it off which gave them away.

Finally picked up the 20th ann'y edition of the movie. I've only had it on VHS for like well over a decade. I got movie Jazz because well let's be honest--Hong Kong Phooey's legacy :p
When I got Optimus I took my mom with me, and today I was debating on getting another in addition to Jazz, and it was like I was kid again. "I want to get Ironhide, but maybe I should get Barricade so Jazz has someone his size to fight with."

Me and my dad rented it consecutively for I know a couple months at least. Once the stocking guy had put it in the wrong place and I threatened physical violence on the person who I thought had rented it. I was like "we are going to ask them for their address and we're going over there..."

Movie toys
Movie toy line will continue until summer 2008, lots of redecos/remolds happening, some characters in even more different sizes coming, etc
Robot Heroes
Robot Heroes are continuing even past the movie ones and will even expand to Beast Wars characters. Dinobot, Megatron, and Cheetor were mentioned as examples. G1 Galvatron is also being produced.
Larger ones planned but not definite, will rely on the sales of the ones already out. Their ideas for larger characters so far are Unicron and Devastator
TF Animated (show news and toy news)
Hasbro is working close with CN to make sure the series upholds proper TF feel and style and isn't dumbed down to accomodate really young kids
The toys will be up to 90 percent accurate to the cartoon models
Toys for Cybertronian modes will be produced, not sure if it's for everyone though, Prime was mentioned of course
The large Prime toy may have a trailer that transforms into a giant axe
The art style is explained as a focus on emoting characterization (influenced by the movie I assume)
The "whirlwind" transformations will be there to some extent, but you will be able to see the complete transformations all the same and the benefit will be that there are no stock transformation cutscenes every episode
Along with the Autobot cast we've already seen, Grimlock is coming, as well as two other Dinobots, with G1 style personalities. Arcee will show up, voiced by her original voice actress Susan Blu, who is also the voice director for the show (returning to this mantle from the Beast Wars era)
Megatron will have his fusion cannon and become a Cybertronian jet (again, like the movie)
Tom Kenny's Starscream voice is G1 inspired
G1 Voice actors may be given roles if Susan Blu and CN allow it.
Weird Al has done a cameo voice. (wtf, haha)
Other Decepticons are Blitzwing, again a triple-changer, a new character Lugnut that turns into another Cybertronian jet, and Blackarachnia will return as well
The Ark and Nemesis ships will make an appearance
The toy line itself will not focus on gimmicks, more on transformation and capturing the character like Alternators and Classics did
Set to be highly articulated, characters will have signature weapons
Playsets that integrate with larger robots being looked into (for large scale TFs)
Toys will be released by March 08
Classics
Best toy related news: Classics toy line will continue in 2008, released under the title "Universe"
Sunstreaker and Sideswipe to be released, share the same mold but will transform differently and have different heads and chests. Early shots of them with the same chest were shown.
Voyager sized Octane to be released, still a triple-changer (tanker truck and jet) just like the G1 character
No more Dinobots for Classics, they want to focus on vehicles. Don't know why this is, wasn't clarified
Jazz, Prowl, Bluestreak, Smokescreen, Ironhide, and Ratchet are planned
Galvatron was mentioned, said to be a new mold, not a Megatron repaint
They mentioned that the remaining G1 triple-changers (Blitzwing, Sunstreaker, Springer, Broadside) are all planned
Overall 4-8 deluxes are planned for next fall, with at least 3 voyagers
Remaining Titanium molds (Arcee, Shockwave, Cosmos, WW Bumblebee & Cliffjumper) may be transferred to this line. The Cosmos, if made, will be the design shown at last year's Botcon
The Botcon seekers will not make it to retail so as not to rip off those that paid so much money for them (makes sense but sucks for us that can only afford retail)
Line may receive an Ultra scale for larger characters
It is possible Classics could be seen in animated form
Most important - the line will continue as long as it's successful at retail
Alternators
Most definitely cancelled
Titaniums
6 inch line has been very hard to sell to retailers, explaining the scarcity of so many of them. The remaining few that are still coming out will be incredibly rare due to this.
Misc unclear things
Classics/Universe returning primarily to replace Titaniums and Alternators as the collector oriented line, and will be more affordable, both in production and retail price, than toys under those lines. I assume positive feedback and sales had a lot to do with this as well
G1 Dinobot molds can't be found, so no reissues possible
Not sure if this stuff means Animated or Classics:
A Ultra Magnus that is not a Prime repaint was mentioned
Combiners possible
Comic characters like the Fallen and Jhiaxus, minor TF characters may be made as toys
Anyway, I think that's most of the highlights. If I missed anything you can read more detailed stuff on the usual TF sites, TFW, Seibertron, The Allspark, etc

Ok. I got to a point in the game where I actually got to hear Megatron. It sounds like G1 Megatron but with a much deeper voice. He sounds ok I guess. Oh, and I was able to unlock G1 prime model.

