Time to bring this battle to an end, I think...
Demon Gate - 2
Sorceress Edea -9
Demon Gate gets a couple of votes, but Edea is far and away the favored choice here. She moves onwards to the second round. And congrats to Final Fantasy VIII, which with this victory scores a clean sweep with all four of its bosses moving on the second round.
Let's move onwards ourselves to this battle...
Kuja - Final Fantasy IX (Considering only the battle against him at the end of Disc 3. As far as battles go, this one isn't necessarily too rough. The main thing to watch out for is being worn down after the previous battles with the Silver Dragon and Garland. You might also want to have Zidane steal his items, which include Caribini Mail and Light Robes. According to the Boss FAQ at GameFAQs, Kuja actually only uses two attacks-- Thundaga and Demi. It's just enough to make him a trifle dangerous, but really, this battle is just a lure to get you to attack him such that he builds up enough of a rage to go into Trance, as evidenced by the comments he makes throughout the battle. Once he Trances, he uses Ultima, an admittedly stunning move that knocks your entire party flat.)
vs.
Lani - Final Fantasy IX (IX vs. IX- why not? Lani shows up in Fossil Roo, looking to seize Dagger/Garnet for Queen Brahne, following the party's grand escape from Alexandria. In this case, Lani actually likes to focus on attacking Dagger. She swings a huge axe, but she's also a fairly decent magic user, using Aera, Water and general second-level elemental magics. She has a Coral Sword and a Gladius to steal.)

DNS was down last night, so I decided not to update. Let's go ahead and get this updated now:
Kuja - 5
Lani - 5
It looks like we have a tie. In that case, we will go to coin-toss. And it comes up... Kuja.
Next up...
Hojo - Final Fantasy VII (He actually has three different forms, but since you face them all in succession, we're going to consider them all together. Got that? Good. His first form is nothing to write home about, but he does have a couple of monsters with him to try to trouble you up. The latter forms are mainly about troubling you with abnormal statuses and strong physical attacks.)
vs.
Seymour Flux (Seymour is another boss that troubles you with a number of forms. We've got that contrast thing going here though in that Seymour appears at various points throughout the game, rather than in several forms in one go. For this battle, we'll just consider one of those forms-- Seymour Flux. He appears as you're climbing Mt. Gagazet and is supported by Mortiorchis. Seymour uses Banish on any aeons you summon, so they're only good for one turn before he says "Death awaits you!" and finishes them off. This form of Seymour uses Lance of Atrophy, which can cause Zombie status and then uses Full-Life, which will KO the character if they're in Zombie status. He likes to Dispel characters' beneficial statuses and Mortiorchis can hit with a powerful physical attack called Cross-Cleave. Also, past a certain point, Mortiorchis goes into "Auto-Attack Mode" and this is the lead up to a spectacular attack called Total Annihilation which hits multiple times and can basically well, totally annihilate all but the most amazingly souped-up party.)

Hojo it is then, by a hefty margin. I didn't realize Seymour Flux had only one vote.
Final battle of the first round!
Flame Eater (This is a substitution! Gigantos had this slot, but I realized that Gigantos is actually an optional boss. As I had said before that I would not be including optional bosses in this, it wouldn't do to have him, having realized this. So this is the substitution. You fight Flame Eater in the house in Thamasa after running through a gauntlet of fire. Flame Eater is, of course, weak against ice-based attacks. Still, your party consists of only Strago, Locke and Terra, so you may have to strategize some, particularly if your magic isn't up to snuff.)
vs.
Leblanc - Final Fantasy X-2 (For this battle, considering only the final encounter with her in her Chateau. She has a spell called "Not-So-Mighty Guard" but don't be fooled-- it places her, Ormi and Logos under Shell, Protect and Regen and therefore is definitely of benefit to them. Her support abilities also include White Wind, Osmose and the infamous "Love Tap" to haste Ormi or Logos. Her attack types include grenades with status effects as well as a Mach Fan that hits and delays your party. Finally, she can combine with the other two for the No Love Lost attack, their best special.)

