Tantarian - 7
Which definitely proves that pure power isn't everything. The monster-in-a-book goes on to the semi-finals.
That's the end of the quarter-finals and we've now reached the semi-finals. Still in this:
Ruby Weapon - Final Fantasy VII
Omega Weapon - Final Fantasy VIII
Tantarian - Final Fantasy IX
Hades - Final Fantasy IX
FFIX bosses are still in the majority going into the semi-finals and I've decided that they should both be given a chance to make the final. Of course, that also leaves open the possibility of neither making the final. First hurdle:

I'm gonna go ahead and end this one:
Omega Weapon - 5
Hades - 5
Wow, looks like we have a tie. First time in a while we've had that. Well, the rule is that when we have a tie in anything other than the first round, we go to the results from the previous rounds to determine the tie-breaker. That shakes out as follows:
Omega Weapon - 13/16, 11/12 = 81%, 92% = 86%
Hades - 8/10, 6/11 = 80%, 55% = 68%
So our final battle of this edition:
Omega Weapon - Final Fantasy VIII
vs.
Tantarian - Final Fantasy IX
Perhaps not the final anyone would have expected, but we've had some surprising results before, after all. In terms of pure power, Tantarian is definitely the underdog here, but it's managed to beat other tough contenders to make it into the finals.

Well, doesn't look like there's going to be any more nominations. Let's get this party started. Here's the list of what's included:
Slide Puzzle - Final Fantasy I
Kefka Assault - Final Fantasy VI
Motorcycle Chase - Final Fantasy VII
Snowboarding - Final Fantasy VII
Chocobo Racing - Final Fantasy VII
Mog House - Final Fantasy VII
Triple Triad - Final Fantasy VIII
Concert Instrument Selection - Final Fantasy VIII
Tetra Master - Final Fantasy IX
Chocobo Hot and Cold - Final Fantasy IX
Frog Catching - Final Fantasy IX
Blitzball - Final Fantasy X
Sphere Break - Final Fantasy X-2
Gunner's Gauntlet - Final Fantasy X-2
Desert Digging - Final Fantasy X-2
Pirate Olympics - Final Fantasy XII
(Remember, this list is only here for reference as we start the battles --- the current results are kept on the very first post in the thread.)
Well, I think I managed to actually get in all the nominations. Obviously, this is weighted more towards certain games than others, because some of the games just had a lot more mini-games than others, and in particular, the "classics" didn't have much in the way of anything that could be called "mini-games." First battle:
Motorcycle Chase - Final Fantasy VII (The "motorcycle chase" is first played as part of the plot --- escape on a motorcycle with Cloud while protecting the trailing car with your party members from attacking Shinra motorcyclists. Hit points left at the end determines your hit points going into the battle with the Motor Ball boss at the end of the highway. Later on, this can be played as a game for points at the Gold Saucer, and a really high score can get you a "Source" item. But it's really not much help in terms of earning GP.)
vs.
Blitzball - Final Fantasy X (With Sin constantly on the attack, Spira's rather short on fun, so this was the only real mini-game of consequence in X. It shows up again in X-2, but not a lot of people like that version, so I'm not including that in this rumble. A sport played in a water-filled dome, this game is a big part of the plot, especially early-on, in X. You are required to play it at least once against the Luca Goers. The match isn't that easy to win, but winning it earns a bonus sphere item. After that, it becomes accessible from save spheres for most of the game and playing it can earn some nice bonus items, and is needed for Wakka's ultimate weapon.)
Blitzball I can see this going all the way. The only contender in my mind is Triple Triad. It's my favorite thing about X, period.

Motorcycle Chase
Even though I didn't have much fun with Blitzball, it was a decent mini-game, I suppose. At first, I was excited to play it due to all the hype. Then when the time finally came to take part in the action, I became largely indifferent toward the sport, and haven't played it since the mandatory match in the storyline.