Ok, just got back from seeing the movie
My nags -
The comedy was too heavy, it pleased the crowd but again I say, after all that "this is serious, not a cartoon" talk Bay did, this is the absolutely opposite of the movie I expected.
Prime's big "One shall stand" line being off fucking screen, and then the majority of the following Megs/Prime battle being off screen! They didn't treat their rivalry with enough respect imo
Some of the frantic camera work + the ultra detailed designs made some of the fighting confusing. I'm not the only one to think this.
Jazz's big fight with Megs - medium wide shot, needed more closeups on Jazz to give more impact
Barricade disappears. He's on his way to the final battle...but is never there. Has to be a big mistake there.
Also, Starscream just kind of disappears. The wrap up at the end feels rushed. If they had cut out some of the goofy comedy scenes that comprise this ultra serious film, they would have had more time to treat some things near the end with a little more respect.
Otherwise, I liked it enough to not be disgusted by it, was interested through the majority of it, and really appreciated the effects work. I don't know if it's just the bias towards the franchise but this definitely is my favorite Bay film. A lot of the actual TF stuff, even though I'm still no fan of the designs, was kind of cool to see on screen. Some of the fanwank was enough to make me feel they somewhat cared about keeping true to the spirit of TFs overall, almost.
I wish some parts were a little different or shot a little differently, but overall I think it was as fair an on screen adaption we could've hoped for, especially considering films like the first X-Men. (Sorry, personal bias against that film, it disappointed me big time)
The crowd loved it, laughing, cheering, and a standing O at the end.

I figured that was gonna happen. I knew it was way too much CGI work to pull off. The technology is here, but the man-hours it would take to pull off an entire fight scene on-screen is unbelievably huge. If you were to compare it to other CGI films, you'd notice that the scenes are usually wide shots needing less detail mixed with close-ups and normal shots that are a couple of seconds.
I'm pretty sure this is a franchise, so their should be alot more stuff included in the 2nd than this one. Just look at SW, Pirates, Harry Potter and stuff. Each one is better than the next when it comes to CGI.
So Don't fret! At least it was a first attempt.

What are you talking about
There's a lot of bot action going on, it's just the one fight that they just didn't show well enough. Before the part I'm talking about there had already been a shit load of fighting, it's a very extended scene. There was a lot of other stuff going on at the same time and they focused on that instead. During the Prime/Megs fight the soldiers were fighting Black Out, so yeah, the problem is not them simply not showing the robots, it was that the film makers didn't understand which part of the situation was more important to show. Megs vs. Optimus (which we do see SOME of, but not enough) > humans vs. Black Out
The effects work was actually very well done and I never said anything to imply that the effects team "cheated" by not showing anything. Watch it first before talking about that kind of stuff.

I wasn't saying they "cheated", just that they used shots with less work for better editing purposes.

Is the camera godawful in the PS3 version of the game, Mark? I have to reset the camera every second of gameplay just to see what's going on (in the Wii version). It plays decent and looks okay but there is no reason I should have to be banging on the camera button more than any other

Barricade and Starscream, to me, feel like writing mistakes. There's plenty of Starscream at the end, but I never saw him actually getting away or anything. There's a lot of shit going on and I think they forgot some things in the shuffle. In the comic adaptation Barricade apparently fights Prime with Bonecrusher, but in the movie we don't really see where he goes. Maybe he'll be in the sequel?
The frantic shots - there's still insane amounts of detail in those shots. The amount of work was probably massive. The mistakes made in these scenes are by Bay not pulling the camera BACK enough, there was lots of stuff happening and the camera was too tight in considering you've got people, flying debri, and crazy robot parts taking up every inch of the screen.
The Jazz/Megatron fight was 'shot' to accomodate Megatron's huge size, there was plenty of work going on for Megatron. Again, just some bad directing, in my opinion, as a few close ups of Jazz during their battle would have added more emotional impact, but again, he chose to just show it wider because Megatron is fucking huge.
I know you didn't necessarily say they cheated but given what you did say it seemed you implied that, or felt like that's what I meant by anything I said, and I didn't. The effects work is crazy and I know ILM gave it their best effort
Knegative - you can talk about the TF game here, sure, this is FFS' mega everything TFs thread

during the credits, they show 2 small interviews, from "news reporters", of Sam's parents. They question what they know about the "aliens". Then you see Starscream zip off into space.