Time to go ahead and end this and get the second round started:
Flame Eater - 1
Leblanc - 7
An easy victory for Leblanc over FFVI's Flame Eater.
The first round had its surprises, but I'd say on the whole weeded out a lot of the weaker entrants. So I'm looking forward to good battles for the second round. Let's see what's left...
Gilgamesh - Final Fantasy V
Kefka (Narshe encounter) - Final Fantasy VI
Atma Weapon - Final Fantasy VI
Materia Keeper - Final Fantasy VII
Schizo - Final Fantasy VII
Hojo - Final Fantasy VII
Biggs and Wedge - Final Fantasy VIII
Fujin and Raijin - Final Fantasy VIII
Sorceress Edea (G-Garden encounter) - Final Fantasy VIII
Adel - Final Fantasy VIII
Beatrix - Final Fantasy IX
Ark - Final Fantasy IX
Kuja - Final Fantasy IX (Going on to Round 2
Yunalesca - Final Fantasy X
Leblanc (Chateau encounter) - Final Fantasy X-2
Mandragoras - Final Fantasy XII
First battle of the second round:
Biggs and Wedge - Final Fantasy VIII (Biggs: "...But I hope you appreciate our position. Hey, it's a dog eat do..." Wedge: "Uh, they are fully armed, sir..." Biggs: "W-WHAT!? H-Ho-How...? Ahh, hell with it! Let's go, Wedge! ... I was demoted because of you! ... I'm only a lieutenant now! ...I'll get my revenge!")
vs.
Yunalesca - Final Fantasy X (Mika: "Why are you here? You must go and defeat Sin, quickly! You have obtained the Final Aeon from Yunalesca, have you not?" Tidus: "Well, we did meet her." Yuna: "We fought and defeated her." Mika: "What!" Auron: "Summoners and guardians will be sacrificed for the Final Summoning no more!")
Biggs and Wedge were hilarious as comic bosses, which no doubt accounts for their presence here in the second round. But are they a match for the three-form epic Yunalesca battle? Cast your votes!

As the general of Alexandria, what is your sworn duty!? Isn't it to protect Dagger--your Princess Garnet? I'm sure you know who's sitting over there." Beatrix: "It can't be... So despite the extra time, not even close for Biggs and Wedge, really. They get a few votes, but Kefka, as fought in Narshe, moves on to the semi-finals. So long to FFVIII's comic duo.
Next up...
Materia Keeper - Final Fantasy VII (Tifa: "If the Mako Reactor countinues to suck up the energy, this fountain will dry up too..." Sephiroth: "Materia. When you condense Mako energy, materia is produced. It's very rare to be able to see materia in its natural state." )
vs.
Sorceress Edea (Ultimecia) (G-Garden encounter) - Final Fantasy VIII (Sorceress Edea: "Worthless child." Squall: (...The [auditorium] is right below.) Seifer: "There's no way you guys can beat her.")
Materia Keeper is the only non-human boss left in this battle. Will it perish like the others of its kind have in this rumble? Cast your votes!

Seems non-humans just can't hack it in this edition of the rumble. Sorceress Edea moves on and the last "monster" type of boss is outta here.
Next up:
Gilgamesh - Final Fantasy V (Gilgamesh: "Crap. Alright, for today, you are lucky, I'll let you go.")
vs.
Kuja - Final Fantasy IX (Kuja: "... H-Ha ha ha... What an interesting lie. You're telling me that my life will end soon? Ha ha ha... Nice try, Garland, but I won't fall for your silly tricks... Garland? ... Garland!? Answer me!" Garland: "You were created to destroy. You are a mortal...")
And just to keep things clear-- in considering Gilgamesh, you're considering the overall merits of all fights with him. With Kuja, however, you're only considering the fight at the end of Disc 3, the one that comes after Garland.

Final battle of the quarter-finals...