Motorcycle Chase - 6
Blitzball - 7
Blitzball wins by just one vote. A lot closer than I think some people would have expected. I wonder how that bodes for its future prospects in this edition.
Well, for now, we continue with this battle:
Triple Triad - Final Fantasy VIII (FFVIII's card game. You're never required to play it within the game, but it's very popular among fans. The basic rules for play are pretty simple, but you can mix it up by adding in a variety of rules such as Same, Open, and Random, as well as varying trade rules. Cards that win you can be refined into useful items using Quezacotl's Card-Mod ability. Obviously, rarer cards got you better items, and there were also unique GF and character cards which could be refined into very powerful items, but at the expense of not having a complete collection.)
vs.
Frog Catching - Final Fantasy IX (Takes place at the four Qu's Marshes throughout the world of Gaia. Quina could catch frogs and in exchange, earn weapons/items for catching so many, as well as powering up hir "Frog Drop" ability, one of only a few attacks within the game that could be powered up to do a guaranteed 9999 damage. It was generally best to catch only a few frogs and leave one male and one female so that the frogs would repopulate more quickly. And there was also a golden frog, which was better not to catch, as it was bisexual and could breed with either males or females, allowing them to repopulate that much faster. After catching 99 frogs, you would get to fight Master Quale.)

All right, looks like that last vote came in just in time. I'm gonna go ahead and update a bit earlier in the evening than usual. Of course, the results on this are pretty clear anyway:
Triple Triad - 11
Frog Catching - 4
The card game from FFVIII wins by a large margin, but there's no doubt Quina's mini-game from FFIX had support.
Gluttony - that's what. And it's disgusting!
One of the Seven Deadly Sins. I happened to enjoy frog-catching, though, though I'm not sure if enjoyed it more than Triple Triad...
Well, enough of my rambling, on with the next battle:
Mog House - Final Fantasy VII (A reasonably cute bit of entertainment in the Gold Saucer, but doesn't necessarily provide any lasting appeal. In the story, you help out a little mog [moogle] named, well, Mog, who lives in Mog Forest on Mt. Mog and is pipapopupo years old [that's about 23 in human years.] He wants to win the heart of a female mog named Mag, but needs to fly in order to do so. You feed him kupo nuts [but not too many!] and once you do so, he's able to fly and they get together and live happily ever after, starting a nice little mog family. For completing it, a guy standing in front of it thanks you for it to him and gives you 30 GP.)
vs.
Desert Digging - Final Fantasy X-2 (A mini-game taking place in the Bikanel Desert. You run around and dig for treasures, hoping to obtain them before your competition. You have 60 seconds in which to do so, and you watch for Xs on the minimap. You can find treasures for your inventory, useful Key Items [including Al Bhed Primers] and components for machina weapon at the Djose Temple. Sometimes, though, you may end up in a battle instead. You have to make sure to get back to the hover before the time runs out in order for it to count as a successful dig. And you need to find a component in order for it to count. In Chapter 5, you can unlock a fun variation on this mini-game --- choco-digging!, in which you ride around on a zippy chocobo while searching for the treasures.)
This is almost an abstain. Though, seeing as I love anything about Gold Saucer that isn't Cait Sith, I'll say Mog House

Desert Digging, because you could earn pretty neat items for participating, not to mention the Al Bhed pay you for your excitement. The only things they're interested in, in regards to the excavation, are machina parts... and perhaps your safety - the parts take precedence, though; that much I'm sure of.
Anyway, the Al Bhed's true purpose, which was somewhat implied, was to create an experimental weapon, aptly named "Experiment," that they could use to rule over Spira with an iron fist, possibly due to being snubbed by the masses not too long ago.
The Gullwings, seeing as how they're Al Bhed themselves, were down with that.
______
I didn't like the Mog House mini-game at all; it's one of the low points in VII, in my opinion. Strangely enough, I love the track on the FFXI OST entitled "Mog House." It has this...

