And am contemplating whether to get this...

I hope you'll at least wait for retail, there's a current trend of people buying shit early on eBay, mostly stolen factory samples and that kind of shit. It's silly buying kids toys in general, let alone getting them for way more than the intended price just to get them early and earn whatever ridiculously minimal e-peen points that gives.

I actually bought those despite them being Cybertron repaints. Blaster just being a red Soundwave is lame, but I'm a fucking nut for this shit. Well documented!

I wrote up a proper review for Nemesis Prime that is tl/dr:

Universe Nemesis Prime, the much anticipated SDCC 2008 exclusive repaint of Classics Optimus. How does he stack up?

The vehicle mode is a truck cab anything but elaborate and exciting, however, it is a good streamlined sculpt with adequate detail.
Interestingly, it's essentially a palette swap of Classics Optimus. Certain colors were merely replaced by darker hues appropriate
to the character, with others such as the silver on the wind vane and the grey plastic grill not changing at all. The only real new addition is the gorgeous tampographed Decepticon emblem. No red windows on Hasbro's version, a vexing ordeal for many fans, but it's of little importance to me. It still looks good. Overall you've got a good case of simple but effective.

The robot mode spices things up a bit. I've always been a big fan of the mold for this very reason. Arm kibble be damned, I've always found this to be one of the best looking Optimus designs. It's nice and clean, evoking a seamless merger between the sleek aesthetic of modern Transformers and the blocky feel of the original G1 gang. It also carries a long noted aggressive commando attitude, especially with the head design. The sculpt lends itself perfectly to this kind of "evil" Prime revisioning.

The famous teal, a major aspect of the first notable black Prime, RiD's Scourge or simply Black Convoy in Japan, is more prominent here, sealing the deal on the homage perfectly. Again, the lack of red windows is displeasing for some, and I initially felt the same upon seeing the first pictures of the toy, but in hand I have absolutely no problem with it.

If I were to note any issue, I'd say the choice of casting the head and feet in a low saturation blue rather than black to match the torso feels a little odd, but as it serves to mirror the contrast between the red and blue of the regular Optimus, it works. Also, even though the eyes are light piped, they're painted over. Surely an oddity, but when you do get the piping to work it generates a dark, eerie feel that works great with the character.

As for play value, there are just under 20 points of articulation, all of which are incredibly useful, and when you factor in the inclusion of two guns formed from truck parts, both of which can be displayed in various ways, the fun factor and variety of poses is notably high. The robot mode is simply brilliant.

Needless to say, I'm very happy with this toy. I feel quite confident in rating it a 9/10. The concept may be over done, but when the result looks this good, any such grievances simply melt away. I absolutely couldn't be more pleased.

For now, It's still available at Hasbro Toy Shop's website, so If you haven't already, I highly suggest you purchase one
before it's too late. If you live in a country they don't ship to, ask someone from the US to order one for you and surely someone can accomodate you.

Nah I never buy stuff early, let alone for more than the RRP (I have little money as it is). I barely have any Transformers, I just saw that picture somewhere, thought it looked nice and saved it as a reminder for myself.

After seeing some more pictures it looks a bit too big, I don't have anywhere to put it! And I'm doubting whether it would look good on a shelf anyway.

I don't think I'll ever transform it more than once, it's known as the hardest transformation ever, takes people like an hour, and it might even break in spots with an untrained hand. Also the gun is just too damn big! Overall, too much stress for a giant gun.

I mostly wanted him to display with Optimus. They look nice together.

That Optimus you posted was the first teaser pic. The animation is much sleeker and cleaner, and it's actually been a very well received show with a toyline selling like mad. It's already been officially cleared for a third season as well. It's not for everyone, nothing is, but it's still been a success.

Next year is the brand's 25th anniversary with tons of special product in tow, as well as the release date of the second live action film, sequel to what was pretty much 2007's most successful movie (I don't really care for it, but see how I don't let that generate radical statements about it's popularity?) and Animated will continue on. The comics from IDW publishing are also doing well. I'm not sure how in the world you came up with this franchise's popularity ending. If anything it's in one of it's higher peaks of popularity so far.