Sephiroth: "A man once told me never to use an unscientific term such as mysterious power! It shouldn't even be called magic! I still remember how angry he was." Cloud: "Who was that?" A surge of sympathy for Hojo leaves these two in a tie position. When that happens in a later round, we have to look to the results of the past rounsd to determine the winner. And we have...
Hojo - 10/11, 4/4
Adel - 5/9, 9/11
Well, I don't even need to run the calculations. Though he only just barely made it here, Hojo had pretty much universal support when he was up before, even if the number of votes on one particular battle was pretty thin. He goes on to the semi-finals.
Gilgamesh - Final Fantasy V
Kefka (Narshe encounter) - Final Fantasy VI
Hojo - Final Fantasy VII
Sorceress Edea (G-Garden encounter) - Final Fantasy VIII
And how different the layout looks now. FFVIII has gone from dominating this edition to having just one competitor left in it. Will that competitor remain? It's time to find out in the first battle of the semi-finals...
Kefka (Narshe encounter) - Final Fantasy VI (Arvis: "Banon!" Banon: "Our blood will spill because of you. Emperor Gestahl's racing to acquire Magitek power. He's set his sights on the Esper that was found here! The increased use of Magitek power'll surely lead to global destruction..." Elder: "The War of the Magi... The mythical battle that set mankind back a thousand years. Can this really be happening? People will never learn...")
vs.
Sorceress Edea (G-Garden encounter) - Final Fantasy VIII (Irvine: "The sorceress should be here somewhere." Squall: "(No turning back now...) Forget about the past! She's our enemy now! Don't think twice for a second. There's no way we can fight her like that. I, for one, can't. She chose to fight and became our enemy. We chose to fight back. We have no choice. At least I'd like to think so. (Seems like I'm the only one confused...) We've come this far. I guess there's no need for me to say anything.")

And so the madness of Kefka comes to an end for this edition. Which I guess will be all right with him, anyway, since his theme won the last edition of the rumble. (That is, if anything is ever "all right" to a maniacal madman, other than total domination.)
Let's find out who will be joining Edea in the final...
Gilgamesh - Final Fantasy V (Gilgamesh: "Lenna, never forget your love for animals." Lenna: "..." Gilgamesh: "Butz, someday I'd like to fight you one-on-one! You were such good friends." Necrophobia: "Gilgamesh, DIE!" Gilgamesh: "That's MY line.")
vs.
Hojo - Final Fantasy VII (Tifa: "Look, look at that!" Cloud: "Hm...? That girl in the bikini......? Not a bad view...." Tifa: "What're you looking at? That man over there. That's Hojo from Shinra. Get outta here. Go talk to him!" ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Aeris/th: "Professor Hojo.... Is Jenova an Ancient? Is Sephiroth an Ancient? Do we all have the same blood?" Not a lot of votes there, but Gilgamesh takes the crown on that one. Well, this is it then. We've made it to the final edition of the second Bosses edition of the Rumble, the brawl for it all. Ultros from Final Fantasy VI won the first Bosses edition. In the left-hand corner...
Gilgamesh --- Largely a comic boss, though he can still sometimes be a fearsome opponent. Regardless of what you think of him, he has come through some tough battles to be here in the final. He shows up at various points in the game and even helps your party at the end-- tired of being messed around and being ExDeath's flunky. But does he have what it takes to be the winner of this edition?
And in the right hand corner...
Sorceress Edea (G-Garden Encounter) --- Sorceress Edea bursts onto the scene in Timber and immediately becomes a figure of fear. What you don't know for a good while, though, is that Sorceress Edea is actually a kindly woman who nevertheless has sorceress powers. She doesn't actually have any ambitions to rule a nation, etc. etc., instead she's being possessed by a sorceress from the future named Sorceress Ultimecia who is searching for a girl named Ellone so that she can attain "time-kompression." For this particular edition of the Rumble, we've only been considering the battle with Edea in Galbadia Garden-- the big one in which, afterwords, Edea is finally freed from Ultimecia's control. Based on this battle alone, does Edea win the title?
So there it is:

So what's next? Well, unless somebody else has some other really exciting idea, I think I'd like to go with an idea suggested by Zak just before this most recent edition started-- blue magic / Enemy Skills. There's a lot of good ones and I think we can have a good mix of ones both used throughout the series and ones unique to specific games. In the meantime, feel free to chat about this most recent result, etc., and the next edition should get started soon...

I keep a running record of the current edition as well as the final results of past editions in the first post of the thread. Just jump right back into the start and you'll see the full list... looks like we've had nearly thirty editions to date. Wow.

