Requesting a cover for John Wick: Chapter 2
I'd like "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" up top, replacing "Keanu Reeves" and "Music by Tyler Bates & Joel J. Richard underneath the logo. Keep the tagline above the logo, though. Thanks :)
It's high-rez, bitch! :p
I'll take a stab at it! Give me until the weekend though, I'm up to my neck with work right now :)

I know you didn't make the cover, but do you happen to have similar ones for the other films? :)
Unfortunately, I do not. That's why I asked on here. I really wanted to make a matching cover set for the Ice Age franchise but I can't find any good material for the films. All I could pull off was one for The Meltdown:

Fun fact: the second custom cover I ever made (after Pirate's Passage, and that wasn't just a cropped image) was for the hit anime and manga series Dragon Ball Z, a little over a year ago. It was terrible. I then made a second attempt at it. This too was terrible.
http://i63.tinypic.com/2l8k9i0.jpghttp://i64.tinypic.com/9vh2bm.jpg
Even way back when my eye knew that something was off about these covers, but it has taken me a whole year and a half-dozen series of covers to both understand and articulate it. So came one of the first of many lessons regarding the cover-making business; the vital importance of the font. Its shape, size, type, accents and placements are what I've now come to consider the most important aspect of most covers. The professionalism imparted by proper font use cannot be understated, and for the aspiring artist that may be lurking this thread, this is a lesson that I implore be learnt early. Lest you end up with the covers above.
With this lesson in mind, let's see if we can make something more of this series, shall we? Something more befitting of this colossal culture icon. Going back to the drawing board, I first looked inward to answer what kind of cover I wanted to make. After all, why make a custom cover if existing covers already adequately convey what you're trying to express? I did a quick search of the many DB, DBZ & DBGT official soundtrack and singles releases over the years and two major things stood out to me: the focus on characters and the very Japanese/animesque design philosophy behind these covers. The first was quite simple to understand; one of DBZ's strength lies in its now immortalised canon of characters, and it made sense to me that they would be the focus on most of the cover art. The second is somewhat harder to elucidate into words, but I encourage you to look at a small collection of album art for anime soundtracks and you should notice a distinct stylistic difference between them and their western counterparts. And while many of those covers served them well, I wanted to see what I could accomplish moving the focus away from the characters and giving the covers a less specifically Eastern flavour, while at the same time modernising the 80's/90s aesthetic of a lot of these covers.
Over ten full days (I was on school holidays) I went through a couple of ideas (some of which I'll show here), and then when I settled on a design, I did what I now do with most of my covers and sit on them, coming back after a day, two days, three, a week, and seeing if I still like them. The covers went through numerous iterations (up to half a dozen major updates and innumerable minor alterations) before arriving at the covers you will see below. I've been sitting on them for a year, since I know anime soundtracks aren't exactly the most popular type of score on this forum. But Dave999's post (
Thread 90457) spurred me to write something up and post what I have. TEEWS666's (
http://teews666.deviantart.com/) covers are, in my honest opinion, a more successful rendition of the embodiment of what I also set out to do. I guess the only leg-up my covers have is if you want to use them for your own compilation of these scores instead of all the dozen or so released volumes (I myself have a single playlist totaling 8 hours just for Faulconer Productions work).
Without further ado, I present my covers for the English version of Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, and the Ultimate Uncut edition of Dragon Ball Z's first two seasons.
(CLICK ON IMAGES FOR FULL RESOLUTION)
Set 1: Dragon Ball Z
Although the making of all three of these sets (from starting up GIMP to finish) took around ten days, the actual brainstorming process, studying cover art of both the soundtracks and DVDs/Blu-Rays and finding suitable images in a good resolution also took the better part of a week. So the true amount of time spent on these sets of covers was more than a fortnight. As mentioned in the paragraphs above, I wanted the focus of these covers to be less on the colourful cast of characters and more on the core symbols, images and ideas of the series. This is somewhat tricky as the series has been running upwards of twenty years now, and has gone through different rosters of characters, ideas, themes, storylines and even tones and genres. So to boil such a sprawling franchise down into a single image is a difficult prospect indeed! I did know I was going to be making multiple sets though, so I could do a few different ideas instead of just one. For the main series, Dragon Ball Z, I was initially thinking of sticking Goku on there as he has been the central, unwavering focus throughout the series. Until I found this frankly badass image of Shenron which also made me kick myself for not thinking of the other obvious idea; the Dragon himself! After all, the series is friggin' called Dragon Ball Z. So that's the image I used.
As you might be able to tell, there was a lot of experimenting going on with these covers creations. I originally left them with simple coloured backgrounds, before trying out different textures and settling with this cardboard-esque design.
In a first for me, I opted not to put composer information on the cover to give it a more vinyl-like feel, as well as let people use these covers for multiple DBZ albums, not just those by Faulconer Productions.