You know what, you guys kinda convinced me. I'm at work so much I even miss my favorite shows but I'm going to give this a try. From what I knew it had virtually nothing to do with the original story line and was geared for children more than anything. I was expecting to see 3 or 4 anime eyed white kids tagging along for every adventure. Still am.

I always wanted a serious transformers show that picked up where the post movie series left off and never got it so you can understand my frustration. I wanted to see Hotrod become an experienced leader and Cup become a scrap heap, if you know what I mean. As the shows are now the apposing sides will fire hundreds of shots at each other and nobody will get blasted into toasters and springs. There's no element of danger or realism that i'd like to see. Those kinds of shows were more so in the 80's, the rare times they did appear. I guess I am stuck in the past and you cant hate me for it!

TK
08-14-2008, 06:41 PM
Actually, Beast Wars featured many character deaths, lots of characters getting blasted into toasters and springs, and a very serious element of danger and realism. And no anime kids.

If you could get over the fact that they don't turn into vehicles, you'd probably find a lot there to like. The show started out as more of a kids thing and then started getting pretty serious midway through the first season. By the time season 2 had started they were killing off characters, developing intricate plots that ran through every episode, and basically going contrary to everything you'd expect from a kids show.

They also tied it in quite nicely with the G1 storyline and there are some absolutely orgasmic moments of fan wank to be had. At one point during the last episode of season 2 I literally gasped, I was so excited about the tie-ins they were making.

Animated has nothing resembling two opposing sides firing shots at each other and missing. It's funny that's your critique about shows "now" Atom when that is what usually happened in most G1 episodes.

In Animated there are quite a lot of hand to hand battles, and characters really do get hurt. Beast Wars too of course - there are some really brilliant fights. A rather famous one with Dinobot fighting all the villains alone springs immediately to mind.

Beast Wars it the most serious treatment of TFs so far, and honestly, Animated is second if you count G1 as a whole rather than the movie alone. You'll probably find more to like in both of them than you close-mindedly assume.

edit - ok so you like MunkyWars then

Of course - I have no problem with anyone not liking any of this stuff, as long as it's not for closed off reasons that prevent them from even giving it a chance.

Bumblebee's stingers folding all the way in improves the toy so much.

TK
09-17-2008, 12:22 PM
SO HEY GUYS! Any neat new finds?

I got Universe Galvatron. I think he looks even better in person. Say what you want about the colors, but I think the mold itself is terrific. It's got a couple small problems, mainly the big ugly gaps in his feet, but that's easy to overlook considering how cool the rest of it is. I love how evil he looks and how he has that neat open hand and you can really put him in some pretty intimidating poses. Probably my second favorite of the new Universe figures after Sunstreaker.

I also stumbled over a Titanium WW Grimlock, which I wasn't going to bother with, but since it was there I thought "eh, why not." It wasn't a bad decision, he's a lot better than the other couple of Titanium figures I bought. Doesn't fall apart, and overall he looks good. His only real issue is his pathetic little arms, but he still looks pretty cool just standing there.

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
09-17-2008, 03:59 PM
I *just* got Galvatron yesterday, and Acid Storm today. Wal-Mart has all deluxe figures for 7 bucks right now - so go take advantage if there's anything you want.

Galvatron is ok but falls apart too easy. BTW TK if you turn his feet around at the bottom - well, it isn't GEEWUN but it's more stable and looks a little more complete

After getting a non-sticky Prowl and figuring out it's rather easy to transform him without breaking the doors off (many claim it just can't be done) I like him now way more, as I sat and messed around with him all my gripes just kinda slipped away. I suppose Sunstreaker is still better, but both are pretty sweet really.

Tracking down the TRU stuff is hard for me since the nearest one is 20 miles away, and honestly I don't wanna risk a somewhat big drive and all the wasted gas (especially NOW) for toys that might not even be there. Wal-Mart runs are never hard, the nearest one is only about 2 miles. So - the status of the new Tits for me is basically in limbo :o

Did you see the Tit Prowl also? That thing looks terrible imo

TK
09-18-2008, 06:02 AM
Yeah, Tit Prowl was there and I almost threw up when I looked at it. I can't imagine who would possibly spend money on that hideous thing. Not surprisingly they had several of those and only one Grimlock.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about him too much. I think he is worth getting if you happen across him but due to his being a Titanium he is just too far short of his true potential. Yet another Titanium that, had it been used for Universe instead, could have been downright AMAZING and instead he winds up being cool but with a nasty flaw that holds him back. His arms really do suck. I was messing with him the other day and it's just so frustrating that you can't do anything with them. It's such a good character design and such a good mold in every way but that. Makes me very sad.

