That might be a little better, but the problem is his hip joints are so low. He basically needs not only less penis size but longer legs.

Maybe I will try to fuze my crappy Optimus deluxe from the Optimus/Megs 2-pack with him somehow.

TK I'm sure there's a possible fix. Whether or not any of us here are worthy of finding it though...quite questionable.

Compared to the early photos of him, apparently there's some differences that seem to also be found in the quick back shot of him in the trailer. It's still a spindly mess but every little change helps a bit. It is looking *slightly* better.

TK
12-24-2006, 05:34 PM
I guess. To me it all looks more or less the same. I think the only reason this one looks better is because so much of it is in shadow it looks more solid than it is. =/

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
12-24-2006, 09:08 PM
Yeah, you're definitely right about that. The changes are more obvious when you can see comparison shots though. Some of that stuff is floating around other board discussions. I didn't see it fit to carry the same over, as I don't want this to just be a mirror of everything else out there.

A lot of people are saying the head is different but I'm not sure. It still looks like it has that droopy/long aesthetic. Judging from the initial leaked design pictures of his back and the new shot from the trailer the head has clearly changed to some degree, but how much is hard to tell. I believe the shadows are tricking people a bit, but there are some definite differences, such as the chest, shoulders, and smokestacks, as well as the flame patterns.

Prime doesn't look that bad. Live action is still another animal though. I'm kinda pissed at the way they went about reviving the franchise Ktulu but these are the days for some of our favorite characters of youth to get some props. Sad they've already botched most of my favorites, like x-men. 90210 with super powers.

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
12-24-2006, 09:33 PM
Reviving the franchise - You mean Beast Wars? They've been popular again, increasingly so, since then, and TFs never really went away in the first place. In the US there has only been one year since 1984 with no toy releases, and there's been a TF cartoon on the air for 10 straight years now. What exactly do you mean by how they revived it?

Atom Narmor
12-24-2006, 09:45 PM
I guess I was thinking about the movie part of the franchise. The first and last in the U.S. was back in the 80's right? In my opinion it could never be topped today no matter how hard they tryed. They brought it back alright but damn. July 4th decides if hollywood gives a crap about us 80's kids or not. Really, they haven't been.

The first and last in the U.S. was back in the 80's right?

No. Ktulu just explained that there have been Transformers toys and TV shows made constantly for the past 20 years or so. All through the 90s and as long as the 2000s have gone on, Transformers has persisted, and it has remained popular.

The toys have generally gotten better. The TV shows... well, Beast Wars was amazing, and all the shows after that have been weak in my opinion. Next year a new one comes out and I'm crossing my fingers it won't suck.

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
12-26-2006, 07:26 AM
I'm sure the new cartoon will be better than the last 3 at the very least. Taking it out of the kiddy anime realm is the best thing to ever happen. I love anime, but when anime is made just for kids, damn it...it's fucking lame. The TF shows of recent years have suffered greatly from this, and I know simply changing that will give the show a much better chance of not totally sucking donkey balls.

TK
12-26-2006, 10:17 AM
Yeah, but the only thing is, I'm not yet convinced that it's really going to move out of that realm.

The trend in American animation these days is to immitate "anime" and produce an aesthetic and storytelling style that I really hate. I don't want it to be anything like Teen Titans or whatever other shows are on Cartoon Network nowadays.

Also: Grimlock.

That angle was probably chosen intentionally. The placement of that hand so that it blocks the inner left leg is just too convenient to think otherwise. They're obviously trying to hide how ugly the legs are, which shows that they're aware of the problem, but just couldn't be bothered to fix it.

The main guy isn't that different but the limbs are better this time around I think, at least in that it'll look better when combined. Also note that these are the Japanese versions, including subtle differences from the US releases, but in general they're basically the same.

