Summons was already done in another rumble within this section. It's old news, anyway, I'm not doing summons here. We can worry about thoughts for other editions later, I suppose. Anybody else have anything else they want to throw into the mix here as far as what we've been discussing?

All right, tell you guys what. Let's get this mini-rumble started. And to keep things interesting, the full list of entrants will not be revealed in advance. So let's start with this here:

Jumbo Cactuar

(Well, you guys know the score. It's a massive cactus. It's got a mustache thing going.)

vs.

Behemoth King

(Sorry I couldn't get a bigger picture. It's a larger, more fearsome version of your standard Behemoth. I must say, it definitely looks impressive.)

Mega Tonberry

(The Mega Tonberry is seen in Final Fantasy X-2. There's also the Tonberry King from Final Fantasy VIII. Anyway, this sucker is massive. Huge, colossal tonberry.)

Great Malboro

Mega Tonberry - 12

A landslide victory for Mega Tonberry. And next up is:

Let's do this next:

Elder Drake

(This ultra big-drake can really get in your way in X-2's Via Infinito. It's the biggest Drake you'll ever see. I couldn't come up with a picture, but I think anyone that has encountered this one will probably remember it.)

vs.

Lv. 99 Red Chocobo

(This elusive chocobo in FFXII can be really hard to find. Very rare chance of showing up. So I'm wondering if it even has a shot. Especially given that there are still many folks here that haven't played XII or haven't cracked a lot of its secrets yet. Perhaps the fact that I was able to come up with a picture on this one will provide a slight advantage...)

All right, let's do this:

Elder Drake - 7
Lv. 99 Red Chocobo - 2

Very easy win for the Elder Drake. All right, this is here is going to be the last battle of this round, then we move straight into semi-finals for this little mini-edition:

Ruby Dragon (I just didn't feel right not having a proper dragon in this. So let's try this again with Ruby Dragon. You are required to fight this massive dragon at least once in Final Fantasy VIII. Kiros and Ward are supposed to wear a costume of it, but instead, the real deal shows up. A couple of these suckers also guard the way to Bahamut, and ultimately, Ultima Weapon.)

vs.

Grand Dragon (Ah, all right, tricked ya'. So one good dragon deserves another. This particular dragon, "Grand," can be fought in two different locations in FFIX. It's great for leveling up, though, remember, of course, what you're voting on.)

Remember, you are voting based on what you think of the monster's overall appearance / design.

I just find Grand Dragon's overall design to be very dull, and it's an almost classic representation of what dragons are thought of appearing as, in most people's minds.

When I had first saw a Grand Dragon in FFIX, I didn't think: "Wow! That's a groovy design." It was more along the lines of: "Okay, I'm dead now (at least the dragon looked tough), and to think, they've piqued my interest after all those Kupo Nuts that were given to them by me."

I'm not a fan of dragons in the first place, so yeah, bias won in the end.

Agent0042

The Gil Turtle from FFV, from what I recall, is canonical. The "Gil Snapper" from FFXII probably originated to some degree from it.

Anyway, yeah, optional bosses sounds like it could work. I've been trying to avoid things that were done back in the old "Champions" Rumble that we used to have going here, but I don't think that one ever did optional bosses. So we could do that. All right, yeah, let's go. If anyone has any other nominations, post them between now and Monday evening. Things get started then, so if you don't nominate, I just add in stuff myself to round things out.

Ruby, Ultima, Omega weapons. Also Hades from FFIX. if we're including any form of monsters from the Monster Arena in FFX, then we could include Nemesis as well.

Neg
06-03-2007, 05:40 AM
Nemesis is an Omega, of course he's in. Well I would think, it's up to Agent, of course.

Sure. Let's just not go overboard on the Monster Arena "bosses," okay? Otherwise, I have no problem with it.

Doggoneus
06-03-2007, 11:39 PM
BIG optional bosses. Nemesis would be in as he's the top dog (of monsters in the arena). Not just any optional boss, but the big/tough ones, the ones seen as a challenge. This would mean only the top ones on the monster arena, just like it would mean only the later marks in XII.

I suppose you could do the dark aeons in X seperately, but many won't know them, and people would choose the higher dark aeons over the lower dark aeons (dark bahamut over dark ixion for example). Definately put penance in though.

This is the second time my idea has turned into a rumble :D excellent.

Agent0042
06-05-2007, 01:36 AM
Yeah, I think it would probably be preferable to pass on the Dark Aeons, but Penance, sure, okay.

Anyway, absolute last chance for nominations before I start things up later tonight. So if anyone still has any...

