Wikipedia says that William Ross conducted most of the score, but Williams still conducted some of the recording sessions.

You think so? I think it's a really bold move, even ballsy! The level of understatement on a project of this scale is remarkable, especially considering this is coming from Disney. It reminds me of TRON Legacy and I also loved that one. Now if only the movie received the same amount of love/care.

It's different in that I prefer these black stars background versions over the regular poster covers that they release, but it's kind of old school, if that makes sense? Those covers would look fantastic on a Vinyl release. I'm not so sure if it would look as great on a regular CD release. I want to hold it in my hands first. Then I'll stand corrected :-)

Also had these lying around. Nothing fancy and I think these might already exist in a similar variation, but I noticed I'd done the work on these but never actually exported/uploaded them. So here you go.

(http://imgur.com/uTFI0ax) (http://imgur.com/YFarJDs)

P.S.: I loved the film. Absolutely loved it. Old school Die Hard balls to the walls action :) Way better than White House Down in my opinion. Can't wait for London Has Fallen, although it's kind of stupid to base it in London but have the POTUS be the target again. Why not take down the Prime Minister instead? OR THE QUEEN HERSELF?! :D :D MI6 is decimated and then Mike Banning's all "ah fine, I'll do it myself" LOL :D

Hey guys! I'm here with covers for the soundtrack to the Rooster Teeth show RWBY! Here is the official cover:

And I loved it but it bugged me that the four panels in the cover didn't feature the actual art from the show, instead it was another artist's rendition of the characters. So I set out to make an identical cover, but instead using episode screenshots of each character, if that makes any sense. Then I made identical covers for volumes 2-4. Volume 4 isn't out yet, I made it for when/if we get it.

You'll notice that originally the volume 1 cover is black, but I made it red instead, and then made the other covers their respective colors to follow the acronym: R=Red/Ruby, W=White/Weiss, B=Black/Blake, Y=Yellow/Yang. As always, click for full size!

As promised, here are covers for the score from RWBY! Volume 1's cover is the official one, I made all the others in the style of volume 1. Volume 4 is not out yet, I made it for if/when we get it. Also, in volume 3, Blake's logo is supposed to be black, but it obviously didn't show against the black background and I didn't want to invert the cover itself, so I inverted just it instead. Hope you guys like them, and as always, click for full size!

I'm probably going to stop publishing the covers I make on here. I think they're good, but after receiving little to no feedback for a while it's getting a little depressing. Last time anybody (with the exception of Dave999, even then I had to bump) gave me feedback was on my Exodus covers.

That's the thing - I find a good font. Colours don't match.
Add a little colour changes to the background to make it more vivid and make the text stand out more. It's either overdone or not done enough.
Change colour of the text, doesn't look good.
Add a shadow, looks amateurish.

It's the lack of 'Likes' that's most likely causing this. Not getting a single response to something you've put time and effort into can be numbing! On the other hand, having countless of "looking good"'s in this thread isn't helpful either, it only clutters it (and it's already hundreds of pages long). Bumping ones' own posts also does this, and it only makes the one who does this appear desperate. But you can't force people to give feedback all the time. This isn't DeviantArt, after all. Please don't misunderstand me, no-one wants you to stop posting custom covers! But try to see it from the other perspective: Giving a 'Like' was effortless, while giving feedback is time-consuming, even a simple "looks good"; and people are lazy – all of us are.

Probably you're overthinking this. It's understandable... working on a custom cover by request must be increbibly harder and more difficult than a self custom cover. But don't worry. Be happy! Anything you will provide, will be happily accepted. Believe me, I'd really love to do this works by myself, but I don't have means for it. GIMP. It's free, and available for Windows, Mac, and Linux! It's completely comparable to Photoshop, and if you want to do any particular effect on an image, chances are, there's a script-fu for that (script-fus are 'plugins' you 'install' onto your particular build of GIMP. Super helpful for doing all sorts of things! Millions of these exist if you know where to look and what to search for. I can give you a list of the ones I use almost regularly if you'd like).

http://www.gimp.org

And if you're gonna download GIMP for Mac don't download the official version, download this 'enhanced' version that has loads more features (trust me, it's virus free, I use it daily!).

