Rules:

In each edition of the Rumble, a list of Final Fantasy things that are related in some way (such as music pieces, FMVs, etc.) is compiled, sometimes by me, sometimes with the help of nominations.

Battles are held one-on-one in a series of round until things get down to one final battle, determining the winner for that edition of the Rumble.

In the first round, ties are broken this way --- whichever entrant was winning before the battle ended continues to the next round. In rounds after that, tie-breakers are based on the percentage of votes than an entrant received in past rounds.

Generally, each round is left open for 48 hours, but it might sometimes be more or less. The rumble is usually updated somewhere between 9 P.M. and 1 A.M. eastern time. Usually it won't go any longer except under special circumstances. If an entrant is winning by a blowout of four votes or more (formerly six votes), I will end that battle as soon as I notice it and a new battle will immediately commence.

Discussion is usually not allowed, however, you are encouraged to post your thoughts with your vote. This helps me to count the vote total without confusion. If you have any questions, please PM (private message) Agent0042.

You are asked to put your vote (only your vote, not any other included discussion) in bold, although this is not required. To bold your vote, put b within < > or [ ] before it and /b within < > or [ ] after it.

Okay, now for the new edition! We're going to be doing something a bit different here. My idea is to have a series of battles in brackets. There will be four brackets, with eight music pieces in each bracket, all fitting a certain category. In the first round, two pieces from each each bracket will battle each in turn, then there'll be three more goes at that at until there are sixteen pieces left. At that point, Round 2 will begin and things will be held like a normal rumble. No underrated/overrated stuff this time, you're voting for which ones you like, plain and simple.
Most Joyful
Main Theme - Final Fantasy IV
The Dragon Spreads Its Wings - Final Fantasy V (Going on to Round 2)
Locke - Final Fantasy VI (Eliminated in Round 1)
Descendant of the Shenobi (Yuffie's Theme) - Final Fantasy VII

A Secret, Sleeping Beneath the Deep Blue Sea - Final Fantasy VII (Eliminated in Round 1)

Ami - Final Fantasy VIII (Eliminated in Round 1)
Melodies of Life - Final Fantasy IX (Going on to Round 2)

The Landing - Final Fantasy VIII
Retaliation - Final Fantasy VIII
Feel My Blade - Final Fantasy IX (Going on to Round 2)
The Skirmish of the Silver Dragons - Final Fantasy IX
Nomination Spot 4
And our first battle is ---
The Dragon Spreads Its Wings - Final Fantasy V (Oh, I love this one! It plays when you're riding the dragon in Final Fantasy V. Very joyful and fun to listen to.)
vs.
Epilogue ~ Good Ending - Final Fantasy X-2 (A very joyful and triumphant piece that plays when you get the Good Ending for Final Fantasy X-2. Well, I wouldn't say that the entirety of the piece can be called joyful, but for the most part, it is. This is another one I really like, but then again, I'm a big fan of most of the pieces in this edition.)
(For this battle only, I'm putting the battle in bold to draw attention to it, since there's a lot of info in this first post.)
Not sure you remember what a particular piece sounds like? There are MIDIs available at the main FFShrine site, but be aware that the quality of them varies greatly from piece to piece and for some games, not all songs are available. You might do better to check the game if you have it, or get an MP3, I suppose. Also, note that sometimes the names on the MIDIs don't quite match the names I use.
Do notice that there are four nomination spots, one for each bracket. Please, please, if you have any suggestions for what should fill those spots, post it with your votes. Your nominations can be from any Final Fantasy game, including Tactics or XI. Hell, I'd even be glad to throw in Kingdom Hearts if enough people say they'd be interested in seeing it.
P.S.: If this edition is pretty popular, I might do it again sometime --- there's a lot of pieces I wanted to include but had to pass on to at least try to mix things up a bit as far as the number of pieces from each game that were included.
Note: The edition featured in this post was disrupted by a forum hack. It did eventually finish, however, the record of it was not saved.