Set 2: Dragon Ball Z: The Ultimate Uncut Edition
While I was still sitting on most of the above covers, I set to work on this series, and the focus of this set is what was initially going to be the focus of the previous set; Goku. All of the Goku covers here were made first, and while I like them okay-ish now, I was somewhat miffed at the incongruity between the Goku and Dragon sets of covers. I brainstormed other ideas for a less character-focused and more symbol-oriented approach. The revelation behind the Symbol covers also required me to kick myself: how obvious that I didn't think to put the symbols on the back of the classic orange Gi on the covers. Originally the symbols were in the middle but to add a little bit of style and differentiate myself from TEEWS666's fantastic covers, I tilted them and made them less obscured by the text.

Set 3: Dragon Ball GT
With this last set, I knew that I didn't want to do another character set, since no other character in Dragon Ball can compete with Goku in the recognizability department. Nonetheless, I had been sitting on this simple, stylish picture of Goku's statue from the very last episode, and it resonated with me so much (it takes 100 years in-story but finally Goku is immortalized in his world and recognized for his great deeds as much as in our world) that I couldn't resist. I still wanted to do a Symbol set though so I thought of what else I could do. Kick number three (my shins are hurting now): The Dragon Balls themselves! The star in these images is actually a stock star from a random website that I tried to match as closely to the stars in the Dragon Balls as I could. In a nice little easter egg, the colours of the Star covers are not just to look nice. Anyone who has seen GT will know these two particular colours (orange and blue) are very deliberate (and something of a minor spoiler, which I usually try to avoid but I couldn't resist here).

#1 is my attempt at a mix between the official (

) Varse Sarabande CD from 1986 and with an added touch of the famous Deluxe Edition banner for the 2001 (
https://www.varesesarabande.com/products/aliens-deluxe-edition) release.
This one also has two alternates; Amber (

) & Red (

).
#2 is the counterpart to this (

).
...was an attempt to make the film more modern, Im referring to the text at the bottom and the brilliant artwork (

),
which highlights the teal-and-orange (
https://priceonomics.com/why-every-movie-looks-sort-of-orange-and-blue/) look used in many film posters these days, by Brian Taylor (
https://twitter.com/CandykillerNews).
Unfortunately, the poster design seemed to cramp in a square for my taste, fortunately it proved quite easy to expand the image with some gradient colour and a bit of smoke ;)

(
http://imgur.com/OOyOM6H)

(
http://imgur.com/ruNvyVN)
#3 was my attempt to recreate the original (
https://img.discogs.com/MOnIS4ksr5mbclY_6afNpmIlb70=/fit-in/500x500/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():qualit y(90)/discogs-images/R-998637-1182545076.jpeg.jpg) cover of the LP released by That's Entertainment Records as closely as possible.
#4 was inspired by two Return of the Jedi LPs; the US (
https://img.discogs.com/jc1qapP9HDXLAaywMBWy2QFJK04=/fit-in/600x600/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():qualit y(90)/discogs-images/R-3230062-1321461235.jpeg.jpg) & the poster design of the Argentine (

<A HREF="

#5 is the sequel to this (

), which also uses a backdrop similar to the 1995 widescreen edition LaserDisc (

).
#6 fits with this (

). And even though the original artwork is quite nice, it doesn't have the same effect as the dangling chains of the first one.