My thoughts exactly!

The like-system is still desperately missed, especially in this thread. But that's the way it is and we have to deal with it.

Azetlor, please keep making covers. For all it's worth don't just stop due to the lack of feedback. You know why? Cause most importantly you should make the covers for yourself! You should enjoy making them, everything else is secondary.

Let me give you some tips (and I'm not refering to any of your work in particular here):

- Good research is half the battle. Take your time to find good looking and fitting fonts. Font design is probably the most important thing of all. Try making font only covers for practice. It's fun and you can you can be creative infinitely.
- Use only striking images. Not every image deserves to be the front cover of a soundtrack album
- Don't ever use film stills. They look blurry and cheap (unless they had a really good DoP). Stick to promotian material and fan art as much as possible
- Don't use drop shadows on light backgrounds. Try to find other solutions to make text visible and readable.
- Try to make every custom cover something special. Don't just slap OMPS and Music By somewhere on there. Try to come up with something new, be creative amd inventive. There are no rules, no limitations! Isn't that great?
- At the same time feel free to "borrow" good ideas from other designers. It's flattering after all :) just give credit if you can (the same goes for fan art).
- Love what you do. If you love your own work, chances are that others will as well.
- And finally don't take everything I've said here too literally. It's just one one of many opinions.

I wouldn't use Serpentine Medium for the smallprint, to be honest. To me, this font doesn't scale down all that well – it looks much better large. Plus, it competes too heavily with the official title font, as both are somewhat fancy. No, i think a more neutral font would work better. Don't use Helvetica though – ever. As good as it is, it's also become ubiquitous, it's everywhere. And as such, it has no character anymore, and neither will your cover have character if you use it. Use Franklin Gothic instead. Or Akzidenz Grotesk. Or just google "Helvetica alternatives". Bank Gothic could work as well, btw, but i'd prefer Eurasia Extended in this case, probably in italics.

Oh, of course it's not a bad font; not at all. Otherwise it wouldn't have gotten so ubiquitous. Heck, i have even used it myself, quite prominently in my Mirror's Edge series. Still, when used without thought, there are almost always fitting alternatives one can use.

It's pretty ugly. The Spider-man 3/PlayStation 3 font is a refined version that I'd gladly use, but the original (homoarakhan) is ugly.

This refined version isn't available to download anywhere, sadly. I'm cutting out the SM3 logo and tweaking it for SM1/SM2 logos, then using something else entirely for the text at the bottom.

Someone on this page earlier said the fonts are extremely important. And Serpentine Medium was used on both of SM2's VA/score albums :)

The font is just placeholder, but it isn't too bad looking. It's clean.

You're right, it looks pretty good. But there's one thing that's bugging me: The logo is slanted differently than the text at the bottom. It kinda works if they are far enough from each other, just as in your cover above. But the perfectionist in me wouldn't permit it I guess.

That's a temp logo (thought I unchecked that layer), it'll soon be replaced by the SM3 logo. Still has the same slant but it's more streamlined and stylized, which might help differentiate it.

I'll certainly try slanting the bottom text, even though without Photoshop in front of me the thought of it slanting that much seems really strange.

Yeah, it doesn't look too bad slanted the same as the logo. Will probably keep it that way.

And I apologize for posting so many unfinished covers. I'll remove them all later if it's clogging this thread up for everyone.