I'd like to see "Aria di Mezzo Carattere" (FFVI) under emotional, as it's pretty much the best song of that category. Also "Dancing Mad" (FFVI) under intense (maybe, I guess its different moods fall under all of the categories).
Oh, and The Dragon Spreads Its Wings.
Yep, The Dragon Spreads it's Wings is definitely the pick of the two.
Wow, looking at those previous competitions, FFVII seems to dominate a lot. I hope in this case it does not, as music is much better in heaps of the other games. Thank you for putting Skirmish of the Silver Dragons in :)

Wow. Well, the voting was a bit slow at first, but then it really took off. Thanks for the votes everyone and for supporting the new thread.

Yes, you have the basic idea correct --- moods it is.
To those that have nominated something already, thanks. "Eyes on Me" and the FFVI "Aria" are both great choices. "Eyes on Me" I had considered including, but "Aria" I had completely forgotten about. If people want to second (or third, etc.) those, that'll help to determine which is included. If not, I'll have to make the choice. And continue to nominate, folks, if you don't nominate, then ultimately I'm the only one who has to make another choice and you're leaving it in my hands rather than taking a chance to take control.
Also, good going Agent. This is truly a well organized rumble.
:) Thanks, I appreciate that.
Wow, looking at those previous competitions, FFVII seems to dominate a lot. I hope in this case it does not, as music is much better in heaps of the other games.
Yeah, I noticed too that FFVII seemed to dominate a lot of those. Intriguing when you consider that it also had the choice for most overrated character. And not only that, but FFVII made a come-from-behind in the last edition to end FFVIII dominance. Well, say what you like about FFVII, but it certainly has its place in the minds and hearts of a lot of fans.
Thank you for putting Skirmish of the Silver Dragons in
NP, glad to do so.
And now, finally, the results for the first battle:
The Dragon Spreads Its Wings - 8
Epilogue ~ Good Ending - 5
Looked at first like the "Dragon" piece was going to be completely dominant there, but then the FFX-2 piece pulled in to make it kinda close. Close, but no cigar. The Dragon Spreads Its Wings from FFV goes on to Round 2.
Next up, from the Most Relaxing category:
Ahead on Our Way - Final Fantasy VII (This plays when you're in Kalm Town. A soothing, homely sort of theme.)
vs.
Besaid Island - Final Fantasy X (Plays when you're on Besaid Island, but not in the village, in Final Fantasy X. I've always thought it one of the most relaxing pieces in Final Fantasy.)
P.S.: I promise the next battle will not include FFVII.

Besaid Island I'm listening to the piano version right now. I agree, very relaxing.
Also I like this Edition of the FFRumble. Gives me a chance to go back and listen to some of the best pieces of music used in the FF series.
I'm gonna have to go with Ahead on our Way. It's very relaxing and the places you hear it are always peaceful in the game, whereas in Besaid you're still in danger of enemy attack while listening to it.
Also, I reckon Aria would be an excellent inclusion to the competition.

Well, leaving the battle open later than usual got one additional vote. Time to go ahead and end this one:
Ahead on Our Way - 7
Besaid Island - 6
Wow, that one ended up being very close. In the end, though, that last vote clinches the victory for FFVII's Ahead on Our Way.
Thanks to those who are continuing to nominate. For those that haven't yet, or want to nominate more, or second what's already been nominated, you're still welcome to do that in your vote. Nominated pieces (at least a couple) will start being included once there's been one battle in each category.
And now for the next of those battles, from the most emotional category:
Ami - Final Fantasy VIII (It's one of several instrumental versions of "Eyes on Me" in Final Fantasy VIII and also bears a strong resemblance to "Balamb Garden." Definitely a very emotional, purely instrumental theme.)
vs.
Melodies of Life - Final Fantasy IX (This theme is heard throughout the game before you finally get to hear the full vocal version, followed by the amazing Final Fantasy Prologue at the end. A song that speaks quite wonderfully to the story of the game. Some people say that they feel the Japanese version is way better than the English version, but I really like both.)