(
http://imgur.com/DiEjuTL)

(
http://imgur.com/BVBzpGL)
#7 is based on the 1993 Limited Edition Alien Trilogy Facehugger Box Set (
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VpLPuAZnKbI/Tir-gPuYT3I/AAAAAAAAAAY/Zc1vh_4jYdg/s1600/PICT0006.JPG) on VHS.
As I teased earlier (
Thread 90457), this will be one of the covers that will be in a matching set for the entire main series, you have to guess which ones the others are ;)
I am really enjoying trying to recreate vinyl covers, as I was with #8.

(
http://imgur.com/eXYdxOr)

(
http://imgur.com/PLM7VFk)
#9 was also a fun attempt to recreate a version inspired by an LP (

) for Blade Runner released by WEA Records.
In #10 I wanted the logo and text to be covered by the saliva of the Alien, to give it a sort of 3D effect to the image ;)

(
http://imgur.com/5fYKOKK)

(
http://imgur.com/tLgCIie)
Again, to match the one I did for Alien, #11 uses the very similar designed artwork from the 30th Anniversary Blu-ray (
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Aliens-Blu-ray/158922/).
However, thanks to the advice of Mr. Sonic (
http://forums.ffshrine.org/member.php?u=488241), it has been retouched to, in my opinion, look far more elegant and beautiful than my original (

) version (

)(s) :-D
#12 was another fun vinyl inspired attempt.

(
http://imgur.com/1qdRRg9)

(
http://imgur.com/VJt8iga)
#13 uses the cover of this (
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/original-aliens-comic-book-sequel-840632).
For the final cover in this series, I wanted to do something simple, something to match the original advertisement campaign of the film.
Space, logo, and a catchy tagline. That's all we need ;)
If you have any special requests for any of them (e.g. if you want me to add or move anything or change the color of something or whatever your heart desires), please let me know.
Hope you like 'em ;)

SUPERMASSIVE DBZ POST!
You know, when I began reading this post, I didn't expect that kind of stylistic and more importantly minimalistic covers to follow a little further down the text. I know shit about DBZ, but I always imagined it as this flashy colourful manga comic series, with lots of action for low attention span youngsters. Those covers on the other hand evoke a sense of grandness and significance. And considering the size of this huge collection of covers, I assume this series deserves your given attention. You made me second-guess my earlier opinion about the show and that's saying something.
Also, isn't it paradox that the best thing about making covers, or art in general, is the creative process itself? All those countless variations no-one's ever gonna see. Or the very moment when an already pretty good artwork turns into something really special? Those little moments during the development process that cannot be shared but only experienced. Sometimes I think we're really only doing this for ourselves and showing off the result is only the tip of the iceberg.

This is all Spark's fault: I'm listening to the 30 track version now…terrible. Way too long. Dirty edits. And Gerrard is way over-represented.

The most popular one is the 86-track bootleg. It was posted in MP3 a few years ago. It doesn't sound great, but it's the most legit one to surface yet. Several cues have been combined to represent their film versions I THINK. Its 86 tracks because it includes all the alternates and bonus tracks and shit, the actual film score (from 1m01 all the way up to 8m47) is 38 tracks and runs 2:05:12. 2 source cues are included.