I've been working on my set for Game of Thrones by Ramin Djawadi for several months now, on and off, but i believe i have finally completed it. I've posted about it before, so, sorry if i bother any of you with yet another mention of it. Anyway, here we go:

These are all 300px, but you can find versions of up to 1000px on my blog here: http://hoffer.cx/albumart/#GoT

A quick one for Mr. Nobody by Pierre van Dormael

I love it! One of my favourite scores :)

Hey man, check out "Gone Home" and "Life is Strange". Both games have in-game music that remind me a lot of Mr. Nobody. (Life is Strange sadly has no officially released soundtrack (yet), so you're stuck with a rip for now.)

New CREED album is out (no, not the bland rock band...) so here's a quickie I whipped up (prefer the second one - prefer this poster over the official as well).

The Bourne Quadrilogy Custom Covers
( John Powell & James Newton Howard )

Here are my custom covers for The Bourne Quadrilogy.

I was very inspired by one of SonicAdventure's covers for his Deluxe Edition of The Bourne Supremacy, so I thought I would make similar ones for the other movies.

Now, I know that Sonic hasn't made Deluxe Editions for The Bourne Identity or The Bourne Legacy, hopefully one day he will ;),
but because the movies are so closely connected (at least the first three), I think the covers should be a matching set.

Like this (in iTunes):

Simple answer: Google search.

Complex answer: start with Google image search, use clever searchterms, use better search terms, use complex search terms, use simpler search terms, use "search similar images", use "image size: large", search for press kits, etc. If nothing usable comes up, take the biggest/best film poster/cover/promo material and use Photoshop to extract the logo/title. If all fails, recreate it by hand – or use a combination of the above.

Or you go to fanart.tv and search for the movie/tv show in question. They usually have a hq version of the logo there, and sometimes they have the logo in multiple languages! I have an account at moviepostersdb.com and I'm pretty much covered by that site. They have posters, logos and key art in the highest possible resolution and it's not really expensive. Also, it's possible to cross-search with google images, so sometimes it's also possible to find the one textless poster you need on Google - for free.

Other useful image sources I constantly use: deviantArt, Pinterest, IMP, Behance, ConceptArtWorld

WARNING: LONG POST INCOMING

Hello everyone! I've long been frequenting this forum for a long time and I have to say that this thread is my absolute favourite on the site. It provides a great tool to people such as me, who love to meticulously organise their iTunes with the best-looking covers, but more than that it has been awesome seeing the progression of new contributors as they first test the waters with their photo-editing skills, going from simple covers to works of art. Unfortunately, this has the side effect of making one incredibly jealous. "How come these guys are so great at making album covers, but I'm not?". Well, summer holidays are here and instead of spending all of my free time lazing around playing games and watching movies I'm only going to spend most of my free time lazing around playing games and watching movies, and spend some time learning how to do this "custom cover" thing.

Forgive me for the long post to follow, but seeing as how this is the first cover I'm posting to the shrine I feel like recounting the tale of its creation will prove cathartic for me given how challenging it was. I had a couple of trial runs with GIMP (I heard it was free so I jumped right on that), but for my first real project I decided to tackle a score I haven't seen anyone make a custom cover for yet. One which I feel deserves a better cover than what it got. Pirate's Passage by Andrew Lockington.

The problems I have with this cover come down to what I personally believe an album cover should be. It should be visually appealing and stand-alone, while at the same time giving only a general idea of what the story is about. Generally, covers that convey the mood, tone, setting and location of a story I feel are more important than the characters in that story, although there are exceptions to this rule. For that reason, I feel the laziest album covers are those that just use the main movie poster with all the famous actors standing in a row looking off into the distance (again, there are exceptions where this turns out fine).

As such, you can probably see where my problems with this particular cover stem from. Granted, it's got a backdrop of a ship caught in a stormy sea with an ominous Death Eater-esque cloud in the distance. That's pretty good! Unfortunately, this cover commits the cardinal sing of overlaying that nice background with a bunch of characters I don't care about. I haven't seen this film, therefore I don't know anything about these characters. They don't strike a cord with me, and they're not doing anything particularly noteworthy in terms of pose and posture. It just gives off a general impression of a cheap animated child's film (which I haven't seen the film, so maybe it is). But the front cover of an album should be about the music, and the music shouldn't be held down by the film it accompanies! Especially for a film I haven't seen, the music should stand apart from the film, telling its on story. A good album cover helps achieve just that. So, that's what I set out to do! Follow me on my adventure as I chart the treacherous waters of custom cover making!

