An easy win for "Don't Be Afraid."
And that's the closing bell on the second round! Here's what's left for our Quarter Finals:
Don't Be Afraid - Final Fantasy VIII (Eliminated in the Quarter Finals)
Hunter's Chance - Final Fantasy IX

"Evil Mist" wins by a comfortable margin, but it was generally agreed that it was a good / tough battle.
Final battle of the Quarter Finals:
Hunter's Chance - Final Fantasy IX (Dagger: "COME ON, VIVI!!! YOU CAN DO IT!" Steiner: "No! Master Vivi! Dagger: "Look out! Oh, gosh! I can't watch anymore!" Steiner: "YOU CAN'T WIN JUST BY RUNNING! A GOOD OFFENSE IS THE BEST DEFENSE! ATTACK! You can't lose to that monkey Zidane! YES! THAT'S IT! NOW'S YOUR CHANCE! ONE MORE TIME! VIVI, BEHIND YOU! YES! GO!")
vs.

Okay, this round is ending, so let's get the results and see what's been chosen as the last entrant for the Semi-Finals...
Hunter's Chance - 5
Waltz for the Moon - 4
By a margin of just one vote, it's "Hunter's Chance" hanging in there. Will it be able to make the final battle? Semi-finals, coming up now...
Hunter's Chance - Final Fantasy IX (Eliminated in the Semi-Finals)
The Man with the Machine Gun - Final Fantasy VIII (Going on to the Final)
Mystery Sword - Final Fantasy IX (Going on to the Final)
The Evil Mist's Rebirth - Final Fantasy IX (Eliminated in the Semi-Finals)
Final Fantasy IX has really cleaned up here, with three of its tunes in the semi-finals. So first up...
Hunter's Chance - Final Fantasy IX (Breeder: "This year's specimen is perfect. Nothing can stop him! Ha ha ha! What power!" Soldier: "Hey, make him stop! It's too early to let him loose!" Breeder: "How? I have no control over him." Soldier: "Dammit! Open the gate at once! The gate's gonna fall apart!" Breeder: "GO, ZAGHNOL!")
vs.
Mystery Sword - Final Fantasy IX (Zidane: "Think you can get away?" Beatrix: "Get away? Hahaha. You're a bigger fool than I imagined... Have you forgotten how badly I beat you back in Burmecia?" Freya: "So, you are more of a fool for not finishing what you started!" Vivi: "You're gonna pay!" Quina: "I find no tasties in this town, so we cook you for breakfast!" Beatrix: "Then allow me to shatter your delusions of grandeur. ... ... No more games. ... Stock Break. ... ... I shall leave with the jewel now.")
Mystery Sword like there is any competition between them.

Okay, end of first semi-final...
Hunter's Chance - 1
Mystery Sword (or "The Sword of Doubt," as some are fond of) - 8
It would seem that "Mystery Sword" truly can't lose, or at least for right now. We'll be finding out soon if it can win the whole thing, but for now, we've got another semi-final battle to do...
The Man with the Machine Gun - Final Fantasy VIII (Laguna: "Seriously, I have a BAAAD feeling...! There's somethin' fishy goin' on here! You know what the old folks say... The unfamiliar always happens..." Kiros: "You mean...'unexpected', right?" Ward: "You only got the 'un' part right." Laguna: "Aah, shut up! Stop your clamorin' and make sure all your gear's equipped. Now, let's move out!")
vs.
The Evil Mist's Rebirth - Final Fantasy IX (Zidane: "So what do you say, Rusty? Friends? Come on, let's enjoy this camping trip while it lasts." Steiner: "Camping--you imbecile! Surely even you must know something about the Mist! The vicious monsters it spawns! The abnormalities it stirs in the mind and body! Princess, we must leave this dangerous place at once.")
Will this be an all FFIX final battle, or does the FFVIII Laguna battle tune have what it takes? Cast your votes?
P.S.: As I mentioned in an earlier post, the theme for the next edition is quotes. I've already started putting together a list of past favorite choices based on results in the sectionalized rumbles, but you're welcome to do nominations as well. Remember, if you don't nominate, then you can't complain later if your favorite isn't included. I'll be including nomination spots as well, but this is your early chance to get something in. I'll take pretty much anything except quotes from XII --- I think it's generally agreed that it's too early for that. However if you have something from something like Crystal Chronicles, Tactics, Tactics Advance or XI, I'm perfectly willing to add it in.