Ho boy.
We truly are blessed that two titans of our little community here (heidl and now tintacle) have contributed a treasure trove of terrific technique. And by blessed I mean cursed. How the heck am I supposed to choose from all of these covers? It'd be easy if they sucked shit, but unfortunately they're amazing. Didn't think that one out, did ya? Just for that, here's an unnecessary review of your works of art.
#1 makes me wonder why it's taken so long for someone to slap the "Deluxe Edition" banner on one of these (even though heidl did it first...)
#2 might be my favourite, I like how different it is from the other covers from not only this set but others peoples too, and just like the Alien counterpart, I really like the subtle red from the art reflected on the font colour.
#3 is real nice, I'd be interested to see how it would look if you gave it the worn look of an old vinyl cover
#4 makes better use of the vertical dimensions of the poster than the official cover ever did (I know what you're thinking "wow tintacle made a better cover than the official one what a fucking surprise")
#5 either I'm not eating enough carrots or the pictures too dark because I can't see shit
#6 sucks (just kidding)
#7 is basically an alternate of #3, which I like
#8 I'm usually not a fan of blurry screenshots as art for covers but you've managed to make it work (my guess is the extreme contrast is working wonders here), and while it's nice that it follows a different colour than the other covers, it's always a struggle to play around with colours for covers to movies with such strong and recognizable colour palettes (which all four original Alien films have); to me, I'll always associate red with Alien.
#9 I get the feeling you really like this poster, also I really like the Queen in the background
#10 at this point I want to kill myself because I'll never be this good
#11 I like this improved edition more, Sonic has a good taste in cover art but unfortunately he sucks and I'm only saying that because he hasn't made the 500 Deluxe Editions requested to him every day how dare he have a life outside of the internet
#12 stop making covers you're making us all look bad
#13 oh nice artwork, also I feel like this one would benefit from the Sarabande logo and other stuff in the corners
#14 amazing how the starfield background is so hopeful and majestic on the Star Wars covers yet so creepy here
Considering Alien is the greatest score ever made, your series cannot come soon enough.
Very cool! Thanks :)
You're very welcome! Thanks for giving me an opportunity to post it. For the more obscure custom covers I like to wait for an opportunity to post them.
Could somebody please take these and make them for the score to DragonBall Evolutions?
Is there a particular image you had in mind, or did you want me to use one (or more) from the sets I posted?
You know, when I began reading this post, I didn't expect that kind of stylistic and more importantly minimalistic covers to follow a little further down the text. I know shit about DBZ, but I always imagined it as this flashy colourful manga comic series, with lots of action for low attention span youngsters. Those covers on the other hand evoke a sense of grandness and significance.
Oh no, Dragon Ball Z isn't a flashy colourful manga comic series, with lots of action for low attention span youngsters. It's the flashy colourful manga comic series, with lots of action for low attention span youngsters. It's the cultural icon of Japan, to the point that Goku will be the mascot of the next Olympics. DBZ, along with Pokemon, delivered a one-two punch from East to West, bringing anime to the forefront of an entire generation of children, and with it a at-that-point unforeseen level of cultural appreciation (and appropriation). It's influence is felt in every large, long running shonen series since, and elements will be lifted from its story by aspiring manga artists for generations (yes, generations) to come. And it helps that the presentation and style of it's fight scenes are so unique to a manga setting that it is both accessible while being unique and extremely difficult to translate to other mediums, although as CGI techniques improve I'd love to see Hollywood try their hand at this fighting style (the only two examples from mainstream Hollywood that come even close are the final Neo vs. Smith battle in Matrix Revolutions and Man of Steel, which is probably the best DBZ movie to date, which is saying a lot because it sucked donkeys balls oh god don't get me started on Zack Snyder).
Oh dear, you've got me started on Dragon Ball, let's stop it here before I write 10,000 words on how it affected my childhood.
Also thanks for the compliment.
And considering the size of this huge collection of covers, I assume this series deserves your given attention. You made me second-guess my earlier opinion about the show and that's saying something.
I wouldn't recommend it, especially to a non-anime baka gaijin like yourself. I only like it because the nostalgia googles are on so tight they're cutting off oxygen to my brain.
Ah man, you're making me look back at every set I've ever made and thinking about each and every one of those moments. I can't remember every single moment, but I'll take away a little something of each of those moments from every set. "Cannot be shared but only experienced" is a beautiful way to put it. As for your paradox...
This quote doesn't just apply to the effects our actions have on ourselves and the struggle of the human condition, but also the effect the art has on the artist. Recognition and fame can be great, but why be an artist if you don't love art and the artistic process?
Of course, if the like button ever makes a return to this forum please disregard everything I said and give me sweet imaginary internet points. Please?
They gotta end up somewhereso why not this dump? ;)
This is the best quote from the last 200 pages of this thread.

Didn't like cropped mothership in ver. 1, and since I couldn't find an image that wasn't either cropped over over-layed with text I had to create a composite. Other issues I let slide the first go around, such as the bright background of the characters, have been amended here.

Thanks. Unfortunately, Prof X was like that in the original poster. I struggled with the font though, I want to redo the text sometime. If anyone can help me with the font in the original poster...
I'd appreciate it. Identifont didn't really help me.
Whatthefont says closest match is Wearetrippin Short Bold, but I can't find a link for it.

