And we have a winner!

What it Really Means to Die - 5
First Act: The End of Ugly Desire - 8

It was a good final battle, actually kinda close, but our big winner here is:

First Act: The End of Ugly Desire

Oh, dear... The princess has such a bloodthirsty little puppet.

All right, well that's it for that one. Thanks to everyone that participated that time around, and that voted in this last battle. Unless somebody else comes up with a way better idea, I like that idea for a Monster Design rumble, although I think I'll simplify to simply coolest Monster Design. Assuming that's what we're going with, I'll get it started tomorrow. Until then, anyone that wants can feel free to celebrate or gripe about the results of this edition here.

As for FFVI --- yeah, we did have a Kefka quote in this one --- his ranting at the end of the game about creating a monument to non-existence. But I think it lost in the first round.

Oh, and one final thought before I go:

All right, let's get this show started. Coolest monster design it is. Here's the list for that edition:

Drakes - Final Fantasy X / X-2
Nomination Spot 1

A wide variety of beasts, to be sure. Most of them have a tendency to come up time after time, but I've tried to include a few that seem more unique. I've left quite a few nomination spots, as there are surely quite a few favorites I've left out, so remember to make some nominations, unless you just want me to make the rest of the choices! Remember, this list is only here to give you a look at what monsters are going to be battling --- for the updated results, you can always check the first post in the thread.

First battle:

Bomb - Many FF Games (Oh my goodness, it's a bomb! These monsters have appeared in various forms in many Final Fantasies, going at least as far back as FFV, though possibly earlier. Bombs in Final Fantasy games often have a short fuse and will explode, heavily damaging your characters and robbing you of a proper victory, if you don't defeat them fast enough. These monsters also often have a tendency to attack in packs. As far as their design goes, they have appeared in various colors and some types of mutated bombs can become quite huge.)

vs.

Magic Pots (Ah, these little critters. A friend to many FF players. Generally, you give them an elixir and then you can attack them with impunity to receive a bounty of EXP / AP / gil, etc. The rewards and what you have to do can vary from game to game. Monster design, looks like, well, a fancifully colored pot. And within it is a little gremlin. [And not a drug with mystical properties, as one might think. :D])

Remember, you are voting on what you think of the overall monster design for that type of monster.

Please don't post in a thread for the sole purpose of "bumping" it, without conveying any other useful information. I mean, I could almost understand if it had been like a week since I last posted a new battle, but come on. Anyway, battle over. Let's get the results:

Bomb - 7
Magic Pot - 3

A fairly easy win for the "Bomb" monster. It goes on to the second round.

Next up:

Cactuar - Many FF Games (The cactuar is one of those iconic Final Fantasy creatures. It is sometimes a foe, but can be friendly from time-to-time as well. Cactuars generally look sort of like mini-cactuses, almost kinda cute at times. But some of them have the potential to grow to massive size. Known for their "1000 Needles" attack, or the far-more-dangerous "10000 Needles" for some of their larger counterparts.)

vs.

Chimera - Many FF Games (This colorful creature has three heads. The three heads grant it a fierce ability set. Their size can vary based on the type of the creature. Hagrid from the Harry Potter series once expressed a desire to have one of these as a pet.)

All right, before we continue, I wanted to apologize for any confusion. This edition is only for non-boss monsters. Sorry for not being clearer about that, but Tiamat, Gilgamesh, both bosses, generally, so not eligible. I welcome any other nominations that aren't bosses.

And now, the results on this battle:

Cactuar - 14
Chimera - 2

Chimera (which yes, was in X) couldn't overcome the massive popularity of the Cactuar which moves easily into the second round. All right, we continue. Next up:

Ochu - Many FF Games (These nasty suckers are a sort of giant mutated plant. They're tentacled and can inflict multiple status effects. They're large, overgrown, and can prove a significant challenge / obstacle.)

vs.

Yan - Final Fantasy IX (I guess it looks sort of like a little pug dog with horns? This was one of several monsters in FFIX that also came in a "friendly" variety. But when it's not friendly, don't be fooled by appearances. It's a vicious brute with powerful attacks and magic and the ability to expel characters from battle.)

Heh, the "poor man's Malboro." Yan wins big-time, but it wasn't quite a blowout as it was beginning to look like it was going to be.

It's time for another battle. This one will be:

Tonberry - Many FF Games (This harbinger of death usually carries a knife and/or a lantern. Greenish and ominous, this is another of those iconic Final Fantasy monsters.)

vs.

Pupu - Final Fantasy VIII (Ah, now here's a funny one. This little alien crashed its spaceship after you chase after it in several battles. You can either fight it, or help it out. It's a weird, but kinda cute little blue alien thing.)

Tonberry - 14
Pupu - 2

Our little alien friend got some support, but Tonberry was the run-away favorite here and easily sails to the second round, looking strong for future rounds.

And our next battle:

Bunny - Many FF Games (Bunnies have actually popped up as monsters in a number of FF games. Sometimes they will heal you, but they can also be hostile. As far as appearance goes, they are often very cute. But they can also have an evil look to them at times. I know bunnies in battle in at least four FF games --- VI, VII, XI and XII.)

vs.