Anyway, tonight I went to TRU where they had a buy 2 get 1 free sale. I bought 4 and got 2 free. I picked up Classics Optimus and Jetfire (they were out of Megatron), Grimlock and Starscream, and Cybertron Smokescreen and Monkey Optimus. Classics Optimus and Jetfire definitely took over Mirage's spot as my favorite in the line. Jetfire's detail is amazing. Once I get Megatron I'll have all of them that've been released so far barring the mini-cons and the 20th Prime re-release, but I don't really count those since they're just line filler.

TK

I never see very many of them. And Rodimus isn't the only one I've never seen at all, same goes for Scourge (naturally it would be the only two I really want to buy.)

Also, I noticed something: In this pic it looks like not only does Ramjet not have the fuzzy/indistinct face problem of Starscream, but it seems Skywarp doesn't either. Could just be the photography but his face looks a lot clearer than Screamer's. What the hell happened to Starscream anyway. That's so annoying.

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
12-31-2006, 04:04 PM
In Ramjet's case it's probably because the black is painted on rather than it being the dull color the plastic was molded in. I know that's Starscream's problem, the grey plastic the toy is molded in totally washes out the detail. As for Skywarp looking better, I have no idea. It's potentially molded in different plastic, or perhaps we've only seen prototype/test shot pictures that are inevitably going to look better than what's released. It's also possible his face is painted silver.

I noticed last night with Starscream that shading the light over the head causes the facial features to show up fine, but uncover it and they disappear again. It really is annoying. I'm considering painting over it or giving it a wash to bring the detail out, but I'm worried I'll ruin it.

Back on Tits - I saw a shit load of Scourges in Los Angeles. If I'd known you wanted him I would've picked one up.

TK
12-31-2006, 10:54 PM
Ah, thanks. That's alright though, I only want him enough that if I saw him I'd get him... I'm not going to be worried about it if I never get him.

I might just resort to ordering Rodimus online somewhere though because I cannot miss getting one of those. =(

The past few days I've bought a lot of this crap. While I'll never sell what I have, as I didn't buy them with that sort of intention, I'm really questioning whether or not I can keep up collecting them in such a gung ho manner. I pretty much let myself get broke over this crap and it's really getting silly. My finances can't really keep up, so something probably needs to change. Take into account my limited space too, and it's just a big pile of shit.

That in mind, I went and bought a crap load of stuff today anyway. I picked up all the deluxe Cybetron toys I didn't have from Wal-Mart and Classics Megatron. Hooray.

I'm sure you'll find Roddy, TK. I don't imagine it's still really in wide release yet. Don't resort to online just yet. Who knows, and if it shows up here I'll grab one to send you.

Starscream remains atrocious, while Ratchet is almost tolerable and the best one I've seen by far. Not all good though, he still has a horrible head design like the rest (the one shown there is different than the design art, and worse) and why the hell is he green? Yeah, we've seen the design already, but the toy makes the "HAHA I AM YELLOW-GREEN" statement even louder.

Question 1 -

:D

Question 2 -

All Transformer products are not marketed towards children. There are many toys geared towards adult collectors and comics geared more towards adults as well. Also, the Beast Wars/Machines television shows were much more maturely written than your standard action cartoon fare, and while still a "kid show," the original series was written in a manner that a large age range could enjoy rather than having overly dumbed down dialouge just for the sake of kids, especially when compared to many current cartoons.

Didn't the IDW comics actually use the classics design as a basis for him, though?

Speaking of which, I never mentioned it but I got the first TPB of the IDW comics and I actually really like it. My first impression was too many humans, but once you get into it that stops being the case. I'm actually really excited to see where it's going, but I'm just going to wait until the next TPB comes out instead of getting the issues themselves. Too much work, and I've already got too much other stuff to buy as it comes out. Seems like it's going in a really great direction though, and I like both the art and the writing a lot more than the Dreamwave stuff.