Agent0042
06-05-2007, 04:42 AM
All right, let's get this party started. Optional bosses rumble, commence:

Omega - Final Fantasy V
Shinryu - Final Fantasy V
Ruby Weapon - Final Fantasy VII
Emerald Weapon - Final Fantasy VII
Ultima Weapon - Final Fantasy VIII
Omega Weapon - Final Fantasy VIII
Ozma - Final Fantasy IX
Hades - Final Fantasy IX
Quale - Final Fantasy IX
Tantarian - Final Fantasy IX
Shinryu - Final Fantasy X (Monster Arena)
Nemesis - Final Fantasy X (Monster Arena)
Penance - Final Fantasy X (International)
Trema - Final Fantasy X-2
Angra Mainyu - Final Fantasy X-2
Paragon - Final Fantasy X-2

Yes, I know a couple choices were left out, but I decided to go with only sixteen because I didn't have enough material to make 32 and there were some choices that weren't mentioned that I thought were important inclusions. Well, let's get going with the first battle:

Emerald Weapon - Final Fantasy VII (A WEAPON released by the Planet, storming the seas of Final Fantasy VII. Available only by running into with your submarine. Those that have fought this menace are almost certainly aware of its Aire Tam Storm, a powerful attack that always does 9999 damage to all three members of your party. Or does it? Astute observers will note that "Aire Tam" is actually "materia" backwards. The attack does 1111 damage for each materia orb a character has equipped. Emerald is made up of several sections and its other attacks include Emerald Shoot, Emerald Beam, Revenge Stomp and powerful attacks from "eyes" that can drain both HP and MP. P.S.: You are limited in the time you have to fight this battle unless you equip the "Underwater" materia. And for winning, you receive the Earth Harp, which you can exchange for a set of Master Materia.)

vs.

Tantarian - Final Fantasy IX (A monster in a book, the Tantarian in FFIX is something of a throwback, one of the game's many nostalgic references to past FFs. In this case, the "Page" monsters found in the Library of the Ancients in Final Fantasy V. Anyway, the Tantarian can be something of a tough nut to crack, especially if you choose to take it on the first of two times it's available to battle. Tantarian uses the attacks Paper Storm, Edge, Doom and Poison. It's best to try to get it to reveal its physical form and then attack with magic. It has several valuable items to steal.)

I'm interested to see how this one goes. The Emerald Weapon seems like a shoo-in from a pure power standpont, but FFIX has a lot of fans here and the Tantarian may be a surprise favorite. Cast your votes!

And we have:

Emerald Weapon - 7
Tantarian - 7

Wow, first battle and first tie. Well, when there's a tie in the first round, we go to a coin-toss, as was determined a while back. So it'll be heads for Emerald Weapon, tails for Tantarian. And we have... tails. So Tantarian it is.

Also, Omega Weapon in Dirge of Cerberus (not VII proper) is NOT optional, as previously noted.
Fixed. I meant to put Ultima Weapon, but then I realized that one isn't technically optional either, since you have to fight it at least once. So I just went with FFVIII's Ultima Weapon instead.

Interesting. I always thought of Emerald Weapon as vaguely female, myself. After all, ships at sea and stuff are supposed to be female. But whatever.

Anyway, next battle...

Omega Weapon - Final Fantasy VIII (Omega is feared for his most powerful attack --- the incredibly damaging Terra Break. It can also use the Medigo Flame, which is 9998 damage on all, and Gravija. Not to mention it always starts the battle with L5 Death. And that's only some of its attacks. You don't really get much for winning this battle, other than Three Stars and the Proof of Omega.)

vs.

Trema - Final Fantasy X-2 (The final boss of this game's Via Infinito dungeon. Trema has 999,999 HP and is an incredibly fast attacker. He has a swift set of physical attacks, including one that can cause Stop status. He also has access to powerful magic such as Meteor and Ultima. Common strategies against him involve draining his MP so he can't use the powerful magic. For winning this battle, you receive the amazingly powerful accessory Iron Duke.)

And this battle wraps up with:

Omega Weapon - 13
Trema - 3

Rather a walkover there, but not a complete shutout. The unsent Yevonite had a few supporters, but FFVIII's powerful Omega Weapon blasted its way to the second round.