I myself was wondering about that during the movie. I did see the scene of Starscream taking off into space. I also noticed that near the end when they were disposing of the decpticon hulks, Barricade's side door was among the pile which means he could have been toasted off screen. They also don't explain what happened to Scorpanok either. Regardless I did enjoy the movie and I kind of like the fact that in a strange way, they ended the movie just like the end of the "More than meets the eye" episode of the Transformers cartoon except there was no space cruiser.

That is awesome. I'm really pleased by how much good news there is here. All of the TF news lately has been horrible for me so I was paranoid.
The only thing I really dislike about these announcements is they just highlight how disappointed I really am by the art style of the new show. It sounds like it has a TON of potential, and I am so sad that I will not be able to watch it without hating the way it looks the whole time. Maybe I'll try it anyway, but I don't know. It's impossible for me to take this sort of art seriously. =/

Which Jazz chapter? Oh well, they're both fun! I'm just upset there's no online play so you and I can get in on it.
As for my thoughts of the movie, I liked it. I had fun and it was a great pop corn flick. I think maybe they should have thought twice before killing off Jazz since he is the only black autobot. And I'm quoting my buddy Daryl, who is black, on his bulletin, "and y did Jazz ( the one portrayed to be black, excuse me of african decent and or african american) the ONLY autobot that died...Get the hell out of here..." Like nobody would see something like that coming. Maybe the next movie will have Blaster and he'll survive.
The first one. Where you distract the cops. I didn't know there was another one. I'm working on the Ironhide stuff that immediately follows it, right now.
The stories might be different for different platforms. It was like that with Spidy3.

Nope, I think it's the same. I did the same thing. Race through city distracting the cops while hitting those marks. Then Jazz is getting his ass kicked by the Decepticons while you play as Ironhide protecting him.
Yep. I need to stay in the first area of the Ironhide chapter I'm in right now. I moved away last time and I didn't have any more trucks to fling at that cement-mixer.
Why do I have to fling stuff at bots that are smaller than Ironhide anyway? Bumblebee vs. Barricade, okay. And, if Jazz was fighting the guys Ironhide is dealing with, I'd understand it. I know it's a gameplay mechanic but it looks damn silly xD

If the cartoon has good story and all and is at least animated well despite the designs I should be able to get into it. It'll be the opposite of the last three shows, where the bots were pretty good looking but the stories (and sometimes animation, especially Armada's) weren't captivating enough for me.
A big plus Animated already has is the voice cast. It's got a lot of talented people on it so I'm sure it'll be well acted at least. The fact that they're all doing it together rather than each person in a room by themselves will really help the performances.
Yeah, that's exactly why I'm so sad though. It seems like every single thing is being done right except it looks like trash. I'd almost rather it just sucked in all respects than was a good show I can't stand to look at. >=/

So you prefer looks over storylines.
I totally disagree, I'd rather have a great storyline over the look of it.
This is why I hate the anime transformers (and a lot of newer anime).
It just seemed that silliness and flashy looks have taken over good storylines, when before there used to be a compromise.
Umm, I never said I prefer looks over storylines. I'd also rather have a better story than great art. The problem with this show isn't that I don't particularly like the art, it's that I think it's hideous, and trying to watch an animated series that looks hideous but has a great story is like listening to a great piece of music played on trash can lids.
(Setting aside the fact that music composed specifically for trash can lids could be sort of awesome...)

All I can say is when it debuts,
sideline your thoughts 'till after you see the first couple of episodes.

I was the same way when the comp. animated Beast Wars came on, thinking "How the hell can they animals", and how weird they looked.
But then when I saw it, It grew on me, and I continued watching.
But I liked the way Beast Wars looked immediately, myself. I never loved the way it looked, but I certainly enjoyed it. They did an awesome job of getting great expressions and keeping the art very slightly cartooney but not stupid looking.

Optimus didn't really mean "it's ok that Jazz is gone" per se but was probably ok with it to some extent seeing as how there was honor in it. Also, his line was a little more impactful than "oh, jazz is dead"
According to the G1 Jazz repaint that's coming Ratchet repairs him and he gets the new colors and such ( I believe there's also a new head ). I doubt he'll be in the next movie, but in some versions of the story he does make it.

I know Devastator is a favorite of many because he was simply the first combiner, and maybe to a lesser extent because he's a 6 bot combiner rather than the typical 5 that came afterwards. He's a lot more unique than the Scramble City guys.
Computron is probably the best of the toys, followed by Predaking I'd say.
In terms of favorites, they're all just hulking brutes aside from Computron, and he's just "smart", so not a whole lot of character development for any of them. Hard to pick a favorite, I guess it'd have to be mostly off of looks.

