Well, first, when you think about making a cover, it seems like there's no shortage of ideas, but when you actually doing it, you think... is this the right logo...... looks better on the top or in the bottom of the image, do I write complete motion picture score or music from the motion picture or the same has the last album (MUSIC FROM THE MOTION PICTURE . 20TH ANNYVERSARY EDITION)....So for one cover there's a thousand of possibilites...., Hope you like i, I did the best I could XD

"Complete Motion Picture Score"

"Music Composed & Conducted By Don Davis"

Anyone? Please?

I'd like "The Matrix" moved to the center, probably right below Neo's chest. I think t would look good in white. Then "Complete" up top and "Don Davis" at the bottom.

It really does need a higher quality copy of the image, which I'm not sure is around. And I do think that the addition of the LLL info in the bottom right does stick out like a sore thumb, so I might wanna remove that. Otherwise, I don't think it's bad at all!

Exactly, so it's gonna confuse people. This forum is littered with beings that aren't the brightest bulb in the box. They're gonna think there's a 2-disc expanded set.

Checked Amazon and there's no listing so I can't check if it's a single or 2-disc release. But all things point to single-disc so far.

Well, RDAF... I don't know how to put it... but would it be too much to ask to perhaps produce less but improved output?

You choose backgrounds that are not really fit for being covered by text (especially small text like tracklists), you don't leave any space at the top, the bottom or the sides. This makes your covers look squeezed and cluttered. Your tracklists on the other hand attempt to use all available space - and most of the time, less is more I think. Your covers look - most of the time - as if unfinished and done in great haste.

I'm sorry to be this blunt. But I can't help it, it hurts my eyes to look at them and I always want to fix them.

02-20-2018, 08:47 PM
Unfortunately, I have to say that I agree with sonic.
There's much room for improvements, a lot of things I'd make quite different.
I actually posted my suggestions a few pages back, but you either missed them or deliberately tried to ignore my post, I don't know. Either way, it's not my job to judge anything around here. I only offered my help. Take it or leave it.

Considering that RDAF has been at it for quite a long time (the earliest my files tell me is 2007), it seems to me that he simply likes the rather odd choices for the covers he makes. I have no idea if it's due to lack of much criticism in those days or simply ignoring what anyone says, but it looks like he isn't going to change his mode anytime soon. Of course, it'd be great if he actually did take the time to improve, but that likely would've happened already within the time passed.

SonicAdventure
02-20-2018, 10:36 PM
I remember seeing his covers for the first time 15 years ago. He never changed his modus operandi. He might have changed the program to do covers with but the result did stay the same. And something like that makes me wonder. Certainly, we are not the first persons to suggest improvements (or in my case, blunt criticism). Yet he continuously does not change. If I compared that to you, dear HunterTech, you have improved so much within a short amount of time, it's breathtaking.

Happy to see that incredibly low standards and "unreasonable" criticism can finally have you make a post. :D

I didn't even outright condemn them. If anything, I give big props to him for sticking to a formula for all the time he's made covers, considering that most others would often change their styles and methods overtime. It's just that because those standards have been made much higher since then that something that looks like it was pulled out of early 2000s bootlegs just doesn't quite cut it for many anymore.

I'm a bit worried that we scared RDAF from posting more covers, and if so, that wasn't the intention. We were merely just stating our thoughts, when many others were too nervous to comment their distain (yes, more than me & SA share the same opinion). So please: keep posting. Just know the sort of standards we have now. :)

You can't be around for long if you call that flaming.
There have been entirely different tones on this board. Hell, you've seen nothing if you consider this bad rap.
Sonic and Huntertech (and myself) offered a little bit of criticism. It wasn't disrespectful and it was brief. And it gives you no reason at all to start a war here and throw around with false insults.
If RDAF is around for ages, well then he certainly has seen and been through a lot of discussions like this one and I highly doubt that he will let himself be frightened off by a few pussys like us.

It,s like saying i have more sessions then you.
Trust me,i have more then the both of you.

Dude, I'll only agree that it's unreasonable if we outright called the covers godawful or dismissed RDAF as a person, which we haven't done at all. SA was merely giving tips to better improve things, while I'm just rationalizing why RDAF might dismiss criticism to keep something the way he likes it. No malice there. And while you can subjectively prefer one style to the other, to say one is outright better than the other in every way is very arrogant.