This was probably a poor project to start as my first since the somewhat obscure nature of the movie made finding promotional material quite difficult. My biggest problem was that I never found the movie logo separate from the source material (hence me asking for some help above!). Unfortunately, while I will definitely use the advice you've all been kind enough to give me for future covers, it didn't help me for finding a logo for this one. So I hard to resort to rotane's second-worst-case scenario: find the highest-quality promo and cut the logo out from that. Funnily enough, the highest quality material turned out to be the OST cover (which proves how little promo material there is).

Next came the hard part: cutting out the logo. 15 minutes of researching which GIMP tool is best for cutting it out. 10 minutes experimenting and finally deciding what tool to use (finally decided on fuzzy select tool). 20 minutes using the tool to try and cut the logo out perfectly. 10 minutes to realise "haha no, it's never that easy" and compromising by cutting out all the logo + some background. 1 hour erasing the background as close to the logo as possible. Going to dinner. Coming back and pasting the logo onto the background I want to use. 30 minutes of 5 minute intervals going back to erase more stuff from the background I missed because it wasn't visible until I pasted the logo onto the background. 5 minutes of actually typing the text for the cover, deciding on the font and the colour.

Phew.

Actually, the part that I thought would be the hardest - finding a nice background image suitable for a cover - turned out pretty simple. I found some beautiful hand-drawn paintings for the front cover of the book the film is based on and decided to use this one because a) it is minimalistic while still containing the important elements of the story (the skull, the ship, the captain) b) it tells you very little about what the story is about and, c) it remind me of the front cover of a fantasy book I would find lying around in a bargain bin at a local library which, considering the story is set in Nova Scotia 1952, I thought was quite appropriate.

As for the font, I pretty much just copied the text and layout from the OST cover but changed the font to give it more of that "bargain-bin fantasy book" feel that the background was trying to capture. Funnily enough, by going for this old-book feeling, the film logo which I spent so long trying to cut out actually looks a little too modern and out-of-place, but I spent roughly two and a half hours on the dang thing, so stay it does.

And so, with much ado, here's the final product! I've gotta say, I quite like how it's turned out. It takes a lot of willpower to not reopen the program and fiddle with the text, the colour, the font, the placement, etc. Even those black bars at the top and bottom of the image I considered going back to erase, but I like that rough feeling that it gives to the whole thing, like the cover itself wasn't made in GIMP but hand-made. I'm well aware there's probably several areas which I need significant improvements in, so don't be afraid to give feedback. I want to learn! And yes, I probably won't become the next heidl, but if I can give back a little bit of the joy the wonderful contributors of this thread have given me, well that's alright by me.

Hope you enjoy!

EDIT: Many thanks to SoundtrackJunkie for all of the wonderful advice, heidl and jason for the rep and everyone else for their lovely comments! I've decided to follow the Junkie's advice and moved the text to follow the original covers more closely.

FULL COVER:

Wow, Glass Butterflies! Your first cover is amazing!!!!! Here are some tips I have. First off I'd make 'Andrew Lockington' aligned with the left edge of the rest of the text above it. You already have the other text left aligned, and to have that one to the right just looks a little out of place. But that's just my opinion. A good way to do this so you don't do it by eye is to duplicate your text layers, take the duplicated layers, and autocrop them (Layer > Autocrop Layer), then use the alignment tool to align them. After that, take the text layer you originally had, and line it up with the aligned layer, and delete the aligned one (so you just have the editable text layer left). Then with the text I'd also suggest making the spacing in between lines a lot smaller. The way the lines are spaced on the official cover is good, they're close to each other but not too close. Your text is just a tad too spacey, if that makes sense. Again, just my opinion.