What do you think? :)
I was mostly inspired by Shanti Sparrow's work (

I used Santiago Moreno's Vim SM (
https://www.behance.net/gallery/8028439/Vim-SM-Free-Typeface) for the title and Artimasa's Harlott (
https://www.behance.net/gallery/23901615/Harlott-(Free-Font)) for the rest of the text.

Errrwhy not
So if one consults the original Bob Peak poster for Apocalypse Now one will note that the weight of Brando's offset face and the film title in the lower left are counter balanced by Sheen's face in the upper right. There is no counter balance to Kong and the film title in the IMAX poster; the right side is dead space. I've attempted to remedy that here:

Did you use the film's font for this? I'm somewhat a typography geek when it comes to brushes...
And secondly, if there is a font title for this, which I'm assuming there isn't, what is it?
(I'm talking about the first one).

Cover 1: movie title is re-puprosed graphic (I would assume no custom font was created either); credit text is FilmoTypeGlenlake.
Covers 2 & 3: movie title is re-purposed graphic (and from what I've read, Forza Black is the base font used); credit text is Eurostile, similar to Forza Medium, but I prefer the former's character width.

Ah, thanks! Looks like they don't have the logo in high-resolution though, so I'll still be cutting one out. (I only work in 1500x1500, and sometimes very very large 3000x3000.)
I just had the deluxe edition wording there to balance the design, it's a placeholder as I couldn't decide how to divvy up the text and the composition looked flawed without text at the top.

Removing the text from this is somewhat therapeutic. Using US and Russian banner variants to rid of most text, with what remains getting painted away.

All I keep thinking of when I see these amazing covers made for films not yet out is when people were making these cool covers for Pan with Dario Marianelli, then having to scramble when John Powell replaced him at the last minute. Makes me chuckle internally.
On a more somber note, a bold prediction: One of these days people will have to go back and replace the composer credits for the covers of the next Star Wars film with tears in their eyes. Just saiyan, it might not be a good idea to make these covers so far in advance when your composer is 85 years old. It might not happen with The Last Jedi, but it will happen.
Btw, these covers are cool.

I'm not saying that Lucasfilm should stop SW movies as soon as Williams won't be able to make 'em... I'm just saying that I wish that Lucasfilm will keep making SW movies in "trilogies" (instead of neverending episodes with the same characters), and that Williams will be able to score at least Ep IX, finishing the 'musical' journey of the trilogy & characters started with TFA. Then Lucasfilm can start a new trilogy, with new characters and a new composer. And Williams will have scored three trilogies, a final testament of his masterful skills... That's what I hope for him and the films.

And now I need a little help from Heidl, Gururu and the others. Two days ago, I grabbed the score 'Along Came A Spider' by Goldsmith. The only cover scan I could find in decent quality was pretty small (700x700). But I was too lazy to grab the scanner from the basement so I decided to do it myself. I'm down to two options:
The first comes close the original design. Which I never liked. And subsequently tried to improve on. So, number 2 doesn't work, does it? What can I do to make 1 a bit better looking and 2 perhaps work?
P.S.: the font I used is Haettenschweiler as I couldn't find the original font they used for the promotional posters. I don't like to use it but I couldn't think of anything else (I tried one of the Alien-fonts - looked neat but too fragile).
EDIT: I just noticed that the placement of "Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" is wrong as it doesn't align to anything. Sorry. On the first picture they all align to Morgan Freeman's right eye (our left).

Imho the font size is a bit too small. Imagine it as a 12x12cm CD size. Or wait... here, have a look at this:

(

)
What I would do: center the text on top and bottom, make it bigger and probably change it to a less chunky typeface.
Switch the logo for a custom logo and change it in size and placement so that the "spider" is on top of the red whateveritis in the middle of the web. Maybe a psychotic handwritten font?
Or keep the original logo, but take it apart and re-assemble it using different baselines or even two full lines. Whatever you decide to do, I think the word spider has to sit in the middle of that web thing.
...
Now that I think of it... the most badass custom font to use would be one that'd make the word "spider" look like an actual absurdly deformed spider. Imagine that!
*********
I forgot to say it, your version looks much better than the official cover!

As to the font used in the poster, the only one that I think comes closest is NoExit (
http://muccatypo.com/no-exit.html). Unfortunately, there's no readily available free version. Myself, I used Compacta ICG Light.

