So the final total on this battle is...
Big Whale - 5
Ragnarok - 8
The Ragnarok takes it to the second round, but it was hardly a blowout. In fact, it's an exact match of the result for the last battle. Wonder how this fares for the FFVIII airship in future rounds.
Well, that's not for right now. Right now, we've got another first round battle to do, so let's get straight to it:
Tiny Bronco - Final Fantasy VII (A small plane crafted by Cid in this game. It's nothing on the order of any sort of airship and even if it actually flew, you probably wouldn't be able to board it or anything. As it is, though, you can't fly it because when your party tries to take it and keep it away from the Shinra, it ends up crashing and is only usable as a boat, which can traverse coastline areas and rivers. Still, it's enough to access most major areas of the world, with the exception of Mideel, the secret island areas and most of the northern continent. The Tiny Bronco is generally extremely slow to pilot, as you have to navigate your way around various coastlines to get to where you're going. It disappears [presumably seized by the Shinra] once you obtain the Highwind aircraft.)
vs.
Hilda Garde III - Final Fantasy IX (One of two airships that you gain control over in this game. As previously mentioned, the Hilda Garde III is constructed partly of parts from the ship Blue Narciss after Regent Cid regains human form. The original Hilda Garde airship was stolen; the second was constructed by Cid while he was an oglop and thus unstable. The Hilda Garde III can land anywhere on land except desert areas. It's a bit on the slow side, though. AS mentioned with the Ragnarok, it includes the auto-pilot feature.)
Oh, BTW, congrats to Sobye, who managed to obtain the 3000th post in this thread (assuming you don't count all the posts that were lost during the forum hack.) I thank everyone for their continued support. This thread is now nearly as large as original thread (
Thread 12615), before it was closed because it was taking forever to load (that issue seems to have been resolved now, so I don't think we'll need to close this one.)

And this battle ends with these results:
Tiny Bronco - 5
Hilda Garde III - 12
Nice turnout, thanks. The Hilda Garde III moves easily to the next round, but Tiny Bronco, somewhat surprisingly to me, definitely had its supporters.
All right, the next battle is:
Rental Car - Final Fantasy VIII (A rather unique vehicle in the Final Fantasy series and one rather suited to the nature of FFVIII. Rental cars generally require one or more of the Fuel item in your inventory to run. You get to control cars [which I guess aren't so much rental] for free when headed from Balamb Garden to Balamb for the big SeeD mission, and later with Selphie to the Missile Base. Otherwise, cars can be rented in major towns. You don't get into any battles while trundling about in a car, which may not be the best idea if you want to maintain your SeeD rank.)
vs.
Recovered Airship / Fahrenheit - Final Fantasy X (An airship salvaged by the Al Bhed, you visit the ruins of it with Rikku towards the start of the game. Later on, you board this airship when the Al Bhed have to abandon and destroy Home --- and Cid uses some pretty powerful forbidden machina on the ship to do it. You use this ship to search for and find Yuna and go out onto the deck for some major battles, including the one with the Evrae wyrm and later Sin. Once again, the ship's artillery comes in handy. The ship also has a powerful intercom system that is used to pipe the Hymn of the Fayth to the citizens of Spira, who rally to the call to join in. The "Fahrenheit" name, which I just recently learned about, comes from the game's Ultimania translation.)
Rental Car, and I'll tell you why: X's airship marked the first time that airships were no longer under your control, and that was heartbreaking to me :(

Rental Car wins, but in many cases it seemed to be largely a vote against the first-ever airship that you couldn't take control of to pilot around the map.
Next battle up is:
Submarine - Final Fantasy VII (Another quite unique vehicle within the series and your opportunity to trundle about under the sea. There are actually two different submarines you can get --- a gray one and a red one. You get the gray one if you succeed at the submarine mission, but if you lose, you can go back and get the red one instead. You are required to use the submarine to acquire the Key to the Ancients. The submarine can also be used to access the sunken Gelnika, to get you to Emerald Weapon, to recover Huge Materia [if you succeeded in the sub mission] and to access the secret cave with Lucrecia [though that can also be accessed with a mountain chocobo.])
vs.
Invincible - Final Fantasy IX (You get control of this airship after using it to flee from Terra. You only have command of it on Disc 4, so your time with it is really quite limited, and in fact, the only time some gamers may use it is when they fly to the gateway to Memoria to head off for the final battles. It's someone zippier than the Hilda Garde III, though it's also kinda, um... spooky to some players, being the ship with the giant "eye" that caused such destruction. Unlike the HGIII, the Invincible can land in desert areas, allowing you to access areas such as the island with the Yans, which is otherwise only accessible with a gold chocobo.)