Bird - Many FF Games (Now here's a rather general classification. Birds have popped up in a number of forms in battle in FF games. They range from massive winged beasts, to small, nimble winged sorts. Some of them have some very complex and varied designs.)

Given the initial voting, this turned out to be a much closer battle than I expected it to be. Time to bring up the final tally and find out the results:

Bunny - 7
Bird - 5

Bunny takes this one, but Bird put up a much better fight than expected.

Adamantoise - Many FF Games (These massive tortoises have been around in many FF games. They are generally large, well-armored, and can sometimes come in various forms. This type of monster classification is also sometimes referred to as "land turtle.")

vs.

Hexadragon - Final Fantasy VIII (Dragons come in so many forms in Final Fantasy, but rather than trying to lump this into one category, I just picked out this memorable dragon. This unusual dragon has six eyes and is otherwise blue and black. [Note that the one in the picture has suffered an unfortunate run-in with Odin.])

Chocobo - Purely because it has gone through many stages of design throughout the FF Series and theres a lot more to it than Iron Giant.

Agent0042
03-14-2007, 05:08 AM
Looks like we had a really good battle here, let's get the totals on this:

Iron Giant - 10
Chocobo - 7

When it comes to design, the Iron Giant beats the chocobo in the voting.

All right, we're starting to get down to the wire here for this round, but we've still got a little bit to go. Beginning after this battle, I'm going to start mixing in nominations, so this is your final chance to make a nomination. Remember, only normal monsters, no bosses/special battles.

Flan - Many FF Games (Colorful, amorphous, squishy blob monsters. They come in many different colors and sort of wobble and slink. They range in size very small to ridiculously large.)

vs.

Mover - Many FF Games (They generally come in packs of three. They are spherical and often orange.)

Mickrulz

I honestly don't like either of them, but the Flan is lucky, since it is competing against nothing more then a red ball.

Yeah, Mover got whipped quite thoroughly, but if it had been a true blowout, I would have ended it before now. Final results:

Flan - 18
Mover - 1

Folks turned out in droves to vote for the squishy goodness that is the flan --- it speeds on to the second round. Next up is:

Mu - Many FF Games (The Mu is a sort of little squirrel / fairy-like creature that has appeared in several FFs. It's small and can be kind of cute. In FFXII it's actually considered a sort of dreamhare, but it can't rightly be classed as a bunny overall.)

vs.

Bandersnatch - Final Fantasy V and IX (A nominated choice. A massive, weird shaggy dog-type creature with a curly tail. Random trivia --- the name of the Bandersnatch originates from the work of Lewis Carroll and this was not the only FFIX monster to have that honor --- the Jabberwock(y) appears as well. Some guides I have seen also consider to be monsters such as the Kalm Fangs from FFVII to be a form of this monster.)

Mu battled fairly well throughout, but the Bandersnatch just had more support and goes on to the second round.

And next battle is:

Coeurl (Many FF Games) (This panther-like monster has been in many Final Fantasies. It is whiskered and sleek in design.)

Elnoyle really pulled back a bit towards the end there, but it wasn't nearly enough. The "constipated imp" never really stood a chance, Coeurl moves on to the second round easily.

Next up:

Malboro - Many FF Games (No wannabe here. This is the Malboro. The evil-looking green plant thing with big teeth.)

vs.

Ninjas - Final Fantasy V and VI (They look like, well, ninjas. I guess we could include VII as well if you count Yuffie, who you can battle.)

Oh, based on some of the comments I saw, I think I'd better be more diligent about posting this reminder:

Ninjas just can't beat the mighty Malboro, which I get the feeling could be a strong contender going into the finals. That's in the future, but for right now, we need the final results on this blowout:

Malboro - 9
Ninja - 0

A quick and easy clean sweep. Let's see how things progress with this next battle, however:

Behemoth - Many FF Games (The large, hulking Behemoth has been a staple throughout Final Fantasies. Some are larger than others and come in various colorings and markings, but overall they all share the same basic form.)

Worm - 10
Lamia - 8

Following a string of early votes for Worm, Lamia just couldn't recover, but put up quite a fight. So it's Worm on the second round for best design.

We continue with...

Dinosaur - Many FF Games (Dinosaur-type monsters have been seen in several FFs, but perhaps most notably FFVI. Many will also remember FFVIII's T-Rexaur [pictured].)

vs.

Zombie - Many FF Games (Ghouls, zombies, whatever you may call them --- a very, very common monster class. These undead humanoid, ghoulish monsters roam around, harassing your party. I don't think their appearance really varies much from game-to-game.)

Dinosaur easily the more popular choice, it goes on to the second round. And it just so happens that we've very nearly reached it. Here comes the last battle of the first round:

Stroper - Final Fantasy V and IX (A massive many-tentacled monster. A nominated choice. Pictured via Tetra Master card.)

vs.