Now lastly, here are some ways to grab the logo so that you don't have to do it again by hand. One method you can use is to edit the background of the thing the logo is on as much as possible to make it one solid color that contrasts the logo (using the Bucket tool and messing with the Threshold). Then, after that's done go back to the bucket tool and under 'mode' choose 'Color erase', click on the area with the solid color, and it should erase it. It might take a few tries of undoing and redoing and messing with the threshold (located at the bottom of the tool's options) to make sure that it didn't take part of the logo with the color erasing. And sometimes if it did, you might be able to fix it by using a duplicate of the original layer and selectively erasing to fill in the holes, then merging the layers together.

If that doesn't work, then keep the layer with the logo and solid background, and load up 'G'MIC' (located in the Filters menu, see the next tip if you don't have it/need to install it), then go to the 'Color' drop down and go to 'Replace Color', then stick in the code of the color you want to erase and mess around with the tolerance. Then when you're happy with the result, click apply. That does the same thing as 'color erase' from the Bucket tool but sometimes it does a better job. Try both methods and see what works better.

Or there's the option of using G'MIC and using the 'select color' tool in there. 'Select Color' is under the 'color' drop down in G'MIC. This works particularly well if your logo is one solid color. You go to your image, use the dropper tool to 'grab' the color, and then in G'MIC put in the code for the color you're trying to grab, then mess with the 'Tolerance' to have it grab more or less of the image. Once you're happy, click 'apply' and close G'MIC and go back and edit it to make it the way you want it to be! Sometimes the 'Select Color' tool in G'MIC works really well and you don't have to edit much, sometimes you have to do some small erasing around the edges! Either way, it gives you less work to do then grabbing the logo by hand using the crop tool and meticulously erasing around the edges. To find G'MIC, go to the 'Filters' menu...it should be all the way at the end of the menu. If it's not then that either means you aren't running the latest version of GIMP or you have to install it. It's available on the internet and installing it is as easy as moving the file you download to a particular folder, nothing fancy you have to do.

Finally, here's what you can do to grab the logo by hand. I'm assuming (correct me if I'm wrong) that you grabbed the logo by cropping it down to the logo and then erasing what background was left. That can work sometimes (that's what I used to do in my early days) but if you really want to grab it by hand a better way to do it is to use the 'Lasso' tool. On GIMP it's called the 'Free-Select Tool', and the icon looks like a lasso. it's the equivalent of the lasso on Photoshop. You click it and then just start to 'trace' around the logo, then complete the tracing by fully connecting the points. Then it 'selects' what you just traced. From then on you go to 'Edit' and 'Copy Visible'. Don't just copy, it doesn't always work. Then you can go to Edit > 'Paste as Layer' or edit > 'Paste as Image'. DON'T just paste it, if you do it'll paste it as a 'floating transformation' and you can't do other things to the rest of the layers while it's there. You have to either paste it as a new layer or a new image.

This post was kind of long, but I hope it made sense! Message me if you have any questions at all, and if anybody else has any tips, feel free to give them!

fanart.tv is a great resource that I use a lot. Although the logos often have shadows which is annoying because i don't always want a shadow. Still, it's a great website. :)

Indeed, a lot of the logos have shadows but usually using 'G'MIC''s 'replace color' gets rid of it pretty well with me having to do minimal 'by-hand' erasing afterwards.

Indiana Jones Quadrilogy Custom Covers
( John Williams )

Here are my custom covers for the Indiana Jones Quadrilogy.

The big image is to show the cover, the small images are linked, click on them to get the full resolution.

The order for the small images are; Original Soundtrack - Original Score - Complete Score - Complete Soundtrack.