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
01-04-2007, 09:55 AM
The design showed up first in the comics, but in one drawn by Don Figueroa who also designed the toy so I imagine given the time it takes to produce toys that it was just decided right away to use it for both some time ago.

I'm glad you lieks de comics, I'm going to get around to reading more of them eventually.

"Fans rejoice, the movie gods have listen to you, okay maybe it was just Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg who listened, but word is that Frank Welker will be the leader of the Decepticons, Megatron.

Multiple studio sources have confirmed to the IESB that Frank Welker is days away from signing on the dotted line to voice our beloved robotic villain of the 80’s, Megatron, in the upcoming Michael Bay film Transformers.

We know that since day one it has been the desire of Producers Don Murphy and Tom DeSanto to bring Peter Cullen and Frank Welker both back to the franchise that they helped build.

One of our sources tells the IESB that Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg never expected the legions of Transformers fans to rally behind both Frank and Peter the way they have, fans have been vocal and their message went all the way to the top. We should expect an official announcement very soon.

It seems like forever ago when we first brought our readers the news about a live action Transformers movie. Then, Variety reported that Michael Bay was in negotiations to direct and finally our notorious interview when we confirmed that Michael Bay would indeed be directing the film.

Fast forward to the present, the film is in post-production and we are just a few months away from seeing giant fuckin’ robots on the big screen. I’m stoked! Does anybody still use that word?"

Bah. I think I'd really prefer that Welker wasn't attached to the project. His voice just doesn't seem (to me at least) to fit the character they're going to put on screen. It's like they're just grasping for anything that might bring in a few more ticket sales from fans of the cartoon, which is ultimately going to backfire by making the movie even worse.

Then again, it's not like bad movies can't do well at the box office. Night at the Museum seems to be doing okay. =/

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
01-09-2007, 09:20 PM
Casting Welker wouldn't be a move to get more tickets sold, it'd actually probably mean a few less. The average movie audience will far outnumber the TF fanbase, and the majority will think "who the hell is Frank Welker, who the hell is Peter Cullen?" whereas big Hollywood stars in those roles would generate a little more interest, and potentially a little more assured ticket sales accordingly. I'd like them to give Welker the part just for the fact that he deserves it just as much as any big name movie star, and more so. I'm tired of Hollywood not giving voice actors the first shot in roles that require what they specialize in, instead opting for the big names just to get asses in seats.

Anyway, I got up early this morning to take care of some things but my car wouldn't start. To pass the time, I figured I'd get out my TF collection and photograph it for you guys. Upon doing so I realized I have too much fucking crap and I was kind of sickened with myself that I've spent so much money on this stuff when I could've really used it for much better things. I only got through the Armada collection and then just put everything up. I've decided I'm going to try to finish the few collections I've got going now and stop for a good while, until I can a)afford it much easier, and b)have enough space to display things properly. It's silly spending most of my funds on this stuff only to just package it up, stuck out of sight in boxes piled up in my room. After I get the rest of the Cybertron stuff I need and the coming Classics, I'm done for a good while.

Anyway, here's my Armada stuff. I have every figure released in the line.

Both my Armada Unicron and Powerlinx Optimus have been taken out but I store them in their boxes. The only things I've kept sealed are the Transformers Universe toys, which are all just repaints, and the chase figures in the Marvel Legends line. The Universe toys I kept in the package because, first of all most of them kind of sucked, and I thought it'd be cool to have at least one line of toys unopened, and what better one to choose since none of them were really new anyway? The ML chase figures are insanely hard to find usually, and are always just a variant of the regular figure, so I kept them packaged. I'll also keep things sealed if there's no point in removing them, such as PVCs that don't really move and such. For the most part though, I open everything. I prefer when I can restore them in their packages though, as it's sort of the best of both styles of collecting. Japanese toylines are almost always packaged where you can put the toys back in the box easily, but it's generally harder with American release stuff. Accordingly, all of my Japanese TFs are kept in their boxes after I open them. Blah blah.