But in brighter news, I FINALLY found an Onslaught! I was out buying the latest issue of Spider-Girl today and since TRU is right next to the comic store I thought I'd stop by and look for him one more time and lo and behold, there was one remaining! (And about sixty Powerglides, heh.) I squeed in delight and bought it immediately.

This guy is so totally everything I wanted. My favorite Universe figure, hands down, including the "Classics" run. It would be hard to find a pose for this guy where he doesn't look fucking badass. He does not take shit from nobody. One more word out of you and he will ram his wrist cannon up your ass and pull the trigger.

They should hire me to write the little profiles on the packing.

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
09-18-2008, 07:17 PM
Yeah Onslaught is awesome. Glad you enjoy! I actually saw some guy in Wal-Mart once with both of those in his hands, weighing them like a fucking scale trying to figure out which one he wanted, haha. I spoke up and said just get Onslaught.

I got Silverbolt a while ago and he looks really good too - has a weak transformation, but I don't care too much about the A to B as long as both modes look ok

My only issue with Hound was his face, looks fat or something to me, but will still be purchased!

The Vector Prime repaint looks pointless, and I hate when the seperate the colors so much, it gives a shirt and pants effect.

I went to that Toys R Us I mentioned today for the hell of it. No TFs worth buying. No Titaniums, but they had some decent GI Joe things I grabbed so I guess it wasn't all for nothing.

TK
09-20-2008, 02:00 AM
Oh man, you're getting the new Joes as well? Your wallet must be crying. ;_;

The Vector Prime repaint looks OK to me I guess but I can totally see what you mean about the colors. I think in this case, in a way they sort of ARE going for a shirt and pants effect because I think he's supposed to look like a "knight" to fight the opposing "dragon" character, hence the top being silver to give the effect of armor. Doesn't look that great, though. The only version of that mold I would have liked is the Alpha Trion one, and we all know how accessible that is... fuckin botcon.

That repaint of the dragon one (I forget his name) from Cybertron looks pretty decent though. I always thought that mold looked kinda neat but never picked it up so maybe I will get that one. I'm wondering if it's meant to be a new version of Transmetal II Megatron from Beast Wars, because he definitely has a predacon logo on him. I think I like that idea because the TM2 Megs toy kinda sucked, and by the show's storyline he really wasn't a Transmetal anyway and never used the toy's pointless "vehicle" mode, so this, despite not looking more than a little similar, would still make more sense as a toy version of the storyline's character.

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
09-20-2008, 02:59 AM
Yes my wallet is a bloody mess. I'm doing ok though.

The Cyb. Scourge repaint is an homage to RiD "Bruticus" - a Predacon hold over from the Beast Machines line, even has the same name

http://tfu.info/2001/Predacon/Bruticus/bruticus.htm

The three-headed beast mode on Cyb. Scourge makes it pretty perfect. Only problem is that his original colors aren't that different from the repaint! I like the Cryo-Scourge version best.

Your idea would have been neater though, the actual homage is pretty weird :o

The Cryo-Scourge one I mentioned actually is a TM2 Megs homage in a way though, as it homages the Cryotek (blue) repaint of that toy

Cheetor looks much better than that in the show.

Also, why does this stupid new mold not have his guns? I hated it when they started inexplicably making Beast Wars figures with no guns, and the original toy had really cool ones. There is just no reason for this!

If they were going to make a new mold of a classic Beast Wars figure, I don't get why they didn't do someone who actually needed it. Rattrap, Rhinox, or Dinobot in particular could have had much much better molds.

This officially gets the TK seal of stupid.

To be fair I don't think we've seen a single shot of Animated Shockwave transformed properly yet. It has two robot modes and every picture so far has been some mashup of the two

Uni Ironhide is pretty miserable though - giant crotch, Allspark blue, transformation cracks everywhere in the vehicle mode. I'm pretty disappointed with it judging from the pictures, but who knows - could be better in hand. A lot of them are.