As promised, let's get our results on this one:
Mog House - 3
Desert Digging - 7
Digging game it is then.
Our next battle:
Kefka Assault - Final Fantasy VI (The closest thing FFVI has to a "mini-game," I suppose, so I'm including it. You have to make your way through groups of soldiers and guard-dogs to a final battle with Kefka. With Cyan, Gau, Locke, Terra, Celes, Sabin and Edgar, you have some leeway as to how you split up your three parties. You can switch parties when you're not in battle, but you have to be careful, and you can't let the soldiers break through and reach the top, or it's game over.)
vs.
Tetra Master - Final Fantasy IX (FFIX's card game. Somewhat more complex in terms of basic gameplay than FFVIII's Triple Triad. Unlike FFVIII's Triple Triad, you are required to play it as part of the plot in the game, though winning or losing only determines whether or not you get a certain bonus item. Also, unlike FFVIII's Triple Triad, cards can't be refined into items.)

Few votes at the end there for the FFVI mini-game-of-sorts, but it's FFIX's card game that makes it to the second round. All right, next battle is:
Snowboarding - Final Fantasy VII (First comes up towards the start of Disc 2 at Icicle Inn. You borrow the snowboard of a little injured boy and use it to make your way to the Great Glacier. The path is winding and tricky at times. What path you take ultimately determines where you end up at the Great Glacier. Once you go back to the Gold Saucer, this is available to play there at Wonder Square. You can gain access to several courses and collect balloons to earn points out of 100.)
vs.
Sphere Break - Final Fantasy X-2 (A new game that is gaining a growing following in the world of Spira in Final Fantasy X-2. Popularized by Rin, a tournament for this game is held in Luca in Chapter 3. Basically, it's a game of numerics. You select five "coins" to play with and they have numerical values 1-9. Within the game, you try to get the 'sphere break' by selecting coins until you get a multiple of the core sphere. You lose if you're unable to make that because it isn't possible with what you have left, or if you run out of time. And you can get bonuses for continuously doing it using the same multiple or with the same number of coins. Depending on the various requirements placed on the game, it can get quite tricky. But you can also win items or even rare items or Sphere Grids, and in the big tournament, winning the whole thing [with Shinra as the final opponent] earns the extremely valuable Lady Luck dressphere [but if you miss out, you can play him again in Chapter 5 to make him give it up.])

Wow. This is a very difficult choice to make.
I'm equally a fan of both Snowboarding and Sphere Break, so I'll have to resort to nonsensical reasoning.
I'm going with Sphere Break on this one, because I absolutely loved the Lady Luck dressphere (Paine), which is only obtained by way of the irritating yet fun match against Shinra during the tournament in Luca.

The results for this battle are:
Snowboarding - 9
Sphere Break - 3
The FFVII mini-game picks up a fairly easy win there. Sphere Break had its fans, but FFVII finally gets a win in this edition.
And next, we have:
Slide Puzzle - Final Fantasy I (A small unlockable mini-game you can play after defeating the pirates and getting their ship. You can win money, potions, gold needles and antidotes from this game. You have to arrange the numbers 1-8 within a time limit. I can't imagine this being too popular, but it was nominated, so here we go.)
vs.
Chocobo Hot and Cold - Final Fantasy IX (A mini-game available in three different locations in FFIX --- the Chocobo Forest, Lagoon and Air Garden. You ride around on the chocobo, searching around for hidden treasures within a set time limit. You have to pay to play, but generally the prizes are so good that you more than make up the price of admission. In addition to the prizes, you can earn points to buy more prizes, and also dig up valuable chocographs and chocograph pieces. After digging up a certain amount of chocographs within the time limit, you can get time added and start earning bonuses. A key point to remember is that there is only chocograph hidden at any given time.)