All right-- new edition starts sometime tomorrow. Won't say exactly when-- it'll be a surprise! :) In the meantime, if anyone has any nominations, go ahead. I've noticed we haven't done too much by way of equipment. There's a weapons rumble but there have been some cool armours and accessories in the FF series that could justify a rumble of their own.
I realise Blue Magic is going to win the most nominations this time, but it might be worth considering for a future rumble.
Agent0042
10-17-2008, 12:56 AM
We're past the "nominating a category" stage, actually-- we're definitely doing Blue Magic. In fact, it would have started yesterday if the server hadn't been acting up again-- I don't like starting the rumble (especially the start of a new edition) when things are messed up. In any case, this will be starting a bit later this evening. Doesn't look like there's any nominations for Blue Magic, so I hope everyone's satisfied with my choices, though you still have a couple hours if there's something you absolutely must see.
And yes, accessories/armor, etc. is definitely something to consider for the future.
Agent0042
10-17-2008, 03:40 AM
Right, let's get this show on the road! My general assessment was that 32 should work okay for this edition. 16 would be way too few, but 64 would just end up including a lot of really junky stuff that nobody would be likely to vote for. So here's what we have. I've got two sections, the general stuff that's in more than one FF and then the specific stuff unique to some individual games...
White Wind
Mighty/Big Guard
Aqualung / Aqua Breath
Lv# Death
Lv# Confuse
Doom
Blowfish / 1000 Needles
Micro Missiles / Black Shock / Dischord
Roulette
???? / Revenge
Magic Hammer
Fusion / Pep Up
Bad Breath
Laser / Missile
Grand Train - Final Fantasy VI
Quasar - Final Fantasy VI

Frog Song - Final Fantasy VII
Shadow Flare - Final Fantasy VII

Shockwave Pulsar - Final Fantasy VIII
Frog Drop - Final Fantasy IX
Limit Glove - Final Fantasy IX
Night - Final Fantasy IX
Angel's Snack - Final Fantasy IX
Jump - Final Fantasy X
Thrust Kick - Final Fantasy X
Stone Breath - Final Fantasy X + X-2
Nova - Final Fantasy X
Cry in the Night - Final Fantasy X-2
Annihilator - Final Fantasy X-2
First battle...
Blowfish / 1000 Needles (An ability most often associated with cactuars, though for some reason in earlier FF games it is called "Blow Fish." Final Fantasy V and VI let you use this as blue magic and it's available to Quina in IX. It's a Blue Bullet in X-2. It also becomes a Technick in XII, though that's not actually blue magic. Anyways, this skill reliably deals 1,000 damage, so it's useful if you can get it early, or if for some reason you have need to do exactly 1,000 damage to an enemy.)
vs.
Stone Breath - Final Fantasy X + X-2 (One of only maybe two or three blue magic type spells available only in both X and X-2, but not in any other FF, as far as I know. One of the more useful ones too. Will petrify/shatter all targets that can be affected by that. One particular instance it's useful is in NSNSGNC game in X against the Guado guards in the Macalania Temple.)
And so, there we go. Some cool spells in the mix and there should be some exciting battles. Cast your votes!

Let's end this one:
Blowfish / 1000 Needles - 9
Stone Breath - 1
Stone Breath only manages one vote. Guaranteed 1,000 damage definitely appealing.
Next battle...
Magic Hammer (To my knowledge, this one is present in both Final Fantasy V and VII. The basic gist of it is that you can siphon off the enemy's HP, which can be useful if you're dealing with a powerful magic user, such as Godo in the Wutai Pagoda. Curiously, this skill works differently in FFVII depending on whether you have the PC or Playstation version. In the Playstation version, it absorbs the enemy's HP, but for those with the PC version, it only drains it.)
vs.
Limit Glove - Final Fantasy IX (A powerful Blue Magic ability of Quina's. If Quina's HP is 1, then this skill deals a guaranteed 9999 damage. Can be manipulated by killing off Quina, saving and then reset as necessary until a Phoenix Down revives hir HP to 1. Useful skill for an Excalibur II or general low-level game.)