I'm not trying to start a quarrel either. I'm just trying to help people make their covers better, or make my own when I have ideas. I respect every single person here, and I wish them all the best of luck. If you ever start making covers yourself, then you're most certainly welcome to. It's everyone's home to post what they're proud of, and also what one can maybe fix. Nothing more. Nothing less. :D

And as a last thing, I'm gonna have my own bit of arrogance: which of these two do you prefer?

For someone who doesn't care about opinions, this person certainly has a vested interest.

Field of Dreams back cover is very nice and a great companion to the front cover.

Second Spider-Man cover is much better than the grainy first.

Great Annihilation covers heidl!

@HunterTech, the second one is better because of not only the quality, but the text placement and everything. The only thing is that the gray in "Original Motion Picture Score" is visible, until the end where "Score" is kinda hard to see, but that's just me.

Other than that, great job!

Sonic and Huntertech (and myself) offered a little bit of criticism.

Exactly this. I don't think anything said was with mal intent. The problem is that it's the internet and everyone sees is just blocks of text and takes that to heart, rather than seeing actual physical talking (then again, I've seen stubbornness outside the internet as well, but that's another story).

We need constructive criticism because how's everyone going to grow as an artist, performer, etc. without someone giving you words of encouragement to try to come up with something better, because everyone has the potential to grow in graphic designing and the like.

-----

Now I hope this will pass, because I want to see more covers for "Annihilation", "Black Panther" (both album and score), and other upcoming 2018 movies or the usual "Harry Potter", "Lord of the Rings", Star Wars series and James Bond series (especially for those great expanded/complete custom scores, as there's not enough custom covers for Bond, except for the two Newman scores heidl did, the SPECTRE ones that nolomax did, "A View to a Kill" that Tintancle made for me, the almost complete set that gururu did for the expanded scores and the ones James (The Disney Guy) did).

It's all about quality and variety. :)

Since constructive comments are allowed, You might try to find a better quality for the picture you're using.
The first one is definitely not working for me.

On the second, I'm not sure the composition works very well.
- Too much empty space over Peter's head (You could justify the "Complete motion picture score" text on the left with each word on the different line and not so close to the edge to fill this space).
- Too much of the pole in the frame (I would move Spidey and the pole to the right til half to 2 third of the pole is out).
- The title is hard to read (maybe moving Spidey up a bit and adding a subtle progressive darkening behind the title would help)

I found this huge wallpaper maybe you could use this instead?

I was actually just working on an update for this picture, so this is rather handy! :D

That second cover was made literally at the start of my cover making days (4/14/17). It was way before SA had his own guide for making covers, as well as me learning a lot of techniques for PhotoShop. I merely posted it now as comparison between an earlier effort of mine (the 2nd) and an earlier effort of RDAF (the 1st).

I personally don't mind the space near Peter's head, but I can why it's an issue. Same with the pole, since I think Spidey has enough presence in the picture, regardless of the pole. The title I've considered doing something with, but I can't be sure what.

I appreciate the photo you're offering, but it's too dark and grainy for my liking.

Perhaps this can work?

In either case, I have ideas as to how I could approach this.

Hello all of you. Back from holidays yesterday i saw and read everything and...laugh a lot (and not).
I have NOTHING against criticism, as long at it is not condescendant and said in a "bully" way.
I am completly agree with the fact that my covers doesn't looks like some of yours and there is a way as i explained a loooooong time ago in my web site.
If my covers seems to be coming from the 2000 bootleg area (as you said earlier) it is made on purpose.
I DON'T want and NEVER will work on cover and made them as a regular cds. Never liked them (come on guys, some Varese are really ugly...).

A long time ago a guy made me dream with his web site and his covers of scores i dreamed of.
So i make my own.
I change over the time but never consider myself an artist (far from it).
I did that for me in a time i was burning my cds and print my covers but ESPECIALLY I did that for people who didn't have those covers.
Seems like i made a million of them and I rarely had a thank you and never ask for one...

BUT, criticism has always been here and there.

I will continue to try, maybe to change but be sure of something, I will continue, not for the negative guys (hey, why bother, you can do your own),
but for the people (maybe only 2 or 3 :D ) who like what I do.