That's a blowout condition, we can end this. The chocobo mini-game rockets through to the next round.
Our next battle is:
Chocobo Racing - Final Fantasy VII (Place your bets! Chocobo racing takes place in the Chocobo Square in the Gold Saucer. When you first visit, you're welcome to place bets on C Class races featuring other racers for the potential to win prizes. But the game really takes off once you get the Highwind and can return to the Chocobo Ranch near Midgar to start breeding your own chocobos from chocobos you've caught in battle. Then, entering in the races, you can race them up to as far as S Class and win exciting prizes as well. However, it can take a long time to train chocobos, and the racing can get somewhat monotonous at times.)
vs.
Pirate Olympics - Final Fantasy XII (A foot-racing game that I suppose it somewhat similar to FFIX's Hippaul race. You race using "circle" and "X" to turn right and left. You initiate the race by talking to Rikken in Balfonheim Port. There are a total of 100 levels with escalating prizes, the best being 10,000 gil, 2 elixirs and an unpurified ether.)

Seems people liked chocobo racing, though perhaps not some of the sound / music that goes with it.
Oh, lookie, we've reached the final battle of the first round. Which is this:
Concert Instrument Selection - Final Fantasy VIII (This is another one of those sort-of mini-game things. The deal is this --- Selphie's been organizing a concert as part of the Garden Festival for Balamb Garden. When Squall is declared to be the new leader, she and the others decide to go ahead with it to try to cheer him up. Thing is, Selphie has this great composition [an instrumental version of "Eyes on Me"] that was recommended to her by the last producer. But when the Garden started moving, the four scores got mixed up with four from another composition [an Irish jig]. You take on the role of Irvine to select who should play what instruments. You're also actually free to leave the stage area as Irvine, and go exploring FH and the Garden for some dialogue you wouldn't normally get. Your choices here influence the outcome of a later scene between Squall and Rinoa.)
vs.
Gunner's Gauntlet - Final Fantasy X-2 (A game that you're first challenged to by Beclem in Chapter 2. You make your way through Besaid as Yuna, gunning down enemies and picking up ammo along the way. You don't want to be attacked, because you'll lose your chain and could eventually lose the game. Advance to earn prizes, and upgraded abilities, such as special types of ammo like Dual Shot and Volley. Prizes include, among others, a couple of Garment Grids, and the best prize is Adamantite. This is a powerful and unique accessory --- truly unique, because your Gunner's Gauntlet score carries over into New Game Plus, so you can only ever earn it once. There's a way to "cheat" at this game --- a "blind spot" area where you can fire from without fear of attack. Oh --- and there's a second version available inside Besaid Temple, but the prizes aren't very good.)

Well, looks like only one more voter took advantage of the extra time, and just under the wire. Let's get those results, then:
Concert Instrument Selection - 6
Gunner's Gauntlet - 3
And so the "mini-game" that isn't even so much a mini-game manages to make it as the final entrant into the second round. And here we go with it. Let's take a look at what's left:
Snowboarding - Final Fantasy VII
Chocobo Racing - Final Fantasy VII
Triple Triad - Final Fantasy VIII
Concert Instrument Selection - Final Fantasy VIII
Tetra Master - Final Fantasy IX
Chocobo Hot and Cold - Final Fantasy IX
Blitzball - Final Fantasy X
Desert Digging - Final Fantasy X-2
Well, looks like we have a fairly varied selection here. A mix of some quite popular choices and a couple that are a bit more surprising. Time to start thinning out that herd, so let's get going on the second round with this battle:
Triple Triad - Final Fantasy VIII ("Hey, have you heard? There is a card club here, AKA the CC Group. They're bunch of card maniacs looking for worthy opponents day and night. Consider it an honor to be challenged to a game by one of the CC Group members.")
vs.
Tetra Master - Final Fantasy IX (Regent Cid: "Since when am I your pet!? <Gwok!>" Erin: "Well, you ARE an oglop right now, after all..." Regent Cid: "Silence! <Gwok!> I'm the champion! <Gwok-gwok...> No one understands..." Father: "I heard the champion is a master of winning games with oglop cards... Her name is... 'Erin the Oglop Master'...")
Only one of the two card games will grab a spot in the semi-finals! Cast your votes! (And remember, you can always check the updated standings in the first post in the thread.)
O-ho. Excellent. I like them both, but it is no secret that Triple Triad wins hands down.