Oh--and I have, like, this awesome idea for the next general FF rumble!
Should I PM it to you, Agent0042? >> Or should I write it somewhere here?
I looked over the previous ones, and it hadn't been done yet....
Ohhh, what the heck...! I'll just write it here....
After this, I think it'd be great idea to do Spell Effects and animation!
There could be subcategories, too..."Best Overall", "Best Sound", "Most Innovative", "Most Devastating-Looking"...>> Or stuff like that....
I'll upload short clips onto YouTube, too! Since there are many spells that people may not have seen many times due to lack of use, or anything like that....
But the reason I chose this is that some of the spell effects of some magic is very wonderfully done...some are very creative...and some I just like to cast because I love the sound it makes....
Quite a bit of time is spent on some spell animation, too! But they're often overlooked due to the more flashy and lengthy 'overdrives'/limits or summons....

Okay, we are moving on to the next addition, which is quotes. You guys have posted some great nominations. I've found quite a few good ones myself, so while I may not use all of your nominations, I will definitely include as many as possible. I am also including one additional nomination spot for each section. So if anyone has anymore nominations, submit them along with your vote. If nobody else nominates for a particular section, I'll use the nominations previously posted, if there are any for that section. If not, I'll make the selection myself. Oh, and I've decided that to simplify things, I'm only going to do quotes from FFV - X-2. Those that nominated anything from another game --- don't worry. I promise I will do one that includes those eventually.

Rikku: But Wakka, that's just totally wrong! Summoners shouldn't have to sacrifice themselves...just so the rest of Spira can be happy, right?
Isaaru: But that is our choice...
Dona: We all live in fear of Sin. You know that.
Isaaru: A world without Sin... That is the dream of all Yevon's children. And we will use that power, even if it means our lives!

I Hate Hate Hate You - 3

The "hate" quote had support, but "She Follows Her Heart" wins by three votes. And next up...
Final Fantasy VIII - Chicken Wuss
Seifer: Ha ha, this is great! I've got a chicken-wuss and a guy that's just reached puberty in my squad!
vs.
Final Fantasy IX - What it Really Means to Die
Vivii: Mr. 288 told me that I understand what it means to live and to die... But it's only because I thought stopping was different from dying... I don't think I really understand what it means to live and to die. Where do we come from...? Do we go back there when we die...? If that's what it means to live... I wonder where I came from...? Where will I end up when I die...? Why am I shaking...? What is it that I'm feeling...?
It's comedy again (and surprisingly popular comedy too) vs. serious. Which will win?

Wow. Wasn't expecting a tie. Well, the rule for the first round on this one is when we're in a tie situation, whichever one was winning before the tying vote came in goes through. And in this case, that would be Respect Points. So the FFX-2 quote squeaks it by one vote!

Final Fantasy V - The Legend of the Crystals
In the beginning, there was Void. Then four Spirits came. Together in this Void, the Crystals were born and the world was created.
Thus, Hope gave the Earth blessings, Courage lit the flame, Kindness made water as a source of life and Quest let wisdom ride upon the wind.
When the void endangers the world again, the evil that was sealed away will be reborn. If within people live the four spirits, Light shall again be born.

Baralai: It was power... And we misused that power. We turned our friends and followers against each other.
Nooj: Forgive us. (He, Baralai and Gippal bow.)
Baralai: Somehow we forgot. There's a much larger ship out there. One we've been riding ever since we were born. That ship is Spira.
Nooj: No one knows just where our voyage will lead us. But we do know one thing: One way or another, we will get by. We'll go on living. The Calm will continue.