Ami is ok, but i feel Melodies of Life will win this because of the great orchestrals in it.
As for nominations, i guess Aria would be great in Emotional. I nominate the following for the other categories:
Joyful: Amidatti and Eleonor Too - Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (very happy music for anyone who's played it long enough to get to Shella)
Relaxing: Frontier Village ~Dali - Final Fantasy IX
Intense: Movin' - Final Fantasy VIII (includes Retaliation, but the rest of the song is intense too)

Let's see the results for this battle:
Ami - 3
Melodies of Life - 9
Ami had support, but Melodies of Life had three times more. Thanks for those who are continuing to nominate and nice to see Crystal Chronicles being requested. (I've never played it, but it's good to see some different game music being requested.) Remember, you can continue to nominate in any section until I officially announce the choice for that section.
And now, the next battle, in the Most Intense category:
Battle with Gilgamesh - Final Fantasy V (This plays several times when you fight Gilgamesh in Final Fantasy V. Gilgamesh may be kinda comic, but he can also be a very tough boss and he has an intense theme to match.)
vs.
Feel My Blade - Final Fantasy IX (This plays during the stage-battle towards the beginning of the game. It gives it a nice, intense feel, even though it's only a mock battle and there's really no danger of losing.)
Once this battle is over, we'll have had one battle in every category and I'll start mixing things up a bit. For now, though, have fun voting!

Feel my Blade, no contest.
This is actually a tricky one...i had to listen to both again quite a bit. It's quite even in my opinion. If you look at the locations of each piece of music in the game, i think gilgamesh is more intense. And let's not forget how awesome and intense it sounded when the Black Mages did it.
Therefore my vote is to Battle with Gilgamesh, which is actually called Clash on the Big Bridge on the Final Fantasy V Original Sound Version (

All right, after that brief little insertion from me, I guess I'll just end this battle:
Battle with Gilagamesh - 3
Feel My Blade - 6
Well, it looked like it was headed towards blowout for Feel My Blade at first, but then Battle with Gilgamesh (Clash on the Big Bridge) received a few votes. Not nearly enough, though, so it's the FFIX piece that goes on to the second round.
We've now had one battle in each category, so now instead of going straight down the list, I will choose the category for a battle at my whim. And the next one will be:
Most Emotional
On the Other Side of the Mountain - Final Fantasy VII (This piece plays during the Cloud flashback scenes during the flashback to when Cloud / Tifa / Tifa's friends climbed Mt. Nibel in search of Tifa's Mom and then Tifa got injured.)
vs.
Yuna's Ballad - Final Fantasy X-2 (It's a piano version of Yuna's Theme. It plays during a lot of the more emotional scenes in the game, including the Perfect Ending, or just during the The End display if you didn't get the Perfect Ending. Also during a lot of Episode Complete scenes.)
Beginning with the next battle, I will include a nomination. So if you have a nomination for any category other than this one (or want to second one that's been mentioned) post it now, because you don't know what category I'll choose next.
Well i like Yuna's Ballad better, but in terms of being emotional, On the Other Side of the Mountain takes the cake. It's not a bad song though...

It will return the Tuesday evening after Christmas, since Monday is Christmas Day observed / off-work for many people, including myself. Until then, the current battle will remain open.

On the Other Side of the Mountain - 6
Yuna's Ballad - 8
Solid competition. Yuna's Ballad pulls again and takes the win on this one.
Now for our next battle, in the Most Relaxing bracket:
A Secret, Sleeping Beneath the Deep Blue Sea - Final Fantasy VII (This plays while you're on the submarine and gives a nice, relaxing, undersea feel. It's a bit resemblant of the submarine theme from Final Fantasy V.)
vs.
Frontier Village ~Dali - Final Fantasy IX (Plays in the town of Dali. The nominated piece for this bracket.)
Frontier Village~Dali was the only piece nominated in this section. But is it more relaxing than FFVII's submarine theme? Cast your votes!
I think it's much more relaxing. Dali itself is a peaceful town that rarely sees any excitement. The music reflects this very well. Anyone can relax to this.