I'm going with Tetra Master, I've played over a hundred games of it (and won) and I am only missing about 4 or 5 cards. Collecting the cards was probably my favorite sidequest of the game and then beating everybody who plays. Triple triad is also great put except for combos it seems pretty simple to understand. I never understood the point system for the Tetra Master card game but I still almost always won.

Battle of the card games, let's do the results:
Triple Triad - 7
Tetra Master - 6
O-ho! What a great battle. Triple Triad wins, but only by one vote and continues to the semi-final battles.
And next is:
Snowboarding - Final Fantasy VII (Elena: "Looks like talking alone won't cut it. You're going to have to feel some pain!" Guard: "Just you... and me!!" Elena: "No, I can handle him! There's no way he can avoid my punch. What? Yeah......" Guard: "Ele... Elena!?" Lookout: "What the...? They sure were weak for Shinras. Sorry I just took off a while ago... It looked like there was going to be trouble. Anyhow, you'll need a snowboard to get down that hill. Want me to teach you to ride one?")
vs.
Blitzball - Final Fantasy X (Tidus: "Wakka..." Wakka: "Hm?" Tidus: "Praying for victory's all good...but is this right?" Wakka: "Something wrong with enjoying blitzball?" Tidus: "Is this really the time?" Wakka: "This is the only time! The players fight with all their strength; the fans cheer for their favorite team. They forget pain, suffering... Only the game matters! That's why blitz has been around for so long. Least that's what I think." Tidus: "Whatever you say." Wakka: "Let's play...and win! Right?" Tidus: "Right!")
Oh my, once again an EPIC INTERNET BATTLE :D I like so many of the mini-games and seeing them up against one another is rather disconcerting.

vs.

So after a very close battle to start the round, we've had two complete wipeouts. Looks like things could be very interesting for the semi-finals. We have one battle left, though, before we do those. Will it be another blowout, or a fierce battle? Let's see the contenders:

Oh yeah, getting back to the other thing, there are many different types of Chocobo jockeys. It's not only for criminals. Some people compete for the fame, some people compete for the money, some only for glory... And then there are people like you.")
vs.

Selphie: "Oh, sorry, Rinoa, but you're not gonna be a member." Rinoa: "You're leaving me out?" Selphie: "Uh-uh. We have something more important for you to do." Zell: "So what are we gonna do? Well, here we are --- the semi-finals! Let's take a look at the four mini-games left:
Chocobo Racing - Final Fantasy VII
Triple Triad - Final Fantasy VIII
Chocobo Hot and Cold - Final Fantasy IX
Blitzball - Final Fantasy X
Remember, the list above is just to update what's left --- you can find the updated record on the first page in the thread. First battle to determine our finalists:
Triple Triad - Final Fantasy VIII ("Hey, heard you've been playing some good games. Sure, you wanna play? What? The CC Group? Yeah, I'm a member. I'm Card Magician 'Joker'. As my name says, I'm the black sheep of the group.")
vs.

All of these fine teams, equally renowned, deserve to win the cup today. Such is the nature of this contest. Well, we've reached the final battle and both of these two have been awesome contenders up to this point, so I'd be quite surprised if there was a lopsided victory in this case. Here we go then:
Chocobo Hot and Cold - Final Fantasy IX (Fat Chocobo: "Only chocobos can live here." Mene: "...No exceptions?" Fat Chocobo: "No exceptions..." Mene: "...Choco..." Yuna: "That was the Jecht Shot, wasn't it?" Tidus: "How do you know that?" Yuna: "Sir Jecht showed it to me when I was a child. He called it the 'Sublimely Magnificent Jecht Shot Mark III.'"