And our next thrilling conflict:

Quale - Final Fantasy IX (Currently paired up with Vivi over in the FFIX Rumble, Quale is also competing here as an optional boss. In order to fight Quale, you have to use Quina to catch 99 frogs within Gaia's various Qu's Marshes. Once you've done this, Quale will appear and engage Quina and the rest of your active party in a battle. This fight isn't quite as easy it may seem though. Of particular interest is that Quale has some awesome items to steal, including the rare Robe of Lords. Quale can inflict various status effects such as Mini, Confuse and Silence. S/he has 65535 HP and also uses water-based attacks. Still, s/he shouldn't be too tough if you're well-prepared. You receive an Elixir for beating hir, as well as the Bistro Fork. Defeating hir "completes" this particular sidequest, though you're welcome to keep catching frogs.)

vs.

Shinryu - Final Fantasy X (Monster Arena) (Shinryu is an underwater boss available as unlockable creation in Final Fantasy X's monster arena. As an underwater battle, you're required to fight this using Tidus, Wakka and Rikku. Shinryu counterattacks with a powerful claw after being attacked. Shinryu's most vicious attack is Eraser, which petrifies a character. And since you're underwater, that character gets shattered. Otherwise, it just uses a normal attack and attack called Shining that hits all three characters for random damage. Did I mention that it has 2 million HP? You get 30 Megalixirs just for unlocking it. You can steal Gambler's Spirit or Three Stars from it and winning the battle grants you the powerful Wings to Discovery.)

And we have another tie. This is getting to be like a habit. All right, heads for Quale, tails for Shinryu, and we have... whaddya know. Heads it is. So it's Quale to the second round. Must say, much better battle than I expected. I wasn't sure how much support Quale had.

Well, on we go, next battle...

Omega - Final Fantasy V (FFV's Omega. I'm not sure, but I think this may have been the first-ever Omega. Its attacks include Surge Beam, Atomic Ray, Malestrom, Delta Attack and Circle, among many. It has a wide variety of attacks and is definitely an extremely powerful foe, especially if you're not prepared. In particular, you want to guard against fire damage. For beating it, you receive 100 ABP, 50000 gil and the Omega Medal. P.S.: There's an even more powerful version in FFV Advance, but I'm not covering Advance here because so many people [including myself] haven't played it yet. Of course, there are plenty that haven't played V anyway, but whatever. Their loss.)

vs.

Ruby Weapon - Final Fantasy VII (It terrorizes the sands surrounding the Gold Saucer. It can use Whirlsand to remove characters from the battle, but you can avoid this by going in with two characters KOed. It can do counteratttacks and also access to the Enemy Skill Shadow Flare. It also often uses Comet2 and can counterattack Knights of the Round with Ultima. However, a common strategy for beating Ruby involves W-Summoning KoTR in conjunction with Hades, which is surprising effective at stopping Ruby Weapon cold. For winning, you receive the Desert Rose, which can be exchanged for a craptastic gold chocobo. And a bunch of AP/EXP, etc. etc.)

Gonna go for a somewhat unusual afternoon update here, change things up a bit. Our final results on this battle:

Omega - 4
Ruby Weapon - 5

VII's Weapon wins this time, just narrowly. All right, and next up:

Penance - Final Fantasy X (International) (It has 12 million HP and for the most part, top flight stats. [Exceptions being a Luck of only 10 and an Evasion of 0.] It also has two arms with 500,000 HP each. You have to defeat all of the dark aeons before you can fight it. Its attacks include Judgement Day, Oblieration and Imoliation. Oh, and it has a second form too. It's a long, drawn out fight and obviously some major strategy is involved. And a lot of grinding character-building in order to even stand a shot. Big disadvantage --- International isn't available except by import in the United States, so many have never faced this sucker.)

vs.

Angra Mainyu - Final Fantasy X-2 (This menace prowls the sands of the Bikanel Desert in X-2. Though it shows up before then, you can't officially defeat it until Chapter 5. A monster sealed by the cactuars in the ancient past, it has risen again to take advantage. You gather the ten Gatekeepers to raise the Great Habib, but it simply turns its menace on the Al Bhed camp. It has 333,444 HP, 9999 MP and a variety of sinister attacks. Its most powerful attack is the dreadful Perdition's Flame, which hits all of your characters multiple times. It also has access to Flare, Demi and Bio among others. Oh, and let's not forget that it has two extensions --- Tawrich and Zarich. Tawrich's Bloody Breath causes multiple status ailments and Zarich has Glimmer of Despair, which reduces both MP and character stats. All three parts move extremely fast. Even if you kill off Tawrich and Zarich, Mainyu has the ability to restore them with Full-Life and can also cure them.)