Final Fantasy X-2 - Believe With Me
Yuna: One thousand years ago, before the time of Sin... Spira was torn in two, divided by a terrible war. This was Spira's great mistake. Out of the rift left by this terrible conflict, Sin was born. In only two short years, Spira has shaken off its unhappy past. We have moved on. Now, Spira grows brighter with each passing day. That light is our strength. I don't want to see it fade. Do you? There are so many of us, each with different ideas and different beliefs. Of course we sometimes disagree, and arguments will happen. But our hearts can and should always be one. (Lenne joins.) How would you have me do it, Prak? Flip a coin? Cast a vote myself --- when I'm already the one who determines the matchups? Wait for somebody else to vote?
Well, that depends on how you determine the pairings. If they're random, then there's no problem with you having a vote you can use to break ties. That's the way I've always done it in my own rumbles. Of course, if you choose the pairings, then that's a horse of another color and I don't really have an answer for you.
Just saying it's something for you to consider.
Agent0042
01-10-2007, 04:52 PM
I choose the pairings myself to make for what I think would be better battles, but I also acknowledge that can occasionally lead to some bias in the selection. Which is why I have never voted myself in my own rumbles.
I suppose I could try the tie-breaker selection some other way, but I'm not really sure what would be fairer. With the way I'm doing it now, it's like if one is winning and the other one ties, then it's like sorry, but that's not quite enough. If you see that your choice is tied and I suppose if you really want it to win, go see if you can recruit somebody else to vote for it before I make it in to post the next battle.
Well, my problem with that method is that it implies that all votes are not equal. If there's a solution, however, I don't know it. I guess it's just a tough situation.

Cloud: I've... been thinking too. About the universe... planet... ocean. How wide and big... No matter where I go and what I do it won't change a thing.
Cid: Maybe you're right. But I came up with something different. I always thought this planet was so huge. But lookin' at it from space, I realized it's so small. We're just floatin' in the dark. ......kind of makes you feel powerless. On top of that it's got Sephiroth festerin' inside it like a sickness. That's why I say this planet's still a kid. A little kid sick and trembling in the middle of this huge universe. Someone's gotta protect it. Ya follow me? That someone is us.
Tifa: Cid... that's beautiful.
Barret: Yo! Cid! You even got to me! Do, now what? How're we gonna protect the planet from Meteor?
Cid: ...............I'm still thinkin' about that.
I'll vote for Doesn't Make Me any Less Important, because it's better than Cloud being emo and Cid pulling a hackneyed excuse for caring about the world out of some amateur writer's ass.

Doesn't Make Me Any Less Important, though if memory serves, Faris implied something far more sinister than being 'laughed at' if the pirates found out she was a girl...
Doesn't Make Me any Less Important. Its not that special but a lot better than I Came Up With Something Different

I know. I'm gonna have to try to find a better script. So many of the translations of FFV online are weak, or lame, or stupid (or all three.) I've been trying to locate a better one, but so far I haven't had any luck.
Anyway, carry on...

Well, the results on this are pretty clear, so let's get back to the normal schedule:
Doesn't Make Me Any Less Important - 6
I Came Up With Something Different - 3
The FFV quote goes on to the second round.
Next up:
Final Fantasy VI - Call Me a Treasure Hunter
Merchant: You're that thief, Locke, aren't you?
Locke: Hey! Call me treasure hunter, or I'll rip your lungs out!
vs.
Final Fantasy X-2 - Lucil's Speech
When the Calm arrived two years ago, it echoed deep in the hearts of Spira's youth. With Sin's defeat, we had lost not only our mortal enemy, but also our purpose in life. I, too, felt lost. I did not know what direction to take, where to channel my energy. It was Meyvn Nooj who guided our lost generation to a new purpose: to uncover Spira's true past. This is the same man who was once called Deathseeker, who made no attempt to hide his despair. What caused Meyvn Nooj to change? That is not for us to know. Nonetheless, under Nooj's leadership, we finally found a way to apply our strength. But look at us now! The power we hoped to use for good has intoxicated us all. Even Nooj. The Youth League is in danger of becoming a mindless band of thugs that know only violence. A power that destroys rather than creates. Without meaning. No better than Sin. Do you remember why the Youth League seeks the truth behind Spira's past? Because Spira's past is the foundation for its future. Our power exists so that we may cut a new road, to a new age. An age where children will never have to lift a sword!

Call Me a Treasure Hunter; it was brief and pretty amusing whereas Lucil's Speech is just long winded and takes way too long to get the point across.
