I saw the crazy helmet earlier, didn't post it since I already had multiple posts in a row! The rest we've seen to some degree so I didn't worry about it. Anyway, they're certainly packaged nicely. They'll grab a lot of attention on the shelves, even if a lot of the toys have strange designs.
It's pretty interesting that the helmet seems so large if it's meant for kids. Lots of debate over that on the tfw boards.

Bottom line...
Starscream is always hyped up on bad gear oil with half-baked plans for power...
Optimus Prime has remained reserved through his iron dust mask...
Grimlock resembles a dinosaur from the caveman area...and yet has the dialogue and intelligence of one...
Soundwave would not make it into today's fast paced world of technology..both him and Blaster would be replaced by transforming MP3 players that would eventually end up in a homosexual relationship
How the bloody hell does Megatron transform into such a small gun...
Barricade transforms into a police car..yet he's a Decepticon...need I say more
We have enough problems on Earth as it is, the Transformers should've kept that shit on Cybertron
In today's standards, Bumblebee transforms into a woman's car..'nuff said
Optimus Prime's transforming capabilities would be very useful in trafficking mass quantities of illegal drugs across the border
LazerBeak's have been extinct since the 80's
Lunchbox McGillicuddy

In some continuities, Grimlock is highly intelligent but maintains the goofy dialect as a nod towards the G1 cartoon. In the original cartoon, he was built by Wheeljack and Ratchet, thus not as well made as the ones from Vector Sigma/Quintessons/whatever else can be cited as responsible for the likes of Prime and Megatron.
Soundwave and Blaster could merely take on different alternate modes, no need for replacements.
Megatron turning into a small gun - mass shifting, unrealistic cartoon physics, if you can accept that they are sentient alien robots that transform their appearances for disguise then you should have no problem with their ability to also change their sizes.
Barricade turning into a car, yes you need to say more, what's the problem?
Why exactly is a classic VW Beetle a "woman car?"
Laserbeak and Buzzsaw were condors, which are not extinct.

The first two characters with two alternate modes (triple changers) were Blitzwing and Astrotrain, both of whom were created based off of toys that were in the original Diaclone line, one of the toy lines the original group of Transformers were based off of. Initially, it was just to make the toys cooler and interesting with a unique gimmick. Those two inspired more characters in the same vein. Basically, it's just for the sake of the toy being cool, and in the story it could be argued it gives them more diverse means of disguise, and more functionality to aid their respective teams with. For instance, a character that debuted late in the series, Sixshot, a Decepticon with six different modes, was utilized as a one man army so to speak, switching between various modes in battle to take advantage of specific strategies of attack unique to each mode.

Neo Genesis/Todd McFarlane-inspired no doubt with all the TF designs. Can it get freakier?
I hadn't thought of an Eva influence, but you're right, these designs do seem oddly similar.
I wonder if that was a conscious decision. If so, I now have even more reasons to hate Eva.
Lunchbox McGillicuddy
02-12-2007, 07:31 AM
Why would Michael Bay want his Transformers looking like something based off another "cartoon"? He's already expressed his distinct focus on keeping his Transformers from being "like a cartoon." Any Evangelion similarity is probably coincidental, and I myself don't see any anyway, as Eva designs are way sleeker and better laid out than any of these.

Hmm, I guess the teeth/chin on Megatron is sort of like the Eva-01 Test Type, but really, I think that's coincidence. I'm sure the design process was just to make him look scary, so they went with sharp bared teeth. I'm sticking with my previous statement all the same.

The whole giving one toy's accessory to another is pretty common but I've always been anal about just keeping every accessory with the one it came with, so unless I make or buy a custom one some day, no gun for my Bumblebee :(

An understandable strategy. Most of the best ones are Autobots anyway when it comes to classics. You'll miss out on Ramjet though.

Arms don't look too bad there, angle is in it's favor though.

This design should have been used for Classics, with the engineering quality of the mainline it probably could have come out just right. I wonder what they could've done with the Titanium Soundwave as well. Oh well though, no big deal.
Vastalis
02-14-2007, 09:22 PM
The only thing that's dissapointing is the fact that Soundwave isn't on the roster. I understand that it's outdated, and I started thinking, why not make him an iPod, or some MP3 player. But then the hard part (which still isn't explained), would be how a 30ft robot could become something so small!
Lunchbox McGillicuddy
02-14-2007, 09:31 PM
There are spy/surveillance vehicles that might possibly suit Soundwave. He was originally going to be in the movie but they wrote him out.
I don't see why mass shifting is a big deal. Why all this worry about it not being realistic that their sizes can change? The story is about sentient alien robots after all. They may as well have not even make the damn movie if they're that worried about realism.