As a small appetizer for Star Wars, I thought I would rework my Indiana Jones covers and add a few other versions.
For Raiders there are three with the Raiders logo and three with the Indiana Jones logo.
Some people prefer the Raiders logo since that is the original title of the film, however I prefer to have the Indiana Jones logo on it because that's the way I prefer to have them in iTunes.
Even though I always refer to the movie with the Raiders title ;)

Like this (in iTunes):

Or this:

Or this:

There is also a Deluxe Edition version for the three Kingdom of the Crystal Skull covers, that's for those who (like me) has SonicAdventure's Deluxe Edition album.

Hello cover making friends!! After a long hiatus, I have come back with some covers. I am still busy finishing up my masters, but I find some time here and there to keep making covers. I have spent the last few months trying to learn photoshop, which I just recently acquired. All I can say is, WOW!! Quite a difference from the Preview app on my iMac!! It's still a learning process, so I currently use a sort of hybrid of both programs for my covers. I have kept up with the thread, and can only say that the covers have been INCREDIBLE! Can believe how much big this thread has gotten!! So many new and talented cover makers. I tip my hat to all of you, and continue the great work! Here are just a few samples of the newer covers. Enjoy and cheers!!

LONG POST FEATURING A WONDERFUL MAKING-OF STORY AND A GREAT FIRST CUSTOM COVER

Dude, should I ever write a book about the creation of custom covers this post will get its own chapter :-D

I can't express enough of how much I enjoyed accompanying your on your voyage to your first real custom cover. And I must say the outcome was really worth all your hard efforts. In documenting your process you gave it so much more meaning. And I really hesitate giving you any advice for improvements (there aren't many I assure you!), because of all the love that already went into it.
Your post really made me ponder over all the energy and commitment so many artists are putting into their works, without hardly anyone noticing or acknowledging. Every single piece of art has a journey behind it and you brought yours to light. Thank you. More of that, please!

Indiana Jones Quadrilogy Custom Covers
( John Williams )

Those are really great, tintacle. I think I prefer background #1, it somehow works best with the logo/image in terms of contrast and colour temperature.
I can see how much you took care to make everything look perfect, and they indeed are. I also understand your desire to post them in the biggest size possible, but I think it's a bit much for one single post. For a posting as long as this one, I'd suggest posting only thumbnails linking to the full size covers. Or at least make the links to the variations (Score, Complete, Soundtrack, etc...) text-only, so the sheer mass of covers doesn't bury one. But it's just an advice... I know you've established your specific way of posting covers, and I appreciate that.

Also, I can't wait for your Star Wars covers, man! I know it's gonna be fucking great.

Absolutely gorgeous! I was wondering if your muse ever strikes you (meaning, if you find the time), do you plan on making a matching set for all the Fallout games?

My muse has been pretty busy, but she managed to stop by for a short blessing, so without any further nonsense, here's Fallout 3 :)

It always baffled me that you only used Preview to make your covers, as they were among some of the best in this thread! Glad to see you're starting to use Photoshop! That was the way with me and GIMP too when I first started out, I used both programs as a hybrid. But as you keep working on your covers you'll find yourself using Preview less and less and relying on Photoshop only--at least, that's how it was for me!

BTW congrats on those Hunger Games covers, especially the ones for Mockingjay part 2, ASTOUNDING!!! The only thing I'd say is watch the placement of the logo in your second Mockingjay part 2 cover, it looks just a tad off center. (Also I wish Finnick was in your MGP1 cover...but I understand why that wouldn't work design wise) Otherwise, FANTASTIC!

thanks Lord Squid! Good to be back, although it's probably only part-time right now!!

SoundtrackJunkie, thanks for the kind words. I got the most out of Preview in my covers, that's for sure!! But Photoshop is still so alien to me! The logo alignment for hunger games is a clear example! I'm still learning how to center things!! lol. The hybrid route is the best for me right now, and i'm sure I'll get more comfortable like you said. I messed up on a dark shadows complete cover, because I screwed up the text style effects. I was so frustrated!!! Oh well, eventually I'll get the hang of it. Thanks again!!!

dpi too small...? Probably to save space on this page because he has so many covers to show. Full size is 1000x1000, seems large enough for me...