I did a little digital recoloring on the vehicle, weird blue windows to grey, as well as colored rims and highlights along the bottom:

Doing all black windows would also help conceal the cracks there

Also, he's got one of the few Henkei repaints that are undoubtedly a lot better than Hasbro's

Henkei on the left, Universe on the right

I planned something kinda similar, especially the grey legs to take the "thong" look away. Rather than buy the pricey import I'll probably just get Hasbro's and paint it myself.

This is pretty cool. The molds are not the best but that packaging is nice. There's also going to be a Mirage repaint as Dragstrip

See more of the packaging here: http://www.actoys.net/bbs/read.php?tid-297011.html

And according to this link: http://www.otca.com.au/boards/showpost.php?p=48419&postcount=21

There'll be a new Cliffjumper, a red Mirage, and Nemesis Prime.

I hope the Cliffjumper has a new head!

Collectors Club News mentions the Prowl mold from Universe will have it's inevitable Smokescreen repaint actually released at retail. Very surprising! I was so expecting it to be an unobtainable Botcon toy

In the same wave is apparently a Beast Wars Dinobot - interesting since we were just talking about that. Let's hope it's nicer than the Cheetor one. I'm sure it'll be better than the original though, no mutant head in the way and all that.

TK
09-25-2008, 07:40 AM
The mutant head on Dinobot was only a minor suck in my opinion. The main thing that shitted that toy up was its horrible beast mode where its torso was a stupidly obvious pair of legs. In general a show accurate Dinobot would be really nice considering what an important character he turned out to be.

On 1st point - Yep, I noticed :( Maybe the whole "hey here's some rockets" thing is only a flip out and you can actually hide it better

2nd point - Would be even better if the colors weren't swapped around. I know an older release of the original did the same thing so I guess it's a homage to that specific version

TK
10-02-2008, 10:53 PM
the only thing that I really dislike about the colors is the face, other than that I think I am fine with the color swap since it still sorta keeps the spirit of the design intact. It does seem sort of odd though. Should be easy enough to just get the colors to match.

The robot mode's waist looks really dumb also. I don't get why they can't do a better job on these BW updates. The original line itself was so good, this just seems insulting. =/

Lunchbox McGillicuddy

I know I'll probably buy that and Cheetor despite anything, thus is my addiction to this shit - and I'll probably only be able to make a real opinion on them when I have them in hand. It's usually like that really. No amount of pictures or reviews or videos can really match actually having the thing. Sure, the really special ones will look cool and get you more interested from the start, but it always has to come down to personal experience.

I know what you're talking about. I think it was on that livedoor image board that's gone now :(

I picked up some new friends Thursday:

Sideswipe's holding a gun from some weird KO I've had forever, he sadly only comes with the one on his shoulder.

I really like Swipe and Streak, but Ironhide is a weird combo of win and fail. He's almost really good but there's a lot to gripe about too - the head is always pointing downwards, the tab behind the head is ugly, the colors are iffy, the crotch is gigantic, the car windows are an atrocious blue, the vehicle has visible seams ALL OVER IT, etc

I repainted him to be slightly more GEEWUN ACCURATE:

For 8 dollars though (on sale at Wal-Mart) he's still worth getting. I feel weird that I repainted him so I might get another if I see it...maybe

Oh and LULZ:

Neg

But, it's still fun to look.

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
10-15-2008, 11:58 AM
It'll be way harder to find one by itself

I've seen the Star Convoy reissue for as low as 50 bucks before maing. I don't know why you hatin but that's a pretty serious toy

http://cgi.ebay.com/MISB-C-372-Star-Convoy-Reissue_W0QQitemZ110293489068QQcmdZViewItem?hash=i tem110293489068&_trkparms=72%3A1417%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C 240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

That one is fair, I'd say. Consider that some regular Prime reissues sell for over 100, you know. That's more 'essential' but it's a much smaller toy.

Neg
10-15-2008, 12:04 PM

Not too long ago, this guy won a TF prize, and he could CHOOSE between Encore Omega Supreme, or an Animated Bumblebee (pre-release.) He chose the Bumblebee...because of space. He chose a toy he could've waited a month to pay 10 dollars for......over a toy he'll never get for under 100.......because of space.