I know that, but once you start basing things on earth (unless it's the future), especially mechanical things, even regular people say Huh???
Lunchbox McGillicuddy
02-14-2007, 09:54 PM
I just don't think it's justified for people to start nitpicking what's realistic or not while in the middle of a science fiction movie. Futuristic or not, most people going to a movie realize...it's not real. They're there to be entertained. I think you're underestimating what people are willing to accept. Look at Star Wars, look at Harry Potter, insanely popular and successful franchises, and yet, most of the elements that make up those worlds in books and motion pictures are completely improbable by the standards of "the real world." I think if a person were to go to a movie that had talking robots from another planet that felt in the same manner as humans and can reconfigure their bodies into vehicles only to have their sense of realism offended by the matter of fluctuating size from mode to mode that something is really wrong.
Doesn't matter though, it's not my movie, and the film makers feel otherwise about the issue, so whatever.
I don't have much to say on the issue, so I'll just say that my weight is behind Ktulu on this point.
I guess I can kind of understand them not wanting mass shifting. I do think that is actually a bit more of a stretch than sentient alien robots. I'd be fine with it being in the movie though. But really I don't care what they put in the movie at this point, I don't think.
As for Magnus, those pictures of him are leaving me doubly disappointed because he looks so damn good aside from the stupid arms. You're right, the angle in that robot mode picture is really favorable, and it gives me an idea of how freakin' awesome this figure would be if they'd just gone the one extra inch and given him properly placed arms. Ugh. I am so sad about this. =(
Incidentally, I think he's very very close to the IDW design, right down to his gun. Which was based on which?
Vastalis
02-15-2007, 06:32 AM
Either way, I wish Soundwave was in it. Just to hear him say "Lazerbeak, Ravage, Rumble Attack"
There's no way he'd say that, and if by some chance he did, they'd never keep his voice.
Man, I know I'm going to end up buying that titanium Magnus. He's so close to being awesome that I have to. I'm sure it's the closest thing there will ever be to a really great G1 Magnus figure, so I've gotta take it while it's there. I just can't get over how amazing it could have been.
Vastalis
02-15-2007, 07:55 AM
They got Optimus' voice... Why not Soundwave's?
Because the only reason they got Optimus's voice was the satisfy the enormous fan demand for it, and because Michael Bay doesn't have any interest in reproducing things from the original series. All he's doing is taking the concept of transforming robots and creating his own entity out of it, with some vague references to the Transformers series.

Michael Bay interview with MTV
I'll sum up with this one question:
MTV: Do you feel like you made this giant film your own? Does it still feel personal to you?
Bay: Oh, come on. It's not personal. This is popcorn.
hahaha. Oh, Michael Bay, how I detest everything you touch.
Those customs are awesome though. :O
Lunchbox McGillicuddy

Yeah they are, I wish I was that good with customizing, especially so I could make hot monies like that guy. I don't know if I'd feel right about selling them for so much though, I doubt they cost him anywhere near that to make. 100 bucks or so potentially when you consider the cost of the parts and paint, but certainly nowhere near 400.

That picture is fucking brilliant, Ktulu.

They're just making the toys that much better every time. I actually look back and get sick of the old toys I grew up with. Omega Supreme, Ultra Magnus, Blaster, Starscream, etc: You're playing with a freakin' statue! No articulation except for the arms. WOWWWW! (Yes, I know these were early designs and all, but come on...) *sigh*
Lunchbox McGillicuddy
02-17-2007, 03:44 AM
I love the old toys for what they are. I think it's unfair to compare them to the standard of today's toys, they should be compared to what was out at the time, and in that regard they hold up incredibly well. It wasn't always about fancy engineering and insane points of articulation, it was more about imagination, the fun of building things and putting stickers on yourself, etc.