And the results on this one are:
Submarine - 5
Invincible - 11
Pretty typical of the type of results we've been getting so far for this edition. Well, we have two battles left to go before we reach the second round. Here's the first of those two:
Blackjack - Final Fantasy VI (The first airship you attain control of in FFVI. Being Setzer's airship, it's loaded up with card tables. There's also some merchants there who give you options to rest and do some shopping. This airship breaks up in two and is lost when the World of Balance ends. But you need to reach it and wait for Shadow in order to save him.)
vs.
Buggy - Final Fantasy VII (Once you win the chocobo race and free yourself from the Desert Prison, Aeris/th calls up on the PHS and announces that Dio gave your party a buggy. The buggy can cross desert areas and shallow rivers. Also, you can even drive into Costa del Sol and then stowaway on the Cargo Ship and it'll come along with you. You get into battles while riding the buggy, but not as many as you would if you were hoofing it, since you move around so much more quickly. If you try to drive the buggy past Cosmo Canyon before completing the events there, it breaks down. You can't take the buggy past Nibelheim, but you can come back to it once you get the Tiny Bronco. Like the Bronco, it disappears [presumably seized by the Shinra] once you get the Highwind.)

So we have:
Blackjack - 10
Buggy - 5
"The Amish" Buggy goes down, though not by a huge margin. We've reached the final battle of the first round:
Balamb Garden - Final Fantasy VIII (This "vehicle" gave you an unusual amount of access for something that wasn't an airship. Balamb Garden is the school Squall + Co attend, which trains SeeDs. They didn't have any idea it had mobile capabilities, but when Sorceress Edea sends missiles at it, they have to do something to save it. So Cid sends Squall and his party to check into something he had heard about and they discover it used to be a mobile shelter. Balamb Garden can travel land and sea --- basically as long as there's a coastline then you can access it. Nida is the pilot. Eventually, you get into a thrilling confrontation with Galbadia Garden. After you get the Raganarok, you can still go back to Balamb Garden if you want --- it'll still be docked at Fisherman's Horizon.)
vs.
Strahl - Final Fantasy XII (Balthier's airship. You first use it early in the game, though you don't actually take command of it. Towards the very end of the game, you gain access to it and a series of Anchors are set up which can be used in conjunction with the Gate Crystals. But you don't actually ever get to go aboard it.)
Balamb Garden. Home, sweet, home.

The Ragnarok does it again, zipping on the semi-finals. But it was definitely a competitive battle. Will the HGIII be the toughest competition the Ragnarok had to face, or might it still go down. We'll see...
Regarding the time issue, I haven't yet heard back from the two people I most wanted to hear back about it from --- beat and Xandy, so I think I'll hold off until at least the end of this next battle before making any solid decisions about it.

Balamb Garden - Final Fantasy VIII (Nida: "Squall! Get back to the [bridge] right away!" Squall: "Zell, I'm counting on you. Good luck, everyone." Zell: "Time to get it ON!")
vs.
Ragnarok - Final Fantasy VIII (Quistis: "I wonder if we can get through." Irvine: "Ahh, don't worry about it." Quistis: "Are the machine guns and main cannon ready?" Selphie: "Rrready! Let's just fire like crazy and make a big hole, BOOM!")
The clash of FFVIII. This should be an interesting one indeed. Both of these have had great support, but which actually comes out on top?