Marceline
01-09-2007, 09:44 PM
Yeah, I've thought about trying to get some stuff that I don't really care about too much mint in package so I could have the neatness of displaying something still in the package.

That is a really kickass collection, Ktulu. I completely understand you wanting to hold off on increasing it, of course, but you probably will be able to look over it for many years to come and really enjoy it. And I think after Classics is a good time to take a break anyway, since ugly movie toys will probably be a huge portion of what gets released.

My RiD and Armada collections are complete, with Energon, Cybertron, Alternators, and Universe very near complete. I didn't start collecting Transformers actively until RiD came out. Otherwise I'd probably have a lot more Beast Wars toys than I do. All the same, I have at least a few from every line ever released, Japanese included. I figure I'm so behind on most of this anyway that I'm already going to be playing catch up at some point if I really do want to get all of it, so I'm just going to hold off till I can really afford hunting everything down and being able to properly display it. Keeping in mind that Transformers isn't the only toyline I collect, it's all really a little too much right now.

You're absolutely right about the movie stuff. Not only will most of it be rather asstastic, there's going to be way too much of it. If I try to keep the same pace throughout this year I'm going to drive myself crazy, and end up insanely broke over stuff I barely want. I have bought plenty of TFs I thought were ugly, many of which are photoed above. That's pretty silly and it should end. But, GOTTA CATCH EM ALL right? Oh, wait :o

I fixed the white balance on my camera just now, so if I take any more pictures as I clean my room they'll turn out a bit clearer and such.

Still can't get over how "unmegatron" the movie megatron looks. he looks like some super zoinod form the guyver cartoon. not to mention he doesn't even have the trade mark Fusion Cannon. he should've turned into a tank or a lazoer canon instead of a wuss alien plane.

The first Prime I posted looks ok above the waist to me, but below it's pretty crummy to me. The other two I've no interest in, but the Prime vehicle mode looks ok.

This is kind of cool:

These aren't just simple paint upgrades, they also altered Prime's head, flatted out the top of the face plate and made the visor above the eyes extend lower down. Even the crest was changed to have the horizontal paneling. The silver/purple Megatron repaint is a little dull to me but they did give him a right hand so that's cool. Anyway, I thought the little changes on Prime were neat so I wanted to share.

Grimlock with the screws in his shoulders painted over, looks much nicer to me, and it's easier than taking it apart to fix it.

Supposedly this is the "old" head. I certainly hope so. The big problem is the eye design, what the hell is with that?

Prak
01-24-2007, 06:42 PM
Guys, I've about-faced on the new movie. I've only just realized that I've been prejudiced against it from day one. Now that I look at it more objectively though, I've become optimistic about it.

First of all, I've never actually gone out and dug up info on it. I've only read what's been dropped in front of me or what I stumbled across. Today, I actually made an effort to find out what's going on and came upon the interesting information that the pictures we've seen of Megatron are just his alien form, not the form he'll ultimately take on earth.

And that got me to thinking about the designs. Yeah, they look all complicated and alien, but now that I think about it, there really wasn't any other choice if they wanted to make a film that was anything more than fanservice.

Consider this. In the old cartoons, the characters were so blocky that a lot of their movements shouldn't have been possible. If you look at it, there are a lot of times where part of a robot's shoulder would just kinda phase into the torso so that it could move its arm, and other times the bodies would just be drawn different sizes to accomodate the odd movements. Obviously, that won't work for a big-budget Hollywood movie. That made it necessary to rework the designs.

They needed something flexible that could be put through its paces in action scenes without looking retarded to anyone with an eye for effects. They needed something that would look like it obeyed the laws of physics. And that's exactly what we have now. The spindly frames allow rotation and balance. The bird-looking feet look like they can settle down onto concrete without shattering it like a more blocky design would undoubtedly do, therefore making the practical effects work a bit easier.