Revoltech Megs looks better than the Optimus, from that picture. I'd like to see better ones.
Lunchbox McGillicuddy

The funny thing about those is that the prototypes surfaced in 2004 and until recently no one ever thought they'd be made. A really cool Energon Prime one was shown back then too, maybe he'll also be made. It looked like the cartoon model rather than the fat ass toy design.

Like G.I. Joes, Even though the ones I collected were the 2nd Generation (puny 5 inch figures), I think they're way more awesome than the ones that are out now. The one figure I truly miss, is my sun color change Zartan figure (I lost it inside an exposed fence pipe. I think it's still there, all rusted and moldy!). :puppydog:

I can see what you're getting at with the Jet Jaguar thing, actually!
I don't like him afterall. =( Same problem as the Optimus design, I think, too much in that exaggerated DW style. Shame. Although it's not like I ever would have bought one anyway.
And yeah, those Magnus pictures just make me that much more bitter about it. That one with him trying to open the Matrix made me roffle though.
Lunchbox McGillicuddy
02-21-2007, 02:08 AM
Well they were designed back when Dreamwave was still going and popular so it's no surprise they look that way, even the numbered G1 reissues over there were using DreamWave art for the packaging for a good while.
I just hope the Energon Prime gets released, it was really cool looking, I'll see if I can track down a picture of the proto.

Here (

Seibertron.com has a gallery of Wreckage from the movie toy line.
The rest here. (

He has a bit more of a "Transformers" feel in robot mode than some of the rest to these eyes, like something they might have released in the Energon line, but that could just be me. Perhaps it's just the head, much more standard Transformers style than some of the crazy shit atop the shoulders of the rest of them.

Combine the two ideas, of course. I suggest you read some tutorials from the guys who are pros at customizing before painting, there are certain kinds you should use and certain steps you need to take to ensure it comes out right. Some paint will just cake up the toy and others will look unpleasantly glossy amongst other potential problems. I'll give you links if you desire.

Here's an interesting picture, an early shot of what was to be the second series of Transformers toys, a few first series guys thrown in. Notice anything odd?
How about these guys?

This one is a completely different shot than the one above
Anything off about Starscream, Thundercracker, and Skywarp maybe?
Then, it turns out they actually had official artwork:
The names beside them indicate these were what Ramjet, Thrust, and Dirge were originally going to look like. Barely different than the first wave of seekers aside from the wings. That would've been totally odd. A really strange thing about these to me is that you can even see other officially released bots beside them, including Menasor, worthy of noting since he didn't even come out until 1986 and these drawings were before the 1985 series. Pretty interesting.
Then if you look at the original picture, you'll notice some other stuff, like a white Powerglide, blue Cosmos, and red Beachcomber. Really makes you wonder just how long all the stuff was in development back then, and how many changes were made. Don't forget that yellow Grapple look alike "Hauler" from the first few cartoon episodes that completely vanished. There must be tons of weird little things like this.
Found this stuff at tf-1.com, pretty cool stuff on there.

Official movie Prime bio:
"For thousands of years, OPTIMUS PRIME and his AUTOBOTS have traveled through space in search of the Allspark. For all that time, the AUTOBOT leader has held one goal in mind – to protect the universe from the evil of MEGATRON. For this massive, metal warrior, nothing is more important than freedom; he will sacrifice all for its preservation. He has fought for centuries, modifying his body into an unstoppable war machine, preparing for that day he knows is coming when he and MEGATRON meet for one final battle!"
You're all bastards for ignoring the awesome G1 prototype post :(

Movie's first cut was rated R:
"According to Shia LaBoeuf via IESB.net a cut of the film went to the MPAA and came back with a rated R attached, not because of sex or language, but because of intense action and violence. Shia goes on to say that Steven Spielberg went to them and argued his point resulting in it getting knocked down to PG-13."
Could be BS though to put more "not a kids movie" spin on the thing.
In TFW's kitbash/customs forum there was a thread where a guy was wondering what figure could possibly make a good custom Kup to possibly fit in with the Classics figures. After some of us dismissed a few ideas, a couple of guys suddenly seemed hell bent on using Energon Snow Cat (

). For me that just doesn't work, and after a lot of thinking I decided on this:
What do you guys think?
I think it works alright. It's slightly more buff than I would want a Kup to be ideally, as he looks too "in his prime" so to speak (I know, yuk yuk.) I certainly can't think of anything better. Kup has a really weird alt mode so there's not that much you can use.