Balamb Garden
The surreal Balamb Garden has: attractive female coeds, impeccable architecture, overrated hot dogs, otherworldly music round-the-clock, and Xu (she could've been easily grouped with "attractive female coeds," but personally, I believe she merits special mention).
Vote for it.
Now from a technical standpoint, the Ragnarok is clearly the superior mode of transportation; however, in order to acquire that sunuvabitch, you had to battle with a color-based, husband/wife team of Propagators (one after the other, mind you) - 4 times overs, and sustain through a mind-numbingly bad tune (fucking Nobuo).
If you were to literally immerse yourself into the game, which would you choose?
Superficiality is the way to go!

Ragnarok - 8
Whoo! Tie situation! Who could have predicted this? All right, this battle is ended, I'm on a break for work right now and I'm not sure I have time to process the tie and start the next battle. So watch for an edit to this post --- either in a few minutes, or a few hours...
Ragnarok - 8/13, 10/17 = Whatever, not calculating, obviously too low...
Balamb Garden - 11/11, 8/8 = 100%
All right, the results are obvious, looks like you guys gave lots of love to Balamb Garden in previous rounds. And so in of our biggest upsets to date, the Ragnarok is out.
Falcon - Final Fantasy VI (Edgar: "This is THE Falcon?" Setzer: "I put it in storage. I couldn't bear to look at it. But now it just may save us... The Falcon.")
vs.
Invincible - Final Fantasy IX (Kuja: "It's so beautiful... Alexander...the legendary eidolon... So, you wish to defend the castle with your brilliant wings...? How admirable... Your powers even transcend Bahamut's... Alexander, I've been waiting for you. I've called a magic carriage for you. I'm sure you'll like it. Invincible, come forth! You're mine, Alexander!")

Falcon - 6
Invincible - 10
Captain America - 1
Good battle, Invincible goes on to the next round. Oh, and that's the Final! Well, let's take a look at it:
Balamb Garden - Final Fantasy VIII (Squall: "We're moving!?" Headmaster Cid: "I see...So this is the secret..." Rinoa: "...Wow!" Irvine "...This is amazing..." Zell: "Oh man...! This is awesome!")
vs.
Invincible - Final Fantasy IX (Kuja: "Hahahahaha! This is too easy! The Invincible is mine! Now, I have the power to control all souls! Garland gave me everything without a fight. The old fool was too busy dealing with him. Now, only death awaits him. Poor Garland... Bitten by his own dog... This is no accident. Fate has chosen me to become the new ruler of Terra! Time for me to put on the finishing touches.")
Airships have generally been favored in this edition, but Balamb Garden has pulled off some big wins and has been this edition's "Cinderella story." What will be the final results here? Cast your votes!

All right, so the results on the final battle of this edition are:

Invincible - 5
Our winner, then, by a large margin:
Balamb Garden
Well, there you have it. In the edition where many thought the airship Ragnarok seemed sure to win, it didn't even make the finals. Instead, congratulations to the winner --- a completely different vehicle from that game - Balamb Garden --- the mobile school whose rediscovered capabilities saved it from a devastating missile attack.
Stay tuned in a couple days for the next edition!

All right, I said before when I first did the categorized music that if it was popular enough, I might do it with the same themes. The record for most of that edition got lost to the forum hack, still, I'd like to do it again. Though not with the original entrants, 'cause even though the record was lost I still feel it would feel like a rehash. So just to refresh, the original categories were Most Joyful, Most Relaxing, Most Emotional, and Most Intense. The original entrants are listed on the first page of the thread --- nominate me anything that isn't on that list if you want to see it included. New edition will start in about 24 hours from nominations and what I add in to fill out the remaining entrants.

FFVIII's "The Winner" only manages to grab one vote and so it's "The Splendid Performance" on to the second round. Next up, from the Most Relaxing Category:
Farm Boy - Final Fantasy VII (This tune is heard in the Chocobo Ranch. It's also used during the portion of the flashback sequence with Zack and Cloud while they're on the road to Midgar. A vocal version of this tune is featured on Uematsu's Final Fantasy Songbook album.)
vs.
Eiko's Theme - Final Fantasy IX (Eiko's theme music is used at several points throughout the game. It's heard throughout the various Eiko ATE scenes in Madain Sari. A version of it that also includes elements of "Melodies of Life" is heard during her sequences at the start of Disc 3 in Alexandria Castle.)