Sometimes....sometimes FUCK SPACE is all I'm sayin :p

And btw: holy shit

Neg
10-15-2008, 10:19 PM

It is my first. I have mixed feeling about the price, I'm trying using the bonus comic book, dvd and sound box to justify its price. At the same time I could take it back and just get a masterpiece. I'm not opening it while I debate keeping or taking it back. But again, it is my first G1 prime.

It's nice to have since it's for the 25th anniversary. I'll probably buy it despite the price, and despite having other versions of him haha. It's worth mentioning that you could potentially get the Japanese Encore one for slightly lower if you shop around, but it's minus the extras.

Of note for TK types: Best pictures of Dinobot so far, and a look into what Animated did with Waspinator

TK

That IS the best Dinobot picture I've seen so far.

The robot mode looks better. A lot. Unfortunately beast mode is just total rubbish and that's just never going to change. It's sort of ridiculous since that was the biggest problem with the original figure. =/

Lunchbox McGillicuddy
10-21-2008, 12:07 PM
Yeah, but to me, if the production run's robot mode really does look that good it'll be worth buying. Think you'll get one anyway? With the first 25th anniversary release technically out now (G1 Prime) I imagine it's possible Dinobot and the other deluxes could be out before Christmas.

So...

I don't think I'm going to get that Dinobot, but maybe. The thing is, I'm trying to be real conservative about my spending these days, so I think I'm only going to be picking up the stuff I REALLY want.

Now, if they did this with Rattrap, and it was good, then I'd have to get it.

Lunchbox McGillicuddy

I hear you there. Since Wal-Mart's had deluxes for 7.77 the last month it's made it a bit easier to pick up the new Universe stuff. All the latest voyagers/ultras are repaints so it's not been bad.

If you want a Thundercracker I totally suggest grabbing Acid Storm while Wal-Mart has em on sale. Get some blue, black, red, and silver Testors, which are cheap, and from there it's really easy. I was actually surprised. Just be patient and allow the paint time to dry and it turns out pretty good. Only tricky part is the stripes on the wings - I still have to do that.

All Hail Megs has been pretty disappointing so far, imo.

It seems like it's slowly getting better, but it's way too "NOW EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE EXACTLY LIKE GEE WUN." It just doesn't feel like it goes smoothly with the established continuity at all, and I don't really like the writing.

The art is fantastic though.

I am very new to Transformers or even comics in general.

There is a continuity?

I assumed it'd be like the cartoons.

EDIT:

I did order some sort of new avengers/transformers crossover though.

I like crossovers.

Trade paper back. It's just a book collection of several issues.

In Transformers comics there have been three primary continuities. There were the original Marvel comics published back in the 80s-90s like while the cartoon was going on and beyond, which varied a lot in quality. Then there was the Dreamwave comics, which in my humble opinion were not particularly good but a lot of people have a soft spot for.

Now the right to make Transformers comics is owned by IDW Publishing, and I think they have been doing a very good job of it so far. All Hail Megatron occurs within the new, "start from scratch" Transformers continuity that they began when they got the license.

The TF comics they've been doing so far have all been written by Simon Furman, who became the primary writer of the Marvel comics back in the day. Back then he was constrained by basically whatever Hasbro and Marvel told him he had to do, so this time he was able to start the story from the beginning exactly how he wanted it, and he kept the good parts about G1 but changed a lot of things.

One of my complaints about All Hail Megatron is that the writer seems to want to take things back in a more "it's just like G1" direction. For example, the way Furman wrote Starscream and Megatron's relationship was really great, but the way it has been portrayed in AHM so far is just back to the same old "Megatron says some insulting things to Starscream who then gets annoyed and looks like he's plotting taking Megs down" from G1.

They also reverted some of the character designs from modified versions back to more G1 appearances. The Decepticon seekers, in particular, had received a really cool redesign in the IDW comics and now in AHM they just inexplicably went back to looking almost exactly like the cartoon. The writer claims this will be explained as part of the plot but no matter how he explains it, it's obvious he just wants everything to be like G1. He also reverted Soundwave back to not saying anything and being a total yes man for Megatron, whereas Furman had turned him into a thoughtful character with a lot of depth.

That said, I'm still buying it. I mean I'm not claiming that this is some kind of One More Day level travesty or anything like that. Just a bit of a disappointment for me.