That WW Prime is the only current toy that has a slightly similar vehicle mode to Kup's that I can think of, and while the robot mode is certainly too bulky it still looks like a fair upgrade I think.
Anyway thanks for replying to the thread, it's been lame lately, not much discussion, same as the board in general.
There's a rumor floating around about Will Smith trying out for Jazz in the coming movie :o
yeah, I've really just not been around to actually post interesting stuff in here. =(

Welcome back, TK. You SOB, I've wondered where you've been, having us all worried about you.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a202/nine_fenrir/robot%20faces/16x16_robot-tongue.gif But yeah, I'm not big on discussions so in no way have I made a good "makeshift TK" with Ktulu.
Anyway, I'm kinda liking that Kup. Personally, alt mode makes a better Kup then Optimus. I'm now starting to frown apon my WW Optimus.
It's definitely a better Kup alt mode than anything else I can think of.
Why, oh why Hasbro, did you never make a classics Kup. =(

From the movie guys we need a working Arcee, they have the means to engineer it right these days, Kup, and Cyclonus. Would like to see a cool Galvatron too but the others deserve it more what with Energon Galvatron being fairly close to G1 aside from the giant wings and gunship vehicle mode.
It's lame but seeing this thread and the forum itself go into a huge lull has gotten me down, as my real life friends no longer cared about me once I got back home and so it's like...giant sadface time

More deaths, popular TF customizer TFMaster has passed away from a heart attack :(
Dude was only 31 and is leaving behind a wife and kid. Pretty crummy.

Nah there'll be plenty, but he was still a really positive member of the community what with running Transtopia and modding at Seibertron.com, very friendly guy and did a lot to popularize the whole kitbashing thing. He'll be missed for sure.
Oh man, he was the guy who ran transtopia?

Very interesting, a current picture of Welker and Cullen together.

His voice is still in good shape though, isn't changing like crazy like Mel Blanc's did when he started getting older.
Animation errors and ignoring large groups of characters left and ride aside, G1 was a decent show, the acting was great and the dialogue/stories weren't pure throw away shit, the writers actually tried

the bad animation is what makes it so watchable ^___^
also, its lol how much Bumblebee gets beat up. the little guy always gets the hardest time. lawl.
watching it back has made me appreciate what a superb villian Megs really was also.

Surprising, usually people just bitch at how the Decepticons ran away so much. There were pretty strict policies back then about violence and bad guys not winning etc though, the writers were pretty tied down about that.

i dunno, if his men weren't such bumbling morons, Megs would wipe out the Autobots. he's quite the genius. also, the Autobots are pretty boring. all cars, and apart from a few of them, they have no personalities whatsoever.

They do but the cartoon didn't make room for much of that. Bios on the toys and their appearances in the comics showed them a bit more fleshed out.

You know, I always dreamt of making it big in music or something just so I could be on MTV Cribs and turn around some corner saying "lemme show you my rides son" and just have a shit load of transformers in vehicle mode on the pavement sexpot
The only reason to make the mainstream imo

It's pretty interesting how different Ironhide looks above from the trailer, I wonder if the trailer bot was intentional to make it seem to be a more frightening scene or something, it was much more skeletal and had red eyes.
Anyway, I love how they have faction symbols right over the crotch on those pants :D

TK I got mine at Wal-Mart. There was only one, I thought in the store if they had two I'd pick it up to see if you'd want it. If I see another I'll grab it for you.
I wasn't as impressed with him as I thought I would be, I had told myself I wasn't going to be buying anything for a little while since I can barely afford it since I have a lot of college related financial things to take care of, but when I saw that in the store I felt like it was a must buy. I feel like maybe I could have just left it there really. I still like it, but it's not as exciting to me as I thought it would be. Probably just buyer's remorse more than anything, especially due to being nearly broke with major financial difficulties with school :o
Hmm. I'll try Wal-Mart. The Wal-Marts around here tend to have really bad TF selections though. =/

Let me ask you, do you really want one bad enough to have to pay shipping if you can't find one locally?
I'd also hate for you to pay for one from someone else, pay the extra for shipping, then finally see it in a store.

The division of Sony releasing the G1 DVDs is going under, so the DVDs might not happen. It's possible they'll simply be released by another division of Sony, but no word on that yet.