Let's end this one now:
A Secret, Sleeping Beneath the Deep Blue Sea - 5
Frontier Village ~Dali - 7
Very close battle! The nominated piece only just edges out FFVII's submarine theme. And next up, in the most Joyful category:
Locke - Final Fantasy VI (It's Locke's Theme. Plays, of course, when you he first appears after being asked how the "looting and plundering trade" goes.)
vs.
Ride On (Ragnarok Theme) - Final Fantasy VIII (Final Fantasy VIII's airship theme. Plays anytime you're flying the Ragnarok around the World Map. Can also be heard onboard the airship, but the noise of the ship sort of drowns it out.)

Ride On rides past Locke into the second round.
Next up:

vs.
The Skirmish of the Silver Dragons - Final Fantasy IX (A.K.A. The Assault of the White Dragons, etc. Plays when a huge bunch of dragons shows up when you're busting into Memoria. Again, quite intense.)

I'm really sorry, folks. I guess you're all aware of the server problems that have been happening lately. I really haven't felt it fair to try to have a rumble going while most people can barely get into the boards. It looks like things may be working better now --- if they continue to remain at least somewhat stable then we'll get going again soon.

All right, after giving this some thought, I've decided that there's really no way I can salvage the previous edition. I don't really recall the full details of the previous edition, or any of the competitors.
In an attempt to get things going again, I've decided that for right now I want us to do something fun. Maybe something a bit different, a bit wacky, so long as it's still workable. So for right now, I'm asking anyone and everyone to throw out your wildest ideas. At this point, feel free to toss out any wild idea you might have. We'll worry about sorting it out later.
So... have fun!

Mrm... I suppose it could possibly work. It's definitely different from the types of things we've done so far. I suppose some other things we could vote on would be battle style (i.e. summoning, blue magic, sword-fighter, or some sort of cross) and maybe even ideas for romantic interests.
We could have like one day for nominations of ideas and then the normal two days of voting.
It's an interesting thought. Anyone have any other ideas, though? Come on, be creative!
Heres a couple.

Hmm, I kinda like the favorite fighting style.
I am still interested in the create-a-character thing. The problem I'm seeing is that the Rumble is generally designed as a series of one-on-one battles. It doesn't really work as well when you mix in more choices. Any thoughts on how to get around that?
fastidious percolator
06-23-2006, 05:46 PM
Why wouldn't it work? I don't see a problem with multiple answers, really, like for this character idea: example, which haircolor; just count the votes, and then see what wins? =/
barretboy14
06-23-2006, 06:49 PM
If there's to many options then there could be ties between 3 or 4 things for example.
How bout doing it like this
ginger vs brunette = A
brown vs black = B
A vs B = the chosen piece.
Zell dincht X0
06-23-2006, 07:20 PM
what do you do about blonde?
Agent to make it even more interesting and possible easier on you.
I was thinking take current characters features. Just make a random selection of each.
for example Hair: Selphie, Quina, Vincent, Rude, Wakka, Paine etc etc and have 6 male 6 female parts. Play them off against each other
Eg
Girl vs Girl
Boy vs Boy
Then at the end we will have one "male" ff character we would like to see and one "female" ff character we would like to see. Does that help you out at all?
Agent0042
06-24-2006, 03:32 AM
barretboy has it exactly. Having that many options thins the vote and leads to problems like multiple ties or wins that don't really mean much because it's like 4-4-3-2, whatever.
OSFM --- I think I see what you're saying --- but just to be sure --- we have could have like a series of battles regarding a particular feature, using the current characters as a palette. If we had six, we could do three two-on-two battles and then once we have those results, have a single three-way battle. (I'm fine with that.) Have I got it, basically?
That was pretty much my thinking yes.
Then that would allow for one female "custom" character and one "male"
Agent0042
06-27-2006, 12:43 AM
Hmm, yeah, I'm with that.
And, in tune with keeping things fun and different, I'm gonna just draw up the battles as I go along and maybe not even go in sequence. (In other words, maybe skip around between different features.)
Let's start things off with this:
Wakka's Hair (It's orange and curves up to a single point at the top! He also wears a blue headband!)
vs.
Zidane Tribal's Hair (Never mind all that spiky stuff! Zidane ditches the ideas of his immediate "hero" predecessors, letting no cloud and no squall hinder the way he wears his hair. So Zidane's hair is sort of parted down the middle and kinda curves with the contours with the shape of his face.)
Edit:
A record of all the battles so far:
Wakka's Hairstyle vs. Zidane's Hairstyle - Wakka
Cloud Strife's Hairstyle vs. Irvine Kinnea's Hairstyle - Irvine