Infiltration is the first part of the IDW Continuity

One More Day/Brand New Day is a ridiculous thing they've done with Spider-Man, you should just read up on it, you'll laugh your ass off.

Yes I do read comics, but since I spend so much of my extra money on toys it's hard to always afford them

Penguin
11-02-2008, 06:52 PM
how many series are in the idw continuity?

TK
11-03-2008, 03:42 AM
The first series was broken into a bunch of "limited series" type dealies, each between four and eight issues. It goes:

Infiltration
Stormbringer
Escalation
Devastation
Revelation

Stormbringer chronologically takes place before Infiltration but came out after (it's about events prior to the Autobots and Decepticons actually arriving on earth, and the end of it ties in with events early on in Infiltration), which is why it doesn't follow the "ation" titling. Other than that they are all part of one cohesive story.

There were also a bunch of one-shot issues called "spotlights" that focused on fleshing out the personality of one particular character and would advance little bits of the overarching plot that you didn't absolutely have to know about but gave it all a lot more context. It actually got pretty complicated if you kept track of all the different story threads.

Revelation was only 4 issues though and imo needed to be longer, so I felt like the series didn't quite end on the same level of quality as most of it had been. It wasn't bad, though.

I think it's sort of one of those things where it's regarded as part of the continuity, but the "main" stories will never acknowledge its existence.

Nerdgasm: this is problematic because the Transformers comics Marvel did existed within the Marvel universe. They met several established Marvel characters including Spider-Man. This conflicts with the new Transformers continuity coexisting with the Avengers!

HOW CAN WE RECONCILE THIS

Yes, yes it is.

If you're feeling like being super complete, order the Spotlight collection trade paperbacks, too. You will get the whole story without them but parts of it will make more sense if you read them.

Also, there is one thing I forgot to mention, and that is Megatron: Origins. That was a 4-part series but it was really bad. It was a different creative team and was supposed to exist in the same continuity and explain how Megs came to power, but it screwed up in some notable ways, like having Grimlock talk like his G1 self even though it had already been established in this universe he doesn't have a speech impediment. Not that that really matters, you could just write in that he lost it or something, but the point is it really just doesn't fit in very well in feel or continuity and it just isn't a very good comic period. I actually read up to number 3 and didn't even bother to get the fourth one because I was just so completely disinterested in everything about it.

So yeah. Most people pretend it didn't happen, hence my having forgotten it.

They're pretty much the best looking toys of that scale so far though. Makes it suck even more that they aren't bigger because the designs would clearly work at a larger size with a little more engineering to em :(

The first wave of new ones (Jazz, G2 Megatron, Hound) was pretty good so I won't mind grabbing these, especially since they're only like 4 bucks at Wal-Mart.

We're getting a deluxe Hound too obviously so maybe they've still got some of the other characters up their sleeves for bigger toys. Warpath is apparently small because of their crazy "WE HAVE TOO MANY BIG TANKS" bullshit, same as Galvatron :o

All I know is they'd better have *some* shit we haven't seen yet, because if all of this is the whole 25th anniversary line...then wow, that's so underwhelming. The GI Joe 25th line that started last year, while admittedly full of figures a lot cheaper to produce than Transformers, has been huge and is still going.

If anything is going to screw it up it's going to be the movie toys. I know once May hits they'll be fully focused on those.

Aren't these close if not exactly the same size as the "basic" scale? There were really some pretty good molds in that size, at least way better than this stuff. I agree they seem good for what they are but I know they were doing better with basic figures in Cybertron.

So I've decided to skip reading all this or even grasp the conversation but I did decide to tell you all something quite neat. I'm in the military in San Diego and I work on aircraft (I'm not getting into too many details here) but the crew (a few actors, maek-up artists, director and camera crew) were supposed to be flown out to a carrier by the aircraft I work on, which means we would have had the chance to meet them...but our guy in charge (like I said, not too many details) said no to them and so they went next door. We didn't get to meet them but we saw them from afar and they were out on the ship filming for about 4 days. Was pretty neat to know that if our guy in charge said yes to them that our aircraft would have been in the Transformers 2 movie, needless to say a lot of people were quite pissed because they said no to them. :)