Angra Mainyu - 2

So, despite the disadvantage of being from a game that a lot of people don't have access to, Penance goes on to the second round. We're more than halfway through, but we still have a few battles left. Let's continue with:

Shrinyu - Final Fantasy V (It's Level 97 and has 55,500 HP. Its attacks include Maelstrom, Tidal Wave, a powerful physical attack, Snowstorm and several blue magics. A standard strategy against is to equip Coral Rings and two-hand Dragon Lances, then simply leap and crush it. Anticlimactic, really, but it polishes him off instantly. For winning, you get the Dragon Seal and Ragnarok.)

vs.

Hades - Final Fantasy IX (An optional boss along a secret path in Memoria. He has 55535 HP and is Level 92. Hades has several useful items to steal --- Robe of Lords, Battle Boots, Running Shoes and Reflect Ring. For winning, you get Elixir and Wing Edge. Hades has access to Curse [multiple status ailments]. He also uses Vivi's most powerful magic --- Doomsday. His Cleave attack hits for powerful physical damage and Judgment Sword reduces a single characters' HP to 1. An interesting thing to note is that Hades will know if you have already beaten Ozma, and seem, well, rather shaken about it. If you beat Hades, he opens the best synthesis shop in the game. Here, you can synthesis the Pumice, Save the Queen, the tin Armor and other such items.)

A walkover, pretty much. Hades is on to the second round, but the dragon boss from FFV at least had a bit of support. Two battles left in this round. First up:

Ultima Weapon - Final Fantasy VIII (I suppose FFVIII's Ultima Weapon is something of a warmup act for Omega, but that's not to say it's not a reasonably tough battle. Its best move is Light Pillar, which instantly KOs a single character. [9999 damage] It also uses Gravija, Ultima, Meteor, Quake and a fairly strong physical attack. Its weakness its low HP, which allows it to be taken out fairly quickly. But as it's at the bottom of the Deep Sea Research Center, it's quite a chore just getting to it. You can draw the GF Eden from it. Additionally, it has the magic Ultima available to draw, so you may want to take the opportunity to stock up. For winning, there's a high, but not 100% certain chance that you'll receive 100 Ultima Stones.)

vs.

Paragon - Final Fantasy X-2 (A weapon-type monster in Cloister Infinity of Bevelle's Via Infinito. Most dangerous attack is Big Bang, which can do 99,999 damage to YRP. Definitely to be avoided. Also uses Genesis and other powerful attacks. Interestingly, like the other weapons in this game, this sucker has an Oversoul form that behaves rather differently from the normal form. You have to face this before fighting Trema. Oh, you can learn the Blue Bullet Supernova. And if you return to Cloister Infinity, it'll be there to face again.)

I was, for the most part, not impressed with VIII's Ultima Weapon at all, seeing as how I defeated it on only one try, and as Agent pointed out, its low HP is a major weakness, so the battle is a breeze (or it should be), esp. at that point in the game.

Paragon's not necessarily tough either, but at least it takes a semblance of effort to defeat it. Plus, its design is much cooler than any other Weapon-type I've seen, and the FMV of Trema owning its ass gives Paragon credibility, imo. ^_^

So Ultima Weapon it is, perhaps at least in part by the fact that so many haven't faced Paragon.

Our final battle of the first round:

Ozma - Final Fantasy IX (This big spinning globe thing is found in the Chocobo Air Garden. 65535 HP, 9999 MP and many dangerous moves. It uses Level 5 Death, so it's not a good idea to have anyone with a level that's a multiple of five. It has Kuja's Star Flare and the powerful Doomsday spell. It can also Curse your characters with status effects and uses Flare, Holy and Meteor. It has tremendous speed. You can steal a Pumice Piece, Robe of Lords and Dark Matter. And you can win a Pumice and Dark Matter. Also, for winning, Mene gives you the Ozma card and Strategy Guide key items. In order to attack Ozma physically, you'll need to have completed the Friendly Monsters sidequest.)

vs.

Nemesis - Final Fantasy X (Monster Arena) (The big one. Nemesis [a.k.a. "Omega Gold"] is only unlockable after you've captured ten of every monster and beaten all of the creations at least once. Just for unlocking it, you receive 10 Master Spheres. It has 10,000,000 HP. Obviously, most of its other statistics are way high. It has a powerful physical attack, for sure. Hades - 6

So after it was starting to look like Ultima Weapon might have that one sewn up, Hades wins this one by a hair.

And next we have:

Ruby Weapon - Final Fantasy VII ("A rose that blooms once every thousand years in the desert." - Item description for the Desert Rose you win for beating this sucker.)

vs.

Penance - Final Fantasy X (International) (Sorry, I don't know of any sort of quote thing to attach to this one.)