It's a problematic composition to work with. Perhaps if I were under the influence I'd go the lengths of getting rid of the faces.

Heidl, Gururu and Dave: thank you very, very much for your suggestions. And the examples. And the finalized covers. Wow!
@Heidl: did you say to me what I always say to you? "Make the font bigger so it can be read in case it's printed out"? I don't believe it :D I tried to splice the movies' title apart, it didn't work. Or better said: I couldn't make it work. But I changed the font into something you should recognize ;) I also centered the cover... which didn't work out, I have to change it again and realign the fonts (EDIT: done).
@gururu: I copied your design and only changed some small things here and there. Guys, if you want to know how good he is, look at the font alignment of "original motion picture score" on his version. I copied it because it looked very neat the way the letters aligned.
And how can I make those previews smaller? I always forget that, I can't seem to remember it! EDIT: found it, thanks :)
Man...
I was working on a cover and had to use the restroom and was like "I have a Surface, I don't need to stop!" And I dropped my Surface Pen in the toilet.
No covers for a little while, photoshopping with a mouse is such hot garbage after using a pen. And I was just getting back into the custom cover groove... :-/
Thoughts?

That sucks, I'm sorry to hear. I've yet to drop my phone in the toilet. I'm usually pretty good with it.

It was pretty hilarious, turned pen around in hand to erase then when turning it back it slipped between my fingers and rolled down the Surface screen, then hit the toilet seat and did a flip into the water.
But anyway I'll have a new pen in a few days, then more covers!

It's not necessarily overrated, it's Microsoft's ploy to get OEMs to stop making garbage PCs and it worked. If Wacom offered something as stunning and versatile as the Surface Pro, I'd bite. I prefer the Wacom pen tech but they aren't fitting it down into anything as svelte as the Surface Pro for a few years at least. Wacom does have newer pen tech (Wacom AES I believe) that works on thin & light designs, but it's very similar to the Surface Pen tech (N-trig) and not much better than it.

This may or not be news to you, but the "Additional Music by Marco Beltrami" consists solely of tracked music from Scream and Mimic.

Yes, I'm perfectly aware. I remember reading this in print (remember when FSM magazine was around?).. But even still, I'd appreciate a subcaption, if you don't mind.

Why would you need Wacom to cross the bridge to tablets when you've got something as cool as the Cintiq HD (

I wanted to differentiate from my previous effort, so this is what ya gonna get: back to the original poster with the off-center composition, though I've attempted a distraction by enlarging the Shape's face.

Here is another option for Logan. I hope you guys like it/find a use for it! I have been enjoying this score quite a bit.

http://www.wacom.com/en-es/products/pen-displays/cintiq-27-qhd-touch)?
That's not an all-in-one portable solution. Wacom's MobileStudio Pro (
http://www.wacom.com/en-es/products/pen-displays/wacom-mobilestudio-pro-13) is a more apt comparison for what I want, but it's $1k+ more expensive than the Surface, not nearly as versatile, and not as portable. I'd love a Cintiq but am instead eying a standard drawing tablet for my desktop, as I have a fairly large "monitor" (
https://www.costco.com/.product.100289273.html) and don't have room for a tilting 27" display.
But anyway, I'll receive a new Surface Pen hopefully tomorrow and will have some new covers up in a few days! Who knew a certain movie actually had decent yet horribly underused artwork? (

Since heidl wasnt to be persuaded, i had to make my own cover(s) for Passengers. Because lets be honest, the official cover (

) sucks balls. However, this ended up being a rather difficult one to tackle, since 1) there are almost zero usable pictures, photos, or still shot of this film to be found, and 2) how do you place a black starship in front of a black starfield? Sure, it looks great in motion, but as a singular image? Not so much. I still ended up with what i had in mind yes, i
did place a dark ship in front of a dark background (see covers 1 and 3) because this
does convey the feeling of being lost in space pretty well. Im just not too happy with the results, but here they are regardless:

Key art state side is just plain awful, so had to use Finnish poster and just wing it (though I do have reservations about aping the use of Trajan Pro). Also: listened to the score for the first time as well, and it's actually pretty good and with a vary obvious Goldsmith influence.