And really, how many people who aren't old school TF fans are going to think the designs are bad? Probably none. When I look at them objectively, they actually look pretty clever. They've been well thought-out and will work effectively in a live-action film.

Of course, we all know that Bay is shit at directing actors, but who's going to see the actors anyway? Anyone going to that movie is paying to see giant robots break stuff, and it looks like it will definitely deliver on that front.

Basically, almost all of my reservations about it are gone. It may still be a pile of suck, but I can certainly live with all the changes they've made to the classic formula. If I think it stinks, it won't be due to Optimus having a thousand moving parts.

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
01-24-2007, 07:16 PM
I don't mind that they aren't the same as the G1 designs, and I didn't expect that in the first place, but what they did come up with I simply find ugly. It honestly has nothing to do with how different they are. I know for some people it's sheer close mindedness but I know it's not just that for me. I completely understand the functionality as you described Prak, but I still feel they could've looked much cooler, a bit sleeker perhaps. The thousands of parts aren't necessarily a problem for me, just the way they've been arranged. Not agreeing with my taste in design is my only problem with it so far. I still intend to give the film a chance, as I know the way they look has nothing to do with how good the overall story will be. I don't have a lot of faith in Michael Bay, but I've got a neutral stance about the film. I intend to take it for what it is, find the positives, and enjoy it the best I can.

TK

The Stan Bush thing is old news. :P

I find it hilarious that he is so desperate to resurrect his career. =( His songs are so cheesalicious, I doubt he has a real shot at it, but they are awfully fun to jokingly rock out to.

As for Prak's observations about the movie: It's fine for you if you happen to like the new designs, but in my opinion they are ugly as shit. All of the things you listed could easily have been taken care of by reworking the designs and not making them look like something that I would have nightmares about as a kid. As Ktulu said, reworking the G1 designs was inevitable and I've got no problem with that; what I have a problem with is them claiming they are making the movie with the legions of TF fans in mind and then completely throwing out the aesthetic that has essentially been the defining look of the series as long as it has existed (the only line that deviated substantially from this that I can think of was Beast Machines, which incidentally is one of the least popular.) Also, I know you probably don't collect them, but many modern TF figures have robot modes that are supurbly flexible and balanced and keep the traditional Japanese mecha aesthetic intact; the movie could have almost exactly copied the Binaltech/Alternators designs if it had chosen to, and none of those things you listed would have been a problem. I'm not saying it SHOULD have done this, but if Bay and friends couldn't figure it out for themselves, examples of supurb designs were right there for them to take.

Not only that, but there are various examples of the kind of thing that can be done with vehicles and machines transforming into cool-looking mecha robots throughout TV commercials; I can think of two separate ones I've seen people upload to the web that show a company just for a silly commercial using a "transformer" gimmick and having their car (or in the other one, a photocopier) turn into a robot in pretty much the exact aesthetic of the TF series, and it looked really badass. The car one has the robot dancing, and it looks great. There's absolutely no excuse for not using that kind of design.

The bottom line is that those designs exist because Michael Bay thinks they are cool, because that's the kind of guy Michael Bay is. He thought the old-school designs were "kiddy." (I'm not making this up, his own words are essentially to that effect.) I'm sure he thinks a robot with a humanoid face isn't badass enough for a MICHAEL BAY FILM. If it doesn't look like it would break into your house at night and rape you, it isn't hip.

And furthermore, I care about the acting (which will be fucked for the robots, because they've been given bug features—good luck expressing their emotions with those) direction very much, and I care even more about the story, which I've every reason to believe will suck. The whole reason why Transformers is so great is because it presents opportunities to tell stories that are actually deep and powerful, as has been done in the comics, Beast Wars, and to a lesser extent in the original movie. Story is the whole point of TFs. Otherwise it would just be another "big robots shoot at each other" series.