Guys, the dpi-value says exactly as much about the quality of a file as tags of an mp3 file do: nothing. The ONLY important thing are the pixels. In this case, they are 1000x1000. Period.

You could have a 1000x1000 pixel image at 72dpi, or a 1000x1000 pixel image at 300dpi, or a 1000x1000 pixel image at 5000dpi – the quality of all 3 would be exactly the same. You can change the dpi value around as much as you want (without scaling the image up/down in the process of course), and it won't affect the actual image at all.

If you want to know more, i suggest you read this article: http://daraskolnick.com/image-dpi-web/

tintacle, love the IJ covers! I've been using your version 3 for a long time but, switched to version one. Hadn't seen that it before and think it looks the best. I also switched to just a "Raiders" cover since I'm one of those who is partial to the original title (although in iTunes, my "sort as" album title is Indiana Jones 1 so that it sits right next to the others even thought the album title is Raiders...).

Can't wait to see you Star Wars covers! Hope you are doing some without the "episode" number to match the current marketing, I've actually started liking that more now. Your staggered release is going to be torture, I want to see them all now!

This one does not only look really good, it's also fascinating to see the official GoT S5 cover in a completely new light. It's almost romantically beautiful. You really GOT it ;)

And again, a radically different aproach, I'm stoked. Also - and I only have it seen right now - the amount of detail in the archway is incredible!! Dude! :-O

Thanks for all the comments and advice on my first custom cover! Hopefully as time goes by my skills will improve to the level displayed by the masters that frequent this thread. Since then I've been fiddling around with some ideas for a couple of other covers. Don't worry, unlike my first cover I won't be writing an essay for every cover! I just like to write out my thoughts and processes when it comes to creating covers. By doing this I'm hoping to foster some debate between the contributors in this thread, as well as make myself more open to advice for improvement from people more talented than me. So if you think there's something I'm doing that could be improved, please make yourself known! This next cover I debated with myself whether or not to upload it, since it is a videogame score and they generally don't seem to be as popular as film and television scores on this site. Yet many times I find that covers for videogame OSTs are severely lacking, and often could use the help of a few people on this thread. So, I thought I'd spend some time on one such score: Splatoon by Toru Minegishi and Shiho Fujii. Here's the official cover.

Now, I actually like this OST cover. In my first post I talked a bit about what I feel a soundtrack cover should be, and I mentioned that a cover should, at least for me personally, aim to convey tone and setting more-so than plot and characters. I find that especially true for videogame scores, and this OST cover honestly ticks most of the boxes for me. Very simple in both design and colour scheme, the Dreamsworks-esque eyes allude to a playful, quirky and mischievous tone. Honestly, if I'd never played the game, this cover would be almost perfect.

But I have played the game.

Quite a lot, actually. Probably my favourite of the year. Like the best Nintendo titles of yesterday, it is imaginative, highly inventive and original, family-friendly and extremely addicting and fun, but above all of those things, it is colourful. This game not only prominently features all the colours of the rainbow and many shades inbetween, but makes it a core gameplay mechanic. So to see the score represented by only one colour on the cover I thought seemed like a strange choice. Time for a custom cover, methinks!

This cover took me almost as long as the previous one but not due to unfamiliarity with the tools and novice GIMP abilities, but indecisiveness, particularly with the background. The rest of the cover came together quite quickly; the inkling girl, the text placement, the font (sharp-eyed individuals might catch that it's a variation on the Ice Age font, retooled here as the official Splatoon font) and colour. But the background I went back-and-forth on for some time. Initially it was basic orange; to represent the clean slate at the beginning of every multiplayer match (the blue in the inkling girl's eye would be the first shot signalling the start of a match). As an aside, I find it quite refreshing that a game aimed at children of both genders is, for once, featuring the female protagonist more prominently than the male protagonist. Anyways, I then tried out every other major colour used in the game as a background. Then I tried some paint splatters, but many of them were too 'realistic' for such a cartoony game and others didn't quite match the colours used in-game. I finally found a cartoony paint splatter, but it was over a black background which I didn't think fitted. So I made the black transparent and put it over an orange background. That's when it hit me, like a paintball to the face. This is the cover I was looking for!