I can understand why he's beloved (I think you hit the nail squarely on the head) and it does come down to looks, for me. I don't find Devastator aesthetically pleasing. Monstructor was just late G1, 1989, the second year they had Pretender toys out. I don't believe the character figured into the comics at all. The Japanese counterpart was actually a different character named Dinoking. That version really hadmuch cooler colors, not so garish. He was called Dinoking because they changed the pretender shells all the different parts belong to from monsters into dinosaurs. That character was actually in the TF: Victory cartoon, and I believe despite the ridiculously small size of the toy that he was portrayed as your average giant combiner.
Here's a picture of him

Yep. I liked the colors on the US release. He looks horribly bland there, imo. I'm not even sure why I love him so much. Maybe the novelty of having a combiner that small. I had a number of Pretenders and was never really pleased with the idea. Though, I lost my pretenders Starscream and rebought him myself, because well it was Starscream. First toy I ever had to rebuy. I was a pretty careful kid.

I rarely like the toys that have the crazy garish colors so that's why I prefer Dinoking to Monstructor. The crazy neon colored TFs have their own charms, but I always prefer more subdued color schemes. I always quite like the pastel green/pink/blue/purple type Decepticons though, there's plenty of those through the 87-88 G1 releases, and a few in later years, such as Cybertron Hardtop.
MarvStraight, if you attempt that, good luck. I'd suggest taking it apart and such to get the best coverage.

Hard to pick a favorite, I guess it'd have to be mostly off of looks.Actually, I like Devastator cause he was made up of construction trucks. I always liked those trucks as a kid.
Devastator was always a cool name for really big transformer.
When I was a kid I used to draw comics where Devastator would just well devastate.
Prolly gonna catch the movie sometime today. FRIDAY. I heard mostly good things and i'll definitely try to help it beat out Ratatouille or whatever at the box office.

Yes, I do agree Unicron has been way overused to the point were he has fallen to the copy virus that seems to permeate the realm of Transformers. If one side has a cool unique robot, the other side has to have their version of it. The Decepticons had Soundwave so the Autobots dug up Blaster, The Autobots had the dinobots who were animal-like transformers so the Decepticons got the Incecticons, and so on and so forth.
So they ended up making Unicron's double fricking Primus? Oh come on! They aren't even trying anymore.

To be fair, it's better than some other properties. Mortal Kombat comes to mind. Here's green ninja. He's different than red ninja, purple ninja, all black ninja, ninja with smoke around him, yellow ninja, blue ninja, female blue ninja, female green ninja, female purple ninja, female red ninja, etc etc etc etc

I agree...the Transformer characters were added so things at least seem equal on both sides. The extraneous and arbitrarily colored ninjas for Mortal Kombat seem like total laziness...1/2 of the time, they were color swaps of another character.

But I always questioned that, and the fact that in like the first 2 or 3 episodes both the Autobots and Decepticons flew, and then all of a sudden the Decepticons flew, and the Autobots needed jetpacks to fly. Oh Well!
Lunchbox McGillicuddy
07-07-2007, 02:42 AM
The most logical reason I can think of why the Autobots didn't have a combiner team immediately was that Devastator was already a pre-existing toy like a lot of the other early guys. There were a few toys they could've used, like the Trainbots from Headmasters, but seeing how none of them were released in the US, I guess Hasbro didn't like those toys, and simply worked on new ones with Takara, which is why you didn't have Autobot combiners showing up until late season 2.
Also - The Constructicons already had a nemesis before the Protectobots or Aerialbots debuted - Omega Supreme, a 1985 character (The Autobot combiners didn't come until 86). I guess he was meant to be the "answer" to Devastator, in a way, but I really don't think any of it was as calculated as "ok, we got animal Autobots, now we need animal Decepticons" and that sort of thing.

For a short while
In one episode Hound simply creates a hologram of a huge Autobot and that alone is enough to ward off Devastator until Prime can get down a precision shot to separate him back into the 6 individual robots.

Or.....am I putting too much stock in the character? I do that. A lot. I do it in all kinds of media. Penelo is the most recent non-Jazz example. It's almost like I feel that some characters aren't going to get enough love otherwise, and it is my duty to make up for it.

Jazz is an important character, one of the higher ranking Autobots under Optimus, and in the current movie is technically second in command. It felt he was second in command in the original cartoon, at least at first, specifically the first few episodes, as well. One of the writers said at Botcon that there was more with Jazz, and the bots in general, written but it didn't all make the final cut. Maybe we'll get deleted scenes and such on the DVD.

I think Omega Supreme is technically just a rocket
There was a micromaster space station with a similar rocket as well. The micromaster bot it belonged to was called Countdown.
There was also three Japanese only Transformers that turned into space shuttles, Galaxy Shuttle and Mach (part of the Landcross combiner team) from TF Victory, and Raker (part of the Sixwing micromaster combiner) from the early 90s. Raker was recently re-released in the US and UK as Stormjet in the Universe line. There's also the Battle Gaea (