All right, I thought I'd extend this a bit since things just got started up again, but there weren't any extra votes. Let's wrap this first battle then:
Wakka - 12
Zidane - 5
In the battle of the hair, Wakka won pretty easily, but Zidane had some support.
All right, let's move on to another battle. How about we do some fighting styles?
Black Mage (Ah, a fighting style seen in many FF games and popularized perhaps even more by Vivi in FFIX and perhaps to a degree by Lulu in FFX. The black mage is generally weak at any sort of physical attacks, but has an array of magic spells at his/her disposal. Often these spells are of the elements. Highest level spells include Flare and Ultima, or in Vivi's case, Doomsday.)
vs.
Thief (Locke, Zidane, Rikku, etc. This fighting type may have some skill at physical attacks, but often is also pretty speedy. The thief can be a valuable asset to the party, often able to quickly build up items that would otherwise be hard to get, or perhaps couldn't be acquired at all. Stealing isn't always easy, though.)

Steiner - 12
Tobli - 4
Tobli did have a few supporters, but it's Steiner that goes on to the second round.
Let's do another fighting style battle:
Blue Magic (This fighting style allowed characters to utilize magic first used by enemies. In Final Fantasy VII it was called "Enemy Skills." In some games, only certain characters could use blue magic, in others, any character could. Quistis was an example of a character that use blue magic when the rest in the game couldn't.)
vs.
Swords (One of the most common fighting styles in Final Fantasys is, of course, with a sword. There have been lots of swordbearers and sometimes, fighting with a sword was simply a part of a job type, such as a warrior or knight.)
Sorry, no picture this time.

[In Kingdom Hearts, Cid sucks on a straw.] Cid uses his cigarette as part of his "Dynamite" limit break.)
vs.
Final Fantasy X - Auron - Sunglasses (Auron sports a pair of shades, which don't quite completely cover his eyes.)

Cid's Cigarette especially in the DoC trailers it gives him that "badass" feel.

Auron without the sunglasses is worse than Cid without the cigarette, so my vote goes to the sunglasses.
As I smoker I have to go for the Cigarette

Ooh what an interesting concept, but not a close battle. Sunglasses, because I'd love to get my hands on a pair of them.

Not a huge vote-getter this one, and yeah, not all that close. Let's go ahead and end it:
Cid's Cigarette - 4
Auron's Sunglasses - 11
Those final votes really sealed things tight for the sunglasses.
We've had a male clothing battle yet, but not a female one, so le's do one now:
Final Fantasy IX - Freya Crescent (Freya's outfit is mostly a sort of reddish orange. She wears a pointed hat and a colorful tie.)
vs.
Final Fantasy X - Yuna (Yuna's wears summoner's robes that include long pink-and-white sleeves, and a full length skirt that's blue with a star pattern.)
Sorry, but there aren't going to be anymore pictures for each-and-every battle --- it's just getting too tiresome to do. (And I know my descriptions aren't the greatest either --- but I think we all have a pretty good idea of what various characters / character traits, etc. look like.)

I'll help you out for this battle then:

">Here is a small picture of Freya's outfit.
Here is a small picture of Yuna's outfit.
With that said, I'll vote for Yuna, it has more style.