To finish, you are ALL trying and working very hard. Some of your work are sometimes amazing (yes, heidl, I like your work) and if I never, ever say
anything about you, it is because I KNOW i'm not that good.
But I try.
Thanks to all of you, more is to come.

PS: I saw a lot of front covers but rarely a back...that is where the work is important to me (i always been fascinated by the back covers of some scores).
Hope to see more of that from you guys.

Well then, that confirms what I've been thinking this whole time.

If I did come across as negative to you, then I would like to apologise, considering that people do have their different standards and tastes. The 2000s look is something that clearly still has appeal to some, as evidenced by the past few days. And that is perfectly fine!

There's so many people out there making covers that it's easy to know styles that certain users bring to the table, and you're no different. I appreciate someone who has a particular look in mind, and decides to stick with it all the way through. It may not be the best thing in the world, but it has its charm and place among the rest of ones being posted.

I'll admit that I certainly only make whatever looks solid to me in the moment. There isn't much in terms of style present, save for a few font choices and consistency in popular series covers. Really, I'm here to see where this cover making process takes me, and so far, I'm in a pretty decent spot. Could use more work, but I'm certainly aiming higher and higher.

So please, keep doing what you're doing. Because you have your fans, and as you've said, if we're not happy with how they're turning out, then perhaps we can make our own variations. Because really, everyone has the floor available to make what they want to make. And that's the beauty of it all.

Well thanks for your viewpoint RDAF, cause we really don't need a war here. I think the criticism was constructive, and it wasn't about bullying. But well, maybe i would have had the same reaction if i was at your place...

And you said something important, people should do more back covers. And yes Varese and other labels did (and still do) horrible ones. Most of the time it s really hard working on them, harder than on fronts only. My opinion once again :)

I rarely print out or burn things anymore as I left that all behind in the 2000s, so I'm not worried about back covers. I just put everything in my portable HD (I have a countless collection of WD Terabyte hard drives) and I just put up the album art on my iTunes and my iPhone 8, some I get here and "officially" scanned/cleaned up ones on Album Art Exchange. (I personally don't have the level of dislike for the new iOS, though I do miss the album art color tracklisting thing. I've tried Cesium and Marvis and Cesium can be slow at times, though Marvis is great, but I'm sticking with the music app on iOS).

For soundtrack covers, I personally would not reccomend film stills as its much better to use promo art/posters for said film. However Most do use them for inlays of back covers in which case, moviestillsdatabase has a plethora of stuff, but you ave to join so you can get the images without the watermarks. I hope that helps, I usually would rely on a google search while increasing image size to 2mp or 4mp so it searches for high quality images even 1080p works as well. :)

I would love @ antovolk to make a comeback and redo this nice Batman v Superman cover and have it say "Complete Motion Picture Score" rather than "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack", as it's one amazing cover. :D

That's the cover I used before Hunter made me one a few months ago. He posted them above. I like it a lot better. It's also more aesthetically pleasing in iOS 9 :p

But I'd like to see some edits, if you don't mind.

First please get rid of that dreadful Trajan and change it so something more eye-pleasing like Albertus MD.
And then try to change the Star Wars logo from black to white, I think that would work wonders.
You could also move the whole image (minus the text) up a bit to balance it out vertically

Updated two covers with Albertus MD and made a third one with Rey. That one feels a bit off, can't really say what. Feedback on the Rey image?

Thanks

I've got these three;

The first one I did some time ago because I wanted to have a hi-res version of the La-La Land 3CD Edition cover. So it's heavily inspired by that ;)

The second one all credit goes to Daren R. Dochterman () which he did for the Limited Edition Vinyl release also by La-La Land. All I did was remove the trademark logo (which I hate when they put that on there) and changed the font.

The third is done by brilliant artist Jim Titus (https://www.behance.net/jimtitus), seriously check out his stuff. But again, I changed the font, and fixed a small weird error in the first E of 'The Motion Picture':

In all honesty, if I were choosing a sci-fi of the 70s, I'll avoid The Motionless Picture altogether (despite me loving the Goldsmith score) and go with Moonraker (yes, it's still a spy thriller, but it does have science fiction elements once Bond goes into space, plus I love the music for that film), Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, The Black Hole, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and of course, Star Wars.