Phew, didn't mean for this post to be quite so long. I'll try not to make a habit of it, I promise! As always, feedback is always always ALWAYS appreciated! Also, if you feel so inclined, mention what rules you abide by when making custom covers. Are they hard and fast, or are there exceptions when making certain kinds of covers?

BONUS: Here's some of the "Mark I's". Do you like the standard backgrounds better, or prefer the splash of colour on the final cover? Feel free to use these ones instead if you want. If you want another colour I'd be happy to oblige!

I'm sorry if everyone's had enough of this already, but I'd like to request a cover for Harry Gregson-Williams' "The Martian" based on this image:

Now, I know there's been more than enough covers for this score already, but I think that picture over there might be a nice (if a bit simple) addition. "Original Motion Picture Score by Harry Gregson-Williams" or something like that would be nice, nothing fancy here. So, thanks in advance and keep up all your amazing work here, guys!

An awful lot of 60s/70s custom covers

Wow those are really good! I have no comparison to the originals, but all of these look absolutely genuine. Did a mod merge some of your threads or did you really post so many covers at once?

Here's what I would change:

Tone down the colours a bit. I think they're a tad too bright, too loud, especially the background.
And I would get rid of the "Original Soundtrack etc...", slightly move down the logo and add the neat looking round sticker from the official cover somewhere in the upper left (and maybe rotate it a little).

But overall that's a very well done custom cover!

Thanks for the comments and feedback. If you think that cover is too "in-your-face" you should check out the "technicolour" one in the alternates pile! I like the idea of utilizing the bubble in the corner, but then where would I credit the composers? And how would you suggest I tone down the colours?

Every here's already praised it, but allow me to add my own, this is incredible! Especially the font choice and logo, which is especially beautiful. I probably wouldn't have put the "A Film By David Lean" bit in but that's more of a personal preference. Awesome job!

Spur of the moment kind of thing. Top and bottom alignment isn't everything. Need to figure out an easy way on how to make everything come out exactly the same size if the original sources aren't the same size.

Imho not every front cover needs to mention the composer. At least not at cost of aesthetics ;)

Just wind down colour intensity, that should do it. Although I've just checked out the full size image and your chosen background is painfully blurry. Something should be done about that as well, for example search for a better version with Google images or vectorize the whole background with CorelDRAW.

in as much as i would like to take all the credits to this inspiring words, i shouldn't. the first cover came from a teaser poster release earlier i think that i found on o' googly goo.

and the 2nd cover is from an official dvd/br cover. i do however made a few twitching and minor editing to match the colors, the positioning of text, logos and on the image itself to fit times "square". just being noticed and reading from someone like you my friend is a huge thing to me. so with that, i'll take the compliment. thanks mate ;)

What do you mean, the original sources aren't the same size?

I mean that one of the picture was 1000x1000 (when cropped from a poster) and the other one only came out at 780x780 (both cropped from wallpapers or something).
I exported all of them at the same size (780) because I wanted it to be consistent but it's harder for me as a newbie to get the titles and logo to be the exact same size on a PS comp that is 1000p and a PS comp that is only 780p :)
It's probably an easy workaround if I export the 1000p picture to 780p size first, then reimport it into PS and work on that, but there has to be an easier solution that I'm overlooking!
Simply by scrolling down the page in Firefox and aligning them below my bookmarks I can already tell that all three logos are at the same height, which is good, but the titles on ANH are slightly off compared to ESB and ROTJ.