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
01-25-2007, 09:55 AM
TK I'm not quite as pessimistic about it all as you but your viewpoint is totally understandable, and I agree with a lot of it to an extent. The change in the aesthetic of the characters is fine to me in principle, but the extreme they took it too wasn't necessary. Prime aside, and he's just barely hanging on, none of them have much of a Transformers feel at all, the spirit isn't really there, they're just kind of generic, and the designs themselves seem a bit too random in their overzealous "hahaaaaaaaaaa detail!!" school of thought. A few changes here and there would probably provide a much sleeker look, which is all I'd hoped for, something stylish rather than walking scrap heaps. Despite my view of the designs though, I do not have any hatred towards the movie at all, and I'm just going to watch it and do my best to pull positives from it, as I said before. I'm definitely not a "this is going to suck because it's not G1" type, and I don't think TK is either. Some of the bitching is really silly on the TF site message boards. I feel my personal views, and TK's, are fairly justifiable and well thought out, not mere close mindedness, and I feel no shame in admitting that I'm not overly pleased with some things I know about it and the designs of the robots.

Anyway, I still hope when it's out we can all find SOME element to enjoy from it. I'm confident that in no way will it be the worst movie ever made, and while I won't get my hopes up, I'll do my best to keep the same open minded attitude towards it that I do with each movie I watch.

A Star Wars Transformer that actually has a decent robot mode design, hilarious

On TFW's board, re: people saying putting in the old transformation sound in the movie would be UNREALISTIC, amongst other things that would be too unrealistic:

"Not just in response to this particular discussion, but about a lot of things in general: I don't like the "it isn't realistic" argument, because with that logic you may as well not make the movie at all. What about giant sentient robots from another planet that can transform into replicas of objects they scan around them for disguise is realistic again? Fantasy/Science FICTION is a step away from the real world, so why should how far away it's elements go be hindered? Find a better excuse imo

People don't second guess everything. Were the sound to be used for transformations, or a variation/updated version of it, your typical movie goer would see the transformation, hear the sound, and simply accept that it's a result of the action happening on screen. I'm not sure why anyone would be thinking "what is that weird noise." If someone were to dismiss the movie as too unrealistic just based off of that, then why did they ever walk into a theater showing the giant talking robot movie to begin with?"

Yeah, actually I can quite honestly say I think that the Blackout figure is pretty cool looking aside from the head. If they would just nix the bug features he'd be the first movie toy I could dig, like, at all.

It's weird, it's like for some reason they decided that even on one that looks COMPLETELY mechanical in its robot mode, they still have to give it bug features for the head. Why? That concept just makes no sense to me. I mean, some of the BW figures have buggish features, or facial features that generally match whatever their alt mode is, and that makes perfect sense. This is just absurd. Why would something that turns into a helicopter have a bug face. Come on. =(

And as for MP Megs, I'm just all-around disappointed. He'd be so badass if not for those awful legs.

Here is a Heathcliff out and about in the real world:

The silver on the car parts is really awkward looking, and I still hate that he's a Bumblebee clone. That just shouldn't be. They could've at least given him a new head if not an entire new mold. Their cartoon models may have been somewhat similar in G1, but they transformed into completely different vehicles and had different heads and limbs, etc, they just shared the same type of transformation and were the same size. I can understand reusing the mold from Bumblebee, but leaving the head as is is pretty crummy. Oh well, not like I have to buy it right?

Boy TK, I bet this makes you feel really awesome about a certain purchase :(

At TFW one of the regulars figured out you can remove the evil trapezoid part under Tit Soundwave's crotch and maintain the same transformation functionality. It leaves two blue tabs under there, but it still looks much better than having the big bulging grey part there.

We have but only in alt mode. Mostly early pictures. We all kinda forgot about him.

By the way, since you have a cool Optimus avatar, I'm putting you in my top 12 friends on myspace. One of the others deleted there account and since you and your page are hella cool I need to bump someone up. Yours would make a great mouse-over on my page. :p