Motionless Picture lol! I think we should start a thread with alternate titles for that dull movie. BUT the score is superb of course. When it comes to great sci-fi Alien, Aliens, Terminator, T2 Blade Runner gotta be up there, and honorable mention to ST The Wrath of Khan.

Yes, definitely agree with all of this. I've forgotten all about "Alien" (1979) and "Aliens" (1986), because they're just great. (Alien 3 is a mixed bag but Resurrection is a guilty pleasure, so I'll let that slide, hahaha)

No because everything's already out there? ;)

It was a random idea that I had yesterday, after realizing that nobody ever does anything with the spider in front of the costume from the first movie. Found this image (), got a better copy, and worked from there.

Its designed to fit the most common bootleg for each film (though I probably shouldve made an expanded variant for 3, as no current edition will ever be complete).

As for what Im actually planning, that has its own thing. Youll see. ;)

That's a very recent leak that I found on Soulseek last year, though there was a promo floating around for years as well. As well as two copies of all the Debney cues. I'll get into more detail soon enough.

My nostalgia still makes me like the one from 2 more, but I certainly have a soft spot for the original one.

It's crazy to think the amount of stuff that's leaked and was able to be ripped from the film itself, but still have missing stuff at the same time. It's quite the mess, so that's why I'm doing what I'm doing.

@tintacle can you possibly redo your Star Trek covers including this border (https://img.discogs.com/RT1kJCZoyl8TMtbKk8hpfoe2fcU=/fit-in/600x600/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():qualit y(90)/discogs-images/R-3581565-1336305753.jpeg.jpg)? All the other ST albums I own have them, so this would make for a nice addition ;)
Actually, as a better match of the FSM covers for both Wrath of Khan (https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/cds/viewlarge.cfm?c1=431_968260) and Search for Spock (https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/cds/viewlarge.cfm?c1=454_984399), I'd suggest this instead:

That's a very recent leak that I found on Soulseek last year, though there was a promo floating around for years as well. As well as two copies of all the Debney cues. I'll get into more detail soon enough.

My nostalgia still makes me like the one from 2 more, but I certainly have a soft spot for the original one.

It's crazy to think the amount of stuff that's leaked and was able to be ripped from the film itself, but still have missing stuff at the same time. It's quite the mess, so that's why I'm doing what I'm doing.

The entire suit from the first film was my favourite. Even the back emblem was different. However I liked the red and black palette they used for the suit in spider-man 2 to represent his original outfit from the ditko days.

Yeah I can understand that, I've been wanting to do an ultimate compilation or even a (as close as possible complete score) for spider man 3 but am missing a few sources ( all debney cues etc) unfortunately. Hopefully someone beats me to the punch or if I can get some of the new leaks I can do to it what I did for TASM2. One day lol. As always brother I'll be on the lookout, I love discussing spider-man soundtracks . Also on a side note if you want I have the true film version of "the fire" cue from the first movie. Its not in 320kbps but it is the true film version (not a rip) If interested I can share it with ya.

Been a while since I made some covers, but thought I'd try and get back into the habit

Probably the best Ultron cover Ive seen on this site; excellent job!

Love the first one. Any chance you can fix the typo on Goldsmith please?

Truth. He's one of my favorites along with John Barry, Alex North, James Horner, Howard Shore, Miklos Rozsa, Basil Poledouris, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Max Steiner Franz Waxman, and John Williams.

Then there's Vangelis, Steve Jablonsky, James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer on my list too.

Thanks for pointing that out, I never noticed despite having used it myself for about 4 months

Excellent, Thank you!

You can request anything you want from me ;)

Ohh that's a relief :D

It's another Bond request that I've requested a few months back when the official La La Land "Die Another Day" got released in which I would love these covers to have the black and white border to match those of the official La-La-Land release of Die Another Day and the 2003 expanded scores:

Does someone have a link to a full quality version of this?

It belongs to a series of similar looking covers for POTC 1, 2, 3 and 4 at least. I do have the ones for 2-4, but not for 1.
Oh and I wouldn't mind it for POTC 5 if there is a similar version.

One of the underrated Disney classics, which featured on e of my favourite Mickey Mouse films "Mickey and the beanstalk"
